Version 0.2.3 | Level Progression, KOTP Upgrade, And Much More!

We are back with another major update to Tubetastic! Version 2.3.0 brings a lot of new exciting stuff, so make sure to read this post to find out what we've been working on.

Major Updates

King Of The Pool

King of the Pool is a fun game mode, and we've made it more fun with the addition of crates! No, EA didn't get to us. They're not loot crates; they're random fish crates that float in the water, and give you points when you break them.
The crates aren't alone! We also added barrels, which are, honestly, very satisfying to break!

Level Progression

Now we have levels! and XP! RPG stuff! Cool! It's simple: after every match, you get XP, based on your performance. Get enough XP and you level up!
You also unlock in-game features as you level up. So game modes, pool rules, and characters can now be acquired through leveling up. "But wait, I had access to everything before this!" And you still do! Existing players have already been given a high level, with everything unlocked. Now, you can't just have levels without competition! So we've added a separate leaderboard for the levels, which can be accessed in-game:

New Tutorial

We've created a shiny new tutorial, for players new to the game. Our boi Fishard takes you through moving, shooting, boosting, and everything awesome about Tubetastic!

Cross-Platform Support

The game now supports cross-platform with mobile devices. But wait, Tubetastic, on mobile? Yep, that's right. We're working on mobile ports of the game, for both Android and iOS. And honestly, we can't wait to release it on mobile devices. The unique control scheme makes it super fun and very easy to play, because you can play it with just one finger!

Smaller Updates

  • Added fish swimming underwater
  • Changed the internal save system for the game. The previous system broke when you used the same saves on a different computer. This system is also more secure.
  • PC users always point with the mouse, but now, if there's no mouse input, it automatically switches to the WASD/Arrow keys. This should help laptop users who play without a mouse.

Version 0.2.0 | Multiplayer Is Now Better Than Ever

Hey there! The big update is finally here. Tubetastic is now on version 0.2.0. Over the past couple months, we've been working hard to make the experience better for our players, including making major changes to the game's inner workings. So here are the updates!

Bots in Online Multiplayer

Previously, you could not play with bots online. So if you started an online match and no one was there, you couldn't play... Well, that's changing. Now when you start an online match, the empty slots will be automatically filled with bots. So you can start playing without having to wait for anyone!
So does that mean that you have to keep playing that match with bots? No!

Mid-match joining

Previously, a player could only join a match that hadn't started. But now, you can join a match that is already going on. So if you start an online game with bots, you can expect other players to join in and replace one of the bots.
So if you start a game, there's a chance that you may be put into a game that is already going on.

Bots with Friends

If you're playing with friends, you'll still get bots, if you don't have 4 players in total. You can disable that in the settings, so that you don't get bots when you have other players with you:

Tab Info

When in an online match, pressing/holding the Tab key ("select" on controllers) will open an info pop-up, where you can see info about the players, such as their kills, healths, pings and names.
You can also bring up the menu on the character selection screen, to see the game mode settings and the pool rules.

Attacking is Now Easier

Previously, you had to repeatedly press the fire button to shoot or attack. Not anymore! You can now hold the A key (or LMB/Space) to keep shooting. Although, it's going to shoot at a slower rate, but the difference is small. So you will have to keep tapping that button if you want to be king of the pool!

Lobby Chat

When you're in a Steam party with your friends, you can chat with them in the menu, by pressing T.

Find New Friends

Like someone you're playing with? On the game over screen, you can now click on their name and their Steam profile will open.
From there you can send them a friend request, and a few pictures of your cat.

Smaller Updates

  • Chat messages now fade away after some time
  • You can now take screenshots with F12
  • Auto-gun power-up was nerfed - shoots less bullets now
  • Big power-up was buffed - it won't slow you down to a halt now, and you can shoot at a higher rate
  • Indicator arrows now appear for bots as well (they appear when a player is off-screen)
  • The quit pop-up on the title screen now accepts mouse input
  • If blur (used in the settings and pause menu) is slow on your computer, it will be disabled
  • Improved the offline randomizer - now there's a slightly lesser chance of getting pool rules that make the match longer or harder
  • Slowed the camera's spinning speed when waiting for players
  • Improved AI in King of the Pool

Fixed Bugs

  • Server did not handle split packets correctly
  • Auto-gun could be created without the player
  • If there were 3 players on the game start screen, and the second one left, it would mess up the game
  • When only one bot was left, it would be really hard to hit
  • Keyboard input wouldn't work in the pause menu if you had more than 1 players locally
  • Disconnected player would release an endless amount of smoke if the next round started with them being disconnected
  • If a player left a round-based match, the rest of the players could not proceed
  • Couldn't see player names in King of the Pool and Balls of Fury
  • Chat worked when the pause menu was opened
  • Mouse input could be messed up after alternating between fullscreen and windowed
  • Balls of Fury wasn't as stable
  • Steam party bugs
  • The feedback screen could pop up in-game
  • Leaderboard scroll would not reset across separate game modes
  • You could stop the title music by going into credits and backing quickly
Thanks for reading! Make sure you update the game and check out Tubetastic 0.2.0. Let us know what you think!

What have we been up to? | Updates to come in 0.2.0

Hello Tubers! Hope you're having fun with Tubetastic 0.1.9. You might have noticed that it has been a month since our last post. Where have we been? What have we been up to? Let's talk about it in this post.

Early Access Release

After releasing our first ever game as an indie group on Early Access, we were thrilled to see people enjoy something that we had worked on for more than a year. The release also brought a lot of suggestions and feedback from our players, to make the game better, which we wrote down and started working on. A big part of that feedback was requests for two features, both of which we had in mind for the full release (after Early Access):
  • Bots should be allowed in online matches
  • Players should be able to join mid-match
We felt that these two features would be a big addition to the game, and would greatly improve the players' experiences. They'll be coming to you in 0.2.0, but we don't have an ETA, since we will need to do a lot of QA testing to ensure the best possible experience for you. For now, let's talk about the features listed above, and more that's coming in 0.2.0.

Bots in Online

Right now, if you want to play a game with bots, you have to start the game in offline mode. If you want to play with your friends online, you have to start it in online mode. With 0.2.0, we'll be bringing these two worlds together: you'll be able to start the game in online mode and begin playing with bots right away.
So, the empty slots in your game will be filled with bots. This means that you can even start playing alone, without having anyone else join your lobby!

Mid-Match Joining

Once your game has begun, anyone will be able to join your match, no matter where you are in the game.
So you can just start playing with Botty McBotterSons, and when another player loads up their game, no matter where they are on the planet, they'll be able to find your game, join and shoot you to oblivion.

What if I don't want bots online?

Don't worry, you'll be able to disable bots if you just want to play with your friends and beat their asses without the bots interrupting you.
There will be an option in the settings to turn off bots. Of course, you'll still get bots if there's no one else in your lobby, but once you have more than one players and bots are disabled, they'll disappear. If you have them enabled though, you'll be able to play alongside bots and your friends. Not to say that the bots aren't your friends... they'll always be there for you.

Player Info Pop-Up

You know how you can press Tab in other games to view information about the connected players? Well, we're adding that to the game. You'll be able to open it using the Select button on your gamepad, as well as the Tab key.
You can see info about the players, like the health, kills, etc. and their powers/weapons. And you can also see their pings (yes, my ping is bad, I live half an Earth away from the server).

We can't wait!

We're very excited for this update, and we hope that you are too! We cannot wait to finish working on it and bring the awesomeness to your computers. Till then, happy summer!

Version 0.1.9 Updates | QOL Improvements

This update is our first after the Early Access release, and so it brings a lot of QOL changes based on feedback from our players (thank you all!). So let's start with:

Keyboard/Mouse Controls

Players had complained that playing without a gamepad was hard, and rightly so. Your Tuber could only be turned around using your four arrow keys (or WASD), making it hard to aim at stuff. So we changed it to use the mouse for aiming. Now you can move around with your arrow keys and point with your mouse cursor!

Controller Changes

Previously, moving controlled aiming. You could only shoot in the direction that you were moving in. This changed with the update mentioned above - using your mouse, you could aim in one direction while moving in another. We had to do something similar for our gamepad folks as well, as to not make keyboard controls OP. So now, you can optionally use your right analog stick to aim, while you use your left stick to move and the triggers to shoot/boost. Since it is optional, you don't have to change your style of play! You can still keep using your left stick and never touch the right one. It'll be like nothing ever changed.

Servers & Improved Matchmaking

There's been a little update to the servers list: US East was removed. The matchmaking system was improved. Previously, if you selected one server, you could only find matches on that server. So searching on EU, you couldn't play with players playing on US servers. Now, if you search for a match on a specific server, and nobody is playing there, it will automatically move to the server that has players (if any). So you don't have to worry about manually selecting a populated server.

More Updates

  • If a player leaves a match before the game starts, they are removed from the match instead of giving them the "dead" status
  • If the host leaves before the match starts, it restarts your matchmaking request
  • Reduced the frequency of mines in Survival, and added a little delay when they spawn in a ring
  • Implemented sentry.io, so whenever your game crashes, we receive the crash data so that we could fix it

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed countdown graphics, at the start and end of the match
  • King of the Pool bots will now try to go around barriers instead of getting stuck
  • Fixed a bug where the game would start before you pressed Enter/Start
  • Fixed issues related to delta-timing, which mainly affected slower systems
  • Fixed an issue where other players would face your mouse if using keyboard/mouse
  • More minor fixes

Version 0.1.8 Updates | Randomizer, Chat...

Hey there! As we get closer to our Early Access release, we've improved and added some things with versions 0.1.7 & 0.1.8. Here we'll talk about some of those updates.

Offline Randomizer

The game can be played offline with bots or with other players using splitscreen, so we thought of a way to make offline more fun: adding a randomizer that puts you in a random game mode with random mutators!

Online Quick Match

The Quick Match option is available in online mode. Just like the randomizer, it puts you in a random game mode. Having a Quick Match option was crucial in making the game easier to play online - just hit a button and join the first match you find!
It works when you're in a party too. Can't decide which game mode you want to play with your friends? Let the game decide for you!

Improved Chat

Chat got some QOL updates, based on feedback from our alpha testers. Now, you can use either T or Enter to open chat. Previously, you could only use Enter, which didn't allow you to open the chat on screens where you needed to press Enter to proceed. Now, you can chat on the matchmaking screen, before the actual match has started. Previously, the host could not chat (because of the Enter issue mentioned above), and names weren't displayed (instead, it showed the player numbers) because the names weren't loaded until the match started.
Chat text also has shadows now, so that it's easier to read on lighter backgrounds.

Improved Party Features

The game supports party play, through Steam invites. When you're in a party, the party leader selects the game mode to play, while the other party members wait. So we made it so that all party members could see what game mode the party leader was selecting.
We gave some more control to the party leader - if the party leader backs from a game mode (let's say they decided that they want to play some other game mode), all the party members are sent back to the menu as well. Similarly, when the match ends, the rematch options are unavailable to the party members, except for the leader. The party leader must select an option (rematch or go back to the menu), which is selected for the rest of the party members as well.
This makes sure that all party members stay in sync.

Servers

We started our multiplayer development with one Europe server. For the Early Access release, we've added two US servers as well (East and West).
The game will get more servers as it grows after the Early Access release.

Thanks for reading! Make sure to wishlist the game:
