Wrath: Aeon of Ruin Hotfix 1.1.2. Is Out Now!

Hello everyone, Surprise, surprise! Right after the first post-launch update, we already have a hotfix to solve some issues that you reported. Most importantly, the monster count is now fixed and we've replaced the lightbulbs in E3M1, so the lighting issues are now gone. Full Change Log can be found below. WRATH: Aeon of Ruin Post-Launch Patch is Now Live!

Hello everyone, We have great news for you! It has been two weeks since Wrath: Aeon of Ruin has left Early Access, and the reactions so far have been really positive. We would like to thank you, our beloved community, for supporting the game and for playing the hell out of it! That being said, you did encounter some issues; but thanks to your diligent bug-reporting, we have been able to fix a lot of them - we are happy to announce that the first post-launch patch is now live. Please, keep reporting any problems you encounter, so we can squash all the pesky bugs that may still be skittering around. WRATH: Aeon of Ruin is Out of Early Access Now!

Greetings Outlander, The time has come for you to finally complete your journey - heed the call of the Shepherd of Wayward Souls and defeat the Guardians of the Old World! Your quest will take you on a sprawling adventure through the many corrupted temples, mystic forests, and decaying ruins linked by each of the three hub worlds in WRATH: Aeon of Ruin. In short: the game is now out of Early Access and its full content is available to you. To celebrate this joyous occasion, let's watch the new trailer we've prepared, featuring music by the legendary Sakis Tolis (of Rotting Christ). WRATH: Developer Update - The Final Stretch

Greetings Outlander, Its been a while since our last update when we announced that WRATH: Aeon of Ruin will be leaving Early Access on February 27, 2024, so it is time again to share a quick update to welcome the beginning of the new year!

The Finishing Touches of Development


We have made the most of the time spent since our final bi-weekly update. The entire team has really come together, and we couldnt be more proud of them. Suffice it to say, we are extremely excited for the impending launch in February and for you to see all of the new content. The core gameplay and features for the PC version of WRATH are now complete. Our final step before we are truly ready for release is localizationwhich is already well under wayand is the final milestone left before we wrap up.

Glimpses of the New Content



Some of the things were most excited for you to experience in the final release are the more fantastical and mystical elements of the game. And we have an abundance of new content coming with the release of the 1.0. Here are a few highlights:
  • Fully-Implemented Story
WRATH's narrative approach aims to be concise and unobtrusive, encouraging you to explore the various environments and learn the history of The Old World.
  • 3 Bosses
Each of the three episodes is accompanied by a new hub, and at the end of each new hub is a boss of various types.
  • 3 New Weapons - meaning 9 in total
  • 4 New Enemies - 15 in total
  • 2 New Sigils - 3 in total
  • 5 New Artifacts - 10 in total

In addition, we have of course done significant polish on the pre-existing content as well as adding new things. For example, we have updated the opening segment of the game; within that segment you meet a new NPC, The Shepherd of Wayward Souls.
The Shepherd accompanies the Outlander on their journey to save the imprisoned guardian of The Old World. Weve also included some notes that can be found as you explore and find secrets. These notes are left over from the inhabitants of The Old World and can be collected, giving bits of context and worldbuilding to WRATHs atmosphere.
Additionally, we have implemented a new tutorial segment at the beginning of the game that serves two purposes: [olist]
  • Better player onboarding, explaining some of the systems and abilities to be found within the game. This is primarily intended for new players, but we think that experienced players will enjoy this as well because:
  • The new introduction serves as the anchor for the narrative and worldbuilding. It will set the stage for players to understand who the Outlander is and why they are on the journey that they are on. [/olist] And of course, we have added many general improvements over the initial early-access release.

    Multiplayer Status


    We have been faced with a hard decision; either we could commit time and resources to working on multiplayer or cut it completely and fully buckle-down on polishing the single-player experience, and improve upon it even more than we originally thought possible before our full release. After careful considerations, we chose the latter and cut multiplayer from the game. And thanks to the extra time and effort weve spent building this world and fleshing out its narrative, the new things we've been working on have manifested in truly intriguing ways that we believe will pleasantly surprise you.

    The Road to Launch


    As we are nearing the full release of WRATH: Aeon of Ruin, we would like to thank you all for your patience and support throughout the tenure of development over these past years, and we look forward to seeing your reaction to the new content.     WRATH bi-weekly update - 8.16.2023

    Greetings Outlander,


    We have some important news to share with you. This upcoming Friday, August the 18th, we will host a livestream of WRATH gameplay - you can watch this on 3D Realms twitch channel, twitch.tv/3DRealms, at 2 PM ET / 20 CEST - again, thats this Friday, August 18. We hope you will join us as we feature some of the new upcoming content. Today will also be the last concurrent biweekly update. As we move towards the end of development, there comes a time where there is not too much to visually share as we are fixing bugs, optimizing the performance, and adding other polishes. Were dedicating all of our attention to wrapping up the game. Over the last two weeks we have been finalizing lighting and texturing on most of the maps. Today well share a detailed room of E3M4, The Crucible of Souls, and a first look at HUB3.

    The Crucible Of Souls


    One of the largest maps in the game, E3M4 - The Crucible Of Souls - is an infernal epic of lava, basalt columns, and imposing architecture. In this area we call the lagoon two bridges of brick and metal arch across the boiling lake below. A lone Symbol patrols the cavern, but other monsters may lurk in ambush

    The Wretched Domain


    The last episode of WRATH begins in HUB3 - The Wretched Domain - a gruesome pit of tortured flesh, bone, stone, and metal. From here the five maps can be reached, their portals hidden in fortresses or caves, for you to complete your quest to cleanse this world.

    WRATH bi-weekly update - 8.2.2023

    Greetings Outlander,


    Over the last two weeks weve been focusing on fixing and adding all of the little details in our maps, while also working on WRATHs Achievement System. Today well share with you the loading screen for E2M3, The Shadow Pantheon, as well as an update on WRATHs Achievements.

    Loading into The Shadow Pantheon


    As we saw in the last biweekly update, The Shadow Pantheon has been receiving its final detail, which means we can bring a scene from the map to life by creating its loading screen. Depicted below is the Red Key Door, the entrance to this temple awaits across an obstacle of pooling acid.

    Integrating Achievements


    We have finished the code for all of WRATHs achievements. The next step is to integrate some map-based achievements into their respective areas, add art, and polish the descriptions. While there is a large assortment of WRATH achievements, here is a small sample of story progression achievements in the menu below:

    WRATH bi-weekly update - 7.19.2023

    Greetings Outlander,


    Over the last two weeks weve been working on more detailing and lighting overall; however, some of the things wed like to focus on for today are the recent modeling and map additions that go into detailing these levels. Today well share with you screenshots from E3M2, The Blood Pits, as well as from E2M3, The Shadow Pantheon.

    Into The Blood Pits


    The Blood Pits is one of the most gruesome locations in all of WRATH, a twisted mix of gothic stone and living flesh. This makes it a mix of map work, and modeling. Here are some shots showing these different elements that shape the maps atmosphere and character as it reaches completion.



    The Shadow Pantheons Gallery


    In the subterranean passages of E2M3 - The Shadow Pantheon - a menagerie of idols in the image of false gods has been raised in stone. The waters of this once-sacred place now flow with corrupted effluent. Witness this desecration in the shots below:

    WRATH bi-weekly update - 7.05.2023

    Greetings Outlander,


    Over the last two weeks weve been continuing with detailing and lighting, as well as new soundpasses, as we make our way through Episode 3. Weve also been adding more interface graphics. Today well share with you screenshots from E3M3, The Rending Chambers, as well as the recent loading screen made for E2M4, Twilight Altars.

    Lighting The Rending Chambers


    An industrial facility corrupted by the enemy, E3M3 is a grim mix of tortured flesh and corroded metal. It has been receiving its final detail and lighting passes, and we have some screenshots here to show you the resultant oppressive atmosphere.


    Loading Screens


    Once again, we have a completed loading screen to show you. This one gives a glimpse of E2M4 - Twilight Altars, a solid and stony, yet technologically advanced, temple complex from the lost civilization of WRATHs world.

    An Update on the WRATH: Aeon of Ruin 1.0 Release Date Greetings Outlander, We would like to use this opportunity to apologize for our lack of communication regarding the full release date of WRATH: Aeon of Ruin. The past year has been extremely difficult for the team; we have managed to reinforce it with some very talented new members however, and as you can see from our regular bi-weekly updates, progress is being made. Even though development is now moving forward at a steady pace, due to those past difficulties, we are behind our original schedule and unable to catch up. We are sorry, but the game will not leave early access in 2023. We know this is a disappointment for all of our fans, and we have been trying our best to make it happen earlier than next year - in the end we could not, not without compromising the quality of the final version of the game. Thank you everyone for your ongoing support.

    WRATH bi-weekly update - 6.21.2023

    Greetings Outlander,


    The last two weeks weve been focusing on moving our remaining maps into the detailing and lighting stages, and continuing UI improvements. Today well share with you some of our additions to the Outlanders Journal, and more Item Pickup Icons.

    Sketching in Outlanders Journal


    The Journal is a place to store information based on the Outlanders findings in the old world. The Outlander records information about the new weapons, enemies, and environments that they discover. Here are some detailed studies of one of the monsters - the Brute - on their way to the pages of the Journal.

    Pickup Icons


    Last time we showed you some of our new pickup icons. Here is a further selection of these little pieces of pixel art. First, we have the complete set of artifact icons, for when the Outlander collects these exotic powerups. From left to right and top to bottom they are: Vicious Animus, Shockwave, Mark of Revelation, Drowners Apparatus, Flask of Rage Cruel Aegis, Orb of Deflection, Life Siphon, Void Grenade, Confounding Attar.
    Below is an assortment of other item icons, including: keys, health, ammunition, and some stranger things. The cats eye on the bottom row is an update of the icon shown when a secret is discovered, and it matches with the bizarre metal symbol on the top row of artifacts.

    WRATH bi-weekly update - 6.7.2023

    Greetings Outlander,


    The last two weeks weve been continuing with adding setpieces to the game. Out of those additions, we would like to share the Relic Circles, which each hub level possesses, as well as new pickup icons that are in the works.

    The Relic Circles


    This sinister organic henge awaits the Outlander in HUB3, The Wretched Domain.
    And below shows the Relic Circle appearing in the fragmented desert of HUB2, The Eventide Wastes.
    As with HUB1, these ceremonial circles are where the Outlander must bring the relics from each level in the episode. Only then can they open a portal to this dying worlds guardians.

    Pickup Icons


    Weve been adding more pickup icons. First are the Relics that the Outlander collects at the end of each level and deposits into the Relic Circles shown above. The next image shows some of the in-progress weapon pickup icons.

    Aside from the relic circles, icons, and other fixes, tweaks, and polish, here is a look at some of the things weve worked on the last two weeks: LEVELS
    • E3M2 - The Blood Pits - is receiving a gameplay pass and detail pass

    • E3M4 - Crucible of Souls - the industrial areas has been enhanced with more features such as chains and cages
    • BOSS2 - Detailing the arena
    • BOSS3 - Optimizing the arena, particularly for navigation

    WRATH bi-weekly update - 5.24.2023

    Greetings Outlander,


    The last two weeks weve been focusing on the atmosphere of Episode 3. This involves creating skyboxes, props, and adding details to create the character of the environment. Weve also been making lots of other subtle changes to improve upon the gameplay experience.

    As Outlander makes their way further into the world they find themselves surrounded by the ruin and corruption of a dying, twisted, environment. These are some of the skyboxes that are currently being worked on and integrated into the third episode:

    WRATH bi-weekly update - 5.11.2023

    Greetings Outlander,


    These last two weeks there has been much fixing and finishing of various content. For some levels, detailing and gameplay configuring are ongoing, but others have received their final polish and are complete. Supporting elements - like sound effects, interface graphics, decoration and environment effects - are being added to fill out the experience of the levels.

    Loading into E2


    One of the places that can make a visual impact outside of the actual world of Wrath is the loading screens for each level. Two more of these are now finished, and give some idea of the atmosphere and grandeur waiting to be discovered in Episode 2.

    The Thorn Wall


    Weve been adding some set dressing pieces, especially to Episode 3. Here is a feature added to the start of E3M5 - The Red Throne. Like something out of a dark fairytale, thorned tendrils are spreading across the basalt facade of this imposing installation. Now that most of the levels are near completion, decor like this is an important way for us to add visual impact to Wrath, and finalize the character of a level.

    WRATH bi-weekly update - 4.26.2023

    Greetings Outlander,


    These last two weeks there has been a focus on playtesting some of our levels as we prepare to have a batch of them finalized. In addition, we have been adding finishing touches with prop models, and reworking the UI.

    Decorating E2 and E3


    As mentioned in our previous update, The Watchtowers was formerly a place for the scholars of this world. Weve been crafting an orrery that will hang in one of the tower atriums, and it is currently in its last stages of texturing. You can see some of the in-progress proof-of-concepts and updates below:

    Weve also been adding statues to Episode 3, with some of them depicting the image of a character that some may know as The Shepherd of Wayward Souls:

    UI Improvements


    As mentioned briefly in the previous update, we have been conducting a UI overhaul. There are more changes to come, in order to get the new graphics added (cursor, quantity, detail, etc), but heres a look at one of the bigger changes: the Artifact Inventory. Old Artifact Menu:

    Some other quality-of-life changes have included cleaning up the item messages, such as announcing the quantity of a pickup rather than flooding multiple messages to the HUD. Old:

    • E2M1 - The Crystal Dunes - has been thoroughly playtested, and all that remains is balancing items, particularly in secrets, and some bugfixing
    • E3M1 - Boundary Of The Living - has also been playtested, with a few entity and aesthetic changes made as a result.
    • BOSS3 map has a finalized layout, with detailing and item placement underway
    ENEMIES
    • Boss 3 has had several expressive, creepy, and sinister animations added, as well as another form of attack
    • The AI for the Widow was improved with a small but significant bugfix
    • The Heretic now drops the correct number of Fangs
    PROPS & TEXTURES
    • The Episode 3 Relic circle is now being modeled
    • A new model has been made for Fang Spitter ammunition, so the visual corresponds with the amount collected
    • A few more industrial textures have been made for E3M3. Blood and iron!

    WRATH bi-weekly update - 4.12.2023

    Greetings Outlander, As we refine and detail the rest of the game, Episode 2 is giving way to Episode 3 as our focus. Lets take a look at two of the work-in-progress maps from that episode:

    Wander the temples along the Boundary of the Living


    Leaving behind the deserts of the Eventide Wastes, you find yourself traveling deeper into the corrupted realm. Surreal and somber, E3M1 is fully textured, as detail and lighting continue to be adjusted.


    Descend into the The Rending Chambers


    Corroded metal lies in uncomfortable proximity to blood and tortured flesh. A prison of machinery, E3M3 has new texturing, plus a gameplay pass, and is now being playtested.

    Aside from E3M1, E3M3 and other fixes, tweaks, and polish, here is a look at some of the things weve worked on the last two weeks: LEVELS
    • E3M4 - The Crucible of Souls - adding more terrain to The Lagoon, and secrets
    • HUB2 - The Eventide Wastes - extensive terrain has been sculpted and added
    • HUB3 - The Wretched Domain - is fully blocked out, with item pass completed
    • BOSS3 map has an expanded layout, with the second phase of combat in prototype
    ENEMIES
    • Boss 3s animations are being further blocked out and tested, with a particularly dramatic animation for one of his powers
    • The Brute movement has been refined to cope better with unusual architecture
    PROPS & TEXTURES
    • The corpse light now has a companion fixture; the corpse throne
    • Concepts for the E3 Relic Circle are underway
    • The UI has been overhauled, with a new inventory design, and a smoother presentation of text and graphics
    OTHER
    • The Mace does significantly more damage, as an outcome of playtesting
    • The Mace also now has its own ammunition
    • Rock gib particles no longer float in water (!) and additional particle effects make the splashes more satisfying
