Major Content Update

Today we've published our largest update yet with an entirely new dungeon to explore! 7 new enemies, 17 new maps, an Overworld city with shops, plus hundreds of bug fixes and improvements! The Cyclopean City is an ancient architectural nightmare uncovered by pilgrims far to the north -- Adventurers may travel by boat from the castle farm to discover what horrors were unveiled by these naive excavations! Infinite depths of terror and the abominable Shoggoth await!

Mac Linux Released

Today we published the Mac and Linux ports for The Yellow King! We have a very small programmer team of two, so it's difficult to test the game on a lot of configurations. If you have any issues on Mac or Linux we want to get them fixed ASAP -- Let us know at Contact@Spellbook.com or on Discord at https://discord.gg/b9qjXEN We've also updated the Windows client with some new features! Minimap markers make finding things more easy, signposts guide players around the Overworld, AI pathfinding is better, and a lot of performance and memory issues were fixed during the porting process. By the end of next week we hope to launch our largest content update so far: The Cyclopean City! Players will discover an entirely new dungeon with new maps, monsters, bosses, puzzles, loot, and more!
The Cyclopean City is a frozen Antarctic hellscape populated by twisted abominations from The Deep -- The Shoggoth, and their enslaved human cultists!

Hardcore Mode Shoggoths

This week we've updated Hardcore Mode with a significant boost in challenge and reward, made improvements to AI behavior, and modified player physics in preparation for new features in our next dungeon: The Cyclopean City! Due to the coronavirus lockdown we've pivoted our development roadmap to accommodate working from home, so features that don't require team collaboration are being prioritized: That means lots of new monsters and maps!
Our AI designer has been hard at work crafting four horrifying Shoggoths to serve as sub-boss and boss encounters in The Cyclopean City. Each has an assortment of puzzle-like abilities, such as psychic screams, poisonous slime trails, and tentacle-grabs that drag unwary explorers into their hideous gaping maw! Once released this will be the largest content update of The Yellow King since early access launch! We've already begun internal testing, and our goal is to deliver the new dungeon to you in about 3 weeks.

Dungeon Floors Hardcore

Keeping up with our tradition of weekly content updates we've added two new features! Players now plumb the depths of dungeons by exploring and unlocking floors, providing access to better loot and more challenging content. Monsters will now drop trinkets and weapons, there are 9 new leaderboards, and we've added a Hardcore mode (work-in-progress) that provides even more challenge with a fat loot bonus! Once you're comfortable with normal dungeon floors try out the Hardcore floors! We're also trying an experiment with monsters: They have a physical player-blocking collider that pushes you around and prevents clipping. Features that require team collaboration are being delayed in favor of things that can be done by individuals. Our primary focus is to produce a new dungeon experience: The Cyclopean City! Camera Controls, Boss Fights, Audio

We've released fresh new content and features every week since launch and it's not going to stop any time soon! Everything was designed by players in our Discord chat! This has been an intense 10 days with tons of tweaks and improvements: Over the course of three updates we've added two new maps, a new boss fight, new leaderboard, over 1,000 audio effects for monsters and enemies throughout the game, new quick-travel portals in dungeons to get you around faster, and by far the most requested improvement: Camera controls! Cycle camera views with the mouse wheel or 'C' key, allowing for a more customized play experience. You can also play in first-person mode and look around with the arrow keys (or second gamepad joystick). This is still a work-in-progress, so expect more improvements to come, but it significantly improves the experience and tackles our biggest player issue since release. Thanks for all of your continued feedback! Next week we'll be working on mouselook+look toggle, strafe-lock, and better fidelity of movement controls with both keyboard and gamepads. Gamepad Support The Arena

We've released an average of two feature updates per week and aren't stopping anytime soon! New content this week includes a PvP Arena scenario, 4 new dungeon maps, 5 leaderboards, 2 quests, and 7 vanity items. Our most requested feature is now live! We've done a total re-write of the controller input system with native gamepad and joystick support, allowing players to bind inputs from any device to customize their play experience. This is a work-in-progress and many more improvements are coming soon (camera movement, mouselook, etc). Queue for The Arena anywhere in the game (Menu->Arena->Join) and you will automatically jump in once enough fighters are ready! In this prototype scenario, teams are matched from your Group and Guild so that you're often fighting together with friends. The scenario changes randomly -- Sometimes it can be free-for-all, or two large teams, or many small teams. Win or lose, players are rewarded with piles of XP and Runes for participating! Quests Trinket Backpack

Our push to release new content and features each week continues successfully! Three patches introduced Quests (Phase 1), the Trinket Backpack, 5 new leaderboards, two new rooms, four new AI opponents, skin variants for existing monsters, and new types of shops to discover! We've completely re-written the network code! Players will find everything more stable and less jittery -- Especially those on bad connections or playing overseas: 40% of our players log in from the UK, EU, China, and Australia and have generally reported a very smooth, high-quality experience. Weapon Loot Mystery Portals

The push to release new content every week continues -- All of it designed by players in our Discord chat! Several updates introduced an entirely new weapon equipment system, a mysterious portal exploration system, new vanity items, two new AI monsters, a new map, and tons of bug fixes. We've also increase loot drops everywhere to make exploration more rewarding. The first person who reports a serious bug or exploit will get a special Halo Hat, and all existing players got a unique Y'Golonac The Defiler Hat! All vanity items will be traded on the Steam Marketplace soon, so these things will have some real value! Shops Loot Stash

Our goal is to push new content and features each week for the next two months! Today we've introduced Shops and The Loot Stash. You'll find shops hidden throughout dungeons, who offer a selection of wares like trinkets and weapons. Eventually they will also sell food, dungeon lives, pets, and vanity items. In every shop and dungeon entrance you'll also find a large box called The Stash. Use it to store extra items you want to keep for later. You can now throw any melee weapon with the middle mouse click or Attack Button 3 in keybind options. There are tons of additional buffs to network and graphics performance, bigger damage hitboxes on all NPCs, new monsters to discover, boss fight bug fixes and other general improvements. Content Update v1.0.5

We've published the first content update: Trinkets, basic inventory and additional weapon slots! Also AI monsters are much less stupid! Players can discover millions of trinkets that impart a wide variety of stats and benefits. Stack them to customize your character's damage, movement speed, jumping, and weapon specialization. Soon you can move these trinkets to the Steam Marketplace to save, buy, and sell. The Yellow King is now available in Early Access! Our small indie team has worked hard to build a unique Lovecraft MMO rogue-lite with infinite dungeons, traps, puzzles and monsters that is finally ready for testing! Early Access Phase 2

Early Access release is now January 23rd, 2020. We completed all Phase 1 testing in a more limited closed alpha, and feel confident in an earlier release schedule. This means that the game you'll get to play in January will be much more finished than we had originally planned! The AI combat, boss fights, dungeon map generation, vanity items, and user interface came together more easily than we thought it would. Instead of investing several weeks into preparing and deploying a public Early Access "alpha test," it makes more sense to launch a robust product in January that will be closer to a finished game. That extra time can be spent preparing maps, fixing bugs, and adding new monsters and weapons. We're posting gameplay clips in our artwork section often. Early Access Begins Soon!

We've set Early Access release to November 21st (2019) to give us a little more time for content creation. We want first impressions to be good, and give you plenty to do Day 1! We're very happy with how the game is coming along! The avatar builder, trap system, platformer mechanics, treasure collection, and boss fight creation tools are much more advanced than our original design goals. For a tiny indie team with 2 programmers and 3 artists, we've built a very robust MMO platform with a vast amount of growth potential. We can't wait to kill you! (in The Yellow King)
