Checking In: Report #44

Greetings, fellow Magnates! Welcome back to another exciting update on the progress of Hotel Magnate. As always, we're thrilled to have you here with us as we delve into the latest developments of Hotel Magnate. In this Checking In Report, we've got some progress to share regarding our ongoing work on cleaning management and the upcoming disasters and consequences update. So, without further ado, let's dive right in!
Cleaning Management:
As mentioned in our last post, we've been hard at work refining our cleaning management system. We understand the importance of keeping your hotels pristine and your guests happy. That's why we're rolling out a separate update soon, dedicated solely to improving cleaning management. We're on the brink of entering private testing, which means you'll soon have access to better tools to prevent some of those pesky consequences that can arise from less-than-stellar cleaning routines. While the bulk of our work is nearly complete, we're still fine-tuning the user interface. There's a lot to consider as we add more interactions and decision-making processes to how cleaners go about their daily routines. Rest assured, we're working tirelessly to ensure that managing your hotel's cleanliness is as seamless and intuitive as possible.

We have added a new "info view" where you can see the cleaning states of your different rooms. This will be accessed from the toolbar at the top of the screen. The different states represent whether the room was cleaned according to your chosen cleaning schedule. You can also set here which housekeeping facilities are responsible for which rooms.

Clicking on those states allows for a few options like adjusting the cleaning schedule for that room or manually requesting a cleaner come and clean it now

We have also moved the lighting information and the new cleaning information to a new location where you can manage these settings in one place for the whole room. (cleaning is managed at a room level and not per facility). For cleaning you can set a priority and adjust its schedule where you choose how often in the day it should be cleaned. These points throughout the day are when 'orders' are created to come clean the room. its up to you to make sure enough staff are available to fulfill these orders.

All of these features and more should give you a lot more control in your cleaning routines. We are also working on making sure that the default settings for these rooms are good enough that new players or people who care less about the management of them won't be too impacted.
Disasters and Consequences Update:
Now, let's talk about the disasters and consequences update. We've been gathering feedback from our incredible community, and we're hard at work designing a robust system that will truly put your management skills to the test. While we're still refining the details, it's looking like the most likely features to be included are fire, vermin infestations, and the dreaded food poisoning (gastro). We want to keep you on your toes and ensure that running your hotel is anything but predictable. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to fine-tune this exciting addition to Hotel Magnate!

Update #13: Groups and Day Guests

Hey there, Magnates! It's time to gear up for some game-changing updates! We've got some fantastic features lined up that will transform the way you run your hotels. From the introduction of Guest Groups and Day Guests to some news about the upcoming Disasters and Consequences update! This update should bring a lot more life to your hotel with the bonus of more income! There have also been significant performance improvements and bug fixes, so let's get into it!
Guest Groups:
You asked, we listened! Introducing Guest Groups - the feature you've all been asking for! Say goodbye to solitary guests and hello to groups! With Guest Groups, your hotel rooms will be bustling with activity as multiple guests check in together. Whether it's a squad of friends or a lovey-dovey couple, there's room for everyone! And guess what? More guests mean more Income! Get ready to rake in the cash as your hotel becomes the ultimate hotspot.

With great guest numbers comes great responsibility. You'll need to expand your staff and improve your management as you will have more mess to clean up. Guests will now also walk hand in hand together, do activities together in their rooms and more!
Day Guests:
But wait, there's more! We're not stopping there, oh no. Say hello to Day Guests - the cherry on top of your hotel management sundae! These vibrant visitors may not be spending the night, but they know how to make a splash. Brace yourself for an influx of energy and cash flow as Day Guests flock to your facilities. From indulging in gourmet meals to pampering themselves at the spa, these visitors mean business. Get ready to amp up the atmosphere and pad your pockets in the process!

Day Guests and groups were both highly voted for on our Voting Platform, so dont forget to vote on or suggest features that you think the game needs the most!

Below is a screenshot of a much busier Gym facility due to Day Guests (You may need to expand a bit)
Coming Up:
We've been diligently working on new features while awaiting the completion of animations and testing for this update. As we gear up for the major upcoming update, "Disasters and Consequences," brace yourselves for the potential chaos of fires and vermin wreaking havoc in your hotel! But fear not, Magnates, as we believe in balance. Alongside these looming challenges, we're equipping you with new tools to mitigate risks and maintain your establishment including the ability to designate and plan cleaner tasks with precision. Better cleaner and maintenance management have long been player requests, and we're thrilled to implement these improvements.

With better staff tools already in the pipeline and being implemented, we might just treat everyone to a dedicated update sooner than anticipated. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to elevate your hotel management journey!

Thanks for your support and happy building!

Checking In: Report #43

Greetings, Magnates! It's time for another update on the progress of Hotel Magnate. In this fortnightly dispatch, we're diving into two topics: the latest developments in Day Guests and Groups, as well as a sneak peek at the upcoming disasters and consequences update. But that's not all we've got a special treat for you, as we've just published an early version for public testing on Steam! So, grab your toolkit and let's explore what's in store.
Day Guests / Groups:
We're thrilled to announce that an early testing version of our guest groups is now available for public testing on Steam! While this iteration is packed with exciting features for Day Guests and Groups, there are still a few missing animations we're ironing out. We'd love to hear your feedback as you explore the new content and help us identify any lingering issues or bugs. Your input is invaluable in shaping the future of Hotel Magnate, so don't hesitate to dive in and lend us your expertise! You can test it out on the experimental branch on Steam, instructions about how to access and participate in the testing are on our Discord

Below are some sneak peaks of the animations for Guest Couples (these are not yet in the testing version)
Disasters and Consequences Update:
As we delve into the realm of disasters and consequences, we're empowering players with greater control over room maintenance and cleanliness. With potential calamities like fires or rat infestations looming, it's crucial to ensure that players have the tools to mitigate these risks. That's why we're revamping the staff management system surrounding Cleaning and potentially maintenance, allowing you to dictate which rooms are cleaned, how often, and under what conditions. This level of granularity grants you unparalleled control over the upkeep of your hotel, ensuring that critical areas remain pristine and well-maintained. As we continue to fine-tune the design details of the disasters and consequences, we've decided to get working on the staff management changes in preparation. They are already well underway and if they are completed soon enough they may end up in their own mini-update before disasters and consequences.

Checking In: Report #42

Greetings, fellow Magnates! It's that time again for another exciting update on the progress of Hotel Magnate. In this fortnightly news blast, we'll be delving into some developments, from the Day Guests and Groups to our tireless bug-fixing efforts. Plus, we'll give you a sneak peek into the design of our future updates, including some potentially disastrous consequences that may shake up your hotel management strategy. Unfortunately due to an illness this week, this post has been published a day late and is light on new screenshots (also because it's hard to screenshot solved bugs)
Day Guests / Groups:
Since our last update, much of our focus has remained on refining animations to ensure that guests interact seamlessly and authentically within your bustling hotel. While awaiting the final touches on these animations, we've redirected some of our attention towards other vital areas, including laying the groundwork for future updates and tackling pesky bugs. Rest assured, though progress may be subtle, every moment spent perfecting these animations and fixing bugs brings us closer to delivering an immersive experience for you all!

Here is a screenshot showing a very busy gym with all the extra groups and day guests.
Bug Fixing:
Our quest to squash bugs continues with fervor! Thanks to the invaluable assistance of some eagle-eyed users who helped us pinpoint and replicate persistent building bugs that have been haunting us for quite a while. We've been able to implement and publish targeted fixes so be sure to check out the changelog for our latest hotfix release, detailing the improvements and optimizations we've made to enhance your gameplay experience. Your feedback and bug reports have been instrumental in guiding our efforts, and we're committed to ensuring Hotel Magnate is as polished as possible.
Future Update Designing:
We've been thrilled by the enthusiastic response to our upcoming update discussions. Your input and suggestions have been invaluable as we chart the course for Hotel Magnate's future. While we're still finalizing the details, it's looking like disasters and consequences will mainly be centred around fiery infernos to stomach-churning food poisoning and pesky rat infestations, the stakes are higher than ever as all of these could lead to the death of your staff or guests. Rest assured, we're carefully balancing scope and feasibility to deliver a well-rounded update that stays true to the spirit of the game.

We are excited by some of the suggestions around theft and security but we may end up having to include such a system later on as we do not want to over-promise with this update. Fire, Food Poisoning and Rats all tie very well into the existing systems like cleanliness, maintenance and staff skill/tiredness. We will also most likely improve some of the staff management tools like being able to designate priorities for which rooms to clean/maintain first. This will help you to be able to prevent some of these disasters from happening.

Keep the feedback coming through Steam discussions or our Discord channel your ideas could shape the future of Hotel Magnate!

Stay tuned for more exciting updates, Magnates! As always, thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm for Hotel Magnate. We couldn't do it without you. Happy hotel managing!

Checking In: Report #41

Hey there, fellow Magnates! Welcome back to another update on Hotel Magnate. This fortnight, we've got a lineup of updates that will surely keep you on your toes. From interactions between Day Guests to squashing pesky bugs, and even a sneak peek into what's on the horizon, there's plenty to dive into. So, let's jump right in and see what's cooking in the world of Hotel Magnate!
Day Guests / Groups:
It's no surprise that we've been diving into the realm of Day Guests and Guest Groups. We've been busy polishing up animations to make guest interactions even more lively and immersive. Imagine guests strolling hand in hand or sharing a laugh together as they explore your meticulously designed hotel. Plus, we've been fine-tuning the mechanics to allow multiple guests to stay in a room, ensuring your accommodations are always bustling with activity. And to top it off, we have been working on the UI, making it easier than ever to keep track of who's part of a group.
Bug Fixing / Optimisations:
While we're eagerly waiting to unveil new animations, we've been tackling some pesky bugs and optimizing the game for smoother performance. From guests finding themselves in rooms they shouldn't be in, to ensuring they prioritize room accessibility. Plus, we're addressing issues like wonky sliding door animations and guests piling up/stacking at certain points, ensuring your hotel runs like a well-oiled machine. With these and some usual performance optimizations, your hotel management experience will be more seamless than ever before!
Future Update Designing:
But wait, there's more! We're already gearing up for our next big update, and this time, we're diving into the world of disasters and consequences. Picture this: fire outbreaks or vermin infestations wreaking havoc in your pristine establishment. It's all about the consequences of neglecting maintenance and cleanliness or any other system. We're still in the brainstorming phase and would love to hear your thoughts on what consequences should be included. Floods? Food poisoning? The possibilities are endless, and we're excited to hear your ideas! Drop us a comment here, join the discussion on Steam, or hop onto our Discord server to share your suggestions.

Checking In: Report #40

Greetings, Magnates! It's time for our latest check-in, and we've got some progress to share with you all. Last week, we rolled out Update #12, featuring the highly anticipated elevators, along with the introduction of gym guests and spa guests, so unfortunately we don't have too much more new stuff to show off today. We have also been making strides with guest groups, a feature that's shaping up to be a game-changer. So, without further ado, let's dive into the details!
New Update (#12):
This week we were thrilled to announce that Update #12 is published! Elevators have finally arrived, alongside gym guests and spa guests, enhancing your hotel management experience like never before. The implementation of these features was guided by your valuable input through our Feature voting system and community feedback. Remember, your voice matters if you have suggestions or ideas, don't hesitate to vote on our website or share them on Discord and Steam discussions. We're all ears!
Guest Groups:
Our work on guest groups is in full swing, with the backend nearly complete. As we gear up for the next update, guest groups will take center stage alongside day guests. While there are still some edge cases to iron out and animations to fine-tune, we're excited about the potential these dynamic groups will bring to your hotel. Get ready to welcome groups of friends and couples, adding a new layer of depth to your management strategy.
Day Guests:
We've also begun laying the groundwork for day guests, a feature designed to inject even more life and revenue into your hotel. Unlike regular guests, day guests won't leave reviews or have traditional experiences. Instead, they'll contribute to the bustling atmosphere of your establishment and make use of your facilities for a fee. Plus, we're exploring the option to toggle day guest access for specific areas of your hotel, giving you even more control over your business. Stay tuned, as day guests and group guests are poised to make their debut together in the upcoming update. (Sorry we do not have more screenshots to share this week)

That's a wrap for this update, Magnates! Keep those creative juices flowing, and don't forget to share your thoughts and ideas with us. Your feedback is invaluable as we continue to shape the future of Hotel Magnate together. Until next time, happy hotel building!

Checking In: Report #38

Hello fellow Magnates!

Get ready for something new and exciting! Every two weeks, we're dropping by to give you a friendly update on what's going on behind the scenes at Hotel Magnate. Think of it as our way of having a casual chat over a cup of virtual coffee. We'll spill the beans on our progress, the bugs we're squashing, and the cool plans in the pipeline. Kicking off at Update #38, this series picks up where our pre-Early Access reports left off quite a while ago. These posts might be short and sweet or a bit more detailed, but the aim is the same to keep you in the loop about the state of Hotel Magnate. Release/Update posts will go into more detail about what is included in the update.

Thanks a bunch for being a part of this journey with us!
Report #38

Elevators:
Following all the voting and support on the voting platform we have been working on Elevators! We have added a fairly simple implementation of elevators that allows for elevators to be placed off-center to the ones above or below, which should help allow for more complex builds and for any issues where the player places the elevators incorrectly. We are currently doing internal testing and tweaking and hope to enter public testing (alongside new guest types) very soon.
Spa and Gym Guests:
We have also been working on Spa and Gym guests and Facilities. Spa guests is nearly ready for public testing and should be published alongside Elevators in our next update. Gym guests is quite far along as well and will be introduced in the update following Spa Guests/Elevators. Spa guests will bring new furniture like a sauna, sensory deprivation tank, nail salon and more! Below is a teaser screenshot of some of these furniture objects.
Guest Groups:
Following strong demand from our voters and fans, we decided to increase the priority of and start work on adding in Guest Groups, which is essentially allowing multiple guests to use the same bedroom and arrive as a group. At this point in time, we are adding two types of groups, groups of friends and couples. This should bring a lot more life and challenge to your hotels. We aim to have this feature added alongside Gym Guests. We will talk more about this feature soon!

Update #11: v0.8.11 - Roll the Dice with Casino Guests + Level Up Your Staff

Roll the Dice with Casino Guests & Level Up Your Staff

Hey fellow magnates! We've got some thrilling news to share with you in our latest update. Get ready to roll the dice and play your cards right as we welcome a brand new guest type to your luxurious establishment - the Casino Guests! They're all about high-stakes fun and entertainment, and we've transformed your hotel to cater to their every whim.

But that's not all! We're also delving into the world of Staff Skills and Traits. Your staff members are now more unique and skilled than ever before. These additions bring a new layer of complexity to your hotel management.

Join us as we dive into the details of this exciting update.
Casino Guests
We're thrilled to introduce a new guest type that's all about living life on the edge - the Casino Guests! These folks are on a mission, and that mission is pure entertainment at your casino. They're not here for the spa or the gym; they're all about high-stakes thrills and big wins.

To cater to their unquenchable thirst for excitement, we've added an array of brand-new casino furniture and activities. You can now deck out your hotel with roulette tables, sports betting TVs, blackjack setups, craps tables, the Big Wheel, and a handy chips/token teller station.

For Casino Guests, the casino is their kingdom, but they might occasionally crave a refreshing drink or a top-notch bedroom to recharge before hitting the tables again. So, keep those bars well-stocked and ensure your rooms are cozy enough to entice them back to the gaming floor.

Naturally, with these new casino features, you'll require more specialized staff to manage the gaming tables and the chips teller station, ensuring your guests' top-notch gaming experience. So, prepare to welcome your Casino Guests and turn your hotel into the ultimate gaming hub. Roll the dice, deal the cards, and build your thriving casino empire!
Staff Skills & Traits
Each staff member can now boast up to three unique skills, and each of these skills can be honed up to six levels. The higher the level, the more effective the skill becomes. To level up, staff will need to utilize the new Staff Training Desk. But here's a heads-up: skill training takes some time, so careful planning is crucial when investing in your staff's growth.

These skills have a direct impact on your staff's performance in specific roles. Some skills will make them excel in some jobs, while others will be better suited to other jobs.

In addition to skills, each staff member comes with up to two innate traits that define their character. Traits can represent qualities like being lazy, fast, grumpy, or more. These traits significantly influence how your staff perform their duties and interact with guests. They add an extra layer of complexity to your staffing strategy, making each hiring decision a more nuanced one.

Our hiring process has undergone a facelift. When recruiting new staff, you'll now have a choice of three candidates. Once you hire one, they are removed from the pool, and you're left with two options. But don't worry, the pool isn't static; every few days, the oldest member is replaced with a fresh face, keeping your options fresh. If you're in a hurry or seeking specific skills, there's also an option to spend some funds to 're-roll' the selection and replenish it immediately (but this can be very costly).

All of these changes infuse the staff scheduling and management system with depth and decision-making. Your choices now carry more weight than ever, as you strive to assemble the perfect team to run your hotel efficiently. Get ready to dive into the fascinating world of staff management and lead your team to success!
Feedback and Voting
Don't forget to join us on our Discord, where you can chat with fellow fans and the devs, and also vote on and suggest ideas, features, and issues on our Voting Platform. Your input is invaluable in shaping the future of Hotel Magnate.

And that's not all! We're eager to learn more about who's playing Hotel Magnate and why. To make this game even better, we're conducting a Brief Survey. It'll take just a moment of your time, but it means the world to us. Your feedback is what keeps us rolling out exciting updates and enhancements.

Update #9: v0.8.9 - Lively Guests, Cleanliness Woes, and Furniture Galore!

Hey fellow Magnates! We're here to break the silence and deliver some exciting news! Behind the scenes, we've been diligently working on our biggest update yet. We hope you'll be pleasantly surprised by the way this update transforms your gaming experience. This overhaul also paves the way for us to deliver more exciting content in the future.
Staff Management Changes
As we had discussed in our last sneak peek post, the previous staff management system often left you feeling frustrated due to limited control and inadequate staff information. However, those days are now a thing of the past! We are thrilled to introduce a cutting-edge scheduling system that enables you to effortlessly assign staff to various different facilities and roles. Need a receptionist during the morning and a bartender for the evening? Consider it done without any hassle!

We have future plans to expand this system by introducing a range of staff skills and training options. This feature aims to further differentiate staff members from one another, ensuring that they are better suited for specific tasks. Stay tuned for these upcoming enhancements that will challenge your staffing strategies and provide an even more immersive experience!
Guest Types and Improvements
Remember when we talked about bringing more life and variety to your hotel with new guest types? Introducing two new guest types that are sure to shake things up: Party Guests and Travelers. Let's start with the Party Guests who know how to have a good time! These guests love to dance, drink, and socialize, so make sure you have a decent area dedicated to partying if you want to attract these lively individuals.

On the other hand, we have the Travelers. Travelers are your ordinary guests who are simply passing through (very similar to how guests behaved previously). While they may not demand much, they also won't be willing to pay as much for a room compared to other guest types. So be prepared to offer them a more budget-friendly option. Get ready to witness a bustling hotel with guests engaging in a wide range of activities. You'll see them playing pool, dancing, throwing darts, and much more.

But that's not all, folks! We have even more exciting updates in the pipeline. In future updates, we'll be introducing additional guest types and enhancing the existing ones with Fitness Guests, Spa Guests, Casino Guests, Pool Guests, and Business Guests. Each of these guests have their own unique requirements, needs, and expectations.

To make your management tasks easier, we've revamped the guest detail menu. Now, you can easily access information about each guest's specific requirements for both facilities and bedrooms. Additionally, we've introduced the Guestbook, a handy tool where you can find a wealth of information about different guest types.
Loudness and Dirt
To add a new layer of interaction and potential conflicts between our diverse guest types, we're introducing two exciting systems: Loudness and Dirt.

With the Loudness system, guests engaging in specific activities and certain machinery and objects in the hotel will generate noise. Keep in mind that different guest types have varying degrees of noise tolerance. While some guests are noise-tolerant, others are highly sensitive to even the slightest sounds. Rest assured, however, noise will travel through walls but gradually diminish with distance.

In addition to the Loudness system, we're implementing the Dirt system. As your guests and staff move around the hotel, they will leave behind traces of dirt and mess. Each guest type has their own threshold for messiness, so effective management of your cleaning staff is crucial. For example, a business traveler seeking a quiet drink may not appreciate the mess left behind by rowdy partygoers. To ensure everyone's satisfaction, consider strategically placing your lively facilities away from the more serene areas, maintaining a balance that keeps all guests happy and comfortable.

To help identify what areas of your hotel are causing guests problems, you can now cycle through visualizations of where your guests have been having good or bad experiences around your hotel.
New Furniture
To compliment guest types, we have added an array of new furniture for you to mess around with:

We have also added a variety of new plants!

And why not add the highly requested new doors and windows? Discover how fans have requested and voted on this new addition later in this post.
Hotel Reputation & Attraction
The satisfaction or annoyance of different guest types directly impacts their reviews, which in turn affects your Hotel Reputation. Picture this: your hotel becomes famous for specific things like epic parties, business excellence, or fitness bliss. This reputation attracts more of the corresponding guest type you're known for. Keep an eye on your Hotel Attraction score, as it's a reflection of your reputation that includes modifiers/effects from things like reviews and marketing campaigns.

Now, check out the screenshot below. It's the Guest Type Overview menu, your go-to guide for a breakdown of each guest type. Dive into their attraction score, assigned bedrooms, average reviews, and more. This menu is your secret weapon for a quick overview of all your guests and could be useful in understanding where youre doing well or what you could be doing to maximize your guests' experience.
Progression & Financial Balancing
Based on valuable player feedback, we've taken a fresh approach to simplify our progression systems. We heard you loud and clear - the old method of advancing through Hotel Star Levels and accumulating Hotel Points (to unlock stuff through the catalog) was becoming a drag. So, we've bid farewell to both systems and embraced the power of Financial Balancing as the new gatekeeper for hotel growth and quality improvements.

Now, here's the deal: you can welcome higher star guests anytime you want, but you'll need to ensure you have the right facilities and top-notch amenities to keep them satisfied. Negative reviews from dissatisfied guests can impact your reputation with that guest type, so be prepared! As you move up the star ladder, acquiring the necessary furniture, facilities, and skilled staff will all come at a higher cost. This means you'll have to flex those financial management skills and plan ahead like a pro.

To enable this change, we've fine-tuned the cost of things and the income you can generate from rooms. This major iteration of the financial balancing system is just the beginning. We eagerly await your feedback, as we'll be constantly improving and adjusting this system to deliver the best hotel management experience possible. Your input matters, so don't hesitate to share your thoughts with us!
Feature Voting
We have officially implemented a new feedback and voting platform for handling player feedback and suggestions. The community has really embraced this system and we are so glad to see so many ideas, requests, and feedback.

We have already identified some features that we decided to bring forward due to community voting. Some of these features include the new Beach Location and our teams research/investigation into other features like Elevators and Guest Groups.

If you have any ideas or would like to vote or comment on existing suggestions, you can visit here to do so. The platform is user-friendly and does not require an account to use (although an account will allow you to easily track the progress of things you voted for or suggested). You can upvote the ideas you want to see implemented sooner and downvote the less important ones, giving us a clear idea of what everyone wants.

Don't forget to join us on our Discord where you can chat to other fans and the devs! We are really looking forward to hearing everyone's feedback and for you all to try out this update!

Coming Soon: A First Look at Our Latest Update

We know we've been a bit quiet lately, but trust us, it's been for a good reason! Behind the scenes, we've been working tirelessly on our biggest update yet, and it's going to change the game in ways you never imagined! While the update isn't quite ready to push, we couldn't resist giving you a sneak peek of what's in store.
Say Hello to Staff Management 2.0
With our previous staff management system, you were left feeling frustrated with little control and even less information about your staff. But those days are gone! We're introducing a brand new scheduling system that lets you assign staff to different facilities and roles with ease. Want a receptionist in the morning and a bartender at night? No problem!

(Work in Progress UI)

Why make this change? It's all about reaching new heights for your hotel. Your staff will shine in their designated tasks, allowing you to optimize their schedules. Plus, you can save some green while you're at it! By assigning roles as necessary, you can minimize downtime and keep your hotel humming like a well-oiled machine.
Get Ready for Some Guests!
We were tired of boring, generic guests, so we upped the ante and created 6 distinct types of guests for you to attract to your hotel: Fitness Guests, Spa Guests, Party Guests, Casino Guests, Pool Guests, and Business Guests. Each of these guests have their own unique requirements, needs, and expectations. Managing your hotel carefully will be key if you want to have different guest types coexisting.
Facilities and Fun
To complement these more distinct guest types, we're bringing even more diversity to the facilities and activities your guests can enjoy. As you may have guessed, the new guest types align perfectly with the updated facilities you can build in your hotel. For instance, party guests will flock to the bar while spa guests will head straight to the spa. Of course, guests can still visit other facilities, but their preferred choice will be aligned with their guest type.

However, keep in mind that not all guests will enjoy the same things. It's important to consider this when managing your hotel, especially if you plan on attracting multiple guest types. For example, a business guest might seek a quiet drink at the bar after a long day, but if a group of party guests are creating a ruckus, they might not appreciate the atmosphere.

(Work-In-Progress | Some of the furniture might be added over subsequent updates and could change visually)
Furniture Frenzy
We wanted to make these facilities feel more lively, so we brought in some amazing artists to create tons of new furniture and activities for guests to enjoy. From pool tables and saunas to laser lights and rowing machines, the update will include at least 40 new items, including a plant model revamp.
Loud and Dirty
To make these different guests interact and potentially conflict with each other, we're adding two systems: Loudness and Dirt.

Noise will be generated by guests engaging in certain activities and by certain machinery and objects in the hotel. Some guest types are noise-proof, while others are sensitive to even the slightest sounds. Don't worry though, noise will travel through walls but will eventually fade away with distance.

Your guests and staff will leave a mark as they move around your hotel, leaving behind dirt and mess. Similar to noise tolerance, each guest type has their own threshold for messiness, so be sure to manage your cleaning staff effectively. A business traveler seeking a quiet drink might not appreciate the mess left behind by rowdy partygoers, so consider placing your lively facilities away from the more serene areas to keep everyone happy.
Hotel Reputation
When you satisfy or annoy those different guest types, they will leave a review accordingly which will affect your Hotel Reputation. Essentially, your hotel can become known for certain things like partying, business, fitness, etc. This means that, whatever your reputation becomes, you can attract more of a particular guest type.
Feature Voting and Suggestions
We've recently implemented a new platform for handling player feedback and suggestions for Hotel Magnate. If you have any ideas or would like to vote or comment on existing suggestions, you can visit Here to do so. The platform is user-friendly and does not require an account to use. With features like filters, tags, and search tools, we can easily navigate through the suggestions. You can upvote the ideas you want to see implemented sooner and downvote the less important ones, giving us a clear idea of what our players want most.

Don't forget to join us on our Discord where you can chat to other fans and the devs! We are really looking forward to hearing everyone's feedback and for you all to try out this update!

Update #8: v0.8.8 Steam Workshop & Utility Changes

Update #8: v0.8.8 Steam Workshop & Utility Changes
Hello, fellow Magnates! We have a slightly different update for you this month. Along with a few small adjustments and improvements to systems like the Utility System, we are proud to release our first update for our Steam Workshop integration!
Steam Workshop
Following our last update where we added Furniture Grouping and Sharing, we decided to make our first Steam Workshop update. This update will have the added ability to share your templates/groups and download other players' creations.

While we were working on this, we also decided it was a great time to allow people to upload or download custom wall and floor textures! We have created a guide for the process of uploading or updating player content to Steam here. There will also be a guide on the Steam community page.

We are very excited to see what everyone will share and cant wait to test them out ourselves!

Special thanks to Discord users Zizi & Caelum for testing and creating some wonderful items for people to try out!
Utility Changes
Following some wonderful player feedback, we have made changes to how utilities are balanced. Previously, you could only place one generator/pump to supply your hotel with water and electricity. This would sometimes lead to players running out of power and water with the only solution being to heavily optimize your utility system or wait until you could upgrade your generator/pump. We tried to increase the amount of power and water these generators/pumps provide on multiple occasions, but we have admittedly struggled to find a good balance.

Our solution is to now allow multiple generators/pumps to be bought and placed. The cost of these generators/pumps, however, is now much higher but will encourage players to optimize their utility system in their hotels. Higher-quality generators will require less maintenance and provide more power, meaning it will be more beneficial to replace your generators/pumps when you can.

We thank all of our fans who have provided feedback for this system and more. Your help is essential for us to create the best game possible. If you have any other feedback, suggestions, or ideas then please feel free to join us on Discord or post on our Steam discussion board.

Update #7: v0.8.7 Experiences, Moods, Requests, Bankruptcy & More!

Hello, fellow Magnates! Just over one year ago, we entered Early Access and what a journey it has been - we couldnt have done it without your help! We have listened, gathered feedback, and implemented a whole lot of changes to make Hotel Magnate the best it can be! To mark this special milestone, we have added some highly requested systems like bankruptcy/loans, more creative mode options, furniture grouping & sharing as well as a much improved Guest Review and mood system.
Guest Requests, Expectations, Experiences & Reviews
We have done a near-total rehaul of how guests experience your hotel, including how you interact with them and how they review your hotel. The old system was a little clunky and ambiguous about how some of the scores were generated or where in your hotel they were having bad experiences.

Guests will now sometimes create Requests when they encounter something they dont like. You will be alerted of this request by some icons in-game as well as in the warning/alert menu. Generally, the guest will want you to fix the problem within a certain timeframe. If you solve the issue, the request goes away. If you fail to solve the issue, the guest will have a bad Experience. This essentially gives you a chance to fix an issue before it negatively affects your guests or reviews.

Guest Request as displayed on the guest

Guest Requests as shown in the new warnings UI

Guest Expectations are essentially a small list of things a guest will want to achieve or do during their stay at your hotel. It is best to try and satisfy all of these Expectations for your guests as they heavily affect how the guest review is calculated.

Guest Detail UI showing the Experiences and Expectations

As mentioned before, failed requests will create a negative experience for guests. Other negative and positive experiences will also be generated throughout the guests stay at your hotel. They could be things like:
    I had a great meal.
My bed wasn't high enough quality.
Or even, I couldnt find a toilet and had to go on the floor.

Both Guest Expectations and Experiences are then used to calculate a guest review. You can now easily see a breakdown of the various reviews in the reviews menu; understand what went well and what didnt, allowing you to make better decisions on how your hotel is run.

    New reviews screen

Currently, reviews affect the amount of guests that come to your hotel. In our next update, we will be expanding upon the guest spawning and marketing systems which will see some changes in how guest reviews affect your hotels performance.
Guest Moods
One of the most exciting features in this update is the improvement of Guest Moods. While our last iteration of guest moods was working and did affect guest behavior, we have drastically improved upon it. Guests that are sad or angry will now have different animations while walking/standing.

    New sad guest walking animation

We have also introduced a new state for guests where - if they are angry - they might end up walking around your hotel damaging or dirtying furniture. They will sometimes walk around shouting at or complaining to other guests, causing them to become unhappy as well.

A very angry guest destroying items and causing mayhem

If you mismanage your hotel, things can easily spiral out of control as guests destroy or damage your hotel, leading to more disgruntled guests and further property damage. We hope this feature will bring an extra level of management (and chaos) to the game.
Creative Mode
From the abundance of feedback we received about our creative mode, we have made a few adjustments and improvements. Firstly, creative mode will now be unlocked for players when they reach their first 3 star hotel instead of a 5 star hotel. The reason we have (and had) this limit is to make sure players experience the normal game mode and learn the base mechanics before moving on to the more unlimited creative mode. Unlocking creative mode at 3 stars rather than 5 still ensures the player experiences a normal game mode.

Secondly, we have enabled the ability to toggle different features on/off when starting a creative mode game. This includes features such as Utilities, Money, the Catalog, Hotel Star Rating, Maintenance, and Objectives. Now, you will have a more tailored playthrough of the game and create the kind of scenarios you want.
Bankruptcy & Loans
Gone are the days when you could spend endlessly with very little consequence! You will now have to watch how much you spend, and on what, as we are finally introducing bankruptcy and bank loans! You will no longer be able to purchase any new objects or build any rooms once you have reached $0 or below. At that point, you will either have to take out a bank loan, sell some furniture, or both!

You will not be charged interest on your bank loans, but you will be charged a % fee on the remaining amount you owe. Make sure you spend your borrowed money wisely to best increase your income and dig your way out of your financial hole!
Furniture Grouping & Sharing
For all those building and decorating fanatics, we have finally introduced the long-awaited and requested tool of being able to group, save & share furniture. This is the beginning of our implementation of allowing user-generated content and modding. Being able to create, save and share your custom creations will hopefully assist and inspire people to create even more beautiful hotels!

Grouping some furniture and saving it as a template

You can then load your templates back into your hotel (or other hotels)

While you will have to manually share these saved groups with each other for now, we will be adding steam workshop integration in the near future. The folder where these are stored is adjacent to your savegames folder.

Update #6: v0.8.6 Improved Textures, More Guest Activities, and Bug Fixing

Hello fellow Magnates! It has been a busy couple of months with this update and weve mostly centred our work around visual upgrades, bug fixing, and polish. We also have been doing dual work on our next update.
Improved Textures
This update saw several improvements in how we handle wall and floor textures. Firstly, we made adjustments to all of our textures in an effort to better reflect our art style (in addition to ensuring consistency).

We then created normal maps for several textures. Now, these textures will be able to catch light in a variety of ways. To achieve this, we made some adjustments to the shaders we use for both walls and floors which took up a significant amount of time.

As you can see, these textures now catch light differently under changing lighting. There is still a bit of work to do around the light direction - mainly when a texture is indoors and under ambient light - but the effect this already creates is a great improvement over the flat textures we had before.
More Guest Activities
We have added in a round of new guest activities! Watch carefully and you might see some guests dipping their feet in the pool, meeting for a chat in the bar, using more of the equipment in your gym or enjoying the heat of a fireplace!
Whats Cooking Now?
Our next update - which we have been working on for a few weeks already - will introduce the concept of Guest Requests, Checklists, and a more robust Guest Mood System. All three of these features are meant to help and increase player-to-guest interactions. In other words, the player will have to spend more time managing and looking after guests to ensure they have a good stay.

Make sure your guests dont fall into a bad mood, otherwise they might start causing trouble in your hotel! There will also be some work done on Guest Reviews. Our aim is to make these reviews more transparent so you can understand why guests scored the way they did.

Additionally, well be introducing the much requested Loans and Bankruptcy. Essentially, you will not be able to go into debt the same way you can now. Once you run out of money, you will be stopped from placing/purchasing anything until you sell some items, take out a loan, or both! This should add a new level of difficulty and will require careful planning around the growth of your hotel.

You can always check out our Public Roadmap on Trello if you want to know what's coming up!

Update #5: Progression System, Utilities, Mac & More!

Update #5 v0.8.5 Progression System, Utilities, Mac Build & More!
We have been busy since our last update with our most game-changing update yet! We are introducing a new Utilities System (where you need to supply your hotel with water and electricity), new furniture, a Mac version, and a progression system that will change how you experience and progress through the game. There will also be a Creative Mode for people who just want to build to their hearts content.
Progression System
We received plenty of feedback since the Early Access launch and, after extensive analysis, we have implemented a new Progression System. It works similarly to other research systems in games of the same genre. We wanted to help slow the game down in a meaningful way while giving the player more self-imposed goals and rewards.

Instead of just unlocking a giant group of furniture at each star level, the player will earn Hotel Points by having guests stay overnight and leaving positive reviews. These points can then be spent on unlocking new furniture items, facilities, or management tools. There are over 140 individual nodes to unlock which are divided into tiers. You cannot unlock something from the next tier unless you have unlocked at least one node from your current tier.

We anticipate that this newfound Progression System will not only increase replayability, but will vastly improve the overall gameplay experience.

For players that just want to build creatively, we have also added the highly anticipated Creative Build mode where everything is unlocked and the money is unlimited! Creative Mode can be unlocked by completing the normal game mode and reaching star level five.
Utilities
To bring more challenges to both the management and design side of Hotel Magnate, we have added the Utilities System! This means that you will need to supply all of your electrical and water requiring objects with the correct utility. You will first need to place a Generator and a Water Pump, followed by water/electrical distributors, to distribute these utilities to objects.

Each type and quality of distributor has its own capacity value. Once its capacity is maxed out, it will not be able to supply anything else in its range. A distributor has a circular range around it that is divided into two. The outer section of its range has a higher connection cost; this essentially means that objects further away from the distributor cost more to connect. Therefore, it is beneficial to keep distributors close to the objects that need them.

You dont want to keep them too close, however, as guests will get annoyed if they find pumps or switchboards in their rooms or hallways. You must also ensure that these objects are maintained correctly or this could lead to some disastrous results, including upsetting your guests.
Mac Build
It has been a long time coming, but it's finally here! Hotel Magnate is now available on Mac! There were a few unforeseen challenges for us - such as getting the game notarized and approved by Apple - but we are very glad to say it is finally done! In the process of getting the game to Mac, we have also set up new methods for gathering information on game crashes and critical errors which should help us identify some of the rarer problems and issues that are harder to reproduce.

As the new Mac version is very new, there may be a few undetected bugs. We ask that, if you discover any bugs, issues, or have feedback, please use our in-game reporting system or talk to us on our Discord server so we can work to address it.
New Furniture
To accompany our new Progression and Utilities Systems, we have plenty of new art assets. We are very happy to once again be making new art assets/furniture for everyone to enjoy! As we have been working on our Art Style Guide and pipeline the last few months, the process should be a lot faster and we will hopefully see more assets coming out in the future.

The first lot of new assets are the Utility-oriented ones which include generators, pumps, distributors, and hot water boilers.

The second lot of furniture contains new shabby furniture to offer greater choice and variety earlier on in the game.
Languages
Following requests from players, we have added French and Portuguese translations to the game! These new language options and our existing ones (German & Chinese) are partially generated using a text translator, so there may be sections where the translation isn't 100% correct. If you encounter any issue like this, please report it either through our in-game reporting system or on our Discord.
Fixes
Update #4 0.8.3.7 - New Location & Progress Update

Update #4 0.8.3.7 New Location & Progress Update
Hello fellow magnates! As promised, we are releasing an interim update with a new location to play in as well as some general fixes. This isnt a huge update for most, but we hope it will keep everyone entertained until our next update which will be focused on utilities (water/power management).
Desert Highway
We are excited to release our first new location: Desert Highway! It has taken a while to set up our workflow in order to create new locations, but it will now enable us to add new locations faster in future updates. We also had to do a lot of backend work with how these locations work so that we are able to set up different lighting, audio, guest types, etc. for each location.

We look forward to bringing you all many more locations in the future!
Upcoming Features
This month we thought we would include a little section detailing some of the upcoming features that are being worked on currently. Firstly we are very close to having a Mac version available, we are just going through the process of getting the application approved by Apple.

In our next feature update, we will be introducing the Utilities system. This is essentially the management of water and power to your hotel which will bring some interesting challenges and decisions to how you build and run your hotel.

We have also made significant progress in adding our new progression system which will reduce the importance of your hotel star rating and will allow you to take your hotel in different directions and choose which furniture/tools to unlock.

Dont forget to check out our Feature Roadmap to see what is in store or join us on our Discord where you can discuss these features with other fans and the developers!
Community Updates
We will hopefully be bringing back more community feedback events (like the community feature vote) soon and hopefully in a better, more open-ended format. So stay tuned!

We would also love to announce and share a new partnership with one of our most dedicated fans Zizi who makes tutorials and guides for Hotel Magnate. Her creations are fantastic and you should definitely check out her Youtube and Twitch.

    Content Update #3 v0.8.3 - Multi-Level Building, Day Guests & Lighting

Multi-Level Building, Day Guests & Lighting

It has been a busy couple of months, but our biggest and most requested update yet is here! It has been quite a challenge with lots of technical and design hurdles to overcome, but we are very happy to give everyone the ability to now build vertically across multiple levels. As interior rooms are now more obscured, weve also decided to add in room lighting along with day visitors to fill up your facilities and help fund your new expansions!
Multi-Level Building
The biggest feature in this update is multi-level building! This latest addition will allow you to build your hotel upwards to a maximum of 16 floors. To give your guests some extra room, you are now also able to build a new type of wall: railings! You can now easily build balconies and outdoor areas using this new wall add-on.

With these additional features, there is now the concept of ceilings. When you build a room, a ceiling is created above it (which you can see when going up levels). These ceilings can be colorized but, of course, cannot be walked on or used by your staff or guests.

In order for these areas to be used by your staff or guests, it will need to be enclosed by a wall or railing.

Another tool that we have added is the ability to remove floors to create multi-level open spaces (you cannot remove a ceiling). As seen below, you can use this tool to create large lobbies or mezzanines. You can access this tool from the floor editing menu.

2: Remove Floor 3: Restore Floor

To get your guests and staff up to these levels, you can now add stairs! In the future, we will be adding elevators. Please keep in mind that stairs do not currently work well when used outside as they need to connect to a room above them.

We have been very excited getting this new feature ready for everyone and we cant wait to see what everyone builds with it! Be sure to join us on our Discord or Steam discussion page to give any feedback, if you have it!
Lighting
To accompany the changes with multi-level building, we needed a better way to light rooms and the surrounding area. This led to us working on a way to lighten up rooms that was visually appealing but still very performant. You now have to place lights in rooms to make sure there is enough lighting for your guests.

You can view the lighting information for a room via the light info button on the room detail menu.

Windows also provide light for a room, but only during the day. This means you can use a combination of both windows and artificial lighting to illuminate certain rooms. We have also worked on the lighting for the outside and surrounding environments. This includes a more picturesque sunrise and sunset color palette.
Day Guests/Visitors
To help fill out everyone's new expansive hotels (and to help fund them), we have enabled day visitors! Essentially, people will now visit your hotels facilities without staying the night. So expect to see a lot more people dining in your restaurants and drinking at your bars.
This system should bring plenty more guests to your hotel, making it easier to keep your restaurants, bars, and similar facilities profitable.

Dont forget to leave a review for us on Steam if you havent already and join us on our Discord where you can chat with us and other fans!

Content Update #2 v0.8.2 - Room Duplication, Staff Tiredness, Pools & More!

Room Duplication, Staff Tiredness, Pools & More!

It's the first Tuesday of the month and that means it's Hotel Magnate Update Time! We are excited to bring these updates to you as they will make building easier and offer more in-depth management.
Room Duplication
One of the most highly requested features by the community is now ready! Room Duplication won our first community vote and is the largest feature in this content update. This feature allows you to copy a room with all of its contents (furniture, colours, windows, and any assigned facilities).

Room duplication will allow for quicker building and will remove some of the hassle of having to construct multiple rooms with tedious replication. You can utilize this feature by clicking on the duplicate button which is on the top of the room detail menu.
Staff Tiredness
Another feature weve added to the game is staff tiredness and scheduling. Your staff members will now get tired as they work, meaning that you will need to build a staff room for your employees to rest or they might fall asleep on the job! You will most likely need to hire more staff for your facilities to cover when people are on break. To help manage when your staff works, we have added a staff scheduling system where you can set the number of staff members you would like to work per hour at a facility.
Pools & New Furniture
Finally! Its time to let your guests cool off with the addition of pools! More work will be done in the future with adding more pool types, visual effects, and animation, but we are very happy with the initial result and look forward to seeing how everyone uses them.

Along with pools, we have added a whole series of top tier furniture to round out the selection for 5 star hotels.

We hope these options will give players further choice and creativity in creating exciting new hotels.
Performance Improvements
We have also put significant work into increasing performance, especially around saving/loading times and reducing the potential for crashes. For example, a hotel with a huge amount of freeform objects saw its loading time drop from 20+ min to around 2 min. While most hotels wouldn't take that long to load, there should still be a noticeable improvement in these times while playing.
Community Vote Winners
The winners of our second community feature vote are Multi-level Building & Extra Locations! These two features (and a few others) will be included in our V0.8.3 Update. While we try to release updates on the first Tuesday of every month, the complexity of these features - along with the holiday season - means that v0.8.3 will be released in February. We will however try to release something smaller in January, it just won't be a major update...but stay tuned!

To participate in Hotel Magnates discussions and votes, join us on Discord. You can even join our Steam discussion board where you can talk to the Devs and other fans!

Content Update #1 v0.8.1 - Room Pricing, Gambling, and More!

Hello fellow managers! Welcome to the first content update after our grand opening! We have received a lot of player feedback and have been hard at work with fixing issues and adding new features and furniture.
Room Pricing
One of the biggest features youve been requesting is control over room costs for guests. We were already thinking this might be needed and, along with everyones early feedback, we decided this should be the first major update to the game after the Early Access Release. Now, you will be able to set the daily rate/cost of a room. Additionally, you will be able to set the default prices for bedrooms in relation to your hotels star rating (this makes things more streamlined).

Be careful when changing the prices of your rooms! You might end up scaring away guests which could mean less money for your business.
Gambling Changes
Along with room pricing, we wanted to give more financial control by adding the option to set the win rates/ratios/amounts on slot machines and poker tables. You now have the power to:

    • Set the hotel win ratio
    • Set the ratio at which the guest will get a jackpot
    • Assign the jackpot amount/value
    • What the minimum bet is
Guests will be extra happy when they win, have increased needs for other activities, and guests with the gambling trait will want to play more.
Vending Machines & Mini-bars
Another feature weve added is the ability to choose what items are stocked in vending machines and mini bars. You will even have the power to set the cost for items! This update lends itself to having a more balanced and interesting economy for players. It is also a step towards having guest preferences on food, so be sure to pay attention to what your guests are finding satisfactory.
Guest Traits & Portraits
Guests now have the chance to spawn a range of different traits or tags which will help determine their behavior and decision making when visiting your hotel. Some of these traits include: gambler, alcoholic, slob, and clean freak.

Traits like gambler or alcoholic will affect how a guest decides between purchasing another drink or continuing to gamble. Traits like slob or clean freak will help determine how a guest evaluates or reviews the quality and cleanliness of their room. We plan on adding more traits in the future that will add depth to the game, even traits that reference what type of food guests prefer or their decorative style preferences. Along with these new traits, we now generate and save a portrait for your guests. We hope that this little detail will help make your guests more personable.
New Furniture & Wall Textures
To help everyone create more diverse and interesting hotels, weve added 20+ wall textures to the game! We aim to keep adding fresh textures and designs to give you maximum creative freedom. Weve also added:

    • A new shabby (level 1) vending machine
    • A new exceptional (level 5) bed and toilet
We recognized that there was a lack of level 5 furniture when players unlocked it, so here is a taste of what is to come!
Community Feature Vote Winner!
The other week, we conducted our first community feature vote to determine which feature (out of a choice of 3) will be included in our next content update (v0.8.2).

The winner, by a large margin, was duplicating rooms!

This will enable you to copy whole rooms - including windows, doors, and furniture - and place them accordingly. This feature will allow for bigger hotels built in a shorter time frame while also offering easier gameplay for those whod like it. We will be conducting community votes regularly, so be sure to join our Discord so you can vote! Dont miss out!
Building Competition on Discord
We have been so impressed by the screenshots and videos of your hotel empires, so much so that we are hosting another building competition! Head to our Discord for information on how to participate and win!
Changelog:
Over the last month we have received over 2500 in-game reports/feature requests (approx. one report every 15 min) and many more reports through discord and steam discussions/reviews. We have read every single one and addressed around 95% (excluding feature requests). We really value everyone's help and assistance in identifying and reporting these issues and cannot thank you enough!

    [ 2021-09-25 00:12:54 CET ] [ Original post ]

    Update #37: Customisation!

It has been a busy time since our last update post, we took a lot of feedback from our QA testing and free demo and have been hard at work. Along with a huge amount of small improvements and bug fixes we also added a progression system, furniture colouring, advanced furniture movement, new furniture items, new windows/doors, music and improved the building system further.
Furniture Colouring
The feature that has been most requested is now ready! You can colour nearly every single piece of furniture whatever colour you want. This gives you the option of drastically changing how a piece looks and feels.
New Furniture/Windows
In this update we have added a whole bunch of new furniture along with lots of new windows and doors (including double doors) that you are also able to colour. These will hopefully give players a whole lot more choice in the type of hotels they can create and we look forward to seeing what people come up with!
Progression System
We were finding that a lack of a progression system was leading to long moments of nothing to do in your hotel. Without a goal or series of goals you would end up spending a lot of time just waiting for money to accumulate.
So we decided to implement a series of requirements to reach each Hotel Star Rating. They usually include a facility (like a restaurant) and for you to have received mostly positive guest reviews from your last 10-15 guests.

Each new Hotel Star Rating level gives new guest types and unlocks new furniture of higher qualities. New guest types have different sets of needs and you will need to adapt your hotel to suit any new guests that will arrive, for example you will need to upgrade your bedrooms with some of the new unlocked furniture. We look forward to hearing everyone's feedback on this system!
Furniture Filtering
Another highly requested feature we have implemented is the ability to filter the furniture selection menu. You can now find that specific item you have been looking for faster than ever. This system includes a way to find furniture via categories, adding tags to filter by or by searching an item.

Don't forget to join us on our discord or Twitter to see more content and chat with the devs and other fans!
v0.7.16 Update
We have just pushed a new version v0.7.16 for all our backers and fans to enjoy. As mentioned above this includes the new progression system, many bug fixes and new items. Below is a list of most of the changes and fixes that have been included.
Changes:
Update #36 Beta!

Were proud to announce that were officially going into beta! So our Kickstarter Beta backers will be able to start playing soon! Were excited about this milestone as it brings us one step closer to our grand opening, Early Access.

Weve also worked on two important improvements to the building and furniture system that we think will add a lot to how you build and furnish your hotel, which you can read about below.

But first, we would also like to announce that we will be a part of Steam Next Fest (June 16- June 22). There will be a public demo available during this time for everyone to try out a limited version of the game and we will be doing a developer live stream where we will be playing Hotel Magnate and answering questions. Join us on our Livestream at 10am PST on the 17th (7pm CEST)

We look forward to sharing and discussing the game with you!
Improvements to Building & Furniture:
We began working on two major improvements to the building and furniture systems that will help the player to design more beautiful and unique hotels.
Freeform Object Placement
Were working on a Freeform Object Placement/Manipulation system that will give the player much finer control when designing their hotel. A player will be able to control the rotation, scale, and position of an object. Your imagination is the limit!
Improved Building System
Over the last few months, we have received a lot of feedback about the building system and some of its shortcomings. Specifically the inability to connect an angled wall to a straight one without it snapping to a segment.

Here is an example of what happens with the older system:

Here is an example of how this looks in the new system:

And here is a video showing a few of the other features and fixes being added to the improved building system

This was also a problem when placing windows/doors. The window/door will snap to a segment that stops the player from placing it where they truly want to. We are making good progress on removing these issues and making the building system a much better experience overall
Beta for Kickstarter Backers!
Update #35

The time since our last update has seen another slew of bug fixes, performance upgrades, new art assets, and a few new features. Heck, we even added the basis for a bunch of new AI activities.

Dont forget to wishlist us on to get the most recent announcements about new updates, release dates, and news
Dirtiness & Maintenance
We decided it was time to get a little dirty. When a guest or staff member uses certain objects like couches, stoves, or dining tables its maintenance level decreases. So, youll need to hire a janitor to keep things clean.

Dirty appliances can decrease the quality of any food/drink produced there and it will even increase the likelihood of a critical failure like fire. Keeping your furniture and machinery well maintained will be a key factor in running your hotel empire.

Dirty or unmaintained furniture will be more likely to give a guest a negative experience when used. And in addition to that, the overall cleanliness of a room is also tracked. For example, if a guest is at a clean table but all other tables in the room are dirty it will still affect their experience. So make sure your rocking resort doesnt turn into a dirty dive too quickly!

A different type of mess has also been implemented. If guests are unable to make it to the bathroom in time, they will end up soiling themselves and leaving a big mess on the floor for some unfortunate janitor to clean up. This system will eventually be expanded to include vomit and other messes that guests will create like general rubbish.
New AI Activities
We added a bunch of new guest and staff activities. Guests can now get a massage at the spa, go gambling, go to the gym and relax on couches in the lobby or any public areas in the hotel. Staff will now give massages, attend the poker tables, and will periodically clean facilities/furniture and repair machinery.
New Art Assets
As with previous months, we have been adding new art assets into the game. These include new floor textures, kitchen assets, rugs, decorative walls & fences, paintings, casino objects, & garden beds/boxes.
Fixes
We continue to polish and squash bugs. Below is a list of the majority of these changes.

Dont forget to follow/wishlist us on steam to get the latest information about Hotel Magnate or join us on our Discord Server or follow us on twitter!
Changes:
• Introduced a new noncollisional furniture type that allows the player to place certain objects inside other objects. These include items like rugs or columns and will eventually be expanded to include more modular decorative items that the player could use to create unique shapes/decorations
    • New AI activities: Gambling, Massage, Exercise, Relaxing, Cleaning, Repairing & Soiling Self
    • Range of new furniture items and furniture item reworks
    • New floor/wall textures + removal of some older textures that dont fit art style
    • Staff hiring menu will now open and filter for the first needed staff type of the facility you opened it from
    • A series of UI fixes: Adding in more tooltips, tidying up save game/load game menu
    • Made balancing adjustments to how some needs are increased/decreased
    • When placing furniture, after rotating the object the next object you place or when you move that object, it will use the same rotation
Bug Fixes:
• Guests now pay for their rooms
    • Default room price for a bedroom category not displaying has been fixed
    • Fixed issue where an objective will complete when reception desk is placed outside of the reception facility
    • Fixed an issue where multiple & incorrect rewards would show up on the completed objectives reward popup
    • Bedroom Categorys average quality slider now updates correctly
    • Fixed an issue where guest experiences weren't showing up in the guests review
    • Fixed some issues where guests were not calculating experiences correctly, resulting in mostly negative experiences
    • Fixed some animation issues where characters were facing the wrong direction and using the incorrect animations
    • Room income is now correctly updated in the Room/Facility UI menus
    • Fixes to the main menu budget panel not displaying certain expenses
    • Fixed issues where deleting a facility or furniture item related to the current objective/alert wouldn't update the UI/popup
    • When locating a facility, the camera will now move to the same location instead of choosing a random position inside that facility each time
    • Some fixes that stop guests from accessing areas they arent supposed to have access to
    • The players cash is now serialised correctly
    • The players progress with the games objectives is now serialised correctly
    • Some fixes to the bug report form system where we suspect some reports are not being sent correctly

    [ 2021-04-16 16:22:35 CET ] [ Original post ]

    Update #34: February

Hello Fellow Magnates! This was a month of polish and bug fixing! Last month we ended up delaying our latest version (v0.6.1) so that we could fix a few bugs surrounding serialization. As a result of our testing, we identified a whole bunch of other features that needed polishing and fixing. Along with these fixes, we also began implementing a lot of the new furniture assets we have been posting in the last couple of months
Art:
While most of this last months work focused on small fixes, we were able to begin implementing the new artwork which we have been showcasing on our discord and Twitter recently. This is the culmination of our efforts to reshape the games art style and direction.
AI Improvements:
We have had a lot of small AI improvements and bug fixes but also a few big improvements as well. The first being how guest needs increase/decrease, Guests will now sleep at more realistic times (night-time) and wont go do activities (like take a shower or use the toilet) until the threshold for that need is reached. Guests and staff will now also display an emoji showing how they feel about something they just did, ate, or interacted with. This should help the player identify if there is anything that is causing their guests to be unhappy
Bug Fixes:
This last development cycle saw the largest amount of bug fixes yet. We developed a couple of different debugging tools that helped us accomplish this. Were now able to record the exact actions taken when building walls/rooms. We also added a temporary console command menu where you can enable a debug mode and get access to more backend information for guests/staff in live builds. These tools will help us better manage our workflow as we continue to improve on systems. You can check out our changelog below.

If you have any questions, feedback or just want to talk please join us on our discord! And dont forget to Wishlist us on Steam if you havent already

    Update #33

Hello fellow Magnates! We hope youve had a great start to the year! Were excited to share some of the strides weve made and some of our future plans. Weve seen progress in building a new restaurant food/menu system, analysing our building/architecture system and creating new furniture assets.
Restaurant/Menu System
One of the main focuses of this past month have been developing our restaurant and food system. You will be able to decide what exactly goes on your restaurants menu! Every item will have different attributes which means some guests will prefer some dishes over others. On top of this depending on what your cook is skilled in they will prepare some food better than others. So it will be best to match your menu up to what skills your staff have and what kind of menu would appeal to your guests, all while having it at a desirable quality and cost.
New Furniture
Were happy with the character models now, so have been doing a lot of work in creating new furniture models that match our desired art style. A lot of the current furniture are placeholders and arent really consistent with each other and what we want the game to look like. Below are a few shots of the many pieces being worked on!
Architecture system designs
This last month we have seen quite a few bug fixes (fixing saving & loading, floor bugs & wall texture scaling). We also implemented new wall & floor textures that match our new art style, and we have started a big analysis of general usability issues we have with the system. A big influence in this analysis process has come from player feedback and we have been able to identify some key issues.
SOME OF THESE MAIN PROBLEMS WE AIM TO ADDRESS ARE:
• Being able to build a straight wall without it snapping to segment points in another wall
    • Being able to place a window or door anywhere along a wall instead of it snapping to wall segments
    • Stopping windows from moving the location of walls or snapping incorrectly.

We plan on fixing these issues in the next month as long as we don't run into any unforeseen issues.

    Update #32 Connecting Loose Ends

Weve been putting up drywall and spackling holes in our systems during our AI renovation. We rolled up our sleeves and focused on our core gameplay loop (spawning, guest reviews, marketing campaigns, hotel ratings), implementing our new and improved character models, getting serialisation working again, more localisation work, and the start of our audio implementation. We think youll like the changes.

Dont forget to wishlist us if you havent already. You will be notified of any updates, releases or sales in the future.
Gameplay Loop
Weve had most of the base systems for the core gameplay loop in place for a while, but as we decided to do an AI rework a few months ago, it temporarily broke a few of these systems, or at least how they interacted with each other. Now that the new AI has had most of its kinks ironed out weve begun re-implementing the various systems that werent playing nicely at first.

As a whole we gave the game a good spring cleaning, cutting out the cobwebs of systems that didnt contribute to making Hotel Magnate a fun tycoon game. Some of this work included reimplementing marketing campaigns, guests making reviews, generating proper hotel star ratings, and spawning guests correctly based on these other systems.

To help guide a new player we also implemented the first steps in our objectives system. This is where the player is given quests or objectives that will help direct the player into getting a hotel up and running with rewards along the way. On top of objectives we are also implementing an Alerts system where the player will be notified of any critical issues the hotel has like inaccessible furniture or a broken facility.
New Character Models
We know that weve talked a lot about this element in previous updates and twitter posts but it will be well worth it. Guests and staff form a big part of the game so it is worth getting it right. After a lot of designing, reworks, and testing were happy to be implementing this iteration of characters into the game.

Weve introduced a wide range of clothing, accessories, and hairstyles. We cleaned up the skeleton of the models so they can be animated easier, and overall made the models appear more consistent with our art style even with tweaking their adjustable blendshapes.

The base guest looks can be changed by adjusting their age, weight, fitness & gender. If you combine this with the number of skin tones, hair, clothing & facial features, you end up with the possibility of 1000s of different looking characters.
Serialisation (Saving & Loading)
Its been a hard task to re-implement as it involves every system in the game, it takes quite a while to dive into every aspect of the game and make sure it will be saved/loaded correctly, but it seems weve done it. Just like the gameplay loop, serialisation was heavily affected by reworking the AI system and we couldnt fix it until the new AI system was complete.

We are not only excited to get this back in the hands of our alpha players, but to also use it for ourselves. It will allow for much quicker testing of systems as we wont have to rebuild a hotel everytime we want to test something
Art Style, Audio & UI
Alongside our character and furniture modelling, one of our artists has been creating concept art to help direct our art style. This concept art has been extremely important and helpful in our process. The main focus of all our art work from now on is new furniture as we are quite happy with our character designs for now. Below is some screenshots of some of the concept work

We have also begun adding in audio, you will now be able to adjust different volume levels from the settings menu. Currently we have only implemented UI audio and will be moving to everything else shortly. The current sounds are a work in progress and many will change over time as we test and gather feedback.

Alongside adding these sounds to buttons & menus we have also begun adding more UI animations and transitions. Both the audio and animations will make using the menus a much more pleasant and enjoyable experience.

Join us on our discord server where we would love to hear any of your feedback or just to have a chat. Thanks for reading and we hope you have a great festive season!
Changelog:
• Added in some click/hover sounds to sections of the UI
    • Added in animations for sections of the UI
    • Management menu layout improvements & bug fixes
    • New character models implemented
    • Serialisation(saving & loading) re-implemented
    • Hotel Star Ratings & Guest Reviews implemented
    • Alerts/Notifications implemented
    • Objectives/Goals Implemented

    Update #31: October

Hello fellow magnates! Hope your October was as enjoyable and productive as it was for us! Weve made a lot of progress with lots of small changes and improvements. We have implemented a localisation system so we can start translating the game into other languages, made more guest model variations and added more staff models, improved some of our animation transitions and animation bugs, improved staff/guest AI activities and a lot of work fixing and adding new features to parts of our UI that were identified in our last build

Dont forget to wishlist us if you havent already. You will be notified of any updates, releases or sales in the future
Localisation & UI Improvements
We have added in a localisation system to be able to translate the game to other languages. The system is in place and we have begun translation into a few languages.

Currently, we are going to translate the game into German, French, Italian, Dutch, Spanish, Russian & Portuguese. If you would like to request another language be included, come join us on our discord server and voice your opinion, we are always very happy to hear what people have to say whether it be a language request or an idea for a feature

While we implemented the localisation system we also took the opportunity to add more tooltips to the various menus to assist in understanding the different buttons and screens. We also made some small visual adjustments with some changes in colour and a new default font which are both assisting in creating visual consistency and readability which are core to a usable user interface.

Another small change that is assisting with readability is our layout changes to lists of guests, staff & facilities. We also made it so that every second entry is a slightly different colour as you can see below. If you have any feedback, please come join us in our discord!

Following up with our changes in our in-game UI we also applied the same design ideas to our start menu. As well as the in-game UI the design will probably evolve over time.

    [previewyoutube=Pjk6DBZykSg;full][/previewyoutube]
Character Model Variations
This last month has also seen more work in creating character variations like different haircuts, clothing & staff models. This is an ongoing progress and we aim to have these models and variations implemented into our live builds within a month. Here is an early look at one of the bartender models
AI Activities & Animations
We have seen a bit of progress improving some of the AI activities like kitchen orders, this is where a guest orders a meal at a restaurant and a chef prepares and cooks the meal. As mentioned in previous update posts this is the most complex sequence of AI tasks involving many different systems and both guests and staff. The progress made was mostly solving a few edge cases like when an order is cancelled either by deleting some furniture, firing staff or deleting the facility. We also had to find a solution to having multiple staff members working on different orders using the same furniture (stoves).

Along with improving our AI activities we also improved the animation transitions and a few animation bugs. There were quite a few instances where the characters would sink into the ground for a split second in between different animations or would be playing an animation at the incorrect time. Most of these have been fixed but there are still a few more instances still present, it is an ongoing process in finding these and fixing them especially as more of these AI activities are implemented and our new character models and animations are added.
Linux Build
We are finally happy to be able to include Linux builds into our releases from now on! So if you are a linux user, we would love to get your feedback and help in finding any Linux specific bugs. We will also be looking into getting a Mac build available very soon.

Thanks so much for keeping up with development! Dont forget to drop into our Discord or follow us on twitter to get more involved!

    Update #30 September

Hello fellow magnates! Every hotel needs guests and we spent a good amount of time spicing up the system that will bring unique party loving backpackers and gambling grannies (along with their opinions) to your future resort.
Guest Moods & Tags:
We implemented the base system of guest moods which plays a huge role in determining a guests decisions, experiences and reviews. Depending on a guests mood they will be more likely to pick more or less expensive items at a restaurant, bar, or gift shop.

Guest tags are personality traits, moods or preferences that affect behaviour. Some examples of guest tags are gambler, fitness junky, party lover, gluttonous, and chillaholic which all affect a guests behaviour in different ways mostly by increasing a guests need for something. For example, the gambler tag will make a guest want to gamble more. Guest tags also provide the base definition of the guest type for example the tags backpacker, thrill-seeker, vacationer, or executive business. These all define the base needs of the guest. Each guest type then has a different set of spawn chances for the other types of tags, for example, a backpacker guest will be more likely to spawn the party lover tag and less likely to have the gambler tag.

Tags will also be associated with furniture, items, and food. For example, a table might be modern, wooden & luxurious. Some guests may have a tag like loves modern which will make them happier when they encounter an object that is modern.
Character Blendshapes:
Our new and improved characters have seen more work after identifying some issues with the animation rig and increased the level of detail on the models. The biggest improvement was adding more values to adjust the look of character models with the ability to adjust a characters gender, weight, fitness & age. All these values can be adjusted on a scale, meaning we have a very large range of combinations that are possible. Below is some examples of this in practice (These examples are without any textures, clothing or hair)
UI:
Following on from the previous month we have been implementing our improved UI. We have reduced the number of menus a player has to go through to perform actions and merged a whole bunch of menus to be more concise and reachable. These changes will make it a lot easier for players to get a hotel started and running. There is still a lot of work that needs to be done on the UI side, we want to gather more player feedback and identify more pain points people find in their gameplay going forward to continually improve the look, feel and flow.

These are still very much a work in progress but we feel they are a vast improvement on what we had before. If you have any feedback or ideas please feel free to @ us on Twitter or jump into our Discord community
Changelog v0.5

CHANGES:
Total rehaul of Guests + Staff. Resulting in better behaviour and animation
Implemented a whole new user interface with far better interactions and flow, making it easier to get a hotel started
    Added & improved ambient occlusion
Fixed some issues with deleting walls
    Fixed settings menu
KNOWN ISSUES:
There are still sections of the UI missing tooltips
Some elements of the UI are not active and wont display any information/are interactable
Unfortunately due to the new AI, saving and loading will not work on this release
Characters can spawn with some odd skin/hair colours and with the incorrect clothing/uniform

    Update #29 August

Hello fellow Magnates! Were happy to report weve made even more improvements on our new AI backend, UI implementation, and character animations.
UI Improvements
Weve continued to improve the UI, in particular the Facility, Staff & Guest menus. Previously youd have to select a room and then pick a facility or facilities that the room would contain. This was done over two different menus (one for the room, one for the facility). The new design combined these into one.

The old menu used text placeholders that helped us develop what needed to be in the system. Now we are able to focus on creating a more simple and easy to navigate experience for the player by utilizing more icons and cleaner layouts.

Below is a sneak peek at the Staff and Guest information menus that you will see when selecting a character. Bare in mind the colours are still a bit of a work in progress and will change over time.
AI Activities
Our improved AI system is steaming ahead with lots of new functionality for bringing more life to your ultimate hotel. In last months update we talked about how this new system will allow us to easily create more activities for guests and staff. Characters will now do things like go to the gym, sleep, eat, and etc.

The most complex of these activities is going to be a restaurant. A guest will go to the restaurant, be assigned a seat, then wait for a waiter to take their order. At this point a chef will receive the order in the kitchen, start to gather the required ingredients/resources, prepare the food, then cook it. This whole time the guest will be waiting and if theyre not alone will try to start conversations with other guests. Once the food is ready, it will be placed at the serving station in the kitchen, where it will sit until a waiter will take it to the guest. The guest eats the meal and then pays. This whole process is very involved and requires a lot of planning for edge cases like if the player removes any of the furniture involved or if the activity is interrupted or canceled at any point.

Some objects are now also carryable. Guests and staff will be able to pick up certain things and move them to other places, like a meal from the kitchen to the table. It will also make it possible for guests to pick up random objects like plants and art, move them somewhere else, or even steal them!
Animations
Jay has been working hard to add more animation variations including ones for different body types and genders. He has also been cleaning up the character models, making new textures and improving old animations like walking.

Again as we are in the midst of our new AI integration, there unfortunately wont be any new builds or hotfixes released with this update.

Thanks so much for keeping up with development! Dont forget to drop into our Discord or follow us on twitter to get more involved!

    Update #28 July AI Roadmap

Julys a wrap, folks! This month has seen a big leap forward with regards to the games visuals, UI/UX, and our AI backend. We have also put together a rough release roadmap for your eyes only! Things may change, as they often do, but this will give you a better idea of our goals.
Visual Upgrades:
As has become standard, you can expect some visual improvements to many aspects. The main two being the addition of ambient occlusion and an outline effect for when the player selects a character or piece of furniture.

The outline effect in particular is crucial for providing some much-needed visual feedback to the player, both for interactivity and visibility. Without proper visual and audio feedback, everything would feel pretty flat. This approach allows players to more easily see what they have selected, even behind other objects. Heres an example of the tech:

Ambient occlusion really makes shadowy regions pop in a more realistic manner by simulating how light interacts with objects in a scene that would typically not receive much lighting as a result of their proximity to other objects. It adds a ton of depth to the scene that a typical direct lighting pass wouldnt be able to produce. Weve used it before, but Unity broke it and now its back. Heres a comparison!
AI
Weve done a complete overhaul of our AI system. Our previous system was more of a placeholder while we tested and fleshed it out. During the implementation of more complex AI behaviours and after some feedback from our helpful community, we identified numerous issues that needed to be resolved. The previous system had to take far too much into account and be spread across many different systems, which lowered stability and required longer development for any new AI behaviours. The main focus of the redesign was to abstract a lot of the work we had done and make it more reusable and lightweight.

Were very happy with the progress! Its far more structured and scalable. New functionality can be added with less of a chance of accidentally breaking something. We can even take guest groups/families into account, which wasnt possible before. This means guests will be able to form groups with friends or strangers (new friends) and do activities together instead of wandering the hotel alone.
Roadmap
Below is a rough release roadmap that weve been putting together to give people a better understanding of our current plans. We know there have been some delays and we apologise to everyone who were hoping for it sooner! Our team has grown substantially and we are working better than ever.

You can find a more detailed roadmap HERE that will be updated with more information over time.

As we are in the midst of our new AI integration, so there sadly wont be any new builds or hotfixes released with this update.

Thanks so much for keeping up with development! We hope these little blogs are always informative and give you a better look into whats been happening behind the scenes. Dont forget to drop into our Discord to get more involved!

    Update #27 June

Woah, another month has flashed on by, and what a month it has been for us! We have fixed many of the issues that came up, fleshed out the gameplay loop, and made plenty of improvements to our game art/art style.
New Team Members
We are very excited to formally introduce two of our latest team members, Jay & Mareike! Both bring a wealth of knowledge, expertise, & drive that will help take this project to new heights.

Mareike is a 2D/3D Artist from Germany that has worked at a few startups and indie studios after her studies, before becoming the new Art Director and UI / UX Artist at Bastion Interactive.

Jay is a German game developer who worked as a freelancer and generalist for various indie games in the last few years, until he joined the Hotel Magnate Team to focus on character art and visual effects.
Characters
Jay has been very busy with a total overhaul of our characters. We werent quite happy with our previous models and felt they didnt really fit into our desired art style and lacked the ability to create enough variation. Jay has been able to rework our models with the new ability to easily change the gender, age, weight, & muscularity of all our models on a scale/slider using blendshapes.

This means we can easily change these values as we please, creating a huge variety of unique guests / staff. On top of this, we also have a large range of haircuts, clothing, and features like eyebrows to add some variation to these otherwise hairless, naked individuals. Its also now possible to easily change the colours of any of these items, or even add overlay textures to create striped shirts, tattoos, or logos on shirts. The icing on the cake is that it is all on the same animation rig! This allows us to easily modify the models and re-use a lot of animations without having to do any retargeting. Score!
New Art Style
Mareike has been cracking away at developing a new and more consistent art style for us to adhere to. This will flow onto influencing everything from our UI, characters, furniture, & buildings. We unfortunately wont be showing anything off until its further along in development.
Main Gameplay Loop
One of the larger advancements since our last update is the work done on improving our AI. Considering that the previous update saw the introduction of our new guest AI, theres been a load of fixes to bugs that were picked up by the community and reported to us. As an extension of this, we have put in a lot of work in implementing what we call the main gameplay loop. This is essentially the process of a guest checking in, evaluating the quality of their stay, submitting a review, ensuring the review affects your hotels overall rating, and then what kinds of guests will show up next.

There are many subsystems within this overall loop, like room/food pricing, the guest hotel experience, and the effectiveness of marketing. It all affects the loop in some way. To elaborate, the guest experience system records how much a guest enjoyed their stay. It records all of the positive and negative experiences based on a guests sensitivity to different things, then generates an end result of their overall experience.

Having a great meal: thats a plus! Being set on fire: unpleasant! This is combined with an evaluation that the guest performs on their room, which compares the price they paid to the actual quality they received. The combination of these different criteria channels into a guests overall rating of the hotel.

These systems are the culmination of a ton of work on various aspects. The core gameplay loop is a massive step towards making a great game. Once we have it nailed, we can refine it into a proper diamond. Stay tuned for more news and keep posting over on our Discord!

Update #26 May - AI update

Hello again! We hope youre all keeping well and staying as sane as any hotel manager is reasonably expected to be. Weve made some more progress that were excited to share with you!
The latest pre-alpha update which will be released later this week includes the introduction of guests and staff, which are equally concerning prospects for the smooth operation of a business.
Guest & Staff AI
Were launching our guest and staff AI right at you in this upcoming public build. Its the first step, so expect it to be a bit basic and buggy. Youll be able to hire staff, assign them to work in different facilities, set room pricing, and watch guests come in and share their opinions about your hotel (in whichever form that may be).

    https://gfycat.com/ifr/AcademicClutteredAntelope
UI
The majority of menus and management screens that werent available in our previous builds will be made available. After all, its difficult to manage a hotel without management tools. Some of them are in a bit of a raw state and lack polish. Weve hired a smart new individual to review our UI/UX and make improvements, though! This will take a bit of time, but itll be worth it in the end to make everything more fun to interact with.

You will also have the ability to filter furniture items by category to more easily find what youre looking for. This is a majorly requested feature, so were very excited to roll it out for everyone. Well be expanding it in the future, but enjoy the new functionality in the meanwhile!

Bonus pic of some new windows & doors
New Camera
A new camera controller has found its way into the game, whichll improve how you move around the map. New controls, shortcuts, and smoother movement/transitions will make it feel just right. The added goodies also include post-processing and lighting tweaks.
Whats Next?
Our next move is to improve and expand on the AI behaviour system, add in more furniture variants, improve/add character animations, enhance the menus, simplify some of the processes like hiring staff, hammer in more music/audio, and increase stability (bug fixes).
Pre-Alpha Build:
Our latest pre-alpha build (0.4) was meant to be released at the same time as this post but unfortunately due to a couple of bugs that we want to fix the build won't be released for a couple of days. Access to our Pre-Alpha is only available to those who backed one of the tiers with the Alpha reward or who have purchased the founders edition from the crytivo website. The build will be released by Wednesday the 27th of May. The release will be announced on our Discord, Twitter and Kickstarter page and can be downloaded from the crytivo website, so stay tuned!

    Update #25 April

Welcome back! We hope youre all staying safe. Weve been doing our usual thing, which means that theres some cool stuff to discuss! Lets get right to it.
Guest AI
Guest AI has been our favourite child at home over the past month, so it received most of our attention. We are currently testing out some new tweaks and so far the results have been quite good! Its still in a pretty rough state, so it wont yet be included in our newest patch.

Why? Well, were also still in the process of wrangling some of the wild animations and models to ensure theyre properly implemented. Personally, we love that the guests can transform into spindly 2-meter-long-flesh-dagger death spiders, but it isnt exactly the theme were going for. Maybe a Halloween update? Well see.

However, we have had some great success with our randomised guest clothing system:
UI Backend & Game Systems:
Alongside AI, the last month has seen a lot of progress in our UI backend/game systems. We were a bit stuck on where to begin, considering that so many systems rely on one another to work. We decided to focus on one of the core mechanics, the rating system, and work backwards to what influenced it.

This is subject to change in the future as more testing is conducted, but there are two primary ratings that every hotel will possess. First up, the Hotel Star Rating that corresponds to the level of luxury or prestige your hotel has (like the 1-5 star treatment real-world hotels receive). The second is the Guest Review Rating, which can be thought of as a Google/Yelp review of your hotel (determined by guest reviews over the past year).

As a result, you could have a 2-star hotel but a 5-star review rating, or vice-versa (which means your 5-star hotel sucks). The Guest Review Rating is the more complex of the two and has received the most work. It is determined by your guests individual experiences of their room and the hotel as a whole.
Room Pricing & Marketing:
To price and market rooms, players will have to group bedrooms into bedroom categories. You will then be able to set the price for that entire category of bedrooms. This enables you to group all rooms of similar quality together and offer them for a certain price. You can then run marketing campaigns for each of those categories to attract different guests.

If you market low-quality rooms to higher-end guests, those guests will not enjoy their rooms and will most likely leave a negative review. A low guest rating will greatly impact how many guests come to your hotel, both organically and through marketing campaigns. So try your best to keep your guests happy!

Here is an early concept drawing for an improved furniture selection menu we are designing:
New Team Member!
Guess what! We have a new team member! Everyone on our team is super excited to welcome Mareike Reh. She is our one and only generalist artist and will be handling our UI/UX design and ensuring we maintain a consistent art style.
    Pre-Alpha Build HotFix - What's New
Weve just released our latest build for Alpha backers! Its more of a hotfix, but it addresses many of the bugs that have been reported to us in the past month. If you are interested in trying out our pre-alpha build, you can purchase the game HERE. Its available to all of our backers who pledged towards tiers with the Alpha reward and anyone who purchased the Founder Edition linked above.

    Changes:

    • First iteration of UI scaling that will allow for people to properly take advantage of higher resolutions or change the size of the UI
    • First iteration of wind effects for surrounding trees/vegetation
    • New cursor
    • Added costs to wall + floor painting (needs balancing)

    Bug Fixes:

    • Fixed bug that turned every texture black when changing quality settings
    • Fixed some furniture placement bugs
    • Fixed performance issues associated with building the first wall on the map
    • Fixed some performance issues with floor painting
    • Fixed an issue where a crash could occur while building
    • Fixed some general wall building bugs
    • Partly fixed issue where floors can get buggy and turn to grass

    Known Issues:

    • Can still cause bugged rooms by building really tight angled walls
    • Pressing Shift while painting floors will not paint the entire room and lead to weird behaviour. (Use CTRL instead)

Thats it for now! Be sure to ring the lobby bell over on our Discord server and chat to us and the community.

    Update #24 The Founding
New Build and Post Plan:
Weve been making some sneaky plans for a while that we hope enables us to release an updated build every month for our alpha/founder backers.
New textures!
Some immaculate new textures are on the way for you to use on walls and floors, with more coming over the next few months. Give us your suggestions on what you feel is missing! We also added a lovely ambient occlusion pass to our scenes and are putting some more work into post-processing. You can check out a few screengrabs of our new textures below, but we really wish we could capture all of them together in one picture without it looking like a Jackson Pollock painting.
Founder Edition
We are excited to announce that a new Founders Edition is available on the Crytivo Store for anyone that missed out on the Kickstarter. If youve been itching to support us and get your hands on some early builds, nows your chance! It gives you access to the latest pre-alpha demo build, as well as all future builds. This includes Steam keys for the early access release, as well as wallpapers, the original soundtrack, digital artbook, and your name in the credits.
Tweaking & Updates
A whole range of features have been getting some love recently, such as square wall building, room/hotel ratings, casual activities for guests to do when bored (like wandering around the hotel aimlessly, reading a book, etc), better pausing/unpausing in certain scenarios, and some updates to our UI system (specifically the guest and hotel management screens).
Character Revision
One unforeseen issue we ran into came down to our character art. Due to a couple of small issues, we have to revise some of the design and rework it to get it to our desired fidelity level. However, were confident well get it done in good time!

Thats all for now. Dont forget to jump into our Discord channel to hear all the latest news and chat with the community. Enjoy the hotel life!

Update #23: 2020, Coming In Hot

Firstly we apologise for the late posting of this blog to steam, we have had countless issues with steams image uploading system that has caused us delays.

The new year is upon us and we have so much to look forward to! After a restful December and a very busy January, its time we tell you about all of our plans.
Pre-Alpha
First things first, we are planning on releasing a New Pre-Alpha within the next week. Please note that this is not the official Alpha release but an updated version of the demo that was exclusively provided to our Kickstarter Alpha backers. If youre one of our KS Alpha backers, expect an email with the updated link soon!
Bug Reporting
Alongside this exciting new update, we are also introducing a new bug reporting system. In addition to the website, this new system will allow players to easily submit bugs in-game. Its going to be so much easier to report and squash bugs now!

    Now onto the good stuff:
T-shirts
Good news! The first sample of T-shirts are ready and the sticker designs are being finalised. We are eager to showcase our new designs and get all of the physical rewards into our backers hands very soon. This is the first sample received but we feel that it will look better on a black shirt instead. We are waiting on two other samples, one with a different logo and the other with the standard logo, both on black shirts.
Character Models
The Guest and Staff models have been completed! With a range of different clothing, hair styles and colouring for both we will be able to generate a large range of different looking characters. Now we are moving onto implementation and animation. We cant wait to show you what our updated models look like in-game with the varying outfit types and accessories.
Fire Spreading System & Fire Fighters
After changing how the building system works with diagonal/curved walls, fire is the next big system getting some attention, and we are happy to say that your hotel will soon have the ability to burn down. Wooo! Its a lot of fun watching the fire spread and destroy everything in its path. However, there is hope for your hotel. In conjunction with the fire system, we have been designing the firefighter AI that will act as your last line of defence against complete disaster. Of course, remembering to hire the right maintenance staff and installing fire safety equipment is a great way to prevent misfortune entirely.

We cant wait to show you more of our upcoming features! Its going to be an awesome year.

    Update #22 Silly Season Update

What a year it has been! Happy holidays & new year to all our fans. It has been a rollercoaster of a year, with a successful Kickstarter, a lot of development progression and a growing community! We cant thank everybody enough for all your love and support and wish everyone a great new year.

Our team has taken a little bit of time off from our busy schedule over these holidays, so there is a little less to talk about than normal. December has seen us work on a new main menu, basic game settings, a much improved saving/loading menu, further work on the guest/staff AI and work on the improved in-game UI.
Main Menu & Settings
We finally got around to doing some much needed work on our main menu. As it is one of the first things the player will see, it is important that it conveys the same aesthetic as the rest of the game. It was also a good chance to refresh our knowledge of the Unity UI system before doing the visual work on the in-game UI. Below is a little gif of our first iteration, if you have any feedback please comment or mention it in our discord server

On top of our improved main menu, we added some basic settings that allows the player to adjust camera move/rotation speed, graphics quality, resolution/fullscreen modes and audio volumes.
Improved Saving
We have now fixed nearly all of the bugs surrounding saving and loading and the system is functional, so our next public build should allow the player to save/load! We have also changed how the system works by allowing the player to name their save as is with most games.
Guest/Staff AI:
We now have basic functionality with our AI systems, guests will check in, walk around and satisfy their needs by visiting bathrooms, restaurants etc. as needed. Without our new character models and animations it's hard to showcase any progress in this area. But we will hopefully be able to show something very soon!

We will also be putting out a new update to our alpha backers very soon with nearly all these changes present!

Thanks for checking out the update! Drop your thoughts below or hop onto Discord to chat with everyone.

Until next time & have a happy new year!

    Update #21: November Progress

    Hello, Magnates!

Another day, another devblog. We have finally settled into our usual rhythm of development and are charging through with adding more features and fixing bugs.

First off, we know there are a few people that want to buy the game so they can play the Alpha. We are still planning ways for our new fans to get ahold of the game, and we will hopefully have it available soon!

    Doors, Windows & Furniture
Remember the demo well, the doors and windows weren't exactly aesthetically appealing, so we fixed them! More correctly, we are well on the way to fixing them. We have added a new door and window placement system, plus we'll be adding even more door and window models in the future with the ability to change colours and materials of different components. We are also beginning work on a system where players will be able to change the colour/material of furniture pieces to create even more variety for all of you.

We have added a way for players to paint entire walls and floors with a shortcut/hotkey instead of individually painting each segment. This comes with the new ability to snap furniture along walls instead of having to fidget around with matching the furnitures angle to the wall. Convenience!

    Bugs, Bugs, Bugs
Like all games, there are a lot of bugs that we have been dealing with. Bugs can take just as much time to squash as it does to develop new features. We have fixed many of the issues with saving & loading that people have noticed in our pre-alpha demo, as well as more fixes to wall & stair placement.

    Guest AI
We are hard at work on improving our Guest AI; making sure they can make decisions, have priorities and even ignore some of their own needs. We are also adding more interaction points so guests can interact with more and more items and furniture within your hotel. Our first iteration of the guest AI system will be somewhat simple compared to our final implementation as we want to begin proper testing of how the guest will act/behave within a hotel, along with being able to test peripheral game systems and gameplay loops.

    Staff AI
Ah, the backbone of the hotel -- or the broken bone whatever it is, we are hard at work making new AI systems so the staff can work and interact with items and guests and even complete tasks. We also want to ensure that each staff member will vary and be independent from one another to create gameplay variety.

    Table Placement
We have also started implementing vertical placement so you can place small items onto tables and other objects. For example, placing a plant pot onto a coffee table. This system will additionally be used for things like meals being placed onto tables by staff at a restaurant. Time to get creative and decorative!

Thanks for checking out the update! Drop your thoughts below or hop onto Discord to chat with everyone.

    Until next time!

    Feedback & Bug Reporting
We are looking for any feedback from the early tests of our Building Demo, which will allow us to identify and fix any bugs that may pop up, add new features you request, and unlock some previously locked features as time goes on. If you have access to the demo, please provide any feedback and suggestions you may have by submitting a form from the link below.

    http://hotel-magnate.com/support/

We ask that you check the known issues and FAQs before submitting a report to prevent the same issue being reported multiple times. Thanks!

    Fixes
Thanks to the awesome feedback already received from individuals who have tested the building demo, we have replicated and begun fixing a few problems like improving screen resolutions and scaling, resolving issues with saving and loading, and any weirdness caused by auto-painting rooms and floors. In addition to this, we are also adding in doors and windows that are far more aesthetically pleasing than the ones currently present in the demo.

    Character Models
Below is a sneak-peek at some brand new guest models that are currently being created. Guests alone will have over 400 different visual combinations planned for the Alpha as we will be able to change body shapes, clothing and colours. Get excited!

Before we go, dont forget to chat with us and the community on Discord! Well be waiting!

    Lots of love,

    Bastion

    Feature Highlight: Conferences Campaigns

We all want to attract high paying guests such as businessmen and executives and the best way to do this is to go straight to corporate.

Players can host annual corporate holidays, large conferences, weddings and more this gives the player an opportunity to attract the highest paying guests and get into their pockets. Some guests might like it so much they want to stay longer or even come back another time.

Be careful these are the highest paying guests and are hard to please, some wont even be interested if you dont have other certain facilities or even if the food is too cheap.

    Campaigns:
Hotel Magnate will include a challenging campaign mode that will have you start with a small hotel location and you will slowly expand your hotel empire across a wide range of locations.

You will start with the bare minimum and will have to grow your business from a shabby shack to a 5-star hotel or 2 stars... You will have many different options like building one massive hotel, building lots of little hotels or creating one massive hotel at a time and expanding that small investment into a multi-billion dollar franchise.

Remember each location is different, you must adapt each hotel to each location, guests and more. Failing to adapt to each location will cause your billion-dollar hotel empire to slowly crumble back to where it came.

Each decision you makes could have a long term effect on your hotel or franchise so be careful each choice could help expand the hotel to expand or make it fall to its knees.

Along with the campaign mode, you will be able to play in a free mode where you can build to your heart's content, either in a challenge mode where you will still have to balance your books or you can play unlimited where you wont be held back by monetary limits.

    We are nearly there!

We know there are more magnates out there! Please continue helping us to spread the word. Share the game with your friends or post about it on social media (Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, whatever you like!). And don't forget to hop into our Discord channel to suggest features and share your thoughts about the game. Youre all awesome!

    Update #18: May Dev Update

    Good day, hotel managers!

We bid farewell to the month of May with a host of bug fixes and plenty of polish under our belt. In short, its been a month of improvement and refactoring that has done the overall quality and stability of the game a world of good. Theres still a long way to go, but were happy with where the project is at right now. Before we get to what weve been up to, lets all welcome our new 3D modeller, Jess, who will be helping us spruce up our selection of furniture!

    Visual Improvements:
The addition of post-processing effects has smeared a noticeable layer of visual splendour upon the game. It has allowed us to tweak and improve everything from colour palettes to contrast. Shadows also received some love, making them a little sharper, but not quite yet in the quality zone were aiming for. Enough words, see for yourself in the comparison below. Watch those colours POP!

    BEFORE:

    AFTER:

    Furniture:
Someone left all of our furniture out in the garden. It presents a fine opportunity to capture an all-encompassing screenshot, though, so might as well take advantage of the situation.

    Controls
We have been giving controls and usability a fair amount of brainpower this month, with the goal of simplifying gameplay and making everything as user-friendly as possible. The aim is to make the game easily playable with only one hand. This is achievable with the majority of systems, which is great, but there are some more complex elements that may require a bit more input. Why are we doing this? Simple: to ensure the game is accessible to all kinds of players.

    Audio
We have been experimenting with sound! Youre going to get quite an earful when everything comes together.

    Kickstarter
Before you get too excited, we arent quite ready yet for the big crowdfunding push, but were well on our way. Our focus is on fixing all gameplay issues and an odd assortment of bugs before we launch the Kickstarter. We are hoping to hit the funding button within 2 months, but no promises. Its gotta be as smooth as gravy before then.

Big thanks to all of you for being a part of the community! We cant wait to show you more.

    Update #17: April

Greetings, fellow hotel managers! Another month has seen its end, bringing improvements and progress galore. We have integrated the brand new building system, created more furniture and decoration variations, and enhanced our Guest AI with a whole new layer of complexity (including more dynamic and interesting behaviour).

    AI Complexity:
Our Guest AI system is slowly coming together. One of these days, guests may actually start behaving like actual human beings. However, that does not necessarily mean theyll act like decent human beings. These are hotel guests were talking about, after all.

Anyway, the most recent update has added plenty more complexity to the systems design to ensure we achieve highly-dynamic guest behaviour. This entails that every guest will have unique characteristics and behaviour, reacting to their environment and needs in different ways. Some may not like your house wine, for example, while others may wish to bathe in it. To each their own.

    Building System Polish:
The building system has received quite a bit of spit and polish since our last update. If you can recall, we showcased the improved building system with simple lighting and colours that were a little darker than we liked. We have since corrected these issues by reintroducing the surrounding scenery and improving the texture colours for the walls, floors, and grass.

    New Furniture Art:
We have a new face around here! Our most recent hire is a great furniture artist who has already ramped up the production of furniture (they refused to make coffee, so we had to find them another job). Theyve created a range of new office and hotel lobby props thatll spruce things up.

Thats all for now! Remember to check out our Discord channel here: https://discord.gg/h3mWKNF to chat with us and the community.

    Update #16: Marching On

    Good day, aspiring hotel managers!

Were a little late on bringing you todays update, but rest assured that this is only the case because we have been working diligently towards some major milestones. We are close to finalising our development roadmap for all of the good stuff to come, so youll soon be able to follow along more closely. While the team has really gotten into the swing of work and nurtured blissful comradery, we still face challenges as a result of how few of us there are. Therefore, we want to inform you that we are on the hunt for a talented 3D character and prop artist to liven up the game and another programmer to spread the technical load and speed things up.

If you know of anyone who fits the bill, or youre quite the marvel yourself, please contact us at: admin@hotel-magnate.com

Now, time for a peek at what weve been doing!

    Character Art:
The process of designing the visuals and functionality of guests and staff in the game is something we have been working hard on over the past month. To create enough NPC variety without breaking our art budget, we need to implement a dynamic system that randomises clothing, skin colour, facial features, and body types from a collection of assets. This saves time and precious resources while still offering a pretty fantastic result. Heres an early concept drawing of a few guests and staff members thatll help guide the final model designs:

    Saving & Loading:
Voil! A big piece of the puzzle has finally been solved! Saving & loading is officially a thing, at least for the systems we have in place at the moment, like building/furniture placement. This is quite a substantial milestone, as we have had issues in the past with efficiently (and accurately) saving walls and floors.

    UI Progress:
More important UI work has been completed, such as the addition of simple tooltips to help players traverse the interface (like whether or not a button will bring about certain doom) and the initial designs for the various management screens. However, most of the work done on management screens admittedly had more to do with gameplay than visual design, but its still a great improvement over what we had before.

    Room Rating:
This one is still a bit of a work in progress, but we have, at the very least, designed a preliminary system for how a given room is perceived by guests and how it is ranked against other rooms. This will absolutely become far more elaborate as development continues, but it should suffice for now.

Essentially, a bedrooms real room value can be rated up to 5 stars. This is determined by the rooms contents, like a 1-star room will at least need a bed, a 2-star will require a bed and a TV, and so on. Additionally, a part of these requirements for improving a rooms rating will be in the form of overall $$$ spent on it. This enforces that players will need to have sponged out a little more cash in addition to the furniture requirements to ensure the room is functionally better.

Once the room is ready, players will be able to market it in any way they see fit. If its barely worth 2 stars but you want to market it as a 4-star experience, go for it. However, most guests will call you out on your exaggerated definition and pricing, which will lower your hotels global rating. This system is still very much a work in progress, so please let us know your thoughts and suggestions. We appreciate all of your comments!

If youd like to get in touch with us and join the community, ring the bell over on our Discord server at https://discord.gg/fYkJWWk. See you around!

    Update #15: Curvy February

The new year has seen quite a bit of progress made on the game as our growing team settles into a steady rhythm. Weve been slaving away on developing and improving new systems, including the dynamic AI system, revamped building system, and a far more flexible 360-degree furniture rotation tool. The biggest of these challenges has certainly been the massive changes weve made to the building system, which will now allow you to build way more intricate and detailed hotels.

    IMPROVED AI BEHAVIOUR:
A new system has been designed for managing how guests interact with the hotel and fellow patrons. We wanted to shoot for more emergent gameplay possibilities with less predictability, which is where this fresh dynamic guest AI fits in. As you know, there are many different kinds of guests with varying needs and priorities. The type of hotel you build, how you manage it, and how you price things will affect what kind of crowd you draw in.

This leads us to the guest review system weve been working on, which will give you an idea of how guests perceive your hotel and their overall experience within it. For example, if there is too much drunken behaviour or too many dirty rooms, guests may leave a negative review stating their grievances (unless theyre the drunk individuals). This bleeds into your hotels public rating, which determines what types of guests may visit in the future.

    BUILDING SYSTEM:
A huge amount of refactoring has been done on the building system -- its pretty much brand new! Firstly, the system was entirely revamped to make it far more efficient with how it handles wall and floor props. Previously, wall segments were all separate objects that could be placed in two directions. This naturally led to quite a large performance hit and an unfortunate restriction of only allowing walls to be placed at right angles. The new system takes all of these wall pieces and smooshes them together into one entity for the entire floor. Youre welcome, frame rate.

This revamp keeps on giving, as it also enables you to build diagonal and curved walls! Your customisation options just keep on growing. Heres a WIP gif of some of the functionality the new system offers. Its still in heavy testing and needs a lot of polish, so expect something even better when it reaches your hands.

    FURNITURE ROTATION:
With the addition of curved and diagonal walls, we needed to update the furniture placement tool to allow you to place things down at different angles. A few kinks still need to be worked out and some new UI elements are on the way to make it easier to see how youre angling things. Were also working on a snapping tool that will snap furniture to adjacent walls incrementally as you drag it.

There is still so much more to do, but we feel that were well on our way to getting the core systems in fighting shape. All of this will enable you to create even more unique and interesting hotels to delight or torture guests. We cant wait to see what you build!

    Update #14: New Year Update!

It has been a bit quiet over the festive season here in sunny Oz (not to mention extremely hot), and I am glad to be getting back into the thick of it! 2019 is going to be huge for Hotel Magnate. I cant wait to get a playable version into everyones hands.

Before I delve into what this year will bring, I would like to announce the exciting news that our team has grown! You will probably notice them hovering around our Discord server and Twitter page like friendly worker bees. The first new addition is Sasha, who will be taking on some game design and production responsibilities, as well as helping to manage our social media and community.

Secondly, I would like to welcome Tobbi, a very talented programmer who will certainly help the project reach new heights. Ive pretty much been entirely on my own for the majority of the projects existence, so I am excited to see where all of this goes.

    Whats next?

With our team growing stronger, we should see significantly more progress down the road. It will take us a little while to settle into an efficient workflow, but we are already upgrading our Unity versions to take advantage of the new HDRP (high-definition render pipeline), which will see dramatic improvements to the games shadows, lighting, materials, and performance.

We are in the process of fleshing out more complex systems, like staff management, the cash/money system, and the associated management UI you will be interacting with. This takes a bit of thought and effort, as this is where many of the games systems interact with one another. Another area thats getting some serious design work is a system that semi-procedurally generates guests to achieve greater variety.

We apologise that there isnt more to show just yet, but we hope to bring you some exciting new footage in the coming weeks.

Update #13: Quick Status Update (were not dead!)

It has been a lonely few months without our little chats, but its finally time for another progress update about Hotel Magnate. The past few weeks have seen further implementation of the new UI elements and development of Guest AI, alongside the addition of a few new furniture items. We have also begun recruiting a couple more willing victims to join our small crew to speed things up. In fact, we have a big announcement to make in the near future, so keep an ear out for excited screaming.

    More Furniture:

Who doesnt love jacuzzis? Fortunately, theyre part of the latest round of furniture additions weve made to the game. You can expect new gym equipment, fountains, and indoor plants. This is only the beginning of the furniture and decorations you can expect to see in the full game, but it already adds a lot of diversity to how you can design your hotel and what your guests can do.

    Bug Fixing:

As always, we have been nailing out a few bugs/issues with the AI as we crack on with getting the guests to act more natural and behave as a hotel patron would. Guests now check in, sleep, perform their ablutions, eat, relax, and check out when ready. Theres still a lot of work to do in this area, but we are now beginning to see complete game loops.

    More locations:

Weve got a bunch of new locations in the works thatll each add unique challenges and introduce different positives and negatives to your guests experience. For instance, a city location will be buzzing with more business-minded individuals, while a tropical island will attract more holidaymakers and the occasional dictator (wait, scratch that last one -- wrong game).

    Update#12: Making the Hottest Destination

It’s time for another update, and it’s going to be hot! The last few weeks saw the implementation of the stair placement system, floor painting, an experimental fire system, UI changes, and further work on the Guest AI.

    Stair Placement
Stairs add a lot of verticality to the game, allowing guests to access higher floors/levels in the hotel. They can be built indoors or outdoors, and they will automatically remove any floor tiles directly above them. In the future, you will be able to purchase various types and styles that will certainly elevate your hotel’s aesthetic.

    Floor Painting
Floor painting takes a lot of inspiration from its older sibling, wall painting. It allows you to change the colour and texture of floors to your liking. There are many materials to choose from, such as marble, wood, carpets, tiles, and so on. We’re planning to add even more options for both floor and wall painting, so get your creative juices flowing.

    Fire
The first iteration of the fire system has been implemented. This is designed to be one of the many ‘disasters’ that can strike your hotel. Fires can be started naturally or triggered by faulty equipment/electrical problems. Players will have to ensure their equipment is well maintained, and it wouldn’t hurt to invest in some safety equipment to avoid fires getting out of hand. As you can imagine, there is still plenty of work for us to do in this area, but we’ll keep burning through it.

    AI work
Although we’ve mentioned AI improvements in previous updates, these last few weeks have seen some genuine progress. Some nasty bugs related to the animation system have been resolved, making it a lot easier to implement and test AI behaviours. Guests will now check in/out, sleep, drink, eat, and exercise. They’re beginning to act a little more human!

However, animation and character model quality continues to be a problem. If there are any experienced 3D modellers or animators reading this, or if you know of anyone who may be interested, please feel free to contact us.

    UI and what's next?
We’ve also been spending some time implementing new management menus. We are still waiting on a few assets, but the menus for guests and individual rooms are just about ready. You’ll notice a significant difference between the old and new UI, with better transparency and less distracting colours.

Over the next month, we will be focusing our time on properly implementing the new management menus and working on more guest tasks, like gambling. Additionally, we’re hoping to begin work on staff behaviours soon, most likely starting with the cooking staff. If things go wrong with their AI in the kitchen, at least we’ll have a great way to test the new fire system.

Thanks for giving this a read! Don’t forget to sign up to our mailing list so we can inform you of things like release dates, closed testing opportunities, and our upcoming Kickstarter campaign!

    Update #11: AI Wall Painting

The last couple of weeks have seen the initial implementation of quite a few important systems. Firstly, we have begun teaching the guests how to behave. As this is the service industry, we are naturally teaching a few of them to behave poorly. They now perform various tasks around the hotel, which, coupled with basic animations, makes them seem almost human. Secondly, we have added in a wall painting tool. This actually required changing much of how the current building system works. However, it greatly improves the aesthetic and customisation aspects of the game, so it’s well worth the effort.

Dont forget to check out our website and signup here if you would like to know more about closed beta, release dates, development progress etc.

    AI Tasks:

After the room designation and chair placement system upgrades mentioned in our previous blog, the AI tasks became a lot easier to implement. We have kicked this off by implementing common tasks like taking trips to the restroom, showering, and sleeping. The focus will now be on crossing off other important tasks on the AI list.

    Wall Painting:

While the new wall painting system took only 3 days of work to implement, it almost required us to rebuild the entire building system. Instead, it was decided that an older iteration of the system was more suitable for wall painting and saving changes, even though it lacked optimisation. However, our tests are showing that it isn’t performing any slower, so it was a sacrifice we are glad to have made. The new approach involves placing prefab wall segments containing a mesh for each side of the wall. When wall painting, the system automatically detects the surface a player is clicking on and switches out the desired material. Don’t worry, we’ll be writing up a longer post on the building system in the future. It’ll be quite the page-turner.

We’ll be focusing on adding in more AI functionality and surrounding game systems over the next couple of weeks. If you have any questions or feedback, please feel free to contact us here or through any of our profiles on social media. Thanks for reading! We hope to see you again soon.
