In the meantime, until release next Thursday, some members of the WRD community who have helped us test and balance the DLC will now start streaming videos of the new Italian nations, for your perspective.

Hello!
You might be wishing, you might be waiting, but Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: Italy is really getting awfully close to release. We only need to put the final flourish and finishing touches on our newest Nation Pack DLC.
We have a couple of other, smaller news to share, including the opportunity to feature your chosen name in our new Nation Pack. Keep reading to find out more!
Enlist in the Italian Army
We are very close to the finish line. When we are ready, well announce a release date ASAP. Note that with the Nation Packs launch, well also reboot the Ranked leaderboards in Wargame: Red Dragon.
In the meantime, we offer you to Enlist in the Italian Army. You might know the drill, but this is where you can submit your chosen name as a squad leaders name in-game.
There are a couple of rules:
- Only one name per player.
- Names appropriate to the Nation Pack featured.
- Surnames only.
- No insults or wordplay. All names will be checked.
- Names will be picked randomly for an in-game unit. We cant assign a name to a specific category. So, even if you want to be a hotshot fighter pilot, your name might be featured as a supply truck instead. The fortunes of war!

Hello, hello!
We are back with the final installment of our Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: Italy previews. In todays DevBlog, we take to the skies with a look at the DLCs new helicopters and aircraft.
Lets go!
Flying High With Nation Pack: Italy
In terms of helicopters, Italy initially relied only on American-made helos. These were mostly civilian variants of military helicopters such as the Kiowa, Huey, and Chinook, with some of them modified by local Italian industries. From the 1980s onwards, a wind of change blew as Italians started developing and deploying their own designs. These proved effective, such as the multi-purpose A.109 and the A.129 attack helicopter.
When it comes to aircraft, the Italian Air Force can be divided into three categories: the F-104, which was used, reused, heavily upgraded, and kept on for almost half of the Cold Wars duration; the jointly developed Italian-British-German Tornado; and older, lighter domestic designs, such as the G.91, MB-399, and A-11 Ghibli. The odd one out - not falling under the above labels - is the AV-8B.
The Helicopter Force
As before, all bolded units are new or remade models.
In the LOG tab, youll find.
- AB.205 CMDO: the Bell 205, which is a civilian version of the UH-1 Huey. This helicopter is license-produced by Augusta-Bell in Italy. Unarmed CV.
- CH-47C CARICO: the classic supply Chinook.
- AB.205: identical to the CV variant, but with side-mounted MG 42/59.
- AB.412: civilian version of the four-bladed UH-1 Twin Huey. Unarmed and available from 1983.
- AB.412 GRIFONE: same as the previous unit, but with side-mounted MG 42/59. Available from 1987.
- C-47C: a Chinook in a classic transport format.
As recon units.
- AB.206: unarmed civilian version of the Kiowa.
- AB.212 ELIGUFO: civilian version of the twin-bladed UH-1 Twin Huey. This specific Marina variant was fitted with electronic equipment for naval surveillance. In-game, it will act as an unarmed radar recon helicopter. Available from 1983.
- A.109EOA-1: unarmed recon helicopter, faster and more resilient than the AB.206. Available from 1988.
- A.109EOA-2: same as the previous one, but armed with two 12,7mm machine gun pods and two 7-tube 70mm rocket pods. Also available from 1988.
And lastly, dedicated attack or gunship helicopters.
- AB.205 MAMEE: a Huey fitted with twin 7,62mm Gatlings and two 7-tube 70mm rocket pods.
- A.109AT: a purely anti-tank A.109 variant armed with four I-TOW tubes. Available from 1982.

- F-104S-ASA-1: a further electronics-focused upgrade of the F-104S. This variant can fire the domestic-made Aspide-1A [SA] long-range air-to-air missile. Available from 1986.
- F-104S-ASA-2: the final upgrade further improves the planes air detection, plus allowing it to fire indigenous Idra [F&F] long-range air-to-air missiles. Available from 1990.
Next up, the Tornado.
- TORNADO A-200: multi-role, with 2x AIM-9L and 5xMk.20 Rockeye II cluster bombs. Available from 1982.

What happens next?
Thats all for todays aircraft preview of Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: Italy. We hope to share the release date of this new expansion very soon! If you want to be kept appraised of all the latest Eugen has to offer, be sure to check out our Eugen forums, or (Facebook page and Twitter). Ciao!
We are back!
As promised, in todays DevBlog, well shine a light on the new arsenal of vehicles youll get to play with in the upcoming Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: Italy.
Lets go!
Play it cool with Nation Pack: Italy
Italys roster of vehicles and equipment is quite peculiar. For most of the Cold War, the Italian Army had to make do with foreign materiel, especially its main battle tanks. However, it had a strong automotive and manufacturing base, with the domestic military industry designing some striking armored vehicles destined for an export market.
This means that Italy had a large number of potential prototypes, most of which were actually way beyond the experimental stage, finding export success in other countries. So many of these types of vehicles exist that we could have made a Wargame: Red Dragon Italian Army with only export prototypes. A fine line had to be walked between featuring a realistic Italian Armed Forces and balancing the prototype/export deemed fun or necessary.
A technical note before we dive in: most of the models done (or remade) for this Nation Pack benefited from the latest advancements in Eugens modeling process - the same one we are using now for WARNO. This is very much in the same vein as the SADF leveraged Steel Division 2 improvements. The Italian Nation Pack models will be some of the most advanced and visually striking in Wargame: Red Dragon!
Main types of Italian vehicles
What kind of vehicles will you be able to encounter in Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: Italy? Bolded units are new!
LOG
- Command vehicles will include the following:
- AR76 CMDO: the iconic Campagnola jeep of the Italian Army. Here, unarmed as a CV, it will be made available in several other variants in other categories.
- FIAT 6614 CMDO: an armored car armed with a .50 cal.
- M577A2 CMDO: the classic tracked APC.
- LVTC-7: a heavy amphibious command vehicle armed with a .50 cal.
- LEOPARD 1A2 CMDO: a command variant of Italys main battle tank.
- Supply vehicles include the following:
- ACM-80 CARICO: a light supply truck.
- FIAT 6602 CARICO: a medium supply truck.
SUPP
- Italy toyed a lot with fielding MLRS, testing rocket launchers on many different types of vehicles.
- FIROS-25 is a 40-tube 122mm napalm MLRS mounted on a truck. Not adopted by the Italian Army in this variant, it is classified as a 1981 prototype.
- FIROS-30 sports the same launcher but uses HE and Smoke rounds and is mounted on a bigger, faster, and sturdier truck. Available from 1987.
- M270 MLRS: bigger is better, with the classic 227mm MRLS rocket launcher in HE configuration. Available from 1990.
- More FIROS variants, mostly lighter ones, will be found in the VEH category as direct fire support units.
Tube artillery includes:
- SEMOVENTE 155/23 M109G: the classic short-tube M109G.
- SEMOVENTE 155/39 M109L: the longer M109, but with an indigenous OTO Melara gun. Available from 1986.
- SEMOVENTE 175/60 M107: the classic M107 175mm.
- SEMOVENTE 203/39 M110A2: the classic M110A2 203mm. Available from 1985.
- PORTO-MORTAIO M125: the classic M125 81mm mortar.
- PORTO-MORTAIO M106: the classic M106 107mm mortar.
- PORTO-MORTAIO M106A2: an improved variant of the latter unit, with the M30 107mm mortar replaced by the much better (French!) MO-120-RT 120mm. Available from 1986.
- M727 I-HAWK: the ubiquitous unit.
- M727 I-HAWK PIP II: the same system as fielded by South Korea and the Netherlands. Available from 1985.
- SPADA ASPIDE: Like the Hawk in real life, this one isnt supposed to be self-propelled. However, for gameplay purposes, we put it on the back of an Italian truck as a prototype, although it has been available since 1983. This system follows the same logic as the Norwegians with their AMRAAM: the Italians modified a domestic long-range air-to-air missile - the SPADA - to be ground-launched. In game terms, the SPADA ASPIDE is a slightly less accurate NASAMS.
Air defense systems using guns include the following SPAAGs:
- QUADRINATA ACM-52: the poor mans SPAAG, this is a truck mounting a quad .50 cal.
- SIDAM 25: quite a bit more powerful, featuring a quad 25mm on a M113. Available from 1989.
- And of course, the (infamous) unit everyone expects (or fears): the OF-40 OTOMATIC. It is everybodys favorite meme gun mounted on a sturdier OF-40 MBT chassis compared to the Danish Leopard 1. Available from 1989 as a prototype.
The list goes on
Due to Italy's use of several different armor models, we have divided its tank tab into three distinct families. The Americans:
- M47: still used by the Italian Carabinieri (military police) in our timeframe.
- M60A1: similar to the one used by the USMC.
- M60A1 ERA: also similar to the USMC version, but with better ammo (+1), being only available from 1990.
The Exports: The OF-40 was only used by the United Arab Emirates in real life. This means that all members of this family are prototyped.
- OF-40: a Leoparod as figuratively described by some. In their quest for a new domestic design, the OTO Melara and Fiat engineers basically reinvented a tank that could be seen as sitting between a Leopard 1A2 and 1A3, although lacking stabilizers. Available from 1980.
- OF-40 Mk.2: continuing their joint venture, the designers greatly improved the tank guns range and accuracy, as well as adding stabilizers. The armor package remained unchanged. Available from 1982.
- OF-40 Mk.2A: with slightly improved accuracy. The stabilizer features a noticeable improvement. Armor remains unchanged, but optics are updated. Available from 1993.
- OF-40 Mk.3: the ultimate variant replaces the 105mm gun with a more powerful and accurate 120mm version. It also features improved armor all-around and adds an extra MG. Also available from 1993.
The Domestics:
- LEOPARD 1A2: All right, it might be the bastard child in this particular family, not being entirely Italian. We would like to note that it was produced in great numbers in Italy under license, turning it into the most numbered tank used in the Italian Army. It is similar to the in-game German counterpart.
- C1 ARIETE: the one and only. We all expect this modern main battle tank here. It is included as a 1995 prototype, Italys own heavy main battle tank. It uses the same tank gun as the OF-40 Mk.3, although with better ammo.
- AR76 CARABINERI: an unarmed recon jeep.
- AR76 RICO.: the same jeep, but sporting a .50 cal.
- FIAT 6616 20mm: similar to the South Korean counterpart.
- FIAT 6616 90mm: the same chassis as the previous unit, but armed with a low-pressure 90mm Cockerill Mk.3 gun. This vehicle is roughly a better AML-90, being a tad bit faster, better armored, and armed. Available from 1990.
- FIAT 6616 60mm: same chassis, but armed with the HVMS 60mm high-velocity gun (AP rounds only). This armament is already found on the Israeli vehicle of the same name. Available from 1989, but as a prototype.
- LEOPARD 1A2 RICO.: similar to the main battle tank, but in the recon role.
- B1 CENTAURO RICO.: Italys striking indigenous heavy armored car. It is a better AMX-10 RC, faster, with more range and accuracy, a stabilizer, better optics, and slightly more armor. Available from 1990.
Some more vehicles
And we turn to a general type of vehicle. Fire support vehicles:
- AR59 CANNONIERA: the AR76s ancestor, mounting an M40A1 RCL as a fire support vehicle.
- FIROS-6 (AR76): the classic AR76 armed with a 48-tube 51mm MLRS. Can only fire in direct support. This version was designed for paratroopers, providing them with additional firepower. It was never adopted for service. Available all-era, but prototyped.
- FIROS-6 (FIAT 6614): the same launcher, also adapted on a Fiat 6614 armored car for export. Available all-era, but prototyped.
- AR76 C.C. I-TOW: the classic AR76 with an I-TOW launcher. Available from 1982.
- VTC TOW: this is the M150, an M113 armed with a single TOW tube.
- VTC I-TOW: the same, but armed with I-TOW missiles. Available from 1982.
- VCC-1 TUA: A VCC-1 APC (see below) with a TUA turret that can fire two TOW-2 missiles in quick succession. Available as a prototype in 1990.
- C-13/60: identical to the Israeli HVMS (an Italian export product) but in the tank destroyer role - not recon - and on a slightly different chassis.
- B1 CENTAURO: the same as the recon variant, but with lesser optics.
- ACM-80: a soft-skin truck transport.
- FIAT 6614: light wheeled APC, similar to the South Korean KM900.
- LVTP-7: heavy amphibious vehicle.
- M113A1: the classic APC.
- VCC-1 CAMILLINO: indigenous M113-like APC, with more armor, yet retaining its amphibious ability. Available from 1982.
- VCC-1 CAMILLINO Mk.3: uparmored VCC-1, but having lost its amphibious capacity. Available from 1995 and prototyped.
- VM 90P PROTETTO: an armored truck. It will count as a recon and transport for some scout squads. Available from 1990.

Thats all for todays vehicle preview of Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: Italy. Well be back next week with the DLCs aircraft! If you want to be kept appraised of all the latest Eugen has to offer, be sure to check out our Eugen forums, or (Facebook page and Twitter). Ciao!Surprise, surprise, surprise!
We are back with a new Nation Pack for our ever-popular Wargame: Red Dragon, introducing the armed forces of Italy!
Thats right, an often-requested new nation is being worked on in Eugens workshop as we speak. The upcoming Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: Italy will feature the cool and striking Italian Armed Forces, with a release date in the very short future.
In todays post, well take a first look at the Italian Nation Packs infantry. Future posts will detail new Italian ground vehicles to be followed by air forces.
Lets dig in.
Play it cool with Nation Pack: Italy
We love to spring a good surprise on our player base. But you might be wondering, why now? As you all should know, Italy has been popularly requested by the community to be included in Wargame: Red Dragon for quite some time.
In our opinion, the Mediterranean nation was the last missing piece in our game. With enough domestic designs to justify its place in Wargame: Red Dragon, it would have been a shame for Italy to remain excluded.
Thats why the Italian Armed Forces will finally, and gloriously so, if we might say, make their appearance with the upcoming Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: Italy.
Whats in the box?
Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: Italy will feature Italy as a stand-alone NATO nation in Wargame: Red Dragon. They will bring their unique mix of domestic and foreign materiel to the battlefield, old and brand-spanking new. The capable Italian Armed Forces were the linchpin of any NATO-led Mediterranean operation. They enjoy a long and proud military lineage, from its elite Alpine troops to the fast-moving armored units. So, too, the Italian automotive and armament industries, having produced iconic and noteworthy vehicles during the Cold War and beyond. Among others, these include the AR.76 Campagnola army jeep, the wheeled B1 Centauro, the C1 Ariete main battle tank, the hard-hitting A-129 Mangusta attack helicopter, and the A-11 Ghibli ground-attack aircraft.
Italian Infantry detailed
But first, the Italian foot soldier! Infantry in the Italian Armed Forces remained equipped with small arms stemming from World War 2 or immediate post-war designs for the longest time. The main individual weapon for most soldiers was the BM 59 battle rifle, a locally produced M1 Garand modified with a detachable magazine and selective fire. Some units requiring lighter weapons, such as weapon crews, scouts, and commanders, even retained the MAB 38/49 SMG (considered one of the best of its kind during the war).
The MG 42/59 was the preferred squad automatic weapon, which, as anyone can guess, is a locally produced World War 2-era originally German iconic MG-42 rechambered to the NATO 7,62mm round. Squad anti-tank weapons are either M20A1 Super Bazooka (another upgraded World War 2 weapon) or the Belgian RL-100 Blindicide. In some cases, the M18 57mm recoilless rifle is fielded.
By the late 1980s, Italy has developed its own assault rifle: the AR 70/90. It also went looking for better anti-tank weapons, resulting in the APILAS and even a few PzF 3 becoming available to its troops. Italian Alpine forces favored the recoilless rifle, which resulted in a domestic design, the Folgore 80mm. Although a few special forces units received the Minimi as an off-the-shelves option, the previously mentioned MG 42/59 kept on being Italys main machine gun for the whole duration of the Cold War.
These straight-from-World War 2 weapons were the mainstay of the Italian infantrys armament for most of the Cold War. Only a select few units transitioned to more modern equipment in the late 1980s. This means that within Wargame: Red Dragon, only non-era restricted decks will have access to the most modern weapons.
The main types of Italian infantry
Which will be the main types of infantry for Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: Italy?
- FANTERIA DI LINEA will be your typical grunt, the bread-and-butter infantry.
- LAGUNARI and MAR are both considered naval infantry in-game. In real life, the former can be equated to more riverine or amphibious infantry. These are army units tasked with securing Venices lagoons and riverways. The latter are true marines, being Navy and sea-oriented. Both will provide Italys MARINES decks infantry. The latter units name is a contraction of SAN MARCO, their patron saint.
- PARACADUTISTI are Italys airborne troopers, heir to World War 2s famed Folgore.
- ALPINI are Italys light mountain troops. Though less famous abroad than the units mentioned above, these forces have always been considered the countrys best.

Whats on offer?
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1575820/Wargame_Red_Dragon__Nation_Pack_South_Africa
Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: South Africa will be available for $9.99 / 9,99 (or the equivalent in your local currency). The reason for this price is multifold. First, keep in mind that this Nation Pack is the first in many years, with the number and quality of (new) models exceeding those featured in previous DLC. Not only that, the amount of work required for this expansion was substantial - game development is neither cheap nor straightforward, especially resuming work on a game as complex as Wargame: Red Dragon.
To lessen the wait until September 30th, Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: South Africa can now be freely streamed by our VIP testers. Keep your eyes peeled on your favorite channels to see when this hot stuff drops!
What will the South Africa Nation Pack bring?
Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: South Africa will feature:
- Close to 90 new SADF units, including 20 brand-new vehicle models, as well as many new variants. All feature new Afrikaans and South African-accented English voice-overs.
- These include the ubiquitous Casspir and Ratel APCs (in numerous variants, from IFV, recon, command, mortar, and even SAM), the Rooikat wheeled tank (including variants and prototypes), Eland (license-produced French AML), Cactus (French Crotale), the only tracked Olifant MBT, many armed variants of locally made SAMIL trucks (Ystervark and Bosvark SPAAG, Valkiri and Bateleur MLRS), to the iconic G6 Renoster self-propelled howitzer.
- The Air Force includes old Buccaneer, Vampire and Impala as close-air support, and several French Mirage variants and the local Cheetah as fighter and multirole aircraft. Furthermore, you will find the Atlas Carver prototype, the first full South African prototype plane design (which never left the drawing board).
- Helicopters include the French Alouette III, Puma, Super Frelon and their domestically produced versions and prototypes such as the K-Car, Oryx and XTP-1 Beta. Youll also be able to deploy South Africas very own attack helicopter design, the badass-looking Rooivalk.
- Infantry will include Bokkop regular riflemen, Parabat paratroopers, SASF special forces, and many more units such as militia, recon, MANPADS, engineers. You will find Portuguese-speaking Angolan UNITA squads, as well as SADFs own 32 Battalion (the Buffalos) as a veteran light infantry formation.

Hello there, we are back again!
Now, you might wonder what we have been up to in August. Not sitting quietly, thats for sure.
The release of our new Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: South Africa DLC is getting closer. But before we get there, we wanted to highlight what we have been working on.
Active development
A special team has been chipping away and testing the Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: South Africa for a month. Thanks to their hard work and dedication, we have rebalanced and tweaked the SADF forces in-game, and made sure the new arsenal is as polished as can be. Such as?
Some of the plane load-outs have been changed compared to ones detailed in our [url=https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/251060/view/2993187041046213532
]South African Air Force Gameplay post.
We have reworked some of the models and we are continuing our balancing efforts. This also means that the balance patch we previously promised for the base game has grown significantly in size and scope.
There is more, though!
New units
Based on the teams feedback, we have added two new units to the roster.
- Ratel 90 FSV. An additional Ratel 90 version. A non-transport variant classified as a fire support vehicle in the VHC tab.
- A new Cheetah variant, bringing the total to four: C, D, D2, and E. This will replace one of the previous Mirage models, which happened to be incorrect (Mirage IIIE2Z).

Hello!
We are back with a much-needed update about our upcoming
Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: South Africa DLC. We know you are longing to play our new Nation Pack, but we are still some ways off before our upcoming expansion is ready to be released.
What? Why? When?
Keep reading to find out.
A mea culpa
Game development is hard, and the way to any kind of launch is beset with roadblocks and detours. We know that some of you were hoping for a release soon - as in next week soon - or alternatively sometime in August. That is, unfortunately, not going to happen.
We still need more time with Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: South Africa. Even though unit balancing is done, as most of the unit models, there is plenty of work left. Not only that, August is a very quiet month in which everything slows down. We try to avoid releasing anything in the deepest part of the summer holidays.
There is more: next to Wargame: Red Dragon, we are also working concurrently on two new expansions for or our other popular strategy game (you might have heard about it here or there) Steel Division 2. In all fairness, we bit off more than we could chew, and coupled with the small delays that are always encountered, a post-August launch of the Nation Pack seems ever more likely. Our apologies!
An updated roadmap
When we get close to the launch, well let you know. Until then, we dont want to leave you completely empty-handed. Some new details:
- Most models are now done. You can see new preview screens of several major units - many of them we havent shown previously!
- A silver lining to the delay is that we will be able to organize a beta testing session later in the summer. We will gather dedicated players to make sure all in-game units and forces are well priced and balanced. Keep an eye out for more news!
- Together with the new Nation Pack, weve also been hard at work at some general balance changes to Wargame: Red Dragon. You can find all the proposed updates in the patch log further below.

What happens next?
Thats it for today. Well be back at the end of August with hopefully some interesting news to share. If you want to stay in touch: check out our Eugen forums, or (Facebook page and Twitter)!
Hello!
Welcome back to what is currently our last in-depth look at the upcoming Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: South Africa DLC. We will give you a detailed insight into the gameplay and in-game load-outs of the South African Air Forces (SAAF) rotorcraft in todays post.
As always, everything you read is work in progress and is subject to change. Much like in our previous Air Force Gameplay post, keep in mind that the modeling for each helos ammunition and ordnance load-out is not final.
We are getting closer to releasing Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: South Africa, but we are still some ways off. When the time is right, well let you know. Hang tight!
Supply
Our first unit is a true SAAF workhorse. Since 1967, SAAFs heavy hauler is the French SA.321 Super Frelon. In-game, this cargo helicopter will be in the same category as the American CH-53E or the Soviet Mi-6.
Recon
Two dedicated helicopters will be available in this section, presented as part of a single family:
- The good ol Alouette III, SAAFs oldest and sturdiest flying helo. Available from 1961, this chopper is unarmed.
- The prototype light XH-1 Alpha (1985). Although historically used as a testbed for a new generation of attack helicopters, in-game the unit has been repurposed as an armed recon chopper with Exceptional optics.
Transport
Going from A to B - fast! There will be two units in this category that are, once again, featured within a single family.
- First up is the mainstay SA.330H Puma (1973), armed with a side-door MAG 7,62mm machine gun.
- The domestically built Oryx (1987), which features the same armament, but with improved speed and hit points.
These transport rotorcraft will be available in-game to move Bokkop, Buffalos, Kommandant, Inflict, MILAN, Parabat, Para Pathfinders, Sappers, SASF (both), Strela and Trackers squads and units.
Attack
Rain fire from above with the SAAFs devastating arsenal of attack helicopters. These units are divided into two distinct families:
- The singular Alouette K-Car (1973) as light support chopper. Armed with a side-door 20mm autocannon in much the same configuration as the French Puma Pirate.
- XTP-1 Beta 87 (1987) features the original support and AA configuration, with a 20mm in the nose, four 18-tube pods of 68mm SNEB rockets, and two V3B Kukri short-range air-to-air missiles.
- XTP-1 Beta 90 (1990) was used to test a new indigenous ATGM, making this variant a pure ground attack chopper. It retains the nose 20mm cannon and rocket pods but switches the Kukri A2A missiles for no less than eight Zingwe ATGMs. The latter weapon is an improved version of the Swift missile featured on the ground-based Ratel ZT3-A1, with more range and AP.
- And at last, the classy and deadly looking Rooivalk (1994). Faster, sturdier, and more agile than the XTP-1 Beta, it keeps the 90 variants 20mm nose canon and eight Zingwe, but drops the rocket pods in favor of four Mistral A2A missiles.
Just to make it clear. The above attack family is organized in such a way that in order of appearance, there is one anti-infantry/anti-air unit, one anti-infantry/anti-tank unit, and one anti-tank/anti-air helicopter.

Hello!
We are going to look into the dashing flyboys of the South African Air Force (SAAF) in todays deep dive of our upcoming Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: South Africa. Lets see what the fixed-wing inventory looks like in-game.
Note that everything youll be reading is work in progress and is subject to change. Keep in mind that most of the following plane models are finished, but the planes munitions are still being worked on. This is the main reason the planes are not being shown with any missiles, ordnances, or weapon pods under their wings in this post.
Bombers and Close Air Support
The SAAF kept some of their vintage aircraft operational long into the 80s, using most of these in a dedicated bomber or close air support (CAS) role. In our new expansion, youll get to play with several distinct families, including some golden oldies:
- Rocket family: much like South Korea, SAAF uses the old CL.13B Sabre Mk.6 as a rocket attack aircraft, armed with two 18-rocket 68mm SNEB pods (same as fielded by the British Harrier GR.3). A dedicated successor is also featured, the Impala Mk II. Based on the Italian Aeromacchi MB-326 built under license by the South Africans, this plane features twin 30mm guns in its nose and fielding twice as many rockets.
- Bomber family: the first plane available in this category is the venerable, light Vampire FB-52 (1953!) carrying two Mk.77 napalm bombs. This plane is followed by the heavier Canberra B(I)12 bomber, with a load of eight Mk.83 500kg bombs for some serious Bush War carpet bombing.
- Anti-tank: alone in this role, the Buccaneer S.Mk.50 is equipped with no less than four AS.30 anti-tank missiles. This is the predecessor of the AS.30L, used by the French Arme de lAir in-game. The older AS.30 shares the same long-range and heavy AP (30!) like its successor, but without the laser guidance system. Being only MACLOS, it is much less accurate.
All of the above planes are pre-1975, and therefore available in all era-restricted decks. This also means they lack ECM and are often quite slow.
Fighters
The SAAFs fighters will come in two families: a mainstream section and a single, lone prototype.
- Mainstream fighters include the Mirage IIICZ (1973), equipped with one medium-range R.530 (the same as on the ANZAC Mirage IIIO(F)) and two short-range indigenous V-3A Kukri. These latter missiles are basically a more accurate version of the AIM-9B. Next in line is the Mirage F1CZ (1979) with better optics and ECM and fielding four V-3B Kukri (with the same stats as the V-3A but slightly more accurate). The last member is the Cheetah C (1995 prototype), a heavily modified Mirage III which is faster, more agile, and integrates better optics and much better ECM (40%). This plane is armed with two long-range V-4 R-Darter missiles (similar to the Israeli Derby) and two medium-range V3C Darters - the latter being another improvement on the V-3 series with better accuracy, and more range and damage compared to its predecessor.
- Carver prototype. A never-produced fully domestic South African design (1995 prototype) planned with all the optics and engine improvements of the Cheetah series and better ECM. This fighter deploys with two long-range V-4 R-Darter missiles (same as the Cheetah C), as well as two U-Darter, the latest version upgrade of the V-3 series of missiles, bringing improved accuracy and damage. A drawback compared to the preceding planes is that the Carver is armed with one instead of twin 30mm guns.
Multirole
There is only one set of planes in the Multirole category.
- Mirage IIIEZ (1973) with a single AS.30 (see the Buccaneer above) anti-tank missile and two V-3A short-range missiles. Like its French and export counterparts, it features no ECM.
- Mirage F1AZ (1975) comes armed with four Mk.20 Rockeye cluster bombs and two of the ubiquitous short-range V-3A Kukri missiles.
- Mirage IIIE2Z (1987) is an improved Mirage IIIE benefiting from some of the Cheetah improvements. It includes better optics and ECM (not as good as Cheetah though) and is armed with four Mk.82 HE bombs and two V-3B short-range missiles.
- Cheetah E (1988) is a major improvement over the Mirage III, especially in terms of optics and ECM (30%). This multirole plane is armed with two Mk.83 Griffin (aka GBU-16) 500k laser-guided bombs and two V-3C missiles.
Wild Weaselin
SAAF planes didnt bother with ECM or Wild Weasel missions in the early years of the Border War, as the countrys enemies rarely deployed efficient SAM defenses. Over time, and especially after the delivery of Soviet and Cuban weapon systems to Angola, South African plane losses grew significantly. By 1988, air defenses in Angola were one of the best outside the Warsaw Pact. The SAAF, under embargo, didnt have access to proven anti-radiation munitions and as such had to make do with whatever they could produce domestically. The South African solution was the BARB (Boosted Anti-Radiation Bomb). This Frankenstein of a weapon mated an Mk.83 bomb together with a 127mm rocket booster. Rounding out this ordnance was a makeshift anti-radar guidance sensor. In-game, this weapon will be considered as a very short-range SEAD missile with HE damage only. As a result, it might not destroy a well-armored radar AA unit (such as featured on the Gepard) in one strike. On the other hand, it could still damage its target if it misses by a short margin. Especially if a player had the great idea to keep a supply vehicle near their AA - there is a good chance both units will be taken out in the same attack.
The one South African SEAD plane will be the Cheetah D (1988), featuring the same avionics and characteristics as the Cheetah E, but armed with two BARB bombs and two V-3C Darter missiles. In case you were wondering: while the Cheetah C sports the first letter alphabetically, it is actually the latest and most modern of the Cheetah series. The E and D variants feature a speed of 900km/h (the same as Mirage III) with 30% ECM, while the C flies at 1000km/h with 40% ECM.

Hello!
Welcome back to another deep dive in our upcoming Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: South Africa. In our last post, we put the spotlight on the South African Infantry forces as they would appear in-game, including armament and transport options.
This week, Armor receives our special gameplay treatment. Lets look at what you can expect from the South African armored fighting vehicles, from tanks to SPGs, from imported to domestic designs and rare prototypes!
Please keep in mind that everything is still very much work in progress and is subject to change. In case you were wondering: the integration and balancing of these units is done in close consultation with a leading South African military expert!
Kings of the battlefield
First up: the almighty TANK, which in Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: South Africa is brought to you in three distinct South African families:
- Olifant main battle tank. The tracked heavy-weight brawler of South Africas arsenal comes in a myriad of versions such as the Mk1 (including command variant), Mk1A (1985), Mk1B (1991), and Mk1B Optimum (1994 prototype). The Mk1 can be considered a rough equivalent to the Israeli Shot Kal with a +1 FAV, but slower. With the Mk1A, the Olifant reaches the 2275m range, with a slightly better motorization and accuracy/stab over its predecessor. The Mk1B gets +2 FAV and a major motorization, accuracy and stab upgrade. The Optimum is an up-armored Mk1B with improved optics.
- Loggim prototype. This tank is a 1994 prototype MBT, a planned but canceled South African heavy. It is close to a USMC M1A1(HC) Abrams, featuring the same FAV but lesser side and rear armor, but more accurate and with 23 AP.
- Rooikat wheeled tanks. These rapid and cool-looking vehicles can be deployed in two variants: the Rooikat 76 Mk1C (1989, including a recon variant) and the Rooikat 105 (1994 prototype). With 3 FAV, they are incredibly fast (120km/h) glass-cannons. The 76mm variant has 2100m, while the 105mm gets 2275m range. Their key feature is their high accuracy (65%) and almost full gun stabilization, making these wheeled tanks ideal for hit-and-run strikes.
Reconnaisance
Next up are the reconnaissance units. Aside from the ubiquitous recon Rover jeep, RECON only fields two families of armored recon units:
- Eland 90, both 1978 vehicles. The original Eland 90 is identical to the French AML-90. The Eland 90 ENTAC (prototype) is armed with two extra ENTAC anti-tank missiles, in the same way as the existing Ferret ENTAC (see below).
- Rooikat 76. This vehicle is the same as the wheeled tank variant (see above) but in a dedicated recon configuration.
Tank destroyers
The South Africans have two tank destroyer families:
- RCL Vehicles, which include the ubiquitous Rover 106 (pre-1980), armed with a M40 recoilless rifle, and the Ferret Mk2 106 (1976). This latter unit is jalopied, meaning its turret is removed, and the operator stands in the now-empty turret ring. The Ferret is equipped with an improved M40A1C.
- ATGM Vehicles, which begins with the already mentioned Ferret ENTAC (1975), can also to be found with the ANZAC forces in-game. This unit is followed by the Ferret Mk2 MILAN (1980), another jalopied Ferret, but featuring a MILAN launcher this time around. The vastly more effective Ratel ZT3-A1 (1987) is also available. A non-transport Ratel armed with a ZT3A1 Swift ATGM. These guided missile launchers are 70% accurate, 20 AP and have a 2625m range. The Ratel carries 12 of them, with 3 ready to fire.
Indirect fire
There are quite a few artillery options, including:
- MRLS vehicles. There is a Rover 107 (1981). This one is only encountered in Airborne and Support decks, being a light MRLS based on a Chinese-made 16-tube Type 63 107mm rocket launcher bolted on a Rover jeep. In-game, it will come with an incendiary loadout. The Valkiri (1981) is manufactured on a light Unimog chassis. This unit is the most widespread and standardized South African MRLS, with a classic HE and smoke loadout for its 24-tube 127mm rockets. Finally, we have the Bateleur (1989) built on top of an armored Samil, carrying two 20-tube which can rain down devastating salvos of its 127mm cluster ammunition.
- Mortar vehicles include the Eland 60 (1978) 60mm mortar carrier, identical to the French AML-60. This vehicle evolved into the Ratel 81 (1985) and Ratel 120 (1994 prototype), which are respectively a 81mm and 120mm mortar carriers. All of these vehicles come equipped with HE and smoke rounds.
- SPG vehicles include the venerable WW2 relic Sexton (1944!) with its still decent 25-pdr gun. Nonetheless, this grandfather of self-propelled artillery is rather slow (as you would expect) and only belatedly replaced by the excellent 155mm G6-45 Rhino (1987). This latter unit is a lightly armored but fast-wheeled SPG, being among the worlds most accurate artillery pieces by the end of the Cold War. In-game, it is a 40km ranged 155mm howitzer, with a round dispersion closer to a regular mortar.
A little bit of anti-air
And last up, the South African anti-aircraft vehicles, pooled in two distinct families:
- AA cannon vehicles with the Ystervark (1980) leading the way. This is a Buffel light armored truck fielding an Oerlikon 20mm gun. This vehicle was succeeded by the Bosvark, an armored Samil truck with captured ZSU-23-2 twin 23mm guns. Finally, the Rooikat ZA-35 (1992 prototype) is a variant of the wheeled tank with its turret removed and replaced by a radar-guided quad 35mm system. This means that SEAD can target this unit. In-game, the Rooikat is roughly equivalent to a German FlakPz. Gepard A1 with the same ranges, faster and slightly more accurate for the ZA-35, but with a lower RoF.
- SAM vehicles. The South Africans can field the Cactus (1971), identical to the Crotale, which the SADF received before the French, as well as the Cactus SAHV (1992 prototype). The latter unit is a Cactus used as a testbed for a new SAHV missile under development - in-game featured as an IR version. Replacing the R440 missiles, the SAHV-IR missile provides slightly improved anti-helicopter range and accuracy, with its Fire&Forget trait. Lastly, the Rooikat ZA-HVM (1992 prototype) is a Rooikat with its turret replaced by a system firing SAHV-3 missiles. It retains the anti-helicopter and accuracy of the IR version and improves its anti-airplane range to 4200m range. Being radar-guided, it can be targeted by SEAD.

Welcome back!
In our previous Wargame: Red Dragon posts, we highlighted the various combat arms of the South African Defense Force as they appear in our upcoming, new Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: South Africa.
Well go even deeper this time and lift the veil on how each unit will be featured in-game, including their weapon and transport options. First up on the stage, the almighty grunt - Infantry.
Mind you, please treat all the following as work in progress - subject to change!
Boots on the ground
Before we continue, lets have a happy family shot, and we let you guess whos who!
The SADF Infantry (as foot soldiers in general, not just the INF ones) will be composed of:
- BOKKOP. Your regular soldier, available in all decks (except Airborne). These troops can deploy in all manners of transports (soft-skin, Buffel, Casspir, Ratel, Puma helicopters). They feature R1 (~FN FAL) battle rifles, RPG-7 and Bren LMG. An upgraded 90 variant will come with R4 (~Galil) assault rifles, FT5 and FN MAG.
- MECHBAT are your armored soldiers, available in Mechanized and Armored decks. Their main ride will be the Ratel APC (and variants). They are armed with R2 (R1 with folding stock) battle rifles, LRAC F1, and SS-77 machine-gun. An upgraded 90 variant will feature the R5 (R4 with folding stock) assault rifles, FT5 and SS-77.
- PARABAT are airborne soldiers, available in Airborne and Motorized decks. They will be transported either in soft-skin trucks or the Buffel - and of course helicopters. Armed with R2 battle rifles, RPG-7 and SS-77, the upgraded 90 variant deploys with R5 assault rifles, FT5 and Mini-SS (~Minimi).
- BUFFALOS represent the famous 32 Battalion with its Portuguese-speaking Angolan troops. They are available in all decks, except for Armored and Mechanized. Being light infantry and used to live in enemy territory, they are 15-man squads armed initially with former Portuguese weapons: G3 battle rifles, HK21 LMG, and the ubiquitous RPG-7. Later, an upgraded 85 variant features AKM, RPD, and MILAN missiles.
- SAPPERS are 5-man squads armed with R1 battle rifles and old-school Lifebuoy flamethrowers. They are available in all decks and can be deployed with all transports.
- BURGERMAG are 10-man militia squad, armed with R1 battle rifles and a Super Bazooka. They are accessible in all decks, except for Airborne or Marine, and can only deploy in soft-skin transports or Buffel APCs.
Other Units
Some more specialized units are:
- MILAN teams are the only infantry ATGM available to SADF. They are available in all decks and with all transports.
- STRELA-2 and STRELA-3 teams. These are SADFs (captured) MANPAD squads. They are available in all decks and with all transports. Available in 1988 yet considered as a prototype in-game are the STINGERS (UNITA) squads. These teams are anti-communist Angolan allies of the SADF, which had access to this more modern MANPAD while South Africas forces - under international embargo - werent.
- KOMMANDANT are the SADF commanders, available in all decks (except for Armored) coming in all transports.
- B-10 (UNITA) is the first FIST option for the SADF. These are available in all decks, with the B-10 being the same RCL as the Chinese license-produced Type 78 used by the TNK SHSHU. The second squad option is the Inflict, available from 1985 in Airborne and Support decks. This team deploys with a single 107mm MLRS tube used as pocket artillery by South African airborne troops.
Special Forces and Recon
The list continues!
- SASF. The crme de la crme of the SADF, available in all decks except for Armored and Support, and with all transports except for the Ratel. Armed with R5 battle rifles, LRAC F1 and Strela MANPAD, they also come in a 90 variant with R5 battle rifles, APILAS and Stinger.
- SASF SNIPER. These are elite 2-man recon teams equipped with the (then prototype) Denel NTW-20 heavy sniper rifle. This weapon can be considered a NATO counterpart to the Yugoslavian SENKE.
- TRACKERS. Recon squads as light scouts, armed with R1 battle rifles and Bren LMG, and are available in all decks and with soft-skin, Buffel, and helicopter transports.
- PARA PATHFINDERS is another recon squad restricted to Airborne and Motorized. Available from 1983 in the same transports as PARABAT, but armed with R5 assault rifles, HK21 LMG, and Y-2 automatic grenade launcher.
Transport options
Our SADF grunt will hitch a ride on the battlefield in one of five transport families:
- SAMIL - soft-skin trucks
- BUFFEL - light APC
- CASSPIR - light APC, including the K-Car variant with a 20mm autocannon.
- RATEL - IFV, and while classified as light in terms of armor, these vehicles can sport heavier ornaments. This includes the Ratel 20 (20mm autocannon), Ratel 20 MILAN (same with additional MILAN), Ratel 60 (60mm mortar) and the Ratel 90 (you guessed it with a 90mm gun).
- PUMA 330H - a helicopter, which also includes its domestically upgraded Oryx variant (equal to a Super Puma).

Hello there! We are back again with another Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: South Africa showcase. This time, well be looking at them dakakadas set to be featured: SAAF Helicopters. In case youve missed it, weve already covered several other units of this upcoming Nation Pack:
- We have put a spotlight on the all-important grunt: SADF Infantry. Read all about it here.
- We also took a look at the SADF Armor force, which you can read more about here.
- The flyboys claim all the glory in our SAAF Air Force article, which you can read here.
The Alouette III leads the way
While the South African Air Force (SAAF) experimented with a handful of Sikorsky machines, the first dedicated helicopter use was the Alouette III (and some Alouette II) in the 60s. The diminutive Sud Aviation rotary-wing aircraft saw immediate action in the Rhodesia conflict, where the helicopter demonstrated that although light, it was sturdy and mechanically reliable.
Over the years, South Africa bought over 120 Alouette IIIs, which saw extensive use, taking part in almost all of the military operations and conflicts of the era, including the Border War. The versatile helicopter was deployed in a variety of roles, from transport to recon and flying command posts. Not only that, the Alouette III was extensively modified into several unique designs, such as the K-Car. The famous K-Car (standing for kill-car) was developed by the Rhodesian Air Force, featuring WW II-era German MG-151 20mm autocannons positioned in a side mounting, the same as the French Puma Pirate. The K-Car was extensively used by the Rhodesians during the Rhodesian Bush War, being deployed as command and fire support helicopter key in their Fireforce (vertical envelopment) air assaults.
South Africas workhorse
South Africas flying workhorse was another French helicopter: the dependable SA.330 Puma. The South Africans were one of the first export buyers of this transport helicopter in 1969. The Pumas were extensively used by the paratroopers, either for insertions or extractions after an airdrop. Due to the stringent international arms embargo, the helicopter fleet couldnt be upgraded to the more powerful Super Puma standard. Rather, through various clandestine ways, the required parts were acquired covertly. South Africa would pay for the upgrade of the Portuguese Armys Puma fleet, while Aerospatiale would deliver Portugal their new engines PLUS the South African ones, which were then smuggled to South Africa through a front company in then-Zaire. Meanwhile, South Africa also picked up new Puma airframes from IAR in Romania, which produced the helicopter under license. Once rebuilt, the improved Puma was named the Oryx. A second heavy lifter in SAAFs arsenal was yet another French design, the SA.321 Super Frelon, which was also used as a paratrooper heavy transport or as a logistical helicopter.
Alpha and Beta Prototypes
Another heavily modified Alouette was the Atlas XH-1 Alpha prototype. While never intended to be mass-produced, the design paved the way for what eventually would become the Rooivalk attack helicopter (more about that one further below). The Atlas XH-1 Alpha was also armed with a 20mm gun under the chin, a more modern Vektor one this time, giving it a classic attack helicopter configuration. The rather unusually looking prototype might remind some of the old hands among you of a similar design flying around in the Blue Thunder action movie. Like the Alouette III, the South Africans used the Puma as a test platform for an indigenous attack helicopter. Two Atlas XTP-1 Beta prototypes were built based on the SA.330, which could carry a heavy weapon load: the same 20mm gun as the XH-1 Alpha, as well as 64mm rocket pods and either eight ZT3A2 Ingwe anti-tank missiles or two anti-aircraft missiles.
Attack Helicopters
After these prototypes, the SAAF finally managed to get their hands on their own rotary-winged crown jewel: the Rooivalk attack helicopter. This entirely domestic design benefited from the years of hands-on battlefield experience and the experiments on the XH-1 and XTP-1 testbeds. Its performance in terms of mobility and firepower placed it in the same category as the Apache, Tiger, or Ka-50. Rooivalks armament was roughly similar to the one tested on the XTP-1: a 20mm gun, 64mm rockets, but with the difference of carrying both ZT3A2 AT missiles and smaller Mistral AA missiles. For a nation that never had designed a helicopter before, the Rooivalk was a pretty good first try. Despite flying in 1990, the Rooivalk will be considered a prototype in-game, with the attack helicopters delayed entry and the end of the Cold War and South Africas Apartheid regime.
What will the South Africa Nation Pack bring?

Hey! As you know, Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: South Africa is on its way. Every two weeks, we take a deep dive into a different branch of the SADF as it existed in the 80s during the Bush War. This time, well be detailing the daring flyboys raining death from above: the South African Air Force (SAAF). Weve already covered two other unit rosters of our new Nation Pack:
- We have put a spotlight on the all-important grunt: SADF Infantry. Read all about it here.
- We also took a look at the SADF Armor force, which you can read more about here.
SAAF leading up to the Border War
Lets go on a brief tour of history. Fighting with distinction during World War I and II, the South African Air Force (SAAF) really took on a distinctly South African identity in 1950. In that year, the air warfare branch adopted the Springbok in the roundel center. At the same time, the SAAFs first jet fighter - the Havilland DH100 Vampire - was introduced, which soldier on to see service in the early years of the Border War.
In the era that followed, the countrys air warfare branch was bolstered by the arrival of North American Aviation CL-13B Mk VI Sabres, as well as Mirage III, English Electric Canberra light bombers and Blackburn Buccaneer. Due to the United Nations arms embargo, which ran from the late 70s until 1994, South Africa could not acquire modern weapons or new aircraft. As such, upgrading existing planes or designing new ones - by the local industry - was the only option available to keep a fleet capable and flying.
Mirage: a love story
South Africa, along with Israel, was one of the first nations to understand the potential of the Mirage III, acquiring 16 Mirage IIICZ interceptors between 1962 and 1964 (the Z indicated aircraft specifically supplied to South Africa). The first Mirage fighter squadron was 2 Squadron, the famous Flying Cheetahs, harking back to an illustrious pedigree established during the Korean War. A follow-up order for additional Mirage IIIEZs was issued even before the original batch of Mirages had made their way to the country. This second contingent deployed in a fighter-bomber role with improved avionics.
Despite its reputation as a superb fighter, the Mirage III lacked the range to make it effective over long distances. This was especially noticeable during the combat, ground-strike, and interdiction missions into Angola, with its remoteness and vast spaces, during the Border War. The Mirage III heralded the beginning of a love affair of sorts between the SAAF and various Dassault Aviation Mirage variants. For instance, the Mirage III was developed further into the indigenous Cheetah C aircraft, which also used technology from the Israeli IAI Kfir (which in turn was based on the Mirage 5). The Cheetah C evolved into a South African prototype, the Atlas Carver, a modern two-seat, twin-engined multi-role fighter design capable of dealing with the latest generation Soviet fighters. This project ultimately never saw action and was canceled in 1991. The Mirage story doesnt end here.
Air superiority
The jewel in the SAAF crown was the Mirage F1, as flown by 1 and 3 squadrons. This plane consistently saw considerable action over Angola, shooting down several enemy MiGs. The Mirage F1 was developed as an air-superiority fighter, primarily to succeed the highly successful Mirage III.
Dassaults F1 was a private venture to create a cheaper multi-role aircraft, offering the best operational efficiency with the broadest flexibility. As South Africa began to consider replacements for the Mirage III, the F1 seemed an obvious choice. The F1 offered many improvements over the Mirage III in terms of speed, a general increase in maneuverability, and extended range on ground-attack missions.
Offensive bombing
The Blackburn Buccaneer fleet would also prove to be a vital component of the SAAF offensive capacity during the Border War. Its low-level strike capacity proved invaluable in hundreds of operations throughout the late 1970s and 1980s.
The Buccaneers often flew with another SAAF workhorse: the English Electric Canberra. The Canberra was a streamlined and highly functional jet-powered light bomber. This fleet saw consistent service throughout the conflict, being used primarily as a low-level bomber force, and was a vital component of the most effective airstrikes of the war.
Training Aircraft
The principal training aircraft adopted by the SAAF was the Aermacchi MB 326M, with a local variant produced under license by the Atlas Aircraft Corporation and known as the Impala Mk I. An improved version, the Impala Mk II, took to the air in 1974. This small force of Impalas was not only used to train a new cadre of pilots but saw frequent action over the battlefield.
Though slower, they could operate from rudimentary airstrips and deploy quickly, including during reconnaissance missions or in a CAS role. At times, the Impalas were also used as interceptors, shooting down a number of Soviet-made helicopters. All of these highlighted planes (and variants) will be featured in Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: South Africa. We are going to take a good look at the SADFs other airborne force - helicopters - in a future blog installment.

Hello!
We are back with another Nation Pack: South Africa deep dive. Today, well look at the (wheeled) firepower that made the SADF so infamously lean and mean on the battlefield: the hard-hitting and very mobile Armor.
In case youve missed it, in our previous post, we put a spotlight on the boots-on-the-ground, the all-important grunt: SADF Infantry. Read all about it here.
SADFs Heavyweight Champion
Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: South Africa will give you access to the SADF arsenal as it existed at the end of the Border War and Cold War. The conflict that raged on the frontiers of Southern Africa typically took place on relatively flat arid terrain: savannah and bushland. The vast distances and limited infrastructure influenced overall vehicle design. It led the SADF to focus on wheeled armored fighting vehicles over tracked equipment, emphasizing off-road mobility, long range, less maintenance and logistical support, while retaining firepower.
There was, however, one undisputed heavyweight champion in the SADF vehicle pool which was still tracked: the Olifant (Elephant) tank. Based on the venerable British Centurion, the locally improved Olifant Mk1 is quite similar to the Israeli Shot Kal. This basic variant will be available in-game in either a regular tank or command version.
Over time, the basic version was modified to the Olifant Mk1A, then the Olifant Mk1B, culminating in the prototype Olifant Mk1B Optimum - all armed with a 105mm gun. The experience with Centurions and Olifants led to the first true indigenous design, codenamed Loggim. One demonstrator was built of this design: a Leopard 2-like tank sporting a 120mm gun and heavy frontal armor. However, due to the end of the Cold War, the project was canceled.
Hard-hitting, wheeled firepower
Please note that the following list doesnt feature each and every variant; expect some surprises further down the line!
The vast majority of SADFs units are wheeled, with light armor but highly mobile and sporting a substantial amount of firepower. Some of the SADFs equipment is instantly recognizable. One of these is the Casspir APC. Infamous for patrolling South Africas townships during apartheid, this vehicle was originally designed for the Border War and can be considered the first-ever MRAP (Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicle). The Casspir features a unique (at the time) V-shaped hull, which made it especially resistant against mines and IEDs. The Casspir APC will come fitted out in MG or K-Car (20mm) variants. Another iconic vehicle is the Buffel (Buffalo) light APC, which can be deployed in both transport and CV variants.
We will also feature the Ratel series of IFVs. Lightly armored, the VAB-like Ratel comes in many shapes and forms: Ratel 20 (20mm autocannon), Ratel 60 (60mm breech mortar), and Ratel 90 (90mm main gun). The vehicle loses its transport function with the dedicated self-propelled mortar variant Ratel 81 and Ratel 120, while the in-game CV variant deploy as the Ratel Command and the Ratel ZT-3A1 features an ATGM launcher.
One of the coolest looking SADF designs was the wheeled Rooikat (African caracal) series. This 8x8 armored car is highly mobile on any kind of terrain, light but armed with a fully stabilized 76mm gun. The gun, a Denel GT4, was derived from the Italian OTO Melara 76. Thats right, dust off your favorite meme - this is indeed the gun used by the glorious Otomatic!
Not to worry: while deadly accurate, even on the move, the Denel GT4 doesnt have the same RoF, nor can it engage flying targets. The Rooikat was developed into several local, export, and prototype variants, including the Rooikat 105mm (with a 105mm gun), Rooikat ZA HVM (SAM launcher), and the Rooikat ZA-35 (twin 35mm SPAAG).
Other vehicles
Before developing its particular brand of wheeled armored vehicles, the SADF relied on various imported armored cars, which remained in service for a long time as either recon units or ATGM carriers.
Several variants of the famed British Ferret armored car were deployed, up-gunned with either a M40A1 recoilless rifle, ENTAC or MILAN missiles. Another example was the French AML, renamed as the Eland with both a 60 or 90 variant, with the latter version featuring ENTAC missiles on top of its main gun. Another French vehicle is the Cactus light SAM, which is basically a French Crotale.
SADF uses the ubiquitous British Land Rover jeep in various roles: recon, TD, CV. Soft-skinned transport and logistic vehicles are all variants of domestic SAMIL trucks. These South African trucks also see their chassis used for several self-propelled light support units, such as the Ystervark (SPAAG), Bateleur (MLRS), ...
This post wouldnt be complete with another renowned South African vehicle, the G6-45 Rhino 155mm self-propelled howitzer. Best to think of it as a non-prototype, lightly armored, but very mobile off-road French Caesar. Having entered service in 1987, the G6 was the first real SADF self-propelled artillery gun since the aging and battle-weary World War 2 Sexton - the only other tracked vehicle in the SADF arsenal.

Hello!
Welcome back. As promised in our reveal of Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: South Africa, every two weeks well be highlighting an exciting new aspect of our upcoming expansion.
Today, we are looking at the boots on the ground of SADF during the Border War and the mainstay of any army: the all-important Infantry.
Keep reading to find out more.
Historical Context
The Border War took place during the 70s and 80s. It pitted the South African Defense Force and local allies UNITA against several different guerilla groups in Namibia and Angola. These guerillas were in turn backed by communist-regimes, including the Soviet Union, but chiefly the Cuban armed forces. What began as an asymmetric conflict turned increasingly into something much larger, with Border War cumulating in the largest Cold War tank engagement on the African continent with the 1988 Battle of Cuito Cuanavale.
The area that saw the biggest amount of fighting was sparsely populated, with only a limited infrastructure network in place. The landscape was bush and savanna. This kind of harsh terrain favored quick-moving units, which became the SADFs specialization over time, with the South African arsenal almost wholly made up of mobile wheeled (compared to tracked) vehicles.
Likewise, infantry forces, including quick reaction formations, light infantry, and special forces, were used significantly during the Border War. The SADF relied heavily on its infantry to patrol the South West African frontiers against guerilla raids. With a porous border, frequent ambushes on the supply lines in Namibia occurred. The combat in the latter part of the 80s turned into an evolving set of bigger, conventional engagements, with the SADF infantry fighting alongside armored units against equally heavily equipped guerrilla and Cuban forces.
The SADFs infantry force of the 80s was built on a large citizen force, with about 90% of its manpower part-time reservists or local militias (the infamous Commando-system). The army was divided into a core of volunteers, supported by conscripts performing a one-year (later extended to a two-year) national service.
Boots on the ground
Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: South Africa allows you to take command of a wide variety of new SADF infantry units. The South African grunts were called Bokkop, which is an Afrikaans slang term that signifies Buck head. This has further significance as the springbok, an antelope native to Southern Africa, was (and is) the national animal of the country.
Bokkop soldiers wore the trademark Nutria brown-beige fatigues, most commonly known in the army as Browns, while their main weapon was the Vektor R1 (a license-produced FN FAL) battle rifle. This gun was later changed to the Vektor R4 (licensed variant of the Israeli Galil) assault rifle. The timeless Bren LMG could also be found, which was later replaced with the FN MAG or the indigenous Vektor SS-77.
SADF squads were frequently equipped with captured Soviet RPG-7. Later on, this anti-tank weapon was replaced by the South African-made Denel FT5, an anti-tank rocket launcher inspired by the French LRAC F1 and APILAS.
Heavy Equipment
Regarding heavier infantry weapons, the SADF never developed its own ATGM or MANPADS during the Cold War. Instead, it relied on imported or captured stocks. This included the French-German MILAN missile in the 70s, which replaced the old M40A1 RCL as an anti-tank weapon.
While not having to fear enemy air forces during the early stages of the Border War, the skies were heavily contested in the final years, with the South Africans at times losing air superiority. Captured Strela MANPADs, as well as Stinger missiles delivered by the CIA, provided a level of protection from air attacks.
One indigenous South African design was the RO-107 Inflict, an improvised weapon that proved quite effective in a fire support role. It was made from a single 107mm tube of a captured Chinese Type 63 107mm MRLS. Cumbersome to haul around, especially in combat, it still found use by the SADF airborne troops as a man-portable piece of pocket artillery.
While regular Bokkop soldiers either walk or travel in trucks or light Casspir APCs, their Mechbat comrades in arms (mechanized infantry equivalent) ride to battle in the Ratel IFV.
Kommandos and Special Forces
Of course, the SADF wouldnt be the fighting force it was without the presence of the infamous Kommando militia. Thats right: the present-day concept of commandos (elite light forces or special forces) stems from the old use of Afrikaner-manned units, employed during the First and Second Boer War (1899-1902) against the British. These bands consisted of volunteer militia acting as fast-moving but lightly armed guerilla units. The SADF kept using the militia-style commando system, with Kommandos mainly employed in much the same way as contemporary British Territorials. Some volunteered for service in the conflict zone during the Border War[i/] where they were used in limited numbers.
Many of the special forces employed by the SADF were created or commanded by the same man, Colonel Jan Breytenbach. These included the airborne Parabat and their specialized Para Pathfinder recon forces. These were light SADF shock troops. Better trained than their average grunt, these units made extensive use of Puma and Alouette helicopters during combat operations.
The South African Special Forces (SASF) were better known as Recces. These elite operatives were given access to almost any weapons available in the SADF arsenal, including domestic, secretly imported despite the UN embargo, or even captured from the enemy.
Although segregated due to the white-led South Africa government and its infamous apartheid policy, Black and Coloured (a multiracial ethnic group from South Africa) soldiers were found in various SADF units. In the early stages of the Border War, skilled local bushmen were recruited by the South Africans as Trackers to locate and engage enemy combatants.
One of the more infamous mixed-race SADF units was the 32 Battalion, aka the Buffalo Battalion. This light infantry formation was formed from Portuguese-speaking anti-communist Angolans and white South African NCOs and officers. It was stationed in Angola itself, forming a buffer between the communist-backed guerilla groups and South Africa. This contingent was also a foreign legion of sorts, featuring among its ranks Australian, American, Portuguese, and former-Rhodesian volunteers. Initially equipped with old Portuguese weaponry, such as the G3 and HK 21, it later made use of liberated AKM and RPD weapons, allowing the battalions troops to operate for long periods behind enemy lines using captured materiel.

A fresh breeze with Wargame: South Africa
First off, you might ask, why is Eugen making this new Nation Pack for Wargame Red Dragon?
With an influx of new players engaging with our still popular RTS, we knew it would be worthwhile to create a new Nation Pack expansion. South Africa has been high on our list for quite a while. The stars aligned and the time was right to put in some effort - and reward our Wargame players with a host of cool new toys and a whole new nation!
With Wargame Red Dragon - Nation Pack: South Africa, we will add close to 90 new vehicles, all fully voiced in either Afrikaans or South African-accented English. From the Olifant MBT and Casspir APCs to Cheetah fighters, SASF special forces, and even 32 Battalion troops, youll find our SADF arsenal exhaustively researched and historically accurate!
Historical South African context
Wargame Red Dragon - Nation Pack: South Africa puts the spotlight on the SADF, the South African Defense Force, the national army of apartheid-era South Africa. Mostly composed of conscripted white South Africans (both English and Afrikaans-speaking males), the SADF did feature a sizable amount of Black and Coloureds soldiers in distinct, segregated formations.
With unequal racial discrimination (apartheid) underpinning the South Africans republic existence, the SADF fought numerous conflicts, the most famous being the Border War against Communist-backed guerrillas both in occupied Namibia and nearby Angola. This asymmetric conflict ran from the late 60s to 1989, increasing in intensity, especially in the later years. Cuba and South Africa became more and more actively involved as respective backers of local guerrilla groups vying for power and control, going so far to field their own forces on the battlefield. This culminated in the famous tank engagement in 1988 of the Battle of Cuito Cuanavale, the largest of its kind of the Cold War on the African continent.
The Border War concluded with a peace treaty giving Nambia its formal independence in 1990. The SADF became the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) in 1994, after the first free and multiracial election of the country, which saw Nelson Mandela become president.
Why did we pick South Africa?
South Africa is one of the rare countries missing from Wargame Red Dragon which featured a large indigenous armaments industry producing a series of cool-looking vehicles, from IFVs to helicopters. What about the Ratel, Casspir, Buffel, Rooikat, G6 Renoster, Rooivalk?
As a highly mobile and aggressive army, the SADF relied more than any other nation on speed and mobility, with a strong preference for wheeled armored vehicles. Going for motorized makes sense in the savannah and bush-like environment of Southern Africa. There was hardly any mechanized (tracked) weaponry in the SADF arsenal, besides the Olifant main battle tank.
The SADF of the Cold War was built for a different type of conflict: a highly mobile strike force, quickly able to cover vast distances, with a strong emphasis on aggressive infantry combat. It was also one of the few countries that fought an open war (even though the extent and length of Border War itself was hidden from South Africas own population).
So: plenty of reasons why we wanted to include the SADF as a fighting nation in a new Nation Pack!
What is a Wargame Nation Pack?
In case you forgot: Nation Packs are self-contained expansions for Wargame Red Dragon highlighting the fighting forces of a specific nation. They feature a host of extensively researched new units, from soldiers squads to vehicles, prototypes, planes, helicopters, and other equipment. Nuclear Winter is Coming (Conquest): increasing one sector's value from 1 to 2. Punchbowl, removing the contral sector, outside of the town. Hell in a very small place, central and bottom zones slightly extended in favor of blue side. 38th Perpendicular, increasing the size of India sector to facilitate access to the city above. Highway (big), central secttor's value increased from 1 to 2. Wrecks & Rocks, extending Foxtrot sector to include some woods in order to help blue side securing it.

BALANCE: GENERiC: - Autocanons noise increased by about 20% - Tank filters in the armory fixed. - Light supply vehicles (500 and 800 supply) are now available in Airborne decks - Howitzer ammo consumption modified to take accuracy and reactivity into account. In order to accede to one of Red Dragon's communitys main request, Eugen Systems has decided to add new maps to the game. And since many among you have been lobbying for the porting of European Escalation or AirLand Battle classic maps to the new installment, we have decided to organize a poll to let you vote for your favorite ones. The most popular will be redone, with Asian assets, and included to Red Dragon. Read more here: http://aoa.eugensystems.com/poll-bringing-new-maps-red-dragon/

Greetings everyone,
Wargame Red Dragon’s 3rd free DLC is now ready and playable. It will brings the game more than 60 new units to flesh out the three countries composing the Scandinavian coalition (Sweden, Norway & Denmark), and put them on par with their allies and foes.
And as always, a patch will be released alongside the DLC, with some major balance changes.
But this DLC won’t be released during the Christmas sales’ frenzy, and hence its official release is delayed to January. Yet, for you veteran players, it won’t really make a difference for we will allow anyone willing to play it to do so in an unrestricted “early access open beta” on a separate Steam branch.
For that purpose, and to avoid any constraining manipulations to switch back and forth between versions (“vanilla” & beta), we’ve developed a dedicated launcher for you to select, at each launch, on which branch you want to play without any time lost downloading the right one.
This has the double advantage of giving you access right now, and giving us the time to add some (originally unplanned) features to the DLC: new maps. We’ve heard the popular requests for new ones, and we will grant it. Therefore, we will use the opportunity of this early access version to introduce, “in a near future”@, new maps to be tested by anyone volunteering. This way, by the time we officially release the DLC, we will have had time to test and modify those maps, and also add/refine some balance changes.
The version released today is PC only. Mac & Linux versions shall follow shortly.
-----------------------
HOW TO JOIN THE BETA?
STEP 1: Right-clic on Wargame Red Dragon in your game library.
STEP 2: Select “Properties” (last option). A window will open.
STEP 3: Select the “Beta” tab in the new window.
STEP 4: In the scrolling list, select the "beta - DLC3 Early Access" version. The game will start downloading (depending on your settings, it may ask for a confirmation).
STEP 5: Once the download is complete, when launching the game, a new launcher windown will open:
Through this launcher, you will be able to easily switch back and forth between the "vanilla" & "early access" version, without time lost downloading files. This means that, once you've gotten on the beta branch, you don't have much reasons to go through the lenghty process of going back to the original branch unitil official release, since you can access both version from this one.
