Happy Sunday everyone! @Sim17 from Discord asked me to enable different wagons in the Versus Mode for a tournament. We made a version where you can disable "Versus: Cannon Wagon only" under Settings->Accessibility (might not be the best spot to put it). The sampled wagon is bound to the seed, similar to the quick mode. Changelog 2.1-8db720a41 New: Versus matches can start with different wagons than the cannon wagon when you disable under settings->Accessibility->"Versus: Cannon Wagon only"

Beloved railroad engineers, during the Unrailed 2 announcement yesterday, we also pushed a new update for Unrailed!, introducing Jeff the Giraffe and some fixes and improvements! Changelog 2.1-0f5e38e19: - New: Added Jeff as playable character who is introducing also U2 - New: Allow fast skipping in replays (in ESC menu) - New: Allow players to hide Session ID in Lobby (in ESC menu) - New: Allow hosts to prevent joining during normal gameplay (Always|Only in Shop,Lobby|Only in Lobby) - New: Added a respawn button for the bot in Singleplayer. Kick & Ban Update

Dear track building community, we recently pushed pushed some changes around the kick/ban system but we noticed some bugs as well as occasional accidental blockings of friends. Therefore we tried to overhaul it a bit. Here is an overview: - You can kick via [ESC]->[Manage Players] - The host kicks instantly. Non-master players can majority vote-kick. Kicked players will be thrown out of a session. - When kicking, you'll be asked whether you want to block the player as well. If you are host and blocked a player, the player won't be able to join any your sessions anymore (that is why you don't want to block your friends). You can unblock players in the main menu under [ESC]->[Blocked Players]. - Additionally, we can issue global blocks ("bans"). Banned players will automatically be blocked from every session if the host did not un-block the player via the block list locally. That means if you're banned, you can still play with your friends online if you ask them to un-block you. However, random matchmaking will be disabled. We want to ban players who actively try to sabotage other matches. We decide on evidence (eg replays) from Discord and we count all (locally) issued blocks as well. In any case, if you're banned, feel free to reach out to us:
We are going to ban some players right away and hope that less players are motivated to grief in general. Dear railroad engeineers! We fixed some bugs that occured since the last update. Note that we pushed the update already a week ago but forgot to add the patch notes on steam. Heya railroad workers! It has been a while since the last major update, so we're stoked this update is finally out of the door. This time, we're heading for the depths of the oceans! You will have to defy the challenge of the deep to return back to the surface. Steam Deck Support & the Return of Halloween-Mode!

Heya railroad workers! Halloween is around the corner and our decorated main menu, as well as our "Spooky" halloween-mode will return ! Aaaand in other news, Unrailed is now officially Steam Deck verified! Combining both together, this is what you could look like:
Happy Deck-o-ween! Changelog 2.0-405ad9df7: - Improvement: Spooky-Mode now available in local or (online) Time-Lobby and the menu is halloween themed - Improvement: General performance improvements (shader improvements, map-gen is more efficient, lag-spikes should be reduced). Also, the last Steam Deck submission gave us only "playable" but not yet "verified", since some texts were too small and keyboard-icons were still shown. This should now be fixed and we just re-submitted for a new verification. Changelog 2.0-3d41f289a (compatible with production version except for time mode) - Improvement: General performance improvements (shader improvements, map-gen is more efficient, lag-spikes should be reduced). Especially for low-end devices should profit. - Improvement: Steam Deck has higher UI font-size and allows zooming during the game (with select) and hides keyboard UI elements until a keyboard button is pressed - Bug fix: Escape menu missing in the last experimental version - Change: Non-modifiable controls in the "manage controller" menu are shown at the bottom (eg menu controls) - Crash fix: "Yeti-Bug". Some Frosty New Characters Arrived!

New Game Mode & More

Heya railroad workers! We're back with an update that includes a new game mode and a bunch of features you guys asked for here on Steam and over on our Discord server ( http://discord.gg/unrailed ). First of all, we are trying out a new game mode - "TIME-MODE" by name - that lets you race against the clock, and puts you against a randomized order of biomes. Next, we've added "auto-save" feature to the checkpoint system: In your savegame list, there should now be a last visited checkpoint as first entry. The savegame won't be deleted when opening it and should hopefully reduce the amount of lost savegames. Just keep in mind that there is currently only one such slot, so if you start a new checkpoint game, the slot will be overwritten by the last checkpoint of the new game. Also note that you can still save at any station or at the last checkpoint just as before, independent of this feature. The kick system has also been improved, now the host has the complete power over who gets kicked which prevents other players from joining and kicking the host. Otherwise, two (non-host) players can also votekick somebody out. You can kick via [ESC]->[Manage Players]. Votekicks should appear as information popup for all other players. There is also now a statistics menu that shows you a lot of stats from the game - like how many trees you chopped and how much time you spend on mars. And finally, we've fixed a lot of the bugs you reported on the #Bugs channel on Discord. As always, should you have some feedback or if you find bugs we haven't fixed yet let us know here or on our Discord server. End of Free-Play-Event & Sale continues

Winter is coming!

A small winter update went live today that includes a seasonally fitting snowy main menu and a new unlockable character - a reindeer ! In other news, we received many requests of having better matchmaking since with random matching, only lobbies (non-game) session are being found. To cope with that, we added a session-browser (you can also access it via https://unrailed-online.com/sessions), giving you the possibility to join sessions even after the game was already started. Sessions can be found when "allow random players to join" is activated. Note that it can also be deactivated during the game in the escape-menu by the host if you want to prevent players to find your session. And with that we wish all of you happy holidays!

1.0 IS OUT NOW!

Heya railroad workers! The time has come, we're leaving early access and rolling out Unrailed 1.0 Obviously this launch comes with a big update attached . Take a look at the major new features:
Most of this should be self explanatory, just a quick comment about the new difficulties: The kids setting allows you, among other tweaks, to restart at every station. The extreme setting on the other hand takes things to the next level and should be a challenge even for experienced Unrailed players. Also, we're not going to spoil the part about the black silhouette, you'll have to figure out that one by yourself by playing the game . Due to popular demand, we're also adding wallpapers and profile pictures to the supporter pack. And additionally, the soundtrack gets expanded by the Endgame EP which contains new tracks from, well, the endgame of Unrailed and the Nocturne Edition which contains the night versions of the tracks.
Early access has really been an awesome journey for us. When we started working on Unrailed almost three years ago we'd have never thought that such a wholesome community would form around it. The feedback and support we've received from you guys has helped us a great bit in improving the game. And we intend to keep doing that in the future.

New Character, QOL improvements and a Demo

Heya Railroad-Engineers! If you have read our last announcement what follows should sound pretty familiar. First off, the owl sitting smugly in the tree above joins the character roster (you'll have to unlock it though). Furthermore, there are a couple of performance improvements, bug fixes and some balancing changes. We also threw some new achievements into the mix:
But most importantly, this update adds a couple of quality of live improvements that were requested from our community on our Discord server. A quick selection:

  • Players can now reorder wagons in the shop
  • There's now a third page of emoji to alert the team to the current quest or to signal AFK-time
  • A small notification will pop up when new characters are unlocked
  • Many improvements that make the single-player bot smarter
As announced, this is the update that breaks current savegames and replays but is hopefully the last one to do so. If that is new to you, no need to panic - you can still access them by switching to a legacy version of Unrailed (right-click on the game, choose Properties..., then BETAS and choose legacy-0.10-c2379ab4c from the dropdown list). Similarly, you can access old highscores by selecting legacy at unrailed-online.com/highscore Finally, there will be a demo availabe in the next couple of days. In case you aren't sure what to expect from Unrailed, you can now easily find out! Just note that the demo only shows a small subset of the game - there is a lot more to discover and unlock in the full version. Pre-Release Preparation Update

Heya Railroad-Engineers! We would like to give you the most important details for the next update. The main reason for the next update (scheduled for the 17th of August at 7pm CEST) is pushing the technical base for the full-release-update for the game. The next update is neither the Early Access release, nor the final update. The release will be at some point soon but we can't give any specific information on that yet, except that we are also working on the Switch, PS4 and Xbox One port, which are planned to be released together, if possible. The upcoming update is only a small subset of the new features we are planning for the Early Access release. The update will consist mostly of performance improvements, bug fixes, balancing updates, some new achievements, overall polishing, as well as a new owl character as mentioned before. Due to the balancing and the technical changes we made, the new version will unfortunately be incompatible with existing savegames and replays and the highscore table will be branched off (meaning the old highscores will still be visible online but not ingame anymore). We are really sorry for that :( - we tried to keep compatability for as long as we could but it finally became infeasible to keep migrating all the old data. We will keep the current version on a separate branch on steam ("legacy-0.10-c2379ab4c" which can be accessed in the BETAS tab in the game properties in steam), so that if you wish to play the old version, you can still do so. Note that the update does not affect your in-game progress. Above that, as mentioned previously, our publisher plans to adjust the price with this update due to the upcoming ending of the Early Access phase and we will provide a Demo version. At this point we want to mention how happy we are about all players who joined our community and kept us motivated on working on the game and who helped us shaping and finding new ideas as well as bugs. Thanks to you, we made it thus already into the 11th month of our originally 6 month planned Early Access time. Also, since many players don't know us from the beginning, we want to make a small summary of what has changed in the game during that time:

What lies ahead

We are delighted to be able to share with you, that we are reaching the last steps of our preparation for the Full Release of Unrailed - and are able to share more specific details about that really soon. One of the few tasks having to be done is adjusting the price of the game, reflecting all the changes and additional features that have been added since Early Access Start. Since we know, that changes in pricing aren't always taken as the most positive thing on earth, we wanted to let you know as far as possible beforehand - and smoothen the change as good as possible - which is why we will be putting Unrailed up on Sale until the price change on the 17th of august at 7pm CEST. But this is not everything - additionally, at the same time, we will be releasing our free Demo and a new character to play as, so everyone who is still wondering if Unrailed is something for them, can test it out after the update hits the servers - with owl power!

The Single-Player Update

Heya railroad workers! This update has been in the works for a loooong time. A single player mode was actually one of the first things we worked on after we bolted down the core gameplay. We iterated through a couple of design approaches, however we never felt that the single-player mode came close enough to the chaotic gameplay that ensues when playing Unrailed cooperatively. But since a single-player mode has been by far the most requested feature since our launch in September, we decided to really focus on that mode and thought a lot about how to make it as interactive and chaotic as Unrailed is when played with other players. And we think this time we managed to get there. What we came up with is the following: When you play alone, the bot will help you out! And just like with human players, you can give it commands using emoji, but the bot will actually follow them. You can even let it know exactly where you want to lay your tracks through and the bot helps you plough through that path. Also, we added a sandbox-mode, where you can customize your train right at the beginning with all things you have already unlocked, to help you train with different train-setups. We hope you'll dig the new modes as much as we do! And as always, should you have any feedback, leave it down here or on our Discord-server.

New characters incoming!


Hi railroad workers! We just added three new playable characters to the roster! They were developed in collaboration with our Chinese co-publisher bilibili and are in fact modelled after bilibili's mascots.

In other news, we also made some major under-the-hood changes that should improve the game's performance. But that might come with some bugs that slipped past our QA, so let us know if something acts up on our Discord-server here. Finally, Unrailed will also be 25% off until April 27! MacOS Linux Build Now Available!

Heya engineers! We just put the MacOS & Linux versions of Unrailed - which we have been testing on our experimental branch for a while now - live on the main Steam branch. Just a quick note regarding supported OS': We officially support Ubuntu 18.04 and MacOS Catalina, however Unrailed should run on many other Distros and older MacOS versions as long as you have a somewhat recent Mac with an Intel CPU. One more feature for those of you with a reaaally wide screen setup: We now support screen ratios up to 48:9. Here is a preview of what you will look like:

2nd Early Access Update

Heya railroad workers! Alright, time for update number two. It's a smaller one but it comes with two frequently requested featuers - new languages and savegames:
Languages are pretty self-explanatory (and featured in another post), but let me say a couple of words about savegames: We know they are a controversial feature because on one hand, they allow inexperienced players to progress faster, but on the other hand it might take away from the roguelike core of Unrailed. We decided to tackle this problem in two parts: Part one allows you save and quit at each train station and continue if you return - but there is still permadeath - if you crash you have to begin from scratch. This is just a convenience feature for people that want to split their sessions into parts. Part two enables players to progress in the game without having to restart from the beginning if they crash. Here the first station in each new biome acts as a checkpoint. This means you'll still have to work quite a bit for each checkpoint, but allows you to learn quicker from your mistakes. However, games with checkpoints activated are not shown on the online leaderboards. As always, if you have feedback or even already an idea how we could improve our save-system-approach come by our Discord server.

1st Early Access Update

Our wee little track-building game is now already about a month and a half old! It was a blast to see the community grow this fast and wholesome. Our Discord has reached 2'500 members and Unrailed has been watched on Twitch alone for over 600'000 hours. Even from a competitive standpoint new heights were reached: The previous record featured in our last post has since been beaten by one of nearly double the distance! Since launch we've wached on all these channels for feedback and new content ideas. And we distilled parts of that into our first update. Heyho, railroad workers! As we already talked about in our recent Community Recap #1 you guys are crazy about proving yourself against your friends and/or rivals. It took them 4 hours and 15 minutes and a lot of nerves, but in the end they succeeded in becoming record holders.
We enjoy the passion you are putting into Unrailed! and even if we cant promise much at this point in time, you can be sure, that we are planning to support this enthusiasm as good as we can and keep on working out those aspects of the game, that our playerbase already is going crazy about - so keep your eyes wide open, so you won't miss our upcoming events. Hey, railroad workers! It has now been precisely one week since we dived deep into Early Access territory and presented our precious indie game Unrailed! to the public. And what a week it was the sheer amount of feedback you guys have been delivering on Discord or Steam is mindblowing. And we are already on it. Feedback Since most of the things you are bringing to our ears need some tinkering in the code, it's only realistic that it takes a bit longer to fully implement gameplay feedback (When it comes to hotfixing issues, you can see here the urgent fixes we did right after Early Access Launch) but that was not everything you were talking about in the last 7 days: Aligned to your feedback we reworked a lot of our Discord Server: Content Ideas Even though we already have some great plans of our own, we still appreciate and value the big Hive Mind so keep those brilliant thoughts coming, who knows, maybe you will find your new idea in the game sooner or later. Streams Since Unrailed! is connected to Discord you can easily stream your gameplay via the Discord Feature but if you are streaming on another plattform, feel free to leave us your link, so we can say hi! Competitive Unrailed! might be a co-op spectacle where you work together to achieve your goal but seemingly that doesn't stop you, our community, from trying to test yourself against other players as well. This is why we created a brand new "competitive-section" on our Discord Server, where you are able to share your Distance Highscores or Speedrun Records! If you already want to test your skills: We found a particularly tricky Seed, which some players of our community declared "unbeatable" why dont you give it a try? Our trip to Seattle right before the Early Access Launch was a great way of seeing player reactions first hand - especially since some people might say, having your teammate right next to you opens up a whole new layer of "fun". Seeing you interact with each other and seeing that the crowd got hyped up watching you wiggle through the maps was the most wonderful thing we could have experienced.

  • Crash fix related to the GamePad controller
  • Crash fix on start up (due to some graphics cards / drivers setups)
  • Crash fix when entering invalid characters in the seed input
  • Free region choosing for chinese and non chinese players
  • Multiple crash fixes in the game-end lobby (when players connect and disconnect)
