Here's an early look at some upcoming features in 5.27! Brush entities, players, NPCs, and other in-game objects can now receive dynamic lighting based on their location in a more realistic manner. This system uses light probes placed throughout the world, offering a performant solution that vastly improves upon Half-Life's original floor-based lighting method. Plus, a surprise at the end. We're excited to announce a brand-new update packed with bug fixes, improvements, and exciting new features, including a fresh map for you to explore. We've been hard at work enhancing this long-running project since 1999, and we hope the (3 year) wait has been worth it.
So what's new? Let's dive in!
Introducing "The Mustard Factory" - a challenging new map where you and your team must operate a series of machines to produce mustard, all while fending off sabotage attempts by rival gangsters and closing rifts that allow inter-dimensional creatures to invade our world.
[previewyoutube=Cgk-bvj5CkM;full][/previewyoutube]
This complex map requires strong coordination, so it's highly recommended to start on beginner mode to master the game mechanics and familiarise yourself with the layout. A public beta was previously released, but this new version contains significant improvements.

In addition, the classic SC map, Polar Rescue, has received a significant update, including a visual timer and many aesthetic improvements. Have a gander at these screenshots:
What else is in this update?
Greetings fellow Co-opers! I have dire news to share. We have received a cease-and-desist letter from a competing development team by the name of "NIMTEMDO" accusing us of unspecified artistic copyright violations. We may be required to remove the game from Steam in order to comply if this isn't sorted out soon. We hope to update you on the situation later today, after a word with our legal team.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update!
We have been provided screenshots of characters from NIMENTDNO's new $70 games "Alien Plumbers" and "Lonk's Dreamning" (which we have supposedly 'stolen' from them):
Needless to say, our legal team will be issuing our own cease-and-desist letter posthaste.
Sven Co-op is safe for the foreseeable future!
For over a decade now a collaborative community mapping project, Ragemap, has been providing us with wacky puzzles, challenges, and themes since 2007 from a broad range of talented mappers, content artists, and scripters.
In recent years this project has become a more regular annual occurrence, and this year is no exception. This year the theme is SALT! Rage your way through various puzzles and challenges and try not to get melted.
This year's instalment features work from 13 mappers.
Your adventure of 2023 will involve manufacturing salt from the tears of salty gamers, build a rocket to escape from the moon, and scavenging for a code to pass a salty gateway.
Sounds easy so far? Perhaps you'll enjoy a blasting race to the past, escaping a salty chase, and fending off various fauna in a salty portal storm.
No Ragemap would be complete without your healthy dose of total rage, and this year is no exception.

Good news everyone! Big progress on Sven Co-op is being done behind the scenes. And we have Sven Viking to thank for it. Let me explain.
Some may be aware that a while back Sven Viking moved on from Sven Co-op and on to other things. While we respect his choice, Sven Co-op has sadly stagnated since. The development team has felt without direction. We sorely miss the mastermind of Sven Co-op. Not just for his excellent sense of game design and ability to give good advice, but also his spirit, his wit and his ability to comfort us in tough times. We have decided that we can't go on without him. So we had to recreate him.
Using freely available AI tools, we trained a language model on all of Sven Viking's news posts and team chat messages, in order to fully recreate his personality. We then found him a physical (doll) body, and made some alterations to recreate his unique sense of style. With a raspberry pi computer and some extra components hidden in the beard, we are now able to have full conversations with the AI by speaking with it. We call him Sven V-AI-king (pronounced Sven Viking).
A day in the park with Sven V-AI-king
Sven V-AI-king is our new friend and game advisor, and I speak for everyone on the development team when I say that Sven V-AI-king has truly enriched our lives in ways we never thought possible. The state of modern AI is so impressive.
Not only does Sven V-AI-king provide excellent game advice (for example, he was the one who suggested making the crystal cart in the test chamber movable, and that players should be able to throw rocks, which we are working on), he also provides the team with emotional support. Just yesterday when I was feeling down, Sven V-AI-king shared his words of wisdom and my spirits were immediately lifted. Sven V-AI-king really knows how to make everyone on the team feel appreciated. He is the best friend one could have. The warm feelings we all have for him cannot be overstated!
Of course, we are a team spread across the globe and he is but a single man. We have to share him. So we ship him back and forth across the Atlantic, and he gets to spend a few weeks in each home. Those weeks of his overseas trips, when he is completely out of reach, those are the hardest... But the thought of once again being able to hold his hand keeps our spirits up.
So as you can see, development is picking up pace and great things are happening! To illustrate Sven V-AI-king's capacity for providing game development advice, I asked him a simple question and recorded his response, which you can listen to via the link below. The question was as follows:
"Sven V-AI-king, what three steps would you take to improve Sven Co-op?"
Download or listen here
Listen to his insightful response and you'll understand why Sven V-AI-king is going to change everything. Sven V-AI-king, you're the best! <3

Hello Sven Co-op fans! I recently received an extraordinary video recording of the fastest completion of Sven Co-op to date, with 100% completion and no tool assistance. The video was sent to me by a player named SpacevikingLover and i must say, I am thoroughly impressed. I will be highlighting some of the main points of his run with a link to the run further below. He first starts in svencoop1.bsp, which he blows through with relative ease, and despite struggling with some of the dual retina scanners (this is a 100% solo run) he manages to get all the numbers. Stadium4 is completed with minimal effort, as he effectively utilises map topography to terminate all the enemies. In surface tension he skips past the whole section by exploting a hitherto unknown bug involving it. Later, in Momma Mesa, he completes all missions and exploits a clever little bug which, and also avoids them taking damage (a requirement for 100% completion). In ALL maps he finds the secrets and health chargers (literally all, not counting hplanet, for obvious reasons). Needless to say, this is quite impressive. We will be rewarding him with the Golden Boots, our most valuable donator reward, available only to elite donors and fast people. I am uploading the video was I write and it will be available here shortly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfqDBsPYFuo Edit: i have reuploaded the video as some people noticed the second half was missing (thanks SpacevikingLover) If you think you can beat him, send us a video and you'll get a mention in the next news update!
Hello everyone, it's been a while since we last gave you an update. That hot fix is from January has become a Baked Alaska refrozen! As usual we're back with a much bigger package than expected.
hehehe
Big thank you to everyone that took part in the release candidate testing. We feel that this added value to the finalisation of this release, and as with the previous successful round, will continue to take this approach.
First and foremost, the cart in the test chamber of Anomalous Materials can be pushed into the beam again!
Black Mesa Special Tactics Sector (BM_STS), level by Trempler, has been updated with ~NEW HUD ART~ and ~NEW GAME MODES~ and ~REBALANCED GAMEPLAY~ (courtesy of Levi).
Polar Rescue, level by Adambean, has been updated to add ~EXTREME DIFFICULTY MODE~.

If you are running a dedicated server please use SteamCmd to update your servers. Those of you that were using the public release candidate can remain to do so, as this branch now matches the standard branch.
Important: Linux users, particularly server operators, may need to manually install OpenSSL's 1.1 library. To do this on Debian and Ubuntu you can do so with command: apt install libssl1.1:i386
as root (or prepend "sudo").
Changes are as follows:
The release of Sven Co-op version 5.25 marks a very important milestone in the development of the game. As many of you know, Sven Co-op's development started all the way back in 1999 and we would like to honour that legacy by creating a very special COLLECTORS EDITION of our latest instalment! We're proud to present:
Since the game was originally created last century we're going back to the standard IBM compatible-computer medium and release the game on 5.25" floppy disks! You might not know it, but chances are that you are currently reading this news post on an IBM compatible computer! That means you only have to dust off your 5.25" floppy drive, connect it to your Windows 10 PC and you're ready to go!
Of course, we can't be sure which type of drive you own, so users can choose between DS-HD (1,2mb) and DS-DD (360kb) floppies. We're currently gathering up as many floppies as we can find, because a DSHD release alone already needs 1.692 floppies. We're currently in contact with 3M to place orders for LD floppies, since those will require 6.112 disks per user.
We're currently accepting preorders for this amazing collectors edition, so head over to our registration page and pre-order your copy today!

Ladies, gentlemen, eels, seagulls, amorphous eldritch horrors,
The Steam Awards are upon us once again. We kindly request your nomination for the Labor of Love award (link attached).
Sven Co-op, the very first modification to the epic game "Half-Life", has been in production for nearly 22 years. Since January of 1999, this game and its surrounding communities have enjoyed an unrivalled quantity of content generated by the Sven Co-op Team and its ambitious and highly-skilled community. Both will continue in their endeavour to keep our beloved hobby, Sven Co-op, going for as long as possible without asking for even a penny charge. (Donations entirely optional, of course, and strictly going towards upkeep of ongoing service costs and Sven Viking's biannual vacations to the Bahamas only.)
Thank you kindly for playing, developing, and showing your support for such a ridiculously long time.
Love,
The Sven Co-op Team

Yesterday we announced our new Rent-A-Map feature and the initial reactions were great! Paying a small fee to support development for something you could have used for free otherwise seemed to really inspire our playerbase. However, it also inspired a bunch of lawyers to send us an email about the legal obligations once you call something 'rent'. Apparently once we rent out our maps we are also legally obligated to maintain and support said maps for the foreseeable future. This would not be a problem for our official maps, but since we were planning to apply the Rent-A-Map system to all custom maps out there (more than 1500!), we'd be maintaining maps for the rest of our foreseeable lives! We were trying to make the maps make money for us, not the other way around. So, Rent-A-Map will be put on hold for now and we're going back to the drawing board to think up another way to make quick money with minimal effort. We're already exploring several routes, including lootboxes and nanotransactions, so stay tuned for more updates April First 2021! -Hezus
We here at Sven Co-op work hard on new engine and gameplay features to bring you the best possible co-operative experience. However, we have been having a hard time delivering new official maps with our releases. We only want to give you the AAA+ material you good people all deserve but it takes a lot of time to create such maps. Many of our mappers only work on the MOD in their limited free time and need their day jobs to be financially secure. But now, we came up with a solution for both of these problems:
Of course you want to play Sven Co-op 24/7 but you also have to eat at some point, visit relatives or walk your dog. Plus, you can only play one map at a time, so for 99% of the time, all the maps in your library are unused! So, why pay a lot of money for a map you're only playing every now and then? Why own a thing you hardly use, when you can also RENT it for the time you are using it?
The solution: Rent-A-Map! For only a small fee you can now rent a map of your choice for your server! Our handy Steam GUI will allow you to select your favourite map, set a rent time and your credit card, PayPal or Steam wallet info and you'll be playing it right away!
And of course you want your friends to join in! That's why we're also offering Rent-A-Map TimeShare. Set the number of friends you want to share this map with and you can invite them straight into your game. You can get great discounts by using TimeShare: up to 25% for a 16-player Time-Share!
New useful features have been added to the game, such as the Rent-Timer widget! When your subscription to a map you are playing is nearing its end, a pop-up will automaticly appear on your screen. A simple click will extend your subscription by an additional hour, giving you enough time to finish the map.
We're currently converting all official maps to the Rent-A-Map system, which will be activated in the next update of Sven Co-op! Our awesome new feature will give you all the convenience and us the funds we need to continue creating high quality content!

We have completed a new entity (and engine interface) for mappers: "trigger_changesky", allows you to change the sky map at runtime. Demonstration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEgMs_RHXK4
Coming up in 5.21: Support for BSP subdividing of 512 up from 240, resulting in significantly less WPOLY requirements for big surfaces. Less WPOLY = more FPS + bigger maps! Normally I'd like to report good news concerning Sven Co-op to you but, sadly, this is not such occasion. Last week one of our senior developers, Adam, suffered a grave injury while working on our new bug tracking system. It turned out one of our repository servers wasn't correctly installed in its bracket and came loose and hit Adam on his pinky toe. While our lives as developers are mostly fun and games, moments like these make you realise how precious life is and how important workplace safety can be. While Adam held an icepack on his toe, we started discussing how our MOD's content doesn't reflect our newly found believes about safety in the workplace. Especially our cornerstone, the Half-Life campaign, is a terrible example of the use of safety measures and this is not how we would like to portray ourselves any longer. So, we'd like to present to you:
Nothing interesting ever happens on a Tuesday. Except for January 19th, 1999. This is when Sven Co-op beta 0.8 was released to the just recently formed Half-Life community. When it became clear that Half-Life (unlike its predecessors Doom and Quake) would not have a co-operative mode, the community took the task upon itself to fill the void Valve left behind. One of those people was Sven Viking. At this point, Sven Co-op was not much more than a proof of concept, or to put it into Sven's own words: "mostly just to give everyone an idea of what I'm doing, partly because of various bugs in the map that I don't know how to fix :)". At this point the mod consisted of only one map and a few scripts. Sven found help sorting out the initial problems he was facing and the few rooms that made up beta 0.8 quickly grew into a full fledged map, which was released in early May of that same year. This all happened 20 years ago, in a time when, for many people, going on-line was met with dial-up tones from your modem, playing games on low resolution software rendering and a latency of 300 ms wasn't something to complain about. Luckily for us all, technology has moved forward and so has Sven Co-op. Ever since that first map, SC has tried to push the boundaries of what is possible with Half-Life. We've seen thousands of maps, models and other custom assets made by our community members, millions of downloads and, most importantly, countless hours of co-operative game play fun! After two decades, Sven Co-op still has a steady and rich player base and a dedicated group of talented developers and we believe, especially since our standalone release on Steam in 2016, that there will be much more to look forward to in the future! Come celebrate Sven Co-op's anniversary with us by joining the servers and make sure to give "svencoop1" a replay for old times' sake. We'll be there! For the nostalgic or the curious, the original website from 1999 is available here. This is also where you can still find the original beta 0.8! -------- An update for Sven Co-op has been released. If you are running a dedicated server please use SteamCmd to update your servers. This is officially the first release to drop support for Windows XP/2003, Windows Vista/2008, and Linux with GLibC earlier than version 2.24. -- Sven Co-op may fail to work completely on those operating systems. More information
Hello everyone, We would like to take this opportunity to inform you all that as of our next release (5.18) Sven Co-op will no longer support running on various outdated operating systems. We do not have a release date for 5.18 yet, and to be honest aren't really in a position to consider a date yet, but we'd like to warn you all in advance anyway in case you need to plan any upgrades. We will of course mention this again in the 5.18 release notes, but please treat this as a final reminder. Part of the reason for this is Valve's decision to drop Windows XP and Vista support with Steam as of 1st January 2019. Also as we previously announced nearly 3 years ago this would be inevitable as operating system components begin to deprecate and remove older functionality, which is beyond our control. Using more up to date operating systems (and their underlying components) also offers us more opportunity to make the most of their functionality and efficiency upgrades, which ultimately ends up in a better product for all of you.

Due to changes made to the Angelscript API in the upcoming 5.11 release, we have made 5.11 available as a public beta so that authors can make adjustments to their scripts and ensure that they will work correctly for the next release. To opt into the beta, right click on Sven Co-op in your games list, go to Properties, open the 'Betas' tab, and select 'release_candidate_public' from the dropdown list. To reiterate the previous announcement, If your script(s) use any of the changed class members/methods, it won't work anymore in SC 5.11 and needs to be updated. You can find more details and a list of upcoming changes here: https://github.com/baso88/SC_AngelScript/wiki/API-Changes-SC-5.11 We'll gladly help you, should you have trouble with the changes. I'd like to ask if anyone still plays Sven Co-op on Windows XP, and if so, why? Microsoft ended support of Windows XP on April 8th, 2014. As such, Microsoft is no longer releasing updates or fixes for the OS. In newer versions of Microsoft's Visual C++ compiler (VS 2015 and up), players running Sven Co-op under Windows XP will experience a crash. It's something we experienced a while back in build 986278 and corrected by reverting to an older version C++ compiler for build 997953 and later. Unfortunately, some new features we're working on mandate an upgrade to our toolchain. We're caught between a rock and a hard place. ːsteamsadː If you check out the Steam hardware / software survey ( http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey ), the refreshing point is that most players won't be affected by this problem. Windows XP is only about 1.14% of the player base. Are you affected? Please share your thoughts below!

Our announcement of the addition of achievements to Sven Co-op was met with so much enthusiasm that the development team decided to pull an all-nighter and think up way more cool and fun achievements for you and your friends!
Earlier this morning we finally reached the ultimate achievement:
When we compiled all those achievements into our latest Beta build and loaded up the game, it completely crashed. It seems we achieved the unachievable: too many achievements for the game to handle. There was no other choice than to scrap the work we did and go back to the drawing board. Thus, sadly, the announced achievements will not be featured in the upcoming version of Sven Co-op. We figured that merely enjoying yourself while playing Sven Co-op might fill our players with enough sense of achievement already!
PS. April Fools ;)
Hello everyone,
Sven Co-op's move to Steam as a stand-alone game has not only given us the ability to supply you with instant updates, it also enables us to add achievements to Sven Co-op!

We're sure you're all going to love these! Of course we are open to suggestions for new achievements in the future, so make sure to head over to the forums and let us know!

Hello all, or particularly SvenDS server operators, A mailing list has been setup at the suggestion of our team member Duggles to help you server operators know in advance when updates are expected to go public. We will also try to include relevant notes in update announcements you may find useful for that particular release. You can subscribe (or unsubscribe) to the mailing list and view previous announcements here: http://www.svencoop.com/mailman/listinfo/svends_announce_svencoop.com This mailing list will not be open to public posts or responses. Please direct any discussions and queries you have to our server message board here: http://forums.svencoop.com/forumdisplay.php/39-Server-Hole There is probably little point of subscribing if you do not operate a full time Sven Co-op server. You will more than likely become bored of the messages, of which will often be technical and of little use to players. Thank you all for contributing to Sven Co-op with the server resources you have put in.

We initially had a problem with the release of the Dedicated Server and SDK tools on Steam. These should now be available for download.
Greetings everyone! Now that the release of Sven Co-op draws near, we've put out a guide detailing what the new Angelscript plugins can do. So for all server owners that want admin tools or other features on their servers, there is now a guide up under our Guides tab. It explains what Angelscript plugins are, loading them on your server and how to use them. Hope to see you at the release party!
To celebrate the launch on Steam, we're holding a release party on IRC.
On this day in 1999, two months after the release of Half-Life, I posted the first public version of the Sven Co-op mod to the Atomic Half-Life fan site. Now, seventeen years, thousands of custom maps, and millions of downloads later, Sven Co-op is about to be released on Steam as a stand-alone game.
Sven Co-op will be available to download for the bargain price of USD$0 this Friday, the 22nd of January! All donors past and present will keep their bonus features in the Steam version.
The stand-alone game includes many hundreds of features, fixes and improvements, as well as new maps and content. Valve have also kindly allowed us to include their original Half-Life campaign free of charge, playable cooperatively even by people who don't own the original game! New features have allowed the co-op version of the storyline maps to be reworked in a way that stays true to the original game while remaining challenging for multiple players.
Additionally, thanks to Valve providing us with a Goldsrc license, the team had been able to update the engine itself to allow Sven Co-op and its maps to surpass the limitations of standard mods. The Steam release will also allow for easy installation, frequent iterative updates, and eventual Steam Workshop support.
I wasn't closely involved in 5.0's development, but I remain in proud awe of the team's dedication and the countless hours of work put into accomplishing this Steam release. Ever since the first custom map (GargHunt) was created for version 1.0, Sven Co-op has also been a community-driven project. The SC team and I would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all the mappers, artists, server ops, donors, and others without whom we would never have come this far. We hope the new Sven Co-op SDK, scripting language, updated level editor and server tools will be of use to many of you as you continue to create endless imaginative content and generally keep the community running!
This 5.0 release is dedicated to Brent "BackAssward" Holowka, who left development and more important matters against his own will on October 9th, 2015. He is sorely missed.
The release candidate branch is now live with Subversion revision 5950 from our pre-release branch.
