The Dungeons are still here!

Weve noticed that some of you that prefer the classic Backpack Hero gameplay cant find it anymore. Dont worry though - its still there! You dont have to go through the Story Mode and unlock everything to enjoy fighting foes in the dungeons with all the items available.



You can find the classic gameplay with everything unlocked under the Start Quick Game option!
We see that the name we chose for this mode caused some confusion - sorry about that! Were thinking of changing it so that its easier to find. Classic Mode, Dungeon Mode, Standard Mode, or maybe something else? Let us know if you have any ideas!

1.0: The Biggest Changes From Early Access

Some of you might be wondering: so, whats actually different between the 1.0 and Early Access version?. Well, wonder no more - here are the main features that came with Backpack Heros full release!

[h3] Meta progression[/h3]
Something many of you have been waiting for! No more throwing you in at the deep end - your journey will begin with the basics. The game now guides you through the dungeons, gradually unlocking more and more possibilities to fight more and more powerful foes. All the loot will have an impact on your future runs and the towns development. Plan your actions well - you can unlock new items using the ones youve already found.



[h3] Story Mode[/h3]
Meta progression is strongly connected with yet another feature introduced in 1.0 - Story Mode. It comes with a whole new gameplay experience that adds hours of fun! You can discover the lore and meet new characters while rebuilding the charming town of Haversack Hill. Taking things step by step, following the questline, and gradually unlocking new things will help you learn Backpack Heros basic mechanics - its a great option for both players new to the roguelike world and seasoned backpackers looking to discover the stories behind the characters they know well!



[h3] We know that not everyone wants to jump into the Story Mode - you can still find the classic gameplay with everything unlocked under the Start Quick Game option![/h3]

[h3] Achievements[/h3]
Achievement hunters can now begin their quest to complete them all! Unlock 35 achievements - some of them youll unlock by simply playing the game, but some others require a lot of effort! We have ideas for many more, but thats for later

Its been a wild ride, and we couldnt be more grateful to you for joining us. Your support has been crucial since the very beginning. When the game was making its first steps on itch.io, when we did our Kickstarter campaign, and of course from the day 1 of Early Access, it was you who helped us make Backpack Hero a reality and shaped it to become what it is today


Who here still remembers what Backpack Hero looked like over a year ago?

[h3] The games gone through a lot of changes.[/h3]
If youve been with us since its early days, you might still remember where it started. We added 4 new characters (yes, at first it was only Purse!) and then reworked 2 of them, designed over 800 items and more than 100 enemies, introduced controller support, got Steam Deck verified but also allowed you, our community members, to become an integral part of the development process with countless tests of new features and incredible mods youve created!

[h3] But probably the most exciting part of 1.0 is Story Mode.[/h3]
It introduces meta progression between runs and balances the learning curve for new players - something many of you have been asking for! Thats why were incredibly excited for all of you to experience it, follow the adventure at your own pace, and discover many secrets that Haversack Hill hides. We cant wait to see how you plan the towns layout!

[h3] The story doesnt end here.[/h3]
The 1.0 release is the beginning of yet another adventure! Well keep working on Backpack Hero - some of our plans for the future updates include implementing Kickstarter rewards (and a Summer Event as we promised!), adding even more items, more NPCs and side-quests in the town. We have many ideas for more music, better mod support, maybe revamping the holiday events. And of course, as always, bug fixes and balance improvements.

That being said, we know that there are still some things waiting to be fixed - check the FAQ post on the forum for the list of known issues.

Haversack Hill The Basics #3

Lets take a look at one last thing about the Story Mode. Well, two last things to be more specific - selling and researching items!

[h3] There are a few ways to make good use of the stuff you brought from the dungeons![/h3]
You can simply sell the loot in the Store to get all three kinds of resources in return. Of course bigger items are worth more than smaller ones, and the rarer the better! But theres one more building where you can earn resources by selling things. The Bank allows you to exchange them for Treasure!



[h3] You can also use items to get more items![/h3]
and better ones! There are many buildings where you can discover new, more powerful equipment! But to unlock them, youll have to use the stuff you found in The Dungeon. In the Tavern you can research new consumables. The Library lets you unlock relics. Look for weapons in the Barracks, for armors and shields in the Blacksmith, and in the Fletcher for bows and arrows. Then theres the Magical Mycelium where youll research magic items.



[h3] But you can research more than just items![/h3]
In some places you can research other things, for example new decorations for the town - youll find them in the Greenhouse. But you can also research exciting quests! To do that, youll have to build the Bounty Board. Finally, once you build the Town Hall, youll be able to access all the research buildings from there - no need to run around the town anymore!

Today well talk about the town again. Lets take a look at Haversack Hills inhabitants and their quests this time!

[h3] Encounter over 30 new NPCs![/h3]
If youve read the backstories of our heroes, you should already know a few of them! Purse's father, Louis, or CR-8's rescuers, Matthew and Constance, are some of the familiar faces. But theres more!



Youll meet a wide variety of colorful characters who will assist you in rebuilding the town, researching new items, and gaining insights into the world around you. Zaar, the shopkeeper, will guide your initial steps in Haversack Hill. Doug, the skilled carpenter, will demonstrate the intricacies of constructing various structures. Miss Burrough will enthusiastically educate you on the history of your hometown, the dungeons, and essential gameplay fundamentals.

With plenty of friendly faces nearby, be sure to engage in conversations with these characters to discover the many secrets of Haversack Hill!



[h3] Prepare for new challenges too![/h3]
Some NPCs will give you clear objectives to conquer within the dungeons, equipping you with the necessary tools for success. There's more to discover beyond the coveted golden cheese! Each quest will infuse your journey with diversity and an extra layer of challenge. Sometimes youll have to keep the starter items the entire run!



Completing the quests will help with not only rebuilding the town, but also pushing the story forward and letting you dive deeper into Backpack Heros lore.

Bug Fixes:


  • You can now connect buildings to the Town-Hall via Bridges
  • Fixed issue where items could sometimes move into Pet Pouches when swapping
  • Fixed fonts for other languages for conversations in town
  • Fixed fonts for other languages in the "Resources Gained" panels
  • Corrected damage calculation for the Scratch attack
  • NPCs are now alphabetized in the NPC menu of the overworld
  • Removed the energy-cost from Prada's Locket
  • Tasty Flies now have to be given directly to the Merchant - instead of just lifted from your inventory
  • Removed the second boss-fight from the Frozen Core in quick runs
  • Fixed issues where searching from the Town-Hall for connected buildings could be unreliable
  • Removed Forge-Slots from Blessings
  • Fixed translation for the "Sacred Sword"

Haversack Hill The Basics #1

Have you tried the Story Mode on the testing branch already? How do you like it?

To make this new experience as pleasant as possible for you, we want to tell you more about Haversack Hill basics! Well start with the resources you need to rebuild the town, and the buildings themselves.

[h3] Lets go through the resources first![/h3]
There are 3 new kinds:
food
building materials
treasure



How to get them? Easy - by selling or scrapping items from the dungeons! Bigger and rarer items are worth more, so fill in your backpacks to the brim!

You can use the resources not only to construct new buildings in Haversack Hill, but also conduct research to unlock more powerful items. Some buildings will also generate certain resources while youre busy in the dungeons, for example the Temple will produce treasure, and the Blacksmith - building material.



[h3] Speaking of buildings...[/h3]
...there are so many different kinds to discover! From simple houses thatll allow you to increase your population, through farms and greenhouses, to military facilities like Fletcher or Barracks, there are ~50 new constructions to place in Haversack Hill and turn it into a proper town.

Many buildings allow you to not only get resources, but also research items. Look for new consumables in the Tavern, visit the Library to learn about powerful relics, or stop by the Magical Mycelium to unlock more magical items!



Your buildings placement is also quite crucial! If you want to increase their effectiveness, make sure to combine your strategy skills with city planning knowledge. Put the Fletcher next to the Barracks, add commercial decorations around the Store, or connect the buildings with the Town Hall to boost their efficiency!

Town Testing Hotfix #4

Bug Fixes:


  • Fixed translations which the last update broke (Sincere apologies to all on the testing branch!)
  • Fixed an issue when trading relics to the Shady Trader
  • Added a back-button to the NPC menu
  • Expanded the NPC menu to four columns
  • Fixed the card for the fishing shack, which wasn't properly explaining that it needed to be near water
  • Removed the prompt to interact with the fishing shack
  • The controller prompt for doors now re-appears after doors are unlocked
  • Fixed issues where the game would soft-lock after defeating Pochette/Satchel/Tote
  • Fixed lag, which occured on summon enemies
  • You cannot click a second save-slot while the first one is loading
  • Scratch is effected by Spikes.
  • Rage and weak effect scratch - it cannot do less than 1 damage
  • Fixed issue where Pochette's conversation could overlap "End of Combat" events
  • Fixed offset componenets including the Capacitor, the transformed director, and the heavy grinder
  • The Ethereal Blade only destroys itself at the start of your turn - it won't constantly destroy itself if no mana is attached
  • Fixed a typo in Stumpy's conversation when you get attacked
  • Fixed an issue where the Jeweler couldn't be moved after placement
  • Fixed the "Mayor_FirstHouse" conversation
  • Items in pouches no longer display text errors
  • You cannot open the options menu while in a conversation
  • Fixed a message that would display incorrectly when reorganizing your backpack in combat

  • Fixed issues where you could view the cards of items when viewing a pop-up window
  • Fixed an issue where Tote could take more than 1 carving after a battle
  • Tote's carving interface works more smoothly with the controller
  • You can now stop CR-8 charges with "Y" on the controller
  • Updated moving Pochette's pets with the controller
  • You can now move blessings during reorganization
  • Items that are removed from your Backpack when replaced by a new item you created, now return to their original position if you pick the item back up
  • The mandatory plush cannot be found except in a quest
  • Fixed conversation with the Mayor. He now accepts the Quillswish Plush
  • Redesigned minigames so they work better with the controller and look better too!

Bug Fixes:
Fixed multiple typos
Added additional protection against items being offset after a load
If an NPC has multiple dialogues, they will go through all of them without the player needing to click on them again
Fixed a glitch where the atlas wouldn't close after viewing tutorials
Fixed a glitch where you couldn't close the Jeweler research window
Fixed a glitch where conversations would sometime appear before combat was fully complete (Coral runs)
Fixed the temple's icon, which was showing as the Fletcher
Updated fonts for foreign languages in several places
Fixed a layering issue when standing in front of the Temple
Fixed a glitch where the Magical Mycelium wouldn't connect to the Town Hall
Fixed Lore items - specifically the "Hymns" which Vivienne couldn't read properly

Youll start from the beginning. Everything you gather will have an impact on your future runs and the town itself. No more throwing you in at the deep end - your journey will begin with the basics. The game will guide you through the dungeons, gradually unlocking more and more possibilities to fight more and more powerful foes. Plan your actions well - you can unlock new items using the ones youve already found. Visit the tavern for more consumables, drop by the jeweler to unlock new gems, or head to the blacksmith to equip yourself with some sturdy armor! With time you will also unlock all the other characters.



[h3] Turn the ruins of Haversack Hill into a bustling town[/h3]
Everything you bring from the dungeons will not only help you prepare better for your next dungeon escapades, but also bring Haversack Hill to its former glory. Join Purses mission to rebuild her hometown! With the loot you gathered you can now get three new resources - food, materials, and treasures that will allow you to demolish the ruins and construct 50 brand new buildings in their place.



[h3] Organize your village just like you organize your backpack[/h3]
Its not just what you build, but where you build it. The placement of buildings and decorations in Haversack Hill will add unique town effects and bonuses to the surroundings. Wanna boost up some military structures? Build barracks nearby! Trying to increase your population? Add more houses!

New enemies, all encounters rebalanced, more player agency!

Hey Backpackers!

This months big update is live now on the main branch!

[h2]Enemy Update[/h2]

The Enemy Update is a big milestone: there are now 99 unique enemy types in Backpack Hero!

We've reworked and rebalanced every encounter in the game, there's more variety in combat, a lot more information, and more agency over your battles and runs (that includes Curses)!


  • Were telegraphing enemy moves and abilities more clearly with new opportunities to interrupt attacks and defend against harmful effects during combat. More information! More clarity!

  • No more curse attacks! Curses are completely GONE from enemy attacks. Meaning theyll no longer throw a wrench in your carefully planned strategies. You never have to get cursed.

  • Curses are a calculated risk Cursed items are fun when you can build around them! Now youll be given opportunities to pick up curses from chests and NPCs in a way that you control: your choice if you want to take them!

  • Old Relics make a return! We heard the complaints that old relics were gone! So we brought back some of the favorites!



[h3]All enemy encounters reworked and rebalanced:[/h3]

  • Significant balance updates to all enemies, encounters, and bosses.
  • New enemy types theres now a total of 99 unique enemy types with countless more varieties, patterns, and encounters for each type.
  • More enemy variety enemies have more attack patterns and unique powers!
  • More counters counter the Robber Racoon from swiping your coins! If you attack him, you can stop him from running away!
  • New enemy powers and hazards unique enemy powers including reactive attacks and 5 new hazards!
  • See enemy powers on their card and with their status effects no more surprise block being added each turn!
  • Old relics are back! We're bringing back the old bombstone, the conductor, the old cotton ball, the cracked bottle, the old stopwatch, and the old shield spirit! These have new names, new sprites, and some small balance updates. But all your favorite effects are back!
  • Bug fixes Galore! Too many to even count!




[h3]New enemies and encounters:[/h3]
This update introduces more than 12 entirely new enemies. Here's a few:

The Kestrel
A new foe from the bird empire!
The kestrel winds up very powerful attacks but if you counter and attack first, theyll cancel their big hit!



Queens Bees
Youve battled bees, now face... ... even more bees!
These bees are much more dangerous than the bees youve fought before. They guard the Queen directly!


Lucky Wraiths
These Wraiths are lucky - lucky for you. Defeat them to steal their luck!



Gremlins
They like money and running fast. They will drop extra coins if you can beat them before they run away!

[h3]Whats Next:[/h3]
The Enemy Update is live now on the main branch and includes more changes and important bug fixes (pouches are fixed) we hope combat and enemy encounters are now where we want them!

This update should be the last major stepping stone before 1.0 we now plan to focus on Story Mode content, quests, and progression.

Story Mode is already in very limited testing and well open it up to the public testing branch in the near future! We cant wait for you to see how these recent changes play out in a more structured adventure!

Backpack Hero Mod Support and CR8 Update!

Backpack Hero now officially supports mods! Mod support is live now on the main branch of the game!

Simply select "Mods" from the Main Menu and you can add in tons of new items!

One of my favorites is the mod from The Farlands Workshop!. You can easily add the mod to your game by subscribing to it on the Steam workshop
I'm also a huge fan of the Plush Mod! Definitely worth checking it out!

That's not all for this update! We have several new things too!
Including:


  • Major changes to CR8! He has all new items, curses, relics, and an overheat mechanic that allows for some wicked new combos, but prevents some of the simpler infinites!
  • CR8 "Gear" builds. These are like cleavers, but for our robot pal!
  • The Cursed Forge! Add powerful new effects to your items at the cost of a permanent penalty applied to them! (Old forges are still there)
  • Many new items including Pandora's Box!
  • Buffed relics! More of the old relics will be added back in shortly!
  • New sound effects and animated backgrounds!
  • The Tusk doesn't effect CR8 components!
  • Improved options and credits screen! Kickstarter supporters can find their names more easily!

Relic Update Hotfix!

Bug fixes from the last update!

Updated translations - specifically Korean and Chinese

Bug Fixes:
Fixed a glitch where the cotton didn't save properly
Fixed a glitch where destroying multiple hazards would trigger end-of-combat effects multiple times
Fixed a glitch where item spaces could be improperly saved leading to CR8 charges being deactivated
You can no longer move on the map while viewing events or the options menu (should fix some associated glitches)
Fixed a glitch with item-creation items. Should be able to use coral and old-log appropriately now.
You can no longer "fire blank energy" after reorganizing or losing energy as CR8. The energy puff will just go away - ending your turn
Improved a delay when you have lots of items in your inventory that was effecting some players
Added another safe-guard to prevent out-of-alignment loading
You can no longer drag items while viewing options and other pop-ups

A new update is here! Weve been working hard on the 1.0 release, so were especially excited to finally give you something big in the meantime!

Totally redesigned relics with changed effects, and some new ones
New events featuring the capybara and the possum
Ghostly items - they cant be detected in your backpack by other items, so you can create amazing synergies
Atlas items can now be organized by character
Several new items (including the wooden knife)
CR-8 can now benefit from energy-giving items - they will add energy to the core
Matthew has been redesigned - youll get different items from him now
Improved performance and bug fixes for mana networks
New sound effects
New art for different doorways


[h3]What can you expect next?[/h3]
Were finally working on mod support! Its super exciting, seeing how many cool new items will be available in the game! We hope to make it available sometime in August. If everything goes well, other kinds of mods will be supported too. New enemies? Custom dungeons? You name it! But thats for later

Other than that, were constantly working hard on the story mode. Thanks to our testers feedback we know that we still need to make a few changes. We've already closed the tester survey, and we wanted to thank you all for filling it out - the number of responses exceeded our wildest expectations! We definitely need a while to process your applications, but keep an eye out for an email from us

Meet The Heroes #5 - Pochette

[h2]Hey, Backpackers![/h2]

Its time for our 5th heros backstory!

[h3] Last but not least, Pochette - a hedgehog with a secret![/h3]
Pets in the dungeon? Why not! Pochettes playstyle is based on cute little creatures that help her during combat! Pets act like individual characters with individual backpacks and different gimmicks. Whats Pochettes backstory? Lets find out!


Pochette was born within the Oakshire Forest during the height of the Long March, where the Badger Kingdom was invading villages across the forest to excavate the dungeon for relics of power. When she was young, Pochettes village was one of the unfortunate places ransacked and conscripted by the Badger King. In the chaos, Pochettes family was captured and sent to be slaves in the Dungeon Mines deep beneath the Badger Castle. Before that though, Pochettes mother sent her in a basket down the Dandylion River so that she may be spared.

Pochette drifted down the current crying for her parents, for what seemed like days she wept - until she was discovered by a kindly hermit crab. The crab who would become known to pochette as Mama took pity upon the small beast and took her under a shell where she would raise her as her own amongst the mysterious tribes of crabs, snails, and insects within the deep Bramble of the wood, where the forest and dungeon become indistinguishable. Thought by most to be nothing but savage animals, those native to the bramble are not uncivilized or unintelligent, just different.



Communicating through body language, feeling, and scent, Pochette learned these things whilst living with Mama, her mate Papa, and Pochettes honorary little sister Bebe. Pochette grew up and thrived here amongst the Bramble Tribes, learning how to navigate this upper portion of the dungeon. Pochette lived happily there for all her childhood, but something changed one day. A beast not too different from Pochette showed up, exhausted and wounded. Pochette discovered her collapsed deep within the Bramble.



Though it was generally forbidden to make contact with the beasts not native to the tribes, Pochette felt compelled to help the wounded creature. Taking her back to the Tribe, Pochette convinced the tribal elders to help nurse the young chipmunk back to health. It was close, but slowly the beast began to regain its health. Pochette, and the chipmunk she learned to be named Duffel became fast friends. Though Pochette knew very little of the common beast tongue, they had an understanding as hunters and explorers in the bramble. Duffel told her of the troubles outside the Bramble and the valiant Patrol of the Oakshire Forest, and how she was an elite scout sent to explore the great Dungeon.



Through their meetings, Pochette began to learn more of the common tongue and of the culture of her blood-kin. Slowly she began to feel kinship towards the people of the Forest - with vague memories flashing before her eyes of the destruction of her village and her parents sending her down the river. Pochette felt a tinge of pain there and at that moment decided to help the Patrol - with some of her best friends, Pochette acts as a guide and emissary for the Bramble Tribes! Though there are many tribes within the bramble, and many are more cautious of outsiders than Pochettes, she is working hard to guide the Patrol through the Bramble, and find a mutual understanding between the tribes and the forest dwellers.

[h3] What did Pochettes development look like?[/h3]
Pochette was the fifth character unlocked in our Kickstarter, and the fourth released. She was actually decided to be added based off of a community poll with three other heroes, and she won it! Don't worry about the three that didn't win though, we decided to add them as post release updates! Their names are Knapsack, Pockets and Bindle.

From the start we had a pretty firm idea of Pochette being a pet based character, and how that would look in an inventory management game. She has proved to be quite a challenge to balance and make her feel good to play - we are still working on that. She has undergone some of the most drastic changes of any character gameplay wise. A lot of players who have been around a while may remember her old way of playing where pets could hold any items instead of treats.

Are you ready to learn about another character?

[h3] Its time to meet CR-8 (pronounced as crate), a very special robot![/h3]
If youre passionate about mechatronics, youll love CR-8s playstyle! Instead of having the energy system, CR-8 has a core that creates a beam which activates items in its path. How did this robot come to life though?


CR-8 knows little of its past. It simply blinked to life one day somewhere deep in the dungeon. It knew nothing about the world or its own purpose. All it had was a feeling of loss and sadness. CR-8 felt that something was missing, something it could never get back.

Sometimes, when deep in the dungeon, CR-8 could hear a call. A call in a voice that once felt so warm and friendly, but has been warped and modulated into something unrecognizable. CR-8 followed this voice deeper and deeper, ignoring the dangers of the dungeon, but it was always distant. After a long period of wandering, CR-8 eventually shut off.

CR-8 was found rusted and in disrepair by Constance, a mouse living in Haversack Hill. She had never seen anything like it! With the help of her old friend, Matthew, they dragged the robot out of the dungeon and attempted to repair it. It was challenging work as they didnt know exactly how CR-8s intricate circuitry worked. They pieced it together as best they could, putting Constance's old clockmaking hobby to good use. The repair wasnt a perfect recreation of CR-8s complex electrical engineering. Most of its wiring had been replaced with clockwork gears after all. But still, it blinked to life for a time!

Unfortunately CR-8 was now required to be wound regularly. But it wasnt an issue at all for the genius duo! This time, Matthew provided the solution. Taking a patch from his magical bag, and an old relic he found deep in the dungeon, he fashioned a power backpack that could keep CR-8 running on a single wind up for days!



Extremely grateful for Constance's help, CR-8 vowed to help her and stay with her forever. Constance loved CR-8 like a child, and CR-8 thought of Constance as the mother it had lost. Or was that a friend? This feeling of loss would never leave CR-8 though, and it would still feel the call of the dungeon. It relayed this desire and feeling to Constance, and she supported him in his quest to feel whole again. CR-8 began to delve into the dungeon looking for the signal it had once followed. It also brought up supplies to help his new mother figure with her research.

[h3] CR-8 might not remember much about his past, but we do![/h3]
at least when it comes to his development. CR-8 was the third character unlocked in our Kickstarter campaign, and the second to be released. Out of all of the additional characters he has changed the least, in that he was always meant to be an auto-battler type character. The method of how he did that went through a few iterations until we found the right feel with his components. Originally he had activation "spaces" in the center of his bag, but that was quickly scrapped.

The biggest challenge of CR-8s development was actually just getting him to work in the first place, and balance. In fact, we plan to have his update that fixes a lot of his long standing issues shortly before release, so if you're a CR-8 fan you have that to look forward to!

Plus, Constance, the mouse who helped CR-8, is one of the people youll meet in Haversack Hill soon!

Meet The Heroes #3 - Tote

[h2]Hey, Backpackers![/h2]

Another Tuesday, another character!

[h3] Today we want to tell you a bit more about Tote, our magical frog![/h3]
Totes playstyle is very different! She mostly uses magical carvings. Due to her mechanic, Tote has her own specific pool of items, but it comes at the cost of being the smallest. Do you want to know more about her backstory and mission? Keep reading!


Tote comes from the Enchanted Swamp, a land in the South of Orderia. Like many of her kind, she spent her youth fascinated by the magic emanating from the Mother Tree deep within the dungeon, and her saplings scattered throughout the swamp. Living in the secluded capital city of Lilymist, Tote grew isolated from the outside world. She spent a peaceful childhood studying magic and was eventually enrolled in the prestigious College of the Dreaming, which housed the Mother Tree's first sapling - the Dreaming Tree.

The Dreaming Tree is said to be a direct line of communication to the Mother Tree herself and to be the ruler of its own realm known as the Dreaming. By communing with the trees, amphibians may begin their learning of magic without the use of mana stones. This is where Totes magical journey began. She was, and still is, a swift learner, quickly rising to the top of her class! In just a few short years she was prepared for her final research project and she would be deemed a full fledged mage of the swamp - a feat that for many can take a decade of studying.



She was preparing her final project when she heard a call for help. A call directly from the Dreaming Tree. A cry for its mother. Tote followed the call that pierced her very being. Through Lilymist and into a hidden entrance to the dungeon, she followed its corridors until it opened up into an underground grove. There she witnessed key members of the college defiling the Dreaming Tree's roots, tainting sap and writing dark sigils across the bark! The tree was being injured not only physically but also spiritually! Tote let out a yelp of surprise, alerting one of the members of this dark party - one of her Professors



Knowing that she found herself in danger, Tote took off down the hallway towards the surface. As she escaped, spells whizzed past her head. She dodged them the best she could until eventually she was hit. Falling to the ground with a thud, Tote laid in a daze. Her former mentor approached her looking rueful. He had always liked her, but she was too much of a goody-two-shoes and wouldnt understand his methods for gaining power. He began chanting a final spell to get rid of her, when suddenly a root burst from the ground, knocking him off his feet. The teacher's spell misfired and Tote was able to regain her senses and bolt up. Then she saw a bag hanging from a root. A bag imbued with the Dreaming Trees essence. She felt the urge to grab it and run. Following Dreaming Trees directions, she headed towards Oakshire Forest to look for Mother Tree.

[h3] Now that you know her story, lets take a look at how Totes changed so far!

Tote was the second character unlocked in our Kickstarter, and was originally named Pouch, but she was the first one we actually ended up releasing. Similar to Satchel though, she went through a lot of changes in her mechanics, which is evident to many players who've been around a while because many of her iterations were released to the public.


Originally she was meant to have mana stones built into her bag, but we wanted her to be a bit more different. We tried a version where her energy was an item in the bag and was used similar to mana, but we also thought that wasn't super fun, so then we came to the idea of carvings and every version of her since then has been an iteration on that, including her most recent rework!

With the campaign announcement released a few days ago, we received some comments from players worried that working on the Purse plushie takes resources (both time and money) away from Backpack Hero development. We absolutely understand your concerns, so we wanted to clarify how we ended up releasing the plushie earlier than the 1.0!

We started working with Makeship last year, when we still believed the game would come out in May 2023. The timeline for this campaign was set since the beginning of our cooperation and unfortunately we couldnt do anything to change it.

We dont invest any money or time in the crafting process. The sales of the plushies fuel the ability to manufacture them. Thats why we need the campaign to fund them. We didnt spend any Kickstarter money on the plushies as we wanted the full amount to be used for the game development. That was also the reason we didnt offer any physical rewards during our Kickstarter campaign!

Were working on the game seven days a week and hope to have some serious new content to push in the next few weeks. Were as disappointed as you are about the delay, but we hope all that doesn't detract from your enjoyment of the game or the plushie.

The campaign ends on July 14th, so we have 3 weeks to reach our goal. Now its up to you whether the perfect packrat plushie goes into production

Meet The Heroes #2 - Satchel

[h2]Hey, Backpackers![/h2]

Its Tuesday again, so its time to introduce yet another character!

[h3] Today we want to share the story of Satchel, our most charming hero![/h3]
Playing as Satchel you can be a true pacifist, using his instruments to charm enemies with beautiful music. But do you know his tragic backstory?


Satchel is a shy but kind-hearted robin, and son of a nobleman from the bird kingdom of the mountains. His father was a generous lord and staunch critic of the three tyrannical emperors of the Bird Kingdom, and worked tirelessly to help the common bird.

Satchel's familial home was destroyed in a raid by the army of the Bird Empire due to his fathers defiance, and association with the anti-crown political movement known as Skylight. The father, who got critically injured during the attack, asked his only son for one last favor in his final moments, as he gave him a sacred relic he had been hiding from his enemies, and shared a terrible secret the Crown had been desperately trying to keep from getting out.


Satchel fled his homeland with nothing but what he could fit in his magical backpack, the sacred relic, and instructions from his father to seek sanctuary with one of his allies in the Oakshire Forest.

[h3] And what about Satchel's journey through Backpack Hero's development?[/h3]
Satchel was the first character to be unlocked in our kickstarter campaign and was meant to be the first character to be released, after Purse of course, but we had a lot of trouble with him, redesigning him four times!


His first iteration eventually became the adaptive challenge, and his second and third were built around the idea of a sliding puzzle. After trying all of these and none of them being very fun, we put him on the backburner to make Tote and CR-8. After designing them we revisited him and came up with the version that made it in the game!


Satchel has also had the most visually radical redesigns of any character. So while our pixel artist, Gangs, thinks Satchel has the most elegant design of any character after Purse, we struggled a lot making him!

Hope you understand Satchel's story better now!

Meet The Heroes #1 - Purse

Hey, Backpackers!

You might have been playing Backpack Hero, but how much do you know about the characters? Today we want to start a little series of posts introducing all of our five heroes - their backstory, characteristics and more!

[h3] Well begin by telling you a bit more about Purse - the face of the game![/h3]
Whether youre a veteran player or just started your adventure with Backpack Hero, youll definitely learn something new about her!


Purse was born and raised in Oakshire Forest, in the small hamlet of Haversack Hill. Once thriving long ago, before the evil Badger King conscripted all of its able bodied beasts towards his conquests of the lands of Orderia and excursions into the Dungeon. Purse lost her mother, Prada in the Great Conscription. Her father, Louis, born weak, was seen as unfit to serve and was left behind to raise the young Purse.

Grown now, Purse has become fearless and defiant towards the Badger Kingdom, like many of the folk in the Oakshire Forest. She sets it upon herself to rebuild her village and put a stop to all of the needless chaos in the world!

Brave, yet naive, serious about her goals yet goofy when she can be, and above all else kind and caring, Purse does not fight because she wants to, she delves into the dungeon to save her village and the ones she loves. She yearns for adventure, but only allows herself that luxury if she can help those that raised her.

Now that you know her backstory, take a look at how shes been evolving! Shes definitely changed a lot and its definitely a glow up if you ask us!

A little extra Early Access...

Hey Backpackers,

We want to give Backpack Hero more time in Early Access.

A while back we announced that the game would leave Early Access and launch on consoles, with a new story mode, in May it's been a huge undertaking and we need a few months to get it in great shape.

Working with you all in Early Access has made a huge difference, we'd like to keep going and share a new release date once we are confident in a great 1.0!

[h3]What's happening behind the scenes?[/h3]
We're focusing on three things right now:

[h3] Core gameplay and balance[/h3] We've come a long way, Backpack Hero has gotten BIG! There's now five heroes, each with their own mechanics, and over 700 unique Items this is a huge level of complexity to test and iterate. We are incredibly grateful for your feedback so far we think there's more we can do for every hero and item to feel balanced, interesting, and fun.

[h3] Porting to consoles[/h3] Were working on bringing Backpack Hero to console players as soon as we can! Developing ports alongside Early Access is complex, but we do have support from a few talented folks. Its a team effort, but we mostly get to focus on new content and polish for 1.0.

And look, here's Backpack Hero on the Nintendo Switch!



[h3] Story Mode[/h3] We're all kinds of excited to give you a closer look at the biggest update so far!

This update introduces a whole new Story Mode and the village of Haversack Hill: a place to make your own, learn about the world, and discover Purse's story.

Why do endless dungeons sprawl beneath Orderia? Where does the magic Backpack come from?



Above The Dungeons, you'll rebuild your own little village!
Items from the dungeons are very useful in Haversack Hill use them to build up and decorate your village, expand your available pool of Items and heroes, attract new villagers, make friends, and pick up new side quests to complete in the dungeons.







Just like your backpack organization matters, the placement of buildings and decorations in Haversack Hill will add unique town effects and bonuses. Its not just what you build but where you build it!



Story Mode means a lot to us. It does the important job of expanding roguelike progression between runs and balances the learning curve for new players, two of the most requested features in Early Access.

Its also a delight, a way for us to explore the world of Backpack Hero beyond The Dungeon.

We know this is important: Story Mode is a lot of new stuff, but it doesn't replace the way youre playing Backpack Hero right now.

We're keeping the option to launch straight into classic dungeon crawling from the main menu run challenge modes with all heroes and Items unlocked - just like in Early Access.



[h3]What can you expect next in Early Access?[/h3]
Testing the Story Mode! We plan to move Story Mode development to the public testing branch before 1.0, and we want you to be involved in how it's shaped.

You can also expect bug fixes and balance updates to the core gameplay. With 700 Items theres now a huge amount of content to work with, so we can focus more on the fun and depth in every single run.

Twitch integration just got more exciting!

We promised to expand Twitch integration when we first introduced it some time ago. Well, here it is - the updated version just made it to the main branch! It's a major improvement compared to what we released in February.

[h3]Twitch integration now works with every character and many more aspects of the game![/h3]
Will your followers bless you with loot, or play against you and enjoy watching you suffer? It's time to find out!
Your chat can decide which boss you'll face and what relics you'll get after the final fight.
By voting on items, effects on you and your enemies, blessings and curses, the chat can make the dungeon feel like a walk in the park or a marathon through hell!
You can customize the poll settings to decide what your viewers can affect.



Things can become extremely demanding now, as you have to not only plan your own strategy but also keep the chat's moves in mind. Sorry we cursed everyone! We heard you cursing the new system and we are working to resolve the difficulties!

Here are the changes we implemented!

New Stuff:
Added the Little Lamp

Enemies will give you a curse status effect and you can remove the status effect before combat ends to avoid curses
When cursed, you get a choice of 3 cursed items to take
You can not get more than 4 of your combat rewards replaced with curses
There is a curse-counter next to your gold with an additional tooltip
Lantern can be used twice
You cannot use lanterns on already cleansed curses
Bats will never do more than 1 malady and their vampire attack is reduced
Fire Geckos will never add 3 fire hazards
Fire will not spread until the end of the turn

Curse Update on the Testing Branch!

We have new content on the testing branch!

New Stuff:
Added level-up music
Added music after you complete a level
Completely redesigned the curse system
Added 20 new cursed items
Added 6 new cursed carvings
Added 12 new hazards
Added the lantern, which removes curses
Updated all events that use cursed items to deal with curses more clearly

Changes:
Updated the golden whetstone and dice so they have a more standardized "Alternate Use" and can be used outside of battle
When you lose you can now retry or return to the menu
Hazards now spawn closer to the player's backpack
The living shadow now looks like the player
Removed the Robber Racoon from the 3-Hare-Defender enemy encounter
Replaced the 2 Sable encounter with an encounter with the muskrat brigand and 1 sable
Enemies take 2 more turns before scaling the power of their attacks
Changed the way items are reorganized in combat. Now there's no separate skip button
Items created in combat appear closer to the grid and be easier to place in your backpack

Bug Fixes:
Removed plasma sword from Tote's drops
Removed Emerald Bracelet from Tote's drops
Fixed the Wasp Honey in the item atlas
You can now walk past Scavengers

  • Recalling all pets now requires energy (as stated)
  • The search in the Item Atlas now opens the Steamdeck keyboard
  • Updated the tutorial so it is more compatible with controllers / Steamdeck
  • Fixed a glitch where enemies lost rage/haste before their action
  • Using the Die at a Pet Burrow will now create new pets
  • If you used a spare die before a regular die, you still get the extra item picks!

Pochette's Rework is here!

Pochette has been entirely redesigned! Her new version is live now on the testing branch! No more scrolling between multiple inventories. No more losing energy when you move a pet! This new character has been getting rave reviews from our internal testers. I hope you enjoy them!

A new update is here, and with it with two highlights we're excited to share with you:

[h3] Totes magical re-rework[/h3]
The Tote rework continues! With your feedback on the latest changes, we added a few more items for her to use, as well as improved abilities: now you can do damage based on the amount of carvings in your bag, while discarding them.

She also got two new skins and looks absolutely magical now!



[h3] Twitch integration is live[/h3]
Let your chat help you, or, more likely, mess with you as you storm the dungeons! Your viewers can now vote for items that you get as combat rewards. We're trying out Twitch integration with items right now, but were excited to expand it to different aspects of gameplay soon! You can enable Twitch integration in the options menu!

Major character reworks coming in February!

Hey, Backpackers!
Weve noticed that not too many of you name Pochette or Tote as your favorite characters, so we decided to rework them and make them more lovable for you. You can expect a rework of these two later this month!


After many team meetings, a lot of discussions and reviewing feedback from players, we determined that our goal should be to make the interface more clean and user friendly. We want to simplify both characters a bit, too.

[h3] Pochette[/h3]
Our main goal is her pets. They will work more similarly to pouches - youll be able to open them and store items in them. Thanks to it, Pochette will gain more flexibility. This also means she'll have a larger and more standardized backpack of her own!

[h3] Tote[/h3]
Tote will have illusory spaces removed. She'll get carvings more frequently and she'll need to use them more often to succeed. This will highlight her uniqueness and make things less confusing for you!

Come join the testing branch to see the reworked characters in action yourself and share your feedback! Tote should be available there sometime around the end of this week, and Pochette will join her after a week or two.

We're also thinking about some item reworks, but that's another story...

Thank you for a great Winter - and a great year!

Backpack Hero was first released on Itch.io a year ago today! Over the past year we released the game, started a business, ran a Kickstarter campaign, released the game on Steam, created four new characters, added new levels and enemies, ran several events, added controller support, and literally hundreds of new items!

All of this is possible because of you! Thank you for supporting this humble little indie team! We hope to make Backpack Hero the best that it can be!

Update on the Testing Branch

Our winter event is ending soon! We already have the new update on our testing branch! I hope you had a good time! For now all festive items will disappear, but they'll be added back as an optional run in the near future!

Added a proper loading screen

Bug Fixes:
Fixed the "Delete All Saves" and "Delete all progress" buttons

Then from the "Betas" menu choose the branch that you want to download. Please note that the Testing Branch is for testing. Yes it has the newest stuff, but it's also likely to be glitchier. You can now open the pouch in combat - but you cannot use the items inside
The pumpkin king now appears later in the dungeon - making it easier to get 7 scary items

Notes:
This is our first major update using analytics to balance the game. All changes were based on feedback from the community, conversations among developers, and supported by analytic data about enemy lethality and item popularity. This is the largest "balance" update we have done and we hope we got things to a better place. But if we missed the mark in any way, please let us know!

An amazing first day!

Thank you to everyone who has supported the game in Early Access! Our launch was far better than we ever expected! If you haven't already, please leave us a review. They really help!

We're devoted to making this game as good as we can! There will be bug-fixes and new items in the next week. And next month we'll be introducing our fourth character - Satchel! There's tons of new content on its way including more items, more enemies, more bosses, more lore, and much more!

One of the biggest concerns has been meta-progression. Right now when you die, the game is over and you don't get any permanent upgrades. This will be resolved shortly! The game is in Early Access and we have new content being worked on! Each time the player does a run, they'll get permanent resources that they can use to upgrade their town, plant plants, build buildings, and attract new villagers! This will be released by February of next year, and we will work to have some meta-progression in the game even before then.

Early Access Preview Update!

A new update to Backpack Hero has now been posted! This is a preview of the features that will be in the Early Access version of the game. This might be the biggest update we have ever released! Here's what is included:

Made it so Mimics will not spawn on Boss floors

Translation Update!

Hello all! This is my first set of patch notes on Steam! I have made some updates to the testingBranch of Backpack Hero!

Glitches
Fixed a glitch with the Return to Menu button
Changed the Plinko event so you cannot drop the Buckler down the side


Changes
Made it so you can return to events repeatedly
Merchants buy only one item - but it sells for twice as much as before
Added in a second costume for Purse
Created translation files and the option to change language
The explosive arrow starts at a lower base damage but has no modifier multiplier
Helmets and footwear disable helmets and footwear to their right, respectively
The Hawkeye Bow now fires arrows in both directions!

New Content
Added in the Brass Knuckles
Added in a new biome - the Bramble. This includes new music, several new enemies, and new bosses
