The People Behind The Trailer
When making a trailer such as the one above, many people from various disciplines come together to create something special. We've taken a moment to share a short behind the scenes video on the creation of the trailer that we hope you'll enjoy: [previewyoutube=1yMKqwxUV_E;full][/previewyoutube] With this trailer it was important to us to stay true to the games roots, so we included a live orchestral track recorded by a selection of traditional and authentic procession musicians, with some of the orchestra having performed during the Holy Week in Seville, Spain. We were also humbled to work with the incredible Sunshine Animation Studio who created the amazing visuals you see for the trailer. We want to extend our thanks to everyone involved in the process, thank you for bringing our vision to life so vividly.
One More Thank You
The team would also like to say another, very special thank you to you, our amazing community. You have made Blasphemous what it is, your time in-game, your words, stories, fan creations, passion and feedback have led us to this point. Thank you Blasphemous Community!

The Path to Penance
Blasphemous began its pilgrimage on Steam on September 10th, 2019. Many of you raised Mea Culpa for the first time on this date, twisting fate to your will as you challenged and triumphed over the twisted, the corrupted and the zealous. Blasphemous Launch Trailer [previewyoutube=Ctm-GClM6wo;full][/previewyoutube] Since that day, many more of you have swelled the ranks of the Brotherhood of the Silent Sorrow, further building a community around Blasphemous that we are humbled to serve. As the community continued to grow, we set about working on your feedback around bug fixes, quality of life improvements and more - all of this driven by what we saw being discussed by you, our players. The Stir of Dawn [previewyoutube=9QdGzJhunb4;full][/previewyoutube] Then, in August of this year we released our first free DLC for Blasphemous, The Stir of Dawn, adding a host of new features including:
- New Game + (True Torment Mode)
- New story quests
- New bosses, prayers and items
- New ways to play via the Penitence system
- New executions
- Visual update and location overhauls
- Map overhaul
- More fast travel options
The Stir of Dawn not only gave us a fantastic opportunity to further build upon Blasphemous with our own ideas, but implement a lot of the great feedback we'd seen from the community around what they'd like to see added / changed about Blasphemous. The best bit? This DLC was and still is absolutely free to everyone that already owns Blasphemous, or decides to purchase it in the future. Spanish VO - Honouring the roots of Blasphemous Some of you may already know this, but The Game Kitchen is a Spanish Developer Team! As such, when creating Blasphemous we took inspiration from our home country, it's architecture and its history. But, we were missing one key part of our home... Its language. This was rectified when we released The Stir of Dawn as it came with a full, optional Spanish voice over for all characters in the game. We were privileged to work with a fantastic and prestigious group of actors, check them out below: [previewyoutube=vKfree2PJ_A;full][/previewyoutube] Just like The Stir of Dawn DLC it was apart of, this content came absolutely free to all our players. Mac & Linux Support Whilst we worked away on the above content, part of the team were busy creating Mac and Linux versions of Blasphemous for their respective communities here on Steam! We're pleased to say that in September of this year those versions became feature complete and arrived on Steam with full parity with the Windows version of the game, including with it The Stir of Dawn DLC and all quality of life patches / fixes the game had seen.
Penance never truly ends
With that, our dear Penitents, we are all but finished with our post where we humbly ask that you vote for Blasphemous to receive Steam's 'Labor of Love' award. Each and every one of your votes will go a long way, and who knows, if the Miracle wills it we may even be blessed with such an accolade! But know this, Cvstodia still has much left to reveal as Blasphemous' next free DLC arrives in 2021! Penitent be the heart.
Greetings Penitents, Today we've updated the Blasphemous OST here on Steam with five new tracks that were added to the game when The Stir of Dawn launched. Created by the Blasphemous' composer, Carlos Viola, the following tracks are now available as a free upgrade for all existing owners of the Blasphemous OST on Steam:
- The Stir of Dawn - 01 - Baile de Violetas (Cello version)
- The Stir of Dawn - 02 - Baile de Violetas (Clavichord version)
- The Stir of Dawn - 03 - Baile de Violetas (Guitar version)
- The Stir of Dawn - 04 - Baile de Violetas (Piano version)
- The Stir of Dawn - 05 - Cinco Miradas Tiene La Aurora
Sinners of the Mac & Linux congregation, Thank you for your patience, now your journey through Cvstodia can truly begin... [previewyoutube=RpN0WeQPixU;full][/previewyoutube] We are pleased to share that today's Mac & Linux drop shares full parity with the current Windows version of the game. This means you will be able to slash your way through The Stir of Dawn, as well as any quality of life patches we have released since Blasphemous launched. For twisted are, were and will be, the paths of the Miracle. https://store.steampowered.com/app/774361/Blasphemous/

Happy first anniversary, Penitent One!
We just wanted to take a moment to mark the occasion and say thank you everyone from all of us at The Game Kitchen for your incredible support - it means the world to us. Just remember, one year of penance may have passed, but we all know penance never truly ends...
Sinners, Thank you all for sharing your thoughts, feedback and bug reports on The Stir of Dawn free DLC. The team have loved hearing about your experiences and really appreciate everyone that took a moment to make us aware of certain issues that needed addressing. Before we dive into the patch notes, a certain person who created the bosses you fight in The Stir of Dawn has a message for you...
A Message From Maikel - The Stir of Dawn
Hello Sinners! It's Maikel, from The Game Kitchen. The response for the release of our free DLC, The Stir of Dawn, has been INCREDIBLE. You've sent us so many kind words over social media, emails, and comments, that it took days and days to read all of that. We're really glad you liked the new content that much: the Penitences System, the spanish VO, and of course the dog-petting opportunities. Thanks a lot for your support, we at the development team are really grateful. Releasing a huge update is not an easy feat though, and unfortunately it also comes with a new batch of issues and bugs. But we've been hammering down non-stop, and there's a lot of fixes coming your way! Those pesky Penitence Rewards will finally be actually granted to worthy penitents, and there's a lot more fixes included. Again, thanks for your support, and I hope you'll keep enjoying Blasphemous.
Patch 1 Notes - Fixes & Optimisations
Optimisations
After receiving reports about performance issues on machines with low specs, we have further optimised the gameplay and UI code. We have also located and fixed a few memory leaks that were causing slowdown after long sessions of gameplay on rare occasions.
Key Fixes
Penitence Rewards - Rosary Beads Fixed an issue that caused Penitences rewards to reset after the credits, so players werent able to access their rewards. This is a retroactive fix, so you will be able to find the corresponding rewards you already earned in your current save slots. Laudes - Post Fight Area Fixed several issues with the location entered after the fight with Laudes, which could cause softlock, weird collisions, and even stop players from getting the reward located there. Tres Angustias - "Dodge this" Fixed an issue that caused Tres Angustias beam attack anticipation to appear outside the screen, so dodging them was only possible with the help of the Miracle. Amanecidas Combat - Fight on! Fixed issues during Amanecidas combats that created weird interactions after interrupting their attacks. This caused them to stop attacking anymore during the fight on rare occasions. Ten Piedad - "You're approaching me?!" Fixed Ten Piedad fight so it can no longer be skipped by using the Linen of Golden Thread.
Other Fixes
- Fixed an issue where the room in Geminos quest could be used to farm tears of atonement.
- Fixed an issue which caused the main menu background selection labels to display incorrect titles.
- Fixed an issue where Bleeding Miracle explosion didnt cause damage to enemies.
- Fixed an issue where players could get stuck inside a wall during a True Torment playthrough.
- Fixed an issue that caused the Penitence Selection menu to behave incorrectly during a second playthrough.
- Fixed an issue where the Chalice of Inverted Verses was not emptied after using a Prie Dieu warp point.
- Fixed a LOT of issues causing diverse achievements to not unlock correctly.
- Fixed map issues that caused some tiles to not reveal on rare occasions.
- Fixed an issue that created duplicates of the Penitent One while button-mashing during the cutest animation in the game. Please, keep petting that dog though, hes a really good boy.
- Fixed an issue where the Ash Mountain wouldnt slow down the Penitent One.
- Fixed an issue that caused Esdras to remain still and refuse to fight back.
- Fixed an issue that caused abandoned Penitences to remain marked as so, even after completing them in a later playthrough.
Penance Never Truly Ends...
That wraps today's patch notes! We hope these fixes bring blessings to your time in Cvstodia, thank you again for your patience and understanding whilst the team addressed what you fed back to us. Penitent be the heart!
And so the long night is severed. Dawn cometh. [previewyoutube=M_kGG-SD8oA;full][/previewyoutube] Dawn has arrived in the land of Cvstodia in Blasphemous: The Stir of Dawn, a free DLC available now for all owners of Blasphemous!
The Stir of Dawn - Patch Notes
To prepare you for your journey into True Torment we've compiled today's Patch Notes below for you. We've also included some extra context from Maikel Ortega, Game Designer on Blasphemous - you can spot his comments in italics!
True Torment: New Game+
- Ascend into True Torment after beating the game at least once.
- You will keep your items, Prayers and Mea Culpa abilities. Master them to advance through this harder version of the game.
The Penitence System
- Choose between one of three Penitences, and face even greater challenges that change the way you approach each playthrough.
- Only available during a True Torment playthrough.
- Successful Penitence completions have their rewards...
The Penitence of the Unwavering Faith severely weakens your normal attacks with Mea Culpa, but adds constant Fervour regeneration! Prayers and abilities will be your main source of damage, so plan your build accordingly, and choose appropriate Rosary Beads and Sword Hearts!
And the final is the Penitence of the True Guilt by far the most punishing of the three. Choosing this Penitence will change your Bile Flasks into Azure Flasks where they will no longer replenish your health, but your fervour instead. And keeping yourself out of harms way is a must in this run, as you will lose all your Guilt Fragments and Tears of Atonement with a single death! Find a Confessor Statue, or retrieve your Fragment, or you will lose all those hard-earned tears too! Only true masters of Blasphemous combat will be able to rise to this challenge.
The Stir of Dawn Questline
- A completely new quest can be started buried deep in the innards of the Holy Line.
- Only available during a True Torment playthrough.
The Amanecidas - Ancient creatures, born and forgotten centuries ago, will wake up from the innards of Cvstodia and try to stop The Penitent One. Find Jibrael, their harbinger, during a True Torment run, and follow his instructions to challenge these gilded wardens of the Miracle. This new storyline includes five completely new boss fights, harder than any other youve faced before in Blasphemous.
Map Screen Overhaul
- The map has been completely redesigned and reworked.
- Custom markers can now be placed anywhere on the map.
- The map now features pixel perfect zoom.
- The percentage of area discovery is now visible in a corner.
Changes to the Core Game
NPC Changes
- A new NPC can be found close to Albero, in the Desecrated Cistern.
- The NPC Soledad has been reworked, and features fully voiced new dialog.
- The NPC Gmino has been reworked, and now features new sprites. His questline has been slightly tweaked.
- New dialog lines have been added to several NPCs and Bosses.
- The Prie Dieu is now upgradeable, allowing for fast travel between the altars.
- Three new Teleports can now be found in Cvstodia.
- New areas and shortcuts have been added to the game.
- Full Spanish voice-over has been added to the game. The voice-over language can be changed in the options menu.
- Some of the existing dialog has been recorded again with a new cast.
- A mysterious alms-box can be found inside the church in Albero.
- Sister of the Charred Visage
- Spear of the Cathedra
- Guardainfante
- Lunatic
- Phalaris
- Wandering Sepulcher
- Carthos
Certain Penitent skills (Charge, Lunge & Counter attacks) will now stun these enemies when used at the right time, enabling an execution.
Art & Cutscenes
Art The following areas now feature new art assets:
- Wasteland of the Buried Churches
- Mercy Dreams
- Grievance Ascends
- Patio of the Silent Steps
- Bridge of the Three Calvaries
- Ferrous Tree
- Wall of the Holy Prohibitions
New dwellers can be found in town, including a completely pettable and very good boy.
Some sprites, including the player's, now feature colour adjustments to better integrate in certain areas. New animations have also been added to the Penitent One. Cutscenes
- New animated cutscenes have been added to the game.
- A new intro cutscene has been added.
- Balance, Quality of Life changes:
Balance Changes: Prayers & Enemies
As a game designer, fine tuning the experience you players will face in our game is always our main priority. This is why we took our time to create a satisfying True Torment mode, but also revisited the base game! Lots of Prayers, Rosary Beads, and even player skills have been revisited, tweaked, and, in some cases, made some pretty big changes. Summon an army of Cherubs with the improved Campanilleros Prayer, or stun your foes with a perfectly timed Sacred Onslaught to the face, leaving them open for a gruesome execution. Prayers
- Damage and fervour costs have been tweaked.
- Several prayers feature visual improvements.
- Prayer behaviour is more consistent and solid.
- A few enemies have been revisited, and now feature better anticipation and recovery times.
- The behaviuor of some enemies has been improved to create a better combat experience. Less unfair situations, smoother and more satisfying combat.
- The player hitbox and damage areas have been tweaked to ensure combat feels fair.
- The charged and lunge attack have been revisited and can now stun enemies in certain situations.
- The ranged attack damage and cost have been rebalanced. Damage now scales with Mea Culpa level.
The Amanecidas Await...
That wraps up today's patch notes! We're incredibly excited for you all to experience this free new content for Blasphemous. Oh and one last word from Maikel: If youre new to Blasphemous, or a veteran pilgrim, Im sure you will deeply enjoy your travels to the updated world of Cvstodia. Sorrowful be the heart. https://store.steampowered.com/app/774361/Blasphemous/
Hello Sinners, Following on from our Torment, Penitence and Amanecidas post earlier this week we wanted to take the opportunity to share even more with you on whats coming in The Stir of Dawn! When creating The Stir of Dawn the team were keen to read through player and community feedback to see what you really enjoyed about your Blasphemous playthrough, as well as what you thought could be further built upon or adjusted to improve your experience with the game. The team spent a lot of time discussing what we learnt from the community and where possible we have implemented it into The Stir of Dawn! To begin, lets start with one of the most commonly requested feature updates - The Map!
Map Overhaul & New Features
Rejoice, the map screen you currently know has been fully overhauled!
When looking at how to improve the map for The Stir of Dawn we approached it from the angle of improving overall usage, readability, practicality and usefulness to the player. We are pleased to confirm the following features in the map overhaul:
- Complete rework of the old screen - Out with the old, in with the new!
- Tile Resolutions - Choose between different handmade tile resolutions to get your ideal setting.
- Map Markers - Manually mark points of interest and other useful locations to aid you in your journey through Cvstodia.
- Map Completion - Wonder no more! The percentage of rooms completed will be visible on the map.
Now weve revealed the new map and how it works, let's take a look at another hotly requested improvement - expanded fast travel!
New Warp Points & Shortcuts!
Warp Points Upon installing The Stir of Dawn update new fast travel options will be available to all players whether theyre playing on New Game or New Game+ modes. On top of the existing fast travel system, players will now be able to upgrade the Prie Dieu altars throughout Cvstodia. Upon doing so they will gain a new look, activating the ability to travel between any previously visited Prie Dieu altars.
This new feature offers a lot of versatility and travel options, minimising excess backtracking and allowing you even more freedom to explore the map. Shortcuts Whispers travel through the townsfolk of Abero, rumours of new shortcuts that are on the cusp of being discovered by the keen eyes of the Penitent One These new shortcuts which well be leaving for you to discover allow for some natural transitions between certain areas to aid you in your travels, if you can find them that is!
Prayer Buffs, Enemy Behaviour and Passive Effects!
Prayers Most of the Prayers in the game have received blessing from the Miracle, increasing their damage or effects for the Penitent One. To reflect these changes their costs have also been tweaked. You should also notice some new visual flair for them too! Rosary Beads, Sword Hearts and Ranged Attack! During our own pilgrimages through Cvstodia we noticed that some of the Sword Hearts and Rosary Beads werent applying their bonuses as intended. This has now been fixed! Weve also given the Penitent Ones ranged attack some attention, rebalancing it so that it now scales in damage and cost based on Mea Culpas level. Enemy Behaviour & Executions Whilst going through your feedback we saw that some players, whilst enjoying the combat, felt that more could be done to make it feel smoother, more responsive and fairer. In The Stir of Dawn weve revisited some enemies who will now feature better anticipation and recovery times. On top of this weve already updated the behaviour of some enemies to create a better combat experience that will feel smoother and reduce the occurrence of situations where the player feels they were beaten unfairly. To further highlight the importance of the above point we have also adjusted the player hitbox to make combat fairer and reward skilful / risky plays!
We were really pleased to see how popular executions have been for everyone. We also saw how many of you wanted to see more instances of them, so weve added a new mechanic that will allow you to instigate an execution through skilled use of your abilities. On top of the existing system, Charged and Lunged attacks can now stun enemies in certain situations, such as a counter attack or striking a foe during the wind up of their attack. Please note, this stun mechanic only works on enemies that can be executed!
Environmental Improvements
Before we sign-off for the weekend and head towards Dawn, we also wanted to highlight that many areas of Cvstodia have received a visual update. We dont want to spoil these as we think youll greatly enjoy seeing as the world has evolved, with new furniture, decorations and background NPCs really bringing the world alive. We will leave a little peek for you below though
Penitent be the heart.

Whilst we have been quiet on what this DLC will contain, let it be known that soon we'll be getting... straight to the point.
Hey everyone, We hope you're all having a great start to 2020! Today we're just dropping a small hotfix to address a couple of issues that we've been able to fix whilst we work on that free DLC we teased at the end of last year. Check out the change list below:
- Fixed a bug where on some occasions, the top floor of the Archcatedral Rooftops could be reached without obtaining the third mask.
- Fixed a bug where certain controllers would not retain their button re-bindings after restarting the game.
- Fixed a bug where if the player collected all cherubs before visiting Jocinero for the first time, they would not receive the rewards.
Hi everyone!
I'm Maikel, from the design team at Blasphemous. I just wanted to take this chance to thank you all out there, on behalf of the whole team at The Game Kitchen.
When we started this project, back in 2017, we couldn't imagine this getting so much attention. Not even close! The amount of love and support that Blasphemous has got after we released it 3 months ago it's astounding. We owe you a lot, and that's why we wanted to share some things with you.
Last week, Blasphemous got not one, but two awards at the Fun & Serious game festival! We were nominated alongside really awesome games, so it's an incredible honor to bring these awards home.
But more importantly, and as you might already imagine after reading the post title, we've been working really hard in some juicy tweaks and changes. The last patches were focused on fixing stuff that was broken and squashing bugs. But this one, the biggest update in Blasphemous so far, it's focused on YOUR feedback.
We've been listening and reading your comments on the steam forums, reddit, twitter, your emails... You name it. We've had little time to reply to most of you (as there were a lot!), but we've been busy working! With this patch, we tried to make Blasphemous feel better and more accessible than ever, refining and polishing the experience as much as possible without actually changing the core game.
Without further ado, I'll leave you with the patch notes. Stay until the end!
The Game Kitchen.

Thank you for your support everyone, we'll have some news on our next patch soon as well as what you can look forward to in 2020!
Hey Sinners, As we work on upcoming patches and new content for Blasphemous weve been taking note of everyones feedback, seeing what you like and what you feel could do with some extra attention. Recently the team took to Reddit to share our thoughts and what were looking to do in the near future, so we thought wed share it with everyone here on Steam too! Please give a warm welcome to Enrique, Lead Level Designer on Blasphemous and bringer of platforming answers Platforming, guilt and those spike pits Hi, I'm the main level designer for Blasphemous and I want to take this opportunity to talk about some of the feedback weve been seeing around certain elements of the game. Guilt Fragments left in spike pits I hate this bug as much as you do, guys, I really do! Luckily when we discovered it there were workarounds that could "patch" this issue under the current game terms - Killing bosses and using confessors would retrieve all lost guilt fragments, including the ones that were misplaced in spike pits or other hard to reach places. Why and how does this happen? Well the reason is simple: Guilt Fragments record constantly safe positions on solid ground to remember where to spawn if the player dies. The problem was that, when dying on spikes, physics where still enabled, the Penitent One was still affected by gravity and sometimes it recorded the ground under the spikes as a safe position. This is what caused the issue. Thankfully for everyone here on Steam, this has already been patched with the console version on the way along with several other important fixes found after release thanks to you, the community. Platforming, ladders and nailing that jump For patch 1.0.10 we're aiming for a big update on how platforming feels in Blasphemous. Not only will it improve how you land, but also how jumping works. When looking further into how these actions worked we found small but very important problems when performing these two actions. Navigating jumping puzzles and challenging areas should feel much smoother once this patch is live. We feel that these changes will have a big impact on the sense of unfairness that platforming could have in Blasphemous, making deaths feel deserved rather than cheap. Punishment - Straight to the point! If you ask me, spikes are not the problem: the punishment for falling on them is, and especially when players don't feel that is their fault. In the case of spike deaths, instakills feels like a really mean punishment, even if the player can retrieve their guilt and keep their Tears of Atonement. We're still committed to keeping instakill as part of the experience, but we're considering a few ways to ease the player's frustration around this particular trap. Weve noticed that most of the reviews for Blasphemous include a mention of the spike traps and platforming in the list of negatives about our game. They are actually what lowered our review score in most cases. This is why we wanted to do something about it as soon as possible, were watching, were listening and were taking action! So yeah, message received! We'll do our best to keep improving and building upon the foundations of Blasphemous. Thank you all for your continued feedback and support.
Our Steam publisher sale is now live, offering up to 80% on various games, DLC and even soundtracks!
Click here to check out what's on offer! Included in this sale are the recently released Blasphemous and Overcooked! 2 'Carnival of Chaos' DLC, early access titles Hell Let Loose and Monster Sanctuary AND some of our older classic titles too! Happy gaming!
Sinners, Following Patch 1 weve continued to collate your bug reports and feedback, thank you for sharing them with us. Thanks to your efforts weve worked with righteous fury to address them and as such have a hotfix to address more issues ahead of our next formal patch.
