2.4.2 Incremental Update

IMPORTANT: Updating Hedon requires a clean reinstall - this will cause your saves to become incompatible with the new version. You can revert to an older version of the game from Properties - Betas.

2024 is here. And so is 2.4.2

It looks like yet another new year has caught me working on Hedon, although it's been quite some time since it shifted away from being my main project. Oh yes, I'm still working on a new game, but that doesn't mean I can no longer process player feedback and apply it in order to further improve Hedon :^)

Can you spot the differences?

As I have hinted on the platform formerly known as 'Twitter' a while ago, the more I keep working on Hedon, the smaller the adjustments become. The image above is a good example, showing how I switched a pair of windows to transparent bars which allow the player to see the 'treasure' inside the house, and thus have a better mental image of what they're in for as a reward to the exploration. A small gesture that may have a significant impact on the player's planning ability.
Another case is the elevator in the starting map. So far it has always been out of power from the get go, but as of 2.4.2, it will feature a small interaction which allows the player to see the Power Core explode and stop the moving platform. This small event will hopefully better 'cache' the elevator in the player's mind and allow them to make a better connection to it when finding the spare Power Core.
The combat encounters are still receiving polish. Here's an example in which I have increased the number of Conscripts spawning in when first encountering the Crushbow, making for a far better demonstration of what the primary fire is capable of.

Incremental changes

Last but not least, update 2.4.2 restores some of the dignity of certain monsters that have been habitually nerfed in previous updates. I've noticed that some of them feel a bit too tepid now, so I will be slowly increasing their aggression levels until I find the sweet spot. For a list of all changes, go ahead and check out the full changelog. So yeah, let me know how the changes work out! What are you waiting for, to battle! - ZanDev

2.4.1 Extra Clues Update

IMPORTANT: Updating Hedon requires a clean reinstall - this will cause your saves to become incompatible with the new version. You can revert to an older version of the game from Properties - Betas.

Realms Deep 2023

Before anything, I'd like to remind you that Realms Deep 2023 is just around the corner! This time around, expect to find more than just boomer shooters, as the event has expanded to broader horizons of indie games. In celebration of the event I have released a new update for Hedon, and I will also be joining the massive RD2023 SALE which will be up from September 28th (7pm CEST) to October 3rd (7pm CEST)!

New Graphic Clues

I feel like Bloodrite has a few maps and areas that overstay their welcome. As you might know, I have a strong position against dumbing things down, so it was quite a challenge to figure out how I can streamline these areas by adding things rather than removing them.
Enter graphic clues, similar to the ones added in Crystal Heart, which are intended to provide the player with additional information about the map without directly spoon feeding it. There are some other misc. changes, such as Warlocks no longer being immune to Time Freeze. As usual, you can find the list of changes in the Changelog. Let me know how you like the additions, and hey - why not drop a review here on Steam too? :^) Anyway, enjoy Realms Deep and the new update, and good demon hunting! - ZanDev

2.4.0 Quality of Life Update

IMPORTANT: Updating Hedon requires a clean reinstall - this will cause your saves to become incompatible with the new version. If you are sure you want to perform the update, then remove your game folder from your Steam library and re-download it. Make sure to also delete any hedon-username.ini type files from the game folder after you finish downloading, as they can get carried over by Steam cloud and mess with the update's default options and settings.

Quality of Life Improvements

At long last, Hedon now has a custom movement code, stepping away from the classic Doom one which was too slippery to allow for precision platforming. It will be on by default, but can be reverted from Options - Customize Controls, and you can even bind a key to switch between movement styles instantly! On top of that, the new movement introduces terrain-based footstep sounds. Their volume can be adjusted from Options - Sound Options.
Another long awaited feature was to allow the player to reduce or entirely turn off camera shake resulted from using weapons. The weapon camera shake intensity can be found in Options - Display Options.
One of the unfortunate realities of Hedon's development is that the graphics were drawn on a particular laptop screen which turned out to have its brightness and saturation turned up, thus making things look prettier than they were. Now that I have moved on to use a proper truecolor screen, I have noticed that Hedon looks a lot more drab and hard to read in reality. While this cannot be fully fixed, I made some changes and adjustments to address it. On top of that, I there are new sprites, textures and decorations, predominantly used in Crystal Heart in order to improve the level of detail to better match that of Bloodrite. There are a few other fixes and improvements. To view all the changes, access the Full Changelog here. Enjoy the update, and don't hesitate to send your feedback! - ZanDev

2.3.0 Update | REALMS DEEP 2022 | News From the Front

IMPORTANT: Updating Hedon requires a clean reinstall - this will cause your saves to become incompatible with the new version. If you are sure you want to perform the update, then perform a clean reinstall for it to apply properly.

REALMS DEEP 2022 is here!

It's been a year since the last edition of Realms Deep, and now it's back with numerous indie titles - boomer shooters, imsims and all that good stuff! And speaking of boomer shooters and imsims, I have been hard at work this year, splitting my development time between Hedon and my next project, which I will hopefully be able to reveal more about next year. Until then, make sure to follow me on Twitter to stay up to date!

Update 2.3.0

Update 2.3.0 introduces a few new fun things, such as the Chick critter, which was initially intended for a later content release, but I figured I'd drop it as a teaser. The new update also fixes a few bugs and improves several other things, such as weapon graphics and certain parts of the level design. There's also a couple new areas to explore, and other areas have received some additional texture improvements. Full changelog can be found HERE.

Merch Store is Finally Here!

Your pleas have yet again be answered! You can finally show what a Hedon fanatic you are with a ton of merch ranging from t-shirts and prints to mouse pads and phone cases. Why Redbubble? Because it allows for a good variety of merch and it has the benefit of bigger logistics. Even if I won't get a significant cut out of this, I think at the end of the day it's what works best for people who want to own Hedon merchandise. Let me know if you have any feedback. :^) IMPORTANT! Make sure you check the preview of whatever item you want to buy. I can only provide Redbubble with general positioning of graphics, and you may notice that certain items (like phone cases) have some pretty bad graphic positioning. One more thing - if you decide to get any Hedon swag, make sure to tag me on Twitter and I'll share it!

Album Cover Art is Out!

Thicc Edition owners rejoice! The soundtrack now has an official cover art, which is also available as a gorgeous 4K wallpaper. If you perform the update, the Extra Thicc Goodies should update with it as well.

Hedon + Incision Bundle

And of course, tell your friends about it. :^) As always, thanks for all the support, Hedon has been steadily growing with more and more people joining the community! Feel free to tag along:

Hedon - Extra Thicc Edition Release!

IMPORTANT: Updating Hedon will cause your saves to become incompatible with the new version. If you are sure you want to perform the update, then perform a clean reinstall for it to apply properly.
To all of those who wanted a way to throw money my way following Bloodrite's release - your pleas have been answered! You can now upgrade your Hedon to the Extra Thicc edition, which includes not only the soundtrack as high quality mp3, but also a thicc special HUD to help you immerse into that old school RPG atmosphere. NOTE: The soundtrack can be found as a .zip inside the game installation folder in your Steam directory after you apply the DLC/upgrade (ideally by doing a clean reinstall of the game).

2.2.0 is out!

Whether you're running the Thicc Edition or not, 2.2.0 brings more polishing and improvements, such as several new areas to the first maps of Crystal Heart which provide alternative paths for reaching/pointing towards important areas. You can find the complete changelog HERE. Thanks again for all the support, Hedon has been growing a lot lately! Update 2.1.0 Releases Soon!

2.1.0 IS OUT IN 1-2 DAYS FROM NOW!

It's been a crazy month and I'd like to thank you all for the feedback and the crazy positive reception of Hedon Bloodrite! I believe I have finally addressed all the reported bugs, so it's time for a patch! 2.1.0 is coming very soon, it should be out before this Wednesday, 09:00 GMT.

IMPORTANT

As always, updating GZDoom causes your saved games to break, so you have about a couple of days from now to back your game out of Steam or turn auto updating off. Unfortunately, I no longer have the option to set the game to not auto update from the developer end. Are you reading this too late and your saves are already broken? Do not despair! You can restore progress by starting a new game and selecting the testing hub, where you can choose any map to play and get proper gear for it!

UPDATE SUMMARY

- General engine-related fixes; - Optimization for the final map, which includes breaking it down into 2 separate maps. - Minor bug and typo fixes for many maps; - Adjustments and balancing to monsters and weapons; Read the full changelog HERE.

Hedon 2 Releases on August 30 as Free Update

[previewyoutube=Urn7VKNYC5A;full][/previewyoutube]

Only Two Weeks Remain...

Thanks to everyone who dropped by the Realms Deep 2021 event and cheered for Hedon! Good news, the release is set for August 30!

And it's a free update!

Yep, you read it right. The whole game will be added to the same .exe as the first, in the form of an update! The base price will be changed from 9.99$ to 16.99$, so get it while it's still cheap!

IMPORTANT

Hedon will be updated to run on GZDoom 4.6.0. This might impact performance on older machines, and will most definitely break your old saved games! So make a backup of your current game folder, because this update will be set to apply automatically.

While you wait...

Come join our Guilded server to have a chat and hang out with fellow orc mommy abs enjoyers. I'm planning to fire it up with Hedon 2's release, and direct the future memetic operations from here :^)

Hedon 2 Releasing This Summer!

Release Date - Summer 2021

For the past year I've been pretty much working non-stop on Hedon's sequel, so things moved faster than expected. Bloodrite is set to release in the second half of summer 2021, depending on how long I want to extend with beta testing. The game will be playable from the same .exe as Hedon, since file size more than allows it, but I'm not sure whether it will be added to the main game with a price increase or as a separate download. Wait until release :^)

16 Hours of Hand-Crafted Singleplayer Experience

Hedon Bloodrite is pretty much Hedon on steroids, with larger levels, larger arsenal and bestiary, more world building and story and generally more... Hedon.

They messed up your home. It's your turn to mess theirs!

You'll be on the offensive now. Join the Iron Division remnants in a last ditch attempt to save the world from an imminent demonic invasion.

The world expands...

Get ready to explore the universe of Hedon further and learn more about the places and people who inhabit the mysterious underground world.

A touch of RPG

You will be able to talk to various characters and complete secondary objectives and hidden quests. Sometimes, your actions will affect the course of the game in subtle ways.

Lose yourself in the layers of the underworld

As a true successor, Bloodrite will expand on Hedon's already large levels, keeping up the visual variety and strong atmosphere. Creativity, wits and exploration will never go unrewarded. In addition to that, you will be able to go back and worth between certain levels, having the freedom to approach them in multiple ways.

Kick ass harder

You get a weapon that shoots 2100 bullets a minute. Kicking ass is the only option.

What is the fate of the underworld? Will Zan make the ultimate sacrifice to defeat the demons? Do male orcs exist?

These and many other questions will find their answer in the sequel. The best part is that you won't have to wait more than three months from now to find out! Until then, stay thirsty... for Bloodrite!

1.6.0 Update - News From the Front

NOTE: Remember that updating has to be done manually through a clean reinstallation of Hedon, as the new content will break your save files. You should skip this update unless you want to start a new playthrough.

News From the Front

It's been a rough year, but Hedon is still going strong! The sequel you're all waiting for is nearly half-way finished, and thanks to my wonderful Patreon supporters who have been with me during this terrible pandemic, I can dedicate my full time to developing it!
And since waiting sucks, I have decided to release some of the content I'm working on so that you guys can have some fun! Just hit the in-game Testing Hub and check out the new weapons, items and allies inside, bearing in mind they are in a beta shape, and might change in the future. Your feedback is also welcome!
On top of this I have also made many small improvements to the existing maps, and fixed a few bugs for certain weapons and enemies. Most importantly, however, I have updated Akhzul's soundtrack with a remastered and improved version. And after your requests, he has finally uploaded it on his Bandcamp where you can now own it and support him!

1.6.0 Summary

- Many map, monster and weapon fixes and improvements; - Updated the old Akhzul soundtrack with a remastered version; - Added beta versions of the Paingun, Stormstaff and Bracer of the Revenant (can be obtained only in Testing Hub or via the give all/give weapons/give ammo cheat commands); - Added beta versions of the Iron Division Fixer and Earth Mother. They can only be recruited inside the Testing Hub.

Quad Damage Bundle!

QUAD DAMAGE BUNDLE - https://store.steampowered.com/bundle/15144/Quad_Damage_Bundle/ A short while ago we reached out to a couple of dev-friends that launched well received, gore-filled, fps games. The reason? To discuss the possibility of launching a new bundle. One that would collect all of our games and offer it at the best possible price to all the fans of the genre. Five large email threads, tens of discord messages and some really cool concept art and brainstorming later we arrived at what you see before your eyes: the Quad Damage Bundle featuring the barbaric Elderborn, the half-orcish Hedon, the mysterious Nightmare Reaper and brooding Project Warlock. Each game is a passion project by the creator, or a small handful of creators that managed to pour their heart and soul into lines of blood-sprayed and dismembered code. Do check them out. This bundle is both about the chance to get all of these games at a reasonable price, and to discover titles you might not have been familiar with. So, without further ado: introducing four games to satiate your thirst for brutal, high-quality, no-nonsense fps. Pry the secret of eternal youth from a cursed city as a powerful barbarian in Elderborn. Take control of a pissed off Half-Orc in her quest to repel a cultist invasion in Hedon. Solve the mystery of the nameless heroine in a mental asylum in Nightmare Reaper. Face the minions of hell as a magic-wielding, gun-toting loner in Project Warlock. Elderborn, Hedon, Nightmare Reaper and Project Warlock combine to bring you: - 97 power-ups & skills ! - 101 weapons & spells !! - 107 levels and stages !!! - 120 enemies & bosses !!!! Please remember: you only pay for the games you dont yet own here. Also: for the best deal you might want to buy Quad Damage Bundle between 01.06-08.06!

1.5.2 Update - Testing Hub Arena

NOTE: Remember that updating has to be done manually, as it can break your save files. You should skip this update unless you want to start a new playthrough. [previewyoutube=3O-5opCkAmU;full][/previewyoutube]

Testing Hub Features

The hub can be selected by starting a new game. Here are some of the features provided: - Level select feature, which provides the proper weapons and gear, as well as appropriate spoiler warnings. Playing levels this way allows the player to take on extra gear, as well as companions, regardless of difficulty; - Monster arena which allows the player to either summon enemies and test out weapons and consumables on them, or set up fights between two monster teams. A set of switches allows for the manual customization of the layout in real time; - The arena also allows for a player vs. monsters endless mode scenario, complete with automatic arena layout randomization; - There's also a permanent Patreon gallery and a jukebox that can play every soundtrack of the game so far.

Other Changes

- Weapon improvements and balancing, including new visual effects for the Fragfire Gun and Crushbow alt fires; - Consumable adjustments involving duration, icon and even an effect change for the Choker of the Beast; - Various map fixes and improvements, most notably the reduction of platforming difficulty in some areas coupled with a further increased air control. See the full changelog here.

Let the games begin!

If it doesn't work right away, try again after a few hours. If the issue persists you should contact GOG Support. Thanks! Have fun!

1.5.0 Is Out! And a New Episode is in Development

ATTENTION! You must manually perform the update. As usual, it comes with a newer version of the GZDoom Engine, as well as tweaks for each and every map, which causes old saves to become incompatible. For this reason, auto-updating is off and must be performed manually, preferably via a clean reinstall. Also in line with Hedon's other patches, this is aimed at new players and players who want to start fresh runs. If you're in the middle of some progress, you have little reason to perform this update until you're done with your current playthrough. Alternatively, you can manually select levels and restore your gear. See how HERE.
1.5.0 IS HERE The update that changes Hedon's starting experience is finally out! Enjoy a whole new short starting area coming with a much more organic introduction to the mechanics and lore of the game, as well as some proper head-on action! You can find the changelog HERE. This took a while to make, primarily because it required me to first work on assets that were destined for the second chapter of the game. Second chapter? Yep, it's officially in development, thanks to my amazing Patreon supporters! That's where I will be posting sneak peeks, closed beta builds and updates from now on, so keep an eye out for it. Also don't forget that I now have a Twitter account, where I will also post news from time to time.
Thanks a lot for playing and for showing interest in Hedon this far! Stay tuned!

Hedon Update 1.4.0 - Go Bearzerk!

NOTE: In order to update Hedon, you will have to perform a clean reinstall of the game. Saved games do not work across different versions (which is why auto-updating is turned off) so keep this in mind before updating. You can restore your progress manually via console commands, read about it here.
A new big update is here, bringing lots of improvements as well as the fresh Bearzerk difficulty - which radically changes Hedon's combat! On top of this, Trading Cards, Badges, Emoticons and Backgrounds are finally here too!
Here's a quick overview of this update: - Hedon now runs on a GZDoom 4.1.3 engine fork "hGZDoom" with few quality of life improvements and Hedon-specific setting menus (otherwise it's 99.999% GZDoom); - New Bearzerk difficulty that removes access to guns and instead gives the player new melee weapons for the ultimate close combat challenge! - Various map improvements and adjustments, including further optimization for Map10; - Improved graphics, animations and sounds for all the weapons; - New Quick Kick attack; - New blood cloud gore effects and various other enemy improvements and changes. See the full changelog here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_trNqNNGRU&feature=youtu.be

So what are you waiting for? Update, and get hacking and slashing! (And remember, you need to do a clean reinstall for it to update properly!)

Version 1.3.2 is Up

WARNING: This update is meant for new players or players who want to start a fresh run. It mostly changes Map01 to make it more accessible based on the feedback I've received after this first release week. Remember that updating the game ruins your previous saved games, so think twice before you do it (also, the next big update will contain new stuff to warrant a replay, so wait until then if you've already completed Map01). General changelog & how to update here.

Thanks to everyone who has given feedback, reviews and bug reports so far! Here's what this update does more specifically:

Map01: - Tutorial tips overhaul to make them more compact and on point; - Item placement modification to reduce certain confusion; - Broken switch to the Mining Outpost has been moved to the elevator in front, to make it easier to remember and see when backtracking; - Added few new props to act as visual landmarks in the cave; - The door next to the Iron Key has been modified to look less like something the key would open, and reduce confusion again; - The path between the Water Cave and Dura's Office is now open from the get go - this will allow the player to loop back if they decide to explore after obtaining the Power Core, and reduce the apparent importance of the waterfall gate's crystal device; - After obtaining the second Power Crystal, Crawlers break the shutter and enter the Mining Outpost, signalling the way towards the exit;

Map02: - Turned off the chandelier in the Library to create more darkness and left a single light by the scribe table to put more visual focus on it; - Removed some light crystals from the path leading up to the Magic Ward, replacing it with more purple light that makes it visible from further away and draws attention to it as an important location; - Reduced the light from the Guard Office and put a stronger light in the cell with the wall crack to make it draw more attention; Map03: - Moved some lights around the Iron Key room to better draw the player's sight to it as they pass by; Map05: - Moved and added some lights to point out important spots; - The Librarian's corpse now has a blood trail pointing towards the hidden book switch; Map06: - Added a trick to skip the "cinematic" part for people who want subsequent playthroughs without going through the story again - see more details here.

➣ It's an oldschool/boomercore game not by just looks and engine, but by gameplay.

➣ Gory, fast paced shooting, a solid arsenal of weapons and magic items.

➣ Sprawling levels that offer a degree of freedom and don't hold the player's hand. Exploring, hunting secrets, backtracking, patience and having to figure out what to do next is key. Monsters and pickups are hand-placed and vary according to the difficulty you play on.

➣ Original story packed with lots of lore and doubled by a permeating atmosphere.

➣ Original soundtrack ranging from tense to serene ambient, spiced up with bursts of metal. Also, did I mention the legendary Alexander Brandon? If you enjoyed the Unreal and Deus Ex soundtracks, you're in for a treat!

➣ Thousands of hours of work put into an original concept, digitally hand-drawn graphics (textures, sprites, frame by frame animations etc.), scripting, sound effects and level design, all by a one man dev team aiming to create a unique game with a unique atmosphere.

➣ Six to eight hours of good 'ol singleplayer action with five difficulties including Brutalizing, which changes the gameplay to allow interesting second playthroughs (different fights & pick-ups, companions etc.).

➣ It's very light on storage (under 300mb) and well optimized. It's also portable so no DRM and no online ties either - you buy it, it's yours!

My aim is to research classic game design and refresh the valuable bits we've lost in an experience that ultimately rewards the player through learning and investment rather than through mechanically administered gratification.

Hedon is an oldschool game, and that's pretty much enough of a description. You will be dropped in a hostile world that has its own workings, characters and intrigues, and you will be expected to fend for yourself. The build up is slow and steady, the story is consistent, the combat is fast paced and ruthless. You will sometimes find yourself lost in a non linear level design with various aesthetics (forest, caves, forge, barracks, snowy mountain etc.) where exploration and learning by yourself is the key to improve.

You may find that Hedon takes a certain amount of inspiration from games such as Unreal, Blood, Thief, Arx Fatalis, Serious Sam etc. but nonetheless aims to be original at all times.

You play as Zan (any similarity with the creator's username is a pure coincidence), a half Orc - half Demon warrior who wakes up in a caved in tunnel with no memory of how she ended up there. The first episode will focus on our hero's descent into a strange underground world which is threatened by the sudden attack of a massive Cultist force.
There are certain races and factions populating the world of Hedon.

The Iron Division
A faction of amazon-like Orcs and Goblins, the Iron Division are the keepers Hedon's greatest secret - the crystal technology. Various magical crystals sprawl across the underground, providing energy, heat, oxygen and often forming entire biomes around them. Combining this power with crafting and the ancient art of magic, the Iron Division has founded a whole new civilization within their mountain stronghold known as Valc.

The Cultists
Fallen to sin, the raving husks of what were once human now worship various figures of the Underworld. Little can be done to cull their addiction to pain and suffering. Little but a spray of frag fire or an explosive bolt that is...

The Demons
Chaotic Demons dwell in the deepest parts of Hedon, lashing out at the weaker minds of the inhabitants of the Overworld. Along the ages, they have subdued entire towns to become their cultist slaves and feed their endless hunger through pain and suffering. Demons only care about feeding, and they will stop at nothing to do so.

The Earthborn
Ancient dwellers of the underground, Minotaurs and Dwarves have built their own civilizations, ever clenched in warfare with the Demons spawning from below. However, their great cities and heritage were lost hundreds of years after their inevitable defeat in front of Hell's armies, and now they have been scattered and forced to live in small clans and towns.

iamfailtacular - story collaboration/world building, brainstorming

Akhzul - Hedon's OST dedicated composer. A one guitar man band.

Alexander Brandon - The man himself. If you enjoyed the soundtracks of Deus Ex or Unreal, then you're in for a few pleasant surprises. I bought few licenses for some of his personal tracks (and other songs that didn't make it in Deus Ex/Unreal) and fit them into Hedon!

Breathelast - A band of underground sharks who pitched in with instrumental tracks of their songs. Also one of my favorite bands ever.

Methadone Skies - Another solid band from the underground, guilty of creating dreamlike musical atmosphere.

Shivaxi & Xenofish - 5 Michelin Star chef and his cool friend who made an awesome remix for Alexander Brandon's Underworld.
