Community Update #5: Behind the curtain

Hi everyone, my name is Jon Higgins, Marketing & Communications Director at New World Interactive. Todays community update is going to be slightly different from our usual development oriented blogs and instead focus more on some of the things that have been going on behind the scenes here at New World. We hope you enjoy this peek behind the curtain and brief company update.

As some of you may have read a while back we announced we would be creating a new studio called New World North in Calgary, Canada. After a few small delays we are now set up and slowly migrating staff from around the world to the city, which is quickly becoming Canada's newest game development hub.

Our new location in Calgary enables us to pursue our longer term company vision of having a sustainable, enjoyable, best-in-class work environment for our team. It represents our new home as we look to centralize a formerly distributed team and grow with more experienced talent. These changes will allow us to continue pursuing our goal of creating critically-acclaimed, cutting edge and highly successful video game experiences.

Founder & CEO Jeremy Blum at the New World North Office.

There is still a fair bit of work to be done on the new office, however it is a significant upgrade from our old space in Amsterdam, and provides a lot more flexibility for our company to grow.

Our old space in Amsterdam, packed down ft. character artist Gabriel Fronza.

In addition to our new space we are also welcoming a few new faces to our team and hiring for several new positions. Recently we announced the hiring of former BioWare Lead Artist Michael Grills who joins us as our new Art Director, as well as ex-Tencent, Ubisoft, and Epic employee Derek Czerkaski who will be joining us as our new Head of Production.

Derek is an extraordinary talent in the gaming industry. We are delighted to add him to our team and confident he will help New World continue building our best-in-class studio. - Keith Warner, President

Some of you may have picked up on a quote from our recent press release regarding the hiring of ex BioWare artist Michael Grills:

Were taking on a new, unannounced project which requires stronger artistic vision and leadership than games weve worked on in the past. Michael is a great fit for what we have in mind, bringing lots of creativity, industry experience and strong leadership to the table. Were looking forward to having him on board and are very excited to see what hes able to help us accomplish in the future for this project and beyond. Jeremy Blum, Founder & CEO

While our development team currently remains focused on post-release support and the console version of Insurgency: Sandstorm, we are also laying the foundation for exciting new projects. Insurgency: Sandstorms success has allowed the company to not only continue to support the game, but also expand and explore new frontiers.

A while back Nick Calandra and Omar Ahmed from Gameumentary visited our offices in Amsterdam and Denver to tell the story behind the formation of New World Interactive and our journey from enthusiast modders to award-winning indie developers.

Initially planned as a one off, the documentary crew captured so much footage with our team that it will now be premiering as a three-part story over on the Escapist YouTube channel and website later in the summer.

Our team have just seen a first draft of the episodes and we feel it will give a very stripped back and raw look at everything from the ups and downs of starting an independent video game company in 2010 all the way up to Insurgency: Sandstorms release. From our failed kickstarter and almost going bankrupt, to making our first million, the series touches on all aspects of our company, including an exclusive look at an unreleased game concept that, while discontinued, also laid the foundation for Insurgency: Sandstorm

Well be returning to more developer focused community updates, including a preview of our upcoming snow map. However if you want more frequent updates be sure to follow us on social media @InsurgencyGame on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram or join the /r/Insurgency subreddit. Below is some of the content we have teased over on these channels.

Hi everyone,

We are excited to announce that the second Pre-Order Beta of Insurgency: Sandstorm is now open!

You can jump into the Beta and play right now by pre-ordering the game on Steam at a 10% discount. Owners of the original Insurgency, which now boasts a player population of over five million, will receive an additional 10% loyalty discount, available through the end of the year.

Thanks to all the positive feedback Insurgency: Sandstorm received during the first Pre-order Beta earlier this month, the team will be using your feedback to continue to polish and optimize the game up until launch and beyond. We are now happy to let players experience the the intensity of modern combat in this Pre-order Beta phase.

Beta 2 is still a development build of the game and an on-going work in progress. We use betas as an important tool for gathering player feedback, studying system performance, and balancing the game. As such, it is important to stress that this is not a representation of the release version of Insurgency: Sandstorm.

As you can see in the Pre-Order Beta 2 changelog, the team has worked hard on this new version, but you may encounter, bugs, balance and/or performance issues. We encourage all participants to use the and forums to report any issues so that our team can continue working on them for the release.

Before playing, please check out:

Join us to celebrate the Beta 2 launch with a Dev Q&A and giveaway at 18h00 (CEST) on www.twitch.tv/focushomeinteractive

There are no NDAs or streaming restrictions on this test, and we're greatly looking forward to getting feedback from all across the gaming community as we work on the launch build. Pre-Order Beta 2 will stay open until the release of the game, September 18th.

Insurgency: Sandstorm releases on Windows PC in September 18, with Linux and Mac support coming later, and on PS4 and Xbox One in 2019.

Insurgency Sandstorm Community Update and Release Date

Hey everyone, this is Michael Tsarouhas, I am the lead game designer on Insurgency: Sandstorm. I wanted to take some time to give you all an update on Sandstorm’s development, share some juicy new content, and announce our release dates. If you’d like to get up to speed on our last announcement earlier this year, please see here.

We’ll get right to it. Insurgency: Sandstorm will officially launch for Windows PC in September 2018 on Steam for $29.99. Pre-ordering will get you a 10% discount, and for those who already own Insurgency there will be an additional loyalty discount of 10%, adding up to a total of 20% off. We aren’t sharing a specific release date just yet, but will announce it in due time.

We’ll be accepting pre-orders for Insurgency: Sandstorm on Steam very soon. In addition to the discounts being offered, pre-ordering will get you access to a beta version before release. This beta will be the full game, but will likely still have some bugs and issues to be resolved. We look forward to getting our community’s help in reporting and addressing these remaining issues, as well as receiving any general feedback, as we approach release. This community feedback has always been a big part of the development process in any of our games, so we’re excited at the opportunity to have a beta like this. Details on when the beta will start will be available at a later date.

Sandstorm’s release for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One has unfortunately needed to be pushed back. We’re currently planning for a console launch sometime in the first half of 2019. Our original goal was to release both console and Windows PC versions side by side in 2018, but we feel we need more time to polish the console experience. It’s important that we ensure we deliver an overall solid experience that is as bug free and stable as possible regardless of platform. Rest assured we still have every intention to expand our community to console, it’s just going to need to take a little more time. We know this may be disappointing news to some of you. We’ve been shown a lot of love (especially recently) from console players who are hankering for a kind of hardcore gameplay like the one we provide. We want our new console audience to have a great first impression, and feel strongly that the extra time will better allow us to accomplish this.

Let’s talk a little bit about our content and what’s new. We’ll be releasing in September with the following game modes: Push, Firefight, and Capture the Base for Versus, as well as Checkpoint for Coop. Operation and Outpost were mentioned in our last blog post; Outpost being a legacy mode of Insurgency and Operation being something more experimental. These won’t be included for release and will be considered for post-release content instead. We’ve found they’ll need some more attention than we originally planned, and we still need to determine if they have a place in our experience. As we mentioned in the last community update, we want to make sure every game mode is tight, unique, and fun, and that we don’t split our playerbase too much with too many. Checkpoint mode is shaping up really nicely, and has some pretty sweet improvements since Insurgency. We can’t give specifics just yet, but you’ll be seeing them soon enough.

Similar to Insurgency, we plan to support Insurgency: Sandstorm with free content updates post-release. We will continually expand the game with new weapons, upgrades, maps, and other content. Modding support is something we are committed to providing. We want to work with our modding community to give them the tools they need to create exciting new content beyond what the official experience offers. This includes Steam Workshop integration, custom map tools, game rule adjustments (similar to Insurgency’s theater system), and things of that nature.

We’ve added a ton of content since our last update in January. Release will have roughly 40 weapons and about 40 upgrades available for many of those weapons. While some of these weapons will be familiar for fans of Insurgency, many are new. Fire support has been further fleshed out and runs the gamut from jet airstrikes (BRRRT), explosive artillery, chemical mortars, explosive suicide drones, and helicopters who will swoop in and attack with rockets, miniguns, and autocannons. When coordinated effectively by a team’s Commander and Observer player classes, one of these fire support options can spark a pretty wicked comeback or solidify the strength of a push. We’re also working on our character customization system which will include hundreds of different cosmetic items as well as several voice options. We have included over 6500 lines of unique character dialogue including local Arab fighters (for both Security and Insurgent teams), American special operations soldiers, fire support coordinators, and air support pilots. We currently have no plans to include Steam Marketplace support, item trading, or a loot crate system. All these items, in addition to not affecting gameplay, will be a totally optional secondary aspect to the game. They will be unlocked by progressing through ranks and by using an ingame currency system with a direct buy option for most items.

Alright, let’s show off some screenshots. Unreal Engine 4 has just been awesome to work with. Epic have been great partners and we’ve been able to bring Sandstorm’s maps up to a level of visual quality and overall size unprecedented to what we could achieve before.

We’ve certainly come a long way in engine technology, huh? Unreal’s 20th birthday was just last week, and we are happy to be working with the tools that follow in its legacy.

Oh yeah, and we’re working on dismemberment too. This is still a pretty heavy work in progress.

Be sure to follow our social media for more info as things develop. We’re going to be at E3 in Los Angeles letting people play the game in the West Hall #4512 at the Focus Home Interactive booth. Please feel free to come find us and say hi. All of us on our team and at Focus are still very excited to show all of you Insurgency: Sandstorm, and we can’t wait to put it in your hands. Stay tuned and stick with us. It’s really not much longer now.

Best,
Mikee

Watch Insurgency: Sandstorm's Teaser Trailer!

Taking the original Insurgency formula and evolving it, Insurgency: Sandstorm is built in Unreal Engine 4 with upgraded graphics, taking the series into a new era.

Insurgency: Sandstorm brings extended gameplay possibilities, improved immersion, and new co-op and versus objective-based game modes. All while retaining the lethal tactical action that made Insurgency the worldwide phenomenon it is today.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avJ50YRup0o
The brand new teaser trailer follows a wounded fighter as he stumbles through an assault while images of combat flash through his head.

Fight across a modern battlefield utilizing gameplay mechanics that blur the lines between reality and shooter - split second decisions will mean life or death for you and your team.

Each weapon has unique ballistic calculations that take into account things like bullet drop and penetration power. Choose to drop magazines for faster reloads in dangerous situations, carefully open doors to keep quiet, or bash doors down with a shoulder charge, and much more.

Participate in large-scale battles in up to 16-versus-16 skirmishes with artillery barrages, helicopter gunships, repurposed commercial drones, air strikes, and drivable land transport vehicles.

Battle across expansive maps with interiors to breach and high-value objectives to control with your team. Each map’s size and play areas are adjusted specifically for each game mode and can also be played in co-op against bots.

Like its predecessor, Insurgency: Sandstorm rewards teamwork and objective play over personal success. Players will also finally see long awaited features such as character customization, ranked matchmaking, and many more.

Insurgency: Sandstorm is coming out later this year. Stay tuned for more information.

Insurgency: Sandstorm Community Update

Hey everyone, my name is Michael Tsarouhas. I am the lead game designer on Insurgency: Sandstorm, and I want to give you all an update on what we’re up to here at New World. We’ve been quiet for a while about Sandstorm, I know. We’ve been chugging away and working on things in relative secrecy. But now it’s time to get a little more talkative.

We’ll need to start with some sobering news. Our creative director Andrew Spearin has left New World to pursue other opportunities. Andrew has been with us since the very beginning, co-concepting Insurgency: Modern Infantry Combat with our CEO Jeremy Blum. Released in 2007, the mod won ModDB’s Mod of the Year award. It was the inception of our signature gameplay and style of FPS that our team continues to develop. A love for this kind of multiplayer experience led to the commercial release of a full standalone Insurgency game in 2014, our WWII FPS Day of Infamy in 2017, and our current project Insurgency: Sandstorm. Andrew has been a mentor and a friend to me personally, providing guidance when I began full time with the team as community manager. The whole team deeply appreciates his time and contributions to our projects, and we wish him only the best.

Let’s talk a little bit about Sandstorm, and why I’m writing this announcement. Some of you might know me as Mikee ingame or by one of my former roles. On Insurgency I wrote and voiced just about all the game’s voice over, worked as the team’s community manager, and also hosted our weekly official livestreams. On our next title Day of Infamy I maintained some of those community duties, but primarily took on a new role of casting, directing, and writing for the many talented actors we brought onto the project. I have the great pleasure now to be the lead game designer on Insurgency: Sandstorm. This means that I will be working with the team to direct and oversee the design process as well as keep the development process cohesive. I still do writing, voice over, and community relations stuff (I love doing them) but now focus primarily on design.

On a personal note I’d just like to say this new role is an extremely exciting opportunity for me. I’ve been passionate about the FPS genre for as long as I have played video games. I’ve always had the kind of taste in adversarial multiplayer games that hardcore ones like Insurgency and Day of Infamy satisfy. Before that, it was Rogue Spear, Delta Force, Ghost Recon 1, Day of Defeat, Counter-Strike, a ton of other Half-Life 1 mods (Firearms? Frontline Force? Desert Crisis? Global Warfare? Ringing anyone’s bells?) and countless others. I never thought recording for Insurgency, screaming into a microphone “RPG HEADS DOWN!” at the top of my lungs in the closet where the Christmas tree used to be, would ever bring me to this point. But it has. I’m excited to take this on with one of the best groups of people I’ve ever worked with, and one of the best communities I’ve ever played with too. We have hope deep in our hearts that what we create will be an experience that you all enjoy, and be one that you stay up too late into the night playing. I mean it.

As a team we have decided to make some shifts in the direction of Insurgency: Sandstorm. To start, the single player and cooperative story has been canceled for release, and will be considered again at a later date. This is due to its high production requirements and our commitment to deliver to our fans in 2018. The story was a very exciting and new opportunity for us as a team, but we felt we had to make a choice. At this moment it’s more important to us that we deliver a full multiplayer and coop experience that improves on Insurgency; one that is true to our style and what we feel we do best. We know to some of you this decision may be unexpected, and we’re sad to share this news, but this was a shift our team felt we needed to make.

The setting of Insurgency: Sandstorm has been developed further. Though we initially wanted to portray particular contemporary real world conflicts, we actually found this approach restrictive of our design and, admittedly, sensitive. Instead, our conflict is fictionalized, but draws inspiration from various modern real world insurgencies. This is in regards to environment, gameplay, characters, vehicles, equipment, weapons, etc. It’s inspiration that is mostly aesthetic and not tied down by any one region. Having this approach allows us to focus our resources on creating a fun and atmospheric hardcore multiplayer experience. It also provides robust options for character customization, post-release level content, community modding, and other aspects.

At this point we can confirm a little more content and what you can expect in Sandstorm. The planned game modes for release are as follows: Push, Firefight, and Capture the Base for Versus, plus Checkpoint, Operation, and Outpost for Coop. Push and Firefight are very similar to as they were in Insurgency. Both of these modes will not have drivable vehicles, as we hope to preserve the gameplay of our legacy game modes. Capture the Base however is a more open map mode, one which is built from the start with drivable vehicles in mind. It’s got a bit more of a “Capture the Flag” feel to it (though with very different goals and conditions) and so far has been a lot of fun to play internally. Firefight will also feature a separate 5v5 competitive ruleset with its own matchmaking and ranking system. Checkpoint and Outpost are similar to Insurgency as well (Outpost has seen some tweaks) but Operation will offer a new kind of experience. We’ll be sharing more about that in due time.

Adding game modes post-release is something we are considering. However it is important to us that we do not fragment or separate our player base with too many modes, and that each of our modes offers a very fun and distinct experience. Game mode excess is something we were a bit guilty of in Insurgency and Day of Infamy. Some of the modes felt a little weak or just weren’t played much. This time around, we are more focused, and in the future we can always expand into new game modes if we feel they’re appropriate. As far as platforms go, we’ve decided to delay Mac and Linux support for post-release. We’re finding our time will be best spent on developing for Windows, Xbox One, and PS4. Our priority is to make those three platforms fully functional first, then expand after release.

Fire Support, as many of you know it from Day of Infamy, will be making a return in Insurgency: Sandstorm with some improvements. It was too damn cool to not do it. For those unfamiliar, this was the ability for two special player classes to come together and call for air or artillery support at a specific location on the map. It is not a killstreak-driven or point-driven ability; it is a teamwork-driven ability. Fire Support will be balanced appropriately for different modes, so don’t worry about seeing it in things like competitive Firefight (this is for you one-guy-on-Twitter). Expect to see some terrifyingly destructive hardware such as military helicopters, gas attacks, and even nefariously repurposed commercial drones. We’ll also be working on making Fire Support options smoother to select and use than they were in Day of Infamy.

The Closed Alpha for Windows PC is coming soon and sign ups are now available HERE. We can’t say exactly when it’s coming, but we really do mean soon, so fill out the form and keep your eyes peeled. We said our goal was to have it by the end of 2017, but we felt we’d do well with a little extra time to make sure everything is ready. We have already, however, been doing limited “Pre-Alpha” testing with some members of our community to good effect. The Closed Alpha will be a stage of development where we select a higher volume of players who can get their hands on the game and help us further with playtesting and feedback. You can sign up now at the link above to be considered for participating. Be aware we’ll only be taking in a select amount of people, likely in multiple waves. But don’t fret if you aren’t accepted. We plan on eventually doing a beta, and will announce more details on that when the time comes. We view the Sandstorm Closed Alpha as we viewed our Early Access stages of Insurgency and Day of Infamy: the game is definitely not finished, but it’s in a state where we’re ready for feedback from players. There will be a heavy and steady amount of iteration based on this feedback and our own plans as we work to improve the game for release in 2018.

Apply for the Insurgency Sandstorm Closed Alpha

Alright but enough foreplay, let’s get to some content:

Here we can see Security team members leaving their spawn area during one of our playtests on the current Pre-Alpha build. The characters you see are just the first implementation. Ultimately, characters will be more diverse and fleshed out. We are currently working on a system of character customization more granular than Day of Infamy which allows both Security and Insurgent teams to change out different clothing and gear items by slot on the body. The picture above would be just one combination of cosmetic choices. We also intend to have ammunition amount and armor type be physically represented as was in Insurgency.

Here’s a Fire Support option in action during a playtest. Helicopter gunships are pretty OP in real life, but don’t worry, we’ll be balancing appropriately with things like being able to shoot them down and cooldowns. You can also see our levels are a bit larger this time around, but they still maintain the core Insurgency gameplay.

Here’s an exterior shot of a night map. Pretty, right? Source has always been great for us on our previous projects, but Unreal 4 is really badass and allows us to do some awesome visual things.

This is an ingame screenshot taken during a recent Coop night map test. Keep in mind everything is a heavy work in progress, including that “Bravo Blocking” message which might be too large. We are planning to feature night maps again in Sandstorm, although with more of a focus on Coop play. In addition to some sweet visual effects we can achieve with Unreal 4, you can see in this screenshot a demonstration of our “Ammo Information” system in the bottom right-hand corner.

This UI element only appears when relevant. It shows a number of your total magazine count, including the one in the weapon. Beside this are visual representations of three of those magazines in a queue. Each magazine box is filled with grey and depletes as you shoot with it, but will never show the exact round count. The magazine with the horizontal white line above it is the magazine in your weapon. To its left is the next one from the queue to be loaded into the weapon, which is always the one with the highest amount of rounds in it as was in Insurgency. For those who haven’t seen it yet, we go into the specifics of the actual reloading process here, including a new Speed Reload ability. And don’t worry, we’re aware of the improper slide action after expending that one round in the chamber while magless.

Expect some new weapons. Our game is still a modern one, which means you’ll see a lot of familiar firearms from Insurgency that befit the theater. But there will still be some juicy new ones to shoot.

Vehicles have been a lot of fun so far in Capture the Base. When used correctly, they’re great both for getting places quickly and as a mobile weapon platform. We have the ability for both drivers and passengers to fire and use the sights of small weapons (pistols, SMG’s, short barreled assault rifles) while seated within the cabin of the vehicle. They can also lean out the window to shoot if they want to get a better view or use larger weapons. In addition to expanding on our gameplay, we’re excited to see what modders might eventually do with these vehicles we’re implementing.

Video game quality assurance and playtesting is not without amusement. If you test with us, you’re probably going to see some silly stuff. Be sure to screenshot it and share it with us on the appropriate channels. It’s all a part of the process, and it’s how things get fixed.

The Insurgency experience is one that is teamwork-oriented, kinetic, and lethal. Insurgency: Sandstorm is no exception. With the recent production decisions we’ve made, we hope to both ensure and improve upon our vision for this kind of experience. There have been many moments, even in our earliest testing, where we smile and shout to each other “That really felt like Insurgency” when someone gets blown away, pulls off a sick hero cap, or whatever. Some of our community Pre-Alpha testers have said the same. We are very driven to deliver an excellent FPS experience to all of you and to ourselves. One that stands unique from what the other studios are doing, especially the big ones. And we work literally every day in some capacity to achieve this. Literally. Not figuratively as that word is so often misconstrued. So imagine our excitement then, if you will, for one fateful release day where we finally get to share it with all of you. Stick around, and we’ll see you ingame.

Best,
Mikee

Insurgency Sandstorm E3 2017 Trailer Released!

Insurgency Sandstorm E3 2017 Trailer

Insurgency: Sandstorm is the sequel to multi-million selling Insurgency by developers New World Interactive.

Designed to retain what made Insurgency great, and build upon it, the FPS epic comes enhanced and expanded as a new game in Insurgency: Sandstorm, coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. It will come with the addition of a host of new modes and content to be revealed later, including a new Story Mode. This story is playable cooperatively as a squad of up to four players (two player split-screen) or alone, and is explored in the E3 Trailer.

In Insurgency: Sandstorm’s Story Mode, players will travel as a party cut off from support across a war-torn landscape on a new mission that is deeply personal.

The trailer is narrated by one of the main characters in the game, a U.S. Army veteran turned volunteer soldier, who finds himself on an unexpected journey alongside a female fighter native to the region and a few other characters yet to be introduced. Their objectives have aligned, and their vision of the war blurred as it touches each of them in different but converging ways.

Like Insurgency, the gameplay of Sandstorm rewards teamwork and objective-play over personal success. Players will see new features such as drivable light vehicles, character customization, unlockable cosmetic items, fire support requests, ranked matchmaking, and more.

Insurgency: Sandstorm will release on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Insurgency Patch February 22

We are releasing a patch today to address some issues with the game. We have removed the Compete section as it requires maintenance and resources that we have allocated elsewhere. When we launched the Compete section of Insurgency, our intent was to continue iteration on the system and game design of what ‘Competitive’ could be. However, as we outlined in a recent blog post, our priorities have shifted. As a testing grounds, the experiment was successful as we have learned lessons that are influencing how we design and implement features, such as stats and rankings, into our games. Thank you to the competitive players that offered their feedback and time with the system.

Full changelist below:

Gameplay Improvements

  • Bipod can now be toggled during the transition to prone or while the weapon is being drawn.
  • Bipod is no longer retracted when crawling.
  • Added drop shadow to chat text.
  • overview_alpha cvar now affects the transparency of spawn zones and restricted areas. Added overview_bounds_alpha that can control the transparency of these elements independently.
Fixes
  • Fixed some issues with gamemodes (Skirmish and Occupy) where round-specific state wasn’t being reset correctly leading to some gameplay issues.
  • Fixed VIP not showing the correct icon in Ambush.
  • Updated ragdoll collision settings and fixed ragdolls occasionally jumping on death.
  • Fixed firemode saving not working between sessions.
  • Fixed stats system.
  • Updated translation files.
  • Crash handler will no longer submit crash dumps for previous versions of the game.
  • Removed cvar sv_nwi_banlist in favor of game bans.
  • Fixed issue where a player spectating could not click on living players to spectate them.
  • Fixed a rare issue where player would randomly disconnect after joining a server and after map change.

  • Re-added Kandagal Ambush, Heights Ambush, Sinjar Ambush and District Ambush that had been previously removed from the tactical playlist.
Modding
  • HLMV now includes a material parameter editor and new 3-point lighting setup.
  • Fixed issue with CVEngineServer::ChangeLevel in SourceMod.
  • Unrestricted the maximum value of mp_coop_lobbysize. The game will use the squad size to determine the maximum number of players if mp_coop_lobbysize is set higher.
Thanks, and enjoy!

Insurgency Patch Changelist October 5, 2016

We are releasing a patch for Insurgency today that features all new Ambush scenarios, work in progress penetration-based armor, updated character models with equipment representation, competitive changes, and more.

All New Ambush Scenarios

We’ve changed the game rules as well as many layouts for Ambush, the goal being to revive the mode by making it more fun and competitive. The mode now always has a single extraction point, which changes each round. The added and updated scenarios have been added to the official tactical and competitive playlists. Please give us your feedback on the new layouts via our forums, and let us know what you think.

Work in Progress Penetration-Based Armor

We are currently working on penetration-based armor, which has now been introduced to cooperative and competitive modes in the game. When this is enabled, visible armor on characters function like real armor, instead of simply adding extra health points to the character’s chest/stomach area.

When we’ve received enough feedback and have had time to balance the damage model properly, we will introduce the feature to regular multiplayer. In the meantime, modders may enable the penetration based armor via theater files, and it may be tested on the cooperative and competitive playlists.

Updated Characters with Equipment Representation

Top to bottom: Heavy Armor, Light Armor, No Armor
Left to right: No Vest, Chest Rig, Chest Carrier

We have updated the player models in Insurgency so each character visually represents the armor and vest (or lack thereof) he is wearing. They have also been changed and improved visually, in particular the Insurgents and Security VIP. These character changes were necessary to pave the way for penetration-based armor.

Workshop creators please take note, these changes will break any mods with player model replacements. It will not break player retexture mods, however their clothing/look will be shifted around. The Security No Armor model will show up as a vanilla skin because of our changes.

Competitive Changes

We’ve updated the competitive playlist to include the new Ambush mode with all new layouts and implement an all new supply gain economy accompanied with new equipment loadouts and class templates. As rounds progress, players will earn supply, allowing them to use new weapons they might not have had access to at the beginning of the match. Supply is gained each time you capture an objective, or get 5 kills/assists.

The new work in progress penetration based armor is also now included in competitive to give greater value to armor and a proper purpose to AP/HP rounds. Once you try it out, don’t hesitate to share your thoughts on how well you feel it works via our forums.

We are currently in the process of setting up anti cheat for the game. It will run for all of the game in comp, PvP, and coop. This is not yet ready to be implemented into the main game experience, but it is something we are currently testing among other things on our beta branch. If you would like to join our developer beta tests, be sure to join our the community group here to get an event notification when we have tests.

Full changelist is below:

Gameplay Improvements

  • Updated Player models.
  • Players models are now visually representative of their armor and gear choices.
  • New work in progress Competitive theater which includes penetration-based armor and supply economy.
  • Updated third person crouch leaning animations and crouch idle positions to line up better with where the first person camera is.
  • Raised Ambush player count needed for 2 active control points to 16 players.
  • When Ambush is in single control point mode, the game will now alternate between the two points rather than randomizing it.
  • New Ambush mode map layouts.

Fixes

  • Fixed score reset when mp_restartround is run on the server.
  • Fixed props disappearing in Verticality when shader settings are set to Very High.
  • Fixed SourceTV being unable to join full coop games.

Map Changes

  • Fixed a restricted area that allowed spawn camping in Buhriz Push.
  • Fixed a restricted area in District Push.
  • Fixed an invisible wall in Dry Canal.
  • Fixed miscellaneous issues in various maps.

Have fun, enjoy! ːsecurityː

Day of Infamy Patch - July 29th

Today we release our first patch for Day of Infamy, based upon some of the initial feedback we received and major issues we noticed.

We would like to point out that the singleplayer missions have been improved in this patch, but they still have a way to go. We will be spending considerable time improving this experience leading up to the full release.

Below is the full list of changes for today’s patch:

User Experience Improvements

  • Adjusted difficulties in the game. Now there are only two, and they have been renamed:

    • Classic - Gameplay representing the classic WWII games - death notices, friendly fire disabled.
    • Grit - New World’s rendition of more intense and suspenseful gameplay - no death indication, and friendly fire enabled.

  • Added random gameplay hints to the loading screen.
  • User interface adjustments:

    • US Army icon updated.
    • Game mode added to server info.
    • Brightened server list text to increase legibility.
    • Images added to rule set filter in server browser.

    Gameplay Improvements
  • Radio operators will receive assist points for artillery kills.
  • Adjusted bot counts (both friendly and enemy) in cooperative and singleplayer.
  • Added “possession” feature for singleplayer, so that instead of losing when you die, you take over a nearby friendly soldier. You will lose only if your whole squad is wiped out.
  • Friendly bots no longer respawn constantly in coop/single player, unless specified in a map objective. Now they default to spawning when humans spawn (objective/regroup based).
  • Regrouping added as the method of reinforcement in singleplayer Entrenchment.

    Bug Fixes
  • Fixed crash when selecting “Setup Microphone”.
  • Fixed crash when change level was called without a gamemode.
  • Fixed not being able to join coop servers due to too many bots.
  • Fixed being able to call in artillery with your own radio if you switched to officer during gameplay.
  • Adjusted rounds per minute values on semi-automatics to prevent macro abuse.
  • Fixed equipping the flamethrower as a US Army engineer. This was caused by the fuel tank weight not being taken into account properly.
  • Fixed assist points being assigned to the wrong player.
  • Fixed artillery kills on kill feed enabled servers showing as the weapon you have out.
  • Fixed “rifle grenade” selection not being removed from your inventory when you dropped a weapon equipped with rifle grenades.
  • Disabled tree sway for swamp trees in Reichswald.
  • Fixed bots occasionally spawning in the prone position.

    Performance/Stability Improvements
  • Reduced bot counts in singleplayer to improve performance.
  • Fixed server-side crash when trying to transition to a map without the gamemode being defined.
  • Potential crash fix related to camera animations.

Day of Infamy mod update May 26, 2016

The Day of Infamy mod has been updated on Workshop with five new community-made maps added to the official map rotation, and new content including a shotgun and updated weapon assets.

    New Multiplayer and Coop Maps

    New Coop Maps

    Features

    • New M1912 pump action shotgun for American Assault and Demolition classes.

    • New Kar98k rifle, scope and bayonet assets.

    • New Bazooka assets.

    • New first person Luger pistol animations.

    • The MP40 now uses a unique model so any Workshop mods that replace the one in Insurgency will not replace the one in DoI.

    • Fixed textures and shaders on the Luger pistol.

    • Fixed being able to skip the MG42 and M1919 reloads.

Insurgency update changelist May 26, 2016

We have released an update that includes a new map and numerous features, fixes and improvements. The new map is called Dry Canal, originally created by community member Tribly and a finalist in our Gamebanana level design contest last year.

We are also releasing the foundation for our competitive ranking system. The system is not fully functional yet, but the game now loads the web-based system that will evolve into the competitive component. We can begin to update our competitive and stats systems without requiring a game update.

We know our competitive community are anxiously awaiting the competitive matchmaking features, and we appreciate everyone’s patience. You can expect to see ingame progress in the near future, and if you want a preview of our competitive features, we will be creating a Competitive Testing group on Steam which will give you early access to features before they are introduced to everyone else. We will use this group to test the systems on a smaller base of users and solicit feedback.

In addition to the update to Insurgency, the Day of Infamy mod has also been updated on Workshop. Five new community-made maps have been added to the official map rotation for the mod, and some new content has also been added including a new weapon and new weapon assets. Full changelist found here.

    http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=601757902

Important note regarding custom player models: Because of animation changes made in this patch, any Workshop custom player models now will cause the game to crash because they do not have the correct IK settings compiled. Please unsubscribe and notify the Workshop creator that their models must be updated.

    Full changelist is below:

    New Maps

    • Dry Canal (Day and Night versions)

    New Scenarios

    • Multiplayer

      • Dry Canal Push

      • Dry Canal Skirmish

      • Dry Canal Occupy

      • Dry Canal Firefight

      • Dry Canal Strike

      • Dry Canal Elimination

      • Dry Canal Ambush

    • Cooperative

      • Contact Checkpoint

      • Dry Canal Checkpoint

      • Dry Canal Conquer

      • Dry Canal Outpost

      • Dry Canal Survival

      • Dry Canal Hunt

    Features

    • Implemented facial animations for your guide in the training level.

    • Created Clean Sweep achievements for every map running Hunt game mode.

    • Created Decisive Victory achievements for every map running Checkpoint game mode.

    • New first person AK-74, AKS-74u and Makarov animations.

    • New third person animations for reloads, grenade throws and foregrips.

    • M16, M4 and AK-74 world models have been updated with moving bolts.

    • IK support for third person hands and feet. Mod authors will need to update any player model mods they have on the workshop.

    • Steam View Game Info dialog now shows the player score rather than kill count. Player score can be hidden on the View Game Info dialog if server enables sv_suppress_steam_score.

    • Damage and suppression is replicated to spectators watching in first person.

    Optimizations

    • Player spawn staggering implemented to reduce server lag spikes that occurred when a large amount of players spawn at once.

    Gameplay Improvements

    • Survival improvements

      • Adjusted price and amount of ammo received from chest rig and chest carrier to make ammo more limited.

      • Tweaked AI behavior so bots are less likely to patrol parts of the map humans can avoid.

      • Added win condition for level 100

    Fixes

    • Players now get correctly damaged and flashed by grenades while leaning around a corner.

    • Fixed the black sky issue when Shader Details were set to medium or low settings.

    • Fixed the subtitles not working in the training level.

    • Fixed the clean sweep hunt achievements not triggering properly.

    • Possessing a bot no longer reloads when using a controller.

    • Fixed being able to crash servers by spamming the inventory_resupply command.

    • Fixed FPS drop caused by main menu HTML panels after connecting to a server.

    • Character models are now positioned with their head where the first person view is in crouched and standing stances, which should help prevent “head glitching”.

    • Fixed multiple world model bipods attaching to a weapon.

    • Fixed detached foregrip on shotgun world models.

    • Added IK support to first person hands on various weapons to prevent any sliding during transitions, specifically pistols.

    • Fixed being able to skip the M249 reloads.

    • Players now experience fall damage when landing in shallow water.

    • SourceTV demos can now be viewed without crashing the client. Demos recorded prior to this patch may fail to load.

    • When viewing a player in first person through SourceTV, proning and leaning is now shown correctly.

    • sv_hud_deathmessages can now be enabled on co-op servers.

    Map Changes

    • New District checkpoint layout

    • Fixed an issue in Embassy where you could jump behind the map.

    • Added invisible walls in Panj to prevent players from accessing certain exploit locations.

    • Fixed a bug in Siege Outpost where cache B would be in a bad location.

    • Fixed many other miscellaneous issues in multiple levels.

    User Experience Improvements

    • Pressing escape now closes menus properly.

    • HTML MOTDs have been disabled due to player feedback. Unfortunately, too many servers were abusing this ability by playing ads that could not be stopped or were obnoxious.

    Modding

    • Server-side Workshop now supports collections.

    • Workshop servers will now correctly query for map updates between games.

    • Spawn points and spawn zone entities can now be assigned a squad ID, allowing mappers to create squad specific spawn areas.

    • Theaters:

      • Added mutual exclusion to weapon upgrades. This can be used to exclude any two upgrades from being equipped simultaneously that are in different upgrade slots. Under a weapon upgrade add “excluded_upgrades”, with an arbitrary key and a value set to the name of the upgrade to exclude. The exclusion should be defined on the latter of the pair in the theater file.

      • Added “overlay” setting to gear definitions.

      • Added the “third_person” subsection to weapon definitions.

    • Replaced c_thirdpersonshoulder with sv_thirdperson and all the associated settings.

    Capa Mode (beta)

Introducing new features to the roaming spectator mode, currently controlled using Console Variables. The name "Capa" is an homage to one of the greatest war photographers, Robert Capa, who co-founded Magnum Photos following the Second World War. His images of Omaha Beach on D-Day are iconic. Sadly, he was killed by a mine in Indochina in 1954. Capa had a famous saying: "If your photographs aren't good enough, you're not close enough," and this feature will help you get closer to the action while spectating.

    • spec_camera_options_gui 1, displays UI to adjust f-stop, focal length, and focal distance

    • spec_bank 1, enables camera banking

      • spec_bank_angle <-180...180>, Maximum camera banking/roll angle

      • spec_bank_smoothing <0..1>, Banking interpolation amount (higher = slower)

    • spec_handheld <0...n>, enables handheld camera feature that moves the camera around as if it were held by a camera operator

      • spec_handheld_frequency , frequency at which the camera shakes (recommended value is 0.3)

    • spec_fov 1, enables manual FOV control while in Capa mode allowing you to zoom in and zoom out using the scroll wheel

      • spec_interpolate_smoothing <0...1>, interpolation amount

    • spec_interpolate_position 1, smooth out camera position

      • spec_interpolate_position_smoothing <0...1>, interpolation amount

    DOI Community Map Showcase

    Bridge at Remagen by ThirdEye

Starting May 6th, New World Interactive will host 5 custom servers for Day of Infamy community-made maps to help determine which maps will be included in the next official update for the mod. The community will help decide the winners by voting for their favorites in a survey.

To launch the event, NWI creative director Andrew Spearin will host a livestream and invite all the level designers to join in playing through each map to gain feedback from both the community and fellow designers.

There are many excellent DOI maps in progress that we are excited to playtest. For a DOI map to be included, it must be published on Workshop by May 6th. Hopefully the maps that are not uploaded to Workshop yet are able to have them ready to playtest in time for the event. Iteration and updates throughout the playtesting phase are encouraged. The timeline for testing and the deadline for selecting the top map are to be determined.

For a preview of maps being made for the Day of Infamy mod, check the official forum.

TheRA1DER has been playing Insurgency for a while now, and has made multiple videos featuring new content, tips, and even naming us the best FPS from 2014. We actually streamed with him before one year ago. We’ll be playing our new official WWII mod Day of Infamy, which is now compatible with the live branch.

As always, we’ll be happy to answer any questions in the stream about Insurgency.
