Steam Awards: Sit Back and Relax

Hello Pachans

We are still amazed by the love and support our game received in 2023 (and before). Timo and I started this game development journey from our shared passion for the farm sim genre. A genre that, for many people, including us, is a way to chill and relax after a busy day.

Our game was designed so you can play at your own pace without fear of missing out. Yes, time, days, and seasons pass by, but you can complete the game as you please without any penalty. Enjoy a day of fishing on the beach, ride with your faithful mount through the savanna, or just chill with the rest of the Pachans inside the Hearth on a rainy day.

If you enjoyed chilling with Roots of Pacha, please consider nominating us for the Sit Back and Relax category or any other category you'd like.

https://store.steampowered.com/steamawards/nominations

Also, if you haven't written a review yet, please do so. It helps us a lot.

Update 1.1
Our next patch is just around the corner, launching next week on Nov. 28th, along with Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 and 5.

To read about whats in the 1.1 update, check out our previous devlog: https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1245560/view/3726225245968208731

Devlog 40: 1.1 Update and Consoles

[previewyoutube=s7ENf7LZDvE;full][/previewyoutube]

Roots of Pacha will be on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 and 5 on November 28th! Xbox will follow with a release early next year. We are so excited to bring the game to so many more people. Players can join their friends in these Pachan lands no matter which platform they play on with cross-play.

If any Xbox backers would like to change their key to Nintendo Switch, Playstation, or Steam they can update their key request here: https://rootsofpacha.com/orders/. Since console keys are region-dependent, we will follow up soon on how to let us know your region.

Were so grateful to all who supported us through this process. And of course, thank all the Kickstarter backers who made this all possible.

Tame this ancient animal starting in year two to gather milk or fur. These cuties will have their own unique song for you to play and earn their trust. We have a feeling these animals will play a role in how the game evolves in future updates.

Take a load off by sitting on your beautiful decorations and get some of that all-important stamina back. Its a detail we have been wanting to do for a while.

Voda is now a romanceable. We dont want to spoil too much about her story. But youll join her out in the woods with the wolves and take a trip to the jungle.

Did you form a Union too soon? Youll now be able to break that union if you choose. Your partner will be upset for a bit, but in true Pachan fashion, they will forgive you after some time.

Once you get enough friendship, NPCs will show appreciation for you by sending smoke signals with gifts attached. Some gifts will be recurring with things like bones and fur, while others will be one-of-a-kind.

These one-of-a-kind gifts will include:

 • 16 new dishes and their recipes
 • 10 new hats/masks
 • 11 new furniture pieces
 • 2 new accessories.

Decorate your home with your friend's gifts like this cozy bench from Jag or the tree made of tree from Krak. Get fancy new hats like a set of deer antlers from Igrork. Or get enough friendship with Vuak that he gives you a magic ring that makes friendship never decay.

Having the ability to get your own meat was a recurring request by the community and one we wanted to make sure made sense in the current and future state of the game. Many in the community had excellent ideas we considered, some of which we may revisit.

To get your own meat, you can use traps in the Savanna or raise animals to send to Grob for butchering. This is entirely optional as no content is locked behind getting meat but youll be able to get quality meat to make high-quality dishes.

With Adas new Idea, you can grow herbs and mushrooms with these decorative and useful items. Grow some oregano for your cooking or lavender to get rid of pesky fleas.

Play a trick with Igrork or learn more about Brah and Vors brotherly relationship. Get to know Vuak and Maeris long history. See a friendlier side of Tetih after shes had a few of Rons brews.

Thirteen new cutscenes have been added to expand the Pachan stories. We hope you enjoy learning more about the world and its people.

The race maps were given a glow-up with a bit more creative polish. We hope you enjoy their new look.

Lots of performance optimizations have been added to the game. We dont have a cool graphic for this, but it would have to be something like a cave lion jumping over a house. Impressive stuff.

Weve rebalanced the end game tree fruits, lowering most of their costs significantly. And added a brand new one that makes it so an animal will never get sick again if you give it to it!

Fish will also have quality levels to make high-quality fish dishes.

The game can now also be played in the Japanese language. And as promised, cross-platform play will be available with Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 & 5. Xbox will be coming early next year.

Weve got two new regions, children growing up, plant and animal evolution, and more in the works. We will keep folks updated along the way as we continue to expand content for the game and fulfill all the kickstarter stretch goals we are all so excited about.

Thank you all for your support. And if you havent left a review on Steam, we would greatly appreciate it. It means a lot.

You rock!

Devlog #39

Hello Pachans!

We have so many exciting things in the works, such as being included in the upcoming Save and Sound event on September 11 at 11 am PDT. To celebrate, we put together a behind-the-scenes look into the music of Roots of Pacha, along with a short performance. Were so excited to be alongside so many excellent games! We hope you enjoy the show.
Consoles & Update 1.1
Work on consoles has been going well and is on track to be released later this year!

While working on consoles, we discovered how much attention they would need, so we adjusted the list of features for update 1.1. This update will launch for all platforms, including Steam, on the day of the consoles release. The current list of features to be included in 1.1 is:

 • Voda romanceable
 • New Friendship cutscenes with non-romanceable characters (Ron/Tetih, Brah/Vor, Maeri/Vuak, Igrork, Gin, Zelk)
 • NPC gifts given by smoke signals
 • Ability to Break a Union and corresponding schedules and dialogues
 • New Savanna animal unlocked in Year 2
 • Japanese support
 • Performance optimizations
 • Smaller QoL and bug fixes

Depending on how the remaining work on consoles goes, were also exploring including some of these:

 • New Union locations
 • Optional Hunting/Gathering Minigame
 • Traps
 • Growable mushroom/herb pots
After 1.1
We originally wanted to include children growing to the kid stage and animal & plant evolution in 1.1, but those will now be in a future update. Heres some WIP of those features.

Seeing everyone play and enjoy the game has been an amazing experience. As a small team, we want to ensure the updates get as much love and attention as the base game. After 1.1, we will keep updating the game next year as we have grand plans to add two more regions and more features to the mid and end-game.

We think it will be worth the wait, and as always, well keep you updated on how the development is going.

QoL Update Live Now!

Hello, Pachans!
The first step of the Roadmap is already here. The Quality of Life update is now live! There is so much fun to discover, like:

Smilodon outfit. We love fashion and know this new outfit will make you smile.

New romanceable NPC. Enjoy more cozy moments with Jag in three new flower cutscenes and maybe even form a Union with him.

Pacha tree fruit. Once you complete the Pyramid, you'll be able to exchange for Pacha fruit that grants different boons to make your life easier. Be sure to save a good amount of contributions. You'll need them.

+50 new decos. A set of new elegant decorations is available to exchange with Reese. You can make your home even cozier with the new pots, furniture, and lighting fixtures in bronze, silver, and gold varieties.

Moving buildings. Did you find a better spot for your home? Now you can relocate idea builds and your hut by talking to Croll.

Flower cutscene indicator. It can be easy to lose track of relationships when you're busy in the fields. A new cutscene indicator will help you know which villager is waiting to share a special moment.

Magic Hand Axe. Complete all the challenges in the caves to get this dream tool.

Jukk, the stylist. For 500 contributions, you can ask Jukk to refresh your style.

Obsidian mirror. Tired of that hairstyle or tattoo? This mirror is more than just an elegant home accessory. Change your appearance by interacting with it.

Your house, your rules. If you pass out in your house, you will still wake up there.

And more! The full changelog is listed below

We hope you enjoy the QoL update and have as much fun as we did making it. Stay tuned for more updates as we progress along the Road Map.

Also, if you havent left a review yet, we would greatly appreciate it if you would.

You rock!

Roots of Pacha Roadmap

First of all,

A little over a month has passed since the 1.0 release of Roots of Pacha. We couldnt be happier with the initial reception of the game and cant thank all of you enough. Your feedback and kind words have made us even more excited to see Roots of Pacha reach its full potential.

Were also super excited to be included in the Cozy & Family Friendly Games Celebration! If you havent grabbed a copy theres a 10% discount during the event.

Were happy to see so many people making it to the end of the main story, enjoying the village they worked hard to create, watching their families grow, finding those rare and legendary animals, and even starting new saves to do it all over again! We think everyone will be extra excited to see what we have in store.

Driven by the setting, we took the risk of interweaving many of the systems in Roots of Pacha as it felt natural to make the community work as a real one. We feel this made RoP a unique take on a farming sim, with systems growing on top of each other like the farms you cultivate. To be able to achieve the same feeling, our current plan is to do 2 larger updates with a small patch leading up to them.

Beyond the Quality of Life patch, we can only commit to a general timeframe as we want to ensure the updates are of the highest quality and not rushed. As we get further along in development, well be able to give you exact dates and in the meantime, well share our progress via Discord and occasionally social media too.

A small update with a group of quality-of-life features, the promised localization fixes, and some commonly requested player feedback, which will come in the following weeks.

This update will focus on an expansion of the current systems. That includes children growing to the kid stage, plant and animal evolution, new Union locations, another romanceable option, the ability to break your union, and more interactions with pets. We also plan to expand the end-game content and include smaller details like players being able to sit in places around the world and other community suggestions.

Wed like to launch this update along with consoles. Theyre separate processes that are currently being worked on in parallel, so were hopeful theyll be ready at about the same time later this year.

This update will include a whole new level of content, like kids growing to teen years and ball sport from the Kickstarter stretch goals, but it will mainly consist of being able to visit the Mograni and Yakuan settlements. Youll be able to explore their regions, the Tundra and Turtle Islands, find new fauna and flora, discover Ideas, meet new characters (some being romanceable), and dive into new caves. This will be a much larger update that will take more time to create. Our plan is for this one to come out sometime next year.

As we mentioned before, we cant commit to exact dates for the updates yet as we want to make sure theyre meaningful and fully tested before they reach your hands. Were confident that our team will be able to deliver it in an acceptable time frame.

Thank you all for following us on this journey. If you havent already, wed greatly appreciate it if you could leave us a review on Steam. It helps a lot.

You rock!

1.0.9

Changelog

Feats
- Added an experimental setting to set the duration of a day to one of 3 options: 15 minutes (recommended), 17.5 minutes (long), and 20 mins (longest). You need to choose it before you start/load a game, the setting is found in the Main Menu under Settings/Gameplay.
- Added generic gamepad support. This should take care of the issues some players are having with controllers not being detected.

Fixes
- Random game crash/hang. It happened with more frequency in late games but also impacted the early stages of the game.
- Waterwheel not controlling if storage was full to start/end production.
- All seeds available in the nursery, even if not discovered, after unlocking the field in the jungle.
- Golden pomegranate resetting animal friendship instead of maxing it.
- Pausing the game with P could lead to time errors and exploits. Its no longer possible to fully pause with P while in any UI.
- Some NPCs were going to a rock near the central fire to start their work tasks while their buildings were being built.
- Nearby irrigation systems would lock others when watered and prevented draining/pumping.
- Placing the waterwheel was checking for nearby objects and could soft-lock players.
- A recipe couldnt be obtained after the conditions were met. Arroz Con Leche is now correctly given by the Yakuans.
- Strange behavior when adding to a stack of items in the belts/storage boxes.
- Item duplication in multiplayer when removing items in processors that need multiple items, such as casks and picklers.
- Cant remove small things placed in the wall behind the bed.
- Wall decorations layered over some objects like the Pacha Statue in the last house upgrade.
- Cat Pot limited drawable area.
- Depending on the day, ores in the first sand room make it impossible to reach the torch.
- NPC schedule errors and overlaps.
- Typos and dialogue conditions.

Notes
If you're using an original console controller (Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS4, PS5, Switch Pro), we recommend you to "Disable Steam Input." You can do this in Steam by right-clicking the game-> Properties->Controller.

Devlog 34: It takes a village

Hello Pachans!

April 25th is around the corner, and were so excited for you to play the game!

Before diving into the amazing journey its been developing the game, here are a few important things to note.
Beta and Backer Keys
As the release on April 25th is fast approaching, weve been working on the keys distribution website to ease the process of delivering them.

Now, you can manage your platforms at https://rootsofpacha.com/orders. You can switch platforms freely up until April 10th. On that day, the beta will end, well invalidate all Steam beta keys and reissue Steam release keys. Any copies set to Steam will be locked for further changes. Youll still be able to change copies from any console to Steam after April 10th, just keep in mind that if you do, youll be issued a Steam key and wont be able to switch back to a console.
Release and Roadmap
On April 25th, Roots of Pacha 1.0 will be released on Steam for Windows & Mac!

In the following sections, we will dive into all the work weve done to have a 40+ hour game. Well also call out the places where weve laid down the groundwork for future updates. We are committed to adding all the Kickstarter stretch goals and features that expand on the 1.0 end-game.

After the game releases, well first focus on making sure the game is stable and a bug-free experience. Then, well begin the process of porting and testing the game on consoles. As this happens, we will be able to share what our expected roadmap is for the remaining content.
Player Character Customization
Weve added further customization options for your player character. Youll be able to select one of 3 body types and pair it with one of 9 face options.

You will also be able to choose from 15 skin tones, 34 hairstyles and 30 colors, 10 styles of facial hair, and outfits to fully express your stone-age self.
Flora of Pacha
There are more than 30 plants that grow natively in the regions of the world. Initially, youll need to discover where they grow and collect their seeds to plant them in your fields.

If you were a beta player, youll notice that wild plants will now only yield seeds. We made this change to better balance the game and make harvesting that much more rewarding.

As you keep planting them, youll gain knowledge thatll change how the plant looks, reveal its growth cycle, and increase the value of its yield. Youll also be able to propagate seeds when you discover the Idea of a plant nursery.

Youll also discover Ideas that will change how you farm: a composter to create different kinds of plant food and soil improvements, a beehive to promote their symbiotic relationship with plants, and eventually, an irrigation system.

Weve updated the irrigation system to fit better with advanced tools that affect 3, 6, or 9 tiles at a time. Now, the middle tile in between two irrigation trenches will also be watered.
Fauna of Pacha
There are 7 tameable animals: Ibex, Ostrich, Wild Boar, Guanaco, Bison, Jungle Fowl, and Steppe Horse. Each with 10 variations to befriend and domesticate. On some days, youll find rare and even legendary variants hanging out with the herd.

Once you tame these animals, they are your responsibility to feed and care for as they may get upset tummies, coughs, or fleas, and youll need to give them some medicine.

Once you discover the Idea of animal breeding, youll be able to raise their stats and get higher-quality produce from your well-cared-for friends.

After the 1.0 release, we will introduce animal evolution, where youll breed animals to get more modern-day equivalents.
The Caves
As you traverse the mysteries of the caves, youll gain new powers, discover new materials to craft with, develop new ideas, and evolve your tools.
The Lands & Neighboring Clans
Youll be able to explore the land you settled, the nearby forest, the depths of the caves, the expansive savanna, and the calm waters of the beach. Along the way, youll meet a few characters from two neighboring clans, the Yakuans of Turtle Islands and the Mograni of the Tundra.

After the 1.0 release, players will be able to continue their stories and visit these areas. Its also where we plan to introduce the Kickstarter stretch goals of camping, ball sport, the volcano cave, and fishing by boat.
Home Sweet Home
Youll be able to personalize your home with over 200 types of furniture and decorations. After you complete the Idea of an art station, it will unlock the ability to paint your own canvases and pottery to get even more creative with your space.
Pets
In the 1.0 release, youll find 5 different pets and can invite up to 3 to live with you in a fully upgraded house. Youll be able to pet them and have them follow you.

After the release, we plan on adding more interactions with your pets.
Friendship
Pachans love to dance, and with the right amount of friendship, theyll dance with you too. It was important to us to create more ways to interact with the clan other than just gifting and talking.

In the 1.0 release, there are a number of world cutscenes with non-romanceable characters that we felt helped tell the story of who the clan is. All players in co-op will experience these at the same time.

Romanceable characters also have 3 personal events (at 6, 8, and 10 flowers). Since we wanted you to experience all characters stories, the first 2 can be seen as either a hangout with a friend or as a date.

In co-op, for the personal cutscenes, other players will go about their business as youre whisked off to spend time with that character. Some of these events have different endings depending on what options you choose.

After the 1.0 release, well continue adding more cutscenes to help deepen the clans stories.
Romance
Youll be able to date 11 characters after seeing their 6 flowers cutscene. You can choose to date or not, which will influence the way you experience the 8 flower cutscene. The 10-flower cutscene is exclusively a date.

There is no penalty for dating all romanceable characters at the same time, although you can only form a Union with one. Actions, like kissing, will unlock if you date an NPC long enough.

In the 1.0 release, you will be able to form a Union with any of the romanceable characters by the Pacha Tree. In a future update, youll be able to choose your union location. And if desired, break your Union.
Children
Once you have a fully upgraded house and youre in a Union, with either a character in the game or another player, youll be able to let Pacha know youd like a child. With a little time, she will grant your wish, and a little one will appear.

Cute as they are, infants are a lot of work and will need you to check in on them and take care of their needs throughout the day, or youll wake up tired from a poor night's sleep. The clan is there to help, but your child needs you too.

Once your little one is old enough, theyll have their naming ceremony to become a toddler. As a toddler, youll experience new things, like teaching them to walk and start to talk.

After the 1.0 release, we plan to expand this and allow you to see your children grow into more life stages.
Pachan Festivals and Events
The clan loves to appreciate the world around them and celebrates in:

 • Cave Painting - paint your history on the cave walls
 • Clan Gathering - submit the secret judges favorite dish
 • Fall Carnival - compete in a music festival
 • New Year's Eve - ring in the new year watching the northern nights and hearing a story
 • Competition Day - compete in a variety of mini-games to win prizes
 • Winter Festival - chat with the clan and have a grand snowball fight
 • Racing Days - Once you discover racing, youll be able to race twice a season against other characters

We want you to not feel rushed as you play, so are aiming to expand the number of festivals and possible activities (like the stretch goal ball sport) as we update the game and add the homeland of the Yakuans and Mograni.
Discoveries & Collections
There are plenty of things to discover in Roots of Pacha.

 • Explore the lands to find seeds or trade for some to grow over 30 types of plants in your fields.
 • Develop 29 different ideas to change the way the clan lives.
 • Cook over 70 unique recipes to become an experienced chef
 • Catch over 40 species of fish in different spots and seasons
 • Gather over 40 types of materials to craft or contribute around the land
 • Increase your contribution by processing and preserving food in over 30 ways.
 • Complete all the prophecies
Steam Achievements
We had a lot of fun coming up with over 50 achievements. For those that like achievement hunting, we hope you have fun with them!
Thank You
Roots of Pacha is created from a place of love. When we look at the game, its easy for us to see each of the team's contributions to the whole. Like Pachans, we worked together to create something bigger than ourselves and went on a journey that was new for us all.

We say it every devlog, but it feels even more important for this one, thank you. Thank you for going on this journey with us. Thank you to the backers who helped fund this project. Thank you to those that supported us and helped spread the word of Pacha. And thank you to the community for all your kindness.

Thank you all for your support. We cant wait to hear all of your feedback on the release.

Devlog 31: Happy RoP Year!

Hello Pachans!

We hope you're having a great start to the year.

Lets ring in the New Year, the year of Roots of Pacha, by sharing some of our latest developments. In this Devlog, well focus on new decor and art portraits.

As we mentioned in our previous devlog, our updates leading up to release may seem smaller than usual. We want some of Pachas mysteries to be revealed only when its time.
Cozy Beginnings
To start the year with some cozy vibes we put some of the winter soundtrack on YouTube for your listening pleasure.
Home Sweet Home
Your home is becoming cozier and cozier. Weve added more decor to the game so that you can take your customization further and truly make your space unique.

Some of these new decorations include pots and fillers to brighten up your home. You can place these items on furniture around your home.

Weve also added new rug varieties for you to combine and design your spaces.

Furniture is, of course, one of the most important pieces in any given space. Add a touch of elegance with gilded chairs or keep things rustic with simple wood-carved designs. Some items only become available after completing certain Ideas, such as The Toolstation and discovering how to work with obsidian.
New Expressions
We have also continued work on displaying a variety of emotions from our Pachans, specifically by adding new portraits that better convey their current mood.

As always, thank you all for your support. See you in the next devlog as we get closer to the finish line!

You rock!

Devlog 30: Wild new friends

Hello Pachans! Its hard to believe that the year is almost over! As always, a lot has been accomplished in this last month. This time, well be highlighting animals and cooking.
A Prophecy
Look to the sky (or the smoke signals channel in Discord) on December 5th for a brand new trailer for Roots of Pacha! What makes this particular trailer exciting, however, is it contains the long-awaited release date announcement.
Animals
Animals have been our friends for a while in Roots of Pacha. We care for them and, in return, they share their produce with us. Animal variants have been added to the game, as well as a stats system and breeding mechanics.

Weve already invited baby mammoths into our homes, and now weve added a few new animal species that have us howling. Youll find these baby beasts in various parts of the world where youll work to gain their trust. We hope youll have fun discovering what lurks deep within the caves or who may be hiding in the grass.
Cooking
The way to a Pachans heart is through their stomach! With this in mind, weve added a variety of new and exciting dishes for you to cook up for the clan.
The Last Month to Win Beta
This will be the last month to win access to the Beta by playing our Discord mini-game! In celebration of both the holiday season and our upcoming release date announcement trailer, we are doubling the number of winners this month! So be sure to join our Discord and play the mini-game for a chance to win one last time.
Future Devlogs
As we edge closer to the release, our devlogs have gradually grown shorter. Discovery is an important aspect of the game. With this in mind, we dont want to spoil too much of the content awaiting you in the final game. To balance being informative and leaving some surprises for you, well do our best to continue keeping you informed without going into too much detail.

Thanks for being on this journey with us. Your support means the world to us. We hope you enjoy the trailer on December 5th and can help us spread the word to your friends, families, and communities. You rock!

Devlog 29: Baby Pachan cha cha cha cha
The Demo
The demo is up until Nov 14th if youd like to give it a try. You can play solo or with up to 3 other friends in co-op for the first 8 days (10 if you use code D3M0PLUS2). To read more about the demo (and get more codes) check out our previous post.
Children & Unions
Our clan is expanding! Were particularly excited about how this part of the game is shaping up. Youll be able to care for a newborn that grows into a toddler with your special someone. We also laid the groundwork for them to grow up in a post-release update.

Players will also be able to form a union and have children with another player. This was a feature we wanted to make sure was included at release.
Waterwheel
Were working on a waterwheel so that the clan can harness the power of water to make processing things easier. This idea is something pretty advanced for stone age life, so something that will need a higher prosperity level.
Summary
After the day ends, youll see what you and the clan have accomplished and how you are prospering. Your prosperity level is what will trigger certain events, like the clans ability to expand their lands. Its not just your contributions anymore.
Backer updates
If you're a Kickstarter backer with physical rewards, your items are shipping at the end of the month! Please verify your address by Nov 14th. We wont be able to accept changes after then.

Thank you for being on this journey with us. Were looking forward to announcing our 1.0 release date sometime next month.

The Demo Is Back
The demo is back for the DreamHack Beyond Indies Showcase! Enjoy the first 8 in-game days (with 2 more bonus days when you use code: D3M0PLUS2).
For more fun, enter these codes:
Decorative Pacheems Statue: PACH33MS
Bunny Hat: LILBUNNY
Smilodon Hat: SMILEY
Item for max animal friendship (golden Pomegranate): ELDORADO

How to redeem:
1. Open the main in-game menu and go to SETTINGS category.
2. Select SESSION subcategory.
3. Select the option REDEEM CODE and enter one of the above unlocked codes.
FAQ
I played the demo in June, is it any different?
Its the same demo.

What can I do?
Since we wanted to make the many aspects of the game available, it may feel a little rushed to some. You can befriend animals, farm, develop ideas, explore the caves, and chat with the rest of the clan. You can start as many saves as you like to experience the many aspects. It will just stop on day 8 (or 10 if you entered the code).

Will demo progress carry over to release?
The demo is a condensed trial of the full game, so saves will not carry over.

It closes when I try to open it
This happens with some antivirus programs that dont recognize the game. Check to see if its in quarantine or needs to be whitelisted on your computer. If this doesnt fix it join us in Discord and we should be able to help.

How long can I play?
Play up to 10 in-game days solo or with up to 3 other friends in co-op until Nov 14th. Each day is about 15 minutes long.

Have fun! We hope to see you in discord!

Devlog 28: A step closer to Pacha's secrets
Greater Depths
Weve made some big strides in development with the near completion of the caves, expanding on fishing, the characters stories, and creative mechanics in the game.
Fishing
We expanded the number of fishy friends in the world. Fish now have specific regions and times in which they can be caught. As you fish, youll gain knowledge about what you catch.

This newfound knowledge will make their silhouettes appear in the mini-game quicker and increase the fishs quality. Youll also be able to keep track of your biggest catch in the collections tab.
A Friend Indeed
We continued work on cutscenes by adding new animations and portraits to bring more life to the characters stories. This last month Era, Jukk, Garrek, and Vallah had their stories expanded.
Caves
Within the caves, youll meet spirits and borrow their powers to find your way through the great halls of the underground. Youll uncover new areas and corridors that conceal Pachas secrets.

We continued to expand this important region from last month to give it all the love it deserves.
WIP Art Station
We started work on the clans art station which will allow you to get creative in how you decorate your home and village.
Backer Updates
In case you missed our last devlog, all who pre-purchased Roots of Pacha during the Kickstarter now have access to the Beta version of the game. If you havent already requested a key and would like to join the Beta, please request your key here: https://rootsofpacha.com/orders/

Thank you all for your support.

Devlog 27: The summer competition festival

Hello Pachans! Another month of hard work has passed. Weve continued to expand NPC animations, portraits, and their stories. Now, in this devlog, we will focus on a brand new festival and the expanded caves.
Update on Release
We have decided to move Roots of Pachas release to early 2023. We have aimed to be as transparent as possible and need more time to deliver the experience we promised and the one we all dreamed of playing.

Game development is an iterative process with many interconnected systems that all need time and energy dedicated to them. The team is comprised of talented individuals who have both met and exceeded expectations regarding the alpha, beta, and demo. We are incredibly proud of these accomplishments so far.

With that said, even with a talented team and the quick pace were working at, we unfortunately lacked the experience to gauge how much time it would take to create the game we promised you all. To achieve the level of quality we want and that you all expect and deserve, we would rather take the necessary time to deliver. Were confident it will be worth the wait. We may not have made our 2022 projection, but we arent far off either. We can see the finish line and need a little more time before we can give you an exact release date. Were looking to announce a final release date in December.

We will continue to post devlogs to keep you updated on our progress as we take transparency very seriously. Our goal is to be as honest and forthcoming as we can with you.

For our Kickstarter Backers, we are forever grateful that you chose to support the development of the game that allowed us to grow our team and make our collective dream a reality. So, as a token of our never-ending gratitude, wed like to ease the wait a little by inviting you to join the Beta. To receive your Steam Key, just enter the email you backed with here (https://rootsofpacha.com/orders/) and a key will be sent to you.
The summer competition festival
Pachans are ready for some summer fun at the Beach! We added a competition festival to the clan's calendar so you can have tons of fun with the communitys minigames.

Join Grob and Touk at the target shooting with spears; play bones with Ron and Tetith; share food and hang out with Anda and Illoe; dance with Zeda and Vallah; watch Krak create a sand sculpture, and enjoy a host of other events!

Celebrate and join in on the festivities. Fun is guaranteed with the clan!
New animal caves
The caves have expanded by several rooms and now contain two new totems: Monkey and Bear. Youll discover new resources like copper that will help change the way the clan lives.

Once you complete Monkey and Bears challenges, youll use their powers to find passageways with Monkey's leaps of faith or muscle your way through obstacles using Bears strength.

On your way to the cave's completion, youll find hidden rooms and other mysteries along the way.

Thank you for following our development journey with your continued support! The team is truly grateful for it. Stay tuned for more news!

Devlog 26: The Pyramid mysteries

Since last July, the team has been working hard to bring more depth and complexity to the Roots of Pacha experience and theres still more to come!
New cutscenes
We continued to create cutscenes to breathe more life into our characters' stories, specifically Ibon, Jelrod, Touk, and Krak's. We want to make sure the moments you spend with these Pachans are special.
New expressions
We've also been working on portraits, specifically by adding a variety of expressions. Several of our Pachans can now blush, smile, be surprised, contemplate, and more!
New clothes
We adore fashion and the wide range of clothing choices in Roots of Pacha so we've developed an even greater variety of outfits. Each player can now play stylishly dressed in their preferred attire.
Collections
Keep track of what youve found in the world and whats left to discover.
Jungle pyramid
You may remember some rumbling about a Pyramid in past devlogs. Well, weve given extra attention to it this time around, along with the jungle map. New mysteries will be revealed as a series of challenges are completed. But worry not, your clan is there to help you accomplish even the greatest of feats.

As we always say, we can't thank you enough for your support. Your feedback contributes to the development of Roots of Pacha and its eventual release. Take care and stay tuned for more information! See you in the next devlog.

Devlog 25: A new way back home

We had a pretty amazing June! We started off with Day of the Devs and the associated Play Days event, IGN Summer of Gaming , Steam Next Fest, and releasing a demo alongside it all. Seeing our work in the limelight has been an unbelievable experience, but nothing can top the amount of love weve received from people playing the demo.

With so many players, weve received helpful feedback that were incorporating into the game. Some examples include a way to return from the top of the Forest mountain without retracing your steps, increasing options in the character creator, and more!

One of the incredibly exciting parts has been seeing our community grow. We grew so much this month that all 5 fires were lit in the Discord mini-game!
Cutscenes
Weve been busy creating storylines, music, and animations to bring another layer of depth to the game. In this last month, weve given a little extra attention to Illoe and Garrek.
New Processors
The clan has more Ideas in the works such as a pickler, vinegar maker, brewer, and cask. Youll be able to process your crops into something that lasts a little longer and is more valuable to the clan when you contribute it.
Map Redesigns
We already had a beautiful waterfall in place, so it seemed like a fun idea to be able to go behind it. Now, players will be able to find their way back home by taking a shortcut to the bottom of the hill. So those late-night trips back from the caves should be a little less stressful.

The landscape of the Savanna is also receiving a few changes to add more diversity and detail to the landscape.
The Future
With the knowledge gained from our Beta and the demo shortly thereafter, we plan to go full nose to the grindstone (while of course maintaining a healthy life for the team) in these upcoming months and focus on what is essential to get us to a solid 1.0 release. Our future devlogs will likely be sparse compared to our usual updates or include [redacted]s so that we can avoid spoiling too much.

As always thank you for your support.

You rock!

Devlog 24: Demo Festival

Were celebrating our upcoming demo Pachan style with a Festival! Besides the release of the demo, we have a few exciting events planned this month, including a segment in Day of The Devs (a part of the Summer Game Fest), streams, and more! Be sure to tune in at 11 am on June 9th for the kick-off of Summer Game Fest. We think youll like our segment.
The Demo
Most demos are around 30-60 mins long, but the Roots of Pacha demo will be eight in-game days or approximately two hours. We went into detail about whats included in Devlog 23.

The community will have a chance to get two more days (about 30 minutes of playtime) by unlocking fires in the Demo Festival Challenge.

A Collective Experience
During the Kickstarter, we had a social media challenge where the community could achieve smaller stretch goals without backing the project. This support helped us reach a larger audience and was a way for anyone to contribute to the campaign without spending money.

Besides earning more Beta raffles, the community can unlock items in the demo that arent needed but can change the experience. Youll get things like a decorative statue, a bunny hat, two more in-game days, and a golden pomegranate that raises your friendship with animals.

By using the power of your social networks to spread the word of Pacha, the community will earn fires when a milestone is reached. Every 2 fires lit, a reward will be unlocked.

Once a code is unlocked, well post it on the official Root of Pacha Discord and our website for all to use.

We think youll enjoy the content and the community were building around this game.

New Additions to the Demo
Character Customization
Weve made significant strides in the character customizer, including more skin tones, hair colors, hairstyles, and another outfit.

You can now get hats from Jizu and equip them in the you menu tab.
Mini-map Update
The more detailed mini-map will help you find your way. There are icons for the animals and plants youve found. The list of people also now gives you more info on each character, like their in world sprite, if they have an idea, and if you can exchange with them like Jizu, the clothing maker.
Game Intro
The demo will have a shortened version of the game intro that explains why you moved to this new land.
New People to Exchange With
You can now exchange with Grob for meat and other animal products. For now, it can be smoked and dried, but it will be a part of recipes you can cook. In the future, there will be vegetarian substitutes for the recipes that require meat.

You can get a fabulous new hat from Jizu, the clothing maker. In the future, she will have other outfits you can exchange for as well!

Beta Update
Because of the way Steam works, Beta backers wont be able to see the demo since they already own the game. To work around this limitation, well add a Beta Branch for the demo that backers can switch to, allowing them to play the same demo build as everyone else. This is super important if you want to play in co-op.

These same updates will be added to the Beta! So you can enjoy the new map and new character creator.

Devlog 23: Trials

We want to thank all of those who were able to play and test the Beta. The warm reception the game has received is beyond our wildest dreams. Thank you for all your continued support.

We cant wait for you to see all that is being developed and planned for the games release. In the meantime, we are excited to have people try out a demo next month.
Demo
Along with developing the game, weve been working on a demo thatll be in Steam Next Fest (June 13-20th). Most demos are 30 to 60 mins long, but with all the content we have, that wasnt enough time to really get a feel for Roots of Pacha, so we are aiming to have a demo thats about 2 hours long with some tailored features.
Exploration
Exploration is such a big part of the game, so you will be able to discover plants, befriend animals, adventure in the caves, and forage through the forest and the land surrounding the village.
Ideas
Ideas are a major mechanic for progression. In the demo, youll be able to discover the power of time through the sundial and develop the idea of animal taming. One change for the demo is that youll start with the Idea of animal friendship already developed, so youll be able to use the flute to befriend animals. After progressing your friendship with them, youll discover the Idea of animal taming and riding. To allow you to rapidly develop these ideas for the limited demo, youll start with some contribution as well.
Fishing
Along with farming, youll be able to fish in the waters surrounding The Land Between Two Rivers. Youll use your handaxe to track fish and strike when the time is right. We hope you enjoy our unique take on fishing.
Processors
There will be plenty of processors and the ideas that accompany them for the final game. For the demo, youll be able to complete a contribution quest with Tare to earn a smoker and a fishing quest with Frer to earn a dryer. Processing the fish you catch and some of the plants you find will yield better contributions.
Lore and the World
Youll be introduced to Pachas world by befriending your fellow Pachans, watching a shortened intro cutscene, and experiencing your Rite of Passage Festival. The Rite of Passage is an important event in every Pachans life when their totem is revealed. At the festival, youll be able to earn a perk along with learning more about your world.
The Caves
Explore the depths of Pachas caves and overcome the challenges that await you.
Saves
The demo is only a sample size of the game, but another big part of the game is playing at your own pace. To give people the opportunity to try different play styles weve decided to allow you to save, start multiple runs, and play in co-op.
Beta Update
Were working on a Beta that includes improvements for multiplayer, more player customization, an intro to the game, updates to fishing, and improved character schedules.

All Be-ta Shaman Kickstarter backers and above should have received their keys. If you cant find the email you can have the key resent by entering the email you backed the game with here: https://rootsofpacha.com/orders/
Pachan Festival
Pachans love a good party, and so do we. The Beta was a big milestone in development and the demo is another. To celebrate our very own Rite of Passage, we have some cool things planned for the community. So keep an eye out for next months devlog and our social media for the details.

Devlog 22: Pacha calls

Hello Pachans!! This is a mammoth-and-a-half-sized update for the game! Weve added irrigation, expanded caves, romance and dating, a complete overhaul to the ui, new character portraits, and more! (more info on those in devlog #19, #20, #21). In this devlog, we cover a few new ideas, trading, animal updates like racing, and a whole lot more listed at the bottom of the devlog.

We cant wait for Be-ta Backers to play (and send their feedback too!). For those anxiously waiting the game, well have a demo in June we hope youll enjoy.

Theres still a road to be walked, with lots of content to develop, but were more than happy with the state of the game right now. To celebrate, well be doing a live stream with SharkyGames on Tuesday, April 12th at 10 am PDT on YouTube Hope to see you there!
The Ideas of Ideas
"Ideas" are one of the most important aspects of the game. We implemented and tested a few processors in the Alpha that are now "Ideas" in the Beta. For example, you'll help Tare develop a Press that helps the clan juice more things.

Once you explore deep into the caves, you'll find tin that will spark an "Idea" on how to work with this new material. From there, you'll be able to upgrade your sickle and make a tin bucket that holds more water.

Make watering your crops even quicker by developing the Idea of irrigation with Garrek. After he sees you using your new tin watering can, he will have an idea he would like to discuss with you.
Trading
Our Pachan friend, Zelk, returns to the clan along with his partner, Nari, and their daughter Era, who have never met the clan before. Through Zelk, we'll get the "Idea" to trade with others, giving us the ability to get resources that are harder to find.
Social
We need each other to not only survive, but to thrive. In this update, we implemented more of the social side, which was many, many months in the making.
Dialogues
All characters now have a minimum of ten dialogues. The two romanceable characters in Beta Frer and Mana have over 50 and 40 dialogues, respectively. We feel this is a good "first coat of paint" on the social system and something we look forward to expanding upon for release.
Gifts
All characters have a set of loved, liked, disliked, and hated gifts that will affect your friendship with them with unique dialogue associated. You can also get an extra boost to friendship if you give them a gift on their birthday, especially a loved gift.
A Few New Looks
While redesigning the portraits, we gave a few characters a fresh look in the world that better fit their personalities and added to our cast.
New Place To Get Things
Decorate with things that Reese made. Visit her and find what items will help you turn your hut a home.

She will also have some extra fabric that will allow you to expand your belt and carry more items as you travel the land.
Animals

Racing
In the Alpha, we could only race with others in multiplayer. Now, you'll be able to race Mana and Jelrod every Saturday. It also will become part of clan culture and something near and dear to some of the characters. We look forward to telling you more about this as we expand this Idea.
Animal Updates
We had a few animals with color variations in the game, but we thought it was time for guanacos and bison (who are now rideable) to get some new styles. You can also gather fur from boars by shearing them.
Improved Mini-Game
Like fishing before it, we felt it was time to give this game a little more polish. To attune to an animal, you will play the game until you fill all the notes. It may take you one try or a few. Some animals will be harder to tame than others.
The Lore Expands
The story is something we don't want to spoil for those who wish to discover it for themselves, so we'll remain tight-lipped on many parts. So instead, we will tell you the question we hope to answer: what brought us to the Land Between Two Rivers?

Caves have been a spiritual place throughout human history and we aim to honor that legacy with a thoughtful experience and a dash of humor. We hope you'll enjoy the adventure.
Quality of Life
We now have full controller support! This not only offers us a better experience now, but it will help us when we develop for consoles later.

We now have an easier-to-navigate UI. This was a massive undertaking that took a lot of time and attention. You can read more about it in devlog 21.

Well have a Mac OS build in the near future. So our alpha and beta backers who prefer to play on mac should have access soon.
Mark Your Calendars!
After a busy few months, we wanted to hang out with the community again, so well start a new save and stream the game on Tuesday, April 12th at 10 am PDT on YouTube. Plus, well be raffling a few Beta Keys! We hope to see you in chat!

Weve mentioned it a few times in the Discord, but we are excited to announce we will have a demo on Steam in June. We cant wait for people to play! Stay tuned for more info.

Devlog 21: You and I

Hello Pachans! With only one month left of development until the Beta milestone, lots has been done in Roots of Pacha and theres still more to come. In this devlog, well focus on two big changes: the intro to the game and the new UI.
New Beginnings
With Beta backers gaining access to the game in a month, we thought now would be a great time to focus on and test out how players are introduced to the game. We wanted to create something that wasnt overwhelming for new players yet not too intrusive for those familiar with the genre.

In the stone age, ideas were passed on through stories and art. On day one, Igrork will introduce you to the concept of farming and youll receive your first cave-art tutorial on how to farm. If you are familiar with the game or the genre, these pop-ups are easy to close and will be something that people can revisit later in a future update.

After this initial tutorial, other timed events will follow, like introducing other ideas, the opening of the caves, beach, and savanna. Spreading out these events allowed us to tie them more closely to the story of the world without intruding too much on how the player spends their time.

The game will also have its first quests introduced that will reward you once you complete them.

The story of how you arrived to Pacha's lands will be further integrated into the early stages of the game, but the full story will be told at the games launch.
New UI
Great UI helps with accessibility and clarity, so this is something weve given a lot of attention to over the past few months with a complete overhaul. The new look and improved functionality will help us lay the groundwork for future integration with controllers and consoles later.

This new style gave us a chance to spruce up the characters portraits. We loved the previous art, but this new look is far more expressive and a direction were excited to continue.

With the new UI, youll be able to track your friendship status and what gifts they liked (or didnt) and see when their birthdays are.

Thank you for your continued support. Were just making a game about community and the importance of kindness, but we cant help but hope life would imitate art a little more. Stay safe out there. If you can, wed appreciate it if you did one extra kind act like buying coffee for the person behind you in line, donating to a worthy charity, or picking up litter. The little things add up. The world needs it right now.

Devlog 20: A Deeper Meaning

Hello, Pachans! Love is in the air and the clan is feeling it too. In this devlog, well focus on two aspects of the April 8th update: romance and caves.
Depths of the Heart
Although Pachans dont celebrate Valentine's Day, theyve been in a romantic mood lately. In the next update, youll be able to date and form a union with Frer, Mana, and two other characters.

In an earlier update, Frer had 2 world cutscenes added to the game that told a little bit of his story. The upcoming build will have 3 additional personal events.

Whats the difference between world and personal events you say? Glad you asked!
World events are triggered by going to a specific location between certain times and will include all players, if playing in multiplayer. These types of events often carry over into the dialogue and daily routines affecting the world as well.

A personal event is player-initiated through dialogue and includes only that character and the person who initiated it. If playing in multiplayer, everyone else will go about their business as usual. These events are more like dates or hanging out with a friend, in some cases.

Once you gain enough flowers with Mana, Frer, or one of the other dateable characters, youll be able to pursue a relationship with that special someone and give them a kiss for a small boost in your relationship.

Once you reach 10 flowers, you can form a union! A union consists of a short ceremony with a reception following right after. At the reception, youll be able to walk around in your union attire and chat with guests before heading back to the village with your new partner in life.

This will continue to be expanded on beyond what will be in the next interaction of the build. We want your partner to be a meaningful part of your life and continue to have a life of their own as well.
Depths of the Soul
Youll cross into the edges of the spirit world in the forest cave. There, youll meet some totem guides that will help you through its mysterious depths.

Throughout the cave youll find challenges to test your ability to observe the world around you. This iteration of the caves is just the beginning with more totems and puzzles planned for the future.
Depths of Gratitude
February 22nd is the one year mark from when we first launched the Kickstarter. Its been beyond a dream come true. Because of all the backers and the support of the community as a whole, this game will be something even better than what we first imagined.

Over the last month, theres been a resurgence of attention for our little game thanks to one of our artists posting on Reddit and an article on PC Gamer. To all those who have been around since Kickstarter or before, we hope you join us in welcoming the new folks to our community. The fact that so many people are interested in a game centered around discovery and kindness is truly inspiring.

Devlog 19: Fresh Waters

Hello Pachans!

Wed like to wish you all a Happy New Year! Let 2022 bring you plenty of warmth, bright moments, and happy memories. 2021 was an amazing year for us, full of surprises, events, and unwavering support from our community. To our Kickstarter supporters specifically, thank you for believing in us from the start, spreading the word, and giving us a chance to fulfill our dream. We quickly smashed the initial goal and ended up 1,115% funded!

It was a wild ride, hitting stretch goal after stretch goal, with many happy tears shed.

Following the Kickstarter, we were able to achieve another enormous milestone: a playable Alpha. Since then, weve released 6 major Alpha updates, each containing new game mechanics, overhauls, and polish.

Your feedback has helped us improve Roots of Pacha and shape the game to become the best possible experience for players. As we continue to work on the game, please keep it up! Were paying attention to everything you have to say.

At the end of 2021, we spent time scheduling things for next year and evaluating the teams progress. Here are our plans for 2022:
Our next update will be Beta
Those who pledged at the Beta level will get access to the game on April 8, 2022! This will be a huge milestone for us and we cant wait for more players to try out the early version of the game. This date gives us an extra month in our development cycle so that we can polish this juicy update.
New Ideas
As ideas shape our world, they continue to do so in Roots of Pacha. New Ideas like Hammering, Trading, and Irrigation will find their way into the Beta.
Item Placement
Make your decorative mark on the village and place items where youd like. Players will no longer be limited to placing items in the fields.
Dating and Marriage
Eyeing that special someone? We will add 4 datable characters with which you can eventually form a union. Each character will have their own series of cutscenes, so you can get to know them a little better. Their dialogues will be expanded following the Beta, but we can't wait for you to learn more about our first 4 datables.
Polish
Our mini-map reflects the village you create (including your crops), so it felt only natural to have it reflect the season as well.

Weve been working on adding a new layer of polish to the game with new UI and updated character portraits.
And More
Well expand on these and other updates in the future as we continue to do our monthly devlogs. So stay tuned for more.

If you still havent joined our Discord, be sure to do so. We have alpha/beta key giveaways, mini-games, and much more to discover!
Release
After taking a hard look at what we wanted in our 1.0 release, and considering the increased scope that came with Kickstarter, we realized we need more time than our initial projection of Q2 of 2022. Our current plan is to release in late 2022.

This was not a decision we made lightly, as we strived to find the right balance of getting the game into your hands as soon as possible and how much content can be made to create a complete experience.

We take pride in our game, story, and community. Even if we too wished we could release sooner, we feel that given a little extra time, we can offer a more polished and meaningful experience - one that is worthy of you, who make this all possible.

We believe the future of this game is brighter than ever. The community centered around a game about kindness and cooperation has only grown. The team has only gotten stronger, and the dream of two brothers has become so much more.

You Rock.

Join the clan for a New Years festival at the mountain summit. Youll chat with the characters to hear many of their wishes for the upcoming year, listen to a story about how the northern lights came to be, and watch the lights in action.
The Great Connector
Vuak has a vision that theres something you need to see on the other side of the river. Youll have to gather supplies from far outside the land, but once you do, youll be rewarded with the start of a grand challenge that will continue at release.
Player House Upgrades
Youll be working hard and might want a little extra room to stretch your legs (or invite that special someone to come live with you). Once you get enough materials and contribution points youll be able to upgrade your house and your kitchen as well! Having an upgraded kitchen (and the utensils that are being developed to go along with it) will expand the possibilities of the dishes you can make.
Everyday Life
We continuously add layers of detail as we develop the big things in the game. As you explore the world, youll find the characters going about their business, which mostly includes helping the clan like Jag is. He looks after the village by making sure theres always a fire ready to warm your hands or cook with.

As you venture around the world and experience the different seasons, youll hear music and ambient sounds that shape the world. We hope you enjoy all the hard work and love that has gone into creating this experience.

Weve also put another coat of paint on the characters likes and dislikes. This will continue to evolve as we add more things to the game, but each character now has a neutral, dislike, like, hate, and love response for gifts and a couple of items for each.

The interior of characters homes are also being designed to reflect their unique personalities and roles in the clan. Tetih is the oldest member of the clan who enjoys the finer things in stone age life, like decorative rugs and a big cozy bed.
Building for the Future
Its exciting to be working on aspects of the game that dont fit nicely into one sprint or devlog cycle. These are the parts of the game that will weave the world into something greater than the sum of its parts.

Love is an important part of the human experience and our history. Its important to us that its meaningful in Roots of Pacha. So weve been working hard to create a story for each character you can date and the system surrounding how you go about seeing that special someone.

Were also working on stories and cutscenes with other people in the clan as well as the deeper meaning of what Pacha has in store for us. A lot of this work wont be reflected in the alpha as its still being developed.

Until Next Time

Thanks for taking the time to read what weve been up to. We hope you and yours have a happy and safe holiday. You rock!

Devlog 17: Reach For The Stars

Hello Pachans! Were back with another mid-sprint devlog! We say it every time, but we continue to make huge strides in the Roots of Pacha world. Progress has been made with character activities and their homes, the main story, a winter festival, and so much more! We hope you enjoy reading about what weve been up to.
Character Homes & Activities
The clan was getting cold from the last wintery update, so they wanted to get cozy inside. This sprint were working on updated interiors for some of the NPCs. Each home in the clan will reflect its unique inhabitants. Can you guess who calls this house home?

The clan has many chores they need to do throughout the day. Youll find various characters going about their business with their new animations.
A Greater Calling
After completing a quest that takes you to the Jungle, you will find a mysterious pyramid topped with four totems. Through this structure, you will progress through the larger story by completing different quests and learn why you were destined to live in the Land Between Two Rivers.

If youve seen our Kickstarter trailer, you know it ended with a pyramid. This pyramid will be added to the game, although in a different form. We loved the original style of the pyramid, but when we started to work with it in the game, its style felt out of place in the more organic world of Pacha. So we reworked it to fit within the world and the story were telling.
A New Year
The end of winter signals the coming of new life. You will join the clan as they say goodbye to the chill of winter and welcome spring. You will travel to the top of the snow-covered mountain where you will make wishes for the coming year, tell stories, and watch the lights of Quro dance in the sky.
House Upgrades
Youve been working hard gathering and planting, so we felt it was time that youre able to upgrade your home. Expanding your house will allow you to form a union with your special someone and have them move in. Then eventually have children join your hearth.

Those who love cooking will be able to expand their repertoire of dishes with new appliances and utensils that are unlocked at each stage. Then youll be able to make your friends the meals they love.
Love & Marriage
We started adding cutscenes last alpha update, and work has continued on how you can woo that eligible single who catches your eye. We want to make sure that your union feels meaningful to both you and the character.
Switch Progress & Unity 2021
Like Pachans preparing for winter, we know how important it is to prepare for the long term. Lots of progress has been made with optimizations, the save system, joystick support, and cross-platform play with Switch. We also upgraded the project to Unity 2021 early, which has allowed us to take advantage of some of the new features as we optimize and keep our tech debt low.
Epic
Were excited to say that Roots of Pacha will be available on the Epic store as well as Steam when we release next year. Were excited that even more people will be able to play our game.

Thanks for sticking with us through this journey. Your excitement and continued support mean the world to us. If you havent already, we hope you join the community in Discord.

Leave a comment with whose house you think is included in this devlog and why.

Devlog #16: Knifetooth

Hello, clan! Weve just completed another development cycle and big strides have been made in the Pachan culture and the world as a whole. We have a full four seasons, an updated fishing mini-game, a new idea, two new other clans, and big changes in how the characters interact with you and the world.
Winter
Its time to gather around the fire as snowflakes are falling in the Land Between Two Rivers. You will now be able to experience winter and cycle through an entire year! Each season will continue to be improved, but were excited to have reached this milestone!

A few new chill-resistant plants, gatherables, fish, and seasonal music can be found while exploring the land.
Social
Weve started to give the social aspect of Roots of Pacha a lot more development focus. We added summer and raining schedules, dialogues, and animations to breathe a little more life into the characters' daily routines.

On rainy and snowy days the clan will hunker down inside, but their activities won't stop. Youll be able to see Pachans hanging out at the Pacha Hearth or at each other's homes. In this development cycle, we added Gin and Tares home interior and made it accessible within the alpha. Their home has a little extra grandeur to it from their status within the clan, but theyre still welcoming to their fellow Pachans.
Friendship
Like other farming sims, youll be able to talk with and give gifts to NPCs to improve friendship, but true to the culture of the world, dance will also help you connect with characters. But a character wont want to dance with you right away so you will need to raise your friendship to a point where theyre happy to bust a move with you. Youll be able to check your friendship status (represented by flowers) in the Journal and see who youve given gifts, danced with, and spoken to.

Once you gain enough friendship you will be able to see world-changing events for some characters. We feel it's important that your actions, including your friendships, change the lives of the characters around you. They may start going outside the Land or spending time with other characters.

We have many cutscenes in the works but we started with Frers first two. Alpha players will be able to see them at two and four flowers. Since were developing for single and multiplayer, these two cutscenes can be experienced by all players at the same time. After these two cutscenes are experienced, Frers schedule will change slightly to reflect his character development. Were excited to expand on this direction in storytelling.

We gave a few characters a makeover. After our Gamescom Festival, we wanted to give Ibon and Jelrod a look that better reflected the divas that they are.

To create the living breathing world we have a lot more cutscenes, schedules, dialogue, animations, and characters to add. But were pretty happy with the strides weve made these past two months.
Roaming Clans
Weve started working on two other roaming clans, the Mograni and the Yakuans. These groups seem to be the opposite in almost every way. One lives in the cold North while the other makes the Turtle Islands home. No one remembers what started this feud but the clans have little to no kind words to spare for each other. Thankfully for them, Pacha gave our clan a sign to settle between them. Could this be a part of a larger plan?

Three characters from each clan have been added to the alpha with a few dialogues each. Its been exciting to see the early stages of this story take shape and were looking forward to expanding on it.
Fishing
Like Pachans we strive to better our ideas and our fishing mini-game is one of them. After getting player feedback and testing it ourselves we felt it needed an update. We decided to change the way the hover works and more clearly indicate where you needed to keep your cursor within. From there, an indicator will fill up to 4 bars when it's time to strike. We also changed how the fish became aware of you. Once they see you you have a short time to move the cursor away and wait for them to go back to not noticing you before resuming your progress in catching the fish.
A New Idea
Although Pachans are innately inventive, theyre not the only ones with Ideas. Yakuans and Mogranis have their own way of doing things and have been mastering their surroundings for years. Once they trust you enough, theyll share their way of living with you and maybe youll even invent something together.
Discord bot
Starting in October, instead of having alpha raffles based on the top players of our Discord minigame, everyone will be able to earn tickets based on their own achievements.

The clan works together to unlock fires that will translate into the number of alpha raffles we do at the end of the month. We start with 2 fires (raffles) and each additional one is unlocked based on everyones total contribution.

If you havent already, join us now for a chance to win, and hangout with the awesome community. You dont want to miss the new #-wholesome-memes channel!
Whats next
Well work to expand on the social aspect like dating and marriage, add new ideas like irrigation, and continue to weave the threads that tie the world together.

Devlog 15.2: Fall in love with music

Hello Clan! Lots has been going on in Roots of Pacha. Our walkthrough trailer was included in IGN Awesome Indies for Gamescom and we streamed the latest Alpha update with Sharky and decided "The Battle of Playing Instruments! It was so close! The Mammoths fought hard but end the end the Cave Lions leapt to stardom. We raffled 3 alpha access codes, and the winners are JennyBand and Etrigan from Team Cave Lion, and farahmandpour from Team Mammoth! Congrats and thanks for playing!
Fall
Falling leaves and new colors adds another layer of life to our expanding world. Just one more season to go!
Carnival!
Music is one way the Clan connects to Pacha and all her creations. At this festival, Carnival, you can chat with the community, dance, hear a story, and theres even a little friendly competition to see who can perform the best!
Tools & Animals go outside!
We love our animals and they can now hang out outside! They will come out of the shed in the day to enjoy the sun.

Weve also spent time working on new tools and how they will be upgraded in the game.
Pets
Animal companions have brought us joy for over 10,000 years and now we can pet and have them follow us in Roots of Pacha as well!
Beach
As the temperature cools in the Land Between Two Rivers we expanded the Known Lands to include the Beach. Youll find wild coconuts, dates, sea kale, and more!

Were going to focus on winter and deepening the story of the Pachans and the surrounding Clans.

Devlog #14: The power of rocks!

Hello Clan! Summer brought many new plants to our Clan, and our old tools could barely keep up. Acre, Igrork, and Ata have a few Ideas on how to improve things.
Plant Knowledge
It all starts with a seed, a tiny powerhouse that provides for the clan. There are no stores, and traders are too infrequent to get these all-important parts of farming life.

When you return from the wilderness with a seed, it will first grow as it did in its wild form. As you tend to the plant, the Clan will gain Knowledge about its needs. This will change how the plant looks, and it will start bearing a domesticated version of the original wild yield.

The more we sow and harvest a plant, the more Knowledge well accumulate. Once a plant is domesticated, its yield quality will improve as its tended. This quality will affect contribution, refill rates of stamina, and even how much a Clan member will like that item.
Plant Nursery
It has always been our adoptive grandads dream to tend to plants and, although he is too old now to till the soil, he wants to help. Once you reach a specific Knowledge of plants, hell come up with the idea to create a Plant Nursery. There, Igrork can help by tending to the plants and providing a new source to get seeds rather than out in the wild.
Tools
The hands of our Clan have accomplished a lot, but it was their innovation of tools that allowed them to do more.

After you find obsidian for the first time, Acre will have the Idea to build a workstation that will allow her to work with these new-found materials. With the necessary resources, you will be able to improve your tools from flint to obsidian, tin, copper, and even to materials that require smelting.

Ata, the ambitious kid with a Hammer as a sidekick, will have the idea to start smelting metal. With her and her parents' help (shes little after all), the Workstation will be improved to accommodate her wild idea to make metal stronger by mixing it.

These upgrades will allow you to accomplish more with less effort.
Bot
Cooperation is important to us, thats why it plays such a pivotal role in Roots of Pacha. Our intention with the Discord bot is to have something fun that reflects that and brings everyone in the server together.

Starting July, instead of giving the alpha keys to the top 2 contributors, well raffle 2 keys within the Top 15 contributors. But thats not all, were also bringing back the community goals to increase the number of alpha keys raffled. Depending on how much contribution we all make as a Clan, well raffle up to 5 alpha keys per month, the first 3 among the Top 15 and the last 2 among the Top 50.

A 3rd alpha raffle has already been unlocked !!

We just started working on updates to the bot. Well begin with mini-quests for the whole Clan, which will unlock new plants, a hummus item to save for whenever youre hungry and need more stamina, random campfires for you to rest at, increased max stamina for a limited time, and new emojis for the server.
Coming up
Some other things that are in the works for the next update:
A New Season
The leaves are changing, and the air is getting crisper. Fall brings with it lots of exciting visual changes as well as a toe-tapping festival for all to enjoy.
The Beach
Fall is coming to the Land Between Two Rivers, but its still warm by the beach. Well be able to explore the area and find new plants and fish.

The next months edition will be a stream showing off this mammoth-sized alpha update. Stay tuned! You rock!

Devlog #13: Guanaco

Hello Clan! Following our update cycle, today were releasing a new alpha version: 0.3.0 Guanaco.

Thanks to everyone who joined us in the livestream where we showcased many of the new features and content. We added a new area , a new season , expanded the processors , added plants , animals , & more!

[previewyoutube=iZDLPvh2e6c;full][/previewyoutube]

With so much new content we couldnt start at the beginning, so well tell you a bit about a new event, The Rite of Passage.

The Clans success depends on every adult being a contributing member to society. So the passage from adolescence to adulthood is something to be celebrated. As a new adult, you go through this rite on the 7th day, taking an oath and learning about your guardian spirit.
Whats next
Weve got many features and content planned for the next alpha iteration, which releases in early August. Next up were adding the Fall season and beach region. We also plan to give extra attention to animals by starting work on the pets mechanic and making tamed animals go in/out of sheds.

Stay tuned next month for the mid-cycle devlog with more insight on these and more content!

We're playing the Alpha update

It's the end of the month, and that means its (almost) devlog time. But since it's also Alpha time, we're going to do something cool and stream the new content instead of doing a devlog. We thought it'd be a fun way to showcase the main features of this iteration and hang out with you, the community.

Join us next week as we explore the Savanna and take in the Summer sun in the Land Between Two Rivers. But dont worry we wont spoil everything.

The alpha update will be released soon after the stream ends !

Devlog #12: A new season begins

Hi Clan! Its devlog time, and were starting to feel the summer vibes. Heres what weve been up to .
Surveys and rewards
All surveys have been sent to backers, and were at over 90% completion. If you still havent gotten the invite to PledgeBox or have any questions about your survey, please email us at support@rootsofpacha.com or message @creb or @berkza on Discord.

Were organizing the production and distribution of physical and digital rewards. Theyll be sent in batches closer to release, and well update their status in the devlogs.
New team members
We also wanted to tell you that weve got two new animals joining our development team! Squid will be helping us on the coding side and Kangaroo with the scriptwriting.
Alpha
On April 8th, the alpha went out to Al-fire backers and above, and were very happy with their comments so far. Thank you so much for the feedback, bug reports, and streams. Weve categorized and prioritized all of it to fit it in our development cycle.

The pre-order store is now closed, but well continue to give alpha keys to the winners of our Discord community minigame. Some members of the community are also doing their own giveaways with extra keys theyve purchased.
The timeline
In our previous devlog, we mentioned we would split the remaining work to match the dates of the alpha updates.

Every month, well share the status of our general project overview, as well as what we plan for the upcoming alpha update.

Our current broad strategy is to include a new season and region in each alpha iteration until we complete the in-game year and the whole map. At that point, the game will have a complete cycle, and the alpha will no longer end at a specific in-game date. Along with it, well work on features and mechanics, new content, fix bugs, and make quality of life improvements.
The next alpha iteration
Kickstarter orders took a while to process, but we believe were still on track to deliver the next iteration in early June. This is a preview of what were working on:
Summer
Days are getting longer in real life (in the northern hemisphere at least), so it was fitting that we worked on the next season of the game. This will allow alpha players to kick back and relax in the summer heat with new plants, animals, dialogues, and even a new event!

Seasons affect almost everything in the game. For summer, were adjusting some systems and developing new ones. The good news is that all efforts made for this new season will make fall and winter easier to implement.
Savanna
The other main feature were working on adding is the savanna which lies northwest of The Land Between Two Rivers. Its a place of tall grasses, canyons, and shallow waters.

This geography is very special to the Clan. A long time ago, in a place similar to this, they learned to stand upright to walk on their two feet, and overlook the tall grass.
New Fauna & Flora
To accompany both the new season and the map expansion, were improving and adding new animations for some animals.

In the current alpha, the only animal that produced something was the female ostrich (guess what she drops... thats right, an ostrich egg!). Now, youll obtain something from each of the current tameable animals. For some, youll need a new tool like a milk container to milk your ibexes.

Weve redone the trees to match the style of the other assets better. We aimed for a more natural look. Were also working on new plants that will spawn in the summer, like tall grasses and bushes.
New Event: Rites of passage
The Clan celebrates rites when theres an important event in the life of one of its members. One of those events is the passage to adulthood.

Soon after the Clan settles in their promised land, the shaman decides its time for a Rite of Passage. And this one is very special, as its your time to make an offering and take the oath of caring for your Clan.

What would you offer your Clan, and how would you like to help?

Next devlog, well show you the progress made on these features, along with other things planned for the next alpha update:

Split items in the inventory
Multiple animal sheds
Name animals
Some new processors and items
Music for each area in spring and summer
More character dialogues

Thank you for reading! If youve got any questions or just want to be part of a great community, we invite you to join our Discord!

It will only be open for the month of April and then we will need to end the party, have a bunch of mates (the drink), and get back to work.

Well be choosing the 2 main prize winners in the next few days. Youve made this really hard for us, your creativity, descriptions, and yumminess were exceptional!
What weve been up to
While planning and running the Kickstarter campaign, we continued to build on the game even after letting streamers play.

During this past month weve added:
Style & new decorations
We added tall grasses that spawn in batches, 3 flooring types (dirt, wood, stone), worked on item alignment, and updated plant shadings. This is how the game looks now:
Food
Weve added the initial cooking mechanics with a few recipes you can make and their animations!

To expand on the importance of food preservation, weve added fish drying and fermenting to the existing processors.
Multi contribution & Storage
A much-requested feature by the content creators who played the pre-alpha, and something that was on our backlog, was the ability to contribute multiple items at once. You can now open a contribution menu to easily contribute after a good day of foraging and harvesting. You can even recover whats been contributed for the day if you accidentally dropped it in.
Feedback
Weve implemented an easy way to report bugs and feedback inside the game. Just pressing F1 will bring up a feedback menu. Alongside your description, well receive a screenshot and state of the game to try to reproduce the issue.
Cross-platform tests
We received our Switch Dev kits last month and were able to play cross-platform! There are still many integrations, optimizations, and improved controller support to do. Still, its great that we develop for it early on!

If you want to read more about it, we made a post about it
Load menu
Weve always had a save system, but loading was a bit tricky and not 100% functional. Weve now implemented a basic but proper menu and also integrated it with Steam for identifying users in multiplayer.
Whats next
This month well split our time between coordination and development.
Coordination
• Well be processing Kickstarter pledges and pre-order stores. Were developing a simple tool to automate the process of assigning Discord roles and providing alpha backers with keys.
 • Open up Discord channels for alphas.
 • Were working on an updated timeline that includes stretch-goals and assets from Kickstarter design tiers.
 • Were growing our team. Its a gradual process as we want to have the right size to keep our current synergy.
Development
Our main priority this month is to deliver the updated alpha to backers and winners of contests, receive and categorize feedback and bugs.

We have a few things already going on, which were scheduled to finish this month:

 • Sketch and try the dimensions of the updated map with new locations (Tundra and Turtle Islands).
 • Seasons assets for The Land Between Two Rivers and Forest area.
 • Work on the back story of the game, the Yakuans, and other roaming tribes.

Well also start working on the features defined in this months planning sessions.

Thank you once again for all your support!

Devlog #10: Traveling to Festival

Kickstarter Festival
Hello Clan! Wed like to invite you to our Festival to celebrate all our achievements and honor the journey we still have yet to travel.

The Festival and Reveals

From today to the 23rd, our whole Pacha Clan will be traveling to the festival location. Along the way well be showcasing some of the members of our Clan, including 4 who are romance-able. Each one will bring one of their favorite items to offer Pacha, mother nature (for those keeping track, add this to your notes under Items loved by the NPC).

During the journey, Voda, the tracker, foresees encounters with new friendly animals. What could this guy be? Can it be mounted? Does it have fur or lay eggs?

Stay tuned on Twitter, Discord and Instagram for the reveals!

Kickstarter Festival Challenge

Today, were also launching the Kickstarter Festival Challenge, a way to earn in-game rewards before and during the Kickstarter Campaign. Even though wed love to have your support on Kickstarter, we want to reward you too for spreading the word of Pacha in your social networks . Thats why these unlocked rewards will be for everyone .
How to play?
Use the power of your social networks to spread the word of Pacha. When a milestone is reached a fire will light up . Rewards will unlock after a certain amount of fires are lit.

Before the Kickstarter campaign, the ways to light fires and unlock rewards are:

On the 23rd, well reveal even more ways to light fires so you have more chances to earn rewards later on too.

You can check the status of the Challenge on our website and on Discord too!

Discord bot
One of the challenges that are unlocked today is a fresh-out-of-the-oven Discord bot. We wanted to give you a way to work towards a common goal in the Discord. Join us in our Clans virtual village to !plant, !water, !harvest, and !explore. The more we do, the more Contribution our Clan earns.

During and after the Kickstarter campaign, well keep working on the bot adding more commands to grow our village.

Well be giving out alpha access to the top 2 Clan members that participate the most in February and in March! Details on Discord, join us & play!

Sneak peak
One of the traditions of this festival is telling the story of the Clan, how we got here, all we have achieved, and even a hint of the road thats still to be walked. Maeri, one of the elders, will tell the story (somehow she managed to do a trailer so you can get a better picture).

Heres a sneak peak of what youll watch on the 23rd.

Oh no! Our world is changing! What are we to do now that the lands we used to roam are no longer the same?

The lights in the sky are our ancestors campfires and we can see them reflected on this rock at night. They must be trying to tell us something.

This is an idea weve got from the start of the project and also something that has come up as a suggestion on Discord. The ability to customize your own pottery and tapestry! Want your face on the wall? How about your cat on that pot?

And with that we wrap up this edition! Thanks again for reading and for all your support. Help us reach more people, earn rewards, and get ready to celebrate the Kickstarter Festival on the 23rd!

Devlog #9: A Fertile Land

Hello Pachans, weve reached the end of the year. December has been a month of game design and goals review. This devlog is not going to be our standard feature-based entry but a review of what weve achieved and whats to come.

First of all we want to thank you for your continued support. So heres a candle for each and everyone one of you who makes this Clan, our Clan.

Its never easy to begin any kind of project. Luckily, as brothers, we always had each others back. As kids we loved playing games together and even when life led us apart, playing a game was always a way to reconnect. We were working as devs and artists, we werent unhappy but there was a creative itch, something we realized we had to do, and thats how we embarked on this journey of making a game.

Us, somewhere, a while ago (I wasn't trying to push him into the water, I promise)

Every piece of the puzzle started to fall in the right place. The farming & life genre, the stone age theme, an amazing artist whos excited about the project, a local publisher that gives us enough support without imposing their view on the game.

All those pieces were great, but we were lacking one essential thing, and it was you, those who wanted to be with us from the start. We presented the idea of Roots of Pacha to all of you back in May and got really excited to find a community with whom to share our dream. The game has changed a lot ever since. The art and the gameplay started to take a unique shape.

Making a game involves a lot of planning, trying out the idea and then deciding if it fits the game or not. Sometimes you need to scrap it all and start from scratch, and that changed our schedule and plans. We realized along the way that we needed more help to be able to iterate faster and include things that we wanted to have in the game, so we expanded our team.

We started working with wonderful people part-time and were able to do more concept art and game assets, add music and SFX, and improve the UI. The game has now reached a mature state where a lot of the mechanics are done, and adding and changing things is a much smoother process.

Thanks momomo, sizu, darkaos!

The best moments of the year were when you shared the excitement for something wed done, suggested a feature, created beautiful fanart, or simply followed our journey. It honestly renews our energy and helps to make Roots of Pacha even more special.

The game is at a state where we are almost ready to begin alpha testing. Were making a minigame for our Discord channel for us to have fun together and as a way to gain access to the alpha. Will you go out and explore? How about planting wheat, or brushing our newly tamed bison? What idea will we develop together?.

Theres still a lot of work to do but the goal is much clearer, and we feel its the right time for the team to grow in size once again. Because of this, we feel a Kickstarter campaign would be a great way to do it.

Roots of Pacha is a game about the community, about how we, humans, worked together to progress and achieve things that were thought to be impossible. Kickstarter not only will help us grow the team, it reflects how all of us can take Roots of Pacha and make it even greater than we originally thought it could be.

Were really excited and a bit nervous about this new challenge. For now you can help us by following the Kickstarter page and spreading the word. Details will come in the following weeks.

Thanks for reading and Happy New Year !

Devlog #8: 100% Whole Wheat

Connect
We did our first livestream with Crytivo Connect showcasing the gameplay for the first time and explaining some of our core mechanics. Thanks everyone for joining and sharing your thoughts. If you havent watched it yet, its now on Youtube

[previewyoutube=5M-Lv4bmSDY;full][/previewyoutube]

Racing tournament
We felt we were missing some action, and we always wanted to include a sport or tournament inside the game to break the routine of planting and evolving. After some research we found that horse racing is one of the ancient sports and we immediately thought about how many rideable animals we have in Roots of Pacha.

We really had a lot of fun racing our animals. Theres still some work to do, and some of our ideas include giving stats to mounts, improving mounts with friendship and special items, choosing a team and becoming the star rider of a season.

Pacha Hearth
Pachans are very social and so they have a common building where they spend rainy days, gather for a warm meal and receive visitors. Vuak, the sha-man and spiritual leader of the clan, is the one in charge of welcoming people to this place. Heres a preview of his room which is inside the building.

Forest minimap
As we continue to develop the world of Roots of Pacha, we add minimap sections of it. This is how the forest minimap looks like.

Were also exploring if the minimap is something you already have, or if you have to complete it as you discover new areas.

Food producers and preservation
A few devlogs ago we talked about how important food preservation was in the stone age. The idea was not only to improve the shelf time of food but also its nutrition.

For example, in the process of making bread, the natural yeast that is present in the grains not only make flour rise and produce a spongy bread, but they also make the nutrients of the grain available for the human body to absorb.

At that point in time, most processes were manual and we felt it was a good idea to represent that in the game. This is the case of the Mortar and Pestle thats used to grind grains into flours and also to mix, and whisk.

Once youve got flour, mix in a little bit of water and let the dough ferment for a few hours. The Fermenter is a processor in Roots of Pacha that lets the natural yeasts in grain, flours and fruits turn into other products.

As a side note, yes, we read your comments, and yes there will be booze making in Roots of Pacha. For better or for worse, alcohol is ingrained in human history.

Finally, after getting fermented dough, you shape it and throw it in the Oven to get that nice loaf.

Another producer that we didnt get a chance to show in the stream is the Solar Dryer. Its made out of a couple of poles with nets in between that use the power of the sun to dry fruits and vegetables. The Solar Dryer accepts multiple items at once.

Taming minigame

After discovering the flute that lets you communicate with animals, you need to attune to them to increase friendship. Flute playing was too immediate and not very rewarding, so we are trying this minigame where friendship will increase depending on how you play the melody.

Fishing minigame
Fishing the shallow waters was a bit simple too, and we had a minigame we didnt like where you had to hit keys in a certain order.

In the new one we developed this month, you have to remain calm and focus on one specific fish. Keep following it as it moves across the water nearby, but dont do it too fast, the ripples will make it go away. Once youre confident enough and you can see it, take a chance to fish it!.

That's it for this edition, thanks for reading. We hope to read your comments on Discord and see you next time!

Devlog #7: Ancestors

Join us on

Ohh look, that ones special

At first glance, all animals of a herd might look the same, but after closer inspection youll start to recognize different colors and patterns. Some special ones might appear on certain seasons or after an event happens.

Develop a bond with the one you like the most and it might want to live with you and let you ride it.

Cave paintings
Our ancestors used caves not only for shelter but to leave an impression of the way they lived, perhaps as a way to transcend, to communicate, or simply admiration for the surrounding nature.

The Clan uses cave walls too, to express their Ideas. As part of discovering the world, youll get to see their parietal art.

Riding

Nokk: What is this riding and animal?.
Okka: Make an animal like you, get on its back, and go places.
Okka: Look, this is what I mean.

Nokk: Ohhh, I see. That might work.
Nokk: Why is a heart floating around though?

Map

Grob: So youre saying that the red thing on the wall is my house.
Voda: Yes.
Grob: But I see my house. Its right there.
Voda: Thats right, but this is your house too. See, its to the left of the main fire.

[Grob tries to enter to painted house in the wall and bangs his head]

Grob: I told you it wasnt my house!
Voda: ...

Eagle Eyes
Some Pachans actually do get the idea of a map. This is how it actually ends up looking after some research has been done.

- Never miss that Pachan you were looking for. Find hints for quests and important stuff they might have to tell you.
- Get an overview of your farm, or that new piece of land that you need to clear. Take a screenshot of your village and share it with your friends.
- See whats being built and where.

2D is for Draw and Draw it again
If youve been following our feed you might have noticed a gradual change of style. As we play the game, we keep making changes to the style so that it can flow with the overall feeling. This month it was the time to refine the backgrounds. We felt it was a bit too cluttered and confusing and wanted to have more space in between things.

Day of the Ancestors
Some say Halloween is a pagan festival. Well, we say its a pachan festival

Even though there are no candies nor doors that can be knocked, Pachans remember their ancestors that day.

It is a time to give thanks for the fall harvest (pumpkins, yay!), ask for the upcoming winter to be mild, and to be grateful to those that came before us and made possible that were here.

Fires & torches
We had a lot of different fires and wanted to change the style and behavior of them. Heres a look of the central plaza at night, with a renewed central fire, new torches and lighting system.

Would you like to dance with me?
Who doesnt like gifts? Isnt that the way we all develop friendships and eventually love? Dont get us wrong, we love that mechanic, but were also exploring some other ways you might deepen your relationships with the Clan.

Now that we have the dance emote, we thought that dancing with other Pachans, when they feel like it, would be a good way to do it.

Crytivo Connect

November 13th we will be spreading the word of Pacha live on twitch.

Well be streaming Roots of Pacha, showcasing the gameplay for the first time ever! Join us to get to know us, watch us play, and for a surprise weve worked on this month.

Mark your calendars for Nov 13th and stay tuned for details on the time.

Will Pacha be able to make this our lucky day and impress you?

Devlog #6: The Clan
Life at the Land Between Two Rivers
What did our ancestors do on an everyday basis? A lot of their time was probably spent gathering provisions in the warm seasons to be able to outlast the cold ones, making pottery and weaving baskets to hold their belongings, curing meats and fermenting grains. They also built basic structures and made the tools needed for survival. As social animals, they chatted, told stories, played music and danced.

In Roots of Pacha, each NPC excels at something, like Croll being the best at building. But all of them contribute to the everyday activities of the clan. You might find Gin, the Clans leader, training for a hunting expedition, or Jizu gathering plants in the forest for Ada, the healer, to use.
Lucky for you thats what I like
Oh the things we cherish and the ones we hate. We improved the gift system so that NPCs will show a different portrait depending on what you give them. And because one man's trash is another man's treasure, youll have to discover what they like and what they dont.
Buildings
Building takes time and sometimes a village. Thats why when the Clan decides to build something, the schedule of some NPCs change while in construction. How about some paint for that Sundial?
Mini map
To make the world more immersive, were trying an approach where every quest, idea or cutscene is initiated by an NPC or by a location. Spreading out the events feels more realistic, but sometimes its too hard to find an NPC youre looking for, or you just want to know where your friends are.

Were developing a minimap per region with indications of the whereabouts of the Clan and key points of interest.

Wondering how on earth could someone know the locations of everyone?. Youll have to develop an idea with Voda, the tracker, to use the eagles' help.
Food preservation
Without proper refrigeration, the Clan needs ways to improve food nutrition and make preserves that can last longer. Some things need a few steps to be made but the ending result is always so satisfying and is a much valuable contribution to the Clan.

Now, if we could only make some butter to go with it...
The power of fire
Weve made improvements to the lights engine. Our goal is to add depth to some objects in the world. When you are walking through the forest, lights will illuminate the trees on top of you but not the bottom ones.

In the darkness of the night and the deepness of the caves, you need to carry a torch to see further around you.
New plants
It all starts and ends with plants, right? If youre in our Discord, you may have noticed our fascination for the natural world (if youre not, join us).

Weve changed the look of the plants when theyre in the wild, theyre usually smaller and not very nutritious. As you plant them and keep growing them, theyll evolve into their improved versions with larger roots, fruits and seeds, brighter colors and nice scents (were working on how to propagate smell through the speakers, so far nothing).

We also thought plants looked a bit too far apart, and now they have a better sense of depth.
Baaaaaa
So we have a mountain, and what animal likes mountains? Yep, goats. We researched the oldest domesticated goats and one of them is the Ibex. Without further ado:
Under the water
As we develop more locations, were adding fishing spots. Some of the new fish youll encounter at different times of days and throughout the seasons:
In-game emotes
All that hard work is fine, but we needed a way to celebrate your first successful harvest with your friends.

Dance is so ingrained in human history, it even appears in cave art. Its used to perform ritual and religious ceremonies, as a way to connect with each other socially, and to entertain. Dance is important in Roots of Pacha too, and might even help you strengthen friendship with the Clan.
SFX
As we polish the world, we continue to add more sound effects. Have you ever heard an Ostrich?
Ostrich - SFX
Discord
Weve added more emojis with NPCs expressions, an animated gif icon and a couple of new channels where we revere mother nature and prehistoric science.

Join us!

Devlog #5: Depths of Pacha

Caves

Pacha, our mother earth, can be felt in every part of the world. She has blessed us with cracks in the mountains, entrances to deep caves that get us closer to her. Mysteries, older than our Clans oldest ancestor, await in their depths.

This past month we worked on the first cave that youll have access to. Caves are places where you can obtain resources, but also where youll connect with Pacha, and discover more about the spiritual world.

The wise Owl, a son of Pacha, welcomes you upon entering. Its powers feel strong here, almost as if we could use them too.

If you are brave enough, youll venture deeper. What are those strange artifacts? It looks like they have a purpose, a way to arrange them maybe...

Inside the cave, youll reach special rooms. Theyre filled with resources buried long ago when the earth formed, or with stories from other humans that explored the caves before you.

Tools

Once again, it will be up to you to discover the tools you want to use. Once discovered, youll gather the materials and develop more ideas on how to use them.

These are some of the resources youll need to upgrade the tools.

We wanted to talk about one of the starting tools, the handaxe. You might have seen it in some of our previous posts or tweets.

It appears to be just a rock, but its not any rock. It has years of perfecting the art of chipping flakes to make it a pointed tool, without breaking it in the process. The other end should be blunt and relatively thick so we can hold it firmly.

Although its not very strong, it lets you do a wide variety of tasks. From breaking small twigs and preparing soil, to fishing in shallow waters and extracting materials from soft ores.

Decorate!

Once you get your home, its time to make it yours! How about a stone table here, with a rug underneath?. You can even get some help from your friends!

Be yourself
Living in the stone age doesnt mean you need to be all ragged and dirty (unless thats what you like). Customize your character by choosing a preferred body type, skin tone, eye color, hair color and style, clothes and shoes.

This month weve added some new clothes and colors, and will continue to do so. We also plan to add accessories!

Library
Theres nothing in the Clan more precious than knowledge. Its what drives the Clan forward by discovering and inventing stuff.

One of the buildings you can build is the library. This is where Garrek spends most of his time. Hes always talking about weird things, like why things fall to the floor instead of going up. He also likes mixing materials and experimenting with ropes and rocks.

By bringing Garrek things that you collect in the wild, new plants and their produce, and anything else that exists in the world, the Clans knowledge will increase. In the library, you can display any items you want and preserve them in amber stone for posterity.

Sundial
Another building we developed this month is the sundial. It might seem a bit advanced for the time, but in some way or another, using the suns shadows was probably one of the first ways we had to track time.

Also, did you know the thing that the thing that projects the shadow is called the gnomon. That alone made it a must have in Roots of Pacha.

When you build it, time in the world will be more accurate so you dont miss that NPC you were hoping to give a flower to.

Drop

A way to share resources, or just to clear your bag after collecting sooo many rocks. Drop it to the floor, so someone else can pick it up. If you leave it overnight, wild animals take them away so make sure to collect anything you need.

Discord Emojis!
This has been something weve wanted to do for a while. Join us on discord to perform a ritual , harness the power of fire , get surprised and profess your wildest love .

Thanks for reading again, hope to read your comments!

Devlog #4: I've got an Idea

Hello Pachans, in this 4th edition you'll learn more about your home, resources, trees, the importance of "ideas," and the mysterious caves that dot the landscape of Pacha.

Join us on Discord!

Your house

When you reach The Land Between Two Rivers, you and your friends will first live with your adoptive parents, the elders Igrork and Maeri. But youre a grown up now, and probably want to get your own place. With a few materials and the help of Croll, the builder, youll build your home wherever you want.

You wont need a lot of space in the beginning but will probably want to expand it later on!

Ideas
We started talking a little bit about ideas last month. Theyre a core part of the evolution of the Clan. Our ability to imagine things, to try our ideas and push ourselves to new things that might seem impossible, is what sets us apart from the other Pacha creatures.

All Clan members have ideas that theyll share with you at some point in time, when improving their friendship and trust, discovering new regions, or finding elements. An idea is not more than an image in someone's mind, theyll tell you a little bit about it and show you a rough sketch of what theyre thinking. Itll be your choice to use the Clans Knowledge to develop ideas in any order you want.

Trees
They dont move but are always there, growing and reaching to the sky. Trees are usually taken for granted when they give us so much: shadow to rest, wood to make tools and build, bark to heal our wounds, fruits for food and medicine.

Weve added 3 trees that grow natively in The Land Between 2 Rivers:

Craftables
We worked on the placing system for the craftables in your farm. There are now wood fences and gates that can open/close automatically when youre nearby.

We also added a new small water well so you dont have to go to the river everytime you need water for your crops.

Most craftables will have to be unlocked through an idea too, so youll have to decide which ideas you want to develop first!

Contribution
Your contribution will mainly be the crops that you grow, the food that you make from them, and anything you can find throughout the world.

This large vessel holds the daily contribution. It seems bottomless, but someone from the Clan distributes its content every night.

Gathering
Throughout the world youll find different items that will help the Clan survive and progress.

Maybe a mushroom for rituals, some datura flowers with strong healing powers, poop for the hunters to camouflage their scent, or oregano to make your favorite dishes (prehistoric pasta sauce?).

Social

We improved the dialogue UI, with a new layout, answers and style. As you talk with the Clan members, give them gifts and help them in their everyday tasks, youll develop friendship.

And whats a friendship if not a plant that needs to be nurtured and cared for. Thats why we represent it as one. Start from seed and watch it convert into a beautiful flower.

Shed

Following up with previous months animal love, weve started trying out the first shed you can invent, build and place in your farms.

Caves

You are walking next to a rock cliff, and suddenly see this entrance partly hidden with vegetation. An entrance to the inner depths of the world, where Pachas manifestations take real shape.

Caves are places where you can find resources and encounter magical beings. To venture deeper therell be challenges, but rewards will be worth them. In following devlogs well be revealing more about them.

Good for you if you made it this far, its been a pretty intense month with lots of stuff taking shape. See you next time!

Devlog #3: Ride the Ostrich

June brought us summer (or winter if youre in the southern hemisphere), and with that came along new animals and their taming mechanic, improvements to the regions, and new ideas and buildings that can be discovered and built.

Animals
In Roots of Pacha, animals arent just simply bought. Being part of nature and children of Pacha, they live freely in herds and packs.

Among the different regions, herds of several species of animals will appear in their natural habitat looking for food and shelter. Some of them wont stay for long and will migrate during colder seasons to look for warmer spots, or during their mating season.

Herds are families, theres at least one mom and one dad, and then there are the babies. Theyll all age and new generations will take their places.

In the wilderness when trying to approach them, they get bothered by your presence. Its their instinct to be scared of strangers. With the help of your clan, youll learn how to care for them and theyll even take food from your hand. Just remember they might not like everything you want to give them.

After gaining their trust, you might want to build a place for them to live with the Clan. By continuing caring for them, and discovering some tools, theyll start rewarding you with valuable products. Others will let you ride them and take you places further and faster than you could have ever imagined.

Going somewhere and wanting to take along a friend?. Some of the animals will be so happy with the Clan that theyll take as many as they can fit.

Our work with animals is not done yet. Some of our ideas for next round are: different colors for animals of the same species that will change from season to season, and breeding when a male and female of the same species live with the Clan.

Ideas & Buildings

Living in the stone age means a lot of what we take for granted today wasnt invented. Part of your task, if you choose to, is to talk and discuss ideas with the people of your Clan.

By domesticating plants and improving their quality, taming new animals and getting to know them, and simply by exploring the world, the Clan will gain knowledge. Itll be your choice to spend the knowledge however you want to develop an idea.

New ideas will start popping up here and there, when you mine a new type of rock, discover an unknown plant, or spot a different kind of animal. Some ideas come from people not in your clan but will only be revealed when you get to know them.

As part of evolving the Clan, youll gather materials and construct buildings. What you build and where you place the building, will affect the schedule of the Clan members.

Spring OST
This past month we added more sound effects to player actions, footsteps that change according to terrain, and music loops for different seasons. This is a preview of one of the spring loops.

Spring - The land between two rivers

On July, we'll be working on revamping parts of the UI, the objects placement system, animals sheds, decoration, player customization and balance.

That's it for now, thanks for reading and let us know how we're doing and what you'd like to see next.

Devlog #2: Promised Land

In this edition dear Pachan, wed like to introduce you to the start of the game and some of its mechanics.
The story of humanity
The creation of our world starts with Pacha, our goddess, mother of everything.

She lived peacefully, neither in light nor in darkness, for she is both. One day, she decided to start filling the canvas of the universe. She exhaled and from her breath came the dust that formed the stars and our world. She wept, and her tears filled the rivers and the oceans. She raised her hands and with that trees and plants reached for the sky. From her womb came all the animals that now roam the earth. Even after being exhausted from all the effort, she pushed once again and we, humans, emerged.

For generations and generations, we honored and lived by her. We split in small groups, staying in places just enough to fulfill our needs before moving somewhere else. Our life didnt change much, we were used to that way of living. Although we had periods of hardships, we felt comfortable.

But Pacha had a purpose for us, a prophecy as old as this story.
Start of the journey
One of the things weve worked on this month has been the introduction to the game. Here youll learn about the prophecy and the purpose Pacha has for us. After a shaking event, a search party goes out to find a new land where we are to live our new life.
Plant Discovery
With no labs or microscopes, our only way as humans to find out if we could eat something was to try it. What does it taste like? Does it feel weird in my tongue? Is it similar to something else I know? Is my mom yelling at me: Dont put that in your mouth! Its poisonous!!?. Hints, trial and error, and instinct were the only tools we had.

In Roots of Pacha, to find a new plant that can be domesticated and later grown by the Clan you first have to explore the world and try to find a wild version of it. If you try the fruit and its good, you can keep its seeds and try growing them.
Water from the skies
Rain is a blessing from Pacha, and the Clan spends a lot of time making rituals to call for it. It deserved that we put some love into how it looks in the world. So we decided to implement ripples in the water when its raining.

Help us spread the love for farming and our own history (or a version of it)!

Some of the things well be working on in June are animal taming and polishing the ideas system. So stay tuned and stay safe!

Devlog #1: The beginning

April has been quite a month for Roots of Pacha. First, we wanted to thank everyone who watched the teaser, joined our discord or wishlisted us on Steam.

If you still havent done any of it, please do and let us know your thoughts! Discord Youtube

Weve been working in Roots of Pacha for many months now in tasks ranging from art style and story, to multiplayer networking, inventory and farming systems.

Lets talk a little bit about plants. Those green living things we all love (well, we know some of you probably dont eat them everyday but we still owe them a lot!). Isnt it amazing that at some point in time, just by trial and error, or even by accident, someone stumbled upon the ancient version of a tomato?; And from there, to marinara, to ketchup, its just history. To show some love to that red ball of yumminess, here are the stages of the tomato plant:

Some of you might know by now that Soda Den is led by a pair of brothers, and it has always been our goal to evoke the feeling of playing together in the games we develop. Thats why Roots of Pacha is a co-op first game, and multiplayer will be supported from day one. Dont worry, if youre playing solo you wont miss out on any content, and we have some ideas on how to connect single players too.

Theres now a road in front of us that we are happy to share with you all. This month were going to focus on fine tuning some of the systems like day/night cycle and seasons, working on new stuff like intro and tutorials, and expanding regions around the village.

Heres a sneak peak of the jungle through an eagles eye. Sorry for the blur, were working on our seer power.

We also have a few ideas for how were going to show this devlogs and answer some of your questions in the future. So stay tuned for next month!
