New Features
- Super Weapon Shop - The shop found on the Church now only sells Weapons, but all at level 10! These are quite expensive, so youll need to save up your Iron if you want to be able to afford them.
- Random Weapon Shops - These shops offer weapons for a lower price, but the weapon is only revealed once you buy it.
- Random Item Shops (1 of each type) - These shops are similar to the Random Weapon shops, but instead of only weapons they offer 1 random item of each type: a Weapon, an Ability, and a Charm.
- Paid health at the Haven - There are 3 additional Health Items in the Haven now, but these must be bought with Iron. The Refill barrel in the Haven no longer heals the Hero, but it does still refill his Health Flask.
- Resurrection Item (reclaimed embers) - A new item can now be found in the Havens before the Church and the Final Boss. These Reclaimed Embers can save the Hero at the point of death, giving him a second chance without having to start back at the Crypt.
- One-Hit Protection - If the Hero remaining HP is over 20% of his maximum and at least 30HP, if he receives damage that would kill him he will instead be reduced to 1hp. This effect can only occur once every 30 seconds.
- Wave Rooms - New Challenge Rooms! Some of the locking rooms found throughout Purgatory will now start empty and spawn waves of enemies. The doors will only open once all waves have been defeated.
- Revolver reload speed increased.
- The Mortar now has a larger damage radius but slightly longer reload time.
- Greater Sin/Iron rewards for Outlaws, Lost Souls and Bosses.
- Sin rewarded for destroying Injustices Ritual Pillars.
- No more duplicate items at the Witch.
- Armoury no longer shows grenade items that havent been unlocked.
- The Legions found in the Canyon and Churchyard should now display a pre-attack ground warning, like the Legion found in the Mines does.
- Reload time on weapon descriptions now shows a previously hidden reload delay.
- Weapon descriptions now show stun damage as well as regular damage.
- The Lantern ability now shows its Stun status effect duration.
- Teleporting no longer works on exploding barrels, caged lanterns or hanging boxes.
- Refilling health flask UI prompt says "Replenish health" and not "Replenish flask"
- Mortar - Fixed an bug where it was not hitting multiple targets, not scaling damage correctly
- Reload Delay now shown on the Weapon Details
- Fixed an issue with Health Flask and interacting with Outlaw
- Fixed an instance where player was unable to hit the exploding barrels with a spear/axe
- No longer possible to use lasso on exploding barrels
- Fixed an issue with enemy animation still playing "stunned" animation even though enemy is not stunned anymore
- Mortar shot accuracy changes based on aiming - if you just pull the trigger without holding first the shots will be very inaccurate.
- Mortar now damages environment objects (like cover, barricades and exploding barrels).
Gameplay Changes
- Added Beacons to the Start and End of each level in Chapter 4. These can be examined to help you locate Righteous Souls.
- If you miss a Righteous Soul no more will appear in the current run.
- Curses from Lost Souls and Righteous Souls now stack.
- The Molotov ability used by the Preacher and Outlaws now has a delay on the explosion.
- The Creeping Gold trap in the mine now causes the burn status effect instead of damage. The effect is applied after 0.5 seconds (giving you a moment to get out of it).
- Injustice is now guaranteed to drop the Hellraiser remnant
- Remnant drop rate increased for rarer/tougher enemies
- Massive reduction in the Sin cost of the more expensive unlocks.
- Mine Ability - duration increased again, cooldown increased, additional mine dropped, trigger range slightly increased, distance thrown slightly increased
- Mine Damage now scales with Resourcefulness level.
- Trap duration increased
- Workhorse - slight damage nerf
- Escalator - damage increased
- Splitter now splits into 3 fragments, increased from 2
- Flaregun reload time significantly reduced.
- Flaregun flares now last longer, will stick to enemies as well as walls, and their light allows
- Range of melee knife abilities increased
- Throwing knife damage increased
- Trickshot ricochet damage increased.
- The Splitter and Trickshot no longer lock-on, making it easier to ricochet shots.
- Shield cooldown increased
- The Health Bar will now flash when at less than 20%, or less than 30hp.
- Weapons now show ricochet damage in their descriptions (Splitter and Trickshot weapons) enemies to be locked on to.
- Status Effect damage now scales correctly with item level.
- Bug Fixes
- Level Exit Narration should now be correct
- Fixed two instances where the locking doors would not open after killing all the enemies.
- Boss homing magic no longer passes through pillars
- Heavy Cultist magic no longer passes through pillars
- Fixed a bug where Mines were getting stuck on enemies.
- Fixed a bug where the Witch Unlock Menu wouldn't open.
- Fixed an issue where players could be hit while vaulting over cover, causing them to get stuck. This was mainly an issue during the Injustice boss battle.
- Fixed an issue where The Hunt level would sometimes not generate correctly on a continued run, causing the player to fall through the floor.
- Splitter ricochet damage now scales with aim duration (previously it would always be max damage)
- Fixed the damage area of the shockwave attack used by some bosses.
- The Injustice Boss will no longer get stuck on cover.
- Mortar - now damages neutral targets (such as cover, barricades and exploding barrels)
- Iron Costs - all weapons can now be afforded on the Crypt
- Slomo effect will no longer play during the intro of a boss battle.

Howdy, gunslingers. Theres a new patch in town. In our continuous efforts to improve West of Dead were happy to present Update 1.11.6.2. Featuring a variety of tweaks, improvements and squashed bugs. Update 1.11.6.2 Changelog
- Fixed a bug where fog of war on the minimap would return to already visited areas if the player resumed a run.
- The Bloat (The exploding creature) now gives more warning when aggro'd, so hopefully will be avoidable at the bottom of ladders.
- A light has been added to make them more obvious.
- They can now be locked on to.
- They now deactivate for 10-15 seconds after being shot (used to be 5-10 seconds).
- To make them more obvious, they now open their window shutters when active and close them when inactive.
- Slight damage increase.
- Barrels now fall to the floor after being shot, a red warning circle is shown before they explode.

So, we have been busy updating the game with the Bone Orchard Update and we also have some other fun stuff happening. We created a cool marketing campaign with Pringles where we created the character Frank the zombie!
He has been on a bit of journey, escaping the game live on a Twitch stream with UK streamer Leahviathan! And while Frank has loved being in the real world, he is getting ready to get back into the game - because you know, West of Dead is better than the real world... ;)
Frank will become a permanent part of Purgatory from this Wednesday when he returns to the game.

Gunslingers, get ready for a hog-killin' time! This is our biggest update so far - A bag filled to the brim with new features, balancing updates and bug fixes. Without further ado, let me introduce;
The Bone Orchard Update
Gameplay Features:
- Locking rooms added - all enemies must be killed to exit.
- Dynamite Barrels - added to the Crypt, Hunt, Mine, Canyon, Battlefield, Town and Church
- Plague Barrels - added to the Bayou, Plains, Churchyard and Church
- Freeze Barrels - added to the Hunt, Mine, Battlefield, Churchyard and Church

- Plague damage scales with item/weapon level and character stats when spread.
- The Preacher no longer shoots through cover (issue with the Splitter rifle fixed)

Here comes another big one, we've been listening, watching and counting (through the magic of analytics) as you've all played, and have made a patch that focuses on Balance, Tuning and a few 'High Demand' features.
v. 0.10.0 - Patch 3 - Wayfarin,
Balance Improvements
We've looked at the entire balance of West of Dead, from top to bottom, and have implemented a lot of changes to smooth out difficulty spikes and generally allow a more steady sense of progression.
Overall Balance:
Enemy health scaling with level difficulty has been reduced, to make them feel less 'tanky' later on.
"Hard-Path" Levels (The Bayou, Canyon, Graveyard, War) have their enemy difficulty slightly reduced, but still higher than the "Easy-Path"
Level Redesigns:
New Level Layouts - Some more maze-like, others more uniform, from now on, players will (in some levels) be able to better find the exit, or choose to explore more.
Levels now have extra loot, hidden behind unlockable obstacles.
Rooms have more cover, and fewer columns generally. Making late-game gunfight more in your favour.
Enemy Balance:
We've looked into lots of specific enemy behaviour, and have tweaked and improved them so that enemies are dangerous as a team, not because of particularly obnoxious 'star players'.
Endless Rifleman: Reduced their health and attack frequency. (Making these an introduction to the mechanics, not deadly assassins in level 1)
Keelut (Dogs): Reduced health and damage, as well as fewer of them in the Farm. (We want these to feel like nuisance fodder enemies, not hounds bent on your destruction)
Endless Shotgun: Movement speed increased, Damage vs cover increased, Range increased. (These were under-performing, so we gave them a slight edge)
Camazotz (Flying Melee): Base health reduced, Correct balancing set (Were under-powered, so balanced their stats)
Broken Shotgunner: Melee replaced with Point-Blank Shotgun (nasty), Rarer
Broken Stalker: Rarer
Broken Grenadier: Rarer
Legion (Mines): Rarer
Legion (Graveyard): Now attacks twice consecutively.
Bloat (exploding enemy): More fragile, Rarer
Dakwa (Cover-Smasher): Rarer
Cultist (Flank and Teleport): Rarer
Preacher Bosses (and Stand-Ins): Health increased, Immune to light, Drop more sin. (These boss encounters seemed to be breezed through, so we've toughened them up, but they also give more reward)
Rune Bosses: Health increased (except for Wendigo)
Outlaw: Immune to light
Preacher-replacements - health/loadout now matches the Preacher's
Specific Level work:
The War (DLC): Artillery Bombardment added
Targeting, Pass III:
We've done a couple of things to complete the Targeting re-design roll out:
New Targeting applied to Abilities Abilities now target enemies in a way that is more consistent with firearms, whether you are throwing an axe, spear or teleporting, you should be able to choose your target with more confidence.
Targeting Assist Settings. This was a hotly requested feature, and depending on whether you want to play as a twin-stick 'purist' or have the game do more of the aiming for you to let you concentrate on tactics, we have a setting for you, even 'off'.
Quality of Life:
Remnants are dropped from specific enemies (previously they were random) - this will let you hunt down those missing, exciting weapons.
Throwing axes hit more often (bigger hitbox)
Level name is displayed in the map
Objects appear in the map from further away
Narrator only says the Barman has something to say when the Barman has something *important* to say
Options menu slight redesign to prevent text overlap
Fonts working with Polish
Bug Fixes:
Level Generation has better joining corridors in levels that ascend or descend
Mismatching Shaman ("Witch Woman") line is removed
Animation fix from trapped into crouch
Enemy traps animate again
Hero no longer knocked back when trapped
'Swarm' enemy no longer causes stun damage
Thanks to our community of players, we've been able to pull the 'More Quick and More Dead' patch together, which addresses some high demand features and improvements such as key bindings for PC, cover movement and Charms balancing!

- Quality of life improvements
- We've focused on making the game more accessible, smoother and easier to control and to smooth off 'snags' that interrupt game flow:
- PC Only Customisable Controls! We've added Customisable controls for Keyboard and Mouse.
- Sticky Cover - We've looked at the difficulty that some people have had getting around corners of cover. This is now easier, and the cover is also generally a little more 'sticky'. If that sounds like it's going to be harder to exit cover in a hurry - we have replaced the dive out of cover with a new *slide* which can instantly be chained into a further dive.
- Balance - Increased Shotgun ranges by ~2m, so that they remain useful in early and late run
- Heavy enemies are rebalanced (generally slightly nerfed), these were causing some real spikes in difficulty (and deaths) so we've mixed them in more nicely.
- Unlocking GUI list is faster, and sorted. This should make unlocking quicker and simpler.
- Lost souls look even more sad than before - we've given them a new animation, hope you like it.
- Shopkeeper no longer takes control of the camera when you leave!
- Snappier aim animations when shooting from cover. Sometimes, people would find shooting from cover was 'snagged' with the gun firing before it was aimed properly, now fixed.
- If you have completed chapter 4, it no longer displays that at the start screen.
- Boss doors open earlier after fights, letting you crack on with the rest of your run.
- Status effects are not applied if the character is invulnerable, this should make the game feel more fair.
- If the hero becomes trapped, they won't receive 2x damage. This will still happen to enemies, so use those traps when you unlock them!
- Swarm enemies no longer insta stun the hero, they will still slow him though.
- New hero *Trapped* animation, so you know what is going on more clearly.
- Dropped Mines do more damage based on your resourcefulness level.
- Slightly sped up text animation.
- Charms are now revisited to make sure that they are more evenly balanced and generally more useful. Every charm should be exciting to find and use:
- Aggressor's Charm: Buff - Recover health back in 2 hits, not 5.
- Defender's Charm: Slight Nerf - Recover health in 2 seconds, not 1.
- Jester's Charm: Buff: Stronger reload strength and duration
- Prospector's Charm and Seer's Charm: Buffed - significantly increased find rate
- Gunslinger's Charm: Buff - higher general reload adjustment
- Barman's Charm: Buff - 50% Additional health recovery from item consumption
- Visuals and Performance
- By revisiting our rendering tech, and our in game assets, we've streamlined the title, making it both prettier, and smoother!
- New Post Effect pipeline, faster, and with a smoother finish!
- Optimised art assets, meaning smaller package, lower memory overhead and better performance!
- Disabled additional effects when culling such as torches for a performance boost
- Hero can no longer punch or kick enemies through walls
- Camera is more stable
- Panel elements no longer overlap button prompts on pickups
- If you had previously missed out on the trophies associated with defeating the preacher or injustice - these will now be retroactively awarded. (#1519)
- Creeping gold doesn't trap you in place on hurting you - thanks for your feedback!
- Fixed the 'can't pick up health potion' bug.
- Outlaws no longer get stuck in tantrum mode
- Decoy ability no longer trips up hero movement
- Reduced frequency of game saving for no good reason
- Can no longer dive through righteous souls
v0.9.19.1 The Sure Shot update Quality of Life: Aiming with firearms and darkness! We have completely re-thought the aiming algorithm with the goal of allowing you to 'aim' into the dark when you want to. From now on, you will shoot at the target you are most aiming at, whether it is lit or in darkness. The difference between the two is that lit enemies have auto lock applied (highlight and aim assist), whereas enemies in the dark will have no auto lock applied whatsoever. The main difference is that lit enemies will no longer 'gobble up' your aim if you intend to shoot at a target in the shadows. Note, we have kept the ability aiming algorithm the same, so that we can get this change in early, rather than wait for that. This change was heavily inspired by your insightful feedback. Thank you! Fixes: Injustice can now be truly banished! The pillars in the injustice arena are now vulnerable when you have done the thing you need to do to unlock them (spoiler averted). Fixed the Boss Unkillable fix, which was caused when applying freeze during the fight! Fixed the Outlaw Soft lock issue, where sometimes the outlaw will not light the lantern in it's room. Defeating the preacher II should unlock the Met your Match award. Small fixes: Characters face one another when chatting - isn't that nice? Righteous souls fade out a little more smoothly. Enemies no longer slide when dying. Outlaw room doesn't lock you out. Aggressor charm description. Some Chinese localisation fixes. Note: We have changed the save version to support these changes. This will mean that your current run will be lost, however your progress in that run (any sin spent etc.) will not be.

In the Western-stylized visuals of the underworld, evil souls linger. Walk bravely into the shadows of a procedurally generated maze that changes every time you enter. The deeper you get into Purgatory, the more challenging the horrors become.
Who said dying was easy? WEST OF DEAD stars the exceptional voice work of Ron Perlman (Hellboy, Sons of Anarchy) as the main protagonist William Mason. He is a dead man who awakes in purgatory, bound to resurrect with no memory of who he once was. Fight hard to vanquish evil spirits that are hellbent to hunt you down while piecing together the mystery of your own past. Get ready to enter and then re-enter purgatory again. And again. And again.
In a world of light and shadow, ignite lanterns to shatter the darkness and thereby blind your enemies in order to take them down. Count every bullet and act tactical, you need quick reflexes to dodge, slide behind covers, reload and reassess. Please go through these steps first as this guide is intended to be used before contacting the helpdesk.
Removing game save data
If a player perhaps just wants to restart on a clean slate or is experiencing a game-breaking issue it will help to remove all the game save data.
PC:
IMPORTANT:
Remember to turn off steam cloud saves before doing this! Otherwise Steam will just get the data again. This can be turned off in the game properties under the Update tab.
Hold down the Windows key and press R
Type in %appdata% and hit enter
This should open up the roaming folder. Hit back once so you end up in the AppData folder.
Enter the folder named locallow
Locate and delete the folder named Upstream arcade
Restart the game
XB1:
Make sure the game is off
Click on the Xbox button on your controller to bring up the sidebar menu
Navigate to West of Dead and click the OPTIONS/START button to open the menu
Select game save data & add-ons
Go down to save game data
On the right, navigate to your Gamertag
Select your Gamertag and when prompted, select the option Remove everywhere
If the game isnt starting or is crashing upon startup the player should update the graphics drivers:
Nvidia:
Go to Nvidia site and locate your graphics card and download your latest drivers.
Alternatively use their Nvidia experience software to update them.
AMD:

Make sure you have no other software running in the background. Such as remote desktop and weird anti-virus software (however never turn off the Microsoft Defender!!) As these can cause the game to not function properly or crash.
If no error can be found please then attach the game logs and send it to the Raw Fury helpdesk
Retrieving log files & save data:
Hold down the Windows key and press R
Type in %appdata% and hit enter
This should open the roaming folder, go back one time and then head to the locallow folder
Locate the folder named "upstream arcade" zip it down and send it to Raw Fury support helpdesk https://rawfury.atlassian.net/servicedesk/customer/portal/1
My controller isn't working:
Several things could be wrong here. But first of all, which controller are you using. The officially supported controllers are Xbox One gamepad and PS4 Dualshock.
Steam could be causing some issues. You can try unchecking any boxes in the General controller settings under the controller tab in Steam settings. OR if that does not do the trick you can try setting up the controller again via Steam controller settings.

Just a reminder that the beta will close tomorrow (18 June) at 8:59 am CEST and that the official time for the game release is tomorrow (18 June) at 15:00 CEST.
If you want to claim the 15% off discount you need to have downloaded and played the beta. As we said before, the beta will be open until the day we release and we are happy to announce that we are releasing on Steam on the 18 June 2020 at 15:00 CEST.

The beta will be taken down at 8:59 am CEST on the 18th as we have some technical bits and pieces to do to get the release ready and close the beta page. But until then, the beta is open and ready for you to sharpen your skills before you take on the whole game.
So, prepare to awaken, trapped in the underworld, surrounded by evil souls bent on hunting you down. To escape your grim and gritty Purgatory, make sure to take the tactical approach and vary your playstyle, weapons, and abilities for each new threat because the 18th is not so far away!

The beta will run from today (30 April), starting at 16:00 CEST (07:00 PST) until the 7th May (23:59 PST and 08:59 on the 8th May CEST). If you enjoy the beta, we would really appreciate you adding West of Dead to your wishlist.
This time around we are showcasing the first 2 levels, and while, if this is not your first trip to Purgatory, you may have played them before, the levels are a bit different from what you remember.
We have taken the time to take on your feedback and these levels have had a lot of fixes and polish added to them. See the end of this post for the list of fixes
Right now, the team is working hard on getting the game through the last stretch of development as the release is looming on the horizon (more news on that soonish!).
Anyway, for now, its time to unholster your gun and start blasting your way through the murky depths of Purgatory.
(We recommend people to play with a gamepad for this Beta-session).
But before you do that - heres whats changed!
Firstly, to everyone that played the game. THANKS. Your feedback has helped us direct the development of the game. We think the game has had some significant changes since the first beta, and there is still loads more. Here are but a few
Changes/Additions
- We added a Tutorial level. Your feedback really helped us focus this on areas that were the hardest to grasp.
- Armory (with upgradeable start items). We added a new Armory (which will be upgradeable in the final game).
- Changed Health Mechanics. We made the health recovery system more versatile, with different 'charms' allowing you to recover health through different mechanics.
- Runes! The Runes that you collect off some special bosses now unlock new abilities (including Teleportation, which was previously on by default - :P ).
Quality of life
Your feedback really helped point out
- Camera style, we re-jigged the camera view when in combat to prioritise simplicity and readability, so that aiming feels more reliable.
- More Animations, Sound Effects (so many), Visual Effects
- We totally re-designed the GUI, so that the pause menu is more helpful
- The player now drops items after picking up new ones
- Holstered weapons are now visible on the hero
Balance
- Lots of balancing, whether it was enemy damage, dive timings and health recovery mechanics, enemy group compositions. We adjusted, tuned and re-jigged so that the game feels fairer.
Bugs!
- Thanks for helping spot bugs (so many bugs...), we're still clamping down on them, but your insight has really helped.
- We also fixed the one amazing bug that meant the hero tripped up on nothing after having a conversation with the trader. It was very, very strange.
