Update #6

We've released a small patch today addressing a couple of issues:

  • Fixed the Leaderboards menu crashing the game
  • There is now a loading message for leaderboards (instead of the previous "No entries" by default)
  • Hid the voice volume setting*
* We experimented with voice chat during Early Access but couldn't get it into a usable, network-efficient state. This setting essentially didn't do anything and just caused confusion.
Thanks to everyone who has been playing Scrunk both new and old!

Scrunk is now free!

You can now play Scrunk for free! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4e9IEsCpyek If you've never played Scrunk, it's an online team-based building and raiding game. The goal is to destroy the enemy's "core" while defending your own. You'll also run into hostile mechs, world events and plenty of explosions along the way.

Please consider purchasing the Titan Pack DLC - all revenue from that goes towards server and upkeep costs.
We've made a number of improvements to general stability and servers this update too. We'll be watching out for any issues throughout the coming days but feel free to come along to our Discord server if you have any concerns or want to discuss the game. See you all online!

Leaving Early Access and Going Free to Play - April 16th

Weve been trying to give Scrunk a full release for a long time now. Between personal commitments and a general lack of time, weve found it hard to do so up till now. Were very happy with the game weve made and we feel like theres no way Scrunk doesnt leave Early Access.
With our transition out of Early Access, Scrunk will be going Free to Play. The sad reality of our industry is regardless of the quality of your game, its hard to justify putting a price on it when AAA studios are launching hugely successful and popular multiplayer games for free.
However, servers cost money and while we are hobbyist developers we still want to be able to support our games as best we can. So were launching the Titan Pack, a purely cosmetic DLC item that grants you a unique skin for both your player character and their weapons. All revenue from the Titan Pack is pumped right into our server costs. Wed love to keep the servers up as long as possible and as long as players enjoy our game.
All existing owners of Scrunk will be granted the Titan Pack on April 16th, thanks for your support!
Scrunk leaves Early Access on April 16th and we hope to see you online and in our Discord Server. Never played Scrunk? Scrunk is an online team-based building and raiding game. Fight off mechs and infiltrate the enemy teams base while building up and defending your own.

Update #4: Halloween

Welcome to Scrunks first seasonal event. Were celebrating halloween with new limited time item graphics, enemy graphics, a spooky new player style and a brand new weapon. Dont own Scrunk yet, or know someone who wants it? Read through until the end for a special Halloween treat.
While a lot of the new spooky graphics are only around for this event, the new fire rocket is here to stay. The fire rocket is an ammo type that explodes as normal however when it does explode, it leave a number of fires around the radius of the explosion. This can be used to deny specific areas while still doing massive damage. These rockets are not craftable and will be found rarely in chests. With this update, weve introduced support for alternative skins for blocks something we may use going forward. Some items will have new graphics for this event and explosions and bullets are updated to match! Youll also find candy, a new health restoring item, in crates.
Halloween will persistent until November 5th so make sure to login and check out all the temporary seasonal content before its gone!

Changelog

ADDITIONS
  • Added the Halloween seasonal event with new block graphics, new enemy graphics and a new player head style
  • Added Candy which (for the duration of the Halloween event) will heal for slightly less than Syringes, but can stack more
  • Added Fire Rockets that will leave fires around the explosion radius
CHANGES
  • Reduced the chance of finding a rocket launcher in a crate by 2%
  • Reduced the chance of finding the builders package (sheet metal wall, barbed wire and landmines) in an airdrop by 2%
  • Increased the chance of finding the destruction package (rocket launcher, rockets and scrap) in an airdrop by 2%
FIXES
  • Fixed a bug where the Chaingun would have some out of place pixels when firing.
  • Fixed a number of authentication-related security vulnerabilities
  • Fixed an issue where some players wouldnt be networked for a while after they had logged in

Update #3: Leaderboards

Hey everyone! The servers are back up with a massive new patch. There's lots of stuff this time round, check out the changelog for all the posts. Make sure you read till the end for some Steam keys!
We've also done a lot of work towards stats not increasing if they're against your own team (e.g. teamkilling) and getting kill credit for your placeables' kills (e.g. landmines, fire, etc). Checkout the devlog for a load of pictures showing off some of the new UI. We're sorry for the server down time but server cost a lot. We'll be putting up two NAE servers for now. If there's more demand we'll put more up.

ScrunkTools

We've started a new GitHub repo with all our tools and scripts for server owners. Check it out: https://github.com/SleepyStudios/ScrunkTools

Changelog

ADDITIONS
  • Added leaderboards! This new menu will allow you to see all other players' ranks as well as your own in a list sorted by rank.
  • Added hidden servers. Using the -h launch parameter, your server will no longer appear in the server browser and players won't be able to matchmake into it. Hidden servers will also not report match stats.
  • The Core UI will now visually countdown the health of cores to make the UI stand out more.
  • Added a new UI element showing vote-kicks. It will display the name of the kickee, the time remaining and instructions on how to vote.
  • Added a new /stats chat command that will show you your stats including blocks destroyed, damage done and kills.
  • Added death messages for when you die to another player's blocks (e.g. explosives, barbed wire and fire).
  • Added a new /reportbug chat command for reporting bugs directly into our Discord.
  • Added a new /discord chat command to automatically join our server.
CHANGES
  • Halved the amount of rank points needed between each rank (500 -> 250).
  • Ammo can now stack up to 100.
  • Increased the damage of the pistol (16 -> 18).
  • You will now lose 50 rank points for leaving a game while the walls are down.
  • Your player stats are no longer incremented if they're against your own team. E.g. your "destroyed blocks" stat is no longer incremented if you destroy your own team's blocks.
FIXES
  • Fixed a number of server-side issues related to swapping items.
  • Fixed the space difference between the playerlist and the escape menu if both were open. The escape menu will now always be on top.
  • Fixed explosions not counting towards mech kills.
  • Fixed music volume not resetting after leaving the settings without applying.
  • Fixed music not playing again after exiting to the main menu and then going back into a game.

Devlog #1: Progress update

Hey there everyone, Just going to give a quick update on the state of the game, what we're working on and our plans for the future. First off, we've decided to do a big update and instead of releasing a number of smaller updates, we're merging some of them into one. Currently we're wrapping up most of the things we wanted to do in Updates #3, #4 and #5. Some of you may have noticed that the servers aren't up. The truth is we currently don't have to funds to support them however when this new update hits we'll be putting online a number of servers.

Leaderboards

Update #3 was supposed to be all about leaderboards. Leaderboards can now be seen via the main menu, showing off your in-game rank as well as everyone else's (sorted by rank).
We've also halved the amount of points required between ranks and there's now a penalty for leaving games early.

Hidden servers

You can now create hidden servers. These servers won't show up in the server browser and players can't matchmake into them.

Votekick UI

Originally planned for update #5, we've added a new UI element when a vote kick is in progress showing you how to vote, who's up for the vote and how long is left.

Discord integration

We've added a number of new Discord integrations. You can now type /reportbug [your message here] in the chat to report a bug directly to our bug reports channel in our Discord. You can also type /discord in-game to join our Discord directly.

Ownership and stat rework

All players now have ownership over their blocks. If a player dies to anything you've placed, you will gain kill credit for it. For example with barbed wire, fire and explosives. Currently this system doesn't apply to turrets as they are more active entities. With this ownership system, we're introducing changes to how player stats like damage done and kills work. You will no longer gain any stat progress if an action was taken against your team. For example you will no longer gain credit for destroying your own team's blocks. Another useful way of viewing how well you're doing can be found in the /stats command that will display useful statistics like the ones described above, as well as ones useful for achievements such as mech kills, scrap collected, etc.

Next steps

Our next step is to begin work towards the party system. We may delay this system and put it in another update later on but currently we're unsure. Everything else we talked about in the roadmap is most definitely still in the cards as necessities before we leave early access. We'll update you when we're closer to knowing when this new update will launch. Stop by our Discord for more of these little snippets of development and of course just to say hello. See you soon!

Scrunk Roadmap

We've got quite a few plans for what we want Scrunk to look like before we leave early access. In this post we'll be detailing the 5 updates we currently have in mind.

Update #3

In this update we plan on introducing Leaderboards. We'll have a dedicated menu screen showing off your rank and other players' ranks as well as highlighting the top players. We'll also be addressing a number of other issues with the ranking system. Firstly, there's currently no penalty for leaving a match halfway through. Starting with this update, you will lose a fixed amount of ranking. Secondly, ranking feels too grindy. The 500-point difference between ranks is far too much and as such we'll be reducing this to 250 instead.

Update #4

Games are better together. In this next update we're introducing a Party system. You'll be able to invite Steam friends and queue for/join servers together. As part of this update, we'll also be introducing hidden servers that can only be accessed if you have the IP address and ports. Hidden servers won't show up in the server browser and can't be quick matched into.

Update #5

Before the sixth update to the game we'd like to take a minute to address some quality of life issues. First off, we'll be adding a way to report problematic players. This is essential before leaving early access. In the same vein, we'll be adding a visual indicator for the votekick system. You'll be able to see the ratio of Yes to No votes as well as (obviously) who's up for a votekick. Finally, you may notice that dying to fire doesn't award kill credit to the player who used the flamethrower that caused the fire that killed you. The same is true for explosives (landmines, rocket launchers). In this update we'll be adding ownership to blocks so that you can now get proper kill credit for block-related kills and for victims to see who they were killed by.

Update #6

Next up is bots. We'll be adding player bots that'll do the three basic actions that most players do: scavenging, shooting and raiding. Player bots will fill in for players until their spots are replaced. This will lay the foundations for our 7th update.

Update #7

This is the big one! We love Scrunk's PvE threats and would love to add more. That's why for the sixth update we're planning on introducing a boss enemy that'll be a threat to both teams. Expect explosions and team fights over what promises to be an incredible reward if you manage to destroy this enemy. Like the blast zones and airdrops, this will be a random event that will occur occasionally (perhaps only once per match).

A note on servers

To try and save on server costs we'll be closing down the EU and NAW servers. If demand increases for these servers, we're happy to bring them back up but more likely than not they won't be around until our exit from early access.

Timeline

We're not exactly sure on the timeline for all these updates. We're a two man team (artist and programmer) and some of these patches will be bigger tasks than others. As such, we'll be sticking to a schedule of an update about every month. Update #3 may be slightly outside that schedule as I'm going on holiday for two weeks.

Thanks for reading!

Did you know we have a Discord? Come say hello and see our progress updates.

Update #2: Reworks

Good evening! We got a lot of useful feedback over the free weekend and in this patch we're implementing some of these suggestions to make Scrunk more intuitive.

  • Fixed a bug that made the lobby player count increase twice if a player was disconnected from a server
  • Fixed the defuse bar looping at high pings

More new server tools

We've created a new script for use in conjunction with our "launchservers" script. The runbatchserverupdate script will kill all screen instances (created by the launchservers script), run the runserverupdate script we added last patch and launch your batch instances. The script can be executed like so: "./runbatchserverupdate SERVER_GROUP_NAME NUM_SERVERS". The script comes included in our "setupec2" script and of course can also be downloaded from the link above.

Thank you!

Thanks for reading and once again thanks for playing. If you'd like to get involved with our community come over to our Discord channel and say hello!
