Hello guys!
We are happy to finally make an official announcement of Heads Will Roll: Reforged's third DLC Threads of Destiny. It is scheduled to be released on November 28th and will massively expand the game with four new story branches. As always, the DLC will be accompanied by a major patch that will bring along lots of various additions, reworks and improvements as well as a considerable amount of new content for the base game.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/3172940/Heads_Will_Roll_Reforged__Threads_of_Destiny/
So, what to expect?
1. New story branches
Threads of Destiny will add four new story branches allowing the player to have even more freedom in choosing their own path. Defecting to the French side, joining Grace and Glory on their head-hunting adventures, offering your mercenary services to the lords of Italian city-states or seizing the English crown for yourself and completing the ultimate journey from a peasant to a king lots of possibilities that were previously only hinted at will now become completely viable options filled to the brim with new adventures, characters and dangerous challenges.
2. Combat system overhaul
The combat system is going to receive a huge overhaul with all character's stats being rebalanced and new various bonuses introduced. The majority of existing weapons will have their movesets expanded with new attacks, many of them scaling from character's stats or through other conditions. At the same time, some other weapons and weapon classes, that were previously too well-rounded, will be tweaked a bit to better reflect their realistic advatages and disadvantages. Together with that, the game's arsenal of weapons, items and trinkets will be seriously expanded by all kinds fresh additions.
3. New interactions with allies
Members of the player squad will now start to more regularly interact with the player, responding to his behaviour in a positive or negative manner. Hiring honourable knights and crusaders and then commiting unvirtuous actions (or hiring thungs and criminals and then behaving like an upstanding christian) will naturally spark a discontent among your men leading to arguments, desertion or maybe even something worse. On the other hand - performing actions that will resonate with the members of your squad will make them train and fight harder or go out of their way to aid you in unexpected ways. These interactions will also extend to the combat sections with allies now being able to hand you over various items - spare shield or weapon if yours is broken, a couple of extra crossbow bolts if you ran out of ammunition or a specific consumable item if you're in need of one.
4. Improved civic talent system
The overall structure of the civic talent system will remain the same, however it will receive a number of important improvements. The majority of civic talents will be reworked, generally becoming more potent and effective. The upgrade points, on the other hand, will be harder to come by, giving more important to the player's choice of talents.
5. Proving Grounds
The patch accompanying the DLC will also introduce public access to the Proving Grounds - a special game mode that allows the player to create a custom character with a specific set of stats and items and then duel against various enemies.
6. Bugfixes
And lastly, as always, the update will bring a long list of bugfixes for various issues. These are the key elements of the upcoming update but the whole list of changes and additions is far from over. We are very much looking forward to release and hope that you are too! Ahoy!
The perfect moment to start playing Caribbean Legend! https://store.steampowered.com/app/2230980/Caribbean_Legend/
First, the important stuff:
- Patch 1.3 is available. We've never done anything like this before as a studio.
- Starting NG is not required. We recommend loading version 1.2.1 saves made while on land.
- Today marks the game's second 'release'Steam will be actively promoting it for two weeks.
- To celebrate, we've set a historic low price50% off.
- Now's the perfect moment to start playing if youve been holding off for any reason.
- Black Mark DLC is out now.
What's New:
Ships
One of the goals of Patch 1.3 was not only to rework the remaining player-favorite early-game ships but also to lay the groundwork for the planned boarding scenes. The ships turned out great.
New ships:
- The Valkyrie
- The Meifeng
- Fluyt
- War Schooner
- The Principio (DLC)
- Improved sail and rigging quality for all ships in the game.
Quests
Extinguished Star Weve never created a quest this complex, non-linear, and intricate before. It has everything: new content with Mary and Helen, direct impact on the main storyline, cutscenes, crazy flashbacks, and valuable loot. The quest starts at the end of "The Dutch Gambit" and continues through to "Turtle Soup." No spoilerssee it for yourself.
Black Mark A non-linear quest, designed for the early stages of the game, offering valuable rewards and nods to veterans of the "Sea Dogs" series. Available in both Story and Sandbox modes. Part of the "Black Mark" DLC.
Rewards include: a duelling double-barreled pistol, an Italian rapier, an Army broadsword, a Black Spot ward, armor, as well as a new officerTommy Irons, and the legendary Pink of Nicholas Sharp, the Principio. The Pink is stunning, but the true star of the DLC is Irons. He's got killer jokes.
Locations
No new locations in this patch, aside from a few scenes for the Longway quest. The boarding decks took up almost all of our time and will continue to do so. All four decks will be included in either Patch 1.3.1 or 1.5. However, we did update several old locations, especially those that significantly lagged behind the newer ones in quality. Locations update:
- Locations and scenes for the "Extinguished Star" quest
- The Old Lighthouse
- Port Royal Lighthouse
- Several beaches
- Indian village
- Improved ground textures in towns.
Animations
We continue the challenging journey of bringing quests, battles, and cities life to life. The minimum program has already been fulfilled, and with Patch 1.5, we aim for something even more ambitious. Next-gen is just around the corner.
New animations:
- Unique animations for the "Extinguished Star" quest
- 7 new contextual death battle animations
- 2 prayer animations in churches
- 2 animations for drunks in towns
- Tavern musicians no longer drown out the games music
- Fishermen, blacksmiths, and musicians now work according to the time of day
New Hero
Due to popular demand, Helen McArthur is now a fully-fledged character in Sandbox mode. She is compatible with the "Vile Little God" and "Black Mark" DLCs. She has unique dialogues in her hometown Blueweld, unique achievements, loot, and starts her pirate career on a war schooner. For now, she doesnt carry a musket or visible armor, and there may be some "gender errors" :rofl_pirate: in the dialogues. Her development will continue in Patch 1.5, along with other Sandbox characters.
Notification System
Traditionally, games in this series have never been known for being player-friendly or transparent, often requiring guides. What happened to my character? Why did I fail a dialogue check? What reward did I just receive? Any game needs to communicate with the playerand now Caribbean Legend does. I consider this the key feature of Patch 1.3.
New notifications:
- Over 100 new format notifications on sea, land, and in dialogues
- Combat statusesfrom poisonings to critical damage
- Loot markersso far, only for plants in the jungle, but this is just the start
- Quest navigationso far, only for the beginning of the game
- More quest markers over characters and on the global map
- New tutorial videos for core game mechanics
Interface
Lets be honest, we have the best interface. But somehow, the list of fixes for it has already stretched to three pages. :rofl_pirate: The first half of the first page finally made it into Patch 1.3.
UI update:
- Unlimited key remappingadjust the controls to your liking
- Control hints in loot, trade, and exchange windows
- Highlighting new entries in the ships log and documents
- Highlighting available skill points for characters
- Keeping the selected character when switching tabs between inventory and skills
- Displaying character roles in officer assignment windows
- Improved interaction with items in the inventory
- Added a DLC button in the menuif all are purchased, it will be inactive
Miscellaneous
- 13 achievements
- New ward
- New sword
- Automatic crash reports sending - let's see how bad it really is out there
- Longway can now carry muskets
- New dialogue camera
- Missing textures restored for some objects in the "Flying the Jolly Roger" quests
- Claude Durand now reliably triggers his loyalty event after a set time
- Obtaining a patent removes pirates from the crew
- Reputation no longer drops if the player exits "Flying the Jolly Roger" questline before Cartagena
- Fewer soldiers in towns, and they stop the player less often
- Chance to deceive the guards can no longer exceed 90%
- Governors no longer ask you to infiltrate friendly towns
- Passengers no longer ask to be taken to hostile towns
- "Iron Will" perk no longer allows intimidating officers
- Missing item descriptionsskill bonuses, etc.have been added
- Additional optimization of the tutorial on Martinique
- Spelling and grammar corrections - thanks to all reports you have been sharing on Discord
- Numerous bug fixes
- Improved overall game stability
1.5
Thats all for now! Over the past six months, weve done an incredible amount of work together. Weve done everything possible and even more. Except for the Story mode epilogue, of course. We could have done it already, but it would have been too... simple? I want to create something special and worthy of Charles de Maure's storycall it a "directors cut" of his storyline, if you will. Plus, the game has long needed list of truly new mechanics, fixes for old ones, a complete rebalance, a new loot category, and a proper uplift of Sandbox mode. Not to mention improved controls, gamepad support, Steam Deck experience. Patch 1.5 will take at least six months, and it will definitely require starting the new game. So for now, well take a short break, rest, and then get back to work. Leave reviews steamthumbsup as blue as the Caribbean Sea, download the patch, buy the DLCand if youve been putting off playing the game for any reason, nows the perfect moment to start!

Hello guys! I'm happy to inform you that the game has been updated to the version 1.5k. This update brings in both several important bugfixes and a little injection of new content. With this patch out of the way I intend to gradually begin the work on the next big update: the third DLC and an accompanying major patch that will rework stats, civil talents and some aspects of the combat system. A first look at the third DLC will be available at the time of its official announcement that should happen in August. Changelog of the patch 1.5k: 1. Lowered the soldier rep requirement for accessing Rennes. 2. Fixed an issue with eneimes sometimes taking infinite turns (often happened in Damanhur). 3. Fixed an issue with player still being able to sometimes die during the French interlude tournament despite the game telling you that it is not lethal. 4. Added another important low virtue event to Maidstone. 5. Completing Roger's quests now gives access to a specialized equipment shop. 6. Added random encounters with Scottish forces during the last chapter of Canterbury campaign and a reward\punishment for completing\not completing them. 7. Lowered dire wolves' weapon skill. 8. Fixed a bug that made player lose more than one item when giving consumables to allies. 9. Fixed a bug that made player lose one of the trinkets when using trinket presets if they had three or more of the same one. 10. During the Damanhur campaign Raymond's forces will now have 10 crusaders that will consequently spawn in fights until all of them are dead (previously there was only one ally for each fight). 11. Lowered the amount of enemies in some of the fights of the Damanhur campaign and some of the second DLC campaigns. 12. Fixed a bunch of smaller issues and incorrect interactions. Thank you all for playing and sorry if your experience has been negatively affected by the technical issues. Cheers! 1917 Studios
Hello guys! I'm happy to inform you that the game has been updated to the version 1.5j. Changelog: 1. Fixed an error that resulted in "player_fatigue_pool_displayable not defined" message. 2. Fixed several issues with incorrect Prestige value change when swapping weapons. 3. Added a button that allows to compate an item in inventory to the item that is currently equipped. 4. Shieldbreaker pendant, Red stone ring and Vitality rune now properly work on squad members. 5. Fixed an issue with incorrect ransom price when imprisoned by the French. 6. Fixed an issue that resulted in squad members attacking a dead enemy if that enemy was previously selected as their target. 7. Fixed an issue that resulted in some of the squad orders abruptly ending the current music track and starting a new one. 8. Added several new quests and events to Maidstone that are available through tavern. 9. Fair maiden's portrait has been reworked - its use conditions are now less harsh and it will also provide a unique bonus effect that depends on the girl that you have a maxed out relationship with. 10. Shieldbreaker pendant's bonus shield damage has been increased to 20. 11. Fixed a couple of other minor issues and errors. I will continue to work on fixing the bugs. If you encounter any - please let me know in the Steam community section or on our Discord. Thank you all for playing and sorry if your experience has been negatively affected by the technical issues. Cheers! 1917 Studios
Hello guys! I'm happy to inform you that the game has been updated to the version 1.5i. Changelog: 1. Fixed several errors with orders during Maidstone's blacksmith questline. 2. Squad members now can be swapped with empty slots in the squad management window. 3. Fixed several incorrect interactions between fencing dagger and high-cover armor which resulted in fencing dagger not providing its bonus to the armor bypass chance. 4. Weapons and items in the manual character creation menu that are locked behind certain quests and boss challenges can now be unlocked on any difficulty level and not just on HWR. 5. Untreated injuries will no longer turn permanent and unhealable after some time - instead they will remain until the player treats them and, upon being treated, will return back all the deducted stats. However, several times during each chapter, at random points, untreated injuries will let themselves be known by triggering an event which will permanently deduct a tiny amount of stats from the player for each injury that he has. On top of that, each injury will block a corresponding training type, preventing the player from gaining new stats until the injury is removed. 6. Fixed a bug during a scavenge event that caused giving a poisoned man an antidote to yield no result. 7. Fixed an issue with player being able to receive maim injury multiple times in combat. 8. Fixed a couple of other minor issues and errors. I will continue to work on fixing the bugs. If you encounter any - please let me know in the Steam community section or on our Discord. Thank you all for playing and sorry if your experience has been negatively affected by the technical issues. Cheers! 1917 Studios
Hello guys! I'm happy to inform you that the game has been updated to the version 1.5h which should fix a bunch of existing issues, glitches and critical errors. Changelog: 1. Fixed a bug with Leon from Lyon infinitely respawning after being killed. 2. Fixed another issue that sometimes caused the defense of Rennes to fail despite city's strength being equal to or massively surpassing mercenaries' strength (note: the capture of at least one farm is still required for a successful defense). 3. Added some more technical changes to the blacksmith questline in Maidstone in order to fix another instance of infinite loops that some players have been reporting. 4. Fixed a series of bugs that happened after the player would give a rotation of retreat order while not having enough stamina to do that. The order would be denied but the player would then be sometimes possible to take several turns in a row with all the other characters skipping theirs. 5. Fixed a bug that caused the catacombs effect during the assault on Windsor in Duncan's storyline to not correctly apply. 6. Added a bunch of other minor corrections. I will continue to work on fixing the bugs. If you encounter any - please let me know in the Steam community section or on our Discord. Thank you all for playing and sorry if your experience has been negatively affected by the technical issues. Cheers! 1917 Studios

Reworked some of the requests in Maidsotne's blacksmith questline in order to make them easier to complete (requires campaign restart to take effect). 4. Handing over a full or two-thirds full bottle of poison to sergeant while completing his Drunkard quest would result in him giving some of it back to you. 5. Fixed Shamshir's incorrect attack icon. 6. Fixed an issue with "no weapon selected" error message that sometimes popped up after giving an ally a Zweihander. 7. Reworked scabbards: lowered their stat debuffs, rescaled weapon draw stamina cost (requires campaign restart to take effect). 8. Added a message that informs the player what stats does he lack to install a mechanical drum. 9. Fixed a bug with "Proceed" button sometimes appearing during the Prepare for Battle phase. 10. Fixed an issue with poison resist effect sometimes not disappearing after the player took off plague doctor's mask. I will continue to work on fixing the bugs. If you encounter any - please let me know in the Steam community section or on our Discord. Hello guys! I'm happy to inform you that the game has been updated to the version 1.5e which should fix a bunch of existing issues, glitches and critical errors. Changelog: 1. Fixed halberd's Leg Sweep attack having incorrect hit chance visualization. 3. Fixed an issue with Ruffin's fight in one of the new storylines not granting the achievement and not removing the quest to find him. 7. Fixed a cirtical error with infinite loop occurring in Maidstone if the player attempts to pick up another craftsman/blacksmith/alchemist task while already having too many pending ones. 9. That patch will be avilable for free for all the players.
New stuff in Patch 1.5:
1. Added new difficulty modifier - Prestige mode - that adds weapon durability mechanic, increases the lethality of the combat, lowers the time in chapters and generally makes the game even more hardcore. 2. Added civic talents - a variety of passive abilities that give the character various out-of-battle bonuses. 3. Added hydration mechanic in Outremer. Consuming water in that chapter will now temporarily protect you from the heat fatigue gain. 4. Added Damietta bazaar with a variety of different shops that contain all kinds of items. 5. Added 9 new trinkets including one that counters heat fatigue gain under certain conditions. 6. Survival mode now has a shop where the player can buy and sell items in between rounds. 7. Added keyboard support for in-battle controls. 8. Added quick action buttons to some of the item interaction menus (equipping and unequipping items, selling items and moving items between chest and inventory can be now done with one mouse click). 9. Added trinket presets menu that will allow the player to save several trinket combinations and them quickly swap between them. 10. Added different colors to characters' names in dialogues. 11. Added a couple of new scavenge events. Balance changes: 1. Healing injuries will now return only a percentage of the lost characteristics instead of fully restoring them. In Prestige mode you will receive back 50% of the points, on HWR and Hard difficulties - 75%, on Normal and Story difficulties - 100%. 2. Punishments for leaving an injuries untreated have been increased. 3. Mechanical crossbow has been reworked. Operating the crossbow will now require a certain amount of points in craftsmanship and crossbow skill. Repairing and unjamming the drum will now require specific items. Shooting in automatic modes will now generate a recoil that will decrease the accuracy (but is in turn decreased by strength). Mechanical crossbow's price in manual character creation mode has been increased. 4. Crafting now consumes a tiny bit of time. 5. Item prices have been rebalanced and are overall more expensive now. Fixes and minor additions: 1. Field surgery kit will now count as a medical item in Hadley. 2. Beibars will not be able to retreat with a broken leg. 3. Hello guys!
We are happy to finally make an official announcement of Heads Will Roll: Reforged's second DLC Not a Hero. It is scheduled to release on May 31st and together with accompanying major patch will bring along a huge amount of new content as well as usher in a considerable overhaul of the game's various systems and mechanics.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2850080/Heads_Will_Roll_Reforged/
So, what to expect?
1. New story content
First of all, the DLC will introduce several new full story branches that will allow the player to take their character's life and career in various alternative directions after the ending of the Cambrai campaign. You will encounter many new friends and foes, go on new adventures, survive new challenges and, of course, face new tough moral choices.
2. Squad system rework Then there is a much-awaited squad system rework which includes lots of new visual models, free customization of squadmates' war gear and expanded in-battle controls with all of that ultimately allowing to perfectly tailor your allies equipment and behavior to suit your desired playstyle.
3. Civil talents Heads Will Roll's RPG elements are too going to get an expansion in the form of civil talents various non-combat skills and abilities that will allow the player to make their character even more unique. The update will introduce about two dozens of civil talents of ranging magnitude with some of them acting like small pleasant bonuses while others being character-defining traits enabling for a whole playstyle to be built around.
4. Prestige mode In order to freshen up the game experience for the seasoned veterans we will be introducing a Prestige mode a difficulty modifier that will considerably harden the game: weapons will now also lose durability and eventually break, combat will be much more fast and deadly, injuries - more frequent, time - less plentiful and some of the skill checks - way tougher. Completing the game in this mode will undoubtedly prove to be the toughest challenge yet and will require the player to truly value the character's life. 5. Trinket presets Considering the major importance of trinkets it is only natural for the player to be in need of oftenly replacing them, swapping around crafting, scavenging, combat and other sets. The upcoming update will finally address this by introducing trinket presets feature that allows to save several desired trinket combinations and then quickly swap between them, removing a lot of unnecessary actions. Together with that, there are also going to be dedicated buttons for instantly unequipping all the trinkets and placing them into inventory or chest.
6. Interface improvements Another issue that the upcoming update will be addressing is the cumbersomeness of many of the game's item interaction menus. In order to fix this, the update will be adding quick action buttons allowing to move items between chest and inventory, as well as acquire items from loot in one click. 7. New gameplay balance The overall gameplay balance is too going to get a shakeup buy and sell prices, skill check thresholds, time limits in chapters, item parameters and various other things are going to be updated to freshen up the game and correct some of the existing balancing issues. 8. Bugfixes And, of course, last but not least bugfixing. The patch accompanying the DLC will contain a long list of fixes for many of the reported bugs (a detailed list will be provided with the release notes). As you can see, the scope of the upcoming update is going to be absolutely massive with pretty much all of the game's aspects getting expansions, improvements and overhauls. We are very much looking forward to release and hope that you are too! For more information on all things Heads Will Roll or to get in touch with us head over to our Discord. Stay tuned! 1917 Studios

The next big update to the game will include a rework of the squad mechanics as well as new visual models for the allies (that will properly depict their class and experience level). Together with that we are also hoping to include in the update an entirely new storyline that will span across several new chapters and take the player on a bunch of new adventures. An official announcement should be coming rather soon so stay tuned!

Patch 1.08 is live!
This is a smaller patch that is intended to fix a bunch of lesser technical issues. Changelog 1. Fixed an issue with player's squad members being able to reload and use crossbows without actually having one in their equipment. 2. Added an automatic crossbow reload in between battles for those player's squad members who have crossbows. 3. Fixed a series of bugs related to armor crafting, including a rare occurance when crafting a new armor piece made it replace the one that you had on right now (same thing with helmets). 4. Reworked Olifant - now it recovers 100% of stamina for the user and his allies instead of a fixed value. 5. Fixed a bunch of various localization issues and several smaller bugs\incorrect interactions. As you might have noticed this time the changelog is rather small and this is because we're already working on the new content update which should be coming very soon. We are not ready to announce a date yet but if everything goes well you might in for some very pleasant surprise. Our next stop after that will be the much anticipated squad members rework that will introduce: -new visual models for the squad members that reflect the character's class and level; -new in-battle control mechanics that will allow the player to have more control over the ally's behavior in combat; -new interactions with allies' equipment, allowing the player to give an ally specific weapons\gear to use. Greetings, dear players!! We hope that you enjoyed the highest difficulty level, which literally is titled "Heads Will Roll". This roguelike mode is definitely the most important part of the whole game, so if you haven't tried it yet, you should definitely give it a try. You're in for a real challenge, where each enemy death will boost your game profile level depending on how far you've progressed. Each level gives you additional character creation points, which means you'll be able to create a stronger character and try to survive again. So if you liked this particular aspect of the game, we humbly ask you to support us in the "Best Game You Suck At" nomination - This is the game that rewards persistence, and is not for the faint of heart. It's the toughest game we've ever loved. Thank you! Our Discord: https://discord.gg/xndPrtZMeT 1917 Studios

Hello everyone! We're incredibly happy to announce that Heads Will Roll: Reforged has now officially been released. We have been working on the project for an unbelieveably long time and poured all of our heart and soul into it. The original HWR had a very unique vision behind it, a vision that for a variety of reasons we were not able to fully accomplish at the time. Reforged is everything that we envisioned the original HWR to be. Hopefully you will enjoy playing this game just as much as we've enjoyed making it. Greetings Veterans, As you know, our main focus for Heads Will Roll Reforged is to create a game that is worthy of being a true reimagining of the original. While we're nearly there, we've come to realize that we need to spend more time on tweaks, changes and updates, as well as distance ourselves from the release of Baldur's Gate 3. To ensure that everyone has the best possible experience, we have decided to postpone the launch, so that all preparations can be made and a release can be planned across multiple platforms. A definitive release date for the game has been set - October 4, 2023. Featuring more than 40 hours of gameplay on each playthrough, and no two playthroughs ever the same, with new features and new characters, it will definitely be worth the wait! Thank you very much for your patience! It will certainly be worth the wait, and we are excited to present you with the finest version of the game we could produce very soon!

Hello guys! I wanted to do a quick announcement in case some of you missed our latest news. Heads Will Roll: Downfall a free-to-play prologue for HWR: Reforged is already out and you can play it right now! https://store.steampowered.com/app/1903060/Heads_Will_Roll_Downfall/ At the moment we're working on a big patch for the game that is going to add a bunch of QoL features and also do a major balance shift. You can read more about the upcoming patch here: https://steamcommunity.com/games/1903060/announcements/detail/3409813763404182281 And last but not least we wanted to announce that we're lauching a Boosty page (an equivalent of Patreon since Patreon doesn't work with Russian citizens) where anyone (from any country), who has a desire to do so, can offer us some financial support for a bunch of rewards. This is strictly voluntarily so please don't feel pressured to do so. But, if you want to show your appreciation or to support the ongoing development of HWR: Reforged you're welcome to do so. Here's the link: https://boosty.to/1917studios But, let me be maximum clear, HWR: Reforged will be properly finished and released no matter how successful or unsuccessful this Boosty campaign will turn out to be. Hello everyone! The time has come! We are super excited to announce that Heads Will Roll: Downfall is now available on Steam! https://store.steampowered.com/app/1903060/Heads_Will_Roll_Downfall/ The team has been working hard on the game, eagerly awaiting today's release! We want to share our sincere gratitude for supporting the game and being part of the community! We have poured our soul and heart into the game, and hope you will enjoy it! First of all, let's check out the launch trailer: [previewyoutube=q1bpwhkTmpo;full][/previewyoutube] Let's talk a bit about game content and our plans going forward. [Game Content] Even though it's only a prologue, the small part of the whole story, we wanted this to be something you could play over and over again. That is what we feel we have achieved, 100%. The game has three difficulty levels: Easy, Normal, and Heads Will Roll. We recommend choosing "Heads Will Roll" difficulty for the most authentic experience. Think of it as "New Game Plus", each death will increase your in-game profile depending on how far you have progressed. As you progress through the levels, you gain more character generation points, which enables you to create stronger characters and try to survive again. Good luck! [Communication and QoL Improvements] After the game is released, we will continue to communicate with you to get feedback on the game and will continue to make improvements! All bugs will be fixed, balance issues will be investigated, and most importantly--we will evaluate all feedback on quality-of-life issues to make gradual improvements. So, please join our Discord to chat with us about the game.

Hello.
In this blogpost we'd like to share some news about weapons and combat system of both HWR: Reforged and HWR: Downfall.
In our opinion, the original Heads Will Roll both had a pretty respectable arsenal of weapons and did a decent job highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of different weapon types. In Reforged and Downfall we decided to expand the overall arsenal while, at the same time, increasing and preserving the uniqueness of each weapon.
At this point in development there're 56 different melee weapons in the game including several ones that fall into completely new categories like 'curved swords' and 'throwing spears' that were not present in the original game. Both of these are an interesting addition mainly because they allow us to introduce new attacks and mechanics that, in turn, enable the player to create more unique playstyles.
So, for example, curved swords have a new attack that increases the damage dealt to target by a portion of attacker's agility, but only if the blow lands clean (i.e. not fully or partially blocked by armor). What this means is that now there's a weapon, damage output of which scales with agility rather than only weapons skill or strength. Coupled with the addition of all kinds of new trinkets this allows for completely new playstyles that do not rely on brute force or heavy weapons for high damage output but rather on agility and precision.
The introduction of throwing spears and javelins too aims at diversifying the approaches to combat that are available to the player. The 'Spear Throw' attack makes use of both agility (to hit the target) and strength (for damage modifier) for an absolutely devastating effect. Even at the start of the game, with a relatively weak character, this attack is capable of doing damage in the realm of high 20s and one-shotting shields. And since all throwing spears have at least one melee attack, your options with them are never limited to just throwing so you can hold your own in melee combat. Thus you can both throw your spear at the beginning of the battle and then instantly switch to the second weapon. Or wait until there's an opportune moment or a proper target and then throw it.
Another thing we did was buffing the one-handed longswords. In the original game they were widely considered to be one of the worst weapon types. And this, by itself, is not a very bad thing as, contrary to the popular belief, in the real medieval combat the longswords were never considered to be that amazing of a weapon. Depending on the situation, a poleaxe, a spear, a mace, a flail or an axe would pretty much always be a better option that a sword, while circumstances where a longsword would be better than any of the above were very rare.
But, at the same time, longswords were indeed used very widely and were by all means an iconic weapon of that era. Thus, searching for a way to buff them in the game, we came up with an idea of another attack a fencing move. Dubbed 'Counter Strike' this attack increases the hit chance if the target has missed their previous attack or has a 'feinted' debuff applied to them. The idea should be pretty obvious: deceive your enemy with feints, make them miss make them pay. Obviously, this playstyle too can hugely benefit from a variety of new trinkets that can improve your feinting skills, dmage output, chance to inflict a bleeding or an injury or break enemy's armor.
On top of that a lot of weapons (both old and new) received unique attack effects: rusty swords and axes can inflict a small poisoning; messers, gross-messers and curved swords have a higher chance to inflict bleedings etc.
And even that's not entirely it as there're actually two more new attacks - Helmbreaker (for Horseman's axe) and Coup de Grace (for several swords). But in the interest of time we'll leave them for another occasion.
If you liked the news then rejoice as Downfall is just a couple of months away. And, hopefully, it will not disappoint you.

Hello. As was promised, today I'm bringing you another blogpost with more information about new features that will be introduced in Reforged and Downfall. This time we will discuss armor. First of all, let's talk numbers. The overall amount of available armor items has been increased dramatically. At this point the work-in-progress build of the game has 21 body armors, 21 helmets, 20 gorgets\bracers\greaves and several helmet attachments. This is a considerable improvement over the original game and this number is very likely to increase even more as the work is not yet done. Having this many types of defensive equipment will allow the player to deeply customize his character's loadout in order to suit the chosen playstyle or address any particular issue.
New slots
This is also helped by the fact that there will be 3 new equipment slots for gorgets (neck armor), bracers and greaves (limbs armor). Thus, even at the earlier stages of the game, the player can obtain a very respectable level of protection. But most of the armor, obviously, comes with various debuffs so it will always be a trade-off between better protection or better combat stats.
Prestige
New equipment slots and new armor pieces are also going to have more significance due to the introduction of the Prestige mechanic. The better equipment you've got on - the higher is your Prestige. This, in turn, means better chance to impress people and command their respect. So, if you find yourself doing some diplomatic mission or seeking to make an impression on a noble lady it may be wise to put aside your trusty but worn chainmail and suit up with something fancier (even if you're not intending to use it on a battlefield).
Combat mechanics
When it comes to combat mechanics there's news too. Limbs armor is now a fully separate value; all armor items can now receive separate damage to diffetent armor zones (so, for example, a body armor with limbs protection after absorbing blows to the limbs can lose several points of 'limbs armor' value while 'torso armor' value will remain as it was). The same applies to allies and enemies whose equipment too can take damage to a particular zone.
Manual armor repair
During repair the item can lose some stats as well. For example, armor, cover and prestige values will lower when the player attempts to manually repair the item while not being that skilled at craftsmanship. Obviously, the more you level the skill - the fewer stat losses your items will take. Same thing will happen if the player does cheap partial repair through blacksmith. Full repair, on the other hand, might cost a lot higher but will return your item back with pristine stats.
Armor crafting
And now for the most interesting part armor crafting and custom armor. Yes, both Downfall and Reforged will have armor crafting: player will be able to combine different armor items in order to get an item with higher stats. Unlike consumable crafting system, armor crafting WILL NOT be giving you a predetermined item with a prethough list of parameters but rather will produce you a completely new item with dynamic stats. This means that combining two damaged or two pristine items will not give you the same result. The outcome will also be influenced by your craftsmanship skill. The higher it is the more bonuses the item will receive (i.e. more armor, more cover, higher sell price, more prestige, fewer debuffs etc.).
Same goes for the head armor items. Some of helmets too will be able to be combined with each other (bascinet + mail coif, for example) or will take on attachments, like visor or face protection chops.
The player won't, of course, be able to combine ANY items heavy armor (plate mails, full helmets etc.) is not going to be usable in crafting. The crafting system will remain more reasonable and revolve around combining things like a padded jacket and a chainmail or a chainmail and a cuirass or a demi-cuirass and a plackart etc. So these are the main points when it comes to the new armor system. It took a lot of work to implement and I really hope that it will be a lot of fun for you to use. In the next blogposts I'm going to do similar overviews for weapons, trinkets, ally-related mechanics and other stuff so stay tuned for more news.
