After a long period of down time we have started development on Protoball again. We've started from scratch in Unreal Engine 5.6 and have rewritten the game entirely Please join the to find other players, and we appreciate your patience as we continue to improve and grow Protoball.

The year is 2113 - Protoball is a futuristic sports shooter. Protoball blends FPS/TPP shooting mechanics with sports game play. Players athletically jump, slide, run, grind, and dash their way around the arena trying to pass the Protoball through their opponents goal. Players can shoot curve balls, passes, bounce shots, fake-outs and more.

Shoot your opponent with an energy shield projectile, or use it to deflect the ball and make a big play. Curve the ball, pass the ball, bounce the ball and more... Your skill and creativity is the only real limit.

We are currently still in early development, and our vision for Protoball is grand. We're a small but dedicated indie duo developing this game for the love of the game. Join us and together we will make Protoball the best that it can be. If you join the discord and ask any of the Playtesters and you'll find that we've incorporated and implemented many of the community's suggestions and ideas. Updates to Movement and Reflex

We've updated the Training game mode "Reflex" go give it a shot! See how many balls you can grab and get to the top of the ball grabbing leaderboard.

We also changed movement timings when in possession of the ball, the ball carrier's speed is slower by just a bit.

RANKS/STATS HAVE BEEN RESET

[u]**Major Mechanic Updates!**[/u]
We've adjusted the speed of almost everything- run speed, air speed, ball charge speed, shield charge speed, speed speed and other speed too. We think this feels really good, we've been testing in the discord and would appreciate any feedback you have.

[u]**Major Spectator Updates!**[/u]
While in Spectator if you click on a player, ball, or shield it will attach to the actor and you can then use your mouse and WASD to pan around the object while your camera auto-follows. RMB will toggle through actors.

[u]**New Passing Mechanic!**[/u]
While looking at a teammate an arrow will appear over their head, press F to initiate Pass mode while looking at your teammate (small indicator on HUD will appear over their head), looking at any other teammate will toggle the lock to them, shooting the ball will pass it directly to that player. Press F once again to leave pass mode (and dunk the ball yourself?). R will look at the focused teammate while in pass mode. **Press Q (Lob shot) while in pass mode to shoot a quick pass without having to click and hold LMB to charge. **

[u]**New Kill Feed**[/u] - kill feed is now in for various actions, style of the kill feed is not final, first draft is in now.

*Other Things -*

  • - Grinds are wonky, you can get teleported if you ride it until the end. The best thing to do is jump off the rail (SPACE) before you reach the end.
  • - Reflex / catching balls is ready for testing, give it a shot in the Training Menu. See how many balls you can catch and get on the leaderboard!
  • - If you discover an issue please join our discord.gg/protoball and let us know! And meet the other playtesters too.

Don't forget to look around the Locker Room in the menu, there are a couple characters (all early dev/beta characters) and some leaderboards for various stats. Including the 100v1 - also 100v1 is ripe for a change up with the new ball charge adjustments, I bet new times are achievable.

New Character & Basic Matchmaking

Matchmaking right now is unranked, and runs on listen servers (hosted by one of the players). Listen servers/Player Hosted servers may have weird quirks that you don't get in Dedicated Servers, but at least you can play with your friends when we're not hosting official servers during this test period!

Rolled Back

The update broke something for new players playing for the first time. This is just a roll back to the last stable version. Nothing different in gameplay, just removes a character and some Match making features that were in testing.

Movement and Flow!

This is the early development build of the remake of Protoball. Right now things are simple and we're building up on top of the foundations. As such, at the time of this writing, customizable keybinds are not in the game. They will be soon.

WASD to move around, this also controls SPIN direction and DASH direction. You can, and should, dash/slide backwards by holding S. SPACE jumps, you get 3 jumps. While in the air press CTRL to "Fast Fall" and come to the ground faster, if you land on an enemy you'll stun them.

E catches the ball, you have more timing forgiveness in the new version. You can press E right before the ball gets to you and hold it for just a moment.

Left Mouse Button shoots the ball, click and hold to charge a full shot.
While holding the ball RIGHT CLICK to initiate a curve shot. Used WASD (can combine keys) to choose a spin direction, tap ALT to lock your spin direction in. Right click again to turn curve ball off.

Right Mouse Button brings out an energy shield. Click and hold LMB to charge the shield shot. Right click after shooting the shield to self-detonate the shield on demand.

R looks at the ball, but does not follow the ball.

Q quick lob shot, good for self passing or if you're holding a Charge and want to cancel the charge shot.

The trick to Protoball is MOVEMENT! This game is built on athletic movement. Practice getting around the arena quickly. Jump, press CTRL and hold it to go straight into a SLIDE, then JUMP again, add a DASH into the mix. Chain your abilities to get around faster.

Try looking straight up, holding W, and dashing. Maybe jump then dash, you can get vertical very fast.

You can self-pass with shields and knock the ball around the arena, or off course from scoring a goal.

The best way to practice is in 100v1, go to Play > Training > 100 versus 1 and try to see how fast you can score 100 balls. At first just practice your shots and don't worry about timing.

Protoball is back!

Today on this Summer Solstice of 2025 (longest day of the year), we've updated the public build of Protoball on Steam!

Early Access v2 comes earlier than expected. We've been seeing some wild organic growth on Steam so we decided to give the people the current version of the remake of Protoball.

Community Game Night will return as well. This is a dedicated night each week where we host dedicated servers and the community plays together in the discord. It makes for some great times and you're all invited.

Players can also host their own Listen Servers (your performance is dependent on your network & PC) and play with their friends. We also have training modes for Free Play and 100v1 (Race against the clock to score 100 balls).

It's an early development build, the team is currently two die-hard developers dedicated to this game. It really is so much fun and if you get the hang of the controls, and the movement, and you get into a match with some friends or other testers we're sure that you'll see what makes it so magical.

A new Roadmap will soon follow.

Press Q for a quick Lob, Y to change FPP/TPP, and Right Click to initiate a curve abll, use WASD to choose curve direction, and Tap ALT to lock in your curve direction. Please do the tutorial, and then the 100v1 training.

Basic Private Lobbies are in!

When you click "Create Private Match" we'll spin up an private server, to join you'll need the lobby ID.

You'll need to note/type/copy your private lobby ID from the "Ready Up" screen and give it to your friends/scrimmage opponents.

A fully featured and easier to use system is coming soon, but you die hard try hard proto pros have been asking for this and you deserve it. The next tournament (Mid November) is going to have some serious prizes!

Also we know private is misspelled in this update, you try spelling at 3am with no coffee! ;) We'll get our English together soonTM...

Quick server fix and some colors & light updates

Fixed a bug that caused a server to bug out, and did some optimization passes on orbital & championship arena. More optimizations are incoming. A big part of optimizations will be the NEW CHARACTERS THAT ARE ON THE WAY.

We've got some updates and surprises coming this month, so stay tuned, join the discord, and take it easy (except in the arena of course).
