Roguelite-Mode Overhaul and New Items

Roguelite Mode Overhaul


All enemies are on the battlefield at the start. There are no reinforcements, pickups, or rewards when taking out enemy units. Dev Comment: Most of the features from the former Roguelite mode are a staple in Epic Mode. Now that the battles are standard 6v6, the game mode can be faster and focus more on strategy.

Epic Mode EXP Change


Epic mode no longer allows users to "Upgrade Equipment", which was a way to buy character levels with earned gold. EXP earned is nearly doubled, but Gold earned after each battle is reduced. Dev Comment: This feature was confusing for newer players because of how unusual it is to see in an RPG. It is an important feature for the more strategy-oriented game modes (Survival, Roguelite) and so it still exists within those modes.

  • First story mission has less units spawning. The battle is easier and quicker to finish.
  • One of first undead story missions is also made easier

    • Tier 3 Long-Range Spellcaster.

    • Meteor: Deal damage to an area. Has large cast time, a long range, and deals a large amount of damage.

    • Solar Flare: Deal damage to an area in the shape of a wall relative to the caster. Cannot target diagonals. Also has high damage, large range, and long cast time.

    • Lock-On:Choose another spell. The spell will follow the target unit rather than his current location.

    • Magic Shell: Target will take no damage from the next spell he receives. (This ability has also been given to the Sorcerer Job)

    • Craft the Astromancer's Staff to unlock the Job (Very Late-Game).
  • Projectile Lines


    • When Targeting with a projectile ability, a line is drawn indicating who it will hit
    • The lines are also drawn when a player is choosing where to move and indicate how your movement affects projectiles that will soon fire.
    • You can also see these lines when using Teleport. Warpgate, and Earth Pillar

New Dragon-Knight Job

    • Works with almost every spell: Flames, Cure, Haste, Upon Death
    • Works with other special skills like Guard, Double-cast, Infuse (Melee only)

  • New Features


    • Upon the second run-through of the story mode (after finishing the first), enemies have upgraded jobs. They'll have Tier 2 jobs instead of the Tier 1 jobs that appeared in the first run-through. This is to have the second run-through feel different and be sufficiently challenging.
    • Swap Job Button. If you have correct job upgrades you can more easily swap your Main Job and Sub Job.
    • New Cloaks of Dragons item that grants Breath: Flames ability and the upgraded version offers the Dragon Knight class.
    • Hold Down DPAD for faster cursor navigation. Works how you would expect: hold down an arrow key and then after a short time the cursor will quickly move in that direction.
    • Necromancer's Upon Death may now have AOE. There is a new upgrade to increase its AOE. Lancer's Charge now increases the AOE of Upon Death instead of the ability that it triggers.
    • Timeline appears when viewing the scene and considering whether to continue casting or not.
    • More random maps will appear in Bandit missions and Mercenary Training missions.
    • Expected HP absorption from magic or weapon will appear over the caster when selecting a target
    • You may now use Guard with Bombard, Direct Shot, and Sniper Shot
    • AI Improvements
      • When your party is much stronger than the enemy, the enemy is more likely to engage than delay
      • Dumb AI units (soldiers, bandits) now think they have more accuracy than they actually do, resulting in them attacking more often and being idle less.
      • AI no longer considers enemy Rage. Oftentimes enemies attack their own units that they expect to die, to remove any Rage that could be gained by their opponent. It appeared as though the AI was making a mistake.
      • Enemy is less likely to buff melee units that are not near an opponent.
  • Fixes


    • Fixed crash that could occur with Champions and one of its upgrades
    • Fixed issue where items would disappear when trying to remove an item that grants a job
    • Change Job Bonus descriptions to be more consistent with the number appearing on right or left of text.
    • Controller orientation settings now correctly affect choosing direction with Wait
    • Buffed Berserk HP, Speed, and Concentration to be more inline with other Tier 2 jobs

    • New "Mercenary Training" battle appears in final town.
      • The battles are tougher.
      • Appear multiple times in the mission list with different levels and scales with your party
      • Units can be any class or any combination of classes. May fight against a Paladin/Warlock for instance.

    • Fixed issue where repeatable missions were not repeatable.
    • Fixed Economy and Potion party upgrades (they weren't doing anything. If you completed the missions it will adjust and work correctly for you after the next battle).

    • Berserker JP requirements upgrades have increased (matched other Tier 2 jobs)

    • Congratulations to SilverPrime for completely breaking Roguelite Mode! But, rage abilities no longer increase the rage of the caster.
    • Epic Mode and Survival Mode are affected this update. Survival Mode keeps the mechanic where you select bonuses and treasures every few days. Epic Mode now requires you complete battles to unlock these bonuses/treasures.
    • Roguelite Mode has only been affected by bug-fixes and the addition of Pickups
  • Notable Features / Bugfixes


    • Now 12 Save Spots instead of 4
    • Holy Cloak item: Cast Judgement after a weapon attack
    • Rage does not increase when attacking your own ally
    • Longer item descriptions in shops
    • Mouse scrolling within menus is no longer slow
    • Undo defaults to the Move option (no need to click move again)
    • Roguelite no longer repeats the last mission
    • Delay in menu when hovering over units. Will be less flickering when moving mouse.

Goals for 2024

My priorities for 2024:

  • The new version of the game that completely replaces the original will be available soon! Looking like March 2024.
    • All of the details of the new game will be given when it becomes available
    • There will be a new dice minigame available in Epic Mode that rewards the player with items.
    • 8 Months of bugfixes, AI-improvements, and optimizations will be included
    • New graphics for the late-game classes that were added last year [table noborder=1] [tr] [td]

  • I will be focusing on testing the game on more devices and optimizing some loading times. Most of the negative reviews are the result of the game not functioning properly on some players' machines.
  • I will set a release date and focus more on marketing. I will be looking for official reviews as well as more player reviews.
  • There are more jobs and items I'd like to add to the game as well as some super-late-game-content.
  • And lastly, I'll start testing on XBOX in preparation for releasing on some consoles next year.

New Rage mechanic, new Job, and new Abilities

Progress is being made on the completely redone story-mode. In the meantime here is an update for the existing version of the game.

  • New Rage Mechanic


    • Dealing damage or taking Damage increases your Rage meter
    • When filled, if the character has a Rage ability, he will immediately choose a target and cast that ability.
    • Several Rage abilities have been added to the game. See below
  • New Berserker Class


    • Revolves around new Rage mechanic.
    • Has ability Fury which will increase caster's Rage meter
    • Has Rage ability Unleash which deals unblockable physical damage to a target from a distance
    • Job is available to Protagonist by default, but can be unlocked by others with the new accessory: Berserker Axe.
  • New Job Upgrades


    • Tempest Rage: Lightning+
      • Immediately cast an AOE Lightning
    • Commander Rage: Command
      • Immediately issue a Command to an allied unit
    • Ninja Rage: Strength
      • Immediately gain additional strength
    • Ninja Start Turn Speed
      • Gain Speed at the start of each turn

Goals for 2023. Story Mode Revamped

  • Despite the less frequent content updates, significant progress is being made on the new and completely redone Story Mode
    • There will be less of a focus on generic missions and more of a focus on a linear set of story-mode battles.
      • Currently, there doesn't feel like there is an objective to train or get stronger. I want the player try the next mission, fail, take on a generic mission or two, and then succeed.
    • There will a greater focus on variety. I want each mission to feel different. I will achieve this a few different ways:
      • Enemy or Allied bosses with unique abilities: ones that target all enemies, that target multiple areas, or do other powerful things.
      • There will be more variety in objectives. Defending certain characters, reaching destinations, surviving.
      • In-battle bonuses. Some missions allow your character to gain stats and heal by taking out certain enemies. Additionally, pickups have been added: some missions will allow you to walk over a pickup and immediately gain a bonus, cast a spell, or summon a unit.
      • Having interesting allied units
    • There will be less units on the screen at once. Battles will be closer to 6v6 than 7v7 or 8v8.
      • Oftentimes the battles seem too cluttered
      • I want many missions to have AI-controlled allies, but the battles felt like there were too many units on-screen already
    • Reinforcements
      • Many missions will have fewer enemies on screen, but enemies will enter battle over time. The same can occur for allied players
        • It is simply more fun for the player's 6 allies to destroy 20 enemies than it is to destroy 6 more powerful enemies
      • Similarly, bosses will have more HP but have less enemies on screen at once (the rest will trickle in)
        • This allows the user to experience the boss more throughout the battle without having him be too powerful or too vulnerable.
      • There will be battles where you selected, say, 7 characters, but only 4 will ever be on-screen at once. The rest will enter the battlefield whenever you lose an ally.
    • The Party-Upgrades will only be granted to you in Survival Mode. Epic mode will require the player to unlock the bonuses through completing certain missions (which will be available at any time in its own mission list).
    • Other features may be added to the game before I have a chance to finish this story-mode
      • A time travel ability, that rewinds the game, inserts an action, then fast-forwards the game.
      • Limit-Break-like set of abilities for the protagonist, certain enemies, or certain classes.
      • New Tier 2 or Tier 3 classes. I have many ideas.
      • More job-upgrades
    • Lastly, I will be continuing to eliminate bugs, improve AI, optimize loading times. All of which have had drastic improvements over the last year.

      • Stronger than all previous Jobs, but can only be attained through certain accessories.

      • Mystic Knight has been drastically buffed and now requires the Mystic Cape

      • Warlock Tome, Time Mage Tome, Vampire Tome, Tempest Tome. Tier 4 versions of their corresponding spellbooks. Grant access to the new jobs.
      • Tier 4 item that grants immunity to status effects. Same effect can be upgraded from Mystic Knight.
      • Tier 4 item that changes your weapon into a ranged-weapon attack. Same effect can be upgrade from Time Mage.
    • Auto-Turn button and hotkey added. Have AI take control of the current character's next turn.

    Time Mage Spellbook


    Time Mage Spellbook grants three new Abilities

    • Slow: Status effect that reduces target's speed and focus
    • Stop: Set Speed / Focus of target to Zero. Can also no longer block. Has a cast time.
    • Quick: Immediately progress target unit's turn and casting progress
    Other New Features:
    • Option to Upgrade all items automatically
    • Can upgrade items that are equipped to a character (it will remain equipped when upgraded)
    • First few missions below level 6 in Saphrat will always be capped at 4 or 5 units
    • Can no longer use Control Magic on Guard: Weapon

    You can now play at lower resolutions

    I expanded the number of available resolutions down to 1280 x 720. You can even play lower, but there may be some small UI issues. Reactivated a feature that sped up AI processing time. Fixed issue where some menus would not scroll down if you were using a controller.

    New Roguelite Game Mode!

    New Roguelite Game Mode. Destroy as many enemies as possible each round. Game difficulty skyrockets. New Arena Skirmish mission type. Battles behave as they do in Roguelite mode: destroying as many units as you can. Increased map pool by 20%. Each mission has more locations. Additionally, enemies have more units but they are weaker. Added option in battle menu to "Win Early". Useful for this new game mode. Also useful for missions that ask you defeat as many units as you can before timer ends. Changed the way Haste works. Now gifts 40% of caster's concentration to target's speed and concentration rather a flat 40% increase. Added option to skip opening scenes / battles. Fixed issue with Rebirth where enemy would immediately fall again.

    New Warlock Spellbook and Crash-Prevention

    Introduced new Warlock Spellbook Dark Bolt: Projectile magic. When blocked, the blocker can deflect to a new target. Curse: Status effect that reduces magic/strength, but gives target ability to pass status effect onto someone else. Mind Control: Become controller of target unit, until caster or target takes damage. The game is now more stable. When a certain common type of crash occurs (with the AI), the game will self-correct. This should account for most situations where the AI crashes. Improved Settings Interface Improved Try-it-out battles Fixes issue where you could not open a Treasure Chest Fixed issue with Archer using Sentinel's Guard ability with his weapon.     New Mysterious Dungeon and a Massive AI Speed Improvement

    Introduced a 9-floor end-game dungeon full of very difficult enemies with powerful accessories. These missions will reward the player with the strongest accessories. Once completed, you can go through it again (but the difficulty is increased). The AI is now about 300% faster! Some units will still take a bit of time (Sorcerers and Commanders). Some missions now have accessories attached to their description indicating what you will earn upon completion. Many other bug-fixes.

    Split game into two Game-Modes!

    The game is split into 2 Game Modes: Epic and Survival. The missions will barely scale in Epic Mode and there are no lives. People who enjoy grinding and getting good gear would prefer this mode. End-game content coming soon. Survival mode has the difficulty rising very fast and have limited lives. EXP and gold are accumulated about 3 times faster. Players who enjoy a challenge and do not like grinding will prefer this mode. This mode determines high scores. Existing files default to Epic Mode. Fixed Some issues with HP / Strength / and Magic values since the last update. Game will no longer crash when doing a Tutorial after playing a Game File. Many other bug-fixes.

    Special Treasures Added

    Every 10 days or so, you are give the option of choosing from several of the new Special Treasures. These accessories do interesting things and may shape the way you play the game. Each one can be upgraded as well. You will see these items on enemies and mercenaries throughout the game.

    Battle Improvement

    Enemies teams now consists of many duplicates, rather than a random assortment of units. Battles should feel more unique and exciting now. Enemy AI is slightly dumber in favor of reduced "thinking" time. Enemy AI will attain Tier 4 equipment when it reaches high levels (beginning at level 200) rather than cap out at Tier 3.
