Happy 2026

This update will likely be the last demo update before the game releases into early access early 2026. The game is going to be actively developed throughout early access, and eventually release as the full 1.0 version. During this time, the game will recieve new item packs and cool new features.

This is all possible thanks to Alibi Games, who have agreed to fund the development of Oaken Tower throughout early access. This allows me to work full-time on Oaken Tower in 2026 and hopefully longer!

Art

When I first started making games, I always dreamt of working with artists. However, I didn\'t have the financial power, so I opted for payed assets. This is why you see some items in Oaken Tower in other games like Megabonk.\nAs announced on the discord, I am extremely excited to reveal that I am now working with artists for the early access release of OT. Many aspects of the game will get a visual upgrade, including the items. And I would like to take a moment to appreciate the new beautiful Steam page artwork, created by Fim (who actually also created the Steam page art for Megabonk)

To prepare for the early access release, this update brings a few new things:

As all item sets are going to consist of 9 items, 4 new items have been introduced. These are cross-pack items, as I aim to create more cross-pack synergy in general.

This brings the total items of each pack to 9, which is going to be the permanent standard.

Some of these items also introduce a new debuff: Shock.

The storm set is going to have a lot of synergy surrounding the shock debuff.\n\nThere has also been changes to the Arcane set, adding the shock debuff to its \"Rainbow Debuff\" identity.

\"Lesser Potions\" have been introduced.

These can currently be generated by the Simple Curses item. These potions (and all other potions) are going to have synergy with the upcoming Witch set.

Shock Vial: Give an item +1 shock.

Shock Potion: Give an item +3 shock.

Thunder Potion: Permanently increase shock damage by 10.

Holy items + Lifeguard has been updated to cleanse shock as well.

Balance:

Lifeguard: 20 shield --> 25 shield. | \"On Trigger: Cleanse 2 of each debuff.\"

Runic Shield (Epic): 3.2s CD --> 3.3s CD.

Arcane Items: Debuffs they apply have been shuffled around so that they also apply shock.

Fixes:

Transforming an item into brass knife with Wild Magic no longer bugs it out.

There might be some small follow-up patches to this one.

VSYNC button has been re-added to the video settings.

Free rerolls no longer progress the reroll cost-increase.

Fixes:

Input lag should now be fixed.

You can no longer right-click cooldown potions to reduce the cooldown of Icicle.

Fixed a bug with FPS and game speed-up. You can now choose freely between 60,90,120 regardless of monitor HZ.

Items now show their correct cooldown when the fight is over, even though you used 2x speed.

Fixed an issue where the game could crash in extreme lag conditions when hovering a button.

Fixed a bug where 3-Star bulwark would not trigger, if it was being triggered non-stop by cursed necklace.

Fixed a bug with Astral Hammer or Snowflakes in 2x speed, giving less CD reduction than intended.

This is an issue caused by a new bug in an update to the Game Engine. They said they are working on the problem and that a fix is coming december 9th.

The yuletide event is now live! It will be live throughout december and end on January 1st.

New Yuletide theme, music and backgrounds.

There are 3 new unlockable player icons to get!

These are fan-made player icons. A big thanks to: Night, Detockz & Figma Male

New Carmen lucky reroll: Presents!

This lucky roll will be full of presents.

New QoL feature:

You can now use the scroll wheel while holding shift, to see all tiers of the item!

Now works on shop items too!

Other:

You can now right-click the concede button to queue an auto-loss.

Chinese localization ~75% implemented.

There is now a \"Total Gold\" counter during battle.

The match history item save cap is now increased to ~30 items and ~20 potions. It will always prioritize Crownforge Brew.

You can now toggle 2x Speed-Up throughout the game!

Venomstrike 2/3 star (Epic): Reduced permanent poison gain.

Moon Knife 3 star (Rare): On trigger: Permanently gain dmg equal to 4x level --> 3x level.

Amethyst Bow: Gained a 2/3-star ability: \"On Trigger: 10% chance to apply +12 bleed.\"

Miriel left option (Toss a coin to your angel): +40 gold --> +45 gold.

Fixes:

You no longer lose items in the end game screen after fighting The Oak.

Fixed typo on 3-star Cursed Tiara.

(Hopefully) Fixed a bug where every 10 ish build-code would not work. This fix forced me to reset match history, and old build codes will not work in this update.

The Sudden Death damage now correctly ticks faster in 2x speed-up.

In 2x speed-up, trigger-cap is now correctly 20 times per second rather than the usual 10.

Jade no longer buffs items in the player\'s inventory.

Woodchopping no longer counts axes in your inventory towards buff amount.

Made Steam Cloud more reliable.

Expect follow-up balance changes in the coming weeks.

Custom Mode

You can now go to settings and enable \"Custom mode\".

This will allow you to copy/paste builds throughout the game in Casual mode. With this feature enabled, you can do a live 1v1 against one of your friends. You can also copy all the build-codes every day from your entire run to have someone fight your run. Quality of Life:

You can now hold SHIFT while hovering items to see their next upgrade.

Added a new option that toggles \"Quick-use potions\". This option enables or disables the ability to right-click weapon buff potions to use them on the last item that received a potion buff. Works on essences too. This can be toggled from the ingame menu. (Utility potions can always be right-clicked to quick use).

New hotkey: S + LMB --> delete potion from inventory. //Dev comment: Can be used when you have overflow of potions that you don\'t want to use, i.e. morph vials.

Added a new settings option: Epilepsy mode. This will turn off projectiles and effects during combat to make the game epilepsy-friendly

You can now enable/disable hotkeys from the in-game menu.

Holding \"S\" while hotkeys are enabled now shows a small \"sell\" icon at the mouse.

Other:

\"Remove debuff\" reworded to \"Cleanse Debuff\".

Added new navigation buttons to the leaderboard. You can now fetch your own rank, your steam friends\' ranks or the top scores.

Sudden Death damage now starts at 2 instead of 1. //Dev Comment: Sudden death is meant to end the fight, but currently it takes very long to ramp up any significant damage. This change effectively removes 1 second of overtime.

Changed the Settings menu to have 2 different tabs.

The small \"concede\" button in the top left now only requires 1 click.

Sage encounter options has been renamed to be more fitting.

Fixes:

Fixed a bug where 3-Star Nightfall would get less damage than intended.

Fixed a bug where the game music would play twice if you conceded and skipped combat phase very very fast.

Cursed Garnet no longer makes Nightquills and Sharpsteels.

2/3-Star Venomstrike no longer gains damage during combat while in inventory.

Projectiles now fly on top of items in fights (instead of behind them..).

Fixed an issue where the potion \"clink\" sound effect was unaffected by SFX volume.

Fixed a bug where items would keep firing queued multicasts after the match was over.

Fixed an issue where sound/music volume would not match the sliders until you went into the settings menu.

Fixed a bug where items that generated new items would continue to generate in \"the oak\" screen.

Fixed: 2/3 Star Fire Mace had the wrong indicator when triggering.

Fixed a bug where Mr. Spook would not appear if you had disabled the spooktober overlay.

Fixed a bug where the concede button in the top left would bug out if the FPS was very low.

Fixed a bug where High Blade would indicate a wrong number of moon items.

Sapphire Amulet now buffs the critical health gain from Life Essence too.

3-Star Regular Bow (Common): Start of combat 20 dmg / 2 multi --> 25 dmg / 3 multi.

Venomstrike (Epic): 4s CD --> 3.8s CD.

Toxins (Epic) 1.3s CD --> 1.4s CD.

Brew Today (From Mr. Spook): 8.5s CD --> 8s CD.

Wish (Celesita): Upgrade an item from ** to *** in 3 days ---> 2 days.

Exaltation (Bishop): Gain +9 free rerolls and +5000 Max Health --> +5200 Max Health.

Adding a bit more early game scaling items:

Darksteel Rework: Sharpsteel | Common | Dagger | 30 gold | 3.2s CD | 20 dmg | 25 crit | \"When this crits, permanently gain +1 damage.\"

Petal Staff rework: Common | Magic, Elven | 25 gold | 4.1s CD | 2 Poison | \"On First 2 Triggers: Permanently gain +1 poison.\"

Jade removed from the game. //Dev comment: Jade didn\'t serve a purpose, and the Elven category had too many items in it.

To make the amount of items in each category closer to each other, and keep it at a max of 9, Nightquill is no longer dark and High Blade is now only moon.

This is essentially preparation for the \"deckbuilding\" mechanic in the future, where you will be able to choose 8 types to play with when more new types are introduced. With this, all types need to have roughly the same amount of items.

Frosty has the fewest items, so to keep Frosty in line with this, a new item is introduced:

Sapphire Amulet.

Legendary | Artifact, Frosty | 45 Gold | \"Increases your critical strike damage from x2 to x3\".

Quality of Life

You can now right-click shop items to buy them, and instantly put them into your tower.

You can now right-click all potions to use them. If you do so on weapon-buff potions, it will be applied to the last item that you used a potion on. This shortcut does not work on Ink, Potion of Appearance, Crownforge Brew and Morph Vial so you won\'t use them accidentally.

Fixes:

Fixed an issue that caused lag in the main menu after about 30 seconds.

Fixed a bug where 3-Star Brew Today would produce shop potions rather than just normal potions.

Fixed a bug where candies would show a different wrong amount in the shop.

Fixed a bug where the candy buff would carry over between Oak fights, allowing you to stack them infinitely.

If you enter combat while an item is still spawning other items (Anvil etc.), it will now stop spawning.

Fixed a bug where you couldn\'t triple an item if you got the 3rd one from Wild Magic or Morph Potion.

Fixed a bug where upgrading Moon Knife through the enchanter encounter would not give the correct amount of XP.

Fixed a crash caused by Morph Potion and Morph Vial if you had also picked the Trick or Treat encounter option.

To further avoid game crashes, the maximum amount of items than an item can generate in 1 combat is now capped at 10.000.

The Bishop is similar to the Priest and Cleric. He will always appear day 11 and will boost your Max HP and either give you free rerolls, or some lucky rolls.

Woodchopping (Epic): Ability --> \"On Trigger: Give your axes +3 damage permanently per unique axe.\" | 45 gold --> 40 gold. | 4.5s CD --> 4.2s CD

Icy Axe 2-Star (Common): Ability --> \"On First Trigger: Trigger this an extra time.\"

Arcane Orb (Epic): 6.1s CD --> 5s CD.

New Carmen lucky reroll: Candy Shop.

You can now right-click utility potions (those that give XP, Gold, Max HP etc.) to instantly use them.

You can now press the space button to Fight the Oak and \"Continue\" after oak fight.

Increased the \"soft cap\" of HP to 20.000

The Soft Cap has been slightly weakened. (Gives 2K hp at 20K scaling down to 1200)

Fixes:

Fixed an issue where the music volume would change to wrong values sometimes.

Gold and Income are now reset after fighting The Oak.

Fixed a bug where 2/3-Star Modern Archery would still show an arrow indicator.

Amethyst Bow (Common) 3-Star now correctly gains temporary bleed rather than permanent.

2-Star redemption now only triggers when another item heals.

Fixed typo in the Dusk Shield text.

Fixed lag when having multiple Garnets generating items.

Carmens lucky shop \"Chronomancer\'s Shop\" now has a new potion \"Ink\" that sets an item\'s cooldown to 100 seconds. This is essentially a nerf to the Chronomancer\'s shop lucky roll, but also functions as a creative way to achieve record runs.

Added \\[SHIFT + T] hotkey for quick-level.

Upgrading an item to a new star now has a sound cue and animation.

The game now remembers the \"Always show Carmen in casual\" option between sessions.

Items that generate stuff during combat (gold / items) will now show how much they generate during combat.

New Feature: 2-Star item upgrades.

2 x 1-Star items will now merge into a 2-Star item.

This will combine the stats from the 2 items, and in some cases give a brand new effect!

Much balancing has been done in order to accommodate for the new 2-Star upgrades.

Priest encounter changed:

Healing touch --> Gain +80% max hp.

Blessing --> Gain +10 income. Gain +150 max HP now and for the next 2 days.

Celestia right option changed: Now upgrades a 2-Star item into 3-Star after 3 days.

The 3-Star items are powerful and unique!

After much testing, gold-generating items were found to be very strong with 2-Star upgrades being available. They have been changed to be a bit more tempo-focused (Hook has more damage and provides less gold, Brass Knife gives more gold in first few triggers, but ramps down to 0).\nBrass knife (Rare): On Trigger: Gain 2 gold --> On Trigger: Gain +5 gold and reduce this amount by 1.

Hook (Rare): --> 2.8s CD | 18 DMG | 25% crit | On Crit: Gain 2 gold.

Midas Diary (Epic): On Trigger and when a dagger triggers: Gain +2 gold --> +1 gold. | 2s CD | 35 gold cost.

Conjure Spear (Epic): On First Trigger: Generate 2 plain copies of spear to the right. | 10s CD.

Preparations on soft-matchmaking has started.

In some days, it will be activated and match you against other players of similar rank.

The 3 matchmaking buckets will be:

Bronze + Silver

Gold + Emerald + Diamond + Master

Grandmaster

Again, this has not been activated yet but is anticipated to kick in in a week or so.

Potion Market: No longer a guaranteed day 5 encounter. --> Now day 6 encounter, and "Visit the Market" now only offers 5 potions instead of 6.

Dev comment:

There was something exciting about the encounter spread of day 3, 4, 6, 8, 9. Not having too frequent encounters makes them much more special.

Other than that the day 5 guaranteed potion shop was extremely polarizing. Either people LOVED IT or they absolutely hated it. It was also very hard to balance as some items benefited astronomically by having it as a guaranteed encounter.

Experience Vial (Potion): gives +10 XP --> 12 XP (divisible by 4) | 7 gold --> 8 gold.

The "Potion shop" lucky roll from Carmen has been moved to the slightly more unlikely bucket of lucky rolls.

Other:

When there are 5 rerolls left before price increase kicks in, the reroll button will now show a small countdown to keep track.

If you gain free rerolls the reroll button will now show how many free rerolls you have left.

Fixes:

Trying to use a Phantom Brew on an Elvish Orb no longer consumes the phantom brew and does nothing.

The "Retry connection" button when losing connection has been made more sophisticated, and should work more consistently now when trying to reconnect. The retry connection button will also display a status code for debugging if there is one.

I think I have fixed the bug where some people rarely got matched against a lategame build on day 1.

Potions now work properly when the game "resets" between successive fights vs The Oak.

You will gain a goblet and 2x gold potions.

Option 2) Make an offering.

Give the king an item as a gift.

The king will give you something in return, depending on the gift you give him.

This option has 18 different outcomes. Find out what he likes.

This option is generally more profitable than option 1 - if you have an item to spare.

New:

The Potion Market encounter has moved to become the new Day 5 encounter. This encounter will always appear on day 5.

Item balance:

Elvish Orb (Epic): 12s cooldown --> 13s cooldown | Text change --> "This can't get multicast".

Tome of Blades (Rare): 2.4s cooldown --> 2.6s cooldown.

Dagger Manual has been completely reworked and is now called Tome of Blades.

  • Directional arrow indicators made brighter.
  • Now shows a gold icon instead of "$" at the reroll button.
  • Leaving or losing connection mid-game no longer removes a flat 100 rating, but rather calculates your rating gain/loss based on trophies. I.e. leaving with 5 trophies result in no rating change.
  • Time Tonic encounter now states what Time Tonic actually does.

Fixes:

  • Removed the "Dark" tag from Coldshot, which had been added by mistake.
  • Coldshot and Midas Diary no longer work from inventory during combat.
  • Cobalt Spear now correctly consumes bleed as well.
  • "Heavy Armor" and Dusk Shield now trigger Warrior Shield damage on start of combat shielding.
  • Pausing and then entering a new screen (like the combat screen) before unpausing no longer causes bugs.
  • Projectiles no longer slow down a lot when playing with 60/90 FPS.
  • The Elven tag and other added tags to items will now properly work on enemy items.

There are now 10 different encounters in the game, 5 of which will appear in a run.
You can see your encounter history beside the tower, as well as your opponents encounter history.

  • The Max HP cap has been increased to 15K.
  • You now gain +30% max health on level up rather than +25%.
  • The medic has gotten a new job as a priest.
  • Items now show a gold coin icon instead of "$". A dollar sign? Come on that was kinda troll.

As always, the PvP environment will take an hour or two to flush out old/unnerfed player builds from the pool. Early round builds will be flushed quicker.

Expect balance/changes to the new encounters.

However, since CN has a fairly long cooldown I wanted to enabled it and see how it goes.
  • Added an indicator in the shop (underneath level) to see what chest reward you will earn from triples. Hover with mouse to see what levels the reward will upgrade.

As always, the PvP environment will take an hour or two to flush out old/unnerfed player builds from the pool. Early round builds will be flushed quicker.

As my exams approach, I will not be doing more updates until early june.

Leveling up has now become more expensive/risky than previous.

New:
On day 3, a special encounter will now appear.
The plan is to add a few more encounters to the game.

General Balance changes:
Leveling up now starts at 56 XP required rather than 32 XP required, making leveling up more expensive in general throughout the game.
Winning a fight now grants 12 XP at day start, losing grans 8 XP (Rather than a static +4 XP). These two changes makes it harder to level up manually, and makes the process of leveling something that happens more automatically (a mix between Super Auto Pets and Teamfight Tactics).

Fixes:

* Cursed Necklace (Legendary) now works on Chopper (Common).
* Hunters Tome (Rare): Now has a sound effect when triggering.
* Crystal Flare (Rare): Only gave +1 to burn items even though it stated +2. This fix is essentially a pretty big buff, which is why the cooldown had to be increased by 0.5s.
* Fixed the minimum rating to 500.

Other:

* Now that many players have been playing Oaken Tower, the PvP database of builds has been increased. It now holds 30 different player builds per day.
* The game now asks if you are sure you want to *end your run* when clicking the menu button from the pause screen.

Following the demo launch, there has been a bunch of feedback, so here's a balance patch as well as some fixes!

Balance changes:

Warhorn (Legendary): $60 --> $55 | 12s cooldown --> 10s cooldown
Redemption (Legendary): 3.5s cooldown --> 4.2s cooldown

High Blade (Epic): Ability changed to: "Start of combat: Permanently recude cooldown by 0.1s per Elven or Moon item."
Elvish Orb (Epic): Elven/Artifact --> Artifact.

Fixes:

  • Triple Life Essence now correctly gives +50HP instead of 25.
  • Life Essence can no longer bring you above the maximum of 10000 HP.
  • You can no longer right-click items in fights.
  • Elvish Orb now correctly only gives multicast to Elven items (instead of any item).
  • Enemy Astral Hammer now correctly checks if enemy is level 8+ instead of the player.
