Hi Survivors! We've gotten a few questions regarding Keyboard & Mouse controls for the game. KBM support is always active and can be used at any time on top of our gamepad support. If you'd like to see on-screen controls for your control scheme of choice: Go to Settings -> Game Settings -> Controller Icons You can set Controller Icons to Xbox, PlayStation, Keyboard, or Hidden. We also wanted to inform you that an incoming patch will fix the icon sizes for the on-screen KBM control display. In the near future, we will also support key rebinding. Thank you for reading, and we hope you enjoy the game!

Hey Survivors,
Our latest patch for Railbreak is now live on Steam! This patch brings some meaty graphical enhancements to the game, and brings the title up to the 12GB size that was advertised on the store page since launch. If you encounter any instability, just reduce the Texture Quality setting in the Video Settings menu as that area received the biggest upgrade across the game.
Patch 3
- Significant graphics improvements across the entire game. Hard drive space usage increased, however run-time RAM usage only appears slightly higher in-game as per our testing. This change does not affect the game's framerate. - Fixed an issue where the Sinden Lightgun Border would disappear on the Game Over screen.
Hey Survivors!
Good news! A few more glitches have been patched in the world of Railbreak on Steam! These patches are rolling out to all other platforms today as well!
Here's what we did, and don't forget to check the "Update Notes" button on the title screen for this complete list too! We have plenty more updates coming in the weeks ahead!
Patch 2
- Added a "Compile Shaders" button to the Settings menu. - Added the Update Notes screen. - High scores now properly save in all parts of the game. - Added an option in Audio Settings to allow you to set the character's voice volume level independently. - Fixed numerous infrequent softlocks on Acts 2, 4, 5, and 6. - Added an option in Game Settings to allow you to specify additional wait time before moving to another area to make it easier to collect items. - Added an option to the Screen Filter Override in the Game Settings menu called "Never Switch", which will ensure no game overlays ever appear on screen. - Added an option to the Game Settings to specify larger bounding boxes on item pickups. This can only be set at the Main Menu. - Items can now only be picked up if they're visible to the player, and cannot be collected through walls or other surfaces anymore. - Improvements to eliminate a very infrequent situation where being grabbed by a zombie would remove your gun. - Additional performance improvements across the title. - Item highlights now appear at greater range.

Hello again Survivors!
https://youtu.be/y-WS-KRfjDM
Today we're excited to announce a slew of new features for our upcoming arcade on-rails shooter, Railbreak! As previously mentioned, Railbreak will be launching on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Steam, and Epic Games Store on December 22nd at a price of $19.99 USD worldwide!
Since we last showed off the game, Railbreak has evolved in several really important ways. The work on the game has also enhanced the map design and general gameplay for Outbreak: Shades of Horror, as well. Stay tuned for more information on Outbreak: Shades of Horror in the future!
We have FOUR key categories to touch on today!
1. New Elemental Weapons
If you tuned into our last stream, you may know a bit about these already! The primary and secondary weapons in Railbreak are outfitted with unique elemental effects that can give you an advantage in battle. Load up enemies with electricity and watch them explode! Stop zombies in their tracks with ice ammo! Melt through the undead with fire! Send the body parts flying with explosive rounds! The new elemental effects drive the action into absolutely chaotic territory, so be sure to take advantage of your arsenal!
2. 'Glitch' Gameplay Modifier System
As you progress through the game, things may become a little dicey when new modifiers dubbed 'Glitches' trigger during a stage. Some Glitches may lend a helping hand with infinite ammo or a defensive buff, while others may serve as a thorn in your side with enemies gaining additional health or a storm of civilians running out in front of your shots. With a ton of different Glitches to encounter, you'll need to stay on your toes to survive!
3. New Special Boss Zombies
On top of your run-of-the-mill zombies, keep your eyes out for powerful boss monsters! Boom Boom will detonate itself if you're unable to kill it fast enough! The demonic Fetch will blast and blind you with its powerful laser attack! Things get even hairier when you encounter 'Glitched' versions of these beasts; these enhanced versions of the special infected have are faster, stronger, and tankier!
4. Three New Bonus Modes
Thought you knew all the ways you'd play Railbreak? Think again! Deal with constantly firing and random Glitch modifiers in Glitch Gauntlet! Face off against all of the game's bosses in a unique scenario in Boss Rush! Face a special challenge that serves to thank our supporters in Shoutout Shootout! With these new modes, you'll never run out of ways to play Railbreak either alone or with a friend in optional two-player coop!

Development of Railbreak has taken place alongside Shades of Horror, with each game helping and enhancing the other! Railbreak started as a way to test and build out the co-op functionality in Shades of Horror, and it was so fun that we had to create a full featured experience out of it!
Featuring areas and content from the first act of Shades of Horror, Railbreak is the ultimate sneak peek into how development on SOH is progressing.
If you are an on-rails arcade game fan, you will be as thrilled as we are that the Railbreak features optional support for Sinden Lightguns (Keep your peepers open for a bundle, people!!). You'll find no modern polish or game mechanics here. Outbreak: Endless Nightmares twists the series' survival horror gameplay by adding elements of roguelike gameplay. You'll need to explore, hunt for supplies, uncover clues, and fight your way through each anomaly each consisting of semi-procedurally generated instances where both the environment, and the undead, are out to kill you!
Immediately after the events of Outbreak: The Nightmare Chronicles, you find yourself trapped within the remains of Arzt Memorial Hospital the hub to organize your inventory and storage cache, level up your character, or just to take a breather before venturing back out into the chaos. Theres more to discover in the world besides murderous hordes of the undead find the journals scattered about to learn more about the outbreak and ultimately where to find refuge! Dont think death can save you every time you die, you'll awake trapped in this nexus.
Outbreak: Endless Nightmares focuses on extreme replayability by offering multiple character options each with their own abilities, upgrade paths and more! Each time you venture into the anomaly, itll change and become increasingly difficult as you grow in power. You'll need to think carefully about what weapons, healing items, and other supplies you'll bring along. If you're lucky, you may find storage caches that give you access to your expanded inventory, and offer an opportunity to restock. But it's all on you to search your environment for supplies. If you run out ... your fate is sealed!
- Something Old, Something New: Outbreaks signature classic survival gameplay mixed with roguelike elements.
- An Expanding World: Explore a massive, semi-procedurally generated world that expands as the game progresses! Talk to NPCs, visit shops, etc.
- Three Camera Angles: Choose a view that works for you Fixed camera, over the shoulder, or first person.
- Photo Mode: Take beautiful pictures with the camera or use the photo mode to scan or anything dangerous nearby!
- Death Isnt the End: Death returns you to the hub with most of your inventory intact, experience, and money.
- Semi-Procedurally Generated Dungeons: Revisit anomaly dungeons multiple times to find different traps, enemies, puzzles, challenges and loot!
- Co-Op: Fight the nightmare with a friend in 2-player Split-Screen Co-Op.
- Character Options: Choose from 6 unique characters, each with their own backstory, stats, and ability loadouts.
- Crafting: Dismantle, repair, and upgrade weapons; build ammo through gunpowder; and combine healing items to create new formulas and more!
- Game Modes: Choose from 5 gameplay modes Standard, Ironman, Randomizer, Lost Hope, and Easy Mode.
- Uncover the Story: Search through notes and logs to read more from Lydias journal and piece together the past and future of the outbreak.
- Late Game Content / New Game+: Face a randomly generated dungeon of extreme danger near the end of the game AND try multiple new game + modes after completing the story.

Outbreak: The New Nightmare v7.3.0 has been released. This update includes:
- Option to toggle between horizontal and vertical splitscreen.
- Fixed volumetric flashlights on the assault rifle and DMR.
Outbreak: The New Nightmare v7.2.0 has been released. This update includes:
- Fixed an issue where the wrong player name was reported in the inventory screen.
- Fixed an issue where gamepads could not separately bind the right trigger. This update also includes a major update to the underlying input manager and should provide more comprehensive support to more types of input devices.
- Fixed issues where vibration may not work or it may be attributed to the wrong player's controller.
Outbreak: The New Nightmare v7.1 has been released. This patch includes:
- Quick weapon swap bindings have been added. You can now swap between handguns, Shotguns & Rifles, Power Weapons and Melee Weapons through dedicated bindings WITHOUT opening the inventory. This makes it considerably more easy in local co-op to manage your loadout. NOTE: If you've played Outbreak: The New Nightmare before, you will need to either reset your controls to default to use these or manually bind them.
- Key bindings for Keyboard & Mouse on the 2nd local player are now separated. They will no longer automatically receive the same default binding as player one and their bindings can be completely unique. NOTE: If you've played Outbreak: The New Nightmare before, you will need to go to Options -> Controls and reset your controls to the defaults for this to take effect.
- Fixed an issue where the player would not play the equipping animation if they were equipping an item of the same type.
- Added volumetric lights to flashlights.
The Nightmare never ends. Nearly three years after Outbreak: The New Nightmare released on Steam Early Access, major new features are still being added!
Outbreak: The New Nightmare 7.0 has been released. It includes the following enhancements:
- Local 2-player co-op is now available. Access it via the Local Game menu (replacing the Single-player menu). You can customize the controls for both players in the Options -> Controls menu. See this post for details. NOTE: Local co-op is experimental and you may encounter bugs or other unforeseen issues. PLEASE report these to me on the forums or via the official Discord instance so I can address them. Local co-op is DEMANDING on your machine when on high quality levels as it's rendering everything twice. If you experience framerate issues, lower your graphics settings and try it again.
- Numerous performance improvements across the game. Using a new garbage collector which should reduce the amount of hitching experienced during gameplay on mid to lower-end hardware. You should also see minor framerate improvements across the board in single-player and online co-op.
- Upgraded the underlying engine to the latest version. Although this doesn't seem like a major note, this was actually extremely hard to do due to the age of the codebase, as well as how I architected it originally. Successfully updating the engine will allow me to keep pushing forward on new features and fixes, as well as update the console versions and target new consoles in the future!
Hey Survivors!
Well, it's been a while. But there has been a lot underway behind on the scenes on the Outbreak series since the launch of Outbreak: Epidemic on Xbox One and Steam!
One of the most demanded features across all of the co-op titles in the series is local co-op. I'm happy to announce it's in active development and nearing completion on PC (and then will be coming to consoles in some form in the future) for Outbreak: The New Nightmare. I'll be looking into other titles in the series in the future to see what can happen there, but that will be a discussion for another time.
Although Outbreak: The New Nightmare was a co-op title from day one, online multiplayer and local co-op are two very different beasts. I've found a way to balance the requirements and add proper support, as well as upgrade the underlying engine to the latest version. This local co-op is only possible due to the massive performance upgrades I was able to achieve in the last round of major patching. That being said, you will need a beefy rig to run local co-op on fully maxed out settings and high resolution.
So let's talk about it!
Local Co-op Overview
Local co-op in Outbreak: The New Nightmare covers all game modes, characters and functionality. The main player and your partner are equal in terms of abilities and the opportunity to level up. You'll be using characters from the master Steam account of the owner of the title, but each character will continue to level up independently and you can apply perks just as you can online or in single-player.
Local co-op is accessible via the "Local Game" menu (replacing the Single-player menu). This menu still allows you to launch offline single-player games, but now there is a toggle to enable co-op and pick the character of your local co-op player. You can also fully customize your keyboard, mouse and gameplay controls for both players in the options menu.
When you're in-game in local co-op, you'll get an EXP bar for each player and you can track leveling up through that. You can also see both people's inventories at the same time through the lobby screen - although for now only one player can use their inventory at a time. In future updates, I hope to continue to improve this, but the UI code for The New Nightmare is old and wasn't written with extensibility like this in mind.
I'm really excited for this feature to be on the way. I've definitely heard the community feedback and I'm very excited to get it into both PC and console versions as soon as it's possible. Stay tuned for updates! It's coming soon! As always, good luck surviving!
Outbreak: Epidemic is now fully available on Steam! 4-player OTS co-op survival horror is back! Check out the latest major content update adding numerous new scenarios, features, fixes and more across the title. Now out of Early Access and fully available!
Outbreak: The New Nightmare v6.2.0 has been released! This update includes:
- Adjusting lighting on the Forest location to improve visibility with high brightness.
- Fixing an issue where the EPidemic scenario's game logic got messed up during a performance patch.
- Adding support for the Camera Effects DLC.
Outbreak: The New Nightmare v6.1.0 has been released! This update includes:
- Foundational support for DLC within the title, with support for the first piece of DLC which are cosmetic flashlight effects available now!
- More DLC is planned for the future. Stay tuned!
- Very minor bug fixes across the title.

Outbreak: The New Nightmare v6.0.0 has been released! This major update includes:
- Significant improvement to load times across the game.
- Significant improvement to runtime framerates across the game, especially in the City and Forest locations.
- Typical runtime memory usage during gameplay significantly reduced.
- Random enemy spawn on Normal difficulty in Campaign Mode significantly reduced.
- Insane graphics option performance significantly improved.
Hey Survivors! Wow, it's been a while since we've talked about Outbreak: The New Nightmare. Since The New Nightmare left Early Access in January 2018, it's been a whirlwind of development on patches for it and new titles. And then... things went a bit quiet. Well, I've been poking around the old codebase now that I've learned quite a bit on The Nightmare Chronicles, Lost Hope and Epidemic. And... I think we can make some improvements now. I'll keep details light as it's still a WIP, but I'm starting to prepare some updates for the Xbox One and PC version to help improve framerate, load times and address some other issues across the game. Stay tuned. I'll have some news in the next week or so!
Outbreak: Epidemic launches on Steam Early Access on July 9th, 2019. Read all about it here!

The Outbreak series is created by a solo indie-dev in their free time without funding and much in the way of advertising support. Community involvement in sharing and letting the world know about the game is critical to the future success of the series. Just a quick request - If you're enjoying these games and you feel they deserve it, PLEASE consider leaving a positive review to share your thoughts with the community. If you have any issues or require support, PLEASE reach out to me here or on Discord for help before filing a negative review. If I'm unable to meet your expectations, you should absolutely share your thoughts. Above all, I'm looking for honest feedback to improve the series. The response to the Outbreak series has been awesome over the last few years and I would like to keep creating new experiences for years to come. Thank you for your support! :)

To celebrate Outbreak: The New Nightmare's one year anniversary on June 20th, 2018 (Early Access Launch) we have released the v5.11.0 update for Windows, Mac and Linux! This update contains a number of QoL fixes for the game, many inspired by Outbreak: The Nightmare Chronicles.
This update includes (with additional details here compared to the ingame patch notes):
- Improved enemy attack hit detection to provide more opportunity for the player to dodge.
- Players will no longer take damage from touching an enemy's arm during an acid blast and you will only take damage when the enemy is closer to actually making the swing animation. This means there is less chance you'll take damage as they wind up which allows you to juke them easier.
- Enemy attack collisions were also adjusted which should reduce the chance of you getting moved or locked by an enemy swing and there should be less chance of a collider sticking around after an enemy dies.
- Greatly reduced the spawn rate of zombies on Normal and Hard difficulty. Normal has almost 45+ seconds added between spawns and Hard has almost 35+ seconds added between spawns.
- Buffed weapon knockback.
- Rebalanced weapon spawns in Onslaught mode to provide more power weapons, especially on earlier waves.
- Adjusted Insane graphics option to improve performance. Other quality settings were adjusted slightly to bring them closer to Outbreak: The Nightmare Chronicles profiles.

About the Game
As the city burns and the countryside is engulfed by the epidemic, the living are increasingly alone and forced to live with this new reality. Monstrous beasts and disfigured remnants roam freely with their numbers increasing rapidly, slaughtering everything in their path. In the opening chapter, Lydia finds herself separated from her fellow survivors and all alone. After fleeing into a large manor estate to escape the relentless horde, her only goal now is survival. She must explore the manor, locate supplies and find a way to wake from this nightmare. But somehow... she knows her fate is already sealed.
Outbreak: The Nightmare Chronicles is an episodic unforgiving survival horror experience that takes place within the Outbreak universe. Death lurks behind each door as you fight to survive with the limited supplies at your disposal. Search rooms thoroughly and make the right choice when to fight - or flee - from the monstrosities. Featuring classic hardcore survival horror gameplay in a directed single-player experience, you'll need to stay on your toes to stay alive. You have a limited inventory and you'll need to leverage supply caches to store your equipment for use later. Saving your game is also highly restrictive and you'll need to locate the means to record your progress as you explore. Lydia's adventure is just the beginning... can you survive the chronicles and determine the fate of the other survivors?
The entire Outbreak series is now available on Linux and OS X (in addition to Windows) with cross-platform multiplayer across ALL platforms! In addition, the upcoming Outbreak: The Nightmare Chronicles will also ship on Windows, Linux and OS X soon!
Grab some friends on any platform and return to the world of survival horror!

Outbreak: The New Nightmare has transitioned out of Early Access and is now available. We have multiple bundles available at hefty discounts across the Outbreak franchise to celebrate!
Thank for all of the community support during Early Access! The response to the game has been fantastic! As a solo-indie developer, I've worked daily on Outbreak: The New Nightmare and Outbreak for over 2+ years. It's wonderful to see so many people playing and enjoying these games across Steam and Xbox One.
Thank you very much and I look forward to new adventures in the Outbreak series in the future. Join us on Discord to find some co-op buddies and let's return to the world of survival horror!
Welcome to all of the new players of Outbreak: The New Nightmare! Here's some handy tips to start you off in your adventures!
Frame Rate & Performance - DON'T PICK INSANE QUALITY!
In the Options menu, there is a quality option called Insane. When it is selected, the game maxes out the number of shadows, shadow quality, shadow draw distance, AA, AF and much more. It will bring high-end machines to their knees. It's there to assist with getting awesome screenshots, but it's not meant for playing. Try 'High' or 'Very High' instead as your quality option. They will still look great, have dynamic shadows, high AA and AF, but they will run considerably better!. So don't pick Insane! If you have a low-end machine, select 'Very Low' or 'Low'. On those quality settings, the game will aggressive LOD models to help improve your framerate.
Playing with Friends - I can't see their game!
Outbreak: The New Nightmare uses a region-based cloud networking set-up for multiplayer. It is NOT P2P and almost guarantees that you will NOT have connection issues connecting to friends. It's a good thing. BUT! YOU MUST BE ON THE SAME REGION AS YOUR FRIENDS TO SEE THEIR GAMES! In the Options menu, you can change your region. Move it off Best Ping and have everyone select a region that is closest to the group.
Moving Your Character - Camera angle changes mess me up!
If you're having trouble controlling your character using the Modern control scheme, change to the Classic Tank control scheme. This is designed to mimic classic survival horror tank controls and you will not become disoriented when camera changes happen. It's a little less responsive than modern, but you'll thank yourself in the end for using it. Give it a shot!
Game Difficulty - It's way too hard!!!
Outbreak: The New Nightmare is meant to be a difficult experience. You are weak, have virtually no supplies and enemies are everywhere. But, you can stack the odds in your favor a bit!
When selecting your character, pick Lydia, Hank or Harry. Lydia and Hank start with powerful weapons. Harry starts with a larger than normal inventory. In addition, make sure you play on Normal difficulty. On Normal, you receive a significant health and healing bonus. When you're in single-player, the boost very substantial. As more players join the game, the boost diminishes.
Also, as you play you will gain XP and level up your character. Each character has unique stats and abilities. Passive stats just become better when leveling up, but you'll want to manually equip your abilities as you unlock them. Play to your strengths!
Darkness - I can't see anything!
You can toggle a persistent flashlight using the 'F' key or clicking in the right thumbstick on your gamepad when not aiming. This flashlight is available in all scenarios and can greatly help you if the game is too dark!
Good Luck!
The nightmare is brutral, unforgiving and frustrating. Arm yourself well, use your resources effectively, don't waste time and keep fighting. Oh, and USE YOUR MAP! Good luck! Thanks to Standemonium!! and Mr RSpeedy for some of the screenshots used in this post!
Hey Survivors! We made it!
Leaving Steam Early Access on Jan 5th at 1PM EST!
After just about 7 months in Early Access, it's now time to move on. The game has been content complete for about two months now and the focus since then has been polishing through smaller, less drastic patches. As of right now, the game is fairly stable, runs much better than when we launched Early Access and represents the experience I was aiming for! I'm very happy to transition out of Early Access and allow a larger group of players to start trying to survive the nightmare!
THANK YOU to everyone for your support, feedback and constructive criticism during Early Access. I directly implemented tons of community feedback and I encourage you to go back and look at all of our patch notes to see that evolution over time!
But... the game isn't perfect! Why would you leave Early Access!?
Well, the fact is the game will never be perfect. I'm a solo indie developer (with some awesome community support from Standemonium!! and Mr RSpeedy!) and there are hard limits to my resources and time. I've built Outbreak and Outbreak: The New Nightmare over 2+ years working hours daily. I fronted the budget for these games. And I'm very proud of what was produced here. :)
But it's important to aim for milestones and recognize when you hit them. 'The enemy of good is perfection' and I honestly feel Outbreak: The New Nightmare is good. Maybe the animations aren't perfect (I've spent two months trying to upgrade them, but the breakages were too significant), maybe performance isn't perfect (but it has come SO FAR in Early Access), but what's important is the game has been getting fantastic community reception and people are having fun! The content is here. The 4-player co-op is here. Go survive the nightmare and have some fun!
And this isn't the end. Games never stop being developed. There will be patches. There will be new titles in the Outbreak series. This isn't goodbye, it's just the beginning.
So I ask you to look past some of the rough edges and focus on having fun!
Outbreak: The New Nightmare is now available on Xbox One!
In addition, you can now find Outbreak: The New Nightmare on Xbox One. It's a special single-player only release on that console, but it has all of the same content and is still a great adventure. Co-op may come sometime down the road, but I just wasn't able to wing it with my resources. But the game is a lot of fun and runs best on Xbox One X! I encourage you to give it a look!
THANK YOU!
I really mean it. Thank you for all of your feedback, kind words, criticism, streaming, playing and everything else you've done to share the game. I'm very happy that we have an awesome and fun community here! Come talk to us on Discord and grab some co-op buddies! It's time to have some fun, so get out there and start surviving to Wave 25 of Onslaught mode!
Happy New Year! We're just days away from the transition out of Early Access and our release on Xbox One! Thank you for all of your support in 2017, including all of the great feedback, bug reports, feature requests, game streams and anything else you did to support this game! We have an awesome community and it's all thanks to YOU! Just a quick reminder that the game price will be increasing once we transition out of Early Access, so grab it now while it's cheap!
Thank you again and have fun surviving in 2018!
HAPPY NEW YEAR! We're about one week out from Outbreak: The New Nightmare releasing on both Steam and Xbox One!
A Brief Development History
I started work developing Outbreak and Outbreak: The New Nightmare over 2 years ago. These games were created in Unity, written in C# and have been the result of multiple hours of work daily over that time primarily by me. I had some great community support and help along the way from folks like Standemonium!!, Mr RSpeedy and a few other awesome folks as well, which kept me going during those long days. These games were produced with virtually no budget (I paid out of pocket for the dev costs) and were created because I wanted to play games in this genre, even though large developers didn't seem to make them anymore.
Working off of the experiences I had with classic survival horror games of the 90s and early 2000s, I tried to create an experience that I wanted to play. As we near the full release of the second game in this franchise, I very much hope you are enjoying them too. Don't be shy about filing a positive Steam or Xbox review if you enjoyed the experience as well!
Steam Release Details
Outbreak: The New Nightmare is transitioning out of Steam Early Access on or around Jan. 5th, 2018. During the release process, the price of the game will be increasing. As soon as that increase is accepted by Valve, I'll trigger the transition to a full release. The game is currently content complete, so what you buy and play today on discount is the same experience folks will be playing next week. SO GRAB IT NOW WHILE IT'S CHEAP!
Xbox One Release Details
The Xbox One release of Outbreak: The New Nightmare is a special single-player only version of the game. It's currently available for pre-order now at a 20% discount and will be fully released on January 3rd, 2018. It features significantly improved performance when played on an Xbox One X console.
So what else is new?
A lot of the work over the last two weeks has been preparing for the full launches of Outbreak: The New Nightmare on both platforms. I've been finishing up paperwork, reaching out to press, trying to line up reviewers and much more. If you're a reviewer or streamer and can verify your YouTube or Twitch profile, please reach out and I can provide you with press copies for either platform. In the next week, I'll be doing some streaming and celebrating the full launch of both platforms.
THANK YOU!!!
Thank you again for the continued support for the game. It's been great seeing so many new folks playing and enjoying their expeirence. If you enjoy the game and feel it deserves it, PLEASE file a positive Steam review and share your thoughts! If you have any feedback, reach out to me anytime! Thank you and have fun!!!
Outbreak: The New Nightmare is celebrating the end of Early Access with a 50% off sale through Jan 4th, 2018! After the sale, we're transitioning to the full release AND raising the price! Grab it now because it won't be this cheap for a long time!
We made it! Leaving Early Access around Jan. 5th, 2018!
It's been an incredible ride but we're finally at the end of Early Access! After over TWO years in development primarily by a single developer with no budget (and some awesome assists along the way from Standemonium!! and Mr RSpeedy!) we're ready to leave Early Access! Building Outbreak and Outbreak: The New Nightmare have been AWESOME experiences for me! Thanks to all of the awesome community support along the way! This definitely will not be the last Outbreak experience. Who knows where the series will go next... but I definitely have quite a lot of ideas!
We're also launching on Xbox One!
We're happy to announce Outbreak: The New Nightmare will be appearing on Xbox One as a single player experience. You can pre-order it RIGHT NOW and it releases on January 3rd! Grab it during pre-order for a 20% discount!
THANK YOU!
Thank you to everyone for their support during the development of the game. I've received so many kind and supporting messages. It really helped keep development going during those long nights (I was usually spending multiple hours per day on the project over the last two years!). Thank you and enjoy the game! And grab it while it's cheap! :D
Outbreak: The New Nightmare is leaving Steam Early Access in early January 2018. When it transitions to full release, the price will be increasing. Grab it while it's cheap and save some $$$! The game will also be releasing as a single-player title on Xbox One on January 3rd. Preorders will be starting about 2 weeks prior to the launch date.
Heck of a ride
Outbreak: The New Nightmare has now been in Early Access for nearly six months. In that time, I've added huge amounts of content, features, fixes and polish. Much of this work and the shape of the game has been driven by YOU! Community feedback has been frequent and very constructive. A lot of the features present today are because the community requested them. I'm very thankful that everyone has shown the game such support!
Now that the game is content complete, we're preparing to transition to a full release. Games are never perfect and there will always be areas that could use a bit more polish, or more features necessary, but it's important to know when it's time to cut a release. As a single developer (with virtually no budget), I'm very proud of the game that was produced. I've learned a lot during the development of this title and I'm very excited to lend that experience towards future survival horror titles.
Thanks to everyone in the community for supporting both Outbreak: The New Nightmare and Outbreak. Thanks very much for the contributions of Standemonium towards the scenario design for the office and city locations. Thanks to Mr RSpeedy for his massive community contributions (and the great gif above). And a massive thank you to everyone who played the game and took the time to provide Steam reviews as well!
Console port?
With the imminent transition out of Early Access, it seems like an excellent time to announce the upcoming release of the Xbox One version of the game. Outbreak: The New Nightmare launches on Xbox One on January 3rd, 2018! Preorders will start about two weeks before the release date. As with the XB1 version of Outbreak, this will launch as a single-player affair at a lower price point. But it'll still be great fun!
So what other development is happening right now?
I'm currently spending my dev time looking into upgrading the underlying engine to see if we can get any additional performance or graphics polish gains. The upgrade is fairly rough now with the size of the project so no promises, but it would be useful to be able to be on the latest version of Unity.
Thank you!
Thank you again for making the development of Outbreak: The New Nightmare and Outbreak successful and positive experiences! We have an awesome community and I'm very excited for the larger Steam community to be able to play and enjoy the game! Thank you!
We're happy to announce that v5.10.0 of Outbreak: The New Nightmare has been released. It includes the following changes:
- Zombies no longer attack through doors. If a door is unlocked, they will open it and wait a short time before performing a subsequent action.
- Buffed the boss of the Epidemic scenario.
- Minor UI changes across the game.
- Added additional gameplay tips to the main menu.
- Added button to force the next tip to display on demand on the main menu.
- Postgame kill counter and accuracy now only tracks gun-type weapons.
- Grenade and explosion kills are now tracked properly, but does not impact accuracy.
- The Shotgun and Shotgun Shells will now appear more frequently in lower Onslaught waves.
Outbreak: The New Nightmare is leaving Early Access in January 2018. When the game transitions to a full release, the price will increase. Grab it now at the cheaper price point and tell your friends!
With just little over a month to go until the transition to full release, the nightmare is becoming more and more real. This game has had a fantastic run in Early Access (almost 6 months now!) and have added a tremendous amount of content, features, fixes, performance boosts and much much more. The community has been fantastic in giving the game non-stop feedback that has directly shaped the direction and presentation of the experience.
THANK YOU for all of your support, well wishes and thoughts. With co-op survival horror dying off in the last few years, it has been awesome to be a part of revitalizing the genre. And I feel it turned out pretty well for being primarily worked on by a single developer for over two years with no budget. ;)
As we close in on the final stretch, there's a few more fixes and tweaks that are being eyed up right now. Some of them are rather dangerous, so they might not make the cut, but polish is always on my mind. I'm also busy working on the console port as well.
I also want to make sure to call out the support from key community members like Standemonium!! and Mr RSpeedy. Stan was a great help in layouting the office and city initial environments and Speedy has been a fantastic community leader and coordinator (and trailer participant!). Their support helped me greatly through the daily grind as I continued to build each piece and integrate necessary assets. (And thank you to the Unity Asset Store creators as well!)
I'm very excited for the full release and to begin looking into the next survival horror experience I'd like to make. Thank you everyone for playing and supporting the game! We have some very exciting times ahead in January 2018 and I'm looking forward to playing the game with everyone.
THANK YOU!!! ːsteamhappyː
Steam Trading Cards Released!
Outbreak: The New Nightmare now supports Steam Trading Cards! Collect all of the character cards including a monster card, badges, backgrounds and more while playing! You'll see these drops pretty frequently. If you've played in the past, you might just find some cards showing up in your inventory as well! ;)

Outbreak: The New Nightmare is 40% off for the Steam Autumn Sale! Remember, We're leaving Steam Early Access in January 2018 and the game price will be increasing! If you're interested in grabbing it before the price increase (for you AND your friends), it's a great time as the game is nearly content complete! Have fun!

Hey everyone! Checking in for a super quick weekly update! Let's handle some paperwork and then jump into the development process!
Outbreak: The New Nightmare is leaving Early Access in January 2018!
As we announced a little while back, we're going to be departing Steam Early Access in January 2018! Outbreak and Outbreak: The New Nightmare have been in development now for well over two years and we're reaching a point where the latest title is fairly content complete. There will always be a bug or two hanging around and things may never be perfect, but the title has realized the vision I set out for it.
I'm announcing this as early in advance so people can buy the title now at the lower price point. When we leave Early Access, the price of the game will increase! So if you're looking to survive the nightmare and save some cash, make sure to buy it before we transition to a full product.
So what's been new on the development side?
I've been working hard to get through the hoops and finish the pieces for an Xbox One release of the title. Unfortunately, a lot of the work over the last two weeks has been specific to that version, so there's not a ton to show on the Steam side. But I wanted to keep everyone in the loop on where the time is being spent. I'm hoping to swing back around for a few more fixes here and there on the PC version prior to the transition to full release though. So stay tuned and keep submitting feedback!
And that's about it!
That's the thing about game development. Sometimes it results in big changes that are flashy and showy, and sometimes it's just developing necessary work to keep going. Stay tuned to hear about where we're heading next. Thank you to everyone who has been playing and submitting feedback. The last few patches have been fantastic and it's awesome to see the game continue to come together! ːsteamhappyː Thanks as always to Mr RSpeedy for some of the shots in this post!
We're happy to announce that v5.6.0 of Outbreak: The New Nightmare has been released. It includes the following changes:
- Crawling enemies no longer spawn on the City scenario.
- Elena is immune to poison, even if she equips skills that increase her poison chance.
- Finale boss in the Shelter scenario buffed.
- Nightmare difficulty now awards more XP than Biohazard difficulty.
- Adjusted lighting on Cure, Asylum and Ephemeral scenarios.
- Addressed an issue where the lobby button on the end game screen would appear while other players were still alive.
We're happy to announce that v5.5.0 of Outbreak: The New Nightmare has been released. It includes the following changes:
- Fixed issues where you could not spawn with the painkillers, ointment or ipecac.
- Addressed areas in several maps where player characters could become stuck. This was primarily on the Outbreak, Office, Blackout, Shelter, Bunker and Epidemic scenarios.
We're happy to announce that v5.4.0 of Outbreak: The New Nightmare has been released. This update addresses the known invisible zombie issues and also includes:
- Fixed issues where dynamically spawned enemies would be invisible to non-host players in multiplayer games, especially in the Outbreak and Office scenarios.
- Further reduced the chances that enemies will be inactive for non-host players in multiplayer when spawning.
- Addressed minor text issues in Onslaught mode.
