We are back! Version 0.10 is finally out!

Today we finally release a new version of Super Sky Arena. It has been over five years since the last release and now we revive our early access to finish this game at last!!!

This has been five years in the making

It took us quite a while to get to this point. Essentially, when we first started working on this game, we intended to create our own multiplayer-focused shooter inspired by Starfox. But whenever we talked about leaving Early Access, we felt like something was missing. First of all, Starfox has a great single-player campaign, but also, multiplayer-only games are hard to pick up. So we wanted to have something that could be enjoyed alone. This led us to take several attempts at a single-player mode, which all grew way out of proportion for a small, two-developer hobby team, and therefore eventually were scrapped. During this time, we also grew quiet in our communications, because we never felt like we had a good direction while our real-life jobs took over most of our time. This created a feeling that we are not able to finish something that we are proud of. We are very sorry that it took us this long to post any updates and that we have abandoned this project for a while. We hope that you still look forward to what we have in store and especially what we came up with for this new update!

Introducing the new challenge mode

Challenge mode is our way to introduce the game to new players and especially engage solo pilots. You have three lives in total to play through multiple missions. Each mission earns you points which, eventually, you can showcase on a global leaderboard to compare your skills with the community. Today, we release the very first version of this game mode!
We are still missing the leaderboards and also the galaxy only has 4 missions, for now. Our goal is to create many varied missions on our existing planets, which lead you on an adventure across different game-modes, planets and custom rules. This allows us to showcase what Super Sky Arena has to offer with funny custom rules and challenging missions for you to tackle. Please note, this is not a full-blown single-player campaign or story mode. Since this is a hobby project, that would be way out of scope. But we felt this is a great compromise which we can actually manage to get done :) But there is even more in this update!

Customizations, crystals and player XP

Throughout all planets, you will now find beautiful crystals which you can collect. After every round, you will receive XP which, eventually, leads to leveling up your player profile. Each level comes with new customization options you can select for your characters, for that unique touch. We are launching a couple of customizations and during early access, we plan to add many more.

Improved visuals for planets and weapons

We spent quite some time improving various visuals, for example by adding new light effects and completely new planet shaders. Everything looks much more polished now.

And more...

  • We started a Discord server and linked to it in the main menu. Come join us and leave feedback so we can create a fantastic game together.
  • Bots can now use secondary weapons. I mean, it has taken them a long time to learn, but they now feel much more like real enemies.
  • New maneuver mode. Loopings have to feel great, but they were much too complicated before. Now you can trigger a looping by pressing your secondary weapon key while you are boosting. This is the first iteration and we want to improve it so your ship won't crash into stuff anymore while doing a maneuver.
  • Various bug fixes and improvements. It has been five years, so we did a lot of stuff everywhere and we already forgot some of it ourselves. But the game has improved a lot overall :)
We hope that you enjoy this new update and are looking forward to finishing this game. Our goal is to leave early access this year and if you want to join us on that journey, please do join our new Discord server. We promise that the next update won't take us 1955 days, as a screenshot of the update timer from the previous version showed so prominently in the main menu:
Best wishes, Simon and Oliver

Patch Version 0.9.0

Hello everyone, It's a new month, it's a new thursday, it's a new patch. We are slowly winding down from conference season and came back with a lot of useful feedback. First of all thank you everyone who came to visit us at our booths. We had a great time with all of you :) This patch is actually just a small update to let you know we are still going strong. We are working on a couple of big ideas and features at the moment which need some time in the oven before we can show them to you so that's why this patch is a little lighter. We redesigned the Starkiller map completely. The first iteration of Starkiller had two levels. We just wanted to experiment with something new but we found that this is actually pretty confusing. The map was too big and the two levels made the minimap harder to read. The new Starkiller map only has one level, just like the other maps, and we created a bunch of new assets to improve its visual quality. The second small addition is actually a feature that has been requested by vistraiza in our forums. We added a new setting to the custom rules so you can decide if you want to take damage when crashing into the terrain. So if you think you are a pro, crank up that damage to add some excitement to your high speed chases :) There are also some small bug fixes and improvements in this build. Though, every patch list of every game always says that, so who knows what that even means :D As I've said, we have some big ideas cooking at the moment which are planned to release soon. I am really looking forward to get those out to you. In the meantime, let us know what you think of the Starkiller changes. Cheers, Oliver

Patch Version 0.8.0

Whatsuuuup everyone! Finally a new Patch is out. We apologize for the skipped patch in july. But we hope to redress that with a super awesome new feature: CHARACTER VOICES. Check out the Trailer for Version 0.8.0: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnDaBFBZ3as Patch Log: Voices All characters are fully automatically voiced now and we love it! You can also trigger voices yourself by using the d-pad on your controller while you are in a match. You have a variety of taunts, answers and cool shouts to have a word with your enemies! Map Changes: Frozen Colony We were a little unsatisfied about how the frozen colony mechanics worked. The "two floors" System can be very confusing especially when you look at the minimap and there seems to be an enemy around but you can't see him. Its also kind of preventing intense fights because you have to look out for eachother to much. So we closed the basement in frozen colony and we also removed the snow storm. We like the idea of map events which impact the match but we felt that the snow storm was more annoying than fun to cope with. Bugfixes A lot of bugs were fixed. Soundtrack Molten Core finally got his own soundtrack. Check it out, play a match on Molten Core! :) We really hope you like the new features and changes. Give us some feedback! We like to hear your opinion and thoughts. - Daio

June Patch (0.7.0) - Final 8th Character revealed and ALL THE CUSTOMIZATIONS

Hello lovers of Super Sky Arena, It's another month so we have another patch for you :) This version is all about customization. Mainly, you can now customize your controls and all the important stats for your weapons. This allows you to create your own crazy gameplay ideas. How about you only play with mines and they will not despawn? Or have super long tron walls so you can actually play tron. It's a mess, and super fun! :-D We also did a lot of work on our UI. We had to do this in order to prepare the game for a console release (yes, there will be a console release :) ) but this work also created really cool features for you, like an ingame leaderboard screen and extensive end-game statistics so you can boast about your achievements. Here is a detailed list of all the new major changes: Changelog New Character: Dolphin Finally, the 8th character is revealed. All you people who requested to have a red character rejoice, but is this what you had in mind? :-D He is a very special snowflake Ingame Leaderboard By pressing the Back button on your gamepad you can now toggle an in game leaderboard which display more information than the side board End Game Statistics ALL THE STATS! You will now get weapon damage counters, kill stats, accolade counts and much more after every game Custom Rules for secondary weapons Change almost every gameplay relevant value for the weapons. Weapon damage, lifetime, radius or fire rates. This new Custom Rules screen allows you to create absolutely insane game modes that will have you rolling on the floor laughing. Let us know if you find a crazy ruleset that you just cant stop playing :) Controller Customize If you are not happy with the control scheme we provided, or if you have a weird gamepad that we don't support quite right, you can now customize all of that to create your own ultimate control scheme Double laser changes The double laser pickup now only spawns after 60 seconds and in a random location on the map. It also got it's own minimap icon so you can find it quickly and the player, who has the double laser equipped, is highlighted ingame by a special icon so you know who to gang up on. Balancing We did a lot of balancing work on the secondary weapons to make them feel more powerful, threatening and, in some cases, useful. German Loca A new localization system is now in place so you can get all the written text in your own language. The first language that we added is german (since we are from Germany :) ) but more will probably come Reworked Options Screen The options screen is now much nicer, categorized and has many more options for you to fiddle with. Custom Character Quick Chat Phrases The quick chat messages (press the D-Pad to access) are now customized for each character to give them each a stronger personality Analytics We added anonymous analytics to this version in order for us to better understand the gameplay balance. This allows us to fine tweak the weapons in the future to make them all feel powerful and fair Updated to Unity 5.4 Finally, we updated our core game engine Unity to its newest version. Everything should work as normal but there may be some small issues creeping in here and there which we'll keep an eye on. Many, Many small fixes and improvements As always, we implemented tons of small additional fixes to improve the overall experience Please let us know what you think of these changes so we can make the game even better :) Cheers

May Patch (0.6.0) - New Weapons and Mac/Linux support

Hello fellow master pilots! It's a new month and a new patch was just released. In our ongoing efforts to make the game more accessible we focused on balancing the scales between experienced and new players this month. For example you now get different types of secondary weapons depending on which rank you have on the leaderboards and we added new weapons that should help newer players to kick some ass more easily. Another huge addition is the difficulty level for bots. When adding CPU players you now get the option to choose between Level 1 bots all the way up to Level 9. This way you can play against enemies at your level and start improving your skill quickly. Also, we finally released version for Mac and Linux. These versions are still experimental so if you find anything odd, please let us know. We want to get them as polished as the windows version as quickly as possible. Here is the full list of changes for this month:

  • NEW NEW NEW!!! Two new weapons have been added to the rotation: The Fuel Tank and the Drone
  • The Fuel Tank only appears for the top players and it refills your boost energy instantly
  • The Drone only appears for the last player. It follows you around and automatically shoots at everything that comes close to you
  • Weapons are now weighted. Players ranked first will have a different chance to get certain types of weapons than players ranked in the middle or last. This way we hope to level the paying field a little bit between players
  • New difficulty levels for the bots. You can now choose from Level 1 (just flying around doing nothing) to Level 9 (kicking your ass hardcore) to fit your own skill level
  • Matchmaking bots will start at Level 5 and adjust their difficulty automatically each time you play a game to give you a good challenge withour overwhelming you
  • The Main Menu screen has been completely revamped to make it more understandable
  • Mac and Linux versions of the game have been added in an experimental state. They should work pretty well but please let us know about any complications you might have so we can make them as robust as the Windows version
  • Rebalanced the EMP, Heatseeking Missles and Mines to give them more Ompf
  • New switches in the options menu to toggle anti aliasing and shadows
  • Many performance improvements and small fixes
Cheers!

April Patch Part 1 + New Special Weapon!

What's up fellows! TODAY is patch day. Let me seize this opportunity to introduce myself. My Name is daio and I'm the new community manager of Super Sky Arena. In order to have even more time to develope new features and add cool stuff to the game, I joined the Super Sky Arena team to help out the game developers. So now the Devs are locked in their offices and develop 24/7 and I will make sure that you guys know what is going on in the Super Sky Arena Universe! But let us head to the important information for today: Observer Mode We added a basic version of this new feature that we plan on extending alot in the upcoming patches. If you're in a match you can switch to Observer-Mode by opening the menu and pressing "observe". For now your gamecamera will follow one of the other ships and you can switch between all players or bots. In the future we plan on adding a different view for observers such as a bird's-eye view which gives you a really cool view of the fight on the planets. Deathcamera We also changed the deathcamera a bit. You will now see the player who killed you within the respawn time, so you will remember on whom you need to take revenge ;) A new Special Weapon Last but not least we added this sweet specialweapon: The EMP. It is a perfect weapon to escape from enemies who are chasing you. It will explode shortly after you dropped it and stun every enemy within its range for a short amount of time and exhaust all their fuel. If you perfect the use of the EMP plus a maneuver like for example a looping you can manage to do very nice kills. Enjoy the new features! I will be around alot in the future, so see you guys in the Arena! I WILL HUNT YOU DOWN! - Daio

March Patch Part 2 - A new Mode!

Hi folks! Part 2 of our March patch is finally here! We added our first Team Mode ( apart from Team death match )

Team Hustle

Each Team has a Flag they have to constantly carry around. When the flag carrier is killed or drops the flag and the flag touches the ground this teams timer starts to count down and they have to pick it up again as fast as they can. The team with time left on their clock wins. This mode is now the default for our Matchmaking servers. I hope you try it out and were looking forward to your feedback :)

Starkiller Map

Also, we have a new Map! Finally! Inspired in no small part by Starwars as you probably guessed from the name, Starkiller has an extensive underground area to explore and exploit. I teased it a little bit on twitter already, youll have to check it out yourself for more :) Also, more audio, fixes to various things that cropped up, normal development stuff. I hope you like this update, were pretty proud of this one. I had a lot of fun playtesting the new mode with Oli, and I hope you will too! Feedback is very appreciated! See you online! -Simon

March Patch Part 1 + New Name \o/

Hello everyone. As Simon wrote before, we did quite a bit of rework for the looping movement code which took way longer than anticipated. But we finally have something that works. You will see that brand spanking new update in your steam downloads next time you load the client. You will also see that we changed the name... kind of :) A few weeks back we told you about the name clash we have with another game called Sky Arena. If you search for Sky Arena on YouTube you will find a bunch of videos for the other game and a couple of videos for ours. Together with you we came up with the idea of simply augmenting the name. And thus "Super Sky Arena" is born :) I think Super Sky Arena will work very well because a) it's still kind of the same name so our previous marketing efforts are not wasted b) if you search "Super Sky Arena" on YouTube you'll find a bunch of videos that are over a year old. So the term is free for us to fill with our own amazing content. Success The march patch will come to you in two parts. Today we pushed the new movement scheme because we want to test it a little bit online. Later in the week we will push another update with the new game content we have been working on over the last two months. It's going to be a good week for Super Sky Arena :) A quick description of the new movement system: -Press either B (Circle) or RS to toggle the new mode -You enter into a very fast moving state, indicated by a firey glow around your ship -In this state you have full range of motion, if you pull up, you pull up to do a looping. But you can also pull down to do a downward looping or roll and turn and do a looping at the same time. It's up to you :) -This state is dangerous for your enemies. If you ram someone while in this state you do some heavy damage -This state is limited! There is a new fuel indicator that quickly drains when using the boost mode and you can refill it by picking up the yellow energy pickups Please play around with it for a bit and give us your feedback. We would love to know what you think about these changes -Oliver

Super Sky Arena is a modern re-imagination of the Starfox multiplayer mode. You pilot a jet fighter to have fast paced dogfights against three of your friends. Play either locally, in splitscreen mode, or create an online game and let your friends join from all over the world. And if your friends are busy, you can always play against the AI to train for future confrontations.

We plan to create the ultimate multiplayer experience for this game. To do this we developed (and are developing) many different forms of multiplayer gaming you can enjoy with your friends.
  • Local Multiplayer
  • Online Multiplayer
  • Local or Online against Bots
  • In Development: Couch vs. Couch Multiplayer (Online Splitscreen)

  • Fast paced action dogfight: Fight your friends in a dogfight that requires quick reflexes, strategic maneuvers and powerful weapons
  • Multiplayer in all colors: You can play in local splitscreen mode, join online matches of your friends and eventually combine both in our couch vs. couch multiplayer (this is still being developed)
  • Original music: Each map has its own fast pumping music that reminds us of good old 80s and 90s rock
