Module-based Drone

Build your drone to collect all debris

Resource management & extraction

There is always a decision to make, “Should I craft A or B?, If A I could do ..., but if B I could...”

Extract resources & data fragments; Craft modules.

Dynamic free flowing Story

Every debris tells a piece of the story, every action you take influences the orbit. Take wise actions to save you, your station and mars.

You are free to do what you like, just live with the results. Debris’ story adapts to your play instead of the other way around.

YOU decide if you do a task or not, maybe not abiding the protocols can work too?

Context

It’s 2060 and humanity has arrived at Mars. Many satellites have been left recklessly behind still in orbit.

Now catastrophe strikes, Kesslers Syndrome has been invoked – like a nuclear explosion shards of satellites crash into other satellites creating more shards.
It’s a vicious cycle, that can only be stopped if you take the fuel away.

Something must have caused the collapse, maybe some satellites have some records?

A new beginning

Merry Christmas!

Hey guys, as part of getting the game ready for the full release I revised the introduction because that was still causing big headaches for too many people.\n\nThis time though I changed the entry point into the story and it\'s flow order and dialogs, the side-panel gets more usage as well. This should make it easy for new players to understand what is going on, also in terms of what is happening in the story-line, while allowing to ignore these messages when re-playing.

Apart from a mostly new, rewritten start into the game there are still some tweaks and fixes:

• Improvements for Editor
• Module placement gets checked, you need to use compatible connectors between modules

[/*]
• While in Editor you can now rotate the camera, for removing modules you now need to long-press the right mouse button

[/*]
[/*]
• Camera stays as you left it when switching between drone and station

[/*]
• Resources and extraction/junking times have been balanced

• meteor debris now contains [c]CER[/c] instead of [c]MTL[/c]

[/*]
• satellites now contain more [c]MTL[/c] instead of [c]CER[/c]

[/*]
[/*]
• Various fixes for cut-scenes

[/*]
• improved readability of side-panel

[/*]
•
As always behind the scenes I\'m working on getting content into the game for the full release in Feburary!\n

Enjoy the winter time and take care!

Long time no see

It\'s been a while, sorry to keep you waiting, but I just felt \"let\'s do this as well\" every time\n\nAlso in the background I\'m working hard on implementing the full story and it\'s refinement.\nThis requires a lot of time and involves more creative tasks, which are also kinda a new thing for me.\n\nAnyways this update contains many quality of life improvements like skipping dialogs and bug fixes.

Irrelevant to you, but under the hood I fixed many technical bugs, and improved systems that enable the game to work as it should.

F..F..F...Feedback

So guys it\'s been a while, but it took some time to fix many bugs, together with your help.\nYou found them and took the time to point them out, now I know that we\'re nowhere close to having no bugs at all, but the nastiest are now addressed.\n

Apparent fixes:

• BigScreen, manual and the intermediate events should now like each other, before there were many instances where the game would be left frozen/in a paused state, with no way to recover.\nAgain I\'m sorry for those bugs, that shouldn\'t have happened.

[/*]
• Switches on the panel, because of an invisible element the first switch was very hard to hit, which meant that you were all doomed to suffocate. Sorry for all the very time-limited runs.

[/*]
• Solarpanel now produces energy, as expected, this bug was because of a new way of handling resource requests from the last update.

[/*]
• Station Stores now increase the capacity, this was also caused by the last update.

[/*]
• A bit of balancing, the amount of POW required and produced, as well as the amount of resources are now tweaked hope you like it, should make your life a bit easier.

[/*]

Apart from fixes there are couple of small additions:

• Pulsing lights, instead of static lights for all modules that can be active/inactive, the resource extractor for example.\nThis idea came from one of you, so thank you for sharing your ideas!

[/*]
• Partially a fix; The introduction has now been revised and additional explanations for all the elements have been added. This also sort of explains a bit how the game works to get you started.\nIt\'s these smaller things that make or break the experience, so let me know if this helps, or how to improve.

[/*]

Next up:

• I will use a bigger chunk of my time to build up the content for the release.\nThis includes story, which will also involve some changes to the part you can already play.\nAs well as a slight shift in general.

[/*]

Plans:

• New/Better music, as I love doing that also it was requested, and makes sense in the revised concept.

[/*]

Drilling, Gigantic Debris and lights in the dark

This update took a bit longer, but I\'m sure you understand why.

\nWe have new module types, Lights and drillers. For the times when the sun isn\'t shining, you can now still see things, if you are ok with a little power consumption.

As you fly through the fields, you\'ll recognize the new gigantic debris, and you\'ll need a driller to break them down into smaller chunks and be able to grab them. The driller is also handy for other debris that is too large.

The camera is now dynamic, I got bored of the static view, I hope you like it!

This update contains:

• New Lighter Module

[/*]
• New Driller Module, to drill larger debris down into smaller debris to be able to pick it up even with just a small grabber

[/*]
• New Gigantic debris, which needs to be drilled before you can pick it up

[/*]
• Many fixes regarding gameplay and playing experience
• Reduced Text before initial Gameplay

[/*]
• Camera will now return to default position much slower

[/*]
• Camera is now responding to acceleration and velocity, which improves the sense of speed

[/*]
• Hud-Modules now show a focus outline, to know which module is targeted with keyboard shortcuts

[/*]
[/*]
• Behind the scenes preparation for the release

[/*]
•
Next up:

• Improvements to performance

[/*]
• Dust and sound effect for the driller mechanic

[/*]
• Non-\"exploding\" debris when grabbing it

[/*]
• Further improvements to the onboarding/tutorial

[/*]
• More content for the full release (mainly story)

[/*]

Let's all be CALM, play games and prevent suicide

Besides the regular update schedule, this time debris is part of Games Against Living Miserably CALM\'s event on Steam.

I think games can and should be more than just a way to kill time, so I decided to join CALM on their mission to reduce suicide rates.

As for the update:

• New Upgrade system, to allow upgrading aspects of the drone, regardless of its modules.

[/*]
• Cut-Scenes now wait for you instead of just going along at their pace.
• The dialogs have been revised to give a bit more clarity, albeit a little less realistic.

[/*]
[/*]
• There is now a dynamic tutorial for flying and grabbing with the drone.

[/*]
• The tutorial for using Station\'s HUD has been improved by darkening unimportant HUD-modules.

[/*]
• Settings can now be accessed from within the game, using the current view as a preview for graphic settings.

• Music volume can now be changed in the settings

[/*]
• Fixed a bug that enabled music when opening the settings

[/*]
[/*]
• Missons are now clearer labeled

[/*]
•
Manual Expansion & UX improvements

This is more of a hot-fix-collection than anything else.

The anticipated update to come is already in the making

More precisely: there were (as expected) many problems with the story system, all of which should now be fixed.

The manual was extended by 4 new pages that explain the interface-elements.

I also fixed/tweaked many other small things to make for a nicer expierience.

Settings and performance

As promised in the last update, there is now a settings menu. You can access it via the mainmenu.

It comes with live preview and a fps counter, to find the correct settings.\n(Currently there is just shadow quality, rendering scale and v-sync there).

If you like to get the ultimate 80s experience there is a preset for that with pixels large as pancakes.

Wenn du die Ultimative 80er Jahre Erfahrung haben mchtest, gibt es dafr auch eine Voreinstellung.

Changes include:

• Video and performance settings

[/*]
• some further performance improvements, also possible tweaking via the settings

[/*]
• improvements and tweaks for Modules and their required resources

[/*]

Next up:

• More graphic settings

[/*]
• Further performance improvements

[/*]
• improvements for drone movement

[/*]

In the background I will be creating more content for the full release, which means more modules, larger world and more story.

Demo Release

After some all-nighters the first public version of debris is now available!

There are still many things that need to be improved and many more ideas for more content but for now I am looking forward to your feedback.\n\nLimitations of the Demo version are:

• Progress cannot be saved

[/*]
• Total playtime is around 30 minutes to an hour

[/*]
• limited number of modules

[/*]
• limited story

[/*]

Thanks to all the people that already tried it, your feedback was very valuable and I am looking forward to getting your feedback in the future as well!

Changes compared to last time include:

• dust around areas of debris are now colored based on their resources (setup for future update)

[/*]
• thruster startup and shutdown animation

[/*]
• Improved onboarding and general explanation of the game

[/*]
• various UI fixes, for example disabled buttons, animations and sounds

[/*]
• various bugs with
• station editor

[/*]
• drone editor

[/*]
• story

[/*]
• BigScreen

[/*]
• Manual

have been found and fixed

[/*]
[/*]
Planned things to come:

• Automated bases, that can be deployed at various locations, that require your resource managing skills

[/*]
• Better visuals\nEspecially during the night, the objects should look more in line with the scene

[/*]
• Better Camera movement

[/*]
• Racing-inspired \"tuning-section\": your drone will always be there and you can tinker on it before taking a flight

In-Game Manual

As part of the better onboarding and better playing experience this update brings an in-game manual, currently just showing the 3-Letter-Codes and displaying the controls.

In the future the manual should also show and describe all the different modules for the drone and station.

already known issues:

• Editing the Station does not work correctly sometimes.

[/*]
• The Story might not work out, in that some events might soft-lock your progression, the events might not trigger correctly.

[/*]
• Sometimes collisions are not detected.

[/*]

[ 2025-07-23 11:39:37 CET ] [Original Post]
Better Onboarding

Because many players raised concerns about the (onboarding) experience for players that are not regular space-game players, for example regarding the 3-letter codes.\nNow instead of only showing the 3-letter code, when hovering over one there should be the full text displayed.

The onboarding story now explains a lot more details, reasons and terminology.

Some minor improvements include:

• Rewrite of all Story Events

[/*]
• The onboarding should now be more smooth and explain a lot more than previously

[/*]
• Revised Opening animation of BigScreen

[/*]
• Some fixes to the Story Events and system

[/*]
• updated Logo

[/*]

Known issues:

• Not all 3-letter codes may be explained at the moment

[/*]
• This new system may not work everywhere

[/*]

already known issues:

• Editing the Station does not work correctly sometimes.

Story and dangerous grabbing

This time Story Events have been added so you can enjoy the first few events of the story.

But watch out, Grabbing is now dangerous! You\'ll need to adapt your relative speed to the debris you want to pickup, otherwise the grabber gets damaged.

Some minor improvements include:

• Damage model revised, but still some problems are known.

[/*]
• Fixes for UI and small visual improvements/tweaks

[/*]
• The game pauses while displaying messages, to avoid creating unfair scenarios, where the drone would leave the signal radius

[/*]
• BigScreen handling was improved in some edge cases

[/*]

Known issues:

• Editing the Station does not work correctly sometimes.
