Arkhangel back on Steam...and FREE!

Hey everyone!

This is Zack, formerly with WNG. I'm excited to announce that I've successfully transferred Arkhangel to my own business entity. Working closely with Valve, we've managed to relist it on Steam, and I've decided to offer it for free from now on.

I apologize for any confusion caused. This change was necessitated by the dissolution of WNG, as the operating costs significantly outweighed Arkhangel's revenue. Additionally, the transfer process was delayed due to the setup of the new business entity for game publishing.

Regarding Arkhangel's future, I don't plan to make substantial updates to the title. Maintenance builds have become quite time-consuming, and updating the entire code for compatibility with the latest version of Unity is not a small feat. However, I'm still passionate about this project and might revisit the codebase occasionally, so I won't say it's the end.

For Mac users, I'm aware that Steam lists the game as incompatible post-Catalina, but I've managed to run it successfully on Ventura. I will create some tutorials and share them both here and on the itch.io page. In addition, I'll be posting a full walkthrough on these platforms, as the WNG website will also soon be decommissioned.

I hope you're all doing well, and I apologize again for any confusion. A big thank you to Valve for their support in this transition.

Best regards,
Zack

Nominate Arkhangel: The House of the Seven Stars for the Labor of Love Award!

Greetings friends!

We would be so happy if you would consider nominating Arkhangel: The House of the Seven Stars for the Labor of Love Award for the Steam Awards!

As you all know, we have been working tirelessly on Arkhangel since release and have pushed multiple updates since 2018 culminating in a massive overhaul this year that added full point & click navigation and a host of other features. For a breakdown of updates that we've released over the years:

+ Added traditional point & click navigation - This is now the default and recommended method of navigation.
+ Significant overhaul to Player navigation settings including faster turning and transitions and allowing the player to continue walking in the direction they are facing after a camera change if input is still active. The direction will update when the user actively changes their input direction.
+ Added full game controller support. This was a full replacement of the Unity Input System! Yowza!
+ Restructured menus to allow for easier controller navigation.
+ Added a Run option to allow the player to explore at a faster rate.
+ Added a method of fast travel that unlocks at a certain point of the game.
+ Interface updates that include opening the inventory on a hotspot interaction.
+ Inventory has been significantly overhauled. It is now opened/closed by an input key rather than a mouse over. Interaction methodology and presentation has also changed. This has had cascading effects on multiple other systems that required adjustments.
+ Added full tutorials both in menu and in game.
+ Inventory redesign.
+ Adjusted and revamped a ton of camera angles/transitions
+ Reconstructed & revamped many areas to better fit point & click navigation (and just general flow improvements)
+ Steam achievements!
+ Several bug fixes and bits of polish throughout including changes to dialogue and some characters

Just click this link and nominate us:

Arkhangel version 1.5 is NOW AVAILABLE

ATTENTION! The 1.5 patch for Arkhangel: The House of the Seven Stars is available now! After months of work, we finally have full point & click navigation in and working as the default mode. You can still use direct input if youd like but point & click is now the recommended and default setup when you play AA. There were a *ton* of additional updates in this patch.

Heres a full list of whats included:

Arkhangel 1.5 Patch Notes:

SPECIAL NOTE: Previous saved games are not supported. There were a number of invasive changes that will wreck havoc with old save files with unpredictable results. We recommend starting the game over from scratch.

+ Adding Point & Click Navigation - This is now the default and recommended method of navigation.
+ Input change when in Direct Input Mode that allows the player to continue walking in the direction they are facing after a camera change if input is still active. The direction will update when the user actively changes their input direction.
+ Interface updates that include opening the inventory on a hotspot interaction.
+ Added a method of fast travel that unlocks at a certain point of the game.
+ Run Toggle is now implemented and mapped to LEFT CTRL by default. This works in both point & click and direct input. This can also be mapped to a game controller.
+ Updated Menu Flow & Tutorial
+ Minor inventory redesign
+ Adjusted a ton of camera angles/transitions
+ Fixed random issue with Gabrielle's dialogue triggering in Haven Overworld when she wasn't around
+ Revamped several camera compositions and transitions.
+ Reconstructed & revamped many areas to better fit point & click navigation
+ Slight Animation adjustments to Michael
+ Changed default game pad button mapping to match updated UI.
+ Adjusted Low and Medium quality settings to eek out a little more performance.
+ One inventory item that you originally started with is now something that you need to find.

Wed like to take this moment to thank everyone for the great feedback since the initial release of Arkhangel. This is a game that has been part of our lives for a very long time and we are immensely proud of it. We appreciate all the love and support that you have all shown. This will more than likely be the final major content release for Arkhangel but we have really enjoyed the (sometimes bumpy) journey.

Point Click navigation is officially being worked on!

The work has begun on adding full point & click navigation to Arkhangel! It's...gonna take awhile. ;-)

Arkhangel 11/2019 Update: Linux, Steam Achievements, New Tutorials OH MY!

Hey everyone!

We've been working on a number of new updates and features over the last couple of months and we are extremely excited to let you know that they are now live!

PATCH NOTES:

Steam Achievements - Are you a completionist that is always looking for bragging rights? Well there are now 25 brand-spanking new achievements for you to discover in Arkhangel.

New Tutorials - Were you falling asleep reading the massive block of text that was the former tutorial page? Worry not! There is now a more robust and descriptive tutorial for Arkhangel complete with fancy pictures. There is even *gasp* animations! So fancy.

Linux Now Supported - You read that right! We finally have support for all of you Linux lovers out there. It took some doing just in terms of Zack trying to figure out how Linux worked, but once he did, it got uploaded and is now ready for you to play!
** Special tech note** - if you are an nVidia user and find some games have strange black dots across the screen, then we highly recommend adding the following to your Steam Launch Options for Arkhangel, "-force-glcore42 -force-clamped". That should get you going.

Multiple Bug Fixes - Our dutiful players discovered a few difficult-to-spot bugs during their journeys, so we collected the data and made several fixes. Michael can no longer get caught in a weird squatting/walking state towards the end of the game if you turn the inventory on and off and move the directional buttons around. You will also no longer get clipping issues in the Path of Shadow...in fact, there was a substantial reconstruction of that area for some upcoming changes.

Speaking of...

WHAT'S NEXT:

We've been reading reviews and collating feedback from a number of people and have been prepping ourselves for a pretty substantial update in the coming months. It's clear that some of the camera angles, transitions, and control methods aren't working for everyone, so we are going to dive into those deep waters. We're not 100% sure what the outcome is going to be and we are fairly positive that it's going to be a very invasive update, so we are going to take our time with it and keep you posted on our progress.

As always, thank you so much for the support. We really appreciate you all and we are looking forward to what the future will bring for Arkhangel.

Have a great weekend,
-Winter Night Games

We recommend playing Arkhangel with a Game Controller!

Greetings friends!

As we get more players popping on through the Halloween sale, I just wanted to remind everyone that we do support game controllers with Arkhangel. In fact, that's how I tend to play it any more!

So dust off that old 360 controller, plug it in, set your preferred input setting in Akrhangel, and get to explorin'!

Oh yeah, you can modify your controller layout however you'd like!

Happy Halloween, everyone!

August 17th, 2019: Maintenance Patch!

Hey all!

Just a quick note to let you know we pushed a small update to Arkhangel. This is more of a quality of life/maintenance patch than anything. Here's a brief rundown:

* Fixed an audio oddity in the Asylum on Day 1 when you talk with Elizabeth

* Adjusted Gabrielle's dialogue when she's standing in the attic in Day 1 when you are playing as Michael

* Fixed a rare (but potentially evil) save/load bug in Day 6 that could promote a progression issue.

* Provided an additional fix for people that might have already experienced said save/load bug.

Mac OSX, Windows 32-bit, and Windows 64-bit builds all updated.

Have a great weekend,
-Winter Night Games

Arkhangel is now $8.99/6.19...FOREVER!!

Greetings all!

One year ago (well...one year ago on the 27th), we released our first project, "Arkhangel: The House of the Seven Stars". This was a labor of love for both Josh and myself that took over five years of figuring out what the hell we were doing, realizing we're dumb, RE-figuring out what we were doing, sobbing openly, and then eventually releasing a game. We learned a lot and we would change a lot, but we are proud of our little game. Is it perfect? Of course not. We've been listening to player feedback, we pushed out a few major updates, and there are a few things on our road map that we'd like to address, but for now, we're just happy that it's out there and has over 1000 players and wanted to celebrate by dropping the price to $8.99/6.19 PERMANENTLY and hope that more people want to join the party!

Thanks for all of the support over the last year and stay tuned for more from Winter Night Games!

-Zack

64-bit (Windows) Executable now uploaded

Hey all!

We have pushed a new build that includes an 64-bit executable for Windows along with a handful of UI bug fixes. Not a huge update, but an important one. Here's a quick list:

1) New 64-bit Windows version. Hopefully, this will help with the random Win10 crash reports we've seen. Steam should automatically play the 64-bit version if you are running a 64-bit OS.
2) UI bug fix: You can no longer open your inventory during a QTE
3) UI bug fix: Hotspot interaction while your inventory is open has been disabled
4) There was a random point where Gabrielle could get pushed to the other end of a level and it was hilarious...but decided it should be fixed. :-)

As always, let us know if you come across something strange. Always happy to help track oddities down!

ARKHANGEL VERSION 1.2 AVAILABLE NOW AT 33% OFF FOR A LIMITED TIME!

Greetings Winter Night Gamers!

We are very excited to announce that the long-overdue update for Arkhangel is now available with a limited time special promotion sale at 33% off list price!

So, what all is included with this update? Let's get to it, shall we?

---

UPDATES:
+ Added full game controller support. This was a full replacement of the Unity Input System! Yowza!
+ Significant overhaul to Player navigation settings and speed.
+ Added a "Run" option to allow the player to explore at a faster rate.
+ Restructured menus to allow for easier controller navigation.
+ Inventory has been significantly overhauled. It is now opened/closed by an input key rather than a mouse over. Interaction methodology and presentation has also changed. This has had cascading effects on multiple other systems that required adjustments.
+ Visual Quality settings, Screen Resolution settings, and Controller Customization are now all handled with in-game menu interactions.
+ Updated multiple camera transitionsin the game to be fades rather than movement based.
+ Updated camera positions and control perspective in the Library and Saloon.
+ A ton of small tweaks and adjustments!

KNOWN ISSUES:
+ Use previous saved games at your own risk! With the sheer amount of changes to the underlying systems of Arkhangel, we cannot 100% guarantee that loading into old save games before this update will be completely reliable. By all means, give it a shot, but know that there very well could be significant issues with player animation, controls, and menus.
+ We recommend using D-PAD when navigating through menus with a game controller.

---

This update took significantly longer than we expected. Being the only Unity developer on our team, I (Zack) vastly underestimated the number of hurdles and cascading effectsthat such an update was going to introduce. That being said, we've had a lot of great feedback on this update. Friend of Winter Night Games and game industry veteran, James Goddard gave us some incredibly valuable advice regarding player speed, animation settings, and controller feel. When the guy that worked on Street Fighter II gives pointers, you LISTEN!

Thanks James! :-D

As always, continue to give us feedback. Your thoughts and insights have been incredibly valuable and are the main reason why we pushed so hard on this update. We knew that the controls needed some love and your guidance made us really want to focus on it with a microscope! Y'all help us grow!

Okay, with that being said, the update is now live! If you've already played the game, we'd love for you to check out the new control scheme and some of the other bells and whistles. If you've been waiting for this update to take the plunge, the limited time sale at 33% off is a great way to dive in! :-)

Default Controller Layout

Here's the default controller layout for the upcoming patch for "Arkhangel: The House of the Seven Stars". You'll be able to modify it to your liking. The game controller is quickly becoming our preferred way of playing the game!

We're getting closer and closer to wrapping this patch up. It's been a big one!

Game Controller support is coming SOON!

Hey all!

Based off of player feedback, we've really been focusing on adding game controller support and tweaking player movement settings. While it's not going to be a wholesale redesign of how the player moves, it is a substantial overhaul to some internal systems that will require a lot of testing before we release but we think that it's feeling much better. We're also adding the option to allow the player to run in addition to just walking, so if you want to take a quick jog around Haven, you'll be able to do so.

Expect an update in the next few weeks!

Thanks for all of the wonderful feedback, it is greatly appreciated!

-WNG

Arkhangel: Patch Notes 8/16/2018!

Greetings!

Just a quick update to let you know that we recently pushed a new build that has a handful of small fixes! Here's a quick list:

- Simplified a few QTE sequences to be more forgiving for lower spec machines
- Fixed a situation where you could get two bottles of alcohol in Day 2
- Added new journal entries after administering the medicine in Day 2

Future patches: We are currently investigating having actual game controller support and a full Linux port! Stay tuned for more information!

Arkhangel Windows 7

We've been getting a few reports online about some issues w/ Windows 7 & Arkhangel. AA was designed with Win10 in mind. While previous versions of Windows might technically run AA, they are not supported by us at this time so play on older versions of Windows at your own risk!
