Touhou Luna Nights, which saw its final update roll out on June 15th, has officially topped 100,000 downloads!

Hey, it's Naramura. It's been awhile.

For Japan, the console release date has been set and preorders for the package version have begun, but we're still in talks regarding what to do for regions outside of Japan.

This is due to the fact that this physical version release is a really huge thing for us, and we've decided that it would be nigh impossible for us to handle both Japan and non-Japan versions simultaneously on our own.

There are no Japanese indie publishers with their very own distribution line, and our domestic Japanese distributor, KONAMI (yeah, that KONAMI. That's right - La-Mulana is getting released by KONAMI.) is technically a separate company from KONAMI overseas.

So while I can't promise anything, if and when we do go for an overseas release, we hope to do something kinda special to commemorate it.


Anyways. The porting work that we ended up being fully involved in is almost totally finished.

Now, I'm going to start working on the production of rewards.

On a related note, today I'd like to ask for everyone's opinion on the t-shirts.



The staff t-shirts we wore when showing off the finished title at the 2018 Tokyo Game Show have undergone a renewal.

However, I don't think there will be any more opportunities for us to show off the game at events here in Japan. Therefore, we've only made several of these t-shirts.



This is the design we've been using ever since we started up the Kickstarter campaign.

There are several of these out in the wild here in Japan, mainly in the hands of super passionate fans and people who've helped us out a lot. I think we may have even given a couple to some indie devs from overseas as well.


I feel like this design - with Lumisa looking all bad-ass - is the way to go for the reward t-shirts. I dig this design. But I can't make up my mind on which design to go with.

Personally, I feel like the second one - the older design - is more symbolic of Kickstarter, but what do you think?

I guess the colors would be the same, but it also depends on the colors available at the t-shirt printing company we use.

As for text, should we stick "Kickstarter" or "LA-MULANA Project" or something like that on it, or something like "I'm a Backer!" in big, in-your-face text?

The year is coming to a close once again.
Oh yeah - we totally released La-Mulana 2 this year. I barely even know what's going on anymore.

Anyway, thanks so much to all the backers for all of your patience! Has everyone managed to clear the game already?
We haven't been putting up any of these updates for awhile now, as we've been super busy with all the game updates taking up our time up till now and most of our time now being taken up by porting work.
Even being built with Unity, unfortunately we can't simply just stick the game onto consoles as-is and expect it to function properly. We have to search out all the spots we need to optimize, and fix them up ourselves. If, during this process, we're able to lighten the game even further, we may add those changes into the PC version as well.

But the thing everyone is likely most interested in would be the rewards.
This is sort of our own problem, but I live in Japan. And most of our backers don't.
If we don't set everything up so that all of the rewards - of which there are a lot - can be mailed out at once, things would get extremely hairy. Sendable sizes alone are a big issue, and even if we wanted to, we wouldn't be able to do something like put together a super awesome artbook and mail it out to everyone.
So anyway, the rewards will all be sent out once they're all ready to go, which should hopefully be sometime around the time the console version is released.
For now, I'm gonna continue doing my part and working on what I can.

This year was marked largely by our desperate and frenzied efforts to get the game out, but next year you'll be able to play the game on consoles. Next year is the real big show for La-Mulana 2.

Last week, I totally forgot to write the thing I wanted to write most.
As you know, La-Mulana 2 is not exactly kind to its users - not even to backers.
Some of the rewards consisted of messages on dead bodies and murals and stuff like that. Have you found them yet?

For the dead bodies, we placed them as close to the requested locations as possible.
You can get the backer names to display by loading the "Race Scanner" app.

The murals are spread all over the place.
But that purple fuzzy thing that pops up during events was made using everyone's faces as assets.

Of course it's not done, we still need to have lots of adjustments and bug-fixes, but honestly, we're burned out.

It's impossible to be "satisfied" in game creation.
No matter how much time you out into it, you end up thinking, "But it could be even better..."
I'm worried about some data that was created way back when.
But it's almost time for release.

Over ten years have passed since we started NIGORO.
Observing the speed at which both the internet and the original La-Mulana spread, I thought, "I may be able to do this professionally."
That was followed by hardship after hardship.
While the game was well-liked, sales were passable at best, and "indies" weren't really even a thing in Japan yet.
We had to find a way to sell the game overseas.

The game has gradually become more well-known, but I can't shake the feeling that we're still just a step short of success in this regard.
I guess getting negative sometimes is just something that happens, I mean, it's been over five years since we've released anything new.
It's been so long that I've forgotten how to do a few things here and there, and I feel like a newbie again.

We at NIGORO live in Japan, work in Japan, and have worked hard to get more fans in Japan.
We've participated in streams of gameplay, spoken at events, requested test plays, stuff like that.
We'd meet and hang out with people who have become fans of ours, and in exchange they'd support us and our work as NIGORO even more.

I feel like we should be doing the same thing overseas.
While there may not be many, just where exactly are the kind of people who would be fans of games like La-Mulana?
For starters, right here, of course: the people who have invested in and backed this project, and who come here to comment, and who have been waiting patiently for us this whole time.
I'm sure that you guys likely have friends who like the same kinds of games as you.
So I'd like to make this request: Please help get the word out about La-Mulana 2 in your own respective countries!

I wanna try wasting a bunch of time and just sleeping for an entire day.

Or rather, I've BEEN wanting to do that, but have been sucking it up and sticking it out for days while we push through the final work on La-Mulana 2.
As we close in on completion, we've been really kicking it into high gear and have been receiving reports from our debuggers at a pace of about one every 30 minutes or so, so I really want to just shut my PC down and take a nap.
And while our localization team is busy sending over reports of missing text and whatnot, I wanna go off on a trip somewhere and chill.

Anyway, right now we're at our absolute busiest. I think I'm gonna find some time in between handling bugs and stuff to stick some more traps into the game.
You know, just go ahead and take out some of my pain and frustration on the players.

As you can see in the image, the English implementation is coming along nicely.
The localizers are really doing a solid job, checking and rechecking game content, settings, various statuses, etc. etc. as they go along.
Unfortunately, I couldn't really tell you how good or bad any English text is, so check with someone who's played the English version to find out just how well it's been done.

Allow me to explain the LA-MULANA 2 release situation once more.

At the moment, the developers, localizers, testers, etc. - basically, "a whole mess of folks" - are all working on their respective parts, and everyone is busy going through multiple final checks.
Personally, there are some things about which I'm kinda like, "Seriously? We're dealing with that THIS far into development?!", but what are you gonna do? Stuff like this is par for the course for small development teams.

We've been working on this title for a long time now, and it's so big and complicated that I wish I could just keep going in and fixing and tweaking things forever.
But that's not an actual thing you can do, so for now we've got to get this thing finished so we can release it.
First off, we've made it to the point where the full game can be played to the end and cleared. We'll probably end up adding and implementing the hidden elements via post-release update.
We haven't actually announced anything yet, but it goes without saying that we're taking console releases into consideration as well. We plan to use the time between now and any future ports and releases to rock out some updates and further brush up the game.

We worked as hard as we could, but this is a really large-scale and complicated game.
I'm sure that people will discover ways to play, shortcuts, and bugs that we wouldn't have even imagined.
Once the game is released, we'll spend the foreseeable future locked and loaded, ready to take out any possible threat to gameplay that may arise as quickly as possible.

With the upcoming release of La-Mulana 2, the Playism Page for the game will stop taking pre-orders from Friday 13th July onwards.

La-Mulana 2 on Playism

This has nothing to do with game progression, but we're going to be creating different costumes for Lumisa.
One of the problems with this is that we can't actually create them until the main character's movements and animations have been fully finalized (since having to make just one adjustment means having to fix every single costume), and so now we're finally about ready to start working on them.

Those of you who have received costume keys as rewards will be receiving a file separate from the game from which you can obtain the keys.
Once the keys are applied to the game, you'll see a number representing the number of keys you have at the bottom-right side of the title screen.
These keys will allow you to open up costume treasure chests in the game and add the costumes to your inventory.

Players who have not received costume keys as rewards will have to acquire them by fulfilling certain conditions in the game.
Also, adding reward costume keys will only work on the PC version.
We unfortunately don't have a way to add this feature to consoles...

The merit of getting costume keys as rewards is that you'll be able to obtain said costumes before everyone else.
But either way, the costumes are hidden inside the ruins, so you won't be able to get your hands on them right away anyway.

As of today, we've finally finished off all of the enemy character graphics.
The images are all finished, so now all we have to do is check the movements, attacks, and animations of the final products.
Then we'll be able to check placement, terrain, and strength in the time leading up to release.

Even after spending all this time on development, there are still plenty of things we'd like to tweak and brush up, but there is also good a number of areas for which specs have been cut back as well.
But even so, we continue to stick with our initial desire to ensure that players will be surprised by something or other each time they play La-Mulana 2.
We've made it so that you just can't see and experience everything with just a single playthrough (and we don't mean simply "you have to play it on Hard Mode, too").

Issues noticed while having people play the first part of the game at BitSummit; additional traps, as it didn’t feel like there were enough; parts of the animation that felt somewhat lacking; balancing of enemy characters; balancing of items/money; etc.

Setting aside some as-yet incomplete resources, we’re beginning testing and fixes for the almost-finished product.

At BitSummit, players were able to play from where the game starts off, above ground. The various signs contain the required text, and villagers can be seen walking around.

Game Freezing Issue

We got a bug report a little while ago from a very special user about La-Mulana freezing in certain battles. This was something that we had been aware of for a while, but hadn't been able to figure out how to solve it.
But the recent bug report went into such detail that we were able to finally locate and solve the problem.

So, La-Mulana Ver.1.6.6.x is released today.





Mac / Linux Beta Update

Mac and Linux users, we have updated the beta version (tester - for Testers) with new builds for Mac and Linux. This should be solving all the bugs that had been reported.
We would love for you to all test it out, and then let us know of any new bugs here or if everything is now perfect!
Once everything is all ok, we can release these builds to the default version.

Story
Rosenkreuzstilette is an action-platformer game in which you step into the shoes of Spiritia Rosenberg, a virtuous young woman caught on the wrong side of a revolution instigated by her closest friends. Each of the game's seventeen stages is filled with treacherous terrain and swarms of enemies ready to make quick work of our plucky young heroine. Guide Spiritia safely to the boss at the end of each stage and use all of the abilities at your disposal to knock some sense into them.

Hey everyone,

For those of you who are used to getting your La-Mulana 2 updates via forum, we have some bad news. There was an unrecoverable crash at the server farm where the forum was hosted, and the site is down, along with several hundred other domains across the world. There was no warning, and our webmaster is having a very hard time communicating with those in charge on what we can do next.
The good news, though, is that we have a backup of the forum itself, and, once we get up and running, we'll be able to restore most of the Kickstarter updates, along with the latest from NIGORO. Sadly, any threads that were going on between users (discussions of any kind) may be lost like tears in rain.

We'll be back soon. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
