Were thrilled to announce the launch of the Marks System, a new way to play, learn, and progress in hackmud. Designed for players of all backgrounds and skill levels - including those whove never been introduced to computer science concepts - this system begins by teaching the essentials of hackmud and building a strong foundation so that anyone can dive into this incredible game.
Whats a Mark?
Marks are interactive challenges that begin by teaching players the basics of hackmud in a straightforward and slightly more guided way. They introduce key concepts and skills to help you navigate the game and solve problems - no prior knowledge needed. Heres a categorization preview for the connoisseur and the curious: - Required Marks: Critical knowledge and skills to get up and running in hackmud. - Suggested Marks: Commonly utilized scripts, concepts, and strategies that enhance your abilities. - Optional Marks: Deeper challenges for those seeking arcane knowledge and opportunities. - Hidden Marks: The secrets of hackmud, rewarding those who venture beyond the illuminated paths.
Why It Matters
The Marks System is a game-changer for new players. Its designed to help you feel at home in the game without overwhelming you. The goal is to teach you how to think and act in hackmud, not just complete rote tasks. As you explore and discover, youll build confidence and be ready to dive deeper into the game. For existing players, the Marks System will grow and expand over time to cover the deepest depths and highest challenges of hackmud. Right now, were focusing on bringing new players into the fold and helping them learn at their own pace. You will be able to see changes and developments in real-time; just consult your available marks.
What Does This Mean for hackmud?
We are officially replacing the vLAN with our brand-new and ever-growing Marks System. This way, all players - new and old - can expand their horizons and gain new skills. This marks the first major step toward aligning the game with our mission of empowering and inspiring people to learn more about systems literacy. The vLAN is also not gone forever. The story and lore of hackmud is an important part of the experience. Keep an eye out for updates! This is just the beginning, and we will continue to develop, improve, and expand this new experience with your help and feedback.
Whats Next?
The system is live, and we cant wait for you to get started. Heres how you can jump in:
New Players
- Create your first user and take your first steps into hackmud. - The challenges are designed to be fun, approachable, and require no prior experience.
Existing Players
- Start from where you already are, or create a new user to try a fresh Marks playthrough. - Maybe youll learn something new - or maybe we will
Invite a Friend
- Know someone who loves games, tech, or is looking for a way to break into the world of programming? Nows the perfect time to bring them in!
Support the Mission
- ComCODE thrives on community. If you believe in what were building, consider supporting us so we can continue growing and improving hackmud for everyone. We cant wait to see how you grow and what youll achieve. Catch you in the mud, ~ ComCODE #

- Added: Autoscroll is now disabled while copying - Added: Better error message for script names that are too long - Added: Discord Server and Wiki links added to the bootup text - Changed: Autoscroll is now disabled sooner when scrolling up - Changed: Better error messages for malformed script arguments - Fixed: On Linux, the audio output device was set to the first (not default!) device upon client launch - Fixed: Network conditions could cause commands to not finish properly and time out - Fixed: Script autocompletes were sometimes broken - Fixed: Could not autocomplete script arguments if another script exists with the name as a prefix - e.g. `accts.xfer_gc_to_caller` prevented `accts.xfer_gc_to` from autocompleting arguments - Typing a space after the name now allows you to complete the arguments - Fixed: On Windows, the client sometimes caused the taskbar to freeze - Fixed: Specially-crafted text could add color to autocompletes or produce italicized/bold text in the client - Updated Unity to 6000.0.27f1 Thank you to our ComCODE volunteers and staff for their contributions! `@ActualRemy @chirp @daniel @fayti1703 @flora @ghamb @john @jrush @kaikae @kb @marto @samual @seanmakesgames @spanospy @sudonym` !-#!^-+-%+#!--%%---##^!-!%+#&&!+#&&-%-&&-&!!+!^-^^!#-!!&^-^-+-^-!+!+!-^+!+-#-#--!%^&++%#+

- Added: `flush` command immediately flushes the shell to `shell.txt` (and other panels to their respective files)
- Fixed: keeping an editor launched by `#edit` open after closing hackmud made Steam think the game was still running
- Fixed: failures on the `user` screen had broken color codes
- Fixed: keystrokes were not processed when the window was unfocused
- Fixed: end-of-text control character broke text rendering
- Fixed: command aliases were not colored correctly
- Fixed: autocompleteing a macro parameter overwrote the macro
- Fixed: `/auto
Known Issues
These are some high priority known issues which we are still working to fix. We have provided workarounds below for people affected by them. - Wrapped text in the shell can have its rightmost character cropped by the scrollbar - As a workaround, moving the scrollbar by clicking and dragging in the area between the scrollbar and right-hand panels will shift the text. - On linux, audio device assignment is set to whatever the first (not default!) audio device is upon client launch - As a workaround, you may manually set the audio device assigned to the game in your mixer - Auto-scrolling upon receiving new script outputs and notifications triggers from too high up - If this is being caused by a disruptive chat channel, you can use `gui.chats {shell:false, chat:true}` to remove user chats from your main shell Thank you to our ComCODE volunteers! @danswann @Fayti1703 @george-hm @hmdunce @JohnRush @matr1x-hackmud @mogery @samualtnorman @seanmakesgames @tukib !--&++%#!#+^&&!^^^!&&!#&-%+#!&!---^+%!!%&^-^^-^!-#++#+!+-+%-!#-#&-!!^#-!!#%&+-&^&#--

Hello, mudders! This weekend, veterans of the revolution(s) will have a chance to check in with old friends, celebrate the end of a particularly long and strange march, and pick up some glams courtesy of the MUD's newest monarch. This isn't an event in the traditional sense, but we didn't want November 5th to pass without an opportunity to remember, remember - even in a small way. We're continuing to flesh out our future plans for the game, with particular focus on improving the experience of new players. The plan is still to issue smaller, more focused updates when we're able, alongside a steadier stream of fixes and quality of life improvements. hackmud 2020 update Changing plans for changing times. Hi, mudders! This goes without saying, but the world we're living in at the moment is very different to the world we lived in when we last put out an update for Hackmud. We hope that you're all well and keeping safe. We're a small team, and life under lockdown has taken some getting used to. Even so, we're aware of the important role that videogames and other forms of entertainment are playing in our lives at the moment. We want to make sure that Hackmud remains a place that you can come to for distraction, community, mystery and memes during these tough times. With that in mind, we have made some changes to our development structure in order to account for both the community's needs and the new circumstances we find ourselves in. As you might have noticed, we've moved away from seasonal events. In their place, we're going to begin a program of smaller but more frequent updates, starting today with a suite of improvements to Hackmud's fundamentals that should improve performance for all players. Working in this way allows us to be more reactive to our own changing circumstances. It removes the pressure to scope and produce large, multi-faceted updates, while delivering fixes and new stuff at a steadier pace. These updates will, as ever, be free for all players. Thank you for bearing with us while we get back on track! It means a lot to us that you're choosing to spend your time in the MUD, and we'll do what we can to ensure that it remains a fun, rewarding, and weird place to spend your time. Stay safe, wash your hands, and run scripts.get_level! 2.3.1 Patch Notes // fixed double-slam on hardline // help text on leaving the vlan now updates properly // rules link now shown at startup // countdown timer fix in cultures with comma decimal separator // scroll clamping fixed with mouse wheel / trackpad / pgup / pgdown // client scriptor regex fix // unity3d version update

Hi, Mudders - We're currently working on Hackmud's next seasonal update, Monuments + Beacons. As we detailed in the announcement post back in January, Monuments + Beacons will feature the conclusion of Inner Territories alongside a brand new puzzle event, quality of life improvements, assorted server upgrades, and more Ascii Hats(TM). As the start date of the new season draws closer, however, it's become increasingly apparent that we need more time in order to ensure that Monuments + Beacons as good as it can be. In particular, we're keen to implement what we've learned about what worked - and what didn't work - in the previous season. The time and energy that our community invests in Hackmud events means a huge amount to us, and we want to ensure that your investment is rewarded with an event that is as fair, fun, and robust as we can make it. In order to do this, we're pushing back the start date of Monuments + Beacons by a week, to February 21st, 2020, at 1800 UTC. We're very sorry for the delay and for any disappointment caused, but we believe that this'll result in a better season in the long run. We hope that you'll join us tomorrow, February 13th, for MUDCON 2020 @ 2000UTC - a video call where Hackmud players and developers gather to talk about the state of the MUD, ask questions, and share stories. Even if you can't make it to MUDCON, you'll find some little friends waiting for you in-game on February 21st.

Hi, Mudders!
Last year, we kicked off a new seasonal update schedule for Hackmud with Inner Territories, which included a new event, expanded profile customization options, Ascii Hats(TM) and, more recently, a secure trading system.
Today, we're announcing the next seasonal update. It's called 'Monuments + Beacons', and will feature:
In addition, MUDCON 2020 takes place on Thursday February 13th, 2020. MUDCON is a small, ad-hoc gathering of Hackmud players and developers that takes place both digitally and physically. A video call will take place at 12:00 PST / 20:00 UTC. Well talk about the current state of the MUD and reminisce about bygone eras, grand heists, and perfectly-tuned teapot puzzles.**
We hope you'll join us. Either way, see you on February 21st for the Monuments + Beacons update!
* Thrills calibrated according to the tastes and sensibilities of the average robovac-pattern household utility device. Degree of thrill experienced by human users/teapots/high-mark operators may diverge from this baseline.
** YMMV.
This update will launch on February 21st, 2020, at 1800 UTC.
Patch notes will be available on launch.

Hello! This week we're releasing Inner Territories, the first seasonal update for Hackmud. As we detailed back in September, we've got a bunch of new features planned, including a new currency, a new secure trading system, and customizable user profiles. We'll be posting patch notes and beginning the rollout of the update on November 8th, 2019 at 1800 UTC. There are a few topics that we'd like to raise before launch day. The first is that Hackmud is developed by a (very!) small team, and while we're testing the new features behind the scenes we fully expect to be implementing tweaks and fixes - and in some cases whole features - in the days following the initial update. Hackmud players make the game what it is, and we really appreciate your feedback, support and patience while we figure out any issues that may arise. We're really excited for you to start playing with Inner Territories on November 8th. However, we also know that there'll be things that we want to change - so we're committing time and resources to make sure that we can provide regular patches in the weeks that follow. The second topic concerns the new Bits currency and the in-game store that we're launching as part of this update. The store is intended to help support the ongoing development of Hackmud, and we've chosen this method because it allows players to participate as much or as little as they wish. In addition to the current set of in-game purchases, you'll be able to buy titles and avatars to add to your user profiles. This is primarily an excuse to add ASCII Hats(TM) to Hackmud. However, we also intend it to act as a way for players to leave a tip if they enjoy a particular event or simply the game as a whole. We believe this is a fair, fun and voluntary way to allow players to support the game - and to become official party bus conductors, should they wish. That's all for now! See you on Friday. Oh - before we go - It says here that you're invited to something called the 'Fourth Revolutionary Convention', taking place from Friday at the 'Ministry of Dust'. Make of that whatyouwill. +

We are excited to present the first seasonal Community Event: surf.board! Community Events are puzzles or competitions which have been created by the community and curated by us. See below for a description of the event in the creator's own words. ------------------------------- Come surf with us! The first official surfing competition in hackmud will begin this coming Tuesday morning! The event will be accessible through a script called surf.shack; once the event begins, the script will become publicly available for interaction. At that point, all contenders are free to register and begin surfing immediately. The event will remain active for ten days from the day of launch. Surfing was designed to be as fair as I could conceivably make it, but this is my first public event. There will probably be lots of things breaking, although we did our best to stress test it. There is no advantage to using more than one user, but automation is definitely encouraged to ensure you stay at the top. There will be time pressure of course, but if you play your cards right... even the tortoise can overtake the hare. Prepare yourselves! ------------------------------- =FAQ= A bunch of questions you might have about the event and what it entails What is it? -> It is a competition to see who can build the best bot! So it's not a puzzle? -> The puzzle is an efficiency fight to the top of the leaderboard! How can I participate? -> surf.shack (when it's up) How does it work? -> You'll see! How do I win? -> Earn the most total shaka (points) during the competition! What do I win? -> A glam for participating, a shiny badge for first place! Is it fullsec? -> Yes! Entirely safe, otherwise people wouldn't compete! I'm bad at bots -> Don't worry about it, seriously! Just give it a shot! I really don't know what to do anymore -> Special tips are unlocked as you earn shaka and rank up. Try earning as much shaka as you can! ------------------------------- Release date: 10/15/19 Release time: 04:00 UTC Duration: 10 days Competition Closes: 10/25/19 04:00 UTC

Hey Mudders! Last Sunday marked three years since hackmud released on Steam and about five years since I started working on this project. Hackmud was a fever dream born out of necessity. While it may have started with just me and my bad ideas, it has grown into a whole lot more. Through the years many people have helped hackmud directly or indirectly, but none more than the community itself. Many would say that hackmud is the community, and I would absolutely agree that hackmud would not exist without it. If you are reading this, thank you. You all rock. This game has been an experiment from day one. And in the spirit of that experimentation Im proud to announce a new strategy for ongoing updates: seasons. This concept is not new to online games, and while being explicit about our future plans might be somewhat contrary to the spirit of hackmud, we believe the benefits of a reliable update schedule heavily outweigh any downsides. The current plan is to have four seasons a year, beginning in early February, early May, late July, and early November. Each season will have:
- An announcement with the start date for the season and an overview of the content that will be in it.
- An event and patch notes will be released at the start of the season.
- Quality of life improvements, new features, and other content across the spectrum tied together with a coherent theme.

Dearest Friends & Acquaintances of h a c k m u d
I'm super proud to announce the release of Bot Brains & Slot Upgrades!
bot_brain upgrades allow you to automate your users when you are not sending them commands. Create and train an army of minions to help you mine resources, defend against hacks, infiltrate and disrupt others' botnets, have them manage weapons caches, banks, and so, so much more.
Additional user and retirement slots are now available as well, so you can increase the subterfuge and deceit or build up your arsenal, or just grab up all those totally rad usernames you wanted.
Also, for those of you who have been on break from the game, here's a quick as I can recap of features that have been added since the beginning of this year.
- A handful of events, including two player-run events which are still available - heart.beat and xoxo_amy.cortex
- Many locks have been added (sn_w_usac, l0g_wr1t3r, l0cks & k3ys, many more)
- Chris Thursten has agreed to write words and puzzles in exchange for currency. I'm super pumped to have him on board.
- PvP continues to be fixed and broken. Balance updates are frequent!
- A chat API is available, allowing players to create custom chat clients
- A community-created open-source web chat client has been created to let you chat in-game from outside of the game
- Tier 3 content
- Many months of stability, performance, and security improvements
- Trust script updates (market.*, sys.*, gui.*)
- Client side macros with arguments
- Advanced scripting improvements and features (#G, #db.i multi insert, etc.)

It has been too long. Dear hackmudders-- Some news: Last weekend on the 5th of November I ran hackmud's first event. It was the first time I really felt like this game was a sustainable enterprise. A solid handful of content was delivered, players played really hard and many had an EXCELLENT time. While the content this time was only of the most difficult tier of play, I'd very much like future events to be able to be enjoyed by all tiers of play. The past month and a half has been a lot of catching up to players: fixing server performance, fixing bugs, exploits, complex design to guide better interactions; and while I've made excellent progress in catching up (server performance is consistent and snappy, etc), I'm still behind. This will definitely get better over time (it already has), but it still eats at feature work in a big way. To date, the game has earned enough to keep the game running into next year. I hope to turn that into much longer. :) From a business perspective, the two largest goals are to create stable earnings from the player base, and reduce server costs. I will be using techniques that provide value to players to accomplish these goals (valuable in-game purchasable content that doesn't impact game balance, server performance improvements & optimization) At the same time, I'll be continuing to add meaningful content and features to the game. (Your help prioritizing this has been invaluable; I regularly look at these forums: https://hackmud.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/community/topics/201120367-Bugs-Features-Ideas?sort_by=votes) Additional information: - Patch notes are posted here: https://hackmud.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/categories/204072668-Patch-Notes -- I'll attempt to cross-post them here as well. - I've taken the time to construct more clear rules and I'm continuing to improve on them: https://hackmud.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/categories/204058488-rules - The price of the game is currently a discount in all currencies-- some more than others. This will be increasing as the community matures, bugs are fixed, and new content is added. I appreciate all of your support, patience, and feedback. You all rock. Best, Sean

First off: THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH! It is officially one week since launch. I am the only dev on this project and I am so amazingly overworked at the moment. <3 The servers have been stable for several days, and players are hacking in so many ways! They are spoofing, scripting, deceiving, lying, and fighting their way to victory! MUDWAR-1 has already come and gone, with new intrigue developing every day-- However, I can't keep up with players right now! Which means I can't make new features and fix balance issues! Here are ways YOU can help with my workload: -> Help new players wherever you can! In game, steam forums, game forums, discord, wherever there are people! -> !!DO NOT BREAK THE SANDBOX!! <-- - there are so many ways to hack this game INSIDE the game, please help me by not doing it 'outside the game' - do not create custom clients - do not write scripts that crash other player's clients - do not write scripts that invalidate the "trustedness" of scripts.trust scripts - contact support@hackmud.com if you see any of these issues MANY of these things will be available and approved in the future. I just can't handle the workload right now. -> !!DO NOT CREATE MORE WORK FOR ME!! <- Violators will be removed temporarily or permanently. Please contact support@hackmud.com if you have any questions about this. Happy Hacking! Sean
