Economic miracles - Update v0.9.23


Hey, rulers, This is the first content update we're sending into the world since we released Warnament on Google Play. The new content is available in all versions but if you happen to be an Android user, you can also check them all out for free! ...which is somewhat ironic, given that this update brings a lot of interesting changes to the economic part of the game. v0.9.23 Released!


  • Improved map visuals, with smoother transitions between elements when zooming out
  • Completely reformed province information menu
  • The infrastructure level of a province and its condition (whether it's damaged by war or not) affects the efficiency of buildings. For example, a factory in a city will produce almost twice as many resources. And if your province is heavily damaged by an enemy battleship or artillery, your buildings will operate with very low efficiency
  • Administration costs have been added and infrastructure bonuses have been changed. It has become much more important to develop your regions, as your economy, rather than just the number of provinces, starts to play a much bigger role

  • Regarding the economy: from now on, in the province menu, you can view the economy, population, and amount of money per turn of any country on the map (e.g. you can check the population of the enemy's province and think a hundred times whether it's worth attacking the enemy)
  • In multiplayer, the time of moving on to the next turn depends on the total number of players who pressed the 'Next turn' button. The more players press it, the sooner the next turn will start
  • Anticheat has been improved to no longer allow anyone to interfere with your winning in multiplayer games.
  • Performance has been improved (especially noticeable on mobile devices)
  • Added translation into Filipino
  • Various minor bugs have been fixed

We tried to make a trailer with AI. Oh boy... - Warnament Dev Update #14


Hey rulers! Its been an intense month, to say the least, as we have been pushing hard to release Warnament on Android! If you wish to play the game right now, dont hold yourself back. Its free to play with an option to support us by buying cosmetic items. But today, well be telling a different story. Warnament is released in beta mode on Google Play (which means you wont be seeing user reviews, but we will). Our primary focus is still to hit Early Access on Steam, but the release is a release, so we decided it deserves a proper trailer. Since at Luden.io, were big fans of experimenting, so we ended up having to answer a question: are AI algorithms of today good enough to generate animations for trailers? The answer is errrr Well, more on that below. [previewyoutube=2_63DDvFa7k;full][/previewyoutube] We cooperated with Lev Koretski, a video maker whose works you mightve seen on Steam pages of Black Skylands, Graveyard Keeper, Cartel Tycoon, and other renowned games. You should definitely check out his sample reel, especially if youre an indie game maker! Since Warnament only has a tiny dev team, we wouldnt be able to afford fancy animations and visual effects. Therefore, we decided to refer to the silicon wisdom of AI models for animation. Long story short: it was not as easy as we estimated, and only tiny bits of what was generated by the model made their way to the trailer. A quote from Lev himself and some goofy tryouts is below: [quote][Working with AI models] became not so much a help but rather a perpetually breaking crutch that we still had to learn to work with. Along the way, I encountered numerous difficulties. I tried many neural networks available for free (such as Runway, Vidu, Google Veo, Dream Machine by Luma), and all of them operated more or less the same way: you upload 1-2 pictures, and the AI creates animation. You can write a prompt, but often it doesn't work. Or, you need to go through a bunch of formulations to get the desired result. It feels like the developers of neural networks deliberately limit creators with prompts so that as many attempts are made as possible and the [number of props provided per month in a] subscription runs out.[/quote] Heres a bunch of things we got in response to our prompts. This takes the concept of giving ones life for their country to a whole new level: [previewyoutube=l-xoNsWiGKM;full][/previewyoutube] And heres the Eiffel Tower merging with a house (prompt: slow approach to a nuclear explosion): [previewyoutube=1fsGv37oAbY;full][/previewyoutube] Can you spot that one soldier whos running backwards? So chances are good that one day they will become a trustworthy video makers helper. This day just has not yet come. As for the trailer - let us know how you like it! The State of War - Warnament Dev Update #13


Hey, rulers! It's been a while since we reported on Warnament's progress. It's partly because we got carried away with developing the game. Time passed by as we introduced small changes to the game every two weeks. A couple of new political institutions here, a nice vignette for the map there, a bunch of fixes on the server side over here Little by little, we ended up with quite a different game: more stable, more pretty, and with much deeper gameplay. In this dev update, we will try to review the most significant additions to Warnament. We still keep to our philosophy of the game being compact and easy to start playing, but more experienced rulers will find themselves with a much bigger toolkit for dominating the world. Even the gloriest of wars must come to an end at some point (which is a good thing, we might add), and so does Warnament. There's now a limit of 100 turns per session (or 2 hours in multiplayer, by default), after which the countries are rated by their success in controlling territory, the state of economics, and the number of vassal states.
A nice place to try out this new system is our new scenario - World War II - in which history may take some unexpected terms: from the secession of Catalonia to the re-establishment of the Russian Empire. This scenario relies heavily on the new rebellion mechanics: if there's too much discontent among the population, you might end up with some of your provinces declaring independence. It's also how Israel might appear on the map in a quite different way than it did, according to history books. If (or should we say - when?) it comes to war, rulers of Warnament will have more instruments at their disposal - both military and diplomatic. The former includes garrisons, the size of which depends on the overall economic situation in a province. From now on, one just can't move an army to another country's province and claim it as their own - they would have to completely destroy the garrison.
s for battles, there's now an element of randomness: even if you attack with a bigger army, there's still a chance of losing a battle. And when the fog of war dissipates and the negotiations for peace are happening, one of the conditions of the treaty may be creating a demilitarized zone in the bordering provinces. No armies can be present in such provinces for a selected amount of turns. Some peculiar changes were made in domestic politics, especially for those preferring a more extravagant style of play. Communist countries might treat their population with good old repressions, which may cause paranoia among the authorities, resulting in deteriorated relations with other countries. Which is probably bad news for them, because communist states now have a perk of increased artillery range.
Fascist states have a whole new array of options for going wild, and establishing policies of xenophobia and/or occultism: if you ever considered devoting your life to serving the dark gods - that's your chance (we don't judge). Monarchs in Warnament now have more options, too: if you think that the progress has gone too far, you can always return to feudalism or re-establish serfdom. You are the king, after all! Regardless of your political regime, the new, more flexible, and deep economic system in Warnament will be at your disposal. You can now allocate a budget for each province individually, which influences its garrison size and the number of slots available for buildings. And on the national level, you can financially stimulate science, infrastructure, or population independently, allowing you to fine-tune the economics to match your style of play.
These are the most prominent changes in the gameplay, but any game is more than just mechanics: other aspects of Warnament were improved as well. We've worked a lot on the server side of the game, and now any player can start hosting a multiplayer session at any time. We've also made quite a few changes to the game's UI and UX and added pretty borders for countries on the map:

No date is nailed to the wall yet, but our expectations are to ship the game by the end of September. Warnament will be released as a free-to-play game with an option to buy cosmetic items for money. On one hand, this is an intermediate stage of the game's development: our main focus is to hit Early Access on Steam. But, on the other hand, we already have an experience of releasing a mobile grand strategy: Cold Path, Warnament's spiritual precessor, was initially released on Android and accumulated a handsome number of 1+ million downloads. So if you enjoy mobile gaming, make sure to join our Discord server to be among the first to know about the upcoming release. It's a Garrison, Son - Update v0.9.14


Hey rulers! In this update, we're changing the rules for capturing provinces, to make it more realistic and interesting. v0.9.14 Released!


  • Garrisons were added to each province. Subsequently, the requirement for a minimal amount of troops to conquer a province was removed. From now on, to secure a territory, one must completely destroy its garrison. Garrisons slowly recover during 10 turns, if they manage to survive an attack. The size of a garrison depends on the economics of the province where it's stated. Therefore, conquering an advanced province (like the capitals of states) requires more power - using artillery will be especially effective. Respectively, poor and faraway provinces can be taken with a modest amount of infantry
  • Two new events were added, linked to the capitals of states. One of them alerts you when your capital is under attack, and the other one urges you to take it back, if it is captured
  • UI now only displays resources that correspond to unlocked technologies
  • Improved rendering of big maps, now they look prettier and no longer have problems with icons' display
  • Map loading optimized
  • Improved interface for technology tree and province menu
  • Bug fixes for MacOS version
  • Fixed a bug that prevented saving the game in multiplayer

  • Added scenario for World War II on Euro4 map. It includes a very deliberate rebellion system, along with diversified array of reforms for each country. We suggest you try playing it as different countries to learn the ropes. For example, you can reform the Soviet Union back to the Russian Empire, or do the same with the Third Reich, demaking in back to the Holy Roman Empire. Tread lightly though, due to the aforementioned rebellions: when playing as Spain, for example, there's a risk of Catalonia secessing. Additionally, you can establish Israel - or it will be established anyway, if the Jewish population starts a rebellion in respective region. And vice versa: an Islamic State might be stablished by a bot (or yourself) in the east. Third Reich's concentration camps' prisoners might also start a rebellion, etc., etc.
  • Fixed a bunch of errors causing troubles in multiplayer games. Data transfer optimized
  • Switching speed between maps when starting a new game is doubled, as is the speed of loading a saved game from the main menu
  • Fixed bugs with random music volume level changing, political decisions for Monarchic stats, and other minor bugs

Movement and Monarchy - Update v0.9.11

v0.9.11 Released!


  • New political decisions were added for Monarchy: 'Return of feudalism', 'Return of serfdom', 'Abolish serfdom', 'Borrow from Merchants', 'Pay back the debt to the Merchants' and even 'Expel the Merchants' (so you don't have to pay back the debt). Another new interesting political decision: 'Annex a vassal through marriage'
  • Added a bonus for Communism: increased shooting range for artillery
  • A small element of randomness was added to the battles: now instead of showing the exact amount of troops needed for victory, an icon showing the chance of victory is displayed before the battle
  • The Army movement menu was reworked to be more comprehensive and intuitive. All offensive and defensive buffs are now displayed, so that players can assess their chances for success correctly

  • Pressing 'Alt' + RMB now allows you to move half an army to a selected province without calling for the army movement menu ('Ctrl' + RMB moves the whole army from one province to another)

  • Improved tutorial, with more explaining text; additionally, all technologies required for completing the tutorial are now unlocked from the start
  • If a player has a vassal, the latter generates points that get added to the overall victory rating
  • If an ally frees one of your provinces from enemy forces, it now goes back to you, and not your ally
  • In the Diplomacy menu, a player can now see requirements for points to sign a pact or alliance, and the conditions on which a vassal can start a rebellion
  • If you provide another state with a huge amount of resources for free, the discontent among your population now increases
  • Bots now better handle fighting wars on multiple fronts
  • Various minor bug fixes of UI, bots, and processing battles

v0.9.10 Released!


  • Victory/defeat conditions added to the game. Now the game ends 1) if the player lost 2) after 100 turns have passed 3) after 2 hours in multiplayer, or earlier, if the server admin decides so. Depending on your results, you can achieve Flawless Victory (top-1 by points), Convincing Victory (top-2 or top-3 by points), Unconvincing Victory (top-4 or top-5), Defeat (not in the top), or Crushing Defeat (one of the 3 countries with the lowest score). Points are calculated out on the state of your economy and the number of provinces under your control.
  • If one of your peace treaty conditions is creating a demilitarized zone, the army in the zone does not dissolve, but automatically moves to the provinces it is allowed to be
  • Upon creating a demilitarized zone, the participating parties are allowed to one honest mistake: if an army enters the demilitarized zone, it will not be counted as a violation of the pact. Remaining in the zone or entering it again will be regarded as a violation of the terms
  • Hiring armies during a turn is now guaranteed to be processed before processing the movement of troops
  • You can now press 'Ctrl' + right mouse button to order the whole army in the province to move to a selected province
  • Improved hotkey processing, and added tooltips for hotkeys upon hovering interface elements
  • Improved zooming in and out
  • Performance optimization

  • After editing a map, you can now use the '/patch_scenario' command in-game to adapt existing scenario to the newer version of the map and avoid compatibility issues
  • Certain parts of the map can now be toggled on and off in the map editor, so they wouldn't distract you and/or cause performance issues

  • An uprising can now happen only as a result of the event with a strike

Why maps matter, and how they work? - Warnament Dev Update #12

The first question from the title is easy to answer: Warnament is a grand strategy game, which means that players spend most of the time looking at the map. So it not only has to be pretty but also easy to design and fun to interact with. Today we'll talk about how maps are structured in Warnament, but first here's a quick summary of what the heck is going on - for our new readers.

The Most Important Things About Warnament


When's the release? We're aiming to go into Early Access in 2024 What happens now? You can play Warnament's closed beta for as much as $0.99. It is updated bi-monthly, and includes map editor & multiplayer mode, along with the access to the devs eyes & ears And what if I don't? There's also a free demo here on Steam. It doesn't have all the features but also gets regular updates, including some new content. Map Editor Begins


To anticipate the importance of the map editor, keep in mind that we started working on it before Warnament was contemplated: we knew we'd start working on a new strategy game eventually, which implies having an editor from the start. We wanted to make it easy to handle, but also responsive to a designer's actions. Unlike heavyweight grand strategies like Hearts of Iron, there are no rivers, height differences, or terrain types. But at the same time, the editor allows much flexibility when it comes to provinces and their borders.

How maps work in Warnament


In Warnament, each map contains provinces, and each province is a polygon with multiple vertices. You can scale and move vertices, as seen in real-life industrial map-drawing tools, which allows you to shape the provinces on your map any way you like. Sometimes it's more than one polygon per province - in case you want to create an enclave outside of a country's main territory, which is very easy in Warnament's map editor.
When you're done marking borders, click the Export button - and the map is ready to be loaded in the game. At this point, it is not yet fully playable (though you're welcome to try) - it needs a scenario, in which you will also set colors for all the participating countries, among other things. The map editor was designed in a way to be as much friendly to player-generated content as possible, so handling custom maps is very easy. You can just copy the .map file in Warnament folder, and see it in the list of other maps when you launch the game. Each map file also contains data of each pixel on the screen corresponding to a certain province, which decreases response time upon clicking a great deal. Combined together, the scenario editor and map editor provide tools for creating beautiful things:

The final touch


But before a map is loaded, a few things will happen to make it shine! Each map consists of three layers: polygons, inland effect texture, and coast effect texture. Here they are, taken apart for this picture:

We also use shaders as a final touch. A shader is basically an instruction for your graphic card to draw an element. In Warnament, we use shaders to:
  • Show occupied provinces
  • Add black and white effect
  • Add antialiasing
  • Add gradient and noise effect to a territory
  • Draw water

  • Interface has become more interactive in general. Provinces are highlighted, when a player hovers a mouse over them, and other interface elements play sounds when being interacted with

  • Democracy political institution was reworked and has a different set of bonuses for unlocking new stages now
  • A unique political decision has been added for Communism. Now communists can create armored artillery capable of dealing big damage in close combat!
  • Optimized performance during navigation on the map and the overall speed of processing turns
  • New sliders in the settings menu allow you to set up the volume levels for sound and music independently

War & Peace - Update v0.9.6


Hey rulers! This time, we took a short break from our ongoing epic interface redesign. And quickly it turned out, that there were so many ideas that were just waiting for the right moment to pop out of our heads, and get implemented into the game. That moment is today! The new features introduced with this update, provide you with more instruments for both military and diplomatic ways of dealing with geopolitical problems!

  • The game was rebalanced a great deal, to even the chances between smaller and bigger countries. Each next unit of machinery now costs a little more, and the most advanced technology levels are harder to unlock
  • Resource spawning on the map was rebalanced too, to evade a situation when a bigger country is so packed with resources, that it has no motivation to get into wars or trading
  • Added defense lines that build on the borders with other countries to get a huge defense bonus. However, an enemy can go around them and strike you anyway, so be careful (hey, who said, 'Maginot'?!)
  • New technology: Firethrower Tanks! They make regular Tanks' animation firethrower-y, and provide HP boost to them
  • Update political institutions allow Theorcratic states to establish a Holy Order, and Trade Republics can create their own Private Military Companies. These lovely people will require you to provide them a territory, and will fight for you in return
  • A country's vassal now can trade with any country (and not just with their suzerain), and vassals controlled by bots are now capable of starting rebellions in case of bad relationship with their overlord
  • If a player ignores their vassal's call for help, it will make their relationship worse, and vice versa
  • Trading with a vassal provides 50% discount for the suzerain, allowing you to pump resources out of your minions (just like 'good' old times!)
  • Firing from Artillery, Battleship our Aircraft Carrier is now more effective, and has a chance to disable an enemy's machinery, even when dealt damage is less than resistance of an enemy unit. Same fire can destroy defense lines too
  • Calling an ally to join a war now costs 5 Prestige points; if a player is summoned by an ally, a notification will pop up, reminding about honoring their duties
  • Added 4 new music tracks
  • Improved a bunch of animations
  • Updated hints that show on loading screen

  • Political Institutions have gone through a serious revision, namely - Theocracy and Fascism have new political decisions for you to consider. Playing as a fascist ruler, you can instantly recruit several units of Shock Troopers and ban communism (which will, naturally, lead to having a penalty in diplomatic relationships with communist countries). And as a theocrate, you're allowed to ban marriages with people of different faith or casually declare yourself a living god
  • Improved the game module responsible for the music. Never listen to the same tune twice in a row again! Also, the music changes as you switch from the main menu to the game, and vice versa
  • Added an option to assign political institutions to countries in the Scenario Editor, which prevents awkward situations of having a bot plying for the Soviet Union instantly choose Monarchy for political institution
  • New icons on the map: from army moving arrows to buildings
  • Optimized map export and interaction with vertices in the Map Editor (for those of our players, who enjoy creating gargantuan-sized maps)
  • Added a new language: Brazilian Portuguese

The Most Important Things About Warnament


When's the release? We're aiming to go into Early Access by the beginning of 2024 What happens now? You can play Warnament's closed beta for as much as $0.99. It is updated bi-monthly, and includes map editor & multiplayer mode, along with the access to the devs eyes & ears And what if I don't? There's also a free demo here on Steam. It doesn't have all the features but also gets regular updates, including some new content: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1201700/Warnament/ With that aside, let's finally talk about what's new in Warnament! [previewyoutube=miMvb-Zqrf8;full][/previewyoutube] We know it's been a while since our last Dev Update, but the changes we bring you this time are, quite literally, revolutionary! That is: a couple of weeks back we introduced strikes and rebellions, subsequently followed by good old separatism. Typically, things start brewing if you raise the taxes too high. Lowering them is an intuitive solution, but if that doesn't help, there are a bunch of political decisions for you to make and cool down the troublemakers. A couple of especially interesting decisions will be introduced for Fascism real soon (consider it a teaser).
Reacting to events can also influence the overall level of discontent in your domain, so answer wisely! Remember: being left without attention, strikes may turn into full-swing separatist movements. In this case, you'll have to decide whether to let your rebellious provinces declare independence or to go to war with them.
But hey: if your people rise against you, at least you can crush them in style! Our great interface renovation goes on, and will keep us occupied at least until the end of the year. This time we've dramatically improved the window with overall country stats:

Also, the menu of Political Institutions was brought into correspondence with current UI/UX style. It has pretty pictures, too:
If you're participating in out closed beta, you probably noticed a bunch of important improvements in the map editor. For example, we added support for 8192x8192 maps. It will become useful for making large maps with a lot of provinces - like that epic World Map, that we'll add to the game in one of the upcoming updates! We've also added Transform functions: you can scale and move all vertices on a map (useful when you want to adapt the current map to another .png). It will become especially handy in cases when you want to update an older map with a bigger background image.
And as always, we must remind that if you're looking for more awesome user-generated content (or perhaps looking into becoming a map creator yourself), you're always welcome on our very vivid Discord server.

Improved Map Engine - Update v0.8.2


Hi players! You will like this update, especially map creators. I improved the map engine to increase maximum size of a map. There were also a lot of useful changes in the Map Editor.   • Added revolts. If the level of discontent is high in your country, strikes will start happening eventually. If discontent continues to grow, there's a chance for a rebellion to start, and certain provinces may want to secess from your country
  • Rebalanced economics: now the overall economic level of a province has more influence on overall income per turn
  • Color palette changed in the 'After Great War' scenario, also added new reforms for each country
  • Fixed a bug with incorrect display of the list of the scenarios, if a player had several user-created scenarios with the same name on the list
  • Increased the maximum length for a country's name from 32 to 48 symbols
  • Many minor multiplayer-related bugs fixed
  • Performance optimization

[previewyoutube=nqC_hIsLG68;full][/previewyoutube] Oh, what's this video all about? It's just another update on Warnament YouTube channel, which you're totally welcome to subscribe to! There's a new video every week, so come by to find yourself in the thick of the development process! If you're not a video watching type, here's a short summary! We've got an interesting update for the scenario editor: it now allows you to create custom reforms! A reform in Warnament is an event when a country evolves like a pokmon, and becomes something completely different. Like that time France became the French Empire or when some folks established the United States of Europe. Well, now you can create these events on your own!
You can create up to 6 reform for each country, which is convenient because there're 6 political regimes in the game, and you can create an option for one of each.
The latter is completely optional though. For example, on these screenshots you can see the Benelux Federation, which can be formed under any political regime. It does, however, have other condition: to be able to call oneself Benelux Federation, one must control the land of BElgium, NEtherlands, and LUXembourg simulatneously. Because otherwise it would be awkward.

And check out our new interface! The main game screen was completely reformed, which was totally worth it, because you, the players, will be spending 90% of your game time here!

The game looks more consistent now, which shows in (seemingly) small details, too: we have created a special palette for the game map, to avoid random/weird color combinations:
Getting to gameplay changes, bots can now issue ultimatums to you, demanding to stop aggression towards a country or to decrease the amount of your troops, if bots consider it too big. If you do not comply within a certain number of turns, get ready for war:
Warnament is a rather easy to learn kind of game in the given genre, but now we leave no chance to not understand its rules: there's now a tutorial campaign that activates upon first launch of the game. You will have some fun suppressing communist uprisings in Weimar Germany, returning control over the land temporarily known as the Free State of Bottleneck - and learning how to recruit troops, control your armies, and produce artillery on the way!

Up Next


Now that the new palette is ready, we need to introduce it to the existing maps. Existing reforms must be implemented into the new system, and new reforms will be added as well. The plan is to make it so every country has multiple reforms to choose from, which will hopefully increase replayability. We will also keep improving scenario and the map editors in the upcoming week. User-generated content is the fuel of Warnament, and we're so very grateful to our awesome community maps and scenario creators for the awesome job the are doing to entertain fellow players! The Most Important Things About Warnament

(Inter)Face Off


Some heroes do not wear capes. When a game has a great UI, nobody really notices it. But when it's janky & clumsy - it will haunt your players no matter how engaging the gameplay is. Apparently, this was Warnament's case. We decided to solve this problem like big boys: we called a professional designer lady to make things look smart.
There was a lot of very professional communication when we were discussing prototypes, moving objects around in Figma, and incorporating cutting-edge usability ideas into our game. This process is far from being finished - it took us about a month to make the main menu look shiny. But the results are starting to show already:

Oh, and while she was at it, Julia the UI/UX designer suggested a new version of Warnament's logo as well. Here's some more old vs. new content:

Which one do you like more? You're very welcome to join our Discord server, and discuss it with us in person! Next step would be, of course integrating this style into the rest of the game. And while we were at it, we made new covers for these humble developer updates, and for our YouTube videos, too (don't forget to subscribe, if you haven't already): [previewyoutube=hyy8pviHk8g;full][/previewyoutube] And while menus, windows, and video covers were being taken care of by a pro, we could concentrate on making Warnament's gameplay more complex! And thats exactly what we were up to.

Event Management


In Warnament, there are six ideological institutions to choose from, and now that choice matters even more - and choices that your opponents (human or AI) make will influence your experience, too! We have introduced a wide array (6 per each political institution) of new random events, that are specific to the regimes in power in neighboring countries. For example, one of your citizens might start a political scandal by participating in an anti-government rally in a Democratic country next door. Or one of your Communist neighbors might decide to nationalize all business enterprises in their country - including those owned by your citizens. In any case, you get to deal with the consequences.
These events may turn out quite well for you, bringing additional Prestige points, but choose carefully because it's also very possible to ruin your relationship with a neighbor and find yourself in a state of warfare.

Can a Robot Write a Symphony (of War)?


In 2023, it is not uncommon for a human being to be negotiating with an artificial mind. We couldn't stand aside, and now you will have to deal with way more sophisticated computer opponents. From now on, bots rely heavily on relationships with you and other countries, when making decisions. If you're on good terms with someone, they will be more likely to agree to your conditions when negotiating. And vice versa: what started as a petty squabble, might turn into a holocaust.
There are many factors that influence your relationships with other countries. Some of them cannot be easily changed: for example, if someone's in conflict with your country's ideology. But if you've got some Prestige points to spend, you can refer to the new feature, allowing your diplomats to oil the wheels of international affairs.
By the way, sometimes being enemies with someone might be a good thing, too: you see, AI opponents don't like it when a country attacks another country, so declaring a war results in a strong relationship penalty. So you might try and provoke someone (like, by using good old insults - as seen in real life) to start shooting at your troops, so you could convince other rulers to fight on your side.

Up Next


Next month we will continue adding more depth to the gameplay: for example, by adding mini-goals to motivate the players, especially in the early stages of the game. Another thing we're working on is ultimatums: an option to demand something from another country and automatically start a war if the conditions are not met in a timely manner. New Diplomatic Tools: Trading And Making Friends



You can now exchange goods, machinery, and even entire provinces with other countries. Needless to say, that adds a new level of depth: if you happen to be a small contry but a filthy rich one, you can become a major player on the global politics arena. Of course, if a country applied sanctions on you, they won't deal with you. If you have a beef with one of your neighbours, it will also make trading difficult, at the very least. But since the last update you can use finesse and start gradually improving your relationships with other countries with the means of diplomacy. Gameplay-wise it means spending some prestige points, so make sure you have plenty.
Last but not least, you will now be recieving answers to your proposals instantly, without having to wait for the next term. It works in the multiplayer, too: the other player will see your offer and be able to answer it immediately. But thread lightly, because that means wars can be declared instantly, too. So make sure you have your troops ready in case things go south.

Shock & Artillery



Speaking of troops, we've got a couple of newcomers! Enter Shock Troops: they're like your regular infantry but stronger and resistant to chemical warfare. To convert regular troops to these elite swashbucklers, you'll have to construct a new building called Training Camp. [previewyoutube=3dRN2CvRbgo;full][/previewyoutube] Our other fighter is the almighty Artillery: it can strike your enemies from afar but there's a payoff - cannons do not have much durability and are therefore vulnerable to all kinds of attacks. Artillery comes with it's own new building, too: the Machine Factory.
Oh, and don't forget: with these guys around, Steel becomes one of the most precious resources out there. Need to improve a building? Steel. Build a fleet? Steel! Artillery, tanks, training Shock Infantry? It's steel, still. Steel!

Technical Improvements: Better, Faster, Stronger


In multiplayer, the players are now receiving not only scenario data from the server but the map data, too. That means, if you run a server, you're free to upload any map to it, and any player will be able to join a session, regardless of whether they have this map or not! We also made a bunch of smaller but still very important improvements regarding map loading speed optimization, and the map editor. Might not sound so epic but our players are loving it:
Speaking of the players: if you want more content for Warnament (scenarios, maps etc.) then our Discord server is the place to go. We have a frightfully active community of awesome players over there.

Up Next: Of AI's and UI's


In the next couple of weeks we will be working of completely redesigning the game interface: we're consulting with a dedicated UI/UX designer, so it's serious business, folks! Real deal. After that, bots will get their own reboot. We'll teach them to create their own game events, so they could decide to help you in a war (if they like you enough), or insult and attack you (if they don't). Warnament is coming into its full glory with every update, so bear with us: good times are ahead!

Warnament Dev Update #7: A Demo to Remember

It is as deep as classic games in the genre, but only takes minutes to get into action. You can play out historic scenarios or create your own: take control of a nation on a global map and take it to glory by taking over territories and achieving military, technical, cultural, or political advantage. It is a spiritual successor to Cold Path, another game with a similar philosophy. Seriously, we think it'd be mighty fine if you played our demo, and then play it some more. We got Luxembourg, remember? Okay, we didn't want to come off as pushy, but we hope you can understand: you (normally) only release a demo once, so it's hard for us to think/talk about anything else. So we're gonna talk about how we are improving the demo, so you could play a better demo!
As you might know, there's also a closed beta (which you can totally become a part of) happening alongside with the demo. It's particularly cool because it gives a dev a lot of feedback to improve the game upon. One of the little tweaks we introduced is that now you must have an excel of at least 400 troops (or 1 tank) to annex a province. So if there's a unit of 9000 enemy troops in the area, you'd need over 9000 soldiers of your own, 9400+, to be precise.
But there's good news, too! Chemical weaponry has been reinforced and now destroys up to 40% of enemy's infantry: the exact number depends on whether there's a Fortress in the province and the type of landscape:
Or you can just include the mass production of tanks into your country's political philosophy. Because seriously, why select Totalitarism of Revanchism when you can get yourself an army of roaring death machines:
Some work has been done over the Technology Tree, too. Naturally, we've had to cut off some not-so-polished features for the demo, leaving only those we were sure about:
We'd like our demo players to really feel comfortable, so we continue working on the interface of the Tech Tree, even after the demo has been put out on Steam. For example, now you can see all the benefits of a technology you're about to put your country's brightest scientific minds to:
In other news: we've been improving the AI of the bots for some time now, and they're becoming more witty by day. They're full of surprises: while we were making screenshots for this piece, one of them has reformed Italy into the good ol Roman Empire:
Perhaps, there's still much work to do to make the bots inherit a more modern political mindframe, but at least they're fun to interact with!
