6 years ago today, Balrum released on Steam. Thanks to our Kickstarter backers we were able to create our dream old-school RPG.
A big thank you to every single person who supported us either here on Steam and GOG or on Kickstarter.
We are celebrating with a weeklong 75% Discount!
Happy Birthday Balrum! :)

Hi there! Balrum has just been updated to version 1.6!
First of all, a big thank you for everyone who submitted bug reports and feature suggestions!
Here are the changes for patch 1.6:
GUI:
-The buildable objects inside the Building panel are now sorted for ease of use. -Right clicking on an Inventory tab now sorts the items in that tab based on name and value.
-UI elements wont reposition themselves when minimising/alt-tabbing the game.
Engine:
-The renderer now supports water reflections and bloom effects. The bloom effect is disabled by default. You can enable it via the video options menu.
-The config.xml subsystem has been rewritten to be more compatible and efficient. -Improved performance on 4K systems. -Third party libraries have been updated to the latest versions.
Fixes:
-The marble hearth now costs the proper amount to build. -Some buildable objects have been moved to a different Building tab for ease of use. -All crafting tables have been renamed inside the Building panel to be more recognisable. -The Leader of the Pack boss now properly triggers the rewards dialog. (this was a regression)
Typos:
Basic text errors and logical errors have been fixed: -files/dialogs/en/gui/afterrelease.xml -files/dialogs/en/osric/packsandfires -files/dialogs/en/neil/history -files/dialogs/en/elestterr/elestterwelcome -files/dialogs/en/orran/orranwelcome -files/dialogs/en/bolt/boltifmage -files/dialogs/en/barnabas/youoweleonard -files/dialogs/en/helperdialogs/howtotaimanimals -files/dialogs/en/fox/golems -files/dialogs/en/walker/a_cape_of_a_warlock -files/dialogs/en/rod/rodimlookingforwork -files/dialogs/en/tina/tinamissingfriends -files/dialogs/en/kotf/reddragonwelcome
Thank you for your support everyone and have a nice day!
Yours, Balcony Team

Hello everyone! Patch 1.55 is now live with new features and a couple of fixes.
Features:
-New walls: We added a new type of wall to the building tab. These are brick walls and to build them you need to create bricks from clay. -New material: Now you are able to dig up clay at the waterside. -Bricks: Bricks can be made at a furnace from raw clay. -New plantable foliage: We added a few new flowers to the building panel. -New buildable furnitures: We added a few new buildable furnitures. -Jones now teaches a few new buildable items.
Gameplay:
-Skillbooks now grant learning points if you already know the skill the book teaches. (the book will be removed on usage) -Wizard spells do more average damage. The maximum damage of offensive spells are not changed, but the minimum damage has been increased. -Easy difficulty: The enemy health reduction on easy difficulty has been increased. So enemies have slightly less health on easy difficulty. -Durability: Durability decreases slower on easy difficulty. -Pet recall is now enabled during combat. -Young animals now stack in a single inventory slot. -The fire damage reduction while it is raining has been reduced. -Osric now sells more chickens.
GUI:
-The save/load panel now asks you if you really want to load a saved game. So accidental double clicking a save slot when wanting to save won’t load that slot. -Some basic UI text has been altered to make things clearer. -Some NPC world dialogs are now colored. -Picklocking floating texts stay longer on the screen.
Fixes:
-Fixed the orientation logic for a few buildable furnitures. -The Close Shot ability now properly indicates usability when there are no arrows left. -Fixed a crash that could happen when teleporting to the safeplace during an item craft. -In certain situations your pet did not autoattack. This should be fixed now. -Sometimes when loading in a new map the system would dismiss your pet even when there was space around the player.
Engine:
-Updated the engine libraries. -Initialization of the sound system has been changed to increase compatibility. For translators: -The after_release.xml has been changed. -The gui_texts.xml has been changed.
We hope everyone is having a nice summer!
Thank you for your support! Yours, Balcony Team

Hello everyone! The 1.5 update is now available!
The patch will reset your config file! (new config file name: “config_new.xml”) Game file caches will regenerate so be patient on your first boot! :) As we promised a few years ago, we are going to support Balrum for a long time. This update will introduce a completely new windowing system that will help keep Balrum compatible with modern and legacy systems. So this update is a technical update rather than a gameplay update. If for whatever reason the new version does not work on your system. We added a legacy branch called "legacy". The legacy branch is version 1.31 with the old windowing system. Since changing the windowing system affects everything (input, sound, rendering) we took the opportunity to update pretty much all of our systems. List of changes: -The game now uses a more modern windowing system. -Much better fullscreen support. -Much better HiDPI support. -Better high refresh rate support. (120Hz+) -Rewrote parts of the renderer (both modern and legacy):
- fewer draw calls
- smarter buffer handling
- optimized shaders
- fixed legacy warnings
- better handling of multiple sound effects
- optimized buffer handling
Thank you for testing and for your support everyone!

Hello, everyone!
There were two important issues reported. Thank you for your detailed reports! Fixes: -When defeating the boss in the wolf's cave the player is now able to speak of this deed with the villagers. -When smelting metals, only silver and iron critical crafts produce spotless metal bars.
Have a nice day folks and thank you for your support!

Hi, everyone!
Patch 1.3 is here with a few bug fixes! Thank you all for your bug reports! Fixes: -No more slight illumination hiccup in the morning time. -Piercing Arrow now does proper weapon damage + bonus damage. -Remaining strings in the code are now editable. (XML) -Trinkets with lighting effects now properly cancel themselves when swapping similar trinkets. -Fixed issues related to the “really interesting” book. -Modernised the filesystem. (this change should minimise the file corruption issues) -Auto rebuild of the config.xml if something goes wrong. For translators: The after_release.xml has been changed.
Have a great day everyone and thank you for your support!

Hello everyone! We hope all of you are having a nice summer.
During the past months there were a few reported bugs which needed fixing. Thank you to everyone who sent us detailed bug reports!
Fixes:
-When an npc's talking panel had a lot of conversation options, scrolling trough them with the mouse wheel could caused problems.
-In rare occasions when multiple containers were open and item divides were issued, ability selection could end up selecting the wrong slot.
-The auto closing of multiple containers (when the player moved away from the containers) sometimes could cause a freeze.
-The game now detects if the desktop resolution is really high and warns the player of the possible DPI scaling issues.
-Minor character panel tooltip fixes.
Gameplay:
-Mana now regenerates every 4 turns instead of 5 turns.
-Added graphical effects to some repair/build interactions.
For translators:
-The "after_release.xml" was modified.
Feel free to send us bug reports via email. http://balconyteam.com/contact/
As always, thank you for your support and have a nice day!

Hello there everyone! We hope you are all well. We are back with another small update. This update includes bug fixes for various systems and minor improvements to building. Also a handful of you suggested that when you enter combat with only “prey” type enemies the combat music should not start playing. This should make hunting deer a bit more enjoyable. Fixes: -There were times when some of the shield abilities miscalculated cooldowns. -The Piercing Arrow ability disregarded it's cooldown. -Sometimes when deleting furniture while on the floors tab the system would not give back materials. -Fixed a crash while deleting decals from walls next to doors. -If you were really fast with your clicking, sometimes you were able to get duplicated materials back while deleting certain furnitures. -The animation and sound while placing down berry bushes have been adjusted. -The smelter sometimes had a crafting material icon when you loaded a game with a character who has no smelting skill immediately after playing with a character who has smelting skill. Thank you for your support everyone! Have a nice day! Yours, Balcony Team

Hello there everyone! Update 1.21 has been released bringing a decent amount of fixes and new features. 1.21 also introduces Achievements. Thank you for everyone who sent us bug reports and suggestions! Thankfully there were no major bugs reported in the last couple months but if you think you found a bug please contact us. As you know save game compatibility is a very important element for us and we are glad to say that this patch (like every patch before) is compatible with old saves! Just as a reminder you can find community made translations for the game here: Translations forum. (Please note that you need to put every translation mod inside its proper folder. Do not overwrite the “en” folder. Some mods use the “en” folder so you need to manually fix this!) Some of the more noteworthy new features:
Achievements! (There are a total of 42 achievements to acquire.)
Added comparative tooltips for equipments.
You are now able to delete custom made recipes.
Grandmaster difficulty! We added an even more challenging difficulty mode to Balrum for those who seek an even greater challenge.
By pressing Shift + F2 you can disable/enable the interface.
Reworked a part of the GUI. (panel focus and responsiveness improvements)
Small additions: -ALT + click now puts materials inside crafting tables intelligently. -Autosaves won't happen when the player is below 10% health. -Cheat death now gives back more health. -Fields no longer get diseased if they are properly tended too. -Enabled numpad walk commands. -Tutorial popup when your pet dies or gets automatically dismissed. -Reduce Gore option is available in the options panel. -Game saves now show the chosen difficulty. Issues fixed by this patch: -Fixed a rare issue when some sound effects could stuck in a loop. -Sometimes certain bosses did not use some of their abilities as frequently as intended. -Damage absorbed text now shows the proper amount of absorbed damage. -Deep wounds ability cooldown now properly activates. -Mirrored monsters cannot cause a 0 damage critical bleed effect any more. -Disabled green cursor (usable) indicator on some unusable objects. -Fixed a graphical glitch when some late game NPCs did not render their staffs. -Mannequins now properly render their inventory outside of the safe place. -Fixed the ambient sounds of the island map. -Fixed the ambient sounds of the desert maps. -The GUI scale slider sometimes had problems setting the value. -Various small visual map changes. -Removing weapons while chopping down trees sometimes caused a visual glitch. -Fixed a rare player and pet collision problem. -Fixed a visual glitch in the last cutscene. -Fixed a color issue with the repair panel's equipped items list. -Fixed a rare issue with cleaning dust from ancient lore papers. -Fixed a few typos. -Fixed a number of other small things. (text/button positions adjusted..etc) For translators: -Tent tooltips are now editable via the after_release.xml. -Nightfall level “1” (dialogs/en/gui/spells.xml) -There are numerous new lines in the after_release.xml. -Changes were made in the gui_texts.xml. (difficulty texts, level up text, tutorialpet) Just a friendly reminder to everyone! If you installed translation mods inside the "en" folder you might experience problems (because the "files/dialogs/en" folder is the main text folder of the game and should not be overwritten). Supported translations should always install inside their own folder! (example: ru, de, ..etc) If you are experiencing issues with translation mods delete the "en" folder and run Verify Integrity of Game Cache from Steam! Thank you all for your support and have a nice day! Yours, Balcony Team

Hello there everyone! Version 1.1 is here with fixes and translation support! From now on you will be able to play the game with unofficial community made translation mods. Please note that these translations are not official translations. They are community made translation mods. There is a Steam Discussion about the available community translations. We will update that Discussion with new translations as they become available. http://steamcommunity.com/app/424250/discussions/0/364040166672294575/ At the moment we received a link to the French translation: -https://mon-partage.fr/f/XMgjdwFk/ We know about a Russian translation but we haven't received a link to the files. If you create a new translation please send us a link to it so we can add it to the available translations list. (our email: balcony.softworks@gmail.com)
How to install translation mods:
Extract the downloaded translation files. Copy all files into the appropriate files/dialogs/* folder. If you did everything correctly the folder you just copied files in should look similar to the files/dialogs/en folder. Launch the game and you should be able to select the new language at the Main Menu. (lower right corner) Fixes: -Honey and Milk won't allow you to exceed the maximum amount of hunger. -When creating Ancient Linen armours the selectable icons are now fixed! For translators: The “after_release.xml” file has changed. A huge thank you for our great community for their hard work! Thank you very much guys! Have a nice day! Yours, Balcony Team

Hello there everyone! We are back with a small update. Language mods support is almost ready! Pretty much everything is working. We are waiting for the translation mod teams to finish so we can add a GUI option for language selection. Some of you reported that you are having problems running Balrum when certain Overlay Programs (fps, temperature) are running. We also recieved reports informing us that the AMD Gaming Evolved (overlay) program can interfere with Balrum. Please disable these programs and check if it solved your problems. Fixes: -A more appropriate floating text will tell you about the requirements to use special books which grant you a skill. -Sometimes wrong LP and Thaler costs were displayed in the Talking Panel. Features: -Added support for additional languages font kerning. (translators should notice a difference in font kerning) To translators. These files changed: gui/after_release.xml gui/floating_texts.xml Thank you for your support everyone! Have a nice day! Yours, Balcony Team

Hello there everyone! Update 1.09 is here! The new patch contains a few things suggested by our community! Thank you for your feedback! There are features recommended by you that are still under development so if your suggestion was not added there is a chance it will be added later! :) Of course suggestions that don't fit the game won't be added. Suggested by the community: -Inventory Sorting. Right clicking a category tab in your Inventory now sorts the items in the clicked tab. -Double click to harvest grown plants. -Repair Statue. When reaching skill level 2 with either armour or weapon crafting you will be able to build a Repair Statue at your safeplace. -Capture Wisps. You are able to capture wisps with taming traps. A captured wisp will be in your inventory and you are able to release it anywhere you like. -Double clicking on items in the vendor panel now selects the whole stack. -When equipping new gear the swapped old item will end up in the newly equipped item's slot in your inventory instead of an empty inventory slot. -If you place down floor tiles that are already there no materials will be used. Fixes: -When the double mana usage debuff was active on the player the mana bar could display negative mana values. -The dungeon minimap now properly shows the player and pet tooltip. -Blind(melee) now requires a weapon. -A few typos. For translators. These files have changed: gui/floating_texts.xml gui/npcnames.xml gui/after_release.xml gui/gui_texts.xml gui/objects.xml grandpa/whathappend.xml Have a nice day everyone! Hello everyone! We are once again back with an update that contains a few things suggested by our community! Thank you for your feedback! There are features recommended by you that are still under development so if your suggestion was not added there is a chance it will be added later! :) Of course suggestions that don't fit the game won't be added. Suggested by the community: -ALT + left click on items in your Inventory when chests or other containers are open now instantly puts the item into the container. -When removing objects at your safeplace you get some materials back. -When enemies with the Reflect buff on them walk into traps the damage is no longer reflected to the player. -Player placed down traps now don't damage the player. -Slightly more health/mana is awarded when a potion/food crafting results in a critical craft. Fixes: -Stun and other similar abilities/spells now correctly display their durations and now decrement in the right way even when the combat was started with using one of the mentioned spells/abilities. -When Slash was selected the grid indicator showed up on certain not hostile NPCs. -Harry's Teleport Book (like all other teleportation devices) won't work when you enter a certain really important dungeon. -Rewrote the container windows logic. From now on they have priority and should not appear underneath any panel. -When the Raptor Ring is equipped it now properly heals you when landing a critical strike with the Slash ability. -When the color blind mode is enabled the spell/ability selection indicator changes color. -Your pet in rare cases ended up on the water. -You won't receive a warriors' guild quest from simply exploring certain areas from now on. -There was a rare case when the system did not warn the player that no melee/ranged ability was selected. Hello there everyone! We are back with the first update that contains quite a few things suggested by our community! Thank you for your feedback guys! There are small features recommended by you that are still under development so if your suggestion was not added there is a chance it will be added later! :) Of course suggestions that don't fit the game won't be added. Some of you brought to our attention that there are unexplainable hangs sometimes. Some of these hangs in our testings are caused by using third party cheat programs to alter the game. Suggested by the community: -Pet swap (when out of combat you now swap places when walking to the tile where your pet currently is) -Now we allow special characters when you create your map notes. -Repairable equipped items appear on the top of the list in the repair panel. (with a different color) -At your safeplace berry bushes now regrow. (only at your safeplace) -Now there is a “dual class” warning panel when you dual class. -Class skill tooltips now tell you about dual classing. -When dual classed, teachers now tell you why they cannot teach you. -You are now able to easily swap rings. -While walking and simultaneously pressing 'M' the map panel won't immediately open the new note panel (if the cursor is inside the map panel). -You are now able to rename your pet in the pet panel. -You are now able to pick up multiple items from a stack when pressing the middle mouse button instead of one item. -Major health/mana potion recipes are now learnable from teachers. -Your pet is a little less twitchy. -When you die the menu is now in a different place so involuntary clicks won't be a bother from now on. -Tab switches now pulsate so they are easier to notice. -Pet AI commands in the pet menu now have a tooltip with explanation. -To lower the involuntary chopping of trees and mining during combat there is a text next to the cursor telling you your click will either chop down a tree or start mining. -When defeating a certain boss the teleporter that teleports you outside now has an effect so you can notice it easier. -When trying to open your map in the desert a floating text now tells you that there is no map for the desert. -The fullscreen button in the options panel now informs you that you should check the automatically selected fullscreen resolution for correctness (multiple monitors with different resolutions). Fixes: -You can no longer auto-walk right after combat if a spider web is on you. -There is no false warning (in the debug.txt) when repeatedly pressing ESC while walking. For translators: There is a new xml file located in the gui folder called “after_release.xml”. Changes: -gui/floating_texts.xml -gui/automatic_dialogs.xml (new line) -gui/gui_texts.xml -gui/layer1.xml Thank you for your support everyone! Have a nice day! Yours, Balcony Team

1.072 Hello there everyone! We are back with another small update for you. We are getting less and less bug reports. This means we can soon focus on some of the community suggested “comfort features” in the near future! Thank you all for your detailed bug reports and great suggestions! Fixes: -We made changes to the sound system so now if we detect rare problems like the “surround” sound problem or the “no headphones/speakers are plugged in” problem the engine boots with disabled sound and informs you about the problem. -When Ulger starts to teach you his description was not visible. -When using the mouse wheel in the Building menu there was a rare case when the materials needed for the given buildable object showed up in the wrong place. -There was a small unenterable building that is now enterable. Have a nice Monday everyone. Yours, Balcony Team

Hello there everyone! A small update with only one fix! Thank you for your detailed reports and continued support! For those few who have problems starting up the game: There is an issue on certain computers with unplugged audio connectors. Plug in speakers or headphones and the game will start up. Also on some computers when “Surround” is selected in the “Speaker Setup” options on Windows the game might not start properly. Please select “Surround 5.1” or any other option instead of “Surround”. Fixes: -When polymorph is used on an attackable barrel the game might crash. Have a nice day guys! Yours, Balcony Team

Those who have problems with the fullscreen mode please make sure to disable DPI scaling on Windows. Hello there everyone! Thank you for your reports and suggestions! Version 1.05 was just released. Here are the changes: Fixes: -Skill books now properly grant the given skill. -Doors and doorways are now properly deleted when right clicking them during building. -The number of plantable berry bushes cannot go into the negative anymore. -Plantable berry bushes had weird names. -A quest from Hugh removed extra ingredients from your inventory. -Monster copies no longer give experience. -Guild traders will properly work now. -A certain quest acquired on the island no longer gives the wrong quest-description. -There was a certain place that should have been accessible with the teleport spell or teleport potions. -There was a bug that was tied to the underground places of the world. -Typos Changes: -Vendors now accept items even when their inventories are full. (Obviously items sold when a trader is full cannot be bought back) -Regenerated mana from wisdom gives back 50% more mana when not in combat. During combat mana regeneration has not changed! -When using Fire Arrows the damage dealt is now purely fire damage (not physical + some fire). This should help archers in certain situations. -The “Silence” bow attack now does not do damage. It only applies the Silence debuff. -Now you get 16 Simple Arrows when creating Simple Arrows at an anvil. -Deer now won't notice you as easily as before. -A certain “host” is now harder to defeat. Hello there guys! We are back with another small update. It is amazing to see people enjoying the game. As you know Balrum is our first game and for our small team your kind words are heartwarming. Thank you all for your support! Fixes: -A few of you were experiencing problems with input when switching to fullscreen. We implemented a workaround. This needs testing because we cannot reproduce it on any of our systems. -Spells that require a dagger, shield or axe now properly indicate this. -In building mode when you hover over the required materials a tooltip will now tell you information about the given material. -Pigs and cows now eat apples, pears and walnuts. -The Random Teleport Potion might teleport you to an undesirable place. This is now fixed. -One of the puzzles in the game that is lighting based was causing a small graphical anomaly. This is now fixed. -Typos Changes: -A few learnable abilities have been moved to new NPC-s. (mostly after the middle of the game) For translators. Hello there! We are back with the second update to Balrum! We debated about the hunger/thirst situation and we have a solution. We agree that when you talk and when you are browsing at a vendor hunger/thirst should not be a threat. We added an option to the difficulty panel during character generation to make hunger/thirst deplete slower. We did not change the core mechanic but now you have an option if you start a new game. If you don't wish to use this option simply ignore it and if you are already playing the game and you don't have a problem with the hunger/thirst mechanic you don't have to do anything, the mechanic stays the same. The only way this mechanic changed for current playthroughs is in while talking and buying items from traders the hunger/thirst mechanic won't be a threat any more. Fixes: -Forget crime scroll does not work on a few NPCs. -The “Unholy Shroud” item's buff is now not removable by a right click. -Various typos. Thank you for the reports guys! Have a nice day! Yours, Balcony Team

Hello there! Thank you for your feedback and kind words guys! We are back with the first update to Balrum! (we are still debating about the hunger/thirst situation) Fixes: -The guard at Kyler's village won't open the gates. -The mana usage of the Forget Crime scroll has been reduced. -The whistle sound won't get stuck in a loop any more. -Fixed a CTD when trying to repair critical craft items at a repairer. -Fixed a CTD when a custom item that was a critical craft reached 0 durability after long usage. -Fixed a bug that was causing a crash after the first boot of the game on certain systems. -Implemented a workaround to fix a crash on OSX systems that was happening only on the first boot of the game. To translators: (thank you for your work) -After we are done with everything regarding the release we will start contacting you. -We made changes to the “objects.xml” file. -The game already supports numerous language ASCII character sets but if you have problems with your language characters please contact us. Have a nice day guys! Yours, Balcony Team

Hello there everyone! We hope you are all well.
We have been really busy with Balrum and the game is finally in a good shape. We really needed the extra time. The whole game is finally balanced to our liking and we even could add a few extra features.
At the moment everything is looking good for a late February release.
There were a few major problems that we finally sorted out. The biggest problem was the support of really high refresh rate monitors. Balrum had trouble with 144Hz monitors but thanks to a thorough rewrite of our subsystems Balrum is running smoother than ever. As we were rewriting a lot of things related to the speed of the engine we took the opportunity to make moving around even smoother. You will see the difference!
Here are a few new features:
-Moveable pet health/mana bar
-Bigger main QuickSlot bar
-Autosave every X minutes (configurable)
-World Tooltips are now viewable from a distance
-Eye protection mode “Eye Care” (enabled in the video tab under the “style”)
-Options button in the Main Menu
The extra time allowed us to finish scrapped lore bits and quests so there is even more to do in the world.
Thank you for your patience everyone. We are working as hard as we can.

The gods of Balrum won't allow us to release the game just yet. We are sincerely sorry everyone but we simply need time to further polish the game for you. Things got over our heads. We hope you will stay with us for the additional time we need. Here is an update on what happened: The first half of the game is pretty much very well balanced and bug free. The second half is complete but we are having serious balancing issues. For the past few months or so we totally overworked ourselves and in the end this was the cause of everything. What does this have to do with Balrum? Not much. But we wanted to let you know. These days were really hard but please understand that we are doing this not only for Balrum but for you too. We won't ship a half baked product. We will keep you guys updated. Thank you for understanding. Yours, Balcony Team
