Meowdy, fellow pilots! Version 0.72.1 is live, and weve made some substantial changes to map progression and balancing while also finding time to add some additional items.
Map Updates
Lets start from the top. We got a lot of feedback asking for more substantial options along the map pathways. Our amazing mechanic Petey has now added a significant number of additions to his shop. Now, when you visit one of his nodes you can have some of these options appear;
- Max upgrade: either an item you currently own or a random unowned one
- Max upgrade your Primary or Secondary Weapon
- Unlock revive or rerolls for your current run
- Unlock a new Primary Weapon
New Weapons
After maxing out your Primary Weapon level in a run, the next time you meet Petey, hell offer one of 3 new weapons. You can also level these up even further during a run!
Cursed Choices
We know that when Cursed Choices came out, we got a lot of mixed feedback, but it was clear that changes were needed. We continued to tweak and work on them update after update, listening to feedback along the way. With this update, we are excited to announce another change to help Cursed Choices feel significantly more exciting.
Now, each curse lasts a set number of rounds and offers a new item in exchange for picking them that last for the duration of your run. These items range from powerful augments to items that the Swarm can drop when defeated.

NEW FEATURES/CONTENT:
- Campaign mode! We have redesigned the overall experience of the game to include a campaign that includes a map with a choice of paths. Rather than choosing your level at the start, a campaign has a map that includes a random selection of worlds along your journey.

This redesign includes major new features including:
- 2 shops with new characters you can visit for upgrades.

- Spinning while turning will give you a little boost in your turn direction. As a treat.
- Added support for 3 save slots.
- Ross and Max are now unlocked as part of the story.
- There's now a countdown meter underneath the combo indicator.
- Shortened intro animation for every Action Zone except the first in each act.
- New intro cutscene.
CHANGES/IMPROVEMENTS:

- Combos now unlock on run 3 with a standalone tutorial.
- Redesigned UI for hangar.
- Camera is a bit higher relative to ship so it's easier to see targets in front of ship.

- Enemy homing missiles now have a chance to drop a missile pickup when destroyed.
- Improved enemy outlines and enhanced enemy visibility.
- Enemies and enemy attacks are more visible and are a bit more difficult.
- "Enhanced" enemies will appear with a special material, with more health.

- Redesigned main menu.
- Black holes, fog, and meteors are now environmental effects that appear on specific nodes on the map.
- Redesigned some Cursed Choices.
- Reduced Burst Blaster initial damage from 3 to 2 per pellet.
- Adjusted achievements to be unlockable with new campaign mode.

Today were excited to announce the introduction of a new Campaign mode for Whisker Squadron: Survivor, launching on June 19th. This is the most significant update to the game so far, and touches basically every aspect of the games design. Im going to give an overview of whats changed and why, and talk a bit about whats next.
Campaign Mode Overview
Ever since the games launch in Early Access last August, theres been one throughline in the feedback weve seen: You all like whats here, but want *more*. More variety in the environments, more choices, more enemies. So first and foremost, were combining the existing level content into one unified campaign. This campaign spans (currently) 3 acts, each consisting of a generated map like the one below:
This map contains Action Zones as well as upgrade shops, story moments, and cursed choices. Each act ends with an epic miniboss fight. Act 1 takes place in Nexus Station. Act 2 is the area formerly called Neonfall (more on that later!), and Act 3 is in Translink City. Additionally, each of these areas has a *lot* more variety within it.
The Game Has A Story Now!
Weve been busy writing the underpinnings of a story for the Whisker Squadron universe, and its finally represented in the game with this update. Youll learn about the origin story for Whisker Squadron, Olivia, and the other characters. This is still an action game at heart, but this update will give some context to why youre fighting these bugs, and the corporation (A.R.E.S) that created them.
Other Major Features and Changes
Weve made a myriad of other gameplay changes both large and small with this update - heres an overview of the biggest ones:
Cursed Choices
Cursed choices were previously a mandatory feature that happened when you leveled up 10 times. We heard your feedback on this design loud and clear! In this update, Cursed Choices are an optional node on the map. Additionally were in the process of redesigning these to feel more rewarding. These should feel like an interesting push your luck choice, and not a punishment.
New Enemies
Weve nearly doubled the number of enemies in the game with this update. Each act features its own unique enemies, adding a lot of new gameplay variety that will take you awhile to master!
Blocking As A Default Mechanic
In the current version of the game, its possible to tilt your ship (which makes you turn a bit faster), and a double-tap of the tilt button actives a spin, which by default does nothing. With this update, weve replaced the ability to tilt your ship with a built in spin-block, which activates with a single click. This might take a bit of getting used to, but its allowed us to design a much more interesting and varied set of enemy mechanics, and we feel makes the games controls more accessible and intuitive.
Other Changes
We've also redesigned the main menu and hangar screens to help support this campaign change, and made a myriad of other quality of life changes, which we'll list in full on the June 19th release.

Hey friends, the team has been working super hard on a major new content update!
One of the most requested features for this series is boss fights.
We have some BIG plans for end stage bosses coming soon, but in the meantime, we decided to redesign the "Elite" enemies in the game and turn them into epic miniboss fights.
Here's how it works:
There are (currently) 4 possible elites that will spawn in zone 5. They are the only thing in that zone, and we've done our best to make it feel really cinematic.
There's even a mysterious "The Swarm" character speaking through them. What is it saying??
We'll be refining this system in the coming months and adding additional Elites.
Additionally, we've added a new secondary weapon called Precision Rocket Launcher.

We've been hard at work over here at Flippfly, preparing a major new update that includes a new way to play, new items, and a redesign of the ship stats system.
Your feedback has been essential in shaping the direction of the game, so please keep it coming!
This update introduces "Challenges", a new screen with short pass/fail challenges that will test your skills in various ways.
We've also begun a major redesign of the stats and items in the game. The two upgradable ships each have a unique attribute now, and we've added some new items, and redesigned the "stats" upgrades to be random items. Are you a streamer gripped by indecision, second-guessing every upgrade as viewers wait in anticipation? Let them make the hard choices for you with Twitch integration. Just sit back, let your audience pick your mid-run upgrades, and deal with the (surely unintentional) catastrophic consequences. And, the decisions are getting even harder with the introduction of Cursed Choices. Blended into the mid-run upgrades, every Cursed Choice will give you an edge over the Swarm. But, at what cost? Some of the Cursed Choices awaiting include:
- Galactic Gamble: Summon black holes that attract and kill everything nearby, including you.
- Rush or Die: Kick your boosters into overdrive for two zones, but die if you let off the throttle.
- Chaotic Compass: Restore your hull, if you can last two minutes with inverted controls.
- Glass Cannon Party: For two minutes, everything dies in a single hit. EVERYTHING.
- Introducing Cursed Choices! Every 10 levels, you'll be offered one or more Cursed Choices. Each cursed choice has an upside and a downside. Dense fog that also heals you? Check. Black holes that suck you in but also kill enemies? Check. More to come, please let us know what you think!
- New item: Tight Boost Assassin. Doing tight boosts insta-kills random enemies.
- Twitch Integration. Activate from options screen and let Twitch viewers vote on upgrades!
- Added tutorial popups for tight boosts and barrel rolls.
- Unlocks on the loadout screen now show progress.
- Gatling gun balance tweak: Energy recharges slower when weapon is in a charging state. Charge level resets to zero faster.
- Pulse Laser balance: Energy stops refilling while weapon is charging up.
- Fixed bug where level-up screen was obscured if it happened during elite explosions or level transitions.
- Fixed bug where character dialogs would pop up at inappropriate times.
- Fixed bug where level up screen would occasionally not show all items.
- Fixed low quality rendering glitches.
Check out what's new!

Hey all, first of all, we just want to say THANK YOU for an incredible launch. The team of 9 over here at Flippfly couldn't be more excited to be working on this game! We've been reading all of your reviews, your feedback surveys (hundreds of them!) discussion forum comments, Discord chats, and watching your videos and livestreams. We are seeing a few clear patterns in feedback: 1. You like what's here and you're looking forward to more content and variety in the game. 2. We've got some balance issues with weapons and items to work on. 3. We've got quite a few bugs and quality-of-life issues to work on too. Here's What's Next We are planning to release new builds every two weeks for now. This upcoming first patch (Dropping around Sep 13) will primarily deal with quality-of-life issues, bugs, and item balance. We're making the Pulse Laser pack more punch, balancing out the Gatling gun a bit, fixing all the achievement and Mod bugs, and making mods give more VP. We're also fixing about two dozen bugs, and making the color scheme in Nexus City a bit more readable and easy on the eyes. For the second update, our artist Jin and programmer/designer Dayne are in the home stretch on a new world. We're also working on "twitch plays" integration so Twitch viewers can pick upgrades, and even more quality-of-life updates. Beyond that, we're looking into ways to add more variety and surprise to the core game loop - exciting new items and choices that can change your run in fundamental ways. And of course, there will be more ships, pilots, and weapons! We're also looking into the possibility of mod support, and even investigating VO for characters. No promises, though! Keep the feedback coming, and thanks again for your support! What are the "dream features" you'd love to see in this game?

We've added a new hidden "Portal world" system. See if you can find them!
The Swarm won't know what hit them! We've added three new passive attacks that will give you an edge in your battle for survival:
- Missile Done: Who needs precision when you can rain down missiles on your enemies? With this new passive, you can fire a missile every few seconds and watch as they rain down on your targets.
- Laser Drone: Take down your enemies without breaking a sweat with this new passive. It fires a laser at a nearby enemy for every few shots you take. It's like having your own personal drone army!
- Pulse Wave: When things get tough, it's time to bring out the big guns. This new passive unleashes a massive expanding wave that emanates from your ship every few seconds, obliterating anything in its path.
The Upgrades screen has also been given a facelift. It's now easier to navigate and see all the passive attacks and upgrades available to you.
Get ready to show the Swarm who's boss with these new passives! As always, the Flippfly team would love to hear your feedback and suggestions for future updates. Keep up the fight, pilots!
