PREDULE available now!

MESSAGE INCOMING

Samurai,

Our intel shows that Metacorp has upgraded their software with the PRELUDE protocol. This means that Beyond Sunset now starts with a prologue chapter, and Karl Vincents spectacular synthwave soundtrack a.k.a. SYNTHTRACK is now available for purchasing.

Episode 0: New Life is an upgraded version of the much-praised demo episode, now with improved mechanics, rebalancing, and some minor quality-of-life changes.

For you, this episode means answers. You can learn what happened before Raven dropped Lucy at that street corner. Before the massacre started. Youll see where Lucy came from. Youll understand who she isat least to a degree. More answers will come later.

Take this opportunity, but beware. If youre expecting a cakewalk just because this is a prelude, youre going to be surprised.

And make sure that synthwave sound stays with you at all time.

Stay safe,

MAJOR Major Update!

Citizens of Sunset City, more good changes have arrived! The previous Minor Major Update made the ground for this one

And this one is MAJOR Major.

Do remember that, as usual with those updates, your saves will no longer work. If you want to continue your current gameplay, change your game branch to Latest. Otherwise, create a new game and have fun!

So. Whats in this game overhaul?

 • E1M1 overhaul - update progression track with changes to level layouts for easier navigation;
 • E1 - addition of 7 secrets in existing maps;
 • E2 - addition of 10 secrets in existing maps;
 • E1 - addition of new timed challenge level;
 • E2 - addition of new timed challenge level;
 • E2 - addition of new timed challenge level;
 • E3 - the ability to repair turrets;
 • E3 - remove reliance on hacking puzzles, limit to 3 puzzles;
 • Major overhaul to every single combat arena in the game - reducing reliance on large numbers of enemies and multiple waves in favor of streamlined 1 - 2 wave format per fight;
 • Update of the enemy roster to balance the diverse enemy types;
 • Increasing the effectiveness of weapons against certain enemy types to encourage more weapon switching;
 • Significantly reducing reliance on the powerkill mechanic, decoupling it from health and ammo management;
 • Making the Katana-reflect more consistent and effective.

The combat overhaul is truly an overhaul. We've reworked every single fight in the game to meet some criteria:
 • "no filler" fights don't drag on with endless waves. All fights have been streamlined to 2 wave maximums;
 • more incidental combat using enemy placement to better guide player movement;
 • better escalation in challenge level, fights have clear goals.

Ready for a COMPLETELY NEW playthrough?

In Sunset City resistance is futile, so

Lets play!

We have a request Steam Awards Nominations

Heya folks!

We've been out for only two weeks and the Steam Awards are already here!

And you know, we do have an absolute banger of a soundtrack, courtesy of the synthwave legend Karl Vincent. If you need a reminder, here is a sample:

[previewyoutube=gwH8coiHNuU;full][/previewyoutube]
And, of course, Karl has more Beyond Sunset tracks posted on his YouTube channel.

When we started working on the game, we knew we wanted an original soundtrack, made just for us. We didn't want to use ready-made tracks. We posted an announcement on the synthwave fan page saying we're looking for a composer who would like to make some music for us... And we were stunned when Karl Vincent himself responded!

So that's how it started. How it's going, you can hear while playing Beyond Sunset. The music is tailored especially for our game, and it adds a unique cyberpunk atmosphere. There is no better music and no better composer we could have asked for!

So, we do have a request. We believe Karl Vincent totally deserves a reward for his soundtrack. Please nominate us!

So there are people we need to thank

Hello people!

It is, of course, possible to make and release a game alone But its extremely hard! Luckily for us, we had help starting with all the people in our team, and our publisher. However, we also had some help, sometimes unexpected, from all around!

Every video and stream, every retweet and repost, every shoutout to us and a review written in the media and on Steam, all of that is an immense help to indie devs such as us, and were extremely grateful. No exaggeration here.

So! There are some people who went above and beyond, and these people we want to thank from the bottom of our hearts. Here they are!

[previewyoutube=0Lt-iiTyS0I;full][/previewyoutube]

Of course, there are others, and we thank you too. And big thanks to all of you who bought the game and left a review on Steam! Without all of you, we wouldnt be where we are today.

Thanks!

Walkthrough Episode 3

And here's the last part!
WALKTHROUGH Episode 3
> This episode brings a twist to the gameplay: it's much more open and dynamic and you will need to rely
on your combat and tactical skills. First, interact with Raven to give him your weapons and open a path deeper
in the level.

> Find Yuri. After completing the conversation you will be ambushed. Escape by jumping down the opening..

> Interact with Raven and you will be given your weapons back. Progress further into the level,
clear all enemies from the map.

> Start interacting with turrets. Capture them by accessing the network through them and completing
the mini-games. Your objective in these mini-games is to make the arrow go into the gold ray of light.

> After capturing all 7 turrets, a new terminal will show on the map. Interact with it to start the fight sequence.

> Defence sequence will start where you have to protect the core integrity from incoming waves of enemies
[total of 6 waves]. Collect turret gizmos dropped from enemies to rebuild the turrets when they get destroyed
- they will help you deal with the enemies.

> After successfully defending the core from 6 waves of enemies the chapter ends.
Congrats, youve beaten the Early Access chapters! More are to come.

Player's Guide - Part 1

Starting Tips
>> ENHANCED MOVEMENT_
As a street samurai, you have better mobility than an average Sunset City citizen.
Combine your abilities in combat situations to overcome even the toughest challenges.
>> THE WAY OF THE SWORD_
Your main and most important weapon is KATANA. You can get it on the streets of Sunset City. The sword will not only help you deal with enemies, but also replenish your health or protect yourself from incoming fire.

ATTACK

DEFLECT BULLETS

EXECUTE POWERKILL

 • Instakill
 • Ammo
 • Health
>> NOT EVERYTHING WANTS TO KILL YOU_
Not every situation is a combat scenario.
[You should not kill everything on your way]

NPCs will give you information & side missions. You may also encounter traders with valuable goods.

Infobots will help you find your way around Sunset City.

Use computer terminals to read
the latest news and hack into security systems.
>> BECOME MORE THAN A HUMAN_
Use interactive Machines to save your progress and improve your weapons and yourself.

Interact with a Saving Machine to save your progress. Progress is also saved automatically upon entering a new area.

Use Upgrade Machines for ability and weapon improvements.
>> GOT LOST? GET UNLOST_
Sunset City is vast and you need to find your way around it.

Interact with Infobots and NPCs to get clues and directions.
>> ENEMIES AND PICKUPS_
Fallen enemies will drop valuable resources: ammo, health, and money.

Use dismembered hands
of high-ranked enemies to access closed areas via a fingerprints scanner.
Fill up the Powerkill meter and use it to get an instant refill of ammo and health from a fallen enemy.
>> GAME MODES_
After finishing the introductory Training Simulation, you can choose the difficulty level.
[CHOOSE WISELY. This cannot be changed later in the game.]

>NOVICE
Enjoy the story and the world. Dont die too often.

>AVERAGE
A balanced and reasonable challenge. This is how the game was meant to be played.

>ADVANCED
You will die a lot. But it is beatable. For hardcore shooter fans.
>> ENJOY YOUR GAME_
It matters that players express their opinion, regardless of what it is. Why?
It helps us make the game better, learn what we do right and what we should improve.
It tells Steam that our game is worth having an opinion about. This means it works on some emotional level and is worth recommending to other players.
It tells publishers and investors that players are invested in this type of game. So if theres another person or a team with a similar project, it gives them a chance as well. This is how we got our shot.

If you play, express yourself on Steam. Youll be supporting not just us, but anyone wholl come after us.

We heard that there will be PRIZES!

The keys will be for games from the Movie Games portfolio, including Drug Dealer Simulator, Gas Station Simulator, Alaskan Road Truckers, Mythbusters, or Fire Commander. More info: https://store.steampowered.com/publisher/moviegamessa

Beyond Sunset Is Out!

Hey there!

Were finally here! Its an exciting and touching moment for all of us. We can finally share the fruit of years of our work.

Thank you for supporting us, have fun, and after you play - please leave your Steam review. We want (and need!) to know what you think to improve what we can and deliver even better episodes later on.

Oh yeah, about later on - heres the plan!

 • This Early Access version contains 3 out of 5 planned episodes.
 • It should take you around 4 to 8 hours to complete, depending on your skills.
 • New episodes will be published in approx. 3-month intervals.
 • Early Access is $9.99, the full price after completion will be $19.99
 • You wont have to buy it again. Early Access will unlock the full version.
 • Since its $9.99 and 10% off, youre saving more than 50% on the full game. :)

We reckoned this would be a fair way to reward our Early Access supporters for helping us make the game the best it can be.
Regarding updates - MUST KNOW
Were using the GZDoom engine, which means that every update in the future may disable your past saves. This is what the engine does.

To mitigate the problem, weve made it possible to start from any episode you want. So even if you cant use your old save, you can hop in from Episode 2 or 3.

Also, we will publish the updates on a separate Steam branch. This way you will be able to continue on your old save but without the update. Well post a guide to switching branches when an update comes out.
Walkthrough available!
Beyond Sunset isnt just a shooter. Its also an RPG with storytelling, dialogue, side missions, and puzzles.

In case you need help with progressing, weve prepared an official walkthrough. Check it out here on Steam or here, in the Players Guide. But do it only if you must! We want to you try and overcome all the challenges yourself.:)
See a bug? Help us squash it!
Finally, if you see a bug, you can help us by letting us know what it is, where it is, and what your PC specs are. Post in our Bug Reports Thread on Steam, ideally attaching a screenshot or a video to help us reproduce the problem.

We wish you all the fun in the world with Beyond Sunset. Were open to suggestions and critique. You can talk with us here or on our Discord.

See ya in Sunset City!

You have absolutely no idea how ecstatic we get when we see people using our game as an inspiration, be it fanarts of the characters or remixed soundtrack. It makes us positively giddy!

So, when we got tipped off that a young and very talented lad has remixed the music so close to the premiere, we decided to use it for one of our minitrailers. Here it is!

What to do before Beyond Sunset is out?

The premiere of Beyond Sunset is approaching fast, and if youre growing impatient (like weve heard some people do), we made a list of things for you to do to prepare!

Of course, you dont actually *have to* do any of it to enjoy Beyond Sunset but it wont hurt either!
So, what do we have in mind?
The most obvious thing will be playing Doom. Its the OG game and ours is made using the same (tho improved on) engine. If you want to get a hang of the most basic of GZDoom technology, its THE game to play!

There are also a few other games worth playing as a way of preparing for the release of Beyond Sunset (and simply for the pleasure of playing a good game). These include Deus Ex, Cultic, Hedon Bloodrite, and more!

Actually, go check out our open letter all the games which signed the letter we can truly recommend.
But what if you dont want to play games at the moment? Well, there are also other things to do:
• Read Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson some aspects of our game were inspired by the plot;
 • Read also the wonderful and colorful cyberpunk comics by Moebius;
 • Listen to the music composed by Karl Vincent, the synthwave master who made the soundtrack for our game!
 • Watch some movies like Johnny Mnemonic, The Matrix, Blade Runner (including the sequel), Automata, or Ghost in the Shell.

So, here it is!

And what will you be doing to prepare for Beyond Sunset?

Happy Retroween!

Hello everyone!

Its one of the favourite days on the year Halloween! So, as were fans ourselves, we want to wish you a happy Retroween!

Its Halloween but in Beyond Sunset, so its retro, get it? Eh, I should probably stick to making games. Anyway, have a great time!

Did we just kill the creator of God of War?

So Something happened. Actually, it happened some time ago but we really wanted to share it with you at this time of the year.

So we might have a life on our conscience. Or many lives, really. Just dont call the police, we can explain!

Some time ago David Jaffe, the father and creator of God of War, decided to stream himself playing Beyond Sunset. And apparently, our game killed him. Multiple times, in fact. Theres even video evidence posted on YouTube.

[previewyoutube=8sD650GKgN4;full][/previewyoutube]

So, our sincere condolences to David Jaffe for dying in Beyond Sunset. Please dont report us for murder!

(We hope you know its all an elaborate joke.)

Happy Spooktober!

How would other games look in Beyond Sunset?

Weve just announced a community graffiti challenge, and that got us thinking. How would other games look like if they were happening in the Beyond Sunset world?

Well, our publisher has a few cool titles on their account so we had a look at these through our pixelated glasses And they look really cool! Take a look:
Alaskan Road Truckers:

Drug Dealer Simulator 2:

Lust from Beyond:
Perhaps they will inspire you a bit to create your own Beyond Sunset inspired art. They might even end up in the game!

Cheers!

The contest runs Oct 26 - Nov 10. Make sure youve read the T&C, and when you do, send us your creations at fanart@moviegames.pl. Remember to send us two versions of your art, one in PSD and one in PNG. The graffiti should be no larger than 64x64 pixels.

Happy creating!

The music of Beyond Sunset

Do you know what gives a game a totally unique atmosphere?

Yes, its the story.

The graphics too, yep.

But whats in my mind right now is music. And we have a smashing soundtrack in Beyond Sunset!

When we started thinking about making the game we knew that we needed music that enhances the gameplay. Its not enough to simply buy the rights to ready pieces and try to fit them in in the story. We needed music composed for Beyond Sunset and Beyond Sunset only.

So theres little story here, honestly: I made a post on a synthwave fanpage asking if there is anyone interested in helping a small dev team with music for their new game. And weve got a ton of answers! BUT. Weve also got a message from someone we did not expect to see in that thread: Karl Vincent.

Yes, THE Karl Vincent, an absolute synthwave legend wrote to us that he wants to make a soundtrack for Beyond Sunset. And we were beyond excited, obviously! No pun intended.

So as we continued working on our game, and Karl started composing a fantastic soundtrack youll be able to hear in the game (and you probably already heard bits of it in the demo).

[previewyoutube=gwH8coiHNuU;full][/previewyoutube]
Give the man a like on YouTube and leave a follow because he totally deserves it. And thanks to his music, Beyond Sunset is that much of a better game.

[previewyoutube=tIJonQKwOno;full][/previewyoutube]
Thanks!

Lets talk about the episodes!

Hi there! Excited about the Early Access? We are!

So, we said it many times that each episode will be a little different from the others. There will be different mechanics present, different abilities to utilize, and so on. But what does it mean, exactly?

Well, lets take a look!

Prologue and Episode 1 act much like an introduction to the game. I mean, duh. The players will be introduced to all the core mechanics, many of which are rather new if your only experience with the genre is the good old Doom.

These mechanics include:

 • Jumping;
 • Dashing;
 • Sliding;

And more. Your main weapons are the guns (such as a pistol, shotgun or rifle) and your trusty katana. Your katana will also have a sort of ultimate ability, where you will heal yourself for every damage you deal.

In Episode 1 youll obviously start the main story but youll also get introduced to side quests and the mechanic of upgrading your abilities or equipment.

Episode 2 will expand a lot more on the RPG aspect of the game. Here you will experience the true consequences of your actions, as the story will prompt you to make a very important decision Its a moment that will alter the story depending on your choice.

There will also be new and different challenges and puzzles to solve.

[previewyoutube=h0DalykEs4E;full][/previewyoutube]

Episode 3 is a typical tower defense where you will have to survive and protect against waves of enemies. This episode will also introduce a brand new mechanic something we like to call a magic hand

The hand is basically a new type of (secondary) weapon which grants you new powerful abilities to utilise in combat against the ever-increasing numbers of enemies.

[previewyoutube=9IGQaukKom0;full][/previewyoutube]

Which ability are you looking forward to the most?

[ 2023-10-10 15:59:34 CET ] [ Original post ]

Why retro?

So, why is the game retro? Because its a love letter from a bunch of Doom modders who decided to make their own game.

Honestly. Beyond Sunset is an amazing shooter game with fleshed-out narrative and RPG elements. Were very proud of how it shapes up. But the first thing all the people notice is the graphics of a game. And ours is pixelated.

Of course, this is a result of us making the game in the original GZDoom engine. We started our dev journey as a group of modders with a huge portfolio of Doom mods. So when we started making our own game, we chose the engine we felt most comfortable with. Is it the best engine there is? Absolutely not. Was it the best decision at the time? Yup.

So thats why Beyond Sunset looks the way it looks. We love it regardless!

Remember that Beyond Sunset is coming in Early Access on November 8, 2023!

You asked, we answered!

Hi there!

So, weve held an AMA session on Reddit, we also collected questions that popped up here and on our social media. And because there were so many good ones, we decided to get the best questions in one place for everyone to read!

If you wanna browse through the whole AMA, check out our reddit thread, Discord server, and social media (Twitter).

Ready for some bonus info?

Q: When is the official release date?
A: November 8th!

Q1: So I've seen that the project started as a TTRPG. What was it inspired by mechanically, and what did it play like?
A1: It was a GURPs campaign. I hosted the original campaign for some friends back in 2016. At the time, I was interested in the idea of creating an "urban crawl". Sort of a hexcrawl open-world hybrid type-thing. The idea was to mimick the hexcrawls of yore but in an urban environment. The campaign I ran was pretty short, I only ran it for a few months before my players found a satisfactory end for the game. It was overly ambitious to try to cook up an entire setting for the campaign from scratch, so I decided to take my notes and turn it into a source book. I ended up licensing the EABA role-playing system for the sourcebook. This was a mistake because EABA is a total nightmare.

And here are the absolute garbage rules if you're even more curious:

Q2: Is there a plan to maybe pick up the TTRPG concept again?
A2: Not right now.

Q: What were the key inspirations for the project and how did it come to be?
A: In 2015 I got a job across the country from where I was living, so I listened to the book "Snow Crash" while moving from Denver to Philadelphia. I found the book really captivating.
Sunset draws a lot of inspiration from "Snow Crash"
Star Wars is also a big influence on the game, and I think it's pretty easy to see that in the visual design

Q: Whats your favourite idea that had to be cut?
A: We originally planned to have 6 episodes, episode 3 was going to be a Mad Max-style wasteland. We ended up dropping this because it would have been a lot of work and didn't really serve to advance the plot of the game

Q: I believe you've said Sunset was developed in GZDOOM because it's what you were most familiar with but do you have any regrets about choosing to make the game in that engine over more modern ones? Do you feel it made for a better/worse game overall? Was there anything you absolutely couldn't do that you wanted to while working with a ~30 year old engine?
A: I have a mixed mind about this, but the short of it is that I have spent a lot of time adding features to Beyond Sunset that are considered industry standard for most game engines. Stuff like navigation meshes, behaviors trees, menu systems, etc. Lots of nuts-and-bolts stuff. I have become a pretty capable programmer with a much deeper understanding of some otherwise difficult computer-science concepts for sure. So, I don't regret having to do a lot of this stuff myself. The flip side is that throughout development, it's been a constant struggle against the limitations of the engine. I can't speak to how this affected the overall quality of the game, I don't know what sunset would look like I had migrated to Unity. There's a bunch of little gzdoom-isms in Sunset that I overlook, but I think general audiences who are unfamiliar with gzdoom might find them off-putting. In hindsight, using GZDoom created a lot of limitations that I would rather not have had to work around.
TL;DR: If I make another game with the same ambitious scope as Sunset, it will not be in Gzdoom. I have another gzdoom side project on the backburner that's a lot less ambitious than Sunset and I think better suited for that engine.

Q1: Do you plan on releasing the UDB config file for user maps?
A1: Uh, yes, we definitely have a very real UDB config and are not still building the game as though it were a Doom mod.
Q2: Ha, in that case, how many errors does your UDB throw up when you open a map? At one point, RF had like over a hundred
A2: Several of hundred.

Q: I don't know if this question was answered yet, but where there any cool extra cosmetics added to the game for weapons?
A: We don't have any cosmetic modifications for the weapons. We're mostly focused on keepin our weapon roster as small as possible and keeping the guns focused on utility first. if we do end up making any cosmetic changes, they'll probably be fairly basic, like color swaps
that said. we have like a gazillion upgrades for them

Q: Will the game be divided in levels like classic Doom, or will it be more open? Or maybe have a hub area?
A: The game has pretty large non-linear levels that run across multiple maps. I would compare it to Hexen.

Q: What I've seen of the game is definitely impressive. Did it push GZDoom to its limits technically, or is it well within the engine's bounds? Best of luck on the game!
A: Thanks! One of our design goals was to ensure the game has Vanilla GZDoom support. We made no engine modifications to ensure that the game will remain playable with new GZDoom features well into the future.

Q: I just got recommended this, so I don't know much about the game, but I wanted to say it looks neat and I hope you guys are having fun making it. I guess my question is, why the Doom engine, just for the style?
A: Style and comfort. Ive been making doom mods for 20 years, its what I know how to do the best.

Q: What are the pros and cons of using GZDoom as an engine compared to other popular engines? How easy is it to learn?
A: Pros: very quick prototyping, easy-to-learn mapping tools.
Cons: basically everything else.

Q: How many chapters or episodes will the final game have?
A: We have 5 planned at this time. Originally we planned for 6. We may bring back the lost episode as DLC in the future.

Q: Will the game have accurate mouse control, haven't played many GZDoom games, but i remember some having inconsistencies with the x and y axis. Also will the game have QoL stuff like fov, head bobbing... etc
A: The mouse control is the stock gzdoom mouse control. Freelook is supported and the sensitivity can be seasoned to taste.

Q: What is your preferred approach to storytelling in boomer shooters? I'm mostly thinking on a scale like from Doom 2016 to the original doom, with Ultrakill somewhere in the middle. I've seen some of how you approach story in your own game, and I could assume your game reflects that, but I am also interested in your personal approach to gameplay vs story in this genre.
A: Ive taken the approach of letting the story play out through environmental storytelling and interactions with non-player characters. Theres a lot to discover in the game world that helps reveal the full story. I like to reward curious players with deeper lore.

Q: Console release?
A: Heya! This is Rin from Movie Games, the publisher. Were currently researching options for porting the game. No promises yet but were certainly looking into it!

Q: How does your game stand out from the boomer shooters of the past few years? The list is long and thanks to awesome devs like you it keeps getting longer!
A: Beyond Sunset has a more fleshed-out game world than most retro shooters. I see Sunset as a vehicle for its story.

Q: This looks so much fun! Just added it to my Steam Wishlist. How big is your team? And how long did it take to make the game?
A: 3 Devs, it's taken about 2 years so far.

Q: What were the main inspirations for the setting/aesthetics? I really like it
A: Im a big fan of synthwave. I wanted to make a synthwave boomer shooter.

Q: What game was your introduction to Boomer Shooters?
A: Doom 95

If theres still something you wish to know, simply drop us a message!

Stay tuned people!

Whos the game for?

Hi there!

As the Early Access is coming closer and closer, weve decided to make a very serious guide on who should play Beyond Sunset and who should avoid it.

So, who should play Beyond Sunset?

 • Retro Shooter Fans that one is obvious, no? If boomer shooters are your jam, you need to play this one too!
 • Synthwave fans we have an absolute banger of music composed exclusively for us by the synthwave legend Karl Vincent! If you like these rhythms, you need to play the game to hear them.
 • Cyberpunkers Beyond Sunset is a cyberpunk retro shooter: youre gonna see that theme everywhere, so get playing (when it comes out)!
 • Hardcore gamers and speedrunners our game can be hard, we know it well! But if you like a challenge, its definitely for you. And if you make it your lifes mission to speedrun games and make new records, knock yourselves out!
 • RPG fans Beyond Sunset is full of story and plot twists. And thats not all: curious gamers exploring the levels will be rewarded with additional pieces of lore. So, its a game for you!

And who should avoid Beyond Sunset?

 • Casual gamers If you prefer chill games, perhaps Beyond Sunset is not for you. Though on the other hand, you can talk with a dog or explore the game looking for easter eggs and clues about the story
 • I-cant-jump-to-save-my-life people If you just cant jump in any game youve ever played, youll have a hard time playing our game. But maybe that means you SHOULD play it! Its a good practice, after all. If you learn to jump here youll never have problems with it again.
 • People who like to laugh at bad games well, if you like playing bad games to joke about them later, bad news. You wont find much of that in Beyond Sunset.
 • People who dont have the time to play if you are constantly busy, this is totally not a game for you. Youre going to get sucked in and we cant be held responsible for sleepless nights.

TL;DR

Everyone should play Beyond Sunset!

Episode 2 Initialized... Log in

Hi All!

Our game has an episodic structure, like most classic shooters, and every episode plays (and looks, and feels) a bit different. Episode 2 is titled Hostile Takeover! And we have a brand new, super fresh and crispy teaser just for the occasion.

Just as a reminder, as we've mentioned a few posts back, E2 takes place in a technological megastructure. It's more abstract and we designed it to function as a living and breathing organism, to make it not only more interesting for the player but to add more variety to the gameplay.

We can't wait when you'll be able to dive into it!

We also would like to wholeheartedly thank you all for playing the demo during the Steam's Next Fest. It was so amazing to see so many of you enjoying it!

Game? Retro. AI? Modernized

Hi all!

Beyond Sunset is a retro game at core, yes, but it cant play like a retro game. Today, simplified AI behavior just wouldnt fly. Enemies cant stumble around half-randomly, with their only objective being looking for you. This stumbling is something you can notice easily in the original Doom. We wanted to avoid it. So what did we do?
We focused on changing the pathfinding and in general, on letting our enemies make decisions.
Their choices are made via a behavior tree: a branching path of actions that an actor can take, resulting from each other. Its a standard thing in gaming, but not in retro games, and not in games based on the Doom engine. We believe that we are the first to implement Behavior Trees in GZDoom.

Why is it important? Not just because the effect is visible: our enemies are smarter, react to your actions instead of following a simple pattern. Also, for us, their actions are much easier to program. We use a visual editor to create their branching behavioral paths. This makes creating their personalities much, much more convenient. See how it looks:
As a result, you can experience much more exciting (and vertical) combat scenarios than in older Doom-based games.
We also use these trees to create the AI for non-combatants so that we can add life to our game world. Not everyone is your enemy, not everyone is there to kill. This design concept was first used in the underrated gem Strife many years ago, but we hope to take it to the next level.

If youre a modder or a GZDoom game creator, heres something important for you: well make our behavior trees open source very soon. Its one of the best things about Doom and GZDoom: we can share our knowledge and findings, and help each other create better, more amazing games!

Wishlist and follow us for more Beyond Sunset and GZDoom goodness.

Characters.png What about these sprites?

As an RPG game, Beyond Sunset is ripe with NPCs. Its time you meet some of them, no? Let us introduce you to Balthazar, an administrator at MetaCorp. Hes a competent guy but he can be quite a pain in the butt and his short temper is infamous.

The in-game characters are made in pixel art (inspired by the works of Josan Gonzales) but they all start as a painted draft. Thanks to that all sprites are faithful to the art you will see just as the pixel art of Lucy looks just like the hero art from Steam.

Here is how Balthazar was made:

[previewyoutube=W5ZsWNHMe0Q;full][/previewyoutube]

Lucy and Balthazar are only two of many characters that will appear in the game. Do you want to see the others?

Have you ever entertained the thought that a game never ends up exactly as planned? Design and development are iterative processes, and this means that ideas change.

I have an example for you. Its a small change that significantly impacts the way you perceive your gaming experience.

Heres an SCPD (Sunset City Police Department) officer, one of your enemies, as we initially designed him. He has a white-and-blue uniform and generally isnt that far from a riot police officer you might see in real life.

And here he is after a couple of tweaks

He also comes in two flavors, the second one being this:

We changed his colors to what we think feels more cyberpunky and less contemporary. His shoulder pads are massive, and in his larger iteration, his melee animation has a trail to make it more punchy. This new takes some inspiration from the music video for Billy Idols song Shock to the System, check it out!

All of the above results in a look thats more futuristic and aggressive. Despite the fact that this enemys behavior hasnt changed, youll (hopefully) THINK that hes more dangerous. And that will translate to more exciting encounters.

Keep this in mind if you played the demo. The full game will bring a lot of surprises!

Episode 2 is complete(ish) // Infodump.log

{
Print(s:"Its been a while since we last updated you about our progress. Lets make up for it, shall we?");
}
Episode 2 is almost done! Whats Episode 2, you ask?
If you know old shooters, you know a lot of them have an episodic structure within a single game. Like Doom started with Knee-Deep in the Dead, and Duke Nukem 3D with L.A. Meltdown, remember?

This is what youll see when you start our game

Beyond Sunset is similar in this regard: we also have episodes that share the setting. The difference is that we actually tell a story through them, instead of simply presenting differently-themed map packs. Basically, in Beyond Sunset, episodes work like acts.
Each episode tells a segment of the story in a new location and introduces a twist to the gameplay.
E2 takes place in a technological megastructure thats designed to function almost as a living organism. This makes it less cozy and familiar than the streets of Sunset City, but we feel that it adds nice variety and a break after exploring the dirty, Yakuza-infested avenues.
Despite the environment being more abstract, it was designed with a purpose and backstory.
In every level we make, we try to justify why the things you see are there in the first place. We feel that any game is more immersive if the surroundings have an actual purpose in their designers mind.

For example, we have a part thats based on the real-life Hadron Collider. But for us, this is the system that powers the entire place.

Apart from it, a lot of what youll see in E2 is meant to resemble Ancient Egyptian architecture. Additionally, the three main sections of the building use their own color pattern and an individual motif based on a geometrical shape. This adds a unique look to each of the sections and lets us guide you through them easily without any objective markers.
The different visual elements blend nicely and create an eerie, cold, alien environment thats in stark contrast to the city streets.
E2 also shakes up the way you play the game as the space gets wider and allows us to throw more enemies at you. Or faster enemies. Or tougher enemies. Or all at the same time!

Heres one acquaintance youll make

As for the gameplay, I mentioned that we want each Episode to introduce a twist. This is something that should make Beyond Sunset stand out among other retro shooters. But its a huge topic to cover, so lets talk about it some other time.

Thanks for reading! If you made it this far, consider adding our game to your wishlist.

What if San Francisco was destroyed 60 years ago?

Hello!

Time to share some more Beyond Sunset lore! Do you know that our Sunset City is basically San Francisco?

In 1968, San Francisco has been completely destroyed by a massive earthquake people started calling The Big One. But humans adapt fast and on the ruins, a new high-tech city was built. This new highly modern city is Sunset City. Later on, the MetaCorp was founded and the MetaComputer was created and the rest you will find out for yourselves *wink wink*

In our world, San Francisco lies on an active fault line and the whole area is extremely prone to earthquakes. The Big One is a predicted earthquake that geologists expect will happen in the next hundred years. It's not without precedent either, in 1911 San Francisco was devastated by the biggest earthquake in Californias history. Lets hope it wont happen too soon.

If you look closely, you can see some similarities between San Francisco and Sunset City. For example, the West Sunset Mall in-game is based on the Ray Bradbury building from Blade Runner (and Ray Bradbury was a great sci-fi writer, btw.).

Weve also tried to replicate the climate of San Francisco as best as we could in GZDoom. San Franciscos bay area is well-known for its iconic rolling fog every morning and we captured it here:

What else would you like to know more about?

We have a publisher! Say hello to Movie Games

Hi All!

You might have noticed a small change in the Publisher field on our Steam page. WE HAVE A PUBLISHER! Its Movie Games, and were very happy to be working with them. Heres what this means, and why we partnered with them.

1. What this means for the game and the Patrons

Nothing really, but also good things. How come? We still have full creative control over the games content. Also, everything regarding our Patreon will remain the same. No changes here. The folks at Movie Games got in touch with us because they like what we do and they dont want to change the game, just help it grow.

Our relationship with Movie games affords us some much-needed QA support and localization, as well as some mentoring from acclaimed producers. Were gamers and developers first and foremost, but have little experience bringing a game to market. We simply havent got the resources or experience to maximize our potential, and Movie Games has the talent, resources and experience to fill that gap. Were very pleased to be working with them!

2. What this means for our potential success

This is where the fun begins. Well get full marketing support, translations, and a proper release. Theyre here to help us to attract new players and expand our audience. I wont spoil things to come just yet. Youll see.

The great thing about it is that were talking about everything, all the ideas are approved by us first, so you can be sure the soul of Beyond Sunset is intact. And if they help us get noticed, then this may not be our first and last game at the same time.

3. Who are these guys anyway? And why we partnered with Movie Games

They are an indie publisher. Theyre mostly known for Gas Station Simulator and Drug Dealer Simulator, but theyre expanding into other genres. Theyre making MythBusters: The Game, they have a horror series Lust, and theyre working on an RTS called Fire Commander etc.

Fun fact: Movie Games works with the core dev of the first The Witcher, and also with God of Wars David Jaffe!

It turns out that theyre big boomer shooter fans with ties to the community, and thats how we got in touch. So far, its been great talking about our plans for the future. You can check them out here:

I, for one, welcome our Polish overlords!
