Duke of Defense Is Now Available!

After Don't Sink I took a lot of time listening to feedback and did everything I could think of to improve on previous mistakes. Some of it was simple changes such as including custom controls and more story-based content. Overall what I learned was that I wanted to make a more tailored experience. One with memorable characters and humor. A lot of unique content instead of the rinse and repeat style of open-world game structure (not to say that is the case for every open world game). Duke of Defense is the first game I can say I am truly proud of. Topher (the musician/web developer behind Don't Sink) and I have poured every ounce of our being into this game. Even after we finished the game we sat and began work on additional post-game content. We would love to hear your feedback and find out how you feel about the new direction we've taken. https://store.steampowered.com/app/882210/Duke_of_Defense/

Official Release of Mac Support!

We have officially launched a build for Mac! We are excited to finally make the game available to more people. Unfortunately, we couldn't make this possible without making a small sacrifice. In the Mac version of the game, the camera is not able to zoom due to engine limitations beyond our control. As a result, the camera can not smoothly transition in some scenarios. This does not impact the core gameplay in anyway however, so rest assured that there's nothing stopping Mac users from becoming great pirates!

Hello ye salt lickers! I'm not sure what a salt licker is actually but I do hope this update finds you in good circumstances! We've added a BOAT LOAD (pun intended) of new content. Three new quests each with unique gameplay that includes quest specific islands, music, and DOLPHINS. That's right there are dolphins involved. You will find quests in Yaleshka, a treasure island, and Danier. We managed to fix a few game breaking issues too so there's that to look forward to if your game previously caught fire upon creating a new character. Lastly and one of the most significant changes is the balancing of ships which I won't go into detail about.

Storage caches and audio improvements! (Update 1.0.1.0)

Responding to your feedback!

A major issue with the late-game play of Don't Sink was the lack of storage (since we did the storage rebalance). To properly compensate for this (and to improve island building) we've added a new feature to the general store called a Storage Cache. This allows you to deposit/withdraw items from the store. Each store will have a unique cache meaning it isn't globally accessible. You can store 1000 bombs in Cramton and wood/cloth in Tsujima for example.

Audio improvements

One user pointed out to me that the boarding combat was lacking any sound effects. Turns out I completely forgot to program the sound effects for the combat. Topher had gone through all the effort of creating these sounds so I would like to personally apologize for overlooking this. Anyhow it's implemented now and makes poking pirates a lot more satisfying. New content & features
  • General stores storage cache
  • Storage upgrade for storage cache
Minor changes
  • Sword clashing sound effects for boarding
  • Ship creaking sound effects for travelling
  • When purchasing items the shop quantity limit now considers the ships max weight
Bug fixes and performance improvements
  • Fixed an issue with selling items that would return the player to the sell menu if the menu was scrolled up/down when there was only one item available to sell

Don't Sink official release! (Update 1.0)

Yaarrr! We've done it!

After 4 months of extremely active development we've reached the big 1.0! It has been a fun and rewarding journey so far. Sometimes it felt as though the game would never be out of early access but here we are. Here's what we've done for the full release.

A new trailer!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8cyph4E_7s

Gameplay/General Improvements

The enemy AI can use different ammo types now! You might face a schooner with grapeshot. Once they finish off your crew they'll switch to cannonballs/bombs and sink you. There are also a number of minor improvements such as the defeat tune not playing twice anymore. Little things like that.

The future of Don't Sink

We are working hard to get Don't Sink onto consoles as well as bring you (the Steam community) more features/content. This means more quests, possibly more indepth mechanics, and much more. We have a mod system in the works with a full tool to simplify the process and we would love to make that available in the near future alongside Steam workshop support. A number of users have experienced various performance issues and so we will likely be introducing a high-performance build (C++ based) in a separate branch to give those users a possibly better experience although previous tests have shown those C++ builds to be pretty unstable which is why we're not certain we want to make it available just yet.

New content and quests! (Update 0.9.4.0)

Finally, new content!

As we approach the big day (our transition out of early access) we have put more and more energy into game content. Three new quests means that the leaderboard percentages have been shifted and that there are new goals to reach for. There are about twenty new pirate crews and two new famous captains you may encounter. Who can forget good ole' Captain Babyhands?

New quest locations

You can find one on Gazpacho, one in Nikra, and the other in Mairyporan. However one of the quests is somewhat of a secret. We challenge you to find and complete it! New content & features
  • Quest, Hide Away
  • Quest, Something Odd
  • Quest, Dangerous Cargo
  • Little old lady in house on Black Shore
  • Gold thief on Tsujima
  • New houses in towns
  • Sound effects for all menus
  • New pirate crews
  • New famous captains
Minor changes
  • Added eye patch back into character creation
  • Sound effects for all menus
  • Balanced town music volume
  • Dolphins no longer appear during battle
Bug fixes and performance improvements
  • Default colors for various character parts would be black
  • Fixed misspelling of the word piece

The biggest update yet! (Update 0.8.5.0)

Coming up on full release!

We are taking the final steps to reach full release and one of the biggest issues was the ugly main menu left over from the original release of the game. We've recreated pretty much everything at this point. We still have a number of improvements planned for the next update but this one is meant to be stable, and full of beautiful new artwork. Some of the most notable changes include the new loading screen and main menu. We've got a new leaderboard, quest menu, quick menu, build menu, govern menu... Yeah there's a lot of new stuff in this update. Hop aboard your ship and find out for yourself! New content & features
  • New pause menu UI
  • New main menu UI and artwork
  • New leaderboard UI
  • New quick menu UI
  • New quest menu UI
  • New loading screen and intro
Minor changes
  • Rigby's Treasure, "Shut up Heater" changed to "Shut up Heather"
  • When selecting a name from the credits, the link now opens in your browser if the Steam overlay is disabled
  • General store now shows current owned stock of an item

  • Item deduction from ship purchase optimized and crashing resolved

More new UI coming soon!

We have fixed a few bugs since the last update but more importantly, we've focused on taking the final steps to complete the new UI. The biggest changes were obviously the shops and travel section of the game. The next set of changes is easier but still will take some time. In the meantime enjoy these previews of the new less ugly UI!

New shops and improved gameplay! (Update 0.7.7.0)

New GUI and functionality for shops

At last we have finished the new GUI and oh boy is it easy on the eyes. There isn't a whole lot to say about it but you'll definitely enjoy it more than the old UI.

Gameplay improvements

The cargo capacity of ships has been reduced drastically which makes managing your items much more important. You'll find that the general store takes note of the weight of items and will help you avoid any hassle sorting through items you can't purchase. Islands no longer gain population as quickly now that we've made citizen recruitment available. This makes island building a lot more fun and involved. New content & features
  • New general store UI
  • New tavern UI
  • New shipyard UI
Minor changes
  • Reduced population growth rate by 70%
  • Back button on map can now be clicked
  • Player and enemy ships now fire slightly more accurately
  • Removed twitter and twitch buttons from main menu (Twitter links are still active in the credits menu)
  • Reduced the cargo limits of every ship (on average the reductions were anywhere from 90% or more)
Bug fixes and performance improvements
  • Made nearly all saving asynchronous, should prevent/reduce stuttering for most users
  • Tavern crew feed option now deducts gold properly
  • Shipyard repair option now deducts gold properly
  • You can no longer attack an island you own
  • Removed old unused scripts/assets (reduces memory usage)
  • Quick menu and quest menu are disabled while transitioning between rooms
  • Quest menu and GUI can no longer be active at the same time which prevents overlapping
  • Map can no longer be interacted with once an action begins
  • General stores now account for ship weight limitations and will behave properly
  • Item giving/removing functions now include ship weight functionality

Hotfix 0.7.6.1, crashes fixed!

We've seen numerous reports of an error that occurs when fighting quest-based captains and famous captains (sometimes). This issue has been resolved in the latest hotfix. Make sure you're up-to-date and have fun dominating the seas! We're also working on resolving a few sprite issues with the combat but that will likely have to wait until the next build is finished. Bug fixes and performance improvements

  • Crash occurs when facing famous/quest-based pirates
  • Tsujima/Nikra are backwards on the map

Famous Captains New Map UI! (Update 0.7.6.0)

New Map UI!

The map was due for a tune up and we just decided to tear it apart, and do it from scratch. Now it's more functional, practical, and easy on the eyes.
Following this we will be implementing new UI for the general store, tavern, and shipyard. You can expect to see those changes coming in the next update.

Famous Captains

Here's why these captains are awesome. They each have unique dialogue, smarter AI, and even can be faced directly when boarding (meaning you'll be able to fight the captain yourself, not just a random crew member). They also drop extra gold compared to other crews in their class. They are fairly rare but you are sure to come across them as you progress through your pirate career. [/img]

Updates take time!

Compared to when we first released Don't Sink our updates have slowed town quite a bit. This is mostly due to the massive amounts of work required to rebuild the UI. In both the art and programming department, a single menu can take a week's worth of work. We just want you all to know that we are working hard and have some other exciting features in the works. New content & features
  • New map UI
  • Famous pirates (7 so far)
  • 1 new travel cutscene
Bug fixes and performance improvements
  • Journey distance bar goes past end
  • Scrolling through feeding UI causes items to be forgotten when off the menu

Discord Dissonance, Bug Fixes! (Update 0.7.4.0)

Discord Rich Presence

This update brings with it the addition of Discord's Rich Presence feature! What is that you ask? It is a dandy feature of Discord (the IRC software) that provides details about the game you are currently playing.
We've set it up to show some minor updates about what you are doing in Don't Sink. Pretty cool right? Obviously you can disable Rich Presence in your Discord settings if you would like. This is an optional feature. Credit for the Game Maker implementation of Discord Rich Presence goes to Babyjeans (rousr)! Links to his information below. Patreon Itch io Twitter

Important bug fixes

Turns out ships have been dropping tons of beef and water for pretty much no reason at all. There was also some memory leaks and mismatched information that could occur when boarding ships. All this has been resolved and so you can expect more stability. New content & features
  • Quest, Rigby's Treasure (Mairyporan, Shipyard)
  • Discord Rich Presence (Thanks Babyjeans)
Minor changes
  • Black Shore now has black sand
  • NPCs walking around islands will no longer stand near interaction locations
  • Boarding combat can now show specific characters via quests, for example you might talk to someone, board them, and actually fight specifically that person
Bug fixes and performance improvements
  • Progress bar on the travel screen would keep going after the end when it's fading to the island screen
  • Fixed quest related ship battles only showing four crew members in some cases
  • Fixed issues regarding boarding an enemy and quitting
  • Fixed issues regarding boarding an enemy from a quest
  • Item lists for pirate ships were being modified improperly, often would add beef/water to item list

As we've discussed a lot recently... we have been working almost entirely on a UI overhaul. This is the first step of many to bring the game up to snuff and really make it shine. Below are some screenshots pulled from the Steam store page (which was recently updated).

New quests and/or other content?

We're trying to fit time in for new content but obviously with a team of three it isn't easy. You can expect another update in the next few days with some new content (hopefully)! New content & features
  • New Random Event UI
  • New Travel UI
  • New Ship battle UI
  • Font management added internally to allow custom fonts for non-supported letters/characters, this will help translations down the road
  • UI improvements in other various parts of the game
Minor changes
  • Resized all fonts to be accurate to the 1:1 scale
  • Island discovery screen improved
  • URLs open in browser if Steam is disabled
  • Replaced victory/defeat screen with title font
  • Reduced the size of text buttons when selected
Bug fixes and performance improvements
  • Ship weight is updated when a saved game is first loaded (previously would not load until you were first given new items)
  • The blur shader used when pausing will be bypassed if it is not compiled properly

As always... stay salty sea dogs!

Trading cards, profile backgrounds, and emotes are now available!

Just another quick update! We've finally got around to adding Steam trading cards! Special thanks to Thirteen (Pixel wizard, first of his name, heir to the throne of wizard city) for creating the amazing scenes shown in the cards/backgrounds and the dandy emotes of course! Lastly we've updated the store page to reflect some of the new changes coming in the next few days.

Upcoming UI overhaul and various improvements!

We have finally reached a point in development where we feel that we are ready for our UI overhaul. Thirteen (pixel wizard and first of his name) has spent the past few weeks carefully designing and drawing up the new UI seen below.
These new designs are meant to improve the functionality and visual aesthetic of Don't Sink. Not only have menus been given completely new art assets but they also have been rewritten (reprogrammed) from the ground up to improve both performance and feel.
No stone has been left unturned as we've spent many hours carefully planning and executing the new UI based on both our own experience, and feedback provided by you, the community!

Mod tool and Steam workshop, tell us your opinion!

We are interested in creating a modding tool and providing users with an easy solution for installing mods via Steam workshop. However we do not want to spend precious time on a feature/tool that nobody is interested in so we are looking to get some feedback and hear what you think! Here's a list of the modding features (things you can modify) we've come up with so far!
  • Crew and/or Ship stat reset on island arrival
  • Item hunger, thirst, and morale (overall modifier)
  • Crew hunger, thirst, and morale drain rate
  • Overall gold modifier
  • Specific item hunger, thirst, morale, weight, and gold cost
  • Cannonball, bomb, and grapeshot damage/accuracy
  • Damage done by sword in boarding combat
  • Ship hull hp, sails hp, speed, carry weight, and cost
  • Island income/cost modifier
  • Custom clothing and hair/beard
  • Custom colors

When's the next update?

We generally have a timeline for updates or at the very least a due date for the upcoming build. At the time of writing we plan to get a new build out to you by February 26th, 2018. It will include many of the new UI changes and hopefully some more content.

As always... stay salty sea dogs!

Huge rebalance and improvements! (Update 0.7.1.0)

Major gameplay changes!

We spent some time this week on improving the core gameplay and improving the general feel of the game. Previously people were able to burn through all the content and capture every island within just a few hours of gameplay. One of the most notable changes is that stats no longer reset when you arrive on an island. The pacing of the game is much better and it is very apparent after playing for a few minutes. You no longer are forced into the crew feeding menu every now and again. Instead you get to choose when you feed them.

New UI changes on the way!

Thirteen (Daniel) is working on creating the new UI for Don't Sink. Currently the GUI looks like it was glued together by some programmer... cough cough
New content & features
  • Quest, Fur Butt
  • Steam achievement, Furry Friend
  • Steam achievement, Pirate Hunter
  • Man of War vessel to be added to some islands, Gazpacho, Frigidov, and Mairyporan
  • Tavern allows you to feed your crew
  • Shipyard allows you to repair your ship
  • Made crew feeding a player action instead of an event
  • Crew/ship stats no longer reset between trips
Minor changes
  • Tooltip screen for boarding combat (similar to ship combat)
  • Game saves on transaction (buying/selling)
  • Closing the pause menu will save and apply audio/video settings
  • Travel tooltip reminding the player to feed their crew
Bug fixes and performance improvements
  • Population setting (game restart) sometimes caused crash
  • Delivery quest should point to a new island after delivery instead of pointing to the previous island
  • Boarding music played at full volume regardless of music volume setting
  • Town music sometimes played when quitting to main menu

As always... stay salty sea dogs!

Boarding Combat Performance Build! (Update 0.7.0.0)

Boarding combat is here!

Ever wanted to jab your enemy right in the gut and then watch them fall to pieces? Of course you did and now you can!
We have been working on this feature for just over two weeks and we finally have finished implementing it. We need your help to ensure it isn't full of bugs and it is enjoyable for most people. I (Seabass) have tested it pretty excessively but you never really seem to find the bugs while testing. We hope everyone enjoys this new feature!

High performance build (YYC)

We are now distributing the game with a high performance build. What's the difference you ask? The standard build uses bytecode and runs in a VM (virtual machine) while the YYC build is compiled down to C++ and machine code. If you have a weak CPU the YYC build might just pull you above 60 fps. New content & features
  • Boarding combat
  • Population video setting added, allows you to lower the number of, or disable background characters
  • YYC compiled build available to Windows users (2x - 3x faster than the default executable)
Minor changes
  • Boarding an enemy ship and winning will give the player 11% of the remaining enemy crew
  • Auto-feeding improved
Bug fixes and performance improvements
  • Reduced port screen VRAM usage by 2.6MB
  • Pausing uses a lot less GPU and system memory
  • Quest GUI optimized slightly (15% faster), item strings are split only once instead of every frame
  • Z-buffering disabled to improve performance
  • Clicking video settings would cause the settings file to be written to twice
  • Island capturing results will now show after quest pop-ups to avoid overlapping messages
  • "Broken bones" quest, when picking up supplies it would display the wrong item pop-up
  • Leaderboard positions no longer overlap with user names
Balance Changes
  • Ships have less cannons and more health

As always... stay salty sea dogs!

New Video Settings and Balancing! (Update 0.6.1.0)

Supporting the potato PC

Many people don't have insane $1,000+ gaming PCs and often they are forgotten. We want to make sure Don't Sink can run on any potato, even old ones. This update brings two new video settings which we will discuss below!

Lighting LUTs

LUT stands for Look Up Table and all it really does is take the color of a pixel and convert it to another color using the LUT as a guide. This allows us to render vibrant scenes using nothing besides a texture and a single shader. It is extremley performant but there are two weaknesses. A single LUT (for example our morning colors) require a 4096x4096 (48mb) image to be kept in memory. When it is drawn the GPU takes a bit longer (when compared to other sprites in the game) to draw the image due to its size. For a slow GPU a single LUT can be fairly expensive to handle. When transitioning between various times of day, two LUTs are drawn per frame. This means the LUTs are even heavier at times. There are two settings available for LUT Lighting:
  • Disabled - LUTs are cleared from memory and are not rendered
  • Enabled - LUTs are kept in memory and are rendered
LUT enabled shown on the left, disabled is shown on the right.

Parallax Detail

Parallax details are shown in the background and currently include passing ships, clouds, and light rays. At a glance these don't seem like they would hinder performance however due to the size of some images the various sprites are on separate texture pages which results in three additional texture swaps. Aside from the cost of rendering, the details also require a tiny bit of processing power to update their various logic. There are four settings available for Parallax Detail:
  • Disabled - No details are generated or rendered
  • Low - Only passing ships are enabled
  • Medium - Passing ships and clouds are enabled
  • High - Passing ships, clouds, and light rays are enabled (and anything else)

New content & features
  • LUT video setting added, disabling will remove the LUT textures from memory and prevent the LUT shaders/rendering to be performed
  • Parallax video setting added, non-required textures will be removed from memory and various details will no longer appear
Minor changes
  • Each island is now more/less effective from each source of profit so that trading, mining, and farming aren't the same
  • Auto-feed is now more efficient
  • Tooltips function like text boxes now
  • Crew stats reset on islands
  • Storm random event only damages sails
  • New quest pop-up stays around too long, reduced by 30%
  • Sleep margin timer changed from 1ms to 10ms, this should cause the CPU to stay saturated and avoid power-saving related performance issues

As always... stay salty sea dogs!

More Islands, Quests, and Good Stuff! (Update 0.6.0.0)

Improving town balance

It's nearly impossible to predict how players will utilize a mechanic in an open-world/sandbox environment. Towns were originally intended to be something you could do for side revenue but most users tend to make towns their main objective. As a result we are slowly making towns more profitable and easier to manage. For example islands were being captured by pirates far too often so we toned back the chance of that happening. We've also increased the effectiveness of town defenses which can further reduce the chance of an island being taken from you.

Quality of Life

While we aren't near to the full release of Don't Sink yet we do consider the game to be a playable product and as such are making efforts to improve the experience no matter how small the change. There is now a tooltip pop-up when you begin ship combat for the first time that explains the controls and gives a simple tip. We've added a buy/sell all button for shops in this update to help make the late game faster paced and less annoying. It's hard work shopping for a crew of 250! Thanks to a community suggestion we took the shopping category of the quick menu and merged it in with the base menu for governing. We will continue to make changes like these moving forward. New content & features
  • New island, "Yamakoshi"
  • New island, "Yaleshka"
  • New quest, "Broken Bones"
  • New cutscene, "Yamakoshi Mountains"
  • Revamped intro and loading screen
  • Tooltips added for combat when it's your first fight
  • Recreated and added new character sprites (may negatively affect performance for low-end computers)
  • New pirate crews added, 9 in total
    • 3 Schooners
    • 1 Corvettes
    • 1 Caravels
    • 1 Brigantine
    • 1 Naves
    • 2 Galleons
  • Changed buy/sell menus to include the following:
    • +10
    • -10
    • Buy/Sell all
Minor changes
  • No more ship encounters or random events right at the beginning of a trip
  • Sea Bully quest changed to make (the) Sea Jerk more likely to appear
  • Quick menu no longer has the sub-menu "Shop", instead all buttons are listed from the base menu
  • Enemy ship AI won't attempt to board unless they have the same amount of or more crew than the player
  • Improved character shadows indoors
Bug fixes and performance improvements
  • If game was paused during battle, travel music track would begin to play when the game was resumed
  • Selling items would occasionally return the wrong amount of gold
  • Resolved mixed up gender sprites
  • Fixed possible crash when defeated during ship combat
  • Gamepad interface setting is disabled unless a controller is plugged in
  • Starting up the game with the gamepad set as the input interface but no gamepad plugged in will default to keyboard input
Balance Changes
  • Reduced chance of islands being captured at lower attack risk percentages
  • Island defense more drastically decreases the rate that attack risk increases
  • Mining Camps and Farms are much more effective and trading has been reduced to 25% of its original effect
Community Additions
  • The user Khaesho made the suggestion that the "Shop" sub-menu be migrated into the quick menu and that enemy AI doesn't try to board you when they have less crew
  • New pirate crew, "Seas" the Day added as requested by baneofpain823
  • New pirate crews, The Naughty Buoy, Schooner Or Later, Somefin Fishy, and Doofish Brigade added as requested by colormecurious
  • New pirate crew, Booty Smacker added as requested by Taco_Guitar
  • New pirate crew, The Black Dawn added as requested by noonyx33
  • New pirate crew, If It Ain't Broke added as requested by baneofpain823
  • New pirate crew, The Big One added as requested by Captain Fantastic

Development news! #2

Change of plans

We've heard the community and what people want most is content. In response to this we have decided to put off GUI changes until later on in the development cycle. The upcoming build will include mostly content and feature additions. One major feature you can look forward to is the ability to capture islands. Since it's a key part of the gameplay it only made sense to get it implemented sooner instead of later. By doing this the overall experience is much more dynamic and expansive.

What's done so far

We've got unique music for each region, improved delivery missions, and a ton of backend changes. In the previous post we talked about a massive code cleanup that would greatly improve development time. Well that bit is already finished and so far it has made a world of difference. Most importantly cutscenes have been changed internally to allow less code and more content! Previously a cutscene would require upwards of twenty minutes to properly program/write which was absurd considering the amount of content we want for in the game.

Development news! #1

If you purchased Don't Sink then you already know we usually push updates once a week. Over the course of the next month you will likely not see any major changes come up if we even push any updates. Rather than continue to push minor content updates for the next month we are going to be recreating all the GUI elements and possibly other (currently unavailable) gameplay. During this time we will continue to post our progress.

Why does GUI take so long?

The current GUI scales 1:1 with your resolution meaning it doesn't work like a normal GUI. Our new GUI will have pixel perfect sizes meaning a 1:1, 2:1, 3:1 ratio for example. You'll also likely see scaling choices added to the video settings so playing in 4k (3840x2160) isn't completely impossible.

Code cleanup

During this time we'll also be focusing on cleaning up the projects assets/code. The game has a lot of cut corners (in the code) that are causing a bit of extra work every day. Cleaning up the project will allow us to move forward faster in the future and let us bring you even more content in each update.

As always... stay salty sea dogs!

Steam Leaderboards! Delivery missions and more! (Update 0.3.5.0)

The water got better

Before we talk about anything else... isn't that water just 10x better?

Another big update

We aren't stopping! This week you'll discover two new islands, delivery missions, Steam leaderboards, and lots of general improvements. Leaderboards are a great passive aggresive way to say to your friends, "I'm the best pirate ever". It's also a good way to show strangers on the internet that you aren't to be scuffled with.
On a side note check out these new sliders! No more toggling through volume levels.
While this update doesn't bring any new side quests it does bring a whole new dynamic quest system. Delivery missions are available from time to time and can be acquired by speaking to Generalstore owners. The pay is decent and a lot of the time the destination is near where you were heading anyways.

What about future updates?

Our focus is primarily on content right now but that doesn't mean we aren't looking to improve gameplay or the user interface. Next week we'll begin fleshing out brand new UI for the game (no more ugly paper panels). New content & features
  • New island: Niragua
  • New island: Danier
  • Added controls menu, you can now change the gamepad deadzone and interface detection mode
  • New enemy ships: 7 Brigantines, 8 Naves, 7 Galleons
  • Delivery missions are now available if you talk to Generalstore owners
  • Implemented Steam leaderboards for the following: "Gold collected", "Gold spent", "Travel distance total"
Minor changes
  • Water reflection quality drastically improved, most notably on the high setting
  • Ship fires grow to normal size and holes fade in instead of just popping in to existence
  • Implemented new sliders for future GUI
  • Replaced volume buttons with sliders
  • Reduced the speed that time passes on islands to an extremely low rate
  • The arrow above the player in towns isn't shown in the water reflection anymore
  • Repositioned the main menu and pause menu buttons
  • When primary quest GUI is disabled the gold GUI now shifts to the right side of the screen
  • New quests are no longer set as your primary quest automatically
Bug fixes and performance improvements
  • Map data is now cached when the game is first launched instead of being parsed every time you open the map menu
  • Island updates were being written to the wrong data structure, may have lead to serious issues for some users
  • Resolved crash on the generalstore sell menu that would occur if you sold everything you could
  • Gameplay/Video settings save when changed but Audio/Controls require you to press "Apply Changes"
  • Island saving no longer is triggered when loading a saved game
  • Reduced island save files to 1kb instead of 64kb which should speed up saving drastically
  • Reduced memory usage by 64kb per island
  • Pausing no longer flickers when it is first activated
  • Removed legacy synchronous saving from new game creation
  • Pressing "B" on the controller exits the quest GUI menu now
  • Lost Lovers side quest no longer lets you interact with the final trigger twice (can't turn it in more than once)
  • Player could still use ship battle GUI when prompted for a response to an action
  • Player gold is added properly in random events
  • Quest logic loop bug fixed
Balance changes
  • Grapeshot has a 75% (used to be 50%) chance to kill a crew member
  • Changed the travel speed of every ship to be a bit faster (Example, Schooner used to be 125%, now it's 130%)

Update 0.3.0.0, Side quests, GUI improvements, and more!

The big week one update!

This update adds a boat-load of new stuff. Obviously you can read over the changelog below so we'll just highlight the major stuff here. We've created a new translation tool to simplify the process for everyone in the community. (Thanks Topher!) This means that the current translations are broken and have temporarily been removed. We'll be slowly uploading them as they are replaced with the new versions. After seeing how people have been playing Don't Sink we noticed a few issues with the GUI and so have addressed those problems accordingly. You'll notice the changes within minutes of playing and we promise you'll like it. Lastly we added a two new side quests and a quest menu. New content & features
  • New language parsing system and tool, translations are much easier to do now
  • New quest menu GUI
  • New side quest, "Lost Love"
  • New side quest, "Message In A Bottle"
  • Asynchronous saving implemented to reduce hiccups in performance

Don't Sink, now available on Steam!

Don't Sink is now available on Steam!

Hey everyone! We're exploding with excitement as Don't Sink has just officially gone live! We have done a lot of playtesting leading up to today so hopefully nobody runs into any serious issues. It is our goal for this early access process to be an enjoyable experience for players. We have a public Trello with live updates shown as we make progress. There is a subreddit where you can reach out to us if you prefer using that over the Steam Community Hub. We even have a Discord if you would like to talk more directly to us and others in the community. We look forward to hearing how everyone feels about the game and what they would like added/changed. You can expect us to read and reply to as many posts as we possibly can.

Additional languages

We do not officially support any languages besides English, however the following community translations are currently available in the game available:
  • Spanish
  • French
  • Polish
  • Portuguese
  • Swedish

A Sandbox-Adventure-Pirate-RPG that takes inspiration from Pirates of the Carribean (2003 video game), FTL: Faster Than Light, and Sid Meier's Pirates but makes certain to stand out on its own.

  • Explore a massive world with unique islands and landscapes. Discuss rumors and discover the origins of each island by talking to the people that live there
  • Expect the unexpected when at sea. Events you may be unprepared for may occur such as a foodborne illness among your crew. You'll need to have access to the right supplies and have the experience to keep your ship afloat
  • A casual but real challenge - While simple to pickup and understand, there are numerous events that only an experienced swashbuckler will be prepared for. This makes the game more satisfying for long term pirates
  • Thoughtfully executed cutscenes that help to bring the world to life as well as reward pirates that explore

  • Sailing between islands is necessary to expand your control over the world and to increase your reputation
  • Tending to the morale, hunger, and thirst of your crew will require you to maintain a supply of food/water and consider whether or not rationing food is required during long journeys
  • Governing islands you've conquered is a difficult responsibility as you will need to solve economic issues before they get out of hand
  • Purchase larger ships as you fight your way through the sea. Famously powerful vessels such as the Galleon and Man of War are but a few of the available ships
