Hello everyone!
Thank you so much to all the people who sent us entries to the Community Graffiti Challenge! We had some great ones, alas, we had to choose a winner.
And actually, weve chosen two. Because why not, right?
Congratulations to J S and Steve Roberts! Your Graffiti will be added to the game with one of the next patches to be discovered on the walls of Sunset City.
Cheers!
Heya folks! We've been out for only two weeks and the Steam Awards are already here! And you know, we do have an absolute banger of a soundtrack, courtesy of the synthwave legend Karl Vincent. If you need a reminder, here is a sample: [previewyoutube=gwH8coiHNuU;full][/previewyoutube] And, of course, Karl has more Beyond Sunset tracks posted on his YouTube channel. When we started working on the game, we knew we wanted an original soundtrack, made just for us. We didn't want to use ready-made tracks. We posted an announcement on the synthwave fan page saying we're looking for a composer who would like to make some music for us... And we were stunned when Karl Vincent himself responded! So that's how it started. How it's going, you can hear while playing Beyond Sunset. The music is tailored especially for our game, and it adds a unique cyberpunk atmosphere. There is no better music and no better composer we could have asked for! So, we do have a request. We believe Karl Vincent totally deserves a reward for his soundtrack. Please nominate us!
Hello people! It is, of course, possible to make and release a game alone But its extremely hard! Luckily for us, we had help starting with all the people in our team, and our publisher. However, we also had some help, sometimes unexpected, from all around! Every video and stream, every retweet and repost, every shoutout to us and a review written in the media and on Steam, all of that is an immense help to indie devs such as us, and were extremely grateful. No exaggeration here. So! There are some people who went above and beyond, and these people we want to thank from the bottom of our hearts. Here they are! [previewyoutube=0Lt-iiTyS0I;full][/previewyoutube] Of course, there are others, and we thank you too. And big thanks to all of you who bought the game and left a review on Steam! Without all of you, we wouldnt be where we are today. Thanks!
We covered Episode 1, let's continue with the walkthrough of Episode 2!
Hello, folks!
So it's now officially over a week since Beyond Sunset was released. We've got so many positive reviews, and we see so many people playing our game on YouTube or Twitch! We're astonished and absolutely grateful.
But, we also see a lot of you dying time and again Or getting lost, or having trouble solving some puzzles. We do have a game guide available, so let us have a look at it!
Hi folks!
Remember our graffiti challenge?
We are extending the submission deadline for another 2 weeks the contest will end on November 24th!
So, send us your art!
Hey everyone!
Good news: we've successfully fixed the Mac release of our game. You can now enjoy it in its full pixelated glory. Sorry for the inconvenience!
Taking this opportunity: thanks everyone for joining us in our weekend playthrough. It's been a lot of fun. Thank you also for all your feedback. Remember that a Steam review means a world to us, so if you played Beyond Sunset, don't forget to share your thoughts!
Hello folks! Beyond Sunset is now out in Early Access and weve seen a lot of interest from yall! Content creators are playing, gaming media are sharing, and there are positive reviews incoming! All that makes us extremely giddy and very grateful to all of you who bought the game, played and reviewed.
Pixels! steamhappy Explosions! steammocking Pixelated explodive carnage! steamthumbsup
Hey there! Were finally here! Its an exciting and touching moment for all of us. We can finally share the fruit of years of our work. Thank you for supporting us, have fun, and after you play - please leave your Steam review. We want (and need!) to know what you think to improve what we can and deliver even better episodes later on. Oh yeah, about later on - heres the plan!
Hello! You have absolutely no idea how ecstatic we get when we see people using our game as an inspiration, be it fanarts of the characters or remixed soundtrack. It makes us positively giddy! So, when we got tipped off that a young and very talented lad has remixed the music so close to the premiere, we decided to use it for one of our minitrailers. Here it is! [previewyoutube=SlfxzD4jtsg;full][/previewyoutube] Give the man a follow while youre at it!
The premiere of Beyond Sunset is approaching fast, and if youre growing impatient (like weve heard some people do), we made a list of things for you to do to prepare!
Of course, you dont actually *have to* do any of it to enjoy Beyond Sunset but it wont hurt either!
Hello everyone! Its one of the favourite days on the year Halloween! So, as were fans ourselves, we want to wish you a happy Retroween! Its Halloween but in Beyond Sunset, so its retro, get it? Eh, I should probably stick to making games. Anyway, have a great time!
So Something happened. Actually, it happened some time ago but we really wanted to share it with you at this time of the year. So we might have a life on our conscience. Or many lives, really. Just dont call the police, we can explain! Some time ago David Jaffe, the father and creator of God of War, decided to stream himself playing Beyond Sunset. And apparently, our game killed him. Multiple times, in fact. Theres even video evidence posted on YouTube. [previewyoutube=8sD650GKgN4;full][/previewyoutube] So, our sincere condolences to David Jaffe for dying in Beyond Sunset. Please dont report us for murder! (We hope you know its all an elaborate joke.) Happy Spooktober!
Weve just announced a community graffiti challenge, and that got us thinking. How would other games look like if they were happening in the Beyond Sunset world? Well, our publisher has a few cool titles on their account so we had a look at these through our pixelated glasses And they look really cool! Take a look:
Are you an artist? Or do you like to dabble in pixel art as a hobby? So, how about seeing your own art in Beyond Sunset? Lets start a challenge!
Create a pixel art graffiti fit to reside on the walls of Sunset City and send it to us the winning graffiti will be added to the game as actual street art!
The contest runs Oct 26 - Nov 10. Make sure youve read the T&C, and when you do, send us your creations at fanart@moviegames.pl. Remember to send us two versions of your art, one in PSD and one in PNG. The graffiti should be no larger than 64x64 pixels.
Happy creating!
So, like with every game of this kind, there are bosses. In Beyond Sunset, every episode ends with an epic fight with one of the very unique bosses. Lets hear more! [previewyoutube=IHVq_Lts_pw;full][/previewyoutube] What else would you like us to talk about in a video? Let us know in the comments!
Ever wanted to just invest in a truck and get on the road? Now you can with a new game copublished by our publisher, Movie Games! Alaskan is more than your typical truck sim. Experience life in the definitive trucker simulator. Deliver cargo to make your business a success. Get out of your truck to explore Alaska while maintaining your vehicle and preparing for treacherous conditions on the road. Have you got what it takes to become an Alaskan trucking legend? Alaskan Road Truckers is premiering now! What can you expect from it?
Do you know what gives a game a totally unique atmosphere?
Yes, its the story.
The graphics too, yep.
But whats in my mind right now is music. And we have a smashing soundtrack in Beyond Sunset!
When we started thinking about making the game we knew that we needed music that enhances the gameplay. Its not enough to simply buy the rights to ready pieces and try to fit them in in the story. We needed music composed for Beyond Sunset and Beyond Sunset only.
So theres little story here, honestly: I made a post on a synthwave fanpage asking if there is anyone interested in helping a small dev team with music for their new game. And weve got a ton of answers! BUT. Weve also got a message from someone we did not expect to see in that thread: Karl Vincent.
Yes, THE Karl Vincent, an absolute synthwave legend wrote to us that he wants to make a soundtrack for Beyond Sunset. And we were beyond excited, obviously! No pun intended.
So as we continued working on our game, and Karl started composing a fantastic soundtrack youll be able to hear in the game (and you probably already heard bits of it in the demo).
[previewyoutube=gwH8coiHNuU;full][/previewyoutube]
Give the man a like on YouTube and leave a follow because he totally deserves it. And thanks to his music, Beyond Sunset is that much of a better game.
[previewyoutube=tIJonQKwOno;full][/previewyoutube]
Thanks!
Hi there! Excited about the Early Access? We are!
So, we said it many times that each episode will be a little different from the others. There will be different mechanics present, different abilities to utilize, and so on. But what does it mean, exactly?
Well, lets take a look!
Prologue and Episode 1 act much like an introduction to the game. I mean, duh. The players will be introduced to all the core mechanics, many of which are rather new if your only experience with the genre is the good old Doom.
These mechanics include:
So, why is the game retro? Because its a love letter from a bunch of Doom modders who decided to make their own game.
Honestly. Beyond Sunset is an amazing shooter game with fleshed-out narrative and RPG elements. Were very proud of how it shapes up. But the first thing all the people notice is the graphics of a game. And ours is pixelated.
Of course, this is a result of us making the game in the original GZDoom engine. We started our dev journey as a group of modders with a huge portfolio of Doom mods. So when we started making our own game, we chose the engine we felt most comfortable with. Is it the best engine there is? Absolutely not. Was it the best decision at the time? Yup.
So thats why Beyond Sunset looks the way it looks. We love it regardless!
Remember that Beyond Sunset is coming in Early Access on November 8, 2023!
Hi there!
So, weve held an AMA session on Reddit, we also collected questions that popped up here and on our social media. And because there were so many good ones, we decided to get the best questions in one place for everyone to read!
If you wanna browse through the whole AMA, check out our reddit thread, Discord server, and social media (Twitter).
Ready for some bonus info?
Q: When is the official release date?
A: November 8th!
Q1: So I've seen that the project started as a TTRPG. What was it inspired by mechanically, and what did it play like?
A1: It was a GURPs campaign. I hosted the original campaign for some friends back in 2016. At the time, I was interested in the idea of creating an "urban crawl". Sort of a hexcrawl open-world hybrid type-thing. The idea was to mimick the hexcrawls of yore but in an urban environment. The campaign I ran was pretty short, I only ran it for a few months before my players found a satisfactory end for the game. It was overly ambitious to try to cook up an entire setting for the campaign from scratch, so I decided to take my notes and turn it into a source book. I ended up licensing the EABA role-playing system for the sourcebook. This was a mistake because EABA is a total nightmare.
And here are the absolute garbage rules if you're even more curious:
Q2: Is there a plan to maybe pick up the TTRPG concept again?
A2: Not right now.
Q: What were the key inspirations for the project and how did it come to be?
A: In 2015 I got a job across the country from where I was living, so I listened to the book "Snow Crash" while moving from Denver to Philadelphia. I found the book really captivating.
Sunset draws a lot of inspiration from "Snow Crash"
Star Wars is also a big influence on the game, and I think it's pretty easy to see that in the visual design
Q: Whats your favourite idea that had to be cut?
A: We originally planned to have 6 episodes, episode 3 was going to be a Mad Max-style wasteland. We ended up dropping this because it would have been a lot of work and didn't really serve to advance the plot of the game
Q: I believe you've said Sunset was developed in GZDOOM because it's what you were most familiar with but do you have any regrets about choosing to make the game in that engine over more modern ones? Do you feel it made for a better/worse game overall? Was there anything you absolutely couldn't do that you wanted to while working with a ~30 year old engine?
A: I have a mixed mind about this, but the short of it is that I have spent a lot of time adding features to Beyond Sunset that are considered industry standard for most game engines. Stuff like navigation meshes, behaviors trees, menu systems, etc. Lots of nuts-and-bolts stuff. I have become a pretty capable programmer with a much deeper understanding of some otherwise difficult computer-science concepts for sure. So, I don't regret having to do a lot of this stuff myself. The flip side is that throughout development, it's been a constant struggle against the limitations of the engine. I can't speak to how this affected the overall quality of the game, I don't know what sunset would look like I had migrated to Unity. There's a bunch of little gzdoom-isms in Sunset that I overlook, but I think general audiences who are unfamiliar with gzdoom might find them off-putting. In hindsight, using GZDoom created a lot of limitations that I would rather not have had to work around.
TL;DR: If I make another game with the same ambitious scope as Sunset, it will not be in Gzdoom. I have another gzdoom side project on the backburner that's a lot less ambitious than Sunset and I think better suited for that engine.
Q1: Do you plan on releasing the UDB config file for user maps?
A1: Uh, yes, we definitely have a very real UDB config and are not still building the game as though it were a Doom mod.
Q2: Ha, in that case, how many errors does your UDB throw up when you open a map? At one point, RF had like over a hundred
A2: Several of hundred.
Q: I don't know if this question was answered yet, but where there any cool extra cosmetics added to the game for weapons?
A: We don't have any cosmetic modifications for the weapons. We're mostly focused on keepin our weapon roster as small as possible and keeping the guns focused on utility first. if we do end up making any cosmetic changes, they'll probably be fairly basic, like color swaps
that said. we have like a gazillion upgrades for them
Q: Will the game be divided in levels like classic Doom, or will it be more open? Or maybe have a hub area?
A: The game has pretty large non-linear levels that run across multiple maps. I would compare it to Hexen.
Q: What I've seen of the game is definitely impressive. Did it push GZDoom to its limits technically, or is it well within the engine's bounds? Best of luck on the game!
A: Thanks! One of our design goals was to ensure the game has Vanilla GZDoom support. We made no engine modifications to ensure that the game will remain playable with new GZDoom features well into the future.
Q: I just got recommended this, so I don't know much about the game, but I wanted to say it looks neat and I hope you guys are having fun making it. I guess my question is, why the Doom engine, just for the style?
A: Style and comfort. Ive been making doom mods for 20 years, its what I know how to do the best.
Q: What are the pros and cons of using GZDoom as an engine compared to other popular engines? How easy is it to learn?
A: Pros: very quick prototyping, easy-to-learn mapping tools.
Cons: basically everything else.
Q: How many chapters or episodes will the final game have?
A: We have 5 planned at this time. Originally we planned for 6. We may bring back the lost episode as DLC in the future.
Q: Will the game have accurate mouse control, haven't played many GZDoom games, but i remember some having inconsistencies with the x and y axis. Also will the game have QoL stuff like fov, head bobbing... etc
A: The mouse control is the stock gzdoom mouse control. Freelook is supported and the sensitivity can be seasoned to taste.
Q: What is your preferred approach to storytelling in boomer shooters? I'm mostly thinking on a scale like from Doom 2016 to the original doom, with Ultrakill somewhere in the middle. I've seen some of how you approach story in your own game, and I could assume your game reflects that, but I am also interested in your personal approach to gameplay vs story in this genre.
A: Ive taken the approach of letting the story play out through environmental storytelling and interactions with non-player characters. Theres a lot to discover in the game world that helps reveal the full story. I like to reward curious players with deeper lore.
Q: Console release?
A: Heya! This is Rin from Movie Games, the publisher. Were currently researching options for porting the game. No promises yet but were certainly looking into it!
Q: How does your game stand out from the boomer shooters of the past few years? The list is long and thanks to awesome devs like you it keeps getting longer!
A: Beyond Sunset has a more fleshed-out game world than most retro shooters. I see Sunset as a vehicle for its story.
Q: This looks so much fun! Just added it to my Steam Wishlist. How big is your team? And how long did it take to make the game?
A: 3 Devs, it's taken about 2 years so far.
Q: What were the main inspirations for the setting/aesthetics? I really like it
A: Im a big fan of synthwave. I wanted to make a synthwave boomer shooter.
Q: What game was your introduction to Boomer Shooters?
A: Doom 95
If theres still something you wish to know, simply drop us a message!
Stay tuned people!

Hello people!
Sometimes we get asked by our fans how can they support us. So, together with several other retro shooter dev studios, weve come up with a message to all of you interested in helping us out:
If youve been following our news about Gamescom you know that weve prepared a new and improved demo for the occasion. Weve also said that we will take that demo down when Gamescom is over. Well We changed our minds! In our humble opinion, this demo is too good to revert back to the old one. So, its here to stay! Whats different about this version of the demo?
Yall, were on Gamescom!
Starting today until the end of the week Beyond Sunset will have a booth at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany. If you happen to be visiting the event, find us in hall 10.2, booth E040.
Whats more, during Gamescom, we will have a TOTALLY EXCLUSIVE demo available to play on Steam. Download it and play the improved demo of the game! Dont wait with it tho, as that exclusive demo will be taken down when the event ends.

Loading Loading Loading ERROR Limits of excitement not found We have a true genre mix here now! David Jaffe, the magnificent creator of the equally magnificent God of War, played Beyond Sunset live on his YouTube! And were proud to say he liked our game. Hi All! Our game has an episodic structure, like most classic shooters, and every episode plays (and looks, and feels) a bit different. Episode 2 is titled Hostile Takeover! And we have a brand new, super fresh and crispy teaser just for the occasion. [previewyoutube=h0DalykEs4E;full][/previewyoutube] Just as a reminder, as we've mentioned a few posts back, E2 takes place in a technological megastructure. It's more abstract and we designed it to function as a living and breathing organism, to make it not only more interesting for the player but to add more variety to the gameplay. Our Publisher is on sale! Well, their games are, obviously. And up to 90% off, too!
Hi all!
Beyond Sunset is a retro game at core, yes, but it cant play like a retro game. Today, simplified AI behavior just wouldnt fly. Enemies cant stumble around half-randomly, with their only objective being looking for you. This stumbling is something you can notice easily in the original Doom. We wanted to avoid it. So what did we do?

As an RPG game, Beyond Sunset is ripe with NPCs. Its time you meet some of them, no? Let us introduce you to Balthazar, an administrator at MetaCorp. Hes a competent guy but he can be quite a pain in the butt and his short temper is infamous.
The in-game characters are made in pixel art (inspired by the works of Josan Gonzales) but they all start as a painted draft. Thanks to that all sprites are faithful to the art you will see just as the pixel art of Lucy looks just like the hero art from Steam.
Here is how Balthazar was made:
[previewyoutube=W5ZsWNHMe0Q;full][/previewyoutube]
Lucy and Balthazar are only two of many characters that will appear in the game. Do you want to see the others?
Have you ever entertained the thought that a game never ends up exactly as planned? Design and development are iterative processes, and this means that ideas change.
I have an example for you. Its a small change that significantly impacts the way you perceive your gaming experience.
Heres an SCPD (Sunset City Police Department) officer, one of your enemies, as we initially designed him. He has a white-and-blue uniform and generally isnt that far from a riot police officer you might see in real life.
And here he is after a couple of tweaks
He also comes in two flavors, the second one being this:
We changed his colors to what we think feels more cyberpunky and less contemporary. His shoulder pads are massive, and in his larger iteration, his melee animation has a trail to make it more punchy. This new takes some inspiration from the music video for Billy Idols song Shock to the System, check it out!
All of the above results in a look thats more futuristic and aggressive. Despite the fact that this enemys behavior hasnt changed, youll (hopefully) THINK that hes more dangerous. And that will translate to more exciting encounters.
Keep this in mind if you played the demo. The full game will bring a lot of surprises!

Hello!
Time to share some more Beyond Sunset lore! Do you know that our Sunset City is basically San Francisco?
In 1968, San Francisco has been completely destroyed by a massive earthquake people started calling The Big One. But humans adapt fast and on the ruins, a new high-tech city was built. This new highly modern city is Sunset City. Later on, the MetaCorp was founded and the MetaComputer was created and the rest you will find out for yourselves *wink wink*
In our world, San Francisco lies on an active fault line and the whole area is extremely prone to earthquakes. The Big One is a predicted earthquake that geologists expect will happen in the next hundred years. It's not without precedent either, in 1911 San Francisco was devastated by the biggest earthquake in Californias history. Lets hope it wont happen too soon.
If you look closely, you can see some similarities between San Francisco and Sunset City. For example, the West Sunset Mall in-game is based on the Ray Bradbury building from Blade Runner (and Ray Bradbury was a great sci-fi writer, btw.).
Weve also tried to replicate the climate of San Francisco as best as we could in GZDoom. San Franciscos bay area is well-known for its iconic rolling fog every morning and we captured it here:

Our publisher, Movie Games, just announced a new game which will come to PC in 2024. [previewyoutube=BX2dqCblTVI;full][/previewyoutube] The 1980s were a different time. No smartphones, no GPS. Run simple jobs: pickpocket, act as a courier, pick locks, all under the polices nose. Earn respect with the city gangs and dont let the cops catch you! Hi All!
You might have noticed a small change in the Publisher field on our Steam page. WE HAVE A PUBLISHER! Its Movie Games, and were very happy to be working with them. Heres what this means, and why we partnered with them.
1. What this means for the game and the Patrons
Nothing really, but also good things. How come? We still have full creative control over the games content. Also, everything regarding our Patreon will remain the same. No changes here. The folks at Movie Games got in touch with us because they like what we do and they dont want to change the game, just help it grow.
Our relationship with Movie games affords us some much-needed QA support and localization, as well as some mentoring from acclaimed producers. Were gamers and developers first and foremost, but have little experience bringing a game to market. We simply havent got the resources or experience to maximize our potential, and Movie Games has the talent, resources and experience to fill that gap. Were very pleased to be working with them!
2. What this means for our potential success
This is where the fun begins. Well get full marketing support, translations, and a proper release. Theyre here to help us to attract new players and expand our audience. I wont spoil things to come just yet. Youll see.
The great thing about it is that were talking about everything, all the ideas are approved by us first, so you can be sure the soul of Beyond Sunset is intact. And if they help us get noticed, then this may not be our first and last game at the same time.
3. Who are these guys anyway? And why we partnered with Movie Games
They are an indie publisher. Theyre mostly known for Gas Station Simulator and Drug Dealer Simulator, but theyre expanding into other genres. Theyre making MythBusters: The Game, they have a horror series Lust, and theyre working on an RTS called Fire Commander etc.
Fun fact: Movie Games works with the core dev of the first The Witcher, and also with God of Wars David Jaffe!
It turns out that theyre big boomer shooter fans with ties to the community, and thats how we got in touch. So far, its been great talking about our plans for the future. You can check them out here:
