Shutting down for a while.

Greetings, unfortunately, Element Quest will have to be taken down and off the Steam Store. There are multiple reasons why this is happening:
1) The game had received tremendous negative feedback from users. We initially thought players would see beyond the game's early-state flaws and believe in its potential and future but alas players see it and treat it like a full complete and paid-for product. We tried to target the widest audience, neglecting some of the game's initial quality by doing so. By providing google-translate localization to other languages, we thought non-English speakers would have the opportunity to try out and understand a game that is, in any case, short on sentences. We did plan to eventually cover the basic translation with human-made translation, at least for the countries that play EQ the most. We have implemented controller support but never advertised to have it, for some reason players with controllers didn't like that? Lack of players, due to not knowing well enough where MMO releases are advertised or how to price deals for YouTubers, etc... Or by not syncing the press with the release. Some negative reviews were just "Bad Game" / "Not Fun" / "Doesn't Feel Good" and other unhelpful "jargon". In any case, rightful or not, this is what it is. 2) Development Team Issues The team has been demotivated by the fact that the game has been taken so negatively, while trying to fix the situation, we didn't manage to score enough victories and keep the ship afloat. So negative feedback kept piling and a core developer had decided to leave. 3) No return on investment We have spent a year developing this game, paid many freelancers for art, voice acting, and other services. Alongside some promotional push which costs money as well and research experiments. The game was never close to return-on-investment, we decided to never make it a pay-to-win, we do still stick to that decision, but that may have been one of the things that made the user-acquisition plan difficult. In conclusion, we were heavily inspired by old-school MS, and had a dream, to recreate and succeed upon that old experience, bring new, modern and innovative mechanics to a side-scroller online world. Hopefully, the game will return back to service in the near future. With a better gameplay experience, a smaller target audience, no localization, maybe under a different name. It will still be supported and available on Google Play for some time. Don't lose heart, I don't plan to let it go, just learn from the mistakes and make it better. Update 0.45(2) - Smoothness & Mobile


Changes:


  • New Map / Inventory / Abilities icons will be always visible next to the ability bar for quick access.
  • Smoother character movement / camera movement (No more jittering)
  • Parallax Background should now move much slower and in a more realistic way.
  • Mobile Integration! - The game should be available - free to play - on Google Play (Android) soon, that would probably mean more players since there will be cross-platform gameplay until we reach a higher concurrent benchmark.

Dev Blog 3

Greetings! Too much time had passed since the last Dev Blog was posted, and many things have changed since. We hadn't released any content this week since we had figured more content would not be helpful, at least at the moment, in order to fix the game's most critical issue, which is, lack of online players! So what ARE the potential problems we have found and have to solve? 1) Easy-Anti-Cheat seems to lock away every player which has non-English characters in its OS's user name. (And players in other sporadic cases) After a while they have found out about this problem, hopefully, fixed it, and will release it in their next SDK version, until that is prepared, some players will, unfortunately, remain outside. 2) Lack of publicity due to the fact that we still hadn't reached a worthwhile deal with a worthwhile influencer, our PR freelancers still hadn't released our press release and many of our experiments failed in one way or another. This is not bad tho', we have learned more about what's good for the game and what's bad, what's worth pursuing and what's not. We would still look for worthwhile influencers and try different promotions. 3) The Vicious Cycle of active players: Two tips I'll certainly give to anyone releasing an MMO. First, do what you can to make sure your early version is good in terms of retention so when players come by they will stick for at least an hour. Second, make sure your press release BEFORE the game releases is big enough so there will be a single strike of players that will keep the engine running, what do I mean by that? New players come every day, from steam, if not from anywhere else, since this is a non-mixed F2P game. These players don't see a lot of players running about, what do they do? after a while, they give up, contributing to the problem. So slow and steady growth maybe works for other games but not for this one. Our solution to this problem is quite peculiar, it is to release the game on Android. And yes, before you get angry about it, please understand that promoting a product on the mobile market is much more straightforward. We need more online players, and some return on investment, and if there is a viable and effective solution, we would pursue it. Not because we are greedy, but because we would try to pursue every potential avenue for success. 4) Potentially Problematic Early Game? What we have found is that the Expedition is the "make-or-break" of the game, players either get hooked on it or leave in it. And that's good, the game is not meant for everyone, some players are too casual or require easier wins which we never planned to provide. With that said, the regular slow trickle of players maybe would have remained for a little while if the initial flow of the game was more entertaining. This may be resolved later, and if so, we are still not sure how maybe the players begin in a school / monetary / order/barracks, each class of its own, experiencing a small specifically directed introduction to the game before going on a ship to the Edgeworld. This is just one suggestion. We are still looking for bright ideas to improve on it. So, basically, this is what we are struggling with at this point in time. We are still working 11 hour days, every day of the week, to get the game up on a running horse, metaphorically speaking. (How the hell would it not be ??) We appreciate your companionship! If you read this you surely care a lot about the game and this is, even though it's not obvious, very helpful and morale-boosting. By the way, a new trailer is out! What We Do As you already know, we are self-publishing this game. It means marketing, as you already see, is not of the best quality. We still work hard on getting people to play it, sponsor influencers, and be posted on worthwhile places. Since we have to deal with a somewhat peculiar problem in which players leave because there are not many players in yet. We thought about releasing a mobile port, which would share players with the PC port. That is mostly in order to populate the game with more players since the mobile market is slightly more straightforward in terms of marketing. That's not our primary goal, but an option nonetheless. We will try to keep the game updated weekly while focusing on low-hanging fruits and quick wins in terms of first-time experience and retention. We focus less on creating more content and more on marketing at the moment, but this will surely change as soon as the ball starts rolling. Thank you for your patience!

Features


  • Expedition is now complete! With the final boss & layer implemented!

  • You may now see other party members on the world map.
  • From now on you may "Hold" an ability button to keep on casting it instead of re-pressing the button.

  • Hopefully fixed the lag in the stone-face boss chamber
  • Critical bug in which English was translated to a less clear English in dialogs and other text fields.
  • Knockback will no longer append current velocity but overwrite it.
  • Mob spawns has been increased when far from town.

Hi! As you know the game is still not marketed in any way shape or form. You probably don't wonder why but let me assume you do; This is because we have made a mistake and released the game on the holidays without pre-booking with marketers and influencers. Everybody during our release time was on vacation and out of the office, so we had no choice but to wait until the 3rd of January, at least! in order to contact people again. After that will be done, negotiations over paid-nonpaid collaborations will also take some time but this is what's possible at the moment, and as you already know, I'm working non-stop! what we plan at the moment is to have multiple influencers release videos on the game in a "burst", so we would hopefully secure a situation in which players will enter a game that contains other players and avoid the vicious cycle of players entering an empty game > leaving > other players to come to see no one >, etc... So in short, we will try our best to get more players into the game as soon as people come back from vacation!

Version 0.44 - Move While Casting & Scrap

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate!

Changes:


  • Can now move around & jump while casting spells/combat, (this may be reverted in the future if players would find it less fun.)
  • Willow King Boss modified to be less frustrating.
  • Antlers Mask has been slowed down
  • Splash ability is casting faster but does slightly less damage.
  • Movement Effects through abilities will no longer be based on movement speed
  • Water Shield bubble will now reduce damage but not make you completely invulnerable.

New Features


The expedition has been expanded with an additional layer, the Swamp!
  • New swamp specific expedition map
  • 6 New monsters!
  • 2 new bosses!
  • 6 new items which may be dropped from these bosses.

  • a BANK has been added, you may now access your account by talking to the new NPC in Sunset Port!
  • Resurrection due to chamber completion in the expedition will result in a curse for the player who died, for the rest of the expedition.

  • Items' On Hit effects will now trigger every second hitting the enemy (e.g. Fire Orbs).

Bugfixes


  • No longer getting a soft-lock from talking to the "sheesh" NPC.
  • When gaining a curse, the screen effect will now show a proper title.
  • Potential cases in which a lagger will affect other players should now be prevented.
  • Will no longer be stuck dead if a map change has been done while dying.
  • Homesick Gem fixed
  • Emotes are now displayed BEHIND masks and hats.

Notes


We are still working hard to solve all of the issues in the game, development-wisely, we now plan to focus on proper money & item sink and guilds, among other small suggestions and bug fixes. We also now aim to increase the concurrent players in the game. Thank you for playing!

Additions:

We now plan to focus on: Light marketing experiments, More things to do with gold and items you don't use, Guilds, Trade, Bank, More Expedition Chambers / Bosses, Additional World bosses, Player Suggestions, Balancing and Bugfixes! Final Note: As you can already see, we try to make sure the game is a safe and stable stage for marketing, we wouldn't want a whole lot of people to have a bad first impression, I believe we are not far from giving quite a good impression!

Version 0.4 - Patch Changelog

Major Changes


  • Solo Content \ Open World - Be Introduced to the first region in the Edgeworld, an open world area with many new maps to explore, enemies to hunt, and quests to complete!
    • As well as secret areas / quest-lines / day and night content
    • a new world-map!

  • A New Challenging 10-people boss - The Tower Lord
  • Quests - Many NPCs around Edgeworld now offer players Quests, with many new rewards (A total of +28 new quests!)
  • Items - Most items have been heavily revamped, to create a better experience, improved balance, and sense of progression.
    • All existing items on the player will remain, but their stats may be altered (Apologies, this is necessary for the game's future!)
    • Many new items have been added to the game!
  • New Monsters - More monsters have been created in order to populate the region with interesting / relevant / more fitting enemies.

Dev Blog 2 - Open World

We have spent the past week laboring day & night in order to create a worthwhile solo-content experience.
I am proud to announce that we have gained, at least in my opinion, quite a lot of ground on that goal! We have implemented each and every location in the map above, as well as secret areas, which are hidden around the newly added region!
We also have created the infrastructure for Quests, EXP / Loot from world enemies, support for Mac & Linux, a slot machine to the tavern? as well as fixed some issues / bugs along the line.
Our current goal is to complete all of the planned quests to the region, 3 new, actually interesting, world bosses for 10 players as temporary end-game content, leftover bug fixes and a bunch of more suggestions buy you guys, that we have found worth prioritizing.
This, accompanied by new items, balancing and tweaks, is ambitiously estimated to be delivered NEXT WEEK, (9/12/2021) - 8am PST.
The thing is, there are so many suggestions and so numerous as well as diverse new ideas, our task list is huge, so we have figured the most important thing to do now is prioritize properly since we don't generate enough revenue to grow and increase our capacity of goods-per-patch, we must instead recognize the more immediate issues and deal with them first.
We also plan to accompany this somewhat big patch with a fair share of experimental marketing, to draw in new players, as well as old back into the game. We have to get those who have found the game disappointing, due to the lack of solo content, and things to do while waiting for an expedition / or due to loneliness because people don't wait around when there's no solo content. - back in for another try. Hopefully, some bad reviews would change back in our favour! I wouldn't lie, the past week has been as fun as it has been full of work, and am really excited to see how people perceive this heft chunk of solo content! Dev Blog 1 - Shed Some Light

Alright, even though this is the fourth post today on our behalf, it is still necessary to an extent. What we have expected from the release: It may seem pretentious but MMORPG's are rare, and for a fair reason, they are quite hard to create. Alongside that, and the fact that there is only about one other game similar to this one, you end up with a very small amount of witnesses that may predict what will happen if such a game releases. So what is the plan? Our plan was to, at best case scenario, in which celestial intervention somehow gets players to play the game nonstop, we will have at least 2 regions, in which, at least 3 realms support the amount of traffic. And in the worst case, we may:

  • Test the servers stability / stress response.
  • Find out what people like & What we should focus on.
  • See what breaks / Makes the game.
  • Know if hackers / unknown glitches ruin it.
  • Predict if the economy will break due to player intervention.
  • Assume how difficult it is to other players since it is a quite challenging game.
What we ended up is a bitter-sweet experience, on the bad side 1,000+ players have installed the game on the first day, didn't have the patience to wait for other players to queue (Rightfully so) and alt+f4 right away. This is free to play, after all, nothing to lose. Mostly because of a simple oversight, no single-player content. I don't know what went through our head not predicting this scenario, this is, more than anything else by far, is what brought retention to an extreme low. On the good side, players really appreciated the innovative nature of the game, the challenging expedition, in which we have poured many hours designing, and most importantly, see what we aimed to sell in this early release; a bright future. Another good thing is that we didn't push on marketing at all. So, we may have the chance to implement a few key features and test them on a small group sample before we invest capital towards bringing vast amounts of players into the game. More about us: The core of the team "XPloria" is made out of 3 developers.
  • Ben, which is I. mostly in charge of the client-side / art / production of the game.
  • Cliff, which develops the back-end as well as some front-end of the game.
  • And Nativ, which is in charge of sound / audio / music design.
  • Supporting us are many freelancers who mostly contribute a whole lot of art / graphical assets.
We have released / worked on many products before, this is the first time we work together though. As for the future: We plan to work as quickly as we can in order to add many features. A proper roadmap will be released in the future, the lack of one is mostly due to more feedback we still need to gather from players, about what they gravitate towards and what they find too clich / clone / boring. The near future will mostly focus implementation of solo content, we do not want to rush it, yet would prefer having it out as quickly as possible. Other things prioritized are critical bug fixes and a worthwhile guild-like system. Finally, after those are more social mechanics for the tavern / world, two additional layers to the expedition and PVP. These priorities may change, more suggestions would most likely be added / things may seem more necessary than others. I hope this had shed some light on things and that you will find the patience as well as enthusiasm to keep in touch with Element Quest. The next dev-blog would be more interesting, including light-shows as well as screenshots / what is usually seen on a post such as this.

Micro Bugfix - For critical issues with the game / players not appearing

Two fixes have implemented in this silent update, they will address some critical issues, for those who can't launch the game, try to re-install. It may work after doing so. If you still encounter launch errors, try, at least in the meantime, to make sure your anti-virus does not block Easy Anti Cheat, or, Element Quest.

Post Early Access Release - Second Hotfix! & SERVER MAINTENANCE

Note, the server will be down for maintenance at 9 AM - Pacific Time for approximately 30 mins,

  • Buffed Earth and Water class to deal more damage.
  • Air Whip no longer buffs with movement speed.
  • Water bless heal range increased
  • Added "ABORT EXPEDITION" Button in the side menu
Bugfixes / Misc adjustments:
  • If someone disconnects in expedition and everyone else is dead, automatically exit the expedition.
  • Writing in chat will no longer vote for rolls / party invites / etc..
  • Sped up chat scroll sensitivity.
  • AFK time is now MUCH longer (2 Hours)
  • Spawn slime descrption fixed
  • Abilities will no longer be obscured by Expedition Que panel
  • Spawn on the left side in the wizards map
  • Game may start muted bug fixed
  • Warning windows when entering a 3 player or 5 player expeditions.
  • Some map fixes to where wind may glitch trough colliders.
  • Shield item description fix

  • Salamander Jump height increased
  • Smaller Block Mobs Nerfed
  • Buffed Splash ability with more damage for the Water class
  • Buffed Mudshot ability with more damage

  • Changed spawn slime orb to spawn less slimes
  • Removed irellevant loot from block boss
  • Fixed some dialog text in the training expedition
  • Added a huge yellow arrow above the expedition NPC
