The Verdant Update

New Traits and New Events!
In this Paper Pirates update, we've added two brand new never-seen-before traits to the permanent roster of traits. We've also added two new events and two new trait events!
New Trait: The Gardener
The Gardener is the first of our two new traits. The Gardener has access to three plant pots, and they can choose which plant to tend each day that they don't play in. There are four different plants that The Gardener might grow, so each voyage they'll only have a selection of a few!

After a plant has been tended three times, it'll be fully grown, and will activate an ongoing effect that impacts the whole crew. From Saintly Sunflowers to Clingy Cacti, each plant is sure to turn the tide in the favour of one team or the either. Will The Gardener learn to work with their plants, or will they turn against them?
New Trait: The Undecided
The Undecided is the second of our new traits. The Undecided doesn't actually start with a trait! Each day, when The Undecided doesn't play in, they'll be offered a trait that's enabled for the voyage but which no other pirate currently has.

Should they chose to accept this trait, The Undecided will then become that trait for the remainder of the voyage. Alternatively, they can pass on it, and hope that another trait comes along another day.

Whether The Undecided is taking advantage of becoming a trait that the crew needs just at the right time, or, finding out which traits are not currently on board the ship, they're sure to add some spice to your voyage!
New Trait Events
Building on the six trait events that were added in the last update, we've added another two - this time for The Psychic and The Cursed.
The Psychic's Prediction
In The Psychic's Prediction, The Psychic takes a guess at which pirate they think will next go overboard. If they ace their prediction, showing off their psychic abilities, they'll be rewarded with a choice of either moving the ship one space closer to shore or throwing a treasure overboard.
The Cursed's Calamity
In The Cursed's Calamity, The Cursed will have an opportunity to potentially get thrown overboard. They'll be given a Magic Lamp-style event, but where the options are always Scurvy, Hot Potato, or Overpower. Which of these will give them the best chance of going overboard?
New Event: Reinvigoration
If the crew encounters a Reinvigoration event during a Trait game, any active trait that uses charges is sure to be celebrating - for they'll be gaining an extra charge for use during the remainder of the voyage!
New Event: Confession
When a Confession event happens, one pirate from the crew is randomly chosen to share their deepest secret - which team they're on - with another pirate. They can't opt out so they have to pick someone they trust. Whoever they choose will get to find out whether the confessing pirate is a ghost or a human... but beware! In Trait games, Traits like The Disguised will still impact the outcome of the event.
Seasonal Trait: The Spring Chicken
Joining Paper Pirates for the duration of Spring Sailing is the seasonal trait, The Spring Chicken! Play a trait game, and one of the crew may find themselves with this happy-go-lucky, seasonal appropriate trait.

Each day, when The Spring Chicken is not the Captain, they will spring forward one rank of the crew at the start of the event phase! This happens even if there's no other event taking place! What seems like a blessing may be a curse - watch out if you're a ghostly Spring Chicken and you're almost next to The Sensitive...
The Grand Spring Egg Hunt
Every day during Spring Sailing the crew will be challenged to an Egg Hunt by our very own Rabbot! They've hidden a number of eggs all throughout Paper Pirates for you to find - they could be in any of the menu screens, or even in-game! Big Birthday Bash!

Happy birthday, Paper Pirates!
It's Paper Pirates' fourth birthday, and were celebrating with the return of The Big Birthday Bash! Running from 28th February - 14th March, celebrate the anniversary of the game's launch with a festival of partying, and a whole host of anniversary goodies in Paper Pirates!
Seasonal Trait: The Magician
Joining Paper Pirates for the duration of The Big Birthday Bash is the seasonal trait, The Magician! Play a trait game during The Big Birthday Bash, and one of the crew may find themselves playing as The Magician.

When the entire crew have finished voting, but no pirate has gone overboard, The Magician will have the opportunity to cast a magic vote. This magic vote has three voting power, and can be cast for any pirate (other than The Magician themselves). The crew won't know who The Magician is, unless they can figure it out through deductive reasoning!

The magic vote still counts as voting for a pirate to go overboard, so if The Magician throws a human overboard they run the risk of becoming a ghost. Question is... who are they?
The Let Them Eat Cake Event!
Go on a sailing adventure during The Big Birthday Bash, and each day there is a chance you may encounter the Let Them Eat Cake event. The crew will divide up a huge birthday cake, taking the chance to blow out the candles one by one. It's believed that the last person who blows out a candle will get to make a wish... what will they wish for, and will their wish come true?!
Birthday Gift Bounties
Every day during The Big Birthday Bash the crew will receive a special birthday gift bounty! If you complete the assigned task, you can open a present, and inside you will find... a special cosmetic surprise! There are sixteen different cosmetics in total to collect, so make sure to collect your birthday gifts during the seasonal celebration!
Limited Time Costumes and Ship Parts
During The Big Birthday Bash, Sam Sherbot and Nat O'Bother have some new customisation options available to unlock in the Shop ship! If you buy a customisation option during The Big Birthday Bash, you can use it all year round - but the items will be disappearing from sale when the event is over, so dont delay and buy today!

Valentine Voyages!

Find romance on the seven seas with Valentine Voyages!
This February, were again celebrating with the Paper Pirates Seasonal Celebration, Valentine Voyages! Running from 7th February - 21st February, celebrate the season of love with a festival of romance, and a whole host of seasonal goodies in Paper Pirates!
Love Letter Bounties
What's this? The crew has received a mysterious letter, emblazoned with a heart motif? What could this mysterious love letter mean? It seems that there's a series of tasks for you to complete throughout Valentine Voyage's, and each one rewards you with... a special heart-shaped box!? What could be inside?
Seasonal Trait: The Lovers
During Valentine Voyages, you may encounter one of the seasonal traits, The Lovers!

The Lovers always appear as a pair, with two randomly chosen pirates from the crew both having the trait 'The Lovers'. When either pirate with The Lovers trait goes overboard, the other pirate will become Heartbroken, automatically going overboard the following day after the job completes. If a heartbroken pirate happens to go overboard before the end of the next day's job, they won't go overboard twice!

Be warned - if a pirates goes overboard due to heartbreak and they're a human, one randomly selected other pirate will become a ghost. Now that's spooky!
Seasonal Trait: The Admirer
During Valentine Voyages, you may encounter one of the seasonal traits, The Admirer!

During the first day, The Admirer must choose a target of their admiration from the crew. The Admirer's team will then immediately change to match the pirate they chose. Not only that, but every time The Admirer's target changes team, The Admirer's team will change too! That means if the target of their admiration becomes a ghost... Well, you know what you have to do!

The Admirer's team will no longer change through other means (if they're a human, they can't join the ghost team unless their target pirate is haunted), so watch out for any very tricky Admirer plays!
Limited Time Costumes and Ship Parts
During Valentine Voyages, Sam Sherbot and Nat O'Bother have some new customisation options available to unlock in the Shop ship! If you buy a customisation option during Valentine Voyages, you can use it all year round - but the items will be disappearing from sale when the event is over, so dont delay and buy today!

Additionally, during Valentine Voyages, pirates have access to two unique hats, available to everyone in voyages started during the event. Once the events over, the hats will disappear from your collection until next year, so be sure to wear them while you can!
The Cupids Arrow Event!
Go on a sailing adventure during Valentine Voyages, and each day there is a chance you may encounter the Cupids Arrow event. A random member of the crew is given the opportunity to fire Cupids arrow at another. Whoever they fire it at will have their role changed to match the person who fired the arrow - whether they were human, or ghost! Keep track of the arrow, and see if you can deduce whose role is what as you forge ahead on your voyage.
The "Love Letter" Event!
Go on a sailing adventure during Valentine Voyage, and each day there is a chance you may encounter the "Love Letter" event. A randomly chosen pirate must commit to sending a love letter to a pirate of their choice. What secrets will this letter reveal? The pirate may choose to either share their team, or their trait, with their lover. What information will they reveal, and more importantly, why did they choose to share that particular piece of information?
Valentine Celebrations in the Photo Booth
To celebrate Valentine Voyages, there is a limited-time Foil available in the Photo Booth, in the Captains Log. Take the opportunity to snap your favourite pirate templates, and share any pics you take!

Invite bots into your game during Valentine Voyages, and you may find some of the regular crew replaced with one or two super romantic guests, out to help you find love at sea! Theyll only join your games during Valentine Voyages, but these bots have their own personality and appearances for you to enjoy.

The Trait Events Update

Reworked Traits and New Events to spice up every voyage!
In this Paper Pirates update, we've reworked three traits to make them more desirable and give them more influence. There's also a whole host of new events for you to find to ensure that no two voyages are ever the same!
Reworked Trait: The Gifted
We love that The Gifted has a lot more control when they're the captain, and it's great how much control over the game being able to choose from three jobs gives you. However, not every Gifted finds their way to captaincy in every game, so we wanted to give The Gifted a little more to their toolkit to give them some oomph in games where they don't make it to the top of the ship.

The Gifted retains their ability to choose three jobs when they're the captain, but in addition, now has the ability to override the captain's job choice once per voyage with any job the crew are able to carry out.

Each day, The Gifted will see a large button on their device. If they press it, the captain's job choice will be interrupted, and they can choose any job which will happen that day. The captain still gets to choose whether they want to obey or disobey.

The Gifted can use their job choice strategically to make sure the job goes in their favour. Perhaps they want to definitely exclude, or even include, someone on the ghost team. Perhaps they want to work in partnership with an active trait to exclude them from a job - or stop them using their power by putting them in a job!
Reworked Trait: The Thief
When we made The Thief, we hoped it would be used as a vote deterrent so that ghosts had a way to try to avoid being voted overboard. The threat of losing a treasure versus the bonus of removing a ghost didn't have quite as much impact on games as we'd like, so we've reworked The Thief to make it more impactful.

When The Thief is chosen to play in for a job, they may choose to attempt a thievery. Once the job is resolved, the crew will be notified that there was an attempted thievery during the job. If The Thief is lucky, they'll steal a treasure from the crew and, as an added bonus, immediately turn into a ghost. If The Thief is unlucky, the crew will know an attempted thievery took place, but no treasure will be lost and The Thief will remain human.

The Thief can only attempt a thievery while they're on the human team, so once you identify your thief, you might want to think carefully about how you deal with them!
Reworked Trait: The Medium
We love that The Medium adds a level of private information sharing to a voyage, but, with untargeted messaging it was sometimes difficult to use it effectively.

We've changed the way The Medium works, such that on days when they don't play in they may now choose any individual pirate to send a private message to. After the day's job has resolved, The Medium's message will be sent to their chosen pirate and most importantly, that pirate will then have the chance to send a secret message back to The Medium.

This change empowers The Medium to become a master of secrets. Can they steal a secret from another pirate that gives them more power over the crew? Perhaps they want to share a secret about themselves with someone they trust?
New Event: Two of a Kind
The new Two of a Kind event is designed to help the crew out in a moment of need, giving them the opportunity to find out some more information. When a Two of a Kind event happens, a randomly chosen pirate is offered a choice of two pirates from the ship - including themselves but excluding the Stowaway.

The whole crew will see which two pirates were chosen, and then discover whether those two pirates are either both on the same team, or, on different teams.

This is an opportunity to find out a little information about two teams, or, if you're on the ghost team, a chance to spread some real deception amongst the crew. Even if you know two people are on the same team, can you trust them...?
New Event: Trap of the Tainted
Trap of the Tainted is a brand new event that only appears in Trait games, and can only happen when someone on the crew is The Tainted.

In the initial phase of Trap of the Tainted, the pirate with the Tainted trait chooses any three pirates - including themselves - to lure into a dark and dangerous dungeon.

Once three pirates have been chosen, every other member of the crew, one by one, must choose which of them they'd like to leave behind in the dungeon. Being left behind in the dungeon is effectively the same as going overboard, so that pirate will return to the ship as a new stowaway and, if they were human, one of the pirates that voted for them will join the ghost team.
New Trait Events
We've added six brand new events which can only appear in Trait games which are themed around some of the existing traits, allowing a pirate with that trait the opportunity to influence the crew's voyage. Look out for any of the following events:

  • The Berserker's Barrage
  • The Legion's Liaison
  • The Pure's Cure
  • The Sensitive's Shuffle
  • The Tainted's Touch
  • The Twins' Tricks

When one of these events shows up, you not only know that someone with that trait must be aboard the ship, you're also bound to experience some shenanigans sure to make you think twice about your fellow crewmates.
New Audience Event: Audience Influence
We've added a new audience event, Audience Influence! When an Audience Influence event happens, The Audience may collectively choose any pirate from the crew. The pirate who receives the most votes will become cursed, and will receive a small number of votes from the audience at the start of every voting round each day until a pirate is successfully voted overboard.

Soggy Hogmanay Community Bounty Achieved!

Happy new year, crew!

We've started 2024 off strongly, with a really impressive completion time on the Soggy Hogmanay Community Bounty. Because we collectively played 100 games of Paper Pirates in the first week of 2024, there's a unique reward that all pirates can claim in-game now!

Make sure to open Paper Pirates before Wednesday 24th January 2024 to claim the Dragon (Coat). Although the redemption ends in late January, if you open the box and claim your Dragon now, you can keep it forever!

Once you've claimed the Dragon, any pirates joining games you host will be able to equip the Dragon in the Coat outfit slot. The Dragon is super cute, comes in a range of colours, and although their wings are mighty they're not quite strong enough to prevent you from going overboard. They're only a little Dragon after all!

We hope everyone in the Paper Pirates community has a fantastic 2024, and we'll keep you updated with game updates and seasonal celebrations as the year rolls on.

Thanks as always for your support,
Iteration Games

Soggy Hogmanay!

Throughout January, were celebrating with the Paper Pirates Seasonal Celebration, Soggy Hogmanay! Running from 1st January - 21st January, celebrate the start of the New Year with a festival of glad tidings, and a whole host of seasonal goodies in Paper Pirates!
Soggy Hogmanay Community Bounty
To kick 2024 off in style, we're running a Community Bounty for the duration of Soggy Hogmanay. If we collectively complete 100 games of Paper Pirates between 1st January and 21st January 2024, every pirate who sails the seven seas will be able to claim a very special outfit item.

Once the bounty is complete, the outfit item will be available to claim for a limited time only, so make sure that you don't miss out!
Seasonal Trait: The Resolute
Returning to Soggy Hogmanay is the seasonal trait, The Resolute! Play a trait game during Soggy Hogmanay, and one of the crew may find themselves playing as The Resolute.

The Resolute must make a New Year's Resolution during the first day of the voyage. Their resolution asks them to pledge their allegiance to either the human or the ghost team. Whichever team they pick, they will instantly join - and they won't be able to become a member of the opposite team, no matter what happens, for the entirety of the remainder of the voyage!

Their choice is private to them, so make sure you don't get caught out by a sneaky Resolute pretending to have become a perma-human, when they might actually have just become The Tainted's best friend...
Resolution Bounty
Rumour has spread of a mysterious monster at sea... what could it be? Is it even real? During Soggy Hogmanay, if you scour the seven seas enough, you might catch a glimpse of a very special creature!

Check your bounty board after every voyage, because your time spent at sea might unveil a very special reward for you and your crew. You only have until the end of Soggy Hogmanay to complete the bounty, so make sure you make a new year's resolution to spend more time sailing than ever before!

During Soggy Hogmanay, Sam Sherbot and Nat O'Bother have some new customisation options available to unlock in the Shop Ship!
Prepare for Merriment and Mischief on the Yule Tides!
Throughout all of December, were celebrating, sharing, and gift giving, with Yule Tides! Running from 1st December - 31st December, celebrate Christmas with a festival of merriment and joy, and a whole host of seasonal goodies in Paper Pirates!
New Permanent Event: Majority Rule
With this year's Yule Tides comes the addition of a brand new, all-year-round event, Majority Rule. When Majority Rule triggers, the voting rules will change until a pirate next goes overboard. Every pirate's base voting power will be set to one, and the voting threshold is removed. At the end of the day, the pirate with the most votes goes overboard - even if that's only one vote!
Seasonal Trait: The Gift Giver
The special seasonal trait for Yule Tides is The Gift Giver! Play a trait game during Yule Tides and one of the pirates may find themselves playing as The Gift Giver.

The Gift Giver is offered a present to gift to a pirate of their choice on every day when they don't play in. There are a range of different gifts, but which one you get to give is random each day! You can only give three gifts on each voyage - and to make things even more tricky, each pirate can only receive a gift once.

Will you get the gifts you need to sail to success? Or will you accidentally end up giving away a victory to the ghosts.
Advent Bounties
During the Christmas season, the bounty board is celebrating each and every day that passes! Each day throughout December, youll receive a special Advent Bounty, with a challenge for you to complete! If you complete an advent bounty, you'll be rewarded with a special Paper Pirates Present! There are eleven items for you to discover!

The advent bounties are time-limited, so you have to complete them on the day you get them - but dont worry if you dont, therell be a new one waiting for you tomorrow!
A Special Christmas Present
There's a special Christmas bounty, available to every good pirate! All you need to do to complete it is have five Snowball Fights during Yule Tides.

Completing the bounty will unlock a special outfit reward for all pirates to use permanently!
Limited Time Costumes
During Yule Tides, Sam Sherbot and Nat O'Bother have some new customisation options available to unlock in the Shop Ship! If you buy a customisation option during Yule Tides, you can use it all year round - but the items will be disappearing from sale when the event is over, so dont delay and buy today!

While sailing on the even seas during Yule Tides, you might find the crew getting a little rowdy with all the partying and merriment! Encounter the Cracking Crackers event, and two members of your crew will decide to pull a giant size festive cracker.

Hit the button on your device more times than your opponent to claim the bigger half of the cracker - and save yourself from certain doom, as the loser will be flung overboard from the force of the cracker's explosion! Watch out though, if the losing pirate was a human, the one walking away with the bigger piece will now be a ghost...
Seasonal Event: Snowball Fight!
Go on a sailing adventure during Yule Tides, and each day there is a chance it may begin to snow giving the crew the opportunity to partake in a little festive fun - a traditional snowball fight! When Snowball Fight is triggered, each member of the crew must choose who to pelt with a snowball.

The pirate who receives the most snowballs will be thrown overboard! Who will you throw your snowball at? When they go overboard, if theyre a human, one of the people who threw the snowball will become a ghost so choose wisely!
Seasonal Event: Naughty or Nice?
During your Yule Tides sailing adventures, you may encounter the Naughty or Nice event during the event phase of the game. In Naughty or Nice, one member of the crew must offer a gift to another. Question is - has the receiver been naughty, or nice?

The present-giver must decide, with a host of fun positive outcomes for nice, and some meaner tricks for naughty. When the receiver is given the gift, they can choose whether to open it, or discard it. Do you think your crewmate has sent you something nice, or are they a ghost, hoping to catch you out? Thats all part of festive deception!
Yule Tidings come to the Photo Booth
To celebrate the season, there are a small number of limited-time Foils and Backgrounds available in the Photo Booth, in the Captains Log. Take the opportunity to snap your favourite pirate templates with a little festive frivolity, and dont forget to share any pics you take!
Yule Tides Bots
Through early November, were honouring the spirits of the dead with our most spiritual seasonal event, Da de Muertos running from 1st November - 14th November!
Seasonal Trait: The Spiritualist
Our new seasonal trait for Da de Muertos is The Spiritualist. On days when The Spiritualist does not play in, they may decorate a sugar skull offering using any pattern of their choice.

The pattern of the offering will then dictate how the spirits decide to reward The Spiritualist. Each different pattern leads to a different event, so the more times you're The Spiritualist and the more attention you pay, the more you can control the response of the spirits!

Play Paper Pirates during Da de Muertos and you can make an offering to the spirits once per day! Play a game each day, and after your voyage you'll receive a gift from the bounty board!

Oktoberfest on the Ocean!
Grab a sausage and celebrate Oktoberfest!
As we see out September, were celebrating the ninth Paper Pirates Seasonal Celebration, Oktoberfest on the Ocean! Running from 18th to 30th September, celebrate the end of the season with a shindig dedicated to pretzels, sausages, chicken dancing and more, with a whole host of seasonal goodies in Paper Pirates!
Seasonal Trait: The Brewmaster
The Brewmaster is here, and they're ready to get the party started! When you have a Brewmaster aboard, they'll be asked to set the vibe of the ship during the first day. Whichever vibe they choose will mix up the Paper Pirates voting rules!

There are a total of four vibes The Brewmaster can pick for the ship:

  • Aggressive Vibes - Grants each pirate one additional voting power
  • Chaotic Vibes - Instead of voting from Stowaway to Captain, the crew will vote in a randomised order each day
  • Determined Vibes - Removes the crew's ability to pass their vote
  • Energetic Vibes - If nobody has gone overboard after the Captain has voted, a second round of voting begins. Votes from the previous round carry forward!

Whichever vibe they pick will stay in effect for the rest of the voyage. However, each day The Brewmaster doesn't play in, they can choose to change up the vibe, and bring a new mood to the party. How will having The Brewmaster aboard change the way your crew votes people over?
The band is here!
To help get the party started, a collection of instruments brand new for Oktoberfest 2023 will be available at Sam Sherbot's Outfit Shop aboard the Ship Shop for the duration of Oktoberfest on the Ocean. Instruments can be worn by pirates in either the Hand or the Belt outfit slots, depending on the instrument type, and there's enough for everyone on even the biggest crews to grab a different instrument!

The full list of instruments available is:
The Biggest Bratwurst Event!
Go on a sailing adventure during Oktoberfest on the Ocean, and any day when theres a successful job there is a chance you may encounter the Biggest Bratwurst event! The pirates stop for a cook-out, each grabbing a sausage from the grill. Some of the sausages are much bigger than the others though, and everyone knows a pirate needs a full stomach to carry out the most important duties on the ship. The bigger your meal, the higher your rank on the ship! So watch out, if you pull a chipolata, you might end up as Stowaway!

The Biggest Bratwurst event is sure to mix things up amongst the crew, changing whos next to each other and therefore whos playing in for different groups of jobs together. Not only that, but if youre playing a trait game, you might want to be extra careful of who ends up next to The Sensitive!
Oktoberfest on the Ocean Bots
Invite bots into your game during Oktoberfest on the Ocean, and you may encounter any of four unique bots! Look out for Chicken Bot, Hans Botmann, Ida Botmann and Bot Dog, all of whom are eager to board your ship and throw you overboard! History and Mystery Update

Recap your voyage in more detail with the History and Mystery Update!
Jump aboard Paper Pirates to explore the History and Mystery Update, featuring a refreshed game history feature, two new traits, a new event, and more!
New and Improved Game History
Our end-of-game recap screen, the Game History, was built for a simpler time when pirates didn't have things like traits. Although it's grown with us over time, it was starting to fall behind in providing a transparent recap of everything that happened in the game. So, we rebuilt it!

The new Game History includes more precise details, such as letting you know who voted for a Mutiny, as well as better handling of trait-influenced team changes and clearer indicators of when team changes happen.

Each day, you can review the job and who played in, see a summary of the events that took place, and check the outcome of voting. If you want to dig a little deeper, the details panel on the right will walk you through the day in detail.

You can also check who voted for who, who became a ghost, and what the probabilities were, in the Voting Chart!

Last but not least, there's a bigger, bolder, and better final page in the Game History that more clearly indicates who on the crew were on the winning team. Open up the chart here and you can see exactly how your game played out over time!

We love the new Game History and hope that it will help you better dissect your games. This was a huge project given the variety of voyages, and there might be the odd event or outcome that's missing text. We'll be keeping our eye out and patching these up as we go!
New Trait: The Silent
One of two new traits for the History and Mystery Update is The Silent!

The Silent's votes are always secret. That means it will always appear as if they passed their vote, even if they didn't. Should The Silent cast enough votes to throw someone overboard, the voting will still end immediately. If you're The Silent and want to stay hidden, make sure you're casting votes where you won't be exposed.

And if you're not The Silent? Be wary. Joke votes sink boats! And with The Silent on board, you can never know exactly who might have been ghosted when a human goes overboard...
New Trait: The Gambler
Another new trait for the History and Mystery Update is The Gambler!

On days when they don't play in, The Gambler is offered two events. One of these will have a high chance of happening, and one of them will have a low chance of happening. Whether The Gambler is a ghost or a human, the high-chance event will normally be good for their team, while the low-chance event will be bad for their team.

Are you willing to take a risk on a good event knowing what bad things might happen? Can you get away with risking it all and claiming that your events were the other way round?

Whether on the ghost team or the human team, The Gambler is sure to have you questioning whether you feel lucky!
New Event: Counting the Treasure
Our new event for the History and Mystery update is Counting the Treasure!

In a Counting the Treasure event, one pirate will be randomly selected to take on responsibility for counting the treasure. But never fear, they'll have help from three other pirates! Those three pirates will all see a number of coins on their device: Either 1, 2, or 3 coins. Their job is to tell the counting pirate how many coins they can see, so the counting pirate can add them up and report the total on their device.

If you count correctly - amazing! The crew get another treasure! However, if you get it wrong, in the confusion it seems one of your current treasure will be whisked away before you can know it.

How much do you trust the three pirates chosen to help count the treasure? If it all goes wrong, who will you blame...?

Announcing An Elaborate History of Chess!

We are thrilled to announce the next game from Iteration Games, An Elaborate History of Chess!

[previewyoutube=rztp0qf-4So;full][/previewyoutube]

An Elaborate History of Chess is a blend of real-time and turn-based strategy, exploring the history of the popular board game, Chess. Start with just one lowly pawn to begin building your village, and work your way up to an entire kingdom. Keep your farms running like clockwork to ensure a food supply for your pieces, and see how far you can spread your influence.

As your kingdom flourishes, you'll attract all sorts of wildlife and monsters looking to checkmate your best warriors and take your wheat for themselves. Don't forget to build your defences, set up your supply chains, and of course, protect the king!

When you're feeling brave it's time to turn your attention to the dungeons. You'll need to prepare an adventuring party ready to face the horrors and puzzles that lie in wait in the time-frozen dungeons, where you'll need to show your mastery of chess strategy to overcome the myriad challenges that lie await and steal the very best treasures.

Do you have what it takes to become grandmaster of all you see, or will you find your best gambits just don't pay off?

Spring Sailing!
Go Egg Hunting on the Seven Seas with Spring Sailing!
Across March and April, were celebrating with the Paper Pirates Seasonal Celebration, Spring Sailing! Running from 15th March - 12th April, celebrate the season of spring with a festival of eggs, bunnies, and a whole host of seasonal goodies in Paper Pirates!

Find your quota each day, and you'll be able to open a special Spring Sailing surprise.

There's three outfits, two returning outfits and one brand new, for a combined total of sixteen items, to collect through The Grand Spring Egg Hunt. Make sure to check for eggs every day, and get ready to dress up!
Limited Time Costumes
During Spring Sailing, Sam Sherbot and Nat O'Bother have some new customisation options available to unlock in the Shop Ship! The eggs all contain events, and whichever egg they choose will instantly trigger that event! All the other pirates on the boat will get a clue, showing them a picture of an egg, and a description of the event that will happen. Make sure you communicate to the egg hunter to let them know what might happen for each egg - but watch out for the ghosts, who might give you a bad description, or tell you fibs about the event squirreled away inside!
Spring Celebrations in the Photo Booth
To celebrate Spring Sailing, there are two limited-time Foils available in the Photo Booth, in the Captains Log. Take the opportunity to snap your favourite pirate templates, and share any pics you take!

All Together Update

Set Sail with Random Players with the All Together Update!
Jump aboard Paper Pirates to explore the All Together Update, featuring a new trait, public listing for games and more!
Public Games
When creating a Paper Pirates lobby, you now have the option of advertising your game publicly. Tick the "Public Games" tick box from the game customisation screen, and your lobby will be advertised for anyone to join via Spectator mode. Players joining public games will still have to join via a web browser on a connected device, but public games offer a way to recruit a crew even when playing solo!

Remember, you can always mute or kick a pirate who joins your game and misbehaves to stop them contributing to the game any further. To do so, just click on a pirate in-game and choose the mute or kick option as appropriate. You can even do this from a lobby!

If you're looking to find more pirates to join your games, you're always welcome to join the Paper Pirates Discord server where you can advertise your games for anyone to join.
Mid-Game Spectating
To enhance the spectating experience, we've tightened up a few screws and enabled spectating mid-game. Whenever you join, you will have to wait for the start of the next day, but then your spectated game will be perfectly in sync with the host! You'll still get all the coins for the whole voyage, but note that your Round History will only display days for which you were already spectating.
New Trait: The Legion
Our new trait for the All Together Update is The Legion!

The Legion is a trait that is always assigned to a ghost at the start of a game, just like The Tainted. Whenever the Legion would become a ghost while a ghost, an extra ghost joins their collection. If they would become a human, one of the ghosts leaves their collection, but they remain a ghost. The only way to cleanse The Legion and return them to humanity is to clear their entire ghost collection!

The Legion always starts the game with one extra ghost in their collection, so at the very least you'll need to get them overboard twice, or give them two exorcisms, before they turn human. Never trust when you think someone is a human, because they could be The Legion!
New Trait: The Sleuth
As a reward for finding clues during Steam Mystery Fest, the collective efforts of pirates across the entire ocean unlocked a new Trait, The Sleuth! Although The Sleuth has been in the game for a few weeks now, we haven't formally introduced them!

The Sleuth has the power to investigate a pirate to see whether they have ever disobeyed at any point in the voyage so far. They won't know when they disobeyed, but this is still a very useful ability! In order to investigate a pirate, The Sleuth must use up a lead. Leads are earned every day that there are at least two disobeys in a job - so the more ghosts you have, the more likely your Sleuth is to find leads!

Additionally, The Sleuth always starts the game with one lead, so even if the ghosts are being on their best behaviour, they might not be able to hide from The Sleuth for long!
New Event: Disagreement
During a Disagreement event, two pirates from the centre of the ship have a falling out and decide to move away from each other. Each pirate will move as far away as they can, taking on the ranks of second-in-command and Cabin Boy.
New Event: Crew's Revenge
During a Crew's Revenge event, the entire crew will have the opportunity to take revenge on the most bloodthirsty pirate. If you've successfully thrown the most pirates overboard, you might find yourself facing a very angry crew!

The Crew's Revenge event works like the Mutiny event, so if more than half of the crew vote to take revenge, the bloodthirstiest pirate will get thrown overboard. If they were a human, then any of the pirates that agreed to get revenge could become a ghost!
Join the Paper Pirates Community
As always, dont forget that you can join us every Saturday at 8pm GMT on Twitch for our weekly dev stream, or pop by our YouTube channel to see Lets Plays of Paper Pirates, How To videos and more! Or if youre looking for a crew to set sail with make sure to join our Discord!

Big Birthday Bash!

Happy birthday, Paper Pirates!
It's Paper Pirates' third birthday, and were celebrating with the return of The Big Birthday Bash!

There are twelve different cosmetics in total to collect, so make sure to collect your birthday gifts during the seasonal celebration!

The full list of outfit items available during The Big Birthday Bash is:
Outfit Shop
• Faces - Balloon
  • Belt - Cutlass (Balloon)

  • Shirts - Balloon
  • Legs - Tutu (Rainbow)
  • Legs - Balloon
  • Feet - Balloon
Ship Shop
• Hulls - Cake Hull
  • Masts - Cake

Additionally, during The Big Birthday Bash, pirates have access to a unique anniversary hat, available to everyone in voyages started during the event. Once the events over, the hat will disappear from your collection until next year, so be sure to wear it while you can!
Developer Bots Jump Aboard
Invite bots into your game during The Big Birthday Bash, and you may find some of the regular crew replaced with one or three bots that mimic the Iteration Games crew! Theyll only join your games during The Big Birthday Bash, but these bots have their own personality and appearances modelled after the Paper Pirates developers.

It's the Steam Mystery Fest...

There's a thief in our midst!
It's time for the Steam Mystery Fest celebration, and it seems the Paper Pirates crew have a mystery of their very own to solve. Someone's swiped all the treasure, and we don't know who! Not to panic though, The Captain has been in touch with world-famous detective, Tabotha Tabs, and she's accepted the challenge of coming aboard and figuring out exactly whodunnit. The Steam Mystery Fest runs from Monday 20th - Monday 27th February, so we need to solve the mystery before it ends!
There's a mystery to be solved!
Set sail every day during the Steam Mystery Fest, and you'll find a clue. These clues will surely help you to track down the guilty party. Not only that, if all the Paper Pirate crews on the seven seas work together, there's bound to be a special reward for everyone!
Huge Paper Pirates discount!
During the Mystery Fest, we want everyone to get involved in finding clues and solving the mystery. If you've had your eye on Paper Pirates for a while, or you've got friends looking to jump aboard, you'll be able to pick the game up for 75% off during the entire celebration!

Keep track of the arrow, and see if you can deduce whose role is what as you forge ahead on your voyage.
The "Love Letter" Event!
Go on a sailing adventure during Valentine Voyage, and each day there is a chance you may encounter the "Love Letter" event. A randomly chosen pirate must commit to sending a love letter to a pirate of their choice. What secrets will this letter reveal? Hit the button on your device more times than your opponent to claim the bigger half of the cracker - and save yourself from certain doom, as the loser will be flung overboard from the force of the cracker's explosion!
Invite some bots into your game during Yule Tides, and you may find some of the regular crew replaced with some particularly festive bots, out to celebrate Christmas! Theyll only join your games during Yule Tides, but each has their own personality and appearance for you to enjoy.

The Festive Feast!
What are you thankful for during the Festive Feast Event?
Through the second half of November, were taking some time to be thankful in our most delicious seasonal event, The Festive Feast! Running from 16th November - 30th November, celebrate the harvest season with a festival of feasting and thankfulness and a whole host of seasonal goodies in Paper Pirates!
Seasonal Trait: The Quarterback
Our new seasonal trait for The Festive Feast is The Quarterback! The Quarterback is gifted with an exploding football, and knows exactly how many days the football will take to explode.

They may pass the ball to any other pirate, who then has the chance to either pass it on to another pirate or keep hold of it in the pre-event phase of the next football. The Quarterback will always know exactly how many days there are until the football explodes, throwing the pirate currently holding it overboard. Can you trust The Quarterback's timings, or will you find yourself blown up by their lies?
Make a Wish Every Day
Play Paper Pirates during The Festive Feast and you can make a festive wish once per day! Play at least one game, and after your voyage you'll receive a gift from the bounty board!

Da de Muertos - Day of the Dead Event!

Honour the Spirits of the Dead during Da de Muertos!

Make an Offering Every Day
Play Paper Pirates during Da de Muertos and you can make an offering to the spirits once per day! Play a game each day, and after your voyage you'll receive a gift from the bounty board!

There are four candle-themed outfit pieces for you to collect from the daily quests, so make sure to play a game of Paper Pirates four times before the celebration ends on the 14th November!

During Da de Muertos, Sam Sherbot and Nat OBother have some new customisation options available to unlock in the Shop Ship! Go on a sailing adventure during Da de Muertos, and your crew will have the chance to decorate an offering to honour the spirits that have passed! Three randomly chosen pirates will each choose a pattern for a region of the sugar skull, and depending on the particular design that's chosen, the spirits will reward you in a different way.

Berserker Update

Channel your rage as The Berseker!
Jump aboard Paper Pirates to explore the Berserker Update, featuring a new trait and some QoL improvements throughout!
New Trait: The Berserker
Our new trait for the Berserker Update is The Berserker!

The Berserker is the master of channelling their rage, but sometimes they just just have to let it all out! Each time The Berserker passes their vote, they will gain an additional one voting power. This keeps increasing each time they pass their vote! When they unleash their rage, their bonus voting power reduces to zero, and it can be built up again.

But beware, lest you be overcome by your rage! If The Berserker's normal voting power plus their bonus voting power is greater than or equal to the vote threshold, they will lose their ability to pass their vote. This means they must throw someone overboard - no questions asked!

Make sure that you manage your rage carefully, lest you accidentally end up throwing a human overboard all on your own and becoming a ghost...
More Animated Votes
We've given the black spots used during a voting a little bit more energy! They've now got a nice animation that makes it clearer how many votes a pirate is casting, and also includes a better visual display of how many votes each pirate cast should a pirate go overboard.

It now feels much more exciting to vote for someone, but be careful who you vote for because you might be making more ghosts on the ship!
Outfit Shop Quality of Life Improvements
Sam Sherbot is always hard at work to help make shopping at the Outfit Shop a dream. They've introduced two new features to help you browse, try on and shop with maximum comfort!
Buy Whole Sets
Complimenting the Buy Whole Outfit button added in 3.5, Sam now advertises whole sets for sale. This might be all the parts to dress up as your favourite animal, or many other costumes where different outfit parts just all work together! Pick a whole outfit, and buy all the pieces in one go using the Buy Whole Outfit button. Spending your hard earn coins has never been so easy!
Try on Hats
Sometimes, to complete the perfect outfit, you need the perfect hat. Sam's giving you the opportunity to browse your hat collection, and you can now try on hats in the Outfit Shop! You have to have unlocked a hat for it to appear in the list, but once you do, you can try it on with all the other outfit parts. It'll also be added to your outfit code, so you can dress a pirate up completely without ever even opening the lobby!

As always, dont forget that you can join us every Saturday at 8pm BST on Twitch for our weekly dev stream, or pop by our YouTube channel to see Lets Plays of Paper Pirates, How To videos and more! Or if youre looking for a crew to set sail with make sure to join our Discord!

Protection and Peril Update

It's Perilous on the High Seas!
Jump aboard Paper Pirates to explore the Protection and Peril Update, full of new features to spice up your voyages!
New Trait: The Reaper
Our first new trait for the Protection and Peril Update is The Reaper!

Whenever any other pirate goes overboard, The Reaper harvests a soul, collecting them for nefarious deeds. When The Reaper does not play in, they can spend the souls they've harvested to form one of several pacts, influencing the game in a powerful way.

Each voyage, the four pacts The Reaper can enact are chosen randomly, so it's never quite the same twice in a row! Will you use the power of The Reaper for good, or for evil?
New Trait: The Protector
Our second new trait for the Protection and Peril Update is The Protector!

During Day One, The Protector must choose any other pirate to protect. No matter how many votes the protected pirate receives during voting, they will not be thrown overboard. The pirate they choose to protect is a secret until the point at which they would have gone overboard, when the pirate will display a shield and become immune to further votes that round!

On days when they don't play in, The Protector may choose to change which pirate they're protecting. Who will The Protector choose to protect, and will they make sure they change their mind in time?
Empowering the Audience!
Alongside the new traits, we're giving the audience more power! We've added over ten new events, which will only appear when you have an audience watching your game. Each event allows the audience to influence the game in some important way!

When the audience is empowered, they can do things like choose a new captain, turn someone into a ghost, swap two pirate's teams, and much more. Who's watching your game? Do you trust them to help the humans, or are they sneaky ghosties?

You can customise how often an empowered audience event happens in your games, including turning them off completely, in the custom game menu under the Events tab.
Two New Events: Disarray & Equality
We're welcoming two new regular events to Paper Pirates - Disarray and Equality.

When the Disarray event happens, the crew become disoriented and confused, and an ongoing effect triggers which shuffles the order of voting randomly each day! This can really mess with the natural order of voting, so watch carefully who votes first!

When the Equality event happens, the crew commit to equality for all pirates. In terms of voting, this means that all pirates will have the same number of votes! This empowers the stowaway, and weakens the Captain, and can easily change up who votes for who.

Both Disarray and Equality last from when the event triggers until the next time a pirate is voted overboard.
Shop Enhancements
Sam Sherbot and Nat O'Bother have invested in some upgrades for their shops, and added some new features and functionality!

The Outfit Shop has been upgraded with the following new features:

  • Categories with newly added items now have a 'new' label, and individual items in categories will also tell you that they've recently been added to the shop.
  • More accurately customise the model in the shop, including options to try on different left and right hands and feet.
  • Create outfits in the Outfit Shop, and copy the Outfit Code directly from the shop ready for use in the in-game lobby! This also means you can create Outfit Codes using items you haven't bought yourself yet.
  • Once you've finished dressing up the pirate model in the Outfit Shop, there's a new option to buy all the items you don't own in one go. Customise a whole look, and buy it in one fell swoop for the ultimate convenient shopping experience!

The Ship Shop has been upgraded, and Nat O'Bother will now offer regular sales on their ship parts. The items on sale change once every week, so if you see something on sale that you can't quite afford, there's still time to save up and buy, buy, buy!
More Customisation Options!
Sam Sherbot has been sailing far and wide to bring you the latest pirate fashions! Become a wolf or an elephant, turn your pirate into an orc, and more with a new range of outfit shop items available for purchase!

Grab Limited Time Customisation Options
During Oktoberfest on the Ocean, Sam Sherbot and Nat OBother have some new customisation options available to unlock in the Shop Ship! If you buy a customisation option during Oktoberfest on the Ocean, you can use it all year round - but the items will be disappearing from sale when the event is over, so dont delay and buy today!

These bots will only join your games during Oktoberfest on the Ocean, so take the chance to meet them now before they chicken dance away for the rest of the year!

Rise of the Kraken

The Kraken Awakens!
You thought the Kraken wouldn't notice all the times you fished up a squid on the island, huh? Well you were wrong! The Kraken is angry and looking for revenge!
The Kraken Rises
The Kraken Rises is our second adventure event, and like The Island Adventure, it has a whole host of minigames and challenges for pirates to encounter! As the Kraken emerges from the sea, you'll have the chance to fight it in different ways, before confronting it for a final showdown.

The Kraken has five weaknesses for you to exploit, and if you successfully wound the Kraken it'll be much weaker in the final battle. However, each weakness comes with good and bad things that can happen for the crew, so be careful and choose where to aim your harpoons wisely!

Once you've had your shot at wounding the Kraken, it will bear down on the ship ready for a final battle. All of the crew need to work together to fight the Kraken off! And whether you're victorious, or suffer defeat at the tentacles of the Kraken, the effects of the battle will surely be felt for the next few days of your voyage.

New Customisation Options!
Sam Sherbot has gotten themselves new items for sale in the Outfit Shop aboard the Shop Ship, amongst them are a full Kraken outfit and the brand new Pride collection!

Not wanting to be outdone, Nat O'Bother also has a few new pieces in the Ship Shop aboard the Shop Ship. Definitely check out the Rainbow Hull and Rainbow Generator!

New Achievements
With the rising of the Kraken come new achievements, and as always, new hats. If you can achieve any of the following, you'll have some brand new pirate headwear to ensure you're definitely talk of the town!

  • Oceanographer - Explore all the different ways to wound the Kraken during the The Kraken Rises event
  • Feast for the Kraken - Hide the entire crew in the same place during the The Kraken's Beak event
  • Apple of my Eye - Successfully blind the Kraken in the The Kraken's Eye event without making any mistakes
  • Potion Explosion - As The Witch, use a Potion of Overboarding to throw yourself overboard
  • Buzz Off - Encounter the Wasp Nest event twenty-five times

Five new traits!
As the Kraken rises out of the ocean, so too do five new traits for the crew! As always, these traits can be assigned to humans or ghosts, so get ready for yer mateys to cause you a whole world of trouble!
New Trait: The Contrarian
The Contrarian is, for all intents and purposes, contrary. Whenever they would become a human, they instead become a ghost. Whenever they would become a ghost, they instead become a human! And yes, this includes when they go overboard - so they'll always arrive back on the ship as a ghost stowaway...
New Trait: The Bodyswapper
On days when The Bodyswapper does not play in, they can choose any other pirate. During the pre-event phase, the Bodyswapper will trade teams with their selected pirate. It's freaky! Will the Bodyswapper try to swap with a human, or a ghost? Can you keep track of who's who?
New Trait: The Brawler
On days when The Brawler does not play in, they can challenge any other pirate to a brawl. The brawl plays out in the pre-event phase, with the traditional pirate brawling technique of rock-paper-scissors. If The Brawler wins the brawl, they'll steal their opponent's rank on the ship!
New Trait: The Beast
Each and every time The Beast goes overboard, whether that's through an event or voting, their voting power increases by two. It keeps going up every time they're thrown overboard too, so be careful! Throwing The Beast overboard too many times means they have some big voting power...
New Trait: The Medium
On days when The Medium does not play in, they can write a hidden message that will be revealed only to the ghosts in the pre-event phase. Whether the Medium is a human or a ghost, what information will they reveal and how will they coordinate, or trick, the ghosts?
New Trait Icons
To help pirates familiarise themselves with the different traits, we've also added a unique icon for each and every trait. You can check these out in the Captain's Log, or you can be surprised by each trait icon as you discover it in your black spot!

Pirate Booty!
Just because your game's over doesn't mean the fun is! Once all the humans and ghosts have been uncovered, you'll now have the chance to see the booty you've collected on your voyage. There are various ways that you can earn coins in-game, and the Booty Board will help you to better understand where your coins from. Additionally, we've made it slightly easier to earn coins across the game. More cool outfits for everyone!

The Booty Board also awards three accolades to members of the crew. Who will be celebrating? It might be an opportunity to celebrate a pirate who captained the ship to victory, or someone who changed teams most frequently!

We're Going on an Adventure!
With the introduction of a second adventure event, we're also adding a new event that can pop up giving pirates the option to pick which adventure they want to go on. Every single member of the crew gets a say, and the destination is decided by The Wheel of Fate (The Compass of Fate's older sibling). Will you set sail for the island, or can you see the beastly Kraken on the horizon?

Limiting Some Traits to Certain Crew Sizes
To promote game balance, and to make sure that everyone has a fun time when playing Trait games, we've set player limits for a few of the traits. In most cases, this means that you need a certain number of pirates in a game before a trait will appear. You can see how big the crew needs to be on the game customisation screen, and once your game starts the Trait Guide on each player's device will remove any traits that didn't make it into the game.

Take Photos of your Ship
When customising your ship at the Ship Shop, we've added a little camera button that gives you a nice full screen view of your ship with a fancy name placard. This is great way to share photos of your different ships, and show off all the cool things you've bought!

Pre-event Information in the Captain's Log
Pre-events are those events that happen before the main event. The little ones that come into play when you use an active trait for example. To help you keep track, we've added these to the Captain's Log - and most importantly - they're listed in the order they'll happen each day. Confused about whether The Witch or The Wishful gets to use their power first? The Captain's Log tells all!

Improved Event Information on your Device
We've all done it. The event is The Spy. It's you. You choose someone. You forget to look whether they're human or ghost, and that information is lost to the seas. Not anymore! Information revealed during events will now be displayed in a pop-up, that won't go away until you're ready. If you close the popup by accident, or just need a recap, your game log will now keep a personalised history of any information revealed to you in events. Handy!

The Bots are Getting Smarter
We've made some improvements when playing with bots in trait games, and in particular, we've taught them how to use a number of different traits. Bots could already activate the traits of The Wishful and The Diligent, but bots can now also activate The Witch, The Shapeshifter, The Brawler, The Meddler and The Bodyswapper!
A few other bits and pieces...
• When visiting the Captain's Log to check out the bios for the various bots, we've added pronouns for each.
  • When in the lobby, you can use the new 'Add Bot' button to add a bot directly to your lobby. Super useful if you're looking for a particular bot to join your game!

Big Birthday Bash!

Happy birthday, Paper Pirates!
It's Paper Pirates' second birthday, and were celebrating with a new Paper Pirates Seasonal Celebration, The Big Birthday Bash!

This magic vote has two voting power, and can be cast for any pirate (other than The Magician themselves).

There are eight different cosmetics in total to collect, so make sure to collect your birthday gifts during the seasonal celebration!

The full list of outfit items available during The Big Birthday Bash is:

  • Headwear - Hairpin (Star)
  • Headwear - Pendant (Star)

Valentine Voyages!

Find romance on the seven seas with Valentine Voyages!
This February, were celebrating with the Paper Pirates Seasonal Celebration, Valentine Voyages! Running from 7th February - 21st February, celebrate the season of love with a festival of romance, and a whole host of seasonal goodies in Paper Pirates!
Reworked Trait: The Cursed
We wanted to give a little extra oomph to playing as The Cursed, and at the same time make it so that the ghosts have a few more options when they're corned by a cunning spy. To give The Cursed more playstyles, we've added to their trait a permanent disguise; Whenever their team is revealed through traits or events, they'll always show as if they're a ghost even when they're human.

When playing a Trait Game, you might always want to think twice before throwing someone overboard... Are they really The Tainted or could they be The Cursed in disguise?!
Seasonal Trait: The Admirer
New to Valentine Voyages 2022 is the seasonal trait, The Admirer! Play a trait game during Valentine Voyages, and one of the crew may find themselves playing as The Admirer.

In the first day, The Admirer must choose a target of their admiration from the crew.

What would be inside?
Valentine Celebrations in the Photo Booth
Soggy Hogmanay!
Ring in the New Year on the Seven Seas with Soggy Hogmanay!
Throughout January, were celebrating with the Paper Pirates Seasonal Celebration, Soggy Hogmanay! Running from 1st January - 21st January, celebrate the start of the New Year with a festival of glad tidings, and a whole host of seasonal goodies in Paper Pirates!
Reworked Trait: The Diligent
In preparation for the New Year, but staying all year round, is a revised version of The Diligent. We've moved The Diligent to an active trait but one that only activates when you are chosen to play in! When participating in a job, The Diligent will be asked - after choosing whether to obey or disobey - if they want to work a little harder. If they do, the outcome of the day's job will be doubled. That means if it's a success, the crew move two spaces to shore, but if it's a failure, two treasures will go overboard!

The newly revised Diligent also activates when you're the Captain, so be very careful of a Ghost Captain Diligent who might be making a mad rush to get all your treasure overboard at the last second!
Seasonal Trait: The Resolute
New to Soggy Hogmanay 2021 is the seasonal trait, The Resolute!

Limited Time Costumes
During Soggy Hogmanay, Sam Sherbot and Nat O'Bother have some new customisation options available to unlock in the Shop Ship!
The Fastest First Foot Event!
Go on a sailing adventure during Soggy Hogmanay, and each day there is a chance you may encounter the Fastest First Foot event, inspired by the Hogmanay tradition of First Footing. As the crew return from an adventure on a deserted treasure island, they race to see who has the honour of first footing the pirate ship. Those pirates who make it back first are granted good fortune for the coming voyage - and will be given a higher rank on the ship accordingly! Have your devices at the ready and press a button as soon as it appears, and any pirate has the chance of seizing the rank of captain!
Resolution Bounty
To help ring in the New Year, and start as you mean to go on, the bounty board is offering you a New Years Resolution Bounty! Throughout the duration of Soggy Hogmanay, you will have one giant bounty to complete! If you complete that one bounty over the course of the celebration, you will receive a truly staggering number of coins in celebration and youll be well on the way to a prosperous 2022. Its just too good to miss!
Hogmanay Celebrations in the Photo Booth
To celebrate the arrival of the new year, there are a small number of limited-time Foils and Backgrounds available in the Photo Booth, in the Captains Log. Take the opportunity to snap your favourite pirate templates, and share any pics you take!

3.3.3 Patch

The Witch - promoted to a permanent Trait!
We've had an outpouring of love for our Haunted Seas seasonal trait, The Witch, from all areas of the Paper Pirates community. So much so that we've made the decision to make The Witch a permanent trait, available all year round!

New content for Da de Muertos
We've made some additions to our Day of the Dead seasonal celebration, full details can be found in the Da de Muertos seasonal celebration event page.

Bug Fixes

  • A message questioning how all the treasure went overboard when there are no ghosts on board was accidentally displayed twice as part of the game end sequence.
  • In rare circumstances, when The Wishful was played by a bot, it could cause the active trait timer to wait out its full duration when a decision was already made.
  • All pirate templates with any of the Parrot hats would default back to the Scarlet colouration when re-entering a lobby. Your correct choice of Parrot should now be recorded!

3.4 update arriving soon!
We are hard at work on our next larger patch - details of which will all be revealed soon!

Meddlesome Update
New Trait: The Meddler
Our first new trait for The Meddlesome Update is The Meddler!

On days when The Meddler does not play in, they may choose a pirate that is playing in and change whatever theyve chosen to play in today to either an obey or a disobey. Like other active traits, their power is limited and The Meddler can only meddle a maximum of three times each voyage.

When a meddle takes place, the pirate whose job was meddled will receive a private prompt on their device to let them know that theyve been meddled (and whether their choice is being forced to obey or disobey), and just before the job cards are revealed on the main screen you will see an indication that a meddle took place today.

Whether your Meddler is a ghost trying to meticulously frame a human pirate, or a human pirate thwarting the plans of your ghosts, The Meddler is sure to add an extra layer to all your social deducting.
New Trait: The Sensitive
Our second new trait for The Meddlesome Update is The Sensitive!

The Sensitive is able to tell, by checking their black spot, whether they are currently next to a ghost on the ship. That means if the pirate one rank up, or down, from them is a ghost - or even if both are! - The Sensitive will know that theyre near some spooky business.

The Sensitive adds a whole new perspective to events which change pirates rank and positions on the ship. Watch out when the captain promotes you - they might be bringing you into the suspicion of The Sensitive!
New Feature: The Ship Shop
Nat OBother has opened up his Ship Shop - a new expansion to the Shop Ship! Bobbing in his barrel, but always ready to go, nothing is too much bother for our Nat!

The Ship Shops specialism is helping you to customise your ship - as displayed on the title screen and sailing while youre on a voyage. Everyone gets a free ship slot by default, so you can visit Nat and start building right away!

Nat sells a wide range of ship parts for PP Coins, from figureheads to flags, from sails to sterns, and you can combine them to build the ship of your dreams. To top things off, hes also here to help you give each ship a name and icon.

If youre feeling flush and customisations your thing, Nat can also sell you additional ship slots which let you own more than one ship - saving custom ship configurations to switch between quickly. The more ships you own, the more they cost, so having a navy of seaworthy ships might take more adventurin than you expect!
New Event: Ominous Winds
With The Meddlesome Update, were also introducing one new event - Ominous Winds! When Ominous Winds blow, a pirate is sure to see an omen of the future. What will this omen do? Will it threaten to throw a pirate overboard? Offer them a promotion to captain? Or something else entirely?

All omens are tracked as ongoing events (so you can see the details at the side of the screen!) and grant a sense of impending fortune or doom to a particular pirate. Will your omen play out, or will it expire before it has a chance to take effect?
UI Improvements
Weve made some improvements to the Paper Pirates UI to increase readability, and to help add understanding to the way the game is played. The following three key features are designed with new players in mind in particular:
The Phase Tracker
In the top left of the game screen, youll now see the phase tracker. The phase tracker indicates which stage (playing in, event or voting) of the current day youre at, and which one is coming up next.
Device Action Reminders
Weve made it more clear when someone needs to take an action on their device, with a clearer indicator above a pirate. These trigger when a pirate needs to make a choice in an event or vote a pirate overboard for example.
Who Voted? Indicators
In addition to the existing Who voted for who tracker on each players device, weve added a visual indicator of who cast votes for who during voting in the form of coloured black spots.
Can Create a Ghost Indicator
When an event has an action or decision that might create a ghost, the event message box will give you a little warning to let you know. Look out for this as a helpful reminder when weighing up whether its worthwhile to poison that soup or not!

Weve also given the Credits page a bit of a facelift - check it out to see the pirates on the Iteration Games crew!

Deduction and Deception Update
New Trait: The Shapeshifter!
Its great to see so many people having fun with Trait games, and the popularity of The Wishful hasnt gone unnoticed. Were super excited to introduce some additional new traits in 3.2, which share The Wishfuls playful sense of having a power they can activate on days when they dont play in. Our first new trait in 3.2 is: The Shapeshifter!

On days when The Shapeshifter does not play in, they may shift their shape, swapping their team (from human team to ghost team, or from ghost team to human team). Like The Wishful, their power is limited and The Shapeshifter can only change their shape three times each voyage.

The big limiting factor on The Shapeshifter is only being able to use their power when they dont play in. Will you take the opportunity to shift your team early in the game, hoping things play out as you expect, or risk a later game switch and risk playing in every day and ending up trapped on the losing team?
New Trait: The Interrogator!
Our second new trait in 3.2 is: The Interrogator!

On days when The Interrogator does not play in, they may prepare an interrogation by choosing a pirate and a specific trait. They will then be told whether their interrogation was correct or incorrect through their trait information in the black spot. Like The Wishful and The Shapeshifter, their power is limited and The Interrogator can only prepare three interrogations each voyage.

As with most traits, The Interrogator can begin the game on either the Human team or the Ghost team, so you never know whether your Interrogator is working for good or for evil. Even if theyve managed to uncover some juicy information, can you always trust what they want to share with the crew?
Reworked Trait: The Disguised!
We love The Disguised, and we know that you do too, but one of the things weve heard from a lot of players is that they want it to have more interaction throughout the game than with just The Psychic. The Disguised rework makes their trait apply to all team reveals through traits or events. Spy on a pirate whos Disguised? Their team will be flipped! Census with a pirate whos Disguised? It will report one higher, or lower, than the actual number of ghosts.

The Disguised now adds a lot of uncertainty to your games, and its a very safe claim for any initial ghost players - but as with all traits, it can only appear once, so watch out for those counter-claims (and maybe use the power of your Interrogator, if you have one, to find the real one).

As part of the rework, weve also made it so The Disguised can appear independently of The Psychic - so for those of you whose strategies relied on the presence of The Disguised to confirm or de-confirm the presence of The Psychic, you might need to think of new ways to force your Psychic out of hiding!
Watch a Pirate - On-screen team reveal
Following the introduction of Spectator Mode in the Traitorous Update, weve added a new feature for players who would like to make their pirates team (and secret objective in Scored Games, or trait in Trait Games) public. Weve seen streamers using Spectator Mode to run fantastic multi-perspective streams, and by using Watch a Pirate they can choose to share their team publicly on their stream with their viewers, while keeping it secret from other spectators.

To initiate the Watch a Pirate feature, you can click on any pirate in the lobby or in-game and choose Watch Pirate from the pop-up menu. This player will then receive a prompt on their device to approve or deny the request. At any time, you can stop watching a pirate using the close button next to the pirates information.
New Player Tutorial
For players new to Paper Pirates, weve added a Tutorial Island to the Plot a Course options. The Tutorial offers a more guided, gentler introduction to Paper Pirates, with some in-depth explanations of the various mechanics as you play through the game. The Captain will appear on-screen, with animations, to explain to you what the rules are regarding playing in, voting, events, and more.

Additionally, if you are new to Paper Pirates, The Captain will introduce you to all the key features of the game, including The Captains Log and The Bounty Board. If youre a Paper Pirates veteran, The Captain might pop up from time to time to tell you about a feature you already know about - but rest assured, hes only trying to be helpful!
New Choose a Pirate Screens
Whenever you have to choose a pirate - either in voting or in an event - weve added a little bit of extra personality to the screen by including little avatars of each players pirate, plus their pirate colour in big chunky (harder to misclick!) buttons.
Improved In-Game Update Notes
The Update Notes button from the title screen has had a facelift! The in-game update notes now cover the headline features of each update, with a short description, right in the client. Its a little more fun and friendly than the notes that were there before! The full patch notes are always available on Steam for anyone who wants to dive into the full details.
A Few Other Things
• Weve made some general improvements to the Photo Booth, which now saves your snaps with correct transparency. That means if you want to take a pic of your pirate against the green screen background, you now get a nice crisp copy of your pirate on their own ready for you to use as you wish!
  • If you have Remote Start enabled in the options, the pirate who has the option to start the game is now labelled in the lobby with the addition of a crown icon.
  • Weve added Steam Rich Presence, which shows whats going on in your Steam Friends List while youre playing Paper Pirates!
  • A few additional tracks of music have been added to the game so listen out when planning a voyage or journeying to the Shop Ship!
Bug Fixes
• We lost our special Paper Pirates cursor icon temporarily, but it has now returned!

Wishful Update
New Trait: The Wishful!
After adding the Trait game mode in 3.0, weve had an outpouring of positive feedback, and its clear that everyone loves playing Paper Pirates with Traits! One of the most common requests we get is for more traits, so with 3.1 were introducing the first new Trait: The Wishful!

On days when The Wishful does not play in, they may wish for an event from a selection displayed on their device. Their power is limited, however, and The Wishful only has three wishes - so can only use their power three times during any voyage. Whether they use their power for good to help the humans, or for evil to help the ghosts, The Wishful is sure to have a huge impact on any games where they appear!
New Event: Stowaways Brawl
Were retiring an older event that we dont think fits the Paper Pirates ethos, so were saying goodbye to Shipwreck in normal gameplay (itll still appear in certain Daily Voyages though, so its not gone for good!). To replace Shipwreck, were introducing a new event: Stowaways Brawl!

During a Stowaways Brawl, a random pirate is chosen to brawl with the stowaway. The two brawling pirates each choose from rock, paper or scissors; Rock beats scissors, paper beats rock, and scissors beats paper. If the defending pirate wins or theres a draw, nothing happens, however, if the stowaway wins, the stowaway and the defending pirate swap ranks!
The Shop Ship: Gene Botleys Map Shop
Sam Sherbot has set sail and set up shop with Gene Botley! The pair are now the proud owners of the brand new Shop Ship, which houses Sam Sherbots Outfit Shop as before, and the all-new Map Shop run by Gene Botley.

The Map Shop offers pirates an opportunity to buy maps for a small amount of PP Coins which show you how to reach a previously played Daily Voyage. The Daily Voyage locations are mysterious though, so each map can only be used once! Be sure to visit Genes Map Shop if theres any Daily Voyages you particularly enjoy playing.
Nine New Daily Voyages
To celebrate the opening of Gene Botleys Map Shop, weve expanded the destinations you can visit on your daily voyages with nine brand new daily voyages! Theyre entering the daily voyage rotation, so look out for them appearing when you check your daily voyage each day. Including new adventures where the crew can get stranded on a desert island, to being thrown overboard by a lethal assassin, theres a whole new suite of configurations here offering a new take on Paper Pirates every day!
Save your Custom Game Configurations
We love making custom games, and we know that you do too! To help streamline the process, weve added the functionality for you to save a predefined configuration to play again later. You can save up to fifty different game setups, and access these directly from the new Plot a Course menu.
Plot a Course Menu
To help keep things fresh, we have a new menu screen for when youre choosing to plot a course. Deciding between a Classic, Scored or Trait game has never been more fun!

Additionally, the Plot a Course screen lets you access your saved Custom Configurations or play any Maps youve bought from Gene Botleys Map Shop!
Revamped How to Play Guides
Weve overhauled the way the how to play information is presented from the game setup screens, to make it more informative and to help new players get into the game. Filled with video clips and guides to show the different elements of Paper Pirates, we hope the How to Play button for each game mode offers a quick and easy way to bring any new players up to speed on how to get started with Paper Pirates.

Additionally, weve made some improvements to the How to Play button on the device. If youve got players who are new to the game, make sure to point them to the menu - theres always a handy rule summary there if they need it!
In-game Chat Tooltips
When youre playing Paper Pirates on your device, weve given a few bits and pieces a lick of paint to make them look a bit spiffier. As part of the visual overhaul, weve also added tooltips to the in-game chat! Say the name of a secret objective in a Scored Game, or a Trait in a Trait Game, and itll create a tooltip link where you can immediately check out the details of that objective or trait, directly from the chat interface. Handy for all landlubbers new to the crew!
New Emotes
The new in-game chat interface also comes with an added bonus: four new emotes! Your pirates have never been so expressive! The four new emotes include waving, laughing, confusion and most excitingly, a rank-based emote! Thats right, whether youre the Captain, Stowaway, Cook, or any other rank, pressing the rank-specific emote button will have your pirate enact a little animation thats unique to that rank! Theyre super cute!
A Few Other Things
• The Default game mode is now referred to as the Classic game mode throughout Paper Pirates
  • Weve made some improvements to the Day One experience for spectators, to decrease the likelihood of spectators having to wait until the host reaches day two to start spectating
  • Theres a new Copy button in the Lobby, next to where the room code appears. Clicking the copy button copies a join URL to your clipboard, which you paste into any chat applications to share with your crew. If they click the link, theyll be taken to the Paper Pirates joining website, with the room code already pre-filled (e.g. https://paperpirat.es/?room=TEST) to make joining your game even easier! Whats even better - you dont need to reveal the room code to copy the URL to your clipboard, so if youre streaming the game, you can share the link to join the game without even needing a room code hider!
  • If youve got Auto-hide Room Code turned on in your game options, entering a room code to spectate a game will now hide the room code as you enter it so you dont reveal the room code to your audience when streaming
Bug Fixes
• The default number of innocent players in a customised trait game should now be a more rational number
  • Bots sometimes failed to hide from the wasps in the Wasp Nest event, but should now always be ready to jump into a barrel!

3.0.2 Patch

After the launch of update 3.0, the Traitorous Update, we're just pushing some bug fixes that we missed or introduced during the development of 3.0.

  • In Trait games, The Diligent was ending games way too quickly when they were the captain, this was unintended. The Diligent now does not double outcomes when they are the captain, more accurately matching the in-game description.

  • The Auto-Hide Roomcode option was broken by the addition of Spectate mode and would not hide the room code automatically when enabled, this has now been fixed.

  • 3.0.1 also went live a few days ago with some immediate bug fixes, Mac and Linux builds received this update but instead still displayed version number 3.0.0, this has now been fixed in the upgrade to 3.0.2!

Traitorous Update

New Game Mode: Trait Games!
Our third game mode adds another new way to sail on the seven seas! Returning to the original team-based nature of Paper Pirates, the Trait game mode gives you a whole new way to help your team - whether youre a human, or a ghost!

Traits
At the start of a Trait game, pirates are allocated a unique trait from the eleven traits available. These traits give each pirate a twist on the way they play the game - for example, The Assassin will always vote first in each round of voting, while The Pure cannot ever become a ghost, no matter who they vote for or what actions they take in events. Whether you choose to share your trait with the crew, keep it a secret, or maybe play more sneakily and weave a fishy tale to cover your tracks by lying about your trait, theyre sure to totally change the way that you play.

You can learn about all of the Traits in the Captains Log, and when making a Trait in Custom Games you can also choose to include or exclude specific traits based on your own personal preferences!

Innocents
In each game, a number of pirates may be allocated the Innocent Trait. These pirates have no special abilities, but are excellent scapegoats for mischief. If youre not ready to disclose your Trait yet, or simply want to cause some trouble, you can always claim to be Innocent! In Custom Games, you can use the slider to set a minimum and maximum number of Innocent pirates, to personalise the game to your liking.

Game Spectating
We know that many of you play Paper Pirates remotely, with people who arent - or cant - be with you in person. To help you play together, were introducing a spectator game mode. To spectate a game, enter the games room code after launching the spectator mode from the main menu while theyre still in the lobby.

To join the game as a pirate, youll still need to use the Paper Pirates website (https://paperpirat.es), but now the main screen will be replicated to anyone spectating through their own copy of the Steam game.

We hope that this enables more people to play Paper Pirates together where screen sharing facilities might otherwise be unavailable. Now, to play together, all you need is a copy of the game each and a room code!

Community Bounties
Bounties have levelled up! With 3.0, were introducing Community Bounties to Paper Pirates. When a community bounty is active, youll see it right at the top of the title screen. These bounties have big goals, and must be completed within a limited time - but the good news is, anyone who plays Paper Pirates during the bounty contributes to the Community Bounty! If everyone completes the bounty before the times up, a limited-time reward - such as increased gold rewards - will become available to everyone playing games for the duration of the reward!

The first bounty starts RIGHT NOW, challenging everyone to complete 100 games within seven days. Reaching the goal will unlock a 1.5x coin multiplier to all coins earned for seven days after the bountys completion!

Please note that to participate in a Community Bounty, you must have the Collect Anonymous Usage Data feature turned on in the Options menu, so that we know youve played a game!

And what do the people at home think?
Weve also added a new way to choose your events when playing in Custom Games! Weve heard that pirates love when the audience participates, and some of you were always disappointed when each new day passed and the audiences choice didnt happen. So the new mode - Audience Choice - ensures that, when an event needs to happen, if you have an audience and theyve picked events, itll always choose one of their choices!

If you select Audience Choice and you dont have an audience, or theyre feeling a little sheepish about making choices, youll get random events as normal. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, as they say!

A Few Other Things

  • New regular bounties are available, asking you to play a number of Trait games, or games with the event selection method set to Audience Choice
  • Three new achievements - and hats! - relating to Trait Games have been added for you to earn
  • Trait Games statistics have been added to the Leaderboard

Bug Fixes

  • Occasionally in Crossing the Gap, the person who fell from the vines could be haunted by their own ghost! Oops! That should no longer be possible, because whod haunt themselves?!
  • Coloured hats worn by pirates on the docks in Fishing for Treasure sometimes mysteriously looked as if theyd taken on brand new appearances, and didnt match their true appearance. This should no longer be the case!
  • The achievements Treading Water and Greedy for Gold were sometimes not correctly granted to players who had moved further from shore, or earned treasure, during their voyage.

Adventures Update

[previewyoutube=p-IpcZaeZ4I;full][/previewyoutube]

Adventure Events
Patch 2.8 brings with it a grand sense of adventure, as we introduce a new type of event to Paper Pirates! When an Adventure Event occurs during your journey, the crew temporarily takes a pitstop, engaging in a mini-adventure.

During an adventure, the crew have the chance to pick and choose which events take place, and multiple events will happen in quick succession. Its an all new way to experience events - and the things that happen on an adventure dont just stay on the adventure, theyre going to affect your game when youre back on the ship too!

The Island Adventure
The very first Adventure Event is the Island Adventure, where the crew explore an island they discover way out in the seven seas! Together you have enough resources to explore two regions of the island, so pick wisely which bits of the island you want to see each time you visit!

The island has nine regions in total, which means there are nine new fun-filled events for you to experience as part of the Island Adventure. From fishing off the docks to diving for treasure, whichever activities you try out on your trip to the island its sure to shake things up in your game!

As an extra bonus, there are five new achievements relating to the island. Work hard when youre on an adventure, and maybe you will discover a new hat for your efforts!

Dress for Adventure in the Outfit Shop
Our resident shopkeeper, Sam Sherbot, is already well acquainted with the island, and has stocked up the Outfit Shop with a whole new range of island-themed goodies for you to browse and purchase using the coins earned for playing Paper Pirates.

Continuing on the theme of dress-up, why not make an explorer outfit for your pirates - or go undercover and try to mingle with the local wildlife!

In total, there are over forty new outfit shop items, so theres plenty of new ways for you to customise your pirates.

New Outfit Customiser
As the number of things Sam Sherbot has on sale grows, weve overhauled the outfit customiser to make it more manageable when you have a large wardrobe for your pirates! The new outfit customiser is visible immediately when connecting to a game, and lets you start customising your pirates look right away. Dont worry - the randomise buttons are still there for those of you who love to leave your look all up to chance!

Additionally, a new option on the outfit customiser lets you save your current outfit to a code, which you can then store and paste into the outfit customiser again to recreate your current look with one simple button press! This gives all pirates a great way to share dress-up tips, store a full range of outfits, or bring your outfit from one persons game to another. If the owner of the game doesnt have all the items in your outfit unlocked yet, theyll get swapped out randomly for something they do have, so you might even uncover some new variations on your outfit that you love!

Daily Sales at the Outfit Shop
Sam Sherbot has been feeling generous of late, so theyre going to start offering a daily sale in the outfit shop. Each day a few categories from the shop will have a select number of items on sale, sometimes for as much as 75% off! The sales are the same for everyone, so if you see an item thats a total steal, dont forget to let your friends know so they can visit the Outfit Shop and pick it up for their game too!

A Few Other Things

  • Weve revisited the Mutiny event to include crew interaction ensuring that the mutiny never feels like a product of bad luck. In the revamped Mutiny event, all players are given an opportunity to vote in secret as to whether they favour the mutiny, or not. If half or more of the crew vote to Mutiny, the captain is thrown overboard, with anyone who voted for the Mutiny having a chance to become a ghost if the captain was a human.
  • Weve improved the way events are chosen each day, so you should see events that you see less often appearing more, to help keep every game fresh and unique!
  • The timer now has a visual indicator, which shows the number of seconds remaining before times up!
  • The Bandana outfit category has been renamed to Headwear to more accurately reflect the type of items in this category.
  • Attempting to start the game from a connected device now triggers a short countdown before the game is started. Attempts to start the game can be aborted from the main screen before the timer elapses.

Bug Fixes

  • A rare bug which caused pirates to play-in twice is now hopefully resolved.
  • Some text in the How to Play Guide for Default Games was accidentally duplicated, and has now been removed.

Ongoing Update
Events That Go On and On
Were adding a new class of events to Paper Pirates, and reclassifying some of the old events to add clarity and readability to the game! Ongoing Events are events which trigger some subtle rule or state change to the game, which lasts until something happens. You can see which ongoing events are currently in play by hovering over the ongoing event tabs in the top left of the main screen, or checking the Ongoing Events pop-up from the menu on your device.
Six Brand New Events
With ongoing events, weve not only reclassified some existing events, but were introducing six brand new events too! This brings the number of events in Paper Pirates - not including events only available through seasonal celebrations - up to forty-two!

Five of these are new ongoing events, and one of them is a regular event, but theyre all aimed at switching up the way you play! From Seeing Red, which prevents pirates from skipping their vote until someone is voted overboard, to Captains Fortune, which gives the captain three job choices at the start of each day instead of two until a job is successful, were sure these new events will mix up your games and add new strategies!
Ten New Achievements
With new events, once again comes a bumper crop of new achievements - and as always, each new achievement comes with a new hat, which you can unlock as soon as you earn the achievement. If you want to be the most fashionable pirate on the seven seas, track down any of the ten new achievements as quickly as you can, and try out the new hats before the rest of yer crew!
Play Dress-up in Paper Pirates!
Sam Sherbot has been visiting many far off regions collecting the very best top pirate fashions from all over the world for sale in the Outfit Shop, all ready for you to play dress-up! Theyve brought back over 40 new items for you to spend your hard-earned pieces of eight on, many of which make perfectly coordinated outfit sets! Make sure that after playing a game or completing a bounty you check out the Outfit Shop to see what new things you can buy! If youve got one piece of a set, dont forget to play more games so that you can get the other pieces - it would be a crime to miss out!

Dont forget that you can join us every Saturday at 8pm GMT on Twitch for our weekly dev stream, or pop by our YouTube channel to see Lets Plays of Paper Pirates, How To videos and more! Or if youre looking for a crew to set sail with make sure to join our Discord!

As the crew return from an adventure on a deserted treasure island, they race to see who has the honour of first footing the pirate ship. Those pirates who make it back first are granted good fortune for the coming voyage - and will be given a higher rank on the ship accordingly! Bounties Update
Complete Bounties to Earn Coins!
Bounties add a whole new way for you to earn coins for the Outfit Shop while playing Paper Pirates! Check the Bounty Board from the title screen, and youll see the bounties you currently have active. Complete bounties - such as Play 3 Scored Games - during your Paper Pirates adventures, and next time you check the bounty board, youll earn the listed coin reward! For every bounty you complete, you get another, so keep completing bounties, and you can really build your booty stores!

Got a bounty you dont think youll complete? Once per day, you can remove a bounty from the board, and will immediately be offered a new one! Theres a huge range of different bounties, that will encourage you to play Paper Pirates in different ways. Happy coin hunting, pirates!
Its the Captains Choice now!
When playing Custom Games, dont forget that the Events tab lets you change how the events in your game are selected. Were adding to the modes, by introducing Captains Choice, to complement Random events and Crews Choice events.

When playing with your event selection set to Captains Choice, each day an event would occur, the Captain is offered a choice of three events. Can you trust your Captain to share the event selection with the crew? Do you like the events theyre picking? With the Captain holding so much power over the ship, make sure you can trust them, and be ready to throw them overboard at the first sign of suspicion!

If youre playing with an audience, the Captain can decline to choose for the day, trusting in fate, and choosing the event the audience picked instead. The Captain doesnt know what event the audience has picked before choosing it, so its a surprise even to them! Will the audience wildcard help or hinder the crew?

2.5.1 Bonus Update

Weve got a few little extra updates, features, and bug fixes ready for release a little earlier than usual - so were bringing them to you in the 2.5.1 Paper Pirates Bonus Update!
Twitch Integration
At the request of the lovely streamers who have been playing Paper Pirates, weve added Twitch Integration to Paper Pirates. If youd like to ensure that your players are using their Twitch usernames to join your games, enable Require Twitch Login from the main menu options before starting your game! Players who arent logged in to Twitch will automatically join your audience instead (unless you have Audience Mode turned off, which case they wont be able to join at all!).

To play with a connected Twitch account, click the Twitch logo in the top-left when connected via your device. Once youre connected via Twitch, you wont be able to change your name - so press the Twitch icon again to disconnect your account, and youll be able to change your pirate name again.
Kick Pirates from the Lobby/In-Game
Another requested streamer feature is the ability to remove pirates from the lobby and from the game. Where previously you could click on a pirate to mute them, doing so now opens a menu, where you can choose whether to mute a pirate (preventing them from sending messages to the chat) or kick them from your game!

If you kick a pirate after your game has started, that pirate will be replaced by a bot, and they wont be able to reconnect. Please be very careful and be absolutely certain that you want to remove that pirate before kicking them!
Keyboard Menu Navigation, Accessibility Mode and Spoken Room Codes
In our efforts to improve Paper Pirates accessibility, weve added a first pass at keyboard navigation to in-game menus, which you can try using the arrow keys.

Additionally, weve introduced an Accessibility Mode, which can be turned on either through the main menu options or by pressing left shift three times. When Accessibility Mode is turned on, spoken prompts will announce which menu option is currently selected. This functionality initially covers the main menus and options screen, and there are some additional spoken prompts during the game to indicate key gameplay elements (e.g. how much treasure is remaining).

Finally, we have added a button to the lobby screen which allows for the room code to be read aloud. This button can also be accessed and selected via the aforementioned keyboard navigation.

The accessibility features are currently very much in testing, and we would greatly appreciate feedback on these via the Paper Pirates Discord, or through the Steam forums.
A Few Other Things
• You can now hover over each pirates objective in the round history to see a full description of their secret objective at the end of the game.
  • If a pirate ends a Scored Game on the ghost team, the ghost haunting them will now join them on the party podiums to share in the celebrations.
Bug Fixes
• Hats in the new hat unlock' toast were appearing behind the models head! Now they arent.
  • If someone voted for you during a Shroud of Fog event, the little black spots appearing all over your device gave the game away as to who voted for you - oops! Theyre now properly obscured by the fog. Spooky!
  • When playing a game with event selection set to Crews Choice, some events were appearing a little too often.
  • The Lost at Sea Daily Voyage wasnt correctly activating the Shroud of Fog event when it shouldve been.
  • When playing with Crews Choice, rarely on days with no audience vote, an audience vote from a previous day could have accidentally been chosen.

The full list of outfit items available during Da de Muertos is:
Honour the Spirits!
Go on a sailing adventure during Da de Muertos, and your crew will have the chance to honour the spirits of the departed. During the Event phase of the game, the Honour the Spirits event may activate for the duration of Da de Muertos, offering a randomly chosen pirate hidden information relating to how many ghosts have been successfully cleansed from your game so far

Victory Update

As we prepare to say goodbye to the Haunted Seas event, were setting sail for destination 2.5! The focus of this patch is improving the Paper Pirates user experience, and hopefully making it so that everyone who plays can get a better understanding of the rules. Dont be too sad about the end of Haunted Seas - keep an eye on the Steam updates for more seasonal events as they happen!
Celebrate the Winners with an All-New Game End Experience
The games not over when you reach the shore or all your treasures gone overboard, and were recognising that with an all-new, freshly revamped game end experience! New screens and animations add tension as each crew member is revealed to be a human or ghost, and if you made it home safe? Watch out as the captains role is dramatically revealed, revealing the winning team to all!

If youre playing a scored game, theres a second game end screen featuring our party podiums, that show each pirates coin total. Watch out for a last-second reversal of fortune as the secret objectives are revealed - especially if you have a Demotivated Stowaway!
Pirate Leaderboard
Every time you play a game of Paper Pirates from 2.5 onwards, your player statistics will be saved to your pirate template. Keep using the same pirate name to build up a score over time, and then see how you fare amongst your friends with the new Leaderboard! On the Leaderboard, you can sort by a number of stats (including human wins and ghost wins!) to see whos truly the most victorious pirate of all.
Player Chat Improvements
Weve given the in-game chat a little bit of a facelift, to make it more user friendly! The chat history has been separated from the Game Log (which you can still find in the menu), and shows up when youre sending a message. Additionally, each player is assigned a colour which shows up throughout the game - in their nameplate, in the chat, and during the game end screens! There are ten colours in total, but dont be fighting amongst yourselves for your favourite colour - theyre randomly chosen each game!
Connected Player Guidance and Graphical Improvements
The connected player client has received a visual overhaul with 2.5, which adds improved guidance throughout the game indicating what you need to do and when. Additionally, there are a host of fun new animations that play at certain points in the game - look out for all the different event animations as you play! If youd like to reduce your bandwidth usage while playing, or improve client performance, you can turn animations off in the menu after youve connected to a game!
The Captain Returns!
For this patch, weve coordinated some socially distanced voice recording, and were delighted to welcome back Captain Wilson who has topped up the voice acting in Paper Pirates. Once again you can look forward to announcements throughout the game, including the rules introduction, during events, and in the new improved game end screen!
Voting History
During voting, your connected device will now display an indicator of who is currently voting (remember, pirates vote one by one from stowaway to captain!), and a record of who each pirate voted for - or a note to say they passed their vote if they did!
Scurvy
Patch 2.5 sees the introduction of one new event, but its sure to really mix up your games! When treasure goes overboard, theres a chance the Scurvy event might activate, offering a pirate a bowl of fruit. Share the fruit amongst the crew, saving pirates in turn - the question is, is there enough fruit to save everyone?

Dont forget that you can join us every Saturday at 8pm GMT (adjusted time for the UKs daylight savings time!) on Twitch for our weekly dev stream, or pop by our YouTube channel to see Lets Plays of Paper Pirates, How To videos and more! Or if youre looking for a crew to set sail with make sure to join our Discord!

Seasonal Update

Storms A-comin!
Were stoked to be launching the great ship 2.4, bringing general improvements to Paper Pirates, plus a whole new way to play! Play a Daily Voyage each day to boost your coin collection, celebrate the seasons with limited-time content (including the Halloween event running from 1st-31st October!), and check out the new way to pick an objective on a Scored Game. Read on for the notes in full!
Go on a Daily Voyage!
Weve added a new game mode to Paper Pirates, the Daily Voyage! Set sail each day with a Daily Voyage, featuring a set of game customisation options that we think makes for a really interesting Paper Pirates experience. Find whole new ways to play, and earn yourself a huge coin bonus once a day! There are over 15 daily voyages for you to discover - can you collect them all?
Celebrate the Season with Paper Pirates!
Support has been added for seasonal events, which will run at key holidays throughout the year! Seasonal events add all-new content for a limited time only - including new options in the Outfit Shop and special Events.

Our first event is the Halloween Haunted Seas Event, running from 1st October to 31st October, with a whole raft of limited-time content. Haunted Seas content will only be available during the month of October, so be sure to get spooky on the seven seas to try out some all-new Paper Pirates goodness!
Choose an Objective & New Objectives!
Its always rough when you get the same secret objective in a Scored Game over and over again. Starting a Scored Game will now offer all pirates a choice between two of the secret objectives, which you can confirm through the black spot! You only have until the end of the first day to choose an objective, otherwise well pick for you - and nobody wants that!

To keep it fresh, weve also added five new secret objectives, bringing the total to 20, ensuring that everyone will be offered unique objectives even in ten player games. Check out the Captains Log to learn more about the new objectives.
More Help for the Crew while Playing!
Weve added a new menu you can access while playing Paper Pirates on your connected device, which houses a whole host of new options intended to make playing Paper Pirates easier and more accessible! The Game Log has moved to live inside the new menu, and joins new friends, including a summary of the Paper Pirates rules, an Event Guide, an Objectives Guide, and a Game Info screen, which lets players know what settings were used to start the game!
Revamped Playing In Screen
Choosing whether to obey or disobey has never been so exciting, as the playing in screen has had a radical overhaul to improve readability and make it more visually appealing! Additionally, weve streamlined the process to make the rules simpler to understand: No longer does the captain tell a Truth or Lie, but chooses to Obey or Disobey - the same as the rest of the crew!
Reveal Role on Vote Overboard
Weve added a new option to Custom Games, which allows you to set games to Reveal Role on Vote Overboard. With this setting on, the crew will get confirmation when voting a pirate overboard as to whether the pirate thrown overboard was a human, or a ghost. This can really change the way you have to play, and works great if you have a random number of ghosts at the start of the game! Roles are only confirmed when players are thrown overboard in votes, so watch out for events that throw pirates overboard - theyre still to cause mystery and chaos!
A Few Other Things
• We added four new achievements - which also means four awesome new hats! Check Steam to see how you can get each of these new achievements:

    • A Voyage a Day
    • Seven Seas
    • Big Spender
    • The Compass of Fate

  • We fired the end game kraken, and hired a much more modern, sleeker, more awesome-looking one. This also means the Squid Hat has an amazing new look.
Bug Fixes
Custom Games with a customised event loadout would sometimes miss one of your events out. Oops! Theyre all included now, which means games with only one event should again be functional!

Fashionable Update

Heave ho, mateys, to the Outfit Shop we go!
Put on your best pirate digs, and get ready for the Fashionable Update for Paper Pirates - bringing a hundred new outfit customisation options, which you can unlock by playing games of Paper Pirates, plus a whole new way to choose your events in custom games, and much more! Read on for the full details of everything included in this months update!
Earn Coins as you Play!
As you sail the seven seas, youll earn coins as a reward. Playing a Default game will grant you a small amount of coins, and playing a Scored game will grant you coins based on the amount of coins earned by each player pirate in the game. Your total coins can be viewed from the title screen - and if youve already been playing Scored Games, you might find that you already have some coins saved up from games youve played before 2.3!
Spend Coins to Unlock New Outfit Customisations!
But what can you do with those coins? You can spend them at the all-new Outfit Shop! Sam Sherbot, the Shopkeep, has opened their brand new Outfit Shop - and is selling 100 new outfit customisation options across all categories! The Outfit Shop lets you try on new pieces, and once purchased, you can access them from the outfit customiser in the lobby before starting your game.
Events? Theyre the Crews Choice!
Custom Games have a new option under the Events tab, which allows you to switch your event selection mode between Random (events selected randomly) and the new Crews Choice option. When Crews Choice is chosen, each day, every crew member will be offered a selection of possible events, and will vote on the event theyd like to happen. The more votes an event receives, the more likely it is to happen - but the actual event thats picked is all down to the Compass of Fate! Crews Choice adds a whole new way to play, and another opportunity for pirates to get involved in voting and discussion - we love it, and we hope you will too!

If youre playing with an audience, an audience event will be added to the Compass of Fate every day at least one person votes, and could be chosen to really mix things up in your game!
Bot Voting Improvements
Our bots have gotten a little smarter, and will now make more informed decisions when asked to vote in events. Theyll attempt to use any knowledge they have, such as whether they think someone is a confirmed human or ghost, to make decisions in events such as exorcism - so you should hopefully see some more sensible bot plays in games with less human pirates!
Audience Mode Improvements
Pirates who join the audience will experience a newly improved audience flow, which offers more guidance, instructions and explanation on how audience mode interacts with the game. The audience will be able to see which events other audience members voted for, and when youre not currently voting, theres a prompt to let you know what the next thing you can do is.

Audience members will also have access to the game log from the point they started observing a game, and theres a new question mark button which offers a quick overview of the rules of Paper Pirates!

Additionally, audience members will now see in-game when an event is chosen by their votes. Look out for the Audiences Choice badge on the event messages!
A Few Other Things
• Certain elements of the game (such as the lobby) have been given a revised look and feel, to ensure consistency
  • Crew in the lobby now have a Ready? button they can use to signal that theyve finished customising their pirate and theyre ready for the game to begin
  • Auto-Hide Room Code will now hide the room code in-game, but can be revealed by clicking on the room code cloud
  • The maximum length of chat messages has been increased slightly
  • Our new shopkeeper, Sam Sherbot, may rarely join you on a voyage as a bot. Look out for them on your trips!
Bug Fixes
• The Immunity event didnt always present a countdown timer to prompt the Captain to choose quickly, but the timer should now always pop-up
  • A few very rare server crashes have been fixed, so hopefully games are more robust!
  • Fixed an issue which could cause games to start on days that werent numbered 1
  • In the lobby, the room code no longer blocks the view of the pirates in the bottom right of the screen

As always, dont forget that you can join us every Saturday at 8pm BST on Twitch for our weekly dev stream, or pop by our YouTube channel to see Lets Plays of Paper Pirates, How To videos and more!

Timely Update

Batten down the hatches, crew!
Its about time we introduce you to Paper Pirates version 2.2 - an adventure of an update that includes a host of new events and achievements, a new game log feature in the device client, and a whole new way to create custom games! Read on for all the details!
Brand New Events!
To keep you on your toes, weve added nine new events - and for the first time ever, four of these events are exclusive to the Scored Games variant of Paper Pirates! If youre looking to complete your events list in the Captains Log, make sure youve played at least a few scored games to uncover these hidden new events. We dont want to spoil any surprises, but one of the new events has the potential to completely warp your game!
More Customisation in Custom Games
Bringing more excitement to Custom Games, you can now include and exclude specific events and secret objectives from each custom game you play! Hate it when a last minute Mutiny disrupts your plans? You can ban the Mutiny event from your game! Wondering what would happen if every pirate was Demotivated? You can include it as the only secret objective in your game! Now your custom games can be as different as your heart desires!
Extra Achievements!
With new events and new ways to play custom games, were also adding a handful of new achievements - and as always, each new achievement comes with a new hat, which you can unlock as soon as you earn the achievement. If you want to be the most fashionable pirate on the seven seas, track down any of the eight new achievements as quickly as you can, and try out the new hats before yer crew!
The Game Log
Didnt see who went overboard? Looked away and missed an event? Each connected device now has access to the Game Log, which tracks all the important going-ons of each game, available to each player during the game. Use the new Game Log button to access it, and youll be able to recap whether the job each day was a success or failure - and who played in, which events happened each day and what they did, and who voted to throw a pirate overboard. Additionally, any chat messages sent will be logged in the Game Log too! Great for cross-referencing when someone claimed to be a human with what their actions showed.
Audience Experience Adjustments
Weve made some general adjustments to the audience experience, for a smoother overall experience. Audience members will now see a short description of each event when choosing which to vote for, and events voted for by the audience should now be slightly more likely to appear too. The audience flow has been adjusted, so audience members need to keep an eye on their devices so they know when to vote!
Performance Improvements
Weve tightened a few things up under the stern, making sure everythings ship shape and ready for sailing. You may see some general performance improvements, particularly with certain graphics cards and drivers.
A Few Other Things
• Weve added How To Play guides, accessible from the title screen for both Default and Scored games. Just click the ? button, and theyll pop right open, detailing all the rules of Paper Pirates for you to browse!
  • Some older events have been given new animations - see if you can spot them all!
  • Each day now has a day/night cycle, to help impress upon the crew the passage of time.
  • Buttons linking to the Iteration Games Twitter, Discord, Twitch and YouTube communities have been added to the title screen. Please visit us to talk about Paper Pirates, wed love to hear from you!
  • Pirates can no longer join a game using the name of a pirate who is already in the game.
Bug Fixes
• The Just Desserts achievement wasnt being properly credited, but this is now fixed - Evil Chefs, get your soup at the ready!
  • Weve made the reconnection process a touch more robust, so you should now have a greater chance of reconnecting to a game when youve disconnected.

As always, dont forget that you can join us every Saturday at 8pm BST on Twitch for our weekly dev stream, or pop by our YouTube channel to see Lets Plays of Paper Pirates, How To videos and more!
In-Game Patch Notes
Look out for the Patch Notes button from the title screen, to view a quick summary of the latest changes to Paper Pirates in-game. Handy if you need to find out about the latest bug fixes and balance updates before setting sail!
Steam Cloud
A few updates ago, we added pirate templates, so that you can save your pirate appearances for names you use often. Now those appearances will be saved to the Steam Cloud, so theyre all safely backed up, along with some of your preferences, configurations, and stats data - as a bonus, theyll also travel with you from computer to computer if you play Paper Pirates on multiple PCs!
Menu Improvements
Weve revisited some of our menu screens to improve the general user experience of Paper Pirates. Our options screens in particular have been revisited, and for the first time you can access some options directly from the lobby - so you no longer have to back out of a game to tweak your settings!
Balance Updates
Weve been reviewing the way that secret objectives play out in scored games and were making a few small adjustments to some secret objectives to ensure that theyre fun and to make sure everyone feels like they have a chance at earning some coins in each game.
Scored Games
• The Pacifistic secret objective has been removed.
  • The Diplomatic secret objective has been added! A Diplomatic pirate scores coins based on how many pirates havent been thrown overboard at the end of the game - were sure that a diplomatic pirate is bound to make an enemy of a ruthless pirate where both objectives appear!
  • The Ambitious secret objective has been reworked. Instead of only awarding coins if you end the game as the captain, you now earn a number of coins based on how high your rank is amongst the crew.
  • The Zealous and Spiteful secret objectives have been reworked. Instead of only awarding coins if your target pirate ends the game as captain/stowaway, you now earn a number of coins based on how high/low their rank is amongst the crew respectively.
  • The number of coins available for completing the Dependent secret objective has been decreased.
  • The number of coins available for completing the Ruthless secret objective has been decreased.
Bug Fixes
• Occasionally, pirates with no hat were assigned Blackbeards Beard upon starting a game. Pirates with no hat will now remain hatless once the game commences.
  • Pirates created in the lobby for a game that is aborted before its started will now still be saved as templates.
  • Rarely, when a bot foresaw an event through the Magic Lamp event, the event chosen wouldnt actually take place. It should now always happen - watch out for those Shipwrecks!

As always, dont forget that you can join us every Saturday at 8pm BST on Twitch (https://www.twitch.tv/iterationgames) for our weekly dev stream, or pop by our YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqi1SJHkkB4a5h9Q-YJjLWQ) to see Lets Plays of Paper Pirates, How To videos and more!

Objectives Update

Yo ho ho, mateys!
Were really excited to introduce Paper Pirates 2.0!

Headline features include fast mode, the Captains Log, and perhaps most excitingly, a whole new game mode with an entirely new way to play Paper Pirates! Without further ado, lets get into the patch notes....
New Game Mode: Scored Games!
Our new game mode completely changes the way that you sail on the seven seas! Paper Pirates is team-based, its true, but in a Scored Game, each pirate earns coins depending on how well they play. To unlock scored games, just play one game of Paper Pirates, and then the Scored Game and Custom Game buttons will be available to you in the main menu!
What do points make? Coins!
In a Scored Game, pirates earn coins depending on how well they play. Vote to throw a ghost overboard as a human? Coins for you! Achieve your victory condition? Coins for you! The more coins you have, the better youll rank at the end of the game. Coin totals are hidden until the end of the game, so you never know quite whos in the lead until the dramatic finale.
Secret Objectives
In a Scored Game, each pirate also has their very own secret objective, earning coins for meeting their objective as they progress through the game. Secret objectives are unique to you, and only displayed on your device, so dont be sharin them with yer crew! Objectives range from trying to finish the game as the captain, to gaining bonus coins every time you throw a targeted pirate overboard, so theyre sure to mix up your usual style. But watch out! One player might be demotivated, earning a bumper crop of coins if they finish the game as the stowaway

There are fifteen different objectives, and once youve unlocked scored games you can read all about them in the brand-new Captains Log. Once you know what they are, youll need to look out for any pirates who are behaving suspiciously Try to achieve your secret objective, but dont let anyone else get theirs to stay ahead of your crewmates!
Fast Mode
Weve heard your requests for a fast mode, for those of you who are seasoned sailors. If youre looking for a speedier game of Paper Pirates, head over to the options screen and enable Fast Mode. In Fast Mode, fewer dialogue boxes will be displayed, and theres less time spent waiting for animations. Dont panic, well still share important information, like when events are happening, so dont feel like you need to know Paper Pirates inside out before you try it out. You can even turn it on in the middle of a game using the options menu!
Captains Log
Lookin for info on all the secret workings of Paper Pirates voyages? The new Captains Log is for you! It holds the secrets of all the objectives, events, hats and bots in the game. Events wont show up until youve seen them in a game, and hats wont show up until youve unlocked them, so hunt them all down to reveal them in the log!
Emotes
Brimming over with piratey feelings? Your pirates have learnt a whole new way to communicate! When you pop open the chat box, youll now see four new emote buttons that will prompt your pirate to express their feelings through the medium of animation. Feeling joyful? Your pirate can cheer with a heart! Feeling surprised? Your pirate can show an exclamation! Why not use emotes in combination with emoji to really show how youre feeling when your crewmates have turned against you and are all voting to throw you overboard!
Bot Improvements
For those of you who play solo or like to throw in a bot or two for a bigger game, weve made improvements to our bots to make them more seaworthy.
Bot AI Improvements
Weve tweaked our bot AI so that theyre a little smarter. They should now have a better understanding of event outcomes, and identify their vote targets a little more keenly, and may even send a chat message if they find out some secret information! Does that mean its a little bit harder to win against the bots? Maybe! Good luck out there pirates, youll need it.
Bot Identities
Each of the bots now has their very own fixed appearance and personality, so you can spend a little bit of time getting to know them. There are eleven bots for you to know and love, and we hope that over time, youll welcome them into your games with a hearty yo ho ho! Have a favourite bot? Why not let us know in the comments!
Player Templates
Finding that youre spending ages in the pirate customiser, setting up the perfect pirate look every time you play? Were introducing pirate templates! When you customise a pirate, itll be bookmarked using your pirates name. Next time you join a game hosted by the same person on the same PC with the same name, youll default to the same appearance! Dont worry, you can still edit it and it'll update the template, so youre never stuck with the same hat for too long.
Expanded Custom Game Options
When starting a custom game, there are some new options to keep your games fresh. You can choose to play either Paper Pirates Classic, or the brand-new Scored Mode, and all customisation options are available to you whichever you choose. You can now also choose whether to fill your missing spaces with bots or not, perfect if youre not sure how many pirates are coming aboard! Finally, you can now break the ghost slider apart, and choose a minimum and maximum number of ghosts - that means youll get a random number of ghosts in your game! In a random ghosts game, you dont find out how many ghosts there are at the start, for that added layer of deductive difficulty.
Balance Updates
To keep things fun and fair, and to always meet the pirate code, the following balance changes have been made to events:

  • In the Election event, the stowaway is no longer eligible to vote and cannot be elected captain. The captain, on the other hand, is now able to vote!
A Few Other Things
• A small number of new options have been added to the pirate customiser
  • Idle on the title screen for long enough, and you might see some of the bots dropping in for a surprise visit!
  • The appearance of the aura, indicating how many times a player has played into rounds successfully or unsuccessfully, has been improved
  • The distance track has been revamped to more clearly indicate your progress
Bug Fixes
• The Stowaway event outcome now displays correctly in the Round History.
  • Clicking in the Round History no longer accidentally mutes pirates hiding behind the history window.

Finally, dont forget, you can join us every Saturday at 8pm BST on Twitch for our weekly dev stream. We love when the audience joins in, so please feel free to swing by and play a few games with us!

Eventful Update

Aye aye, Captain!
Version 1.4 of Paper Pirates has just gone live, and dare we say it, this might be our biggest update yet. Weve added new achievements (and you know what that means - new hats!), added new events, fixed as many bugs as we could find, and added some new features that make sailing the seven seas easier than ever before. Read on for all the details!

Pirates be aware, this update includes some major new content, and as such you may find that older versions of Paper Pirates stop working! Please make sure that you have updated to the latest version through Steam to ensure smooth sailing.
New Events, Event Names and Categories
We hear all the time that events are one of your favourite parts of Paper Pirates, but we heard loud and clear that you wanted more of them. So thats what we did! Not only that, but weve revisited the way that events happen, to ensure that every trip is fun and fair, no matter whether ye be pirate or ghost.
Brand New Events
Whats that, MORE events? Weve added thirteen brand new events to the game, which means there are twice as many events as before! New events include all sorts of pirate adventures - will you find a magic lamp and be granted a vision into the future? Will you take the chance as the Cook to poison the soup of your greatest rival?
Event Titles
Can you never remember which event is which? When an event occurs the dialogue boxes now display the name of the event. We hope that youll enjoy getting to know the events, learning their names, befriending them, and building strategies to cope with each one. This also means the audience members know which events theyre voting on, too!
Event Categories
Events now fall into three types - sailing events, treasure events, and wildcard events. This means that if things are going a bit too well for the humans, well try to give you an event that might just save the ghosts! If your ship is starting to look more haunted than shipshape, well get you back on track with an event thatll make your time at sea a breeze! No matter how bad things look for you, a well-timed event can always turn the tide of the game, so never give up hope!
End of the Game Clarity

Round Summary
Need to settle an argument between crew members at the end of the game? Nobody willing to own up to being The OG? When you reach the end of a game, youll have a new option to view a Round Summary, which shows you what happened on every day of your voyage on the seven seas. You can check who played in (and whether they obeyed or disobeyed!) each day, when everyone was a ghost, and which events happened and when. For the forensic analysts of you, theres a lot you can learn here about the shady behaviour of your friends. Just dont spend too long at the end of the game summary before jumping into your next adventure!
Personalised End of Game Screen
Each pirate will now receive an end of game screen on their device, letting them know which victory outcome the crew achieved, and whether they personally won or lost the game. This adds some additional clarity, especially to the stowaway - thats right stowaways, you always get a little message telling you that youve lost! Hard luck this game, but theres always next time!
Achievements, Hats and Pirate Customisation
Theres nothing a pirate loves more than being fashionable. Well, theres probably a few things actually, but lets say being fashionable. To help ensure our pirates are at the peak of their fashion game, weve added new hats - and of course, new hats, means new achievements! Whether youre nearing the completion of your achievement collection, or youve only just started, theres plenty to play for in the Great Hat Race.
New Achievements and New Hats
Weve added seven new achievements, ranging from achievements for cleverly using the new events to winning the game as The OG. Of course, each new achievement also unlocks a new hat, so that means theres seven new hats available for your pirates to strut their funky stuff in!
Pirate Customiser
Until now, your pirates look was at the whims of fate. Your only trade-off for getting the hat you wanted was sacrificing the amazing hair you had, and you ended up with a moustache you resented. Not anymore! You can now customise your pirate with much more precision by clicking the palette in the top right of your device when connected to a game lobby! Select from any of the outfit options, choose your hat, or go for that double peg-leg!
New Looks
To celebrate the addition of the new outfit customiser weve also added even more designs and colour combinations - your pirate has never looked more unique. You can create your very own pirate look, and once youve found your favourites, have a pirate look that is all your very own.
Emoji Support
Weve added support to names and messages, allowing you to be more when who you think is a ! With great comes great responsibility, so please obey the code when naming your and with other players!
New Graphics Options
We also heard some people were asking for the ability to resize the game and toggle between windowed mode and fullscreen, so we added it! You can now find a fullscreen toggle in the main options menu. Not only that, but you can resize the window as you see fit in windowed mode! Nice!
Bug Fixes
• Fixed a bug where audio playback would sometimes end prematurely.
  • Fixed a bug where players could sometimes be connected to a game lobby twice.
  • Renamed Clear Sailing to Plain Sailing for clarity and improved messaging.
  • The votes needed message no longer displays off the top of the screen in games with many pirates.
  • The voting threshold line now appears behind the audience count.
  • Votes no longer disappear behind the last command reminder message.
  • Reconnecting during job selection now displays the appropriate screen.
  • Players names no longer obscure a pirates legs and feet in the lobby.
  • The Stowaway has learnt to correctly wear their barrel, and as such it should no longer appear at a jaunty angle.
  • The exorcism event has received an improved animation effect.
  • Audience event selection has been improved so it cannot be manipulated as easily with a small number of pirates in the audience:
  • Audience votes are now weighted against existing events.
  • Events the audience vote for are always more likely to appear, but not guaranteed.

Unfortunately, because of the ongoing COVID-19 situation, were not currently able to get new voice lines for all the added dialogue for this update due to lack of access to equipment :( As soon as were able, well be revisiting all the new text boxes weve added, and our regular narrator will be back to add his usual pirate flair to all the new text in the game.

Dont forget that you can join us on Twitch every Saturday at 8PM BST for a developer stream. This week well be hoping to see some of the new events in action, so well be playing some games with high event counts - anything could happen!

Custom Games and Quality of Life Update

Ahoy swashbucklers!
The latest update for Paper Pirates has just gone live, and with it, we bring you a host of bug fixes, quality of life improvements to improve rejoining a game in progress and to help deal with rowdy pirates, and a new feature that lets you chart your own courses - thats right, custom games with a host of custom settings!
Custom Games
Gotten used to your regular Paper Pirates voyages? Looking to mix it up a bit, and try something more adventurous? The new Custom Games option lets you change a number of settings to customise the game to your liking. Not only that, but theres a brand new achievement for completing a custom game - theres no excuse not to try one!
Number of Players
Custom games raise the maximum player count to ten! Stranded on a desert island and not got enough mateys to join you? Whatever number you set here is the number of pirates youll have aboard your ship, so if you dont fill up the lobby with fellow sailors, well throw in some bots to set sail with you!
Number of Ghosts
More players means more ghosts! Custom games allow you to set how many ghosts come aboard your ship at the start of the game. How spooky are you feeling? Remember that the stowaway cant start the game as a ghost, so you can never have a full ghostly crew!
Distance from Shore and Number of Treasures
Hoping to sail home in time for tea? Perhaps chart a longer voyage for maximum chaos? In a custom game, you can set how much booty your boat starts with, and how far away from shore the boat starts.
Event Frequency
Do you love events? Do you wish they happened all the time? Now they can! With a custom game, you can set how many events occur in your game. Should you decide that youre more detective than pirate, you can even turn events off completely to significantly reduce randomness in your game.
Custom Games and Achievements
To keep things to the pirate code, some achievements arent obtainable through custom games. If youre looking to score one of the following (and its associated hat), make sure you play a regular non-customised game:

  • X Days at Sea
  • Treading Water
  • Greedy for Gold
  • Ocean Pacifists
  • Pieces of Hate
  • Sworn Loyalty
Quality of Life

Rejoining a Game in Progress
Been thrown overboard a little too violently and found yourself disconnected from the game? Weve made some improvements to make it easier to reconnect to a game in progress. Players who have been disconnected will now try to reconnect automatically without needing to refresh their page, and in instances where a manual reconnection is still necessary, players will bypass the room entry page removing the need to re-enter a room code.

Whats more, if you reconnect to a game when youre expected to vote, you will still have the option to cast your vote in that round!
Muting a Rowdy Pirate
If youve got a pirate aboard whos not playing by the rules, and you need to give them a temporary gagging order, you can now click on them to mute them. Any messages they send from their device will not be displayed while theyre muted. Think theyre ready to be trusted again, or mute them by accident? Simply click them again, and they will be unmuted!
Bug Fixes
• Audience player vote buttons now appear in the same order as pirates appear on screen
  • Fixed a bug where the game doesn't end if the stowaway/hostage event occurs with one distance/treasure left respectively
  • Fixed a bug where the captain job selection screen sometimes doesn't change to the captain truth/lie screen
  • Fixed a bug where exiting to the main menu would sometimes not close the server connection cleanly

Dont forget that you can join us on Twitch every Saturday at 8PM BST for a developer stream. This week well be celebrating the update by trying out some custom games - come join them, or join the audience and help pick the events and vote for who you think is a ghost!

Chat and Hats Update

Calling all ye landlubbers!
We've been working hard the past two weeks, in quarantine nevertheless, to bring you an awesome new update - Chat and Hats!

Hats! That's right! We saw that your pirate outfits were looking a bit... lackluster, so this update brings 30 new unlockable hats! Each achievement will unlock a new hat for you to customise your pirate with in the lobby.

We've also listened to your feedback and added an audience mode feature so that people who watch you play can have some agency in the game. Don't worry, if you don't want people to spectate on your game, you can disable spectators completely - but wheres the fun in that?
The full list of awesome new content includes:
• Missed out on a game? Dont panic! Now you can join as a spectator! Jump into a game in progress, using the Room Code, and youll be able to observe that game - plus youll be able to play along, using our new spectator mode features!

  • And we would have got away with it too, if it wasnt for those meddling spectators! Between rounds, the spectators can vote on a choice of events. The more popular the event, the more likely it is to happen. It could be bad news for the Captain if things dont go their way...

  • Spooky sensations! If the audience has a feeling for who might be a ghost, they can get in on the voting action! Make a vote, and the players will find out who the audience suspects after their voting has completed...

  • How many people are in your audience? Check the top right of the screen - weve added an audience tracker, to show how many people are spectating your current game!

  • Ability to turn off the in-game chat features, for when youre playing with less sea-worthy crew members!

  • Earning an achievement is its own reward, but we thought we could do one better. Each achievement now unlocks an extra-special, never-before-seen, cosmetic hat to add more variety to pirate customisation!

  • As if that wasnt exciting enough, some of the most extra-special hats come with an added bonus: animations. Thats right, these hats really move! Time to get working on completing that achievement list!

  • And better yet, hats that follow the motion of the ocean! Weve got some physics going on to make some of the new hats extra special!

  • Unlocked all of the new hats? But where do I put them on? Hats are just where youd expect them - on a pirates head! When customising your pirate in the lobby, keep tapping the head button on your device until you get a hat you love!

  • But how do I know when Ive unlocked a new hat? Dont worry, keep an eye out for any Steam achievements, because theyll also come with the new Hat Unlock popup!

  • Did we mention hats? Were very excited about the hats!

  • We also added Paper Pirates as a recognised game on Twitch, so if youre livestreaming youll now be able to select it as your current game!

Well be moving this week's livestream over to the Iteration Games YouTube channel, so make sure to go check that out for some fun playing with us!
