DEV DIARY #5
Hello all! It's been a whilte! It's time again to share with you what's been going on with AEGIS Kingdoms! If you don't like reading paragraphs, there's a TL;DR at the bottom of this post! Alternatively if you want to read this post on our website, you can do so here: https://aegisgamestudios.co.uk/aegis-kingdoms-dev-diary-5/ Likewise if you just want to watch a short 45 second video, here you go! [previewyoutube=5Nd4bjrvDXI;full][/previewyoutube] News on AEGIS Kingdoms has been very slow and that is entirely my fault, so let's get on with it shall we!
CURRENT STATE OF THE GAME
The new skilling features are now fully in the game. This is awesome, as it means open weekends (Alpha) will not simply be combat (which is what it was going to be previously - hence the delay!). So now you can do combat, gathering and crafting. This is very similar to old school games like RuneScape, so those of you familiar with this feature will be right at home. For those of you unaware with how this works - very simply you will need to complete actions in order to level up a skill. For example use a Greatsword will level up your greatsword skill, allowing you to equip better greatswords. The three areas of skilling go hand in hand, as you'll harvest resources to craft with and then use them in your adventures. The current maximum level for a skill is 99, with unlocks along the way. You can simply click on the appropriate skill to see what it unlocks at which level. So in terms of the game-ready state of the open weekends, feature wise we are there and ready. The final change is the updated art style which is currently being developed. This, in short, is simply moving away from stock assets and having bespoke art for the game.
NEW CHARACTERS AND ART STYLE
The new art style is for the characters first, as this is the biggest task with all the modular armours, as is taking the longest to turn around, however the results are coming out well and it's been great to work with our artists on this. These are some WIP screenshots of the new characters and armour:
As you can see, it retains the low-poly look, but there is a distinctive style for AEGIS Kingdoms, which I couldn't be happier with. As we progress there will be more armours, both that you can craft, as well as unlock through gameplay & MTX.
COMING IN THE NEAR FUTURE
- In the next dev diary I'll talk about how the balance between horizontal and vertical progression is being done. This was a fun system to design and I think strikes a good blend between having good stats, and also being able to access armours that are cool looking without needing to have crazy amounts of gametime.
- Faction Reputation and Factions are coming to the game soon. This will be the Relic Hunters to begin with. This is pretty cool as you'll be able to earn a lot of unlocks through questing for the various factions, which will also incorporate your trade and combat skills.
- [MOVED FROM LAST DIARY] Instances and how they are handled will be coming to AEGIS Kingdoms in the near future. This has some pretty big, but positive, rammifications. It means faster loading screens and we're closer to having instanced arenas, dungeons, minigames and player housing (by extension possibly guild halls). So this is exciting!
- [MOVED FROM LAST DIARY] Party-Mode PvP (Minigame) will make an entrance in the future. You will "register" with an NPC, and then be teleported to a Hub where you'll be waiting until the match starts. You'll then be teleported to an arena to fight. It will feature different game modes that rotate (hence "party mode"), as well as specific game modes only being available on specific days. I.e "Free For All Thursdays" etc. This will be a latter update post the various skill updates.
- [MOVED FROM LAST DIARY] Vanity pets to accompany you on your adventures are on their way. Look for the arrival of the pet store!
- [MOVED FROM LAST DIARY] Duelling is coming to AEGIS Kingdoms soon. Exclusively for challenging you friends outside of safezones.
- [MOVED FROM LAST DIARY] Player Titles are coming to AEGIS Kingdoms soon. More on this later.
- [MOVED FROM LAST DIARY] PK PvP Toggling is coming to AEGIS Kingdoms soon. Toggle on PvP to start rampaging against others who want to do the same!
- [MOVED FROM LAST DIARY] Player Shops are coming to AEGIS Kingdoms soon. More on this later.
NEXT UPDATE FOCUS
This is about getting the new characters in the game, and then moving onto launching the open weekends.

DEV DIARY #4
Hello all! It's been a whilte! It's time again to share with you what's been going on with AEGIS Kingdoms! If you don't like reading paragraphs, there's a TL;DR at the bottom of this post! Alternatively if you want to read this post on our website, you can do so here: https://aegisgamestudios.co.uk/aegis-kingdoms-dev-diary-4/ It's crazy to think the last Dev Diary was back in the beginning of May, and here we are at the end of July. A lot has been happening behind the scenes, so let's get to it!
CURRENT STATE OF THE GAME
As mentioned in this post, and in this post we announced that AEGIS Kingdoms will be launching into "Alpha Island Access" which is where Alpha Knights (our testers) can play AEGIS Kingdoms on the weekends. Become an Alpha Knight here (click the green registration button). Alpha Knights will have free roam of Mistral - an ancient island in the Southern Kingdoms. It's lower-to-sea-level landmass makes it a great destination for travellers looking for adventures. As mentioned Mistral will very much be a "tutorial island" of sorts, however there won't be the too much restriction over where you travel or what you do. In the grand scheme of things Mistral is actually a rather small island when compared to other landmasses in Sor'res. But Five... You said this last time! What's new???? Well my dear readers, I made a bit of a boo boo in June and made some decisions that had some unintended consequences in the development environment. This was basically just a lot of errors and problems that needed solving due to an ever evolving multiplayer framework that we use to build AEGIS Kingdoms on. Mix that with the custom additions made on top of that and it becomes a lengthy process when something breaks or needs upgrading. So the sad, rather disappointing truth is that sometimes things simply just break and take time to fix. That being said, the next question you may be asking is "was it worth it?" and I'm glad you're asking this... Because yes. Yes it was worth it. Now let me tell you about the new features that are here:
PROFANITY FILTER
A staple feature in every game that has online chat, the beloved profanity filter has been added. For the time being, this will be enabled permanently, but don't fret! For those who like to live life in the fast & spicy lane, there will be a toggle option to disable it later coming in a future update.
It pretty much does exactly what it says on the tin. It filters rude and profane words from messages sent in the chat. It would irresponsible to not do our part in ensuring AEGIS Kingdoms is a safe and inclusive environment, and that means protecting users from derogatory and hurtful messages. I personally don't believe that such an awesome community would stoop to such lows, however this is simply a failsafe should someone decide to cross that line. Of course you won't, because you're awesome.
ITEM RECOLOURISING
Does this really count as a feature Five? Yes. Yes it does, stop trying to derail my Dev Diary imaginary other side of this conversation! ... Ahem. I've been spending a copious amount of time recolouring the art assets that we use to ensure they are aesthetically pleasing and represent the correct metals used when crafting the items. As you can see below, the Bronze Weapons are now looking like... Normal bronze weapons! Which is good!
For those game dev tech savvy, this was editing the UVs and colour palettes of each Bronze item (too many to put on this dev diary), which is foundational for the rest of that type of weapon. In the future for any colour variations, it makes life a lot easier when changes the colour palettes, ensuring content can be released quicker, too. Noice.
WEIGHTED LOOT TABLES
No image for this one, just a satisfying understanding of what weighted loot tables are. Rather than be based purely on a percentage liklihood of dropping an item, there is now "weighted" bias that can be applied. This means if you have 100 items that a mob can drop, a health potion might be it's most common drop and rare items be even less likely to drop. This is all thanks to weighted loot tables. Mobs in AEGIS Kingdoms now have weighted loot tables for this exact reason, with many of them having much more common drops and others having very hard to achieve / rare drops within it's loot tables.
SAFE ZONE INDICATORS
This feature simply highlights above a player's head if they're in a safe zone or Sanctuary. It will tell you whether you're safe from combat, or whether you can be attacked.
At present the icon is a glowing white star, but this may change in the future. Feedback is welcome, so let us know what you think!
DIALOGUE OPTIONS
This is a rather small, but immersive feature. Previously in games you may have been given a nickname that all NPCs would address you by such as Adventurer, Dragonborn or Deputy etc. Now when NPCs of AEGIS Kingdoms talk to you, they'll address you by your character's name as seen below in the (slightly blurry) screenshot below.
This is just a little feature aimed to add ever so slightly to that immersion, and hopefully help you feel a tad more at home in AEGIS Kingdoms.
QUEST TRACKING REWORK
Quest tracking has been changed ever so slightly so that toggling which active quests are tracked is a bit more intuitive. This is both in the quest summary that can be toggled on the left side of the screen, as well as from the quest log.
GUILD FOUNDATION REWORK & IMPROVEMENTS
Whilst Guild features are not currently available, we've been making some changes to the "foundational mechanic" that will act as a base for Guilds. These improvements include reworking the design and functionality of how we'd like guilds to operate in AEGIS Kingdoms. The plan is to release Guilds as a dedicated update later on.
DROP RATES CHANGED
This is a minor note to say drop rates have been changed up a bit to make things a bit more fair across the board, and inline with the weighted loot tables. You'll find more health potions and bronze items, but occasionally rarer items that can be looted off common and more difficult mobs.
ITEM EXPIRING & TEMPORARY ITEMS
Temporary items and item expiring is making it's way to AEGIS Kingdoms. From temporary mounts & travel forms, to weapons and armour that you want to try before you buy. Now you'll be able to do this. These features are quite staple to MMO games and as a team we thought it would be useful to have it. Personally my reasoning for it is as mentioned: sometimes you want to try out a weapon or an item but you're not sure that you want to commit to spending all that gold on it. These will help with those situations. Likewise temporary mounts and travel forms will offer a similar experience, as well as go-between before you get your first permanent mount or travel form.
HITBOXES UPDATED
Previously we had a single hitbox that would receive damage if hit, now that's been split up between body hitboxes and a head hitbox. The various hitboxes will have different multipliers of damage based on the location of your strike. Headshots will do slightly more damage.
GRAVITY, JUMP HEIGHT AND FALL DAMAGE
One of my favourite additions to AEGIS Kingdoms has been the stat modifiers for gravity, jump height and fall damage. These features are technically part of the "Adventure" content rather than the "Relic" content, but I just love them. From potions giving you temporary slow falling, to boots that allow you to jump very high and complete parkour challenges. There will also be items allowing you to receive less fall damage, giving you a niche advantage in some situations (PvP, boss fights, you're clumsy and fall off things a lot etc...)
OTHER CHANGES & ISSUES
- Minor UI changes have been made to notify you of what you're acquiring completing actions such as killing mobs and receiving items.
- Lots more lore has been added to the AEGIS Kingdoms Lorebooks in our Discord. You'll need the "AEGIS Kingdoms" role that you can get from the #assign-roles channel. If you would like to read about AEGIS Kingdom's extensive lore, now you can!
- Some issues with inverse kinematics, foot and hand placement have arose. These features have been disabled for the moment whilst it's being investigated.
- Potential fix for falling through the world has been added.
- Global loot timer is now set to 15 minutes. After this droppped loot will be lost forever.
- Loot lock timer is now set to 7 minutes. After this anyone can pick up your loot.
- Player corpse expire timer is now set to 15 minutes. After this the corpse will be destroyed and any loot will be lost forever.
- Mob corpse expire timer is now set to 1 minute. After this the corpse will be destroyed and any loot will be lost forever.
- Party EXP Share distance has been increased to 20 metres. Outside of this range you will not receive shared exp.
- Party Item Share distance has been increased to map wide. If you are in a party, regardless of distance, you can loot mobs killed by party members.
- Camera issues persist and are being investigated.
- New item icons have been made!
- In PvE areas, you will only drop your inventory. Equipped weapons and items will remain upon respawn.
- PvP areas is full loot. You have been warned.
CHANGES AND CLARIFICATION ON AEGIS KINGDOMS
This is something you may notice on the AEGIS Kingdoms Steam page. The description has been updated to reflect the intentions of AEGIS Kingdoms and why it's being made. However it can be summarised rather easily: AEGIS Kingdoms is a heartfelt project, harking back to the days of close-knit gaming communities and private servers. As a developer, my aim is to foster a vibrant, inclusive space, not a commercial product to shove down your throat. This free-to-play indie game offers a cozy realm for adventurers to interact and engage in a multiplayer journey together. While there is an optional premium subscription to support the game's development, it doesn't limit the gameplay for non-subscribers and is only there to support on-going development. The creation of this game is focused on building a fun community which I invite everyone to join, which at the moment we are gathered on Discord whilst the game is in development, and partake in shaping the world of AEGIS Kingdoms. So AEGIS Kingdoms was never meant to be a commercial game, but instead just a fun and inviting space for people make their "home game".
COMING IN THE NEAR FUTURE
- As mentioned the hotspots around Mistral are mostly for skilling, combat and questing, however there is also an element of exploration. Due to the horizontal nature of combat progression, the difficulty in mobs you face will be a mixture of higher damage & health, as well as faster and stronger enemies. There are also cases where force multipliers will be used, too. What this boils down to is your ability to maximise how effective you can be as an individual player, and how best to overcome the various enemies you face - it won't simply just be the ability to out-damage enemies.
- Instances and how they are handled will be coming to AEGIS Kingdoms in the near future. This has some pretty big, but positive, rammifications. It means faster loading screens and we're closer to having instanced arenas, dungeons, minigames and player housing (by extension possibly guild halls). So this is exciting!
- Party-Mode PvP (Minigame) will make an entrance in the future.
- A premium subscription feature is currently in the works. As mentioned, this is for those who would like to support the on-going development of the game. This will not be available during the Open Weekends due to the limited access of the game.
- Vanity pets to accompany you on your adventures are on their way. Look for the arrival of the pet store!
- Duelling is coming to AEGIS Kingdoms soon. Exclusively for challenging you friends outside of safezones.
- Player Titles are coming to AEGIS Kingdoms soon. More on this later.
- PK PvP Toggling is coming to AEGIS Kingdoms soon. Toggle on PvP to start rampaging against others who want to do the same!
- Player Shops are coming to AEGIS Kingdoms soon. More on this later.
NEXT UPDATE FOCUS
The focus is STILL (still?) on the Open Weekends and getting Mistral (and by extension AEGIS Kingdoms) to a point where it is playable and there is enough varied content to keep you occupied. So focus after the initial release of "Alpha Island" (aka your access to Mistral), will be the combat skills. Combat skills track your progression in a given combat style. For example using a "2H Sword" - the more you use the 2H Sword, the more you will gain EXP for it, and level it up. At certain levels, for example level 5 - you will be able to equip different aesthetic-variants of the 2H Sword weapon-type. The higher your level, the more access to rarer cosmetics will be available. It is important to note that these cosmetic variants will NOT have any additional stats for the most part and will perform the same as a regular 2H sword. HOWEVER there are some exceptions with some Legendary (Orange) and Mythical (Crimson) items, which will have alternative stats. You will need to have progression (high levels) in a variety of trade skills (gathering, crafting & combat) in order to equip these. In some cases you may also need to have completed specific quest(s).

DEV DIARY #3
Is it time for another dev diary already?! Wow the time has certainly whooshed past! It's time again to share with you what's been going on with AEGIS Kingdoms! If you don't like reading paragraphs, there's a TL;DR at the bottom of this post!
CURRENT STATE OF THE GAME
As mentioned in this post we announced that AEGIS Kingdoms will be launching into "Alpha Island Access" which is where Alpha Knights (our testers) can play AEGIS Kingdoms on the weekends. Become an Alpha Knight here. Alpha Knights will have free roam of Mistral - an ancient island in the Southern Kingdoms. It's lower-to-sea-level landmass makes it a great destination for travellers looking for adventures. Mistral will very much be a "tutorial island" of sorts, however there won't be the too much restriction over where you travel or what you do. In the grand scheme of things Mistral is actually a rather small island when compared to other landmasses in Sor'res. You can see a crude sketch of what our vision for the full AEGIS Kingdoms world map will look like below.
Mistral will be acting as the primary location for players to quest, skill and progress until we go into Early Access. When we head into Early Access, our focus will be the continent Ophelia, with a latter focus on the additional continents post launch in expansion content. At present, Mistral's zones are still being developed. The full size of the current terrain is 12km, which equates to around 3.58km in length and width, however the actual "playable" areas are much more condensed than that as much of it is either mountainous or submerged. The aim of Mistral is to continue to test, as well as provide playable content so in the beginning there will not be a huge amount to do other than level up, quest, buy, trade & explore. In later updates, we will be launching Weapon Skills where you will gain levels when you use a specific weapon type. For example using 1H Swords to fight will level up your "1H Sword" level. At various levels you will gain access to exclusive cosmetics. The higher the weapon skill, the rarer the cosmetic. It should be noted, however, that all combat is horizontal in AEGIS Kingdoms meaning that all "1H Swords" will do the same damage. However you will need to find your own play style as each weapon type has pros and cons - i.e some weapons are faster but do less damage, others are slower but deal higher damage etc.
In the above screenshot you can see that we are achieving a very similar shape to the original "scribble" (sketch?) for Mistral, albeit a little better laid out. There are multiple hotspots laid out around Mistral where you can explore, quest and otherwise engage with the world. These hotspots will become more fleshed out as we progress. At the moment they are still very bare bones and in need further refinement. There are no trade skills yet, so characters will not progress any levels in combat, crafting or gathering. This will be worked on soon, but we want to get you into the game first. Instead you'll be able to level your character up, buy & sell, complete quests, ride mounts and own pets. There are a variety of mobs (at various difficulties) as well as bosses. We are also looking to have some dungeons in a later update. As we continue I will shed more light on the progress of new updates.
COMING IN THE NEAR FUTURE
As mentioned the hotspots are mostly for skilling, combat and questing, however there is also an element of exploration. The exploration aspect of AEGIS Kingdoms to designed in such a way as to not guide you too much when you play. It will be down to you to explore as much or as little as you like. We've taken inspiration from games we love such as RuneScape and Sea of Thieves. There's an element of vertical skill progression, but the horizontal nature of exploration and combat. Quests are optional, but will help you level up and give you fun rewards as well as later on adding factions with faction specific content. There are also fun gems hidden around the place, and more that will be added in the future. AEGIS Kingdoms is a living, breathing environment so we will be changing things around a little from time to time. Moving and re-hiding things to continue to keep things interesting and fresh. Striking that balance between not having the game go stale, and not change too much.
NEXT UPDATE FOCUS
The next focus after the initial release of "Alpha Island" (aka your access to Mistral), will be the combat skills.
TL;DR
- AEGIS Kingdoms is a game set in the world of Sor'res where players can explore, progress and quest.
- Mistral is the primary location for players to play before the launch of Early Access.
- Mistral is still being developed but players can level up, quest, trade, explore and engage in combat, but no trade skills are available yet.
- The game has a horizontal progression system for exploration and combat, but vertical progression for skills.
- A focus of the next update will be the introduction of combat skills which track progression of weapon types.
- AEGIS Kingdoms is a living environment, and the game will continue to be updated with new content.
[ 2023-05-02 09:15:13 CET ] [ Original post ]
Over the last few months we have been working towards getting AEGIS Kingdoms into a state where you, the players, can jump in and have some fun. Thats mostly been fixes and backend stuff like making sure you dont fall through the world randomly (weirdly happened more than we wanted it to) or having your progress deleted. You know Small stuff. Now Im excited to say that we are moving towards our next milestone which means tangible stuff that you can get involved with!
Community Clashes:
- Community Clashes are fun community events that allow you to earn rare and exciting rewards. Youll keep what you earn on your character (unless absolutely otherwise game breaking), so theyre a great way to help us test the game and for you to get some cool stuff & have some fun!
- Community Clash V is the next big thing were going towards, as its a community event. Join the Discord for screenshots, GIFs and updates about Community Clashes.
Alpha Island (Open Weekends):
- We will reach a point soon where server access is open to Alpha Knights. To become an Alpha Knight you will still need to request access through the Steam page. Youll then get access to the Alpha Client.
- Access will initially be limited to weekends (Friday evenings to Monday mornings UK time), but if demand is high, we may extend this further.
- New updates and content will be added as we progress, and eventually the world will be slowly opened up as we continue.
- No timeframe for this, it will happen once we are ready but we are now actively developing this so provided there are no issues, it should be rather soon.
- We will be posting more about this now in our Discord so join us there for a little more insight!
DISCORD & COMMUNICATION
Weve also been spending some time making the Discord look a little more pretty. We use this as one of our primary communication methods for posting updates, but appreciate not everyone uses it. So moving forward were now branching out to other media platforms such as Steam, Twitter & YouTube. See whats coming new below:
Frequent Dev Notes:
- Dev Notes will now being made more frequent on the Discord for a more transparent awareness regarding changes, updates and the likes. Again, this will mostly pertain to Alpha Island, but also Community Clashes.
- Weve also started posting dev notes directly to Steam, but these are currently only visible on the Test Client. We will be moving over towards the main AEGIS Kingdoms news for greater visibility.
Tweets:
- These will echo what we are posting on Discord, in a condensed manner. This is primarily just small summaries and fun posts. Please dont expect these too often, were still in the process of developing a Community Management team.
YouTube:
- Well be creating some shorter videos to provide some information on AEGIS Kingdoms. You can see that on our YouTube channel.

DEV DIARY #2
We are now entering the second quarter of 2023 already, and we'd like to share a little about the current progress of AEGIS Kingdoms with you. If you don't like reading long paragraphs - TL;DR is at the bottom of this post!
CURRENT STATE OF THE GAME
We're closing down the days until we are ready to start organising Community Clash V. One of our most recent Network Tests (small tests that we announce on our Discord for users to get involved with) has shown us that we've finalised a solid foundation in which to build content on. It's been a long time coming to reach this point and it really feels like a corner has been turned. Game development can be very difficult and lots of things can go wrong during the process, which many of our players know when it comes to these network tests. So being able to say that we've finally got a solid foundation feels like win, because it means now focus can be shifted onto the Clash content without worrying if what we are doing will hurt the long term health of the project, or throw a curve ball at us. So all of this feels great, is rewarding after a lot of hard work and overall provides more motivation to keep going! There are two larger hurdles to overcome before we can host the Clash, however: 1. We have a bug where players will fall through the world, seemingly at random. At the moment we're not sure what is causing this, but it's been a bug that has existed for a while now (since at least Clash IV). It's been the cause of many headaches and annoyance. Once this is fixed it will, however, make our Relic builds the most stable they have been ever. So as you can imagine, a lot of focus is on this. 2. Camera issues have arisen from a new system we are now using. Specifically for those familiar with Unity, this is the Cinemachine package. In the long term it will provide the ability to have cutscenes and close ups during conversations - however for now it's having collision issues which are currently being ironed out. Whilst a minor inconvenience - it can cause some horrible camera stuttering and unwanted zooming. See a short GIF on Imgur: https://i.imgur.com/LOzBRRC.mp4
FUTURE FOCUS
We're currently also testing content for permanent alpha access. At present we are only hosting network tests and Community Clashes, but we are getting ready for a time when AEGIS Kingdoms Alpha will be available to play all the time. Additionally progress earned in this time will be honoured and carried over into full release (provided it's acquired through gameplay and not through exploits & bugs). We will be calling this "Alpha Island", and have a lot planned for it. Once Alpha Island access is open, we will then be releasing content periodically to continue to update the game. This will continue from Relic content, to Mercenary, Adventure, Engineer and finally Settler content. We are currently testing travel forms & mounts, pets and potentially also player housing. (We will share a LOT more on this when the time comes.) At an appropriate time, Alpha Island will close and AEGIS Kingdoms will transition into Early Access (Beta) which will open up a lot more of the map and game. We're a while away from this latter part, but Alpha Island is on the horizon.
FINAL THOUGHTS
The team is excited for the future, we're proud of the work that's already been done and ready to face what lies ahead on this journey. I absolutely LOVE travel forms. I can't get enough of them. Can you be addicted to your own game? Is that allowed? Final, final thought? If you're reading this I want to tell you a secret. Are you ready? ...There's a travel form that you can ONLY unlock after maxing out your character. It involves a very difficult quest, max faction reputation & skills and a very high player level... But if you persevere & succeed you will unlock one of the coolest mounts / travel forms in the entire game... The Draconic Lord Form, which comes combat enabled with it's own abilities & buffs - only possible by forging a Draconic Lord Mimic Stone. BUT it gets better... that is only the beginning to the ultimate end-game content. There is another hidden, evil option to transform yourself into an antagonist and play against other players, enabling PvP permanently. You will transform yourself into the very thing that all the races of Tillaris and Sor'res united to fight against... But only after you've unlocked the Draconic Lord Form, and progressed in another hidden faction, which at their maximum reputation, will provide you with the ultimate, rarest, most sought after ability, travel form & race in the game. Only THE most powerful player in AEGIS Kingdoms will get this far. But anyway, if you enjoyed this type of post, let us know!

Firstly, thank you to all who tried and did manage to login and participate in the network test today! If you're reading this you may have received an email inviting you to test the game. Apologies for any confusion this may have caused - we do not have control over how Steam words this email. For clarity - it was Steam's way of letting you know you were accepted into the current testing group (and have officially become an Alpha Knight - which is what we call our testers! Woo! ... And then Beta Knights when in beta etc etc). You can join our Discord for some exclusive roles, and also there will be in-game content given out once we reach perpetual server access. (At the moment our game servers are only open for tests). For those of you who have not been keeping up with AEGIS Kingdoms news - we are currently in a testing phase, but don't worry - you didn't miss out today. Today was just a network test as we needed to see how registration would handle, whether some of our fixes were working for high-ping players and overall to see the stability of our game server. However the test you are invited to is the COMMUNITY CLASH! We use these Clashes as a means to help us build the game in bitesize pieces. We call these tests Community Clashes - and they're a fun way of people getting involved, experiencing the game and helping us gather crucial data for the game. Community Clashes have some of the latest features, as well as some experimental features. They're normally fun PvPvE game modes of many kinds, but serve more as a friendly way to test the game. They focus on one of the main gameplay factions, which you can read about more on the store page of AEGIS Kingdoms. In the interim when we are preparing for Clashes, we also have minor tests like today's network test. These are mainly for finding large, game breaking bugs (of which there were a few). We'd rather have these bugs found now, rather than on important test days. We've identified a large issue with the registration system and have decided to move to a different method which will hopefully negate the need registering and logging in, in the first place. It remains to be seen how effective this will be overall, however. Again, thank you for joining in or attempting to join in! We are going to schedule another network test soon. In the meantime, you can join our Discord for the latest info about the game, get involved in tests and get private access to tester channels! I look forward to seeing you all in-game soon! - Five, Lead Developer.

DEV DIARY #1
Its a new start to the year and with it comes (youll never guess what) new stuff! One of which is our dev diaries. These arent patch notes or major updates, but just a means to talk a little about the current state of the game, how things are going and really just pulling back the mystery curtain on indie game development. If you don't like reading long paragraphs - TL;DR is at the bottom of this post!
A LITTLE HISTORY LESSON
AEGIS Kingdoms originally started out life as Battle Clashers, which was an events platform we were developing for multiplayer battles. This was the precursor to community clashes, and meant as a fun event for the community to get involved with. We even went as far as to re-build a new arena and game each time we did this which later evolved into the AEGIS Kingdoms platform that we now have. From there, AEGIS Kingdoms was known as a TMORPG which stood for TINY multiplayer online roleplaying game, with the emphasis on a small community, small game world. We made various prototypes and explored various ways in which we could achieve this. Currently we only have 2 videos on AEGIS Kingdoms, both a little out of date, calling this game such a title (a TMORPG). However weve simply moved away from terms like MMORPGs or alternative variations on a theme. Instead the focus is on crafting a shared, online world. We prefer this distinction as primarily as that is exactly what it is: a shared space for you to enjoy solo, or with others. Its not a particularly big game, nor are the features revolutionary however it is a community focused game where your character can enjoy living. We think thats pretty fun!
CURRENT STATE OF THE GAME
Over the last year weve been experimenting with the multiplayer framework that we use, building iterations on it, stress testing, and gradually building a game atop it. Weve since hosted a variety of community clashes in different settings which have allowed us to track various points of data and gather player feedback from our Alpha Knights (alpha testers). At present, AEGIS Kingdoms is in the combat testing stage, which means our current focus on tests is on creating fun combat gameplay. We had initially planned on going straight to PvE after the combat tests, however we havent been completely happy with this. In our latest Community Clash quite a few vulnerabilities and issues were highlighted which most of our time has been spent on fixing. The most prominent has been the higher-ping users who have been falling through the ground. Nothing kills immersion and fun quicker than plummeting to your death on repeat. So thats been a priority and were still testing the fixes. As such, weve got more tests that Alpha Knights can participate in coming in 2023. However rather than leave out PvE entirely, weve incorporated it into the current tests. Whilst not exclusively, Alpha Knights now focus on fighting both mobs and each other. Additionally, due to how the content in the game is broken up (a la factions), it provides us with quite clear cut means to test in segments. As such, we can test a host of features at once that revolve around a specific topic.
The Relic Hunters:
- - Dungeon delving (and the generic shenanigans that come with that)
- - Boss battles (and the fun that comes with that)
- - Rare items / unique items / high value items / quest reward items
- - Rare drops / drop rates
- - Dungeon balancing / mob damages / mob placement / generic dungeon design
- - Puzzle solving / environment challenges / misleading environment design
- - the list goes on!
The Adventurers Guild:
- - Parkour challenges
- - Destination / location achievements
- - New quest types (exploration themed)
- - Cartography
- - Main quest related adventures
- - and more!
The Mercenary Legion:
- - The various ways to fight and kills things.
- - Boss fights / defending / assassinations / hunting etc
- - World bosses / slaying
- - and more!
The Engineers Society:
- - New quest types (discovery, assembling etc)
- - Crafting expansion
- - Placement and procurement content
- - Fetch content (sampling)
- - and more!
The Settlers Union:
- - Crafting focus
- - Crafting quests
- - Housing
- - Resource harvesting
- - Farming
- - Agriculture content
- - and much more!
FUTURE FOCUS
Well be collating more data in the form of 2 new community clashes this year planned for 2023. Well be improving on the Dungeon Clash from last time for Clash V, as well as a new theme for Clash VI. Well be bringing out more information later regarding the clashes, after our 2023 roadmap post. Clash V will host a lot of fixes and feedback from the last clash, so should be very familiar. Whilst there will be some environment changes, the overall layout, look and feel should be pretty much what is was last time, but better. Some unnecessary stuff will be removed and fixes should make the overall experience much more fun. Of course this is still an early access test so bare that in mind in regards to your excitement and expectations.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Finally all AEGIS games share a common universe. They are all connected somehow and as such we love to jam pack our games with connections, easter eggs and lots of fun stuff. We try not to take ourselves too seriously, likewise we hope that spills over into AEGIS Kingdoms. As with all our tests, games and demos theyre all for bettering our own skills and overall game quality so that we can continue to bring out fun and engaging content. Whilst it has been a long ride to get to this point, we are happy with the progress and look forward to conquering more challenges in the future. Hello there!
If you're reading this then you've most likely recently wishlisted AEGIS Kingdoms. Firstly on behalf of the team I'd like to say thank you! Your support is invaluable and brings us much joy to know you're excited to play our game! If you don't like reading long paragraphs - TL;DR is at the bottom of this post! We've recently announced on our website (and on our Discord) that we will be launching some testing weekends, meaning we'll be allowing access to the game world on the weekends for testers. It's a means to help us measure metrics, find various bugs and analyze some much needed combat data (you can never have too much combat data...). However, rather than letting you all loose into Ophelia, our current focus is on the Relic Hunter faction. In keeping with this focus, we've created a baby, minimized version of the AEGIS Kingdoms client specifically for the tests to help us get the data we need. So you can think of this as an alpha version of one of the many dungeons that will be available for you to explore in AEGIS Kingdoms. Furthermore, before the testing weekends begin, we're launching our fourth Community Clash! If you've not participated in one of these before, please see the FAQ below!
When is the Community Clash?
The Community Clash is on Saturday, 1st October 2022 @ 19:30 GMT+1 - Visit the Discord to register your interest to become a Tester.
What is a Community Clash?
A Community Clash is a fun, semi-regular event that we run for a little bit of fun. It's normally some form of 'versus' event that pits players against each other. The game mode and rules change on each Clash and can be anything we want it to be. From a survival game, to Team Death Match, to Battle Royale. It could even just be a race. Whilst there is a little competition, it's all friendly and meant to be a fun experience. The Clash is open to everyone to participate!
How do I become a Tester?
To become a Tester, join the AEGIS Game Studios Discord and follow the instructions. After you've successfully become a Tester, you'll be invited to the Super Secret Tester Discord and be given a Steam Key to download the Dungeon Client.
What's the theme of Community Clash IV?
Clash IV will see players launching into the dungeon on a pursuit to find the Throne of Stars. The first one to do so will be crowned a winner and given in-game and Discord rewards. This clash is a full-loot PvPvE event which means if you die, you'll drop your inventory. This means players will be able to take your items, so think tactically about how you play. Furthermore there are a variety of obstacles, puzzles and mobs in the way between you and your prize. You will have quests that will guide you in advancing along the path to glory, but there is no specific order in which you must complete them.
Are there any new features?
The Dungeon Clash client is a condensed, baby version of the much larger AEGIS Kingdoms client. Unlike other clashes, this clash boasts some brand new features and fun never seen before in Clashes:
- - Full character customization
- - Persistent inventory & management features
- - Player Activated Traps
- - Automatic Activated Traps
- - Locked Doors with certain requirements to open
- - Hidden doors (who knows where they lead to?)
- - Boss fights
- - Wide variety of mobs at varying difficulities
- - NPC shops to spend earned in-game currency in
- - Lots of item drops
- - Lots of cosmetic pieces
- - Lootables of varying rarity
- - Pets (purchasble and lootable)
- - Quests to keep you on track
- - Achievements
- - Player titles
- - Leader board
- - Some fun easter eggs (try to find them!)
- - ...and more on the way!
Will my progress be saved?
Unlike in previous clashes where you were playing as 'champions' that you couldn't customize, you now get to make your own champion, customize them AND keep all the items you find in the Clash to be used again next time. In the very unlikely case we have to do a character wipe, a gold reimbursement will be given to all players to purchase some armour and weapons.
Will more powerful players easily kill me?
There is no difference in weapon damage between a level 90 player and a level 9 player. Those of you following AEGIS Kingdoms know that horizontal combat is a pillar in the AK game loop. That is no exception here, with lots of competitive weapon combinations to choose from, we're looking forward to seeing the carnage!
Final thoughts
We've very much looking forward to Community Clash IV, and the test weekends. There will be a little gap between the Clash and the test events to ensure that if any game breaking bugs or issues arise, that we have time to fix it. Another announcement will be made when the test weekends If you'd like to keep up to date, join the Discord for a chat or keep posted by visiting our website (https://aegisgamestudios.co.uk) where you'll see the latest news and information!
