Dream Catcher 1.8.1.1 : Fancy Update (Quick Fix)

(July 21th 2025)

There were a few bugs that snuck in the last update. This quick fix addresses all the ones that were reported.

IMPROVEMENTS

  • Balance : Tulpas in the reserve now get 25% of the experience even if they were not summoned.

  • Balance : Tulpas regenerate 2% of their max mana every turn.

  • Balance : Everytime you fail a catch, the catch chance increases by a small amount (Up to 33%).

  • UI : You can now check the tooltip of monsters in the formation screen.

  • World : Beds are now useable in the dream world and will simply wake you up.

  • World : CDs now give a popup telling you the name of the CD you just collected.

  • World : After some feedback, I removed the green light from the blue room (This sentence makes sense in context).

BUG FIXES

  • Fixed : Some skills were not checking the correct values when deciding if you could afford them. Sting in particular allowed you to kill yourself by using it.

  • Fixed : Tooltips in the breeding menu would show all stats as 0 if the tulpa had the passive Hivemind.

  • Fixed : The chef's uniform did not render and in some cases made you a floating head.

Dream Catcher 1.8.1 : Fancy Update (Part 2)

(July 16th 2025)

This update focuses on adding passives and skills to all tulpas to differentiate them more from eachothers. There are still missing features I want to add such as placing mines and walls, but this is a big step forward. To compensate for the lack of new tulpas last update, I added 6 tulpas instead of the usual 3. I hope you enjoy this new version.

ADDITIONS

  • Tulpa : Added 6 new evolutions.

  • Tulpa : Added 14 new passives.

  • Tulpa : Added a massive amount of new skills.

  • World : Added a ton of new NPCs to fight.

  • World : Added more objects and images to the world to make it feel less empty.

  • World : Added particle effects to certain zones for the atmosphere.

  • UI : Added 2 new elemental backgrounds.

  • UI : Added notifications when you unlock new clothes or new skills.

IMPROVEMENTS

  • UI : Improved the evolution animation.

  • UI : Improved nearly every species' description.

  • UI : Made some tooltips more readable.

  • AI : Enemies will now use status effect skills and heals.

  • AI : Tulpas are guaranteed to spawn with at least 1 damaging skill equipped, including starters.

BALANCE CHANGES

  • World : Tulpas will no longer chase you once your trainer is a certain level above them.

  • World : Moved the breeding CD and dresser around to be less tedious to find for new players.

  • World : One of the secret worlds spawn lampicks instead of snoofs now.

  • Battle : Trainers can only put 3 tulpas on the field at the same time.

  • Battle : Movement and skills now uses different points that you get at the beginning of your turn allowing you to move, attack and then move again in some cases.

  • Battle : Using summon and retrieve no longer ends your turn (or use a skill point).

  • Battle : Rebalanced every tulpa's stats to be less homogenous.

  • Battle : Rebalanced some elements, notably Insect to be less boring and weak.

BUG FIXES

  • Fixed : Crash that would happen if you hovered the mouse over portraits while summoning.

  • Fixed : Bug where bosses would fail to spawn sometimes.

  • Fixed : Bug where holding the camera and entering the PC at the same time softlocked you.

  • Fixed : Bug where trainers would be missing when you challenge them again but not give up when you kill their last tulpa, softlocking you in battle.

  • Overworld : Whether or not tulpas join in against you is now based on whether they are chasing you and if you are reachable instead of being distance-based.

  • Animation : Added scene transition animations to doors, waking up and battles.

  • Battle : Dodge chance is now more consistent throughout the game.

  • Battle : Made catching low level tulpas easier.

  • Battle : Made Insect-type strong against Normal-type but weak against itself.

  • Battle : Damage and healing are now rounded down to 1 instead of 0.

  • Battle : Retrieving and then re-summoning tulpas no longer remove their status effects.

BUG FIXES

  • Battle : Fixed a bug where starting a battle without a tulpa but later summoning it from the reserve wouldn't award it experience.

  • Overworld : Fixed several edge cases based around entering battle immediately after entering a door or pausing right as you get attacked.

KNOWN ISSUES

  • Overworld : Sometimes, switching clothes rapidly causes the wrong textures or models to load. This is purely visual and fixes itself when changing clothes again or closing and reopening the game.

Dream Catcher 1.7.5

[May 11th 2025] Here is another update just in time for Steam's Creature Collector Fest tomorrow. This update also focuses on improving battles. Specifically, making battles easier to understand. This will probably be the last "Battle Update" but battles will keep improving little by little every update. My plan is to add around 3 evolutions per update on average. BALANCE - Gave Myskit a passive called "Oracle". - Added 3 new evolutions for Beeble, Cubble and Beasel. - Balanced Beeble, Cubble and Beasel's skills (weaker starting skills, stronger skills after evolving). - Added various new skills such as "Wind Slap", "Push" and "After-image". - Reduced dodge chance significantly. - Renamed "Immobile" to "Stubborn". CHANGES - UI : Redesigned the summary and bestiary screens. - UI : Added tooltips to the bank and breeding screens. - UI : Added tooltips to passives and skills so you know what they do. - UI : Added an indicator to new things when they are added to your bestiary. - UI : Inverted right and left click on tulpa portraits. - BATTLE : Redesigned the entire battle arena and how things are rendered. - BATTLE : You can now see the miss chance, health and mana of whatever you are attacking. - BATTLE : The entire range of your attacks are now shown as dark tiles. - BATTLE : It is now more obvious whose turn it is. - BATTLE : Improved animations so tulpas face eachother while they attack one another. - BATTLE : Status effects now have animations. - BATTLE : Buffs now stack up to 3 times. - BATTLE : Stats that are buffed will render as higher (and green) in the tulpa's tooltip. - TEXTURE : Improved the textures of some tulpas (Especially Nyarn's yarn ball). - CONTROLLER : Improved the feel of controller support in battle. - ??? : Made several colors brighter (Element colors, UI elements, etc.). BUG FIXES - Fixed a bug where your own tulpas dying gave you experience. - Fixed a bug where the experience bar would show 1 frame of being the wrong level sometimes. - Fixed a bug where controller support would break during the tutorial's final fight. - Fixed a bug where cubble's passive would steal nearby buffs and heals.

Dream Catcher 1.7.4

[May 1st 2025] On may 12th, Steam's Creature Collector Fest will begin. For this occasion, I've been preparing this version of Dream Catcher which focuses on making combat more fun. I hope you all enjoy it. CHANGES - VISUAL : All tulpa textures have been remade to have a more consistent angles, shadows and outlines. - VISUAL : Greatly improved attack animations (Still pretty rudimentary). - BATTLE : Tulpa will now dodge attacks based on how much agility/precision is involved. - BATTLE : Complete overhaul of the skill system. - BATTLE : Some skills now use mana/health as resource. - BATTLE : Added status effects (Fire, Poison, Bleed) and stat buffs. - BATTLE : Added passive abilities to certain tulpas. - BATTLE : The element chart can be accessed during battle. - BATTLE : Renamed "Give Up" to "Wake Up" to make it clear what will happen if you click. - INTERFACE : Newly gained experience renders as yellow to see the difference easier. - INTERFACE : When a tulpa levels up, its level will render as green to signify it changed. - INTERFACE : You can see a tulpa's experience bar in their summary. - INTERFACE : Added numerous tooltips to various UI elements (Ex: tulpa names in the bank). - Added (some) evolutions. - BALANCE : Made the main character's default light radius brighter so light tulpas are not as necessary. - BALANCE : Reduced terracute's agility because a clay pot should not dodge this much. - BALANCE : Catching a tulpa will now reward you with experience. - BALANCE : Increased the experience you need to level up a little bit (Sharper curve). - BALANCE : Previously, the stats you get each level was reduced to accentuate strategy over grinding. Stats have been increased so levels matter again, but are still lower than they used to be. - BALANCE : Increased the trainer's defense early-game but doesn't increase quite as much each level. BUG FIXES - BATTLE : Fixed a bug where the enemies could use all of their skills, not just their equipped ones. - BATTLE : Fixed a bug where you could summon dead tulpas with 0 health. - BATTLE : Fixed a bug where pulling a draw would not wake you up and let you walk around with 0 health. - INTERFACE : Fixed a bug where eggs could fly. - INTERFACE : Fixed a bug where you could get additional egg info by checking their tooltip in the breeding app. - SAVE FILES : Savefiles from the very first version of the game can now be opened again.

BUG FIXES - Fixed multiple bugs in the enemy AI (Ex: enemies will not skip their turn when there is nowhere to walk anymore). - Fixed controller support which was broken last update. - Fixed a bug where leveling did not increase your health to maintain your health to max health ratio. - Fixed a bug where the summary wouldn't update a monster's size if monsters were identical in every other way but size. - Fixed a bug where old savefiles would fail to convert to the new format if you skipped multiple updates. Now you can open savefiles from years ago. - Fixed a visual glitch where lighting would flicker when you unpause the game if the camera was rotated inbetween pausing and unpausing. - Fixed a bug where the camera was too zoomed in during your first battle.

Dream Catcher 1.6

[October 11th 2024] This is easily the biggest update to date. Most of the changes are graphical but there are a few quality of life improvements. BIG IMPROVEMENTS - Monsters are now made of proper god-fearing cardboard. - The monster portraits in the bestiary and summary screens are now animated and showcase the real size of monsters. - Added the ability to tilt the camera temporarily by holding right click, Letting go of right click will make the camera gravitate back to the default position. - Added a proper skybox with clouds and asters to go with the new ability to see the sky. - Made a brand new tutorial with much better graphics. - Improved the light effect of some followers. - Added a light effect to more monsters when they follow you (Pupkin and Clunker). SMALL IMPROVEMENTS - Eggs render less pixelated. - Increased the speed at which textures load. - Added an option to turn off shadows (Can increase the framerate by up to 15% on some machines). - Added an option for mouse sensitivity (Only affects the speed of the camera). - Improved the scale, rotation and offset of various monsters and monster icons. - Improved the general quality of most textures. - Slightly improved the quality of shadows in general. - Collectibles look better (They rotate and look like what they are supposed to be). BUG FIXES - Fixed a bug that would cause monsters to be duplicated when captured in some cases. - Fixed a bug that let you catch 2 starters when they were too close together. - Door highlights no longer render above the main character. - Fixed all memory leaks. - FIxed a bug where the lighting would get much worse at random intervals for no reason. - There were multiple ways to make monsters appear for 1 frame before being replaced with another, these types of bugs have all been removed. FIXED REGRESSIONS - Re-added the slippery physics in the ice cave in Mint Mountain. - Characters are now the correct colors in the save select screen instead of just grey. - Fixed a bug that caused monsters to never be a recolor introduced in the previous update. ADDED REGRESSIONS - Temporarily turned off the rain in Sakura Shore and snow in Mint Mountain. These effects will be replaced by a proper weather system later. This update is the largest update in Dream Catcher's history but I'd like to keep that momentum going. The next update will focus on improving battles. I intend to get rid of ALL regressions in the next update or the one after. This means evolutions and decent movepools are on their way. Here is an updated roadmap.

[ 2024-10-11 23:31:09 CET ] [ Original post ]

Dream Catcher 1.5.6

[August 31th 2024] CHANGES - Added a linux version (If it doesn't work for you for whatever reason, you can still turn on proton). - Improved the UI borders. - Improved fog a little bit. - The demo version now has a different splashscreen on the main menu to signify it is a demo. - Monsters now spawn facing a random direction. - Fixed a bug where some buttons would press even if you drag out of them before releasing. FIXED REGRESSIONS - Re-added antialiasing as an option (Off by default). - Turned saving on when you X out of the window (Was turned off because of a bug that corrupted savefiles in some circumstances). BUG FIXES - Fixed a bug where proton could not run the windows version of the game because the save folder was inaccessible. - Fixed a bug where you could hear noises like monsters walking and waterfalls during battle in certain maps. - Fixed a bug where the breeding CD would not spawn in newer savefiles or in some circumstances spawn as a torch. - The highlight of objects doesn't render above the character as often (but it still does sometimes). - Fixed a bug where changing the computer's colors but not the background before closing would save it as an invisible background. FUTURE Things have a tendency not to go according to plans. This is a reality I'm slowly accepting. My plan is to make the next update a big one. 1.6 will be the first named update: "The Cardboard Update". It should fix every regression left in the game. It will also contain large features that were promised a long time ago such as a weather system, day/night cycle, etc. The next announcement will include an updated roadmap but the plan is still the same. The only thing is the "Nightmare Update" that was planned for october is very unlikely to materialize. It seems very unlikely I will get everything I wanted to do done by then. The spookies might have to wait another year (or, god forbids, come out in the middle of some random non-spooky month).

Dream Catcher 1.5.5

[July 20th 2024] This is a small quality of life update. CHANGES - Kitwit's light source now looks like a candle flame. - Removed some unused options. - Eggs now showcase the monster's actual colors. - Some species now have unique patterns on their eggs. - You have to hatch eggs to see most information about what's inside. - Added a more obvious cancel button when aiming a skill in battle. - Added a health bar to the summary screen (Yeah this was a oversight, sorry). - Added signs to the tutorial. BUG FIXES - Fixed a bug where beating the tutorial crashed the game based on your follower. - Fixed a bug where deleting a monster sometimes crashed the game. - Fixed a bug where you couldn't close dialogue boxes with the mouse. QUICK NOTE I intend to participate in next month's Monster Tamer Direct. This means that updates will be slower than normal so I can concentrate on making promotional art.

Dream Catcher 1.5.4

[July 12th 2024] This update is a bit more experimental than most. Please give me as much feedback as possible. CHANGES - Added some very basic rain and snow effects to some rooms. - Re-added the follower. - The follower's pathfinding was improved drastically (but it still gets stuck fairly regularly). - You can now choose who is your follower (if any), previously the follower was your strongest monster and you could not turn it off. - Slightly improved the lighting in some rooms. - Slightly adjusted the camera downward. BUG FIXES - Fixed a bug where capturing monsters became exponentially easier the higher your level was, even if the enemy's level was the same as yours.

[ 2024-07-13 03:27:04 CET ] [ Original post ]

Dream Catcher 1.5.3

[July 6th 2024] This update focuses on presentation, especially in the audio department. CHANGES - The experience curve was changed for a smoother gameplay loop. - Changed the turn order in battles such that the trainer can only do 1 action per round. - Capturing is closer to how it used to be (slowly fill up a progress bar and disappears when fully captured, the bar fills faster based on your most charismatic monster and you cannot catch more than 1 monster at the same time). - Monsters that are dead can still be placed in the formation, but they will appear greyed out to signify they are dead. - Some zones that used to have black fog to "fake darkness" now have proper darkness and are kind of spooky. BUG FIXES - FIxed a visual bug where the highlight on NPCs was off-center. - Fixed a visual bug where skills were sometimes off-center in the skill select screen.
