Hey Everybody!

It's been two weeks since my last update. I've been very busy. I've made a really cool video for you this week, covering all that was completed recently. Good news: the alpha is done! So, I'm working on the beta now, which backers will get to play. A few more months, and the beta should be done. I'm really excited to move into this phase, because it means I finally get to make new levels, new enemies, new bosses, and really expand the world of Lazr. It's a very exciting time, but it's also a very busy time, so I apologize for being a little late with this update. I think I'm going to move to updating every two weeks. This new schedule will give me more time to produce content and work on the game. So, in another two weeks I'll post the next update video, hopefully with some new content in it too! This week was super busy - I worked on the main story spiral and modeled a bunch of stuff in 3d. Here is this week's video:

It's really exciting to see the story spiral working, along with the level count. I think this will help players to understand the 'challenge' of Lazr much easier - beat all 99 levels. The rest of development will be creating these spiral levels with interesting level designs, enemies, and bosses, along with a story that ties it all together and interesting characters that change and evolve. Oh yeah, and *cloth*. ;)

This week I worked on districts, and preparing the alpha to be played. I spent some time rewriting the engine behind the spinning overworld maps. Now this engine is much faster and can handle more particles, which allows me to make environmental effects, such as fire and smoke. It's important to be able to make these effects, because in the world lore the city is rioting and being destroyed. I also spent time on polishing the user interface and experience, for districts. This week was super busy, and I've made two videos that cover it all:

Here's a summarized list of what's been updated:


  • smoke was improved visually, and can be pushed around now.
  • smoke emitter was created.
  • clouds were fixed and are back in the game now.
  • while in fluid, smoke rises slower and ignores wind.
  • cluster levels 1 and 2 now have smoke emitting from pipes.
  • there is now a fps counter on screen, in addition to frametime.
  • particle system was refactored to be single threaded, due to
  • cache size limitations of psvita. psys was optimized as well.
  • lasers no longer produce debris.
  • a button pops on dialog screen upon input.
  • options menu screen was completed (for now).
  • frames per second counter was added, along with game timer.
  • cluster district art was updated.
  • mission select screen was completed.
  • title was redesigned and linked to mission select screen.
  • mission select screen links to cluster, bionic menagerie,
  • and war foundry districts, which load appropriate levels.
  • alpha city district created, title swapped to it.
  • mission review screen was added, zooms out of district screen
  • to reveal it, zooms back in too. part 1 and 2 produced.


So I've got an internal Alpha that I'm testing on different platforms, and getting prepared for players to test later, as a Beta. It's taken me a lot longer than I planned to get to this stage, so development is behind schedule a bit, but considering all that's happened (pandemic, category 5 hurricane), overall development is in a great spot. It took me a bit longer this week to make these videos, sorry for a Monday post! Hope you have a great week.

17th Dev Vlog

Hey Everyone,
Here's the 17th dev log, focusing on fluids:

I'm really excited to develop fluids more. That's what I'll be working on the next week, then a boss fight is planned, to test out water while also developing the boss systems. Then I plan to build the levels leading up to that boss fight, the dialog as well, and it will probably be the Syntel orb based 'Bionic Menagerie' mission. Then I can combine that Syntel mission with the intro levels and that will be a work in progress Alpha that we can start testing with. That's the overall plan, right now. There's much more to add as well, from holographic ads, to holographic pets (Holodog!), to a variety of npcs and enemies, then mods and ui improvements, district overworld maps as well. Lots to do!

Steam Games Festival!

I wanted to announce that Lazr will be featured in the Steam Game Festival coming up. Very exciting! The demo is available for free on Steam, and I'm looking forward to seeing let's plays and videos from streamers, along with feedback from players.

Now is a good time to introduce Lazr to new players:

Lazr is a physics based 2d platformer with cloth simulations, set in a cyberpunk city called Alpha City One. You play as the killer android Lazr, facing off against rogue AI and mega-corporations.

Lazr is an action-platformer that combines fast-paced, skilled movement and combat with a dark and beautiful world, exploring the theme of what it means to be human. Indulge yourself in decadent levels, complete with their own weather systems and architectures. Explore Mode7 inspired city districts - from
seedy underground housing districts, to shiny, corporate offices floating in the sky, to sweltering foundries churning out war machines for the weapons manufacturer Voth - and more!

The original idea for Lazr came from a challenge posed by a fellow programmer to add verlet cloth sims into a platformer. A protoype was built, and it was so much fun to play that the decision was made to turn it into a larger demo. A video of the demo went viral on Twitter, and the decision was made to make Lazr into a full fledged game.

Dev Vlog #12 and #11

Hey Everybody!

Lazr is in a great spot right now, everything's working really well and fast - so next week will be a bit more focused on some technical stuff. There's so much to do, and The Big Art Push is still just right around the corner. I've got the styles established for Bluegardens/Downtown and Humacorp, and I really like how they look.

The game is missing holographic ads right now, as I'm still reworking their style to look better than they did in the demo. In particular, I'm working on making the volumetric lighting effect stronger for bright neon signs. I'm really excited to add new enemies and bosses and airbike levels too, as the intro/training levels have been defined well. The first 5-30 minutes of playing a new video game is crucial (to me), so a lot of focus and effort is going into that early experience with Lazr. I want to 'train' the player, so they feel powerful in-game, but that has to be done with respect to action and engagement. I don't want boring tutorial/training levels, in other words. And that's a critique I have of Lazr's demo - the training levels weren't engaging, and they introduced too many concepts at once. So, I designed the new opening of the game with that critique in mind.

Lazr Dev Vlog #4

Fully Funded on Kickstarter!

Hi there,

Just a quick update, we recently ran LAZR on Kickstarter, and are glad to say we've finished with about 105% of our goal. This puts LAZR on a strong release trajectory for around the end of this year, or at most beginning of next year. We are also looking into Backerkit, for those of you who may be interested in still pre-ordering or looking for additional physical merchandise.
