The next game from the developer of Hacknet is out now!

In search of developing more tactile, mechanical games in the future, I decided to work on something totally driven by satisfying interactions, effects and feel, without relying on narrative for my next project. It's a collection of multiplayer sports games that are all fast and fun!

I've just added the first new update sport, which is my favorite of the pack. It's got online play with rollback netcode, crossplay, AI's for every sport, and can have up to 8 players. It's out now on Steam and Switch.

I hope you like it!

Check it out here:

Hackerjam v2 Results

In the years since the original Hackerjam took place, when Extensions were first released, the community has gotten better and better at exploring the mechanics of Hacknet, and telling stories with it's tools. After all this time, the quality of work that's come out of Hackerjam v2 is amazing. Since I've been busy with my new game (Wrestledunk Sports), I got some help from Hacknet community moderator Spiderbenb with judging.

Lets get straight to the results:

1st Place - Hacknet: Flagged
By Matrix, Tukib, Snacks, Hertz, and A Casual Guy
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2122137415

Matt: Flagged leans hard into Hacknet's strengths, and really shines as an example of design, writing and style that all hit a really high level of quality. It doesn't stop at just being good though - it's clever use of mechanics and scripts is surprising and deeply satisfying. If you've been wanting a new DLC for Hacknet - this is basically it. You should play it.

Spider: The level of detail that was put into the mechanics was fascinating. It has it's own set of rules and will even punish you if you break those rules. Even though Flagged leaves you on a cliffhanger, I found myself asking when more will be added to it. It was very satisfying to play through, and very quick to pick up on.

2nd Place - Murder Room
By Kwiper
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2123621115

Matt: Kwiper comes out swinging again! This is a wildly creative extension, and invents completely new mechanics with the very limited scripting that Hacknet has available. It's so fresh and interesting, while still having great fundamentals. So impressive!

Spider: This extension does not hold your hand in what you need to do, but the detail that's in this extension alone is impressive. You have to solve murders by uploading clues to a server, and everything get's updated to include those clues. It's a fantastic extension with new mechanics to play around with and I hope more will come to it soon.

3rd Place - HeartBeat
By Samper and Soussou
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2121781568

Matt: More than any other extension on this list, HeartBeat made me feel the way that I wanted players to feel when I was designing the original game. While it has some small problems with difficulty, guidance, and progression for the player, nothing beats the sensation of trying to get just a tiny bit more information out of a loop before you have to reset, scratching down notes and passwords on a piece of paper. Really creative, and well designed, I highly recommend it.

We couldn't decide on just one third place though, as these two were both so good, so:

Also 3rd Place - Dans La Mer Du Son
By Taro
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2121723167

Spider: At it's very core, it's a Visual Novel. There's not very many of these on the workshop, but this one stood out amongst them all. If you enjoy reading as much as anyone else does, this one is for you. The writing is very well put together, with minimal errors. I can't wait to see if Taro will do more with this.

Matt: Both Dans La Mer Du Son and HeartBeat will receive the full 3rd place prize each.

Honorable Mentions
Hexa By Ohana
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2087641550

Spider: HEXA was created by Ohana, and was also the first extension I played through. It's a very basic Extension but provides you with a working Jukebox that you can utilize on a few missions. As well as a Hardmode if you feel like the first playthrough wasn't punishing enough. Still a good time though.
System Rift By Aqua
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2123630193

Matt: I thought it was going to be impossible to top Shirt Review, but Aqua's got the goods in serious extensions too. This was a really excellent entry, that got a bit unlucky not to place by going up against other entries like Flagged that were hard hitters too. It's a really interesting take on AIs and digital sentience, and has great mechanics to back it up!
Who We Are By EnderFriend284
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2098856966

Spider: Who We Are was made by EnderFriend284 and tells the story of you waking up in the year 2489 and finding an unknown entity in your systems. It's a very interesting idea on A.I. and gives it a nice twist that's fun to play through.
That's the list!
Spider: To everyone else who created an extension for HackerJam 2, you've all done an amazing job and you should be proud of yourselves. Good job everyone, and thank you for joining in for Hackerjam 2!

Matt: Amazing work everyone! It's so impressive to see what everyone came up with - the extensions are so exciting and inspiring to me, and I'm so grateful for what they add to the game. Thanks so much to everyone that entered, and congratulations to the winners! You're all amazing!

Hacknet turns three; has been played by over 1.4 million people, is on sale again!

Three years ago, on August 13, 2015, a game I’d been working on for a few years was released. I mean, it was actually the August 14th for me, since I’m in Australia, but it happened all the same.

In that time, Hacknet has been played by over 1.4 million people. That number being so huge was helped a lot by the two 48 hours free giveaways we did recently, but even those bumps aside, the success and reach of the game has been so incredible. Thankyou so much to every one of you that played the game, spoke about it, recommended it, worked on extensions, hung out in the discord (https://discord.gg/7cHhVT9), and helped Hacknet become what it is today. It means the world to me.

So Hacknet’s on sale again!
https://store.steampowered.com/app/365450/Hacknet/

Also, I put together this album with all of the Hacknet and Labyrinths wallpapers in it if you’re interested:
https://imgur.com/a/79JrcPq

I’m working on a brand new game now. It’s going to be something completely different - I needed a change of pace after 6 years of Hacknet stuff. I’ll be posting updates about that on my Twitter ( www.twitter.com/Orann ) when I’m ready!

-Matt

HackerJam Winners + v5.069 Patch Notes

There were loads of really amazing entries to HackerJam - the quality and variety of the entries blew me away. I'm so impressed by the whole community, and am excited to see what's still yet to come. Without further ado, here are the winners:

First Place:
Hacker Wars by Admiral Joshua
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=937939681
Once Hacker Wars hits it's stride (after a kind of slow start), it's absolutely packed with tension, intrigue and excitement. It's such a creative and interesting use of the Extensions tools to make something that feels really new and unexpected. The extensive use of Hacker scripts, the characters, and the structure of it feels totally new -it was amazing to play through. It's a convincing look at what Hacknet Multiplayer could feel like, and also doesn't require the Labyrinths expansion to run - Amazing work!

Second Place:
World.exe by Adamantite
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=942118213
I didn't expect anything as huge, complex and well made as World.exe to be ready by the end of the Jam, but here we are. It's a huge new expansion to the game - probably as big as Labyrinths itself, and it's incredibly well made. To have executed something this big this well, so quickly is incredible. If you're looking for 'more Hacknet' - this is for you.

Third Place:
Core by Kwiper
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=941562980
With a really strong original story, Core keeps a smooth difficulty curve, and makes good use of some of the new Extensions-only features. Like World.exe, it's a huge new experience that's basically a new expansion in it's own right. There were a few other extensions in the category of huge new campaigns, but World.exe and Core really stood apart as great experiences and stories.

Honorable Mentions:
There were honestly way more amazing entries than I was expecting to get for this Jam, so I thought it'd only be right to point out some of the other great Extensions here.

Overall:
CODENAME : Downfall by TheLoneStryder and Jammy
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=942757413
This was a really close call for third place - it's an amazing re-introduction to Hacknet if you've been out of practice for a while. If you was to check out some of the extensions, but feel like you've forgotten some of your skills, play this one first!

DNET by Hydra and no_pressure_now
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=936663943
Another strong contender, DNET makes really good use of the new dynamic Actions system to give a good sense of teamwork. Great final mission sequence too!

Exceptional Writing:
Remote Desktop by Soup'um
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=941760782
This was one of my personal favorites, because it's story feels very different to Hacknet's. It uses the tools in a really interesting way, and is incredibly well written to support it. Highly recommended.

Ad Astra by Cripion101
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=941299328
Full of personality and charm, this one had some of the best design and narrative feel of the entire set. I'd love to see this taken even further!

Best UI Theme:
DedSecOS by Kaguya
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=933954338&searchtext=hackerjam
Super stylish!

Most brain-melting Mechanics:
The Hypercluster by Lion Doge
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=937030386
This absolutely pushed even my Hacknet skills to their limits. Brutal and unforgiving, this Extension is a proper test at how well you know your way around a terminal, and how you perform under pressure. On the upside, if you spent most of Hacknet thinking "everything except the terminal is useless" - this is for you!

Huge thanks to everyone that participated in the jam. The Hacknet workshop has hundreds of hours of new and exciting gameplay on it now - a lot of which I never could have expected. I've also been working on a small patch to fix a few small bugs in Extensions, and add some small new features - notes for that below:

v5.069 Patch Notes
Highlights:
FTPSprint.exe no longer requires Labyrinths to be usable in Extensions
FTPBounce.exe runs 2 seconds faster
Added -s argument to HexClock.exe to allow execution without UI theme change
Improved the PositionNear tag for computers

Hacknet Extensions v5.067 Patch

Added

  • Turkish translation!
Thankyou to Serhat Çavunt for the excellent work on this!

  • FastActionHost daemon:

An optimized Action host daemon - this daemon does nothing except host delayable actions - but it is much more efficient at doing that than other servers.
If you have lots of actions looping or in delay at once (more than 50, say) it might be worth moving them to be delay hosted on one of these instead if you encounter performance issues.

  • Custom ISP Servers are now supported, but adding a computer with the ID "ispComp"

  • HackerScirpts now support delete * commands to delete everything in a folder:

  • Added a scroll functionality to the Extensions list for people with more than a page of Extensions installed.

  • Added support for the * wildcard in the scp command to download all files in a folder.
    Usage: scp *

  • Added better error reporting, recovery and automated tests for common extension errors.

  • Added HideAllNodes Action

Un-reveals all visible nodes from the netmap

  • Added ShowNode Action

Reveals a node on the netmap

  • Added addRankSilent mission function:
    addRankSilent
Same as AddRank, but it won't send a faction update report email

  • Added needsMissionComplete check to the Instantly action condition.

  • MessageBoard threads now support wildcards like #PLAYERNAME#

Fixed

  • Fixed Custom Admin accounts not having the same full permissions as normal admin accounts.
  • Fixed non-email alert icons not correctly showing alerts for @#PLAYERNAME# and @Channel notifications.
  • Fixed descriptions in non-English languages not working correctly.
  • Fixed HackerScripts interacting with whitelists being affected by the player's whitelist status.
  • Fixed some cases where crashing during a screenbleed sequence would keep that effect.
  • Incoming Connection alert will now only display on a connect command from a Hacker Script targeting the player, instead of whenever one was launched.
  • Fixed non-standard characters not rendering in HackerScripts
  • Fixed some errors with whitelist servers managed by a remote server not correctly checking their own system status.
  • IRC and DLCHub daemons now support #PLAYERNAME# and other wildcards in IRC mesages and names.
  • Fixed Sequencer ignoring the given spin up time and always using the default.
  • Fixed the reboot command in Hackerscripts targeting the plaeyr instead of the intended target in some cases
  • Fixed a crash that could occur when a HackerScript tried to delete a file that wasn't there

Hacknet - Labyrinths : Available Now!

Hi all,

Hacknet : Labyrinths Release Date Trailer

Hi all,

I'm excited to finally announce the expansion's launch date:

Hacknet Labyrinths will launch at 8am PST on Friday March 31.

I want to thank you all for your patience and support along the way. Labyrinths has been a huge undertaking, and ended up much larger and more detailed than I originally planned. It's over half the size of the original game in most ways, and more than that in others.

You can get a glimpse in the new trailer we've just dropped and new screenshots on the Labyrinths store page:

Labyrinths Store Page

Hacknet Labyrinths Trailer

We can also announce that there will be a full new soundtrack for Labyrinths also available on March 31st. It features 8 new tracks from Rémi Gallego, OGRE Cinematrik, Tonspender and HOME. It will cost $4.99.

Pricing the DLC has been interesting, because of how drastically it's size changed over development. In the end, we've decided on $6.99 as the base price for Labyrinths, to reflect the final size of the expansion.

That being said, I did say "Around $5.00", so we're sticking to that, and launching with a 20% discount on Labyrinths and the Labyrinths Soundtrack to bring that price a bit closer to what I said.

Whilst I've been focusing on Labyrinths these last few months, this isn't it - we're also getting close to having mod support ready to go. There will be more news on that very soon.

See you on the 31st,
-Matt

Hacknet Labyrinths Development Update

Hi all,
Right about now, I had hoped to be announcing the imminent release of Hacknet Labyrinths, the major expansion for Hacknet. Instead, regrettably, I’m announcing its delay until March 2017.

As with anything where you attempt to raise the bar on what has been done previously, the development of Labyrinths has been a huge, complex job. I'm not satisfied with making 'more of the same' - I think I can do much better. Building new systems that shake up the way Hacknet works, the way it feels, and the way it plays has meant taking some risks. Labyrinths has new tools and new targets that are more powerful and complex than almost everything in the base game. Building, balancing, and smoothly fitting all of this into Hacknet systems has taken a bit longer than I'd expected - but also partially because I found ways to take it even further then I first thought I could.

On top of that there’s been additional considerations. When I released Hacknet, it was only available in English. Now I can proudly say Hacknet is available in eight different languages, including Korean, Japanese and Chinese! But while that’s opened up the game to a lot more people, unfortunately, it also means that when Hacknet Labyrinths launches, it needs to have already been translated into these languages. Something I need to allow time and testing for.

While disappointing right now, in the end, the delay of Hacknet Labyrinths is going to be a good thing. The development that has been done on it is turning out really well. New tools, new targets, new team, new soundtrack, new themes, new secrets, new dangers. I'm not holding back.

Thanks for being patient.
-Matt

TL;DR:
Hacknet Labyrinths is going to be delayed until March, 2017. Sorry! But it’s going to be great.

Announcing Hacknet - Labyrinths

Hacknet - Labyrinths

Join a small team of elite hackers pulling off a complex series of data heists in Hacknet Labyrinths, a major expansion for Hacknet.
Adding a new 3-4 hour chapter to the game, Hacknet Labyrinths sees you recruited by the mysterious Kaguya to join a small team of elite hackers on the hunt for powerful new tools and programs.

But working with the best isn’t going to be easy. And as the series of heists increases in complexity and danger, you’re going to need to use everything at your team’s disposal to get in, get the job done, and get out.

Featuring new tools--such as the Memory Analyzer, capable of performing memory forensics on RAM--new programs, new networks to explore, new UI themes, new secrets to uncover in the original game, and a full new soundtrack, Labyrinths delivers more of the gameplay you loved in Hacknet along with some surprising new twists.

Coming late this year.

Hacknet localised, 50% off to celebrate!

After a successful launch on PC, Mac and Linux, today Hacknet has released a major localisation update to release the game in German, Russian, French, Spanish and Korean. To celebrate, Hacknet is currently 50% off until June 9th on Steam.

Since the release one of the most requested features from fans was to have a localised version of the game. Hacknet has a lot of text, which meant that we had to translate thousands of files, but the end result means that more people can enjoy our terminal-based hacking game in their native language.

From June 7th - 9th fans can purchase the standard, or deluxe version of the game that includes the soundtrack at a 50% discount. This is the largest discount we have offered on the game so far, and we think this update more than warrants it.

We are also working on the DLC which will offer 3-5 hours of new single-player content, including brand new programs to hack with, new computers and servers to explore, and some interesting contracts to complete. The DLC will launch alongside a brand new free update that will introduce mod support for the game. Currently the mod tools have been built, and are now in the hands of avid Hacknet community content creators.

Stay tuned for more information as we get closer to the release of the DLC later this year.

To celebrate this awesome new milestone,a bunch of the Surprise Attack Games catalogue is also on sale! Check out all the bargains, including Super Mutant Alien Assault, OTTTD and more by .

Hacknet State of Play 2016

Hacknet's been the last three years of my life, my creativity, and most of my time outside of a day job - and I couldn't have asked for more from the response. Thanks so much to everyone in the community for being so great, and keeping the indie dream alive!

Instead of moving on to new projects, I've decided to dedicate most of this year to supporting and expanding the game.

I've been looking at all my options on what I should be focusing on next, and what the community really wants and in this post I want to give everyone an update on what my plans are, and when you can all expect new stuff. Lets get to it!

Localization and Translations
A lot of people have been requesting localized versions of Hacknet and some eager fans have even started submitting translations. Because Hacknet is such a text-heavy game and has an unusual structure, this isn’t super easy to do but I'm currently working on the technical side and will then be organizing translations for major regions soon. If you are eager to help with translating, please let me know on matt [@] hacknet-os.com!

Multiplayer
Multiplayer is another feature that many people in the community have been clamoring for, and I'm still in the process of experimenting with various models for this. I've got some pretty crazy ideas, and this is something that I will be exploring and releasing later this year as a free update.

Education And Training Versions
An unexpected set of requests started cropping up soon after release, with a number of educational establishments, training groups and security companies asking for a training version of Hacknet. Some amazing contacts in the US Department of Defence and cyber warfare groups are helping design special improvements, and mods to the game to be used in their training programs. In parallel, I'm investigating a version of Hacknet that can be deployed to students as a learning tool, and a training tool for companies. Some of this work will hopefully filter back into the main version of the game.

Mod Support
Since day one, mod support has been the number one, most requested feature. The good news is that, yes, I am working on the backbone system that will allow modders to create Hacknet stories easily, and more importantly, a way for players to download them seamlessly via Steam Workshop. Over the next few months I will be seeding these tools to game developer friends and existing Hacknet modders for testing. This will hopefully result in some great mods being available when we release official mod-support later this year as a free update.

Expansion / DLC
Overall, the thing that the community seems to want is just more Hacknet. I definitely want to make a Hacknet 2 but after more than three years working on the game, I feel like I need to work on something different before embarking on a full sequel. As a solution, I'm thinking about creating a premium expansion for Hacknet, to give you all some significant new content but at a scale I can complete this year.

I am aiming for 3-5 hours of gameplay, with a new story, some interesting new programs, tonnes of new computers, servers, contracts, and some hidden surprises along the way. I’m planning to make this a premium piece of DLC with a price of $5 USD and launch it in the back half of the year.

Before embarking on this, however, I wanted to pose the question to you, the community - is this something you would want? If so, I'll add it to the schedule and get to work on these cool ideas I've had since the release. Otherwise, I'll stuff them into a closet and will look at implementing them in a possible sequel later down the track after I've worked on some other projects I have in mind.

How does that sound to everyone? If the community is really against charging for DLC, we'll work out a new plan, but to me, this looks like the best way to get everyone some new Hacknet as soon as possible. Please let me know your thoughts in the comments.

Timelines
Assuming that the community thinks that DLC should be developed, this is the rough timeline I’ll be aiming for:

  • April / May - Translated/Localized Hacknet launches all over the world. Prototype mod tools seeded to developers and community members for feedback

  • August/September - DLC + Mod support launch

  • October/November - Multiplayer Launch

Thanks again for all your support. I have some pretty crazy ideas for the additions this year - I hope you're ready.

-Matt

Hacknet FNA Update Discount

Hacknet FNA Update & Discount

After months of retooling Hacknet to launch on Mac and Linux, last week Matt released an update that moved the PC version of the game onto a unified branch using FNA framework. Many of you would not have noticed a difference, but having the unified version means that fixes and updates can be rolled out across all platforms, and as an added bonus, a number of the issues people were experiencing should be fixed.

Now that the framework is unified, we wanted to share a few resources for those of you still having some weird issues. First of all you can view the thread. If the answers that you seek do not appear there, head on over to the thread to find out how you can report a new issue specific to your machine.

Also, you would have noticed that Hacknet was featured in a Steam Daily Deal yesterday for a 33% discount. We're also celebrating Australia day across a number of our titles, so we're continuing the Hacknet discount for another 24 hours! We also have a number of other Surprise Attack Games on sale:

Finally, below you will find the changelog for the new FNA update for Hacknet. Until next time.

Steve - Community Manager

Hacknet FNA Update Changelog

  • Added a special recovery function to V's Bit mission chain to re-join it if it was abandoned partway through.
  • Fixed many crash on startup and save corruption issues.
  • Added an XNA branch of Hacknet on Steam! If you are unable to run the base version of the game, the XNA branch may work for you. Details here: http://steamcommunity.com/app/365450/discussions/0/451850849198782888/

Mac Linux Versions Out Now!

It's finally here! Mac and Linux fans can rejoice, the first release version of Hacknet on your platforms is now available on Steam! We would like to thank everyone for their patience while waiting for these new versions - Hacknet runs on a custom engine, and getting it to behave correctly on platforms outside of the Windows architecture was no mean feat. In fact, we called in the big guns and sourced help from Ethan "flibitijibibo” Lee, utilising his FNA framework. Hacknet is actually the very first game for release under the completed FNA library, which is very exciting!

A huge shout out to all of those who have helped us beta test the Mac and Linux version of the game. It's because of your help that we were able to squash the bugs, get the game running, and now to have it in the hands of the wider community. Without you, this would have taken a whole lot longer to make it a reality.

It's also worth noting that Windows users will benefit from these two new releases also - bending the existing engine meant that we were able to get some more performance out of it, and fix some of the niggling issues that still persist for some users. Now that we have a unified build, bug fixes and tweaks will be easy to implement across all platforms.

Finally, if you do experience some bugs on Mac and Linux specifically, please throw them into this Mac & Linux Bug Report thread so we can track them specifically. For the next week this is our focus, to make sure that any issues can be dealt with once we get more people playing on these platforms with a wider range of hardware specs.

Until next time!

Steve - Community Manager

We need your help again. IGN Australia is hosting their annual Black Beta Select Awards, awards that celebrate the greatest games of the year, and Hacknet is a contender in both the Best Original Game and Best Aussie/NZ-Made Game awards. Voting is closing very soon, and if everyone could give us a push, that would be greatly appreciated! Go and cast your vote over here.

The last "help us take over the world request", I promise. IndieDB Game of the Year voting is open for another 5 days, and we would really appreciate the support. Don't forget that if you create an IndieDB account, your vote will count as 10, which will certainly help us skyrocket up the charts. Go cast a vote over here.

In terms of development updates, the porting to Mac and Linux is going through final testing now. We have some really dedicated members of the community helping us track down the bugs, and we're hoping to release these versions to the public very, very soon. Thanks to everyone who has helped out on this - Hacknet runs on a very unique engine, and tracking down the strange issues that come with forcing it to run on entirely new platforms is no small feat, especially when there are only two of us working on the code base. On the plus side, this is also helping us eliminate some of the more obscure issues on the PC version, which means when we released a unified version, everything will be running a little smoother for all!

Thanks again for your support - we are truly blown away by the dedication to the Hacknet community, and we can't wait to keep things moving in 2016!

Mac/Linux Coming Soon

Pax Aus is over, and I wanted to give everyone an update on what's going on, and what's coming next.

Mac and Linux Ports
The ports are on their way - using the amazing FNA libraries and being ported by flibit himself! Hopefully this will not only make it available to more people (and playable on more computers for everyone that already owns it), but it should fix some crash on startup, fullscreen, and other issues too! We're hoping to have the port done, tested and out in a few weeks.

Alienware FX
Alienware were kind enough to provide some laptops to demo Hacknet on at Pax, and to make it look cooler, I hooked up every theme in Hacknet, and some events to their hardware lighting system. If you have an Alienware system, you should see some stuff like this:

Future
I've rolled out some small patches since the last update to fix some issues that affected some people, and i'm planning on continuing this as soon as we've moved over to the new FNA branch for the ports. I'm also working on a special education build of Hacknet to put in schools and universities - to teach students terminal and computer science basics. If you are, or know anyone that's interested in this, let me know: matt@hacknet-os.com.

I'm also looking into mod support, which is a priority, and multiplayer, which is still a fair way off. There's also big plans for translations of Hacknet, that'll come with some extra content in it too.

More soon.

Hacknet OST Hacknet Deluxe Edition Launched, Midweek Madness To Celebrate

Today marks a very important milestone for Hacknet. Thanks to the support from you, our community, we have managed to pass over 60,000 hackers playing the game, which is no small accomplishment. Our little hacking game created by a one man development team has managed to captivate the attention of so many people across the globe, and we couldn't be happier!

To celebrate, we have worked with The Otherworld Agency to release the Hacknet Original Soundtrack - 14 killer tracks from the game including artists such as Carpenter Brut, Cinematrik and Rémi Gallego. You can purchase it as a DLC update via

http://store.steampowered.com/app/408710/,

or via Bandcamp: https://theotherworldagency.bandcamp.com/album/hacknet-ost.

Another major event is the fact that Hacknet has been launched as Steam's Midweek Madness deal. Everyone who purchases the game will save 25%! We also launched the Hacknet Deluxe Edition which bundles the soundtrack. As part of this deal, the Soundtrack is also 25% off.

What's next? Matt has been rolling out minor hotfixes to support the major stability patch that was released a few weeks ago. We are fairly certain most of the major issues have been fixed, but if you are still experiencing issues, please post here.

PAX Australia is next week, and Hacknet will be featured in the PAX Rising section as one of the chosen games by Penny Arcade. If you are heading along to the show, make sure you come and say hi to Matt, and I'll be floating around between the Hacknet booth and the Surprise Attack Games booth.

After we are sure that the game is stable and there are no major bugs, onto the Mac and Linux ports!

Thanks again for the support. Enjoy the soundtrack, and we'll report back in a few weeks after PAX Australia is done!

Hacknet Update - Fixes Save Game, Junebug More!

Hello everyone,

Things haven't been slowing down for Hacknet. After a whirlwind trip to Tokyo for TGS, Matt is back in Australia and cracking into updates and fixes leading towards PAX Australia. Today, we are excited to launch the biggest update for Hacknet to date, one that should fix a bunch of those save game issues and roadblocks some of you were running against.

This patch should solve all issues with save game errors, corruptions, and the infamous Junebug issue. There are some other handy fixes here and there that should knock out a number of the bugs that were appearing on some systems.

Oh behalf of Team Fractcal Alligator and Surprise Attack Games, I wanted to thank all of you for being the best community around! I understand that these issues were frustrating for those who were experienceing them, but with such a small team and the need to find a fix that did not effect the save games of those not encountering the bug, we needed to make sure that this fix was right before pushing it live to the general public.

Next up we've got some PAX Australia plans, and then we look forward to some future content, an OST release, and of course, Mac and Linux support.

Until next time.

Hacknet Update 3.014

  • Dramatically reworked saves system - including a system to auto-upgrade all existing saves from the current
system to the new one, and perform some error recovery on them to fix the most common save corruption issues.
The new system is much, much more stable, and the upgrade process will try and recover all saves that it can,
including ones that may have been previously lost or unusable.

  • Fixed issues where deleting some specific files would cause the save to be corrupted.

  • Added support for directory changing with non-relative paths. (i.e: cd /log from anywhere will not put you in
    the log folder)

  • Fixed a problem where denying Junebug, then later moving onto the bit investigation would not be adding in
resources that the player needs for those missions to the CSEC assets server.

  • Fixed Education Network Archives saying 'Player belongs to another faction' when reading some records.

  • Fixed many issues surrounding creating and loading multiple saves.

  • Fixed issues where Hacknet would crash if the directory path you were in was too big for your resolution.

  • Fixed some flow issues with the tutorial

  • Fixed branch save games not loading correctly in some cases

  • Fixed an issue where on some systems, the X-C mission could not be completed

Bug update, heading to TGS PAX Prime wrap-up!

Hello everyone!

Today we have an update the goes into the current bugs in the game, and how you can help us squash them, a little post-PAX Prime report, and some information about Tokyo Game Show. Let's get right to it.

The Bugs

We want to thank everyone for being super understanding in regards to the bugs that have cropped up since launch. Being an extremely small team, we ran Hacknet through it's paces on as many systems as we could before launch, but when the game landed in the hands of you lovely people, some unforeseen issues cropped up. While Matt has been working tirelessly on eliminating as many of these as possible, his time has been limited due to the SimTect conference, followed by PAX Prime. Despite being away from the forums, Matt has been coding and testing around the clock, even on the plane ride to and from the US!

The big issue that we are tackling in the next 10 days in the save game issue. A number of people have lost their saves due to an error, and the reason it is taking us longer than expected to rectify the issue is that the changes we make will effect every player, and without proper testing, that could lead to everyone losing their save progress. This is something we want to avoid, so we have been trialing and testing various methods to ensure that the fix will benefit the entire community, not just those who have lost their progress to date.

In the next few days, we would like to call on those currently effected by the save game issue to help us test the solution. If you are having issues (or if you want to take a punt and just help us test this, knowing your save could be compromised), please sign up via this Google Form so we can contact you with specific instructions, and grant you access to the testing branch on Steam.

After we have tested this satisfactorally with the help from our awesome community, we will roll out the update with a Steam announcement. Matt will then continue to work his way through the list of the other bugs that have come to our attention, but as it stands, the save game issue is currently our number one priority.

Tokyo Game Show

After the 10 days of intense programming, Matt will be jumping on a plane and heading over to Tokyo Game Show - a first for him, and a first for one of our games. He will be spending one week on the ground in Tokyo, showcasing the game and meeting with various developers. You can expect some interesting photos appearing on the HacknetOS twitter account!

PAX Prime Was A Blast!

Last week we spent three days in Seattle at PAX Prime, and it was an absolute blast! It was great when some of the Hacknet fans came up to meet and chat with Matt, and we were really excited to see new fans test the game and pick up a copy to take home. To everyone who stopped by, thanks for coming and celebrating with us! We'll post up the TGS info when we get it, but otherwise our next big show will be PAX Australia.

That's about if for this update. Speak to you all soon!
