Hello all! I thought I'd pop by to give a little update on what's being worked on in the world of Kainga: Seeds of Civilization!
New Content
First things first, there are a few houses in the game that are currently not unlockable but a teaser to what's coming up. I should have hidden them but I didn't :) sorry! I'm working on quite a bit for update 1.2 which of course includes new technologies, beasts and map modifiers. The main thing I'm working on is what I'm calling "Points of Interest" which are locations that can spawn on any map similar to the Belowlands Karma Shop or the Necromancer's tower. These points of interest are things like NPC's to interact with, Thinker-less camps and new world mysteries and puzzles to be solved!
I have a bunch of ideas for potential points of interest but I'm always open to hearing yours!
Technical Changes
That's the fun stuff, but most of my time has been spent on fixes, keybinds reformatting and restructuring code to allow for things like proper UI and text scale to match standards of the Steam Deck and consoles. That's right! Kainga is getting controller support! I had a lot of fun coming up with the control scheme and I think I've come up with some clever ideas!
If you want to be one of the first to help test this (and the new content features) be sure to hop on the Discord to keep informed on how you can help! In addition to that, I'm working on some deeper features that have been highly requested like a sandbox mode, and I'm trying to come up with a good way for players to share the maps they generate!
Summer Sale!

Hello Kaingans! I'm thrilled to unveil the latest addition to your Kainga experience: a DLC support pack! Hello villagers! I've been working on some fixes for Kainga (full changelog at the bottom) and I thought I'd slip in something I've been working on and very excited about as well!
The New Necromancer's Tower
Have you ever wondered why the 8th Thinker, Serrano, doesn't show up in the other towns in the belowlands? Well that's because he normally doesn't participate in the Thinker's games, and instead focuses on necromancy and resurrecting the dead!
You may now notice the "Necromancer's Tower" map modifier and see Serrano in his tower somewhere on the map, calling the dead to him during both day and night! I plan on continuing to add new modifiers in the future, so if you have any good ideas, post them in the comments below or on Discord!
The Unusual Village Competition Winner
At the beginning of October, we hosted an "unusual village competition" and I had a lot of good submissions from a lot of people, but by far the most unusual, and the winner, was the one below:
It was definitely unusual and the creator, OriginalFireup said it took about 5 hours, and calls it THE KAINGA SIGN CITY. OriginalFireup has made some of the most impressive cities (and yes, I intentionally called them cities instead of towns) I've seen in Kainga, so I think the reward of a Kainga Collector's Edition: https://store.steampowered.com/bundle/29389/Kainga_Seeds_of_Civilization_Collectors_Edition/ I tried making my own unusual villages during a livestream while interviewing Drummond of Somepoint Sound, the musician of Kainga, as well as answering some questions from the community on Kainga's game design choices. Check it out: [previewyoutube=TGDD1eacp6I;full][/previewyoutube]

The First Major Update After Launch!
[previewyoutube=VJdIf7if96g;full][/previewyoutube] There's a lot in this update, but here are the key features:
Possible variations to every map will keep each game spicy! You might see a tropical Ice Ridge, acidic water, mysterious jars or geysers dotting the land or simply an abundance of snails! Map modifiers can affect what spawns, the weather, the resources and technologies available or the topography, sometimes dramatically changing the way you need to think about a map. There's plenty of room for new ideas here, so if you have some ideas, please share them!
Alternative Thinkers for long-term players that will make you re-think your strategies, playstyles and favorites! In addition to a swapped color palette, new Thinkers bring new starting crews, resources, passive technologies and bonuses. Each Thinker is focused around a key element of Kainga's world, which could be fire, war, relationships, ghosts or more. With each Thinker comes 3 new festivals and quests to unlock them and their memory slots. Let me know your new favorite!
Doubling the number of festivals available to Kainga players was a tall order, but it had to be done to make the Thinkers feel totally unique! Each festival has a new never-before-seen outcome and I'm excited to see the experimentation!
3 of these new festivals are new challenges! I've added one of each category, a new arena challenge that costs an exotic resource, a new landmarks challenge that asks you to make a path of archways, and a new caged Thinker challenge, except this time YOU'RE the one with the cage! Defend against the AI's attacks and protect the cage to win!
The last and in my mind, most exciting thing added to Kainga are Nomads. These hostile units will wander past any of the maps on boat, balloon or beast and may cause chaos as they clash with you or your neighbors! This addition really makes the world of Kainga feel alive! I think you'll really enjoy seeing a town on the backs of walkers on the horizon!
I also have the full changelog, if you'd like to check out all the minor differences. I hope you enjoy the update! As always, feel free to reach out on Discord to share your comments, ideas and screenshots! -Kainga Dev ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you're interested to see what else I've been up to, I've been working on a little side project called ShantyTown (more details to come soon!) You can follow the devlogs here:

Alternative sides of each Thinker can be unlocked with a new starting loadout, passive, bonus, and of course festivals. These Thinkers are intended for advanced players and can really shake things up!

Introducing nomads was something I've always wanted to do, and here it is! These nomadic tribes will wander across your map on boats, balloons, walkers or other creatures and really make the world alive!
New Festivals
With the addition of the new Thinkers, new festivals had to come too! Each festival is changed dramatically and the results are powerful and specific. Enjoy!
New Challenges
3 of the festivals added are new challenges!, there is a blastpowder-based arena, a construction challenge to build a long line of archways, and alternative rescue challenge where you are the one with the cage and have to protect it!
New Quest Lines
To introduce these new challenges, dozens of new quests have been added, allowing for the unlock of each Thinker's B-Side and their new memory slots, which will remain independent. Also included is the :flag-pl: Polish Language :flag-pl: thanks to one dedicated member of the community! If you'd like to help with translations for your language, or you'd like to make changes to the translations there, let me know! I'm specifically looking for people who speak:

What a fantastic launch and holiday season. It's great to see all the excitement and activity! I just want to reach out and say, even though we've hit 1.0 and successfully completed the original 8-step roadmap, that doesn't mean I'm done!
Your Voices are Being Heard
I really do read all feedback, and I'm trying my best to address everything starting with what's most impactful. I'm going to focus on improving balance and AI first. Making games feel more fair and improving the way units behave and respond to your commands. This includes adjusting spawn points map generations. I'll also be revamping the event storyteller AI to improve the way events are chosen. All of these changes should improve the gameplay experience!
A bright future for Kainga ahead!
What's Next?
I have more ideas on how to add additional variety to Kainga games. I'll share a few of them as examples of what to look forward to:
Map Modifiers
The addition of specific map modifiers that will change up the gameplay of different maps adding new challenges or boons and increase the possibilities for each game. Feel free to share your ideas and I may add them in!
Thinker "B-Sides"
Alternate versions of each Thinker with slightly different playstyles including different starting loadouts, passive and alternate versions of their festivals.
New Technologies
I've been working on new passives, production buildings and claim land banner upgrades. I'd also like to expand the reasons to tech into advanced resources, and create more powerful focused techs for those that choose to go down a specific tech route. I'm also looking into the possibility of adding some kind of online engagement, fingers crossed! Along with this announcement is another patch adding some great additions and cleaning up some of the problems you found and reported here on Steam or on Discord. Thanks for being such a wonderful community and look forward to new advances in Kainga! I'm looking forward to what the new year brings! -Kainga Dev
Hello all!

Now, time to celebrate!
That's right, with higher highs come lower lows, and suddenly, 3 days before launch day, my appendix burst! This is the worst timing possible, but then again, there's never a good time for a disaster.
The good news is, medically, everything went well. The bad news is I'll be in the hospital for a little while.
I considered delaying the launch but decided to go through with it as everything was already ready and I didn't want to keep you waiting any longer!
This means 2 things. Firstly, I will be a bit slow in releasing a post-launch patch if issues arise. Second, I need your help to spread the word! Please share the trailer, Steam link, your village screenshots and anything else!
Thanks for your support and remember to WRITE A REVIEW. It really helps me more than you realise, and I'll be reading them while I recover.
All the best and I'll speak to you again when I'm out of the hospital!
- Erik

I have to do a hotfix patch to fix a few critical things including the icebreaker event and getting Thinkers on to escape vehicles.

- Fixed some issues with the encyclopedia
Hello!
I'm happy to share a massive amount of gameplay changes, bugfixes and additions, including an in-game encyclopedia which a lot of people have been asking for.
Thanks for your support and patience while I improve and smooth the Kainga experience.
Take a look at just a handful of improvements below.
What's New?
Here's a look at just 15 things that have changed. For the full details on the massive amount of changes and fixes, check out the in-game changelog. Additions: - Added an encyclopedia - Added optional objectives - Added birds, fish and butterflies - Added 3 new units and over a dozen new tech synergies - Added status effects to units Major Changes: - Synergies can now be chosen like other techs - Memorized techs are no longer given at the start of a game - Split "Resources" techs into 2 groups, "Resources" and "Development" inspirations - Redid the tutorial - Improved structure placement and variety of AI towns QoL Improvements: - Changed borders from spheres to cylinders - Greatly improved boat pathing - All structures can be deconstructed and reconstructed - Beasts now have banners to show which team they're on - Units can hop off of tamed beasts There! Just a look at what's being improved. There's still work to be done, but I'm really happy with the progress. And the next content update is right around the corner. Until then! -Kainga Dev
In addition to the next update "Wildlife", I've been focusing my efforts on improving and sanding down rough edges on what's already in Kainga! Let's see what's improved:
I won't go into any new content that's being added in just yet, only changes to gameplay you can expect!
New Synergy System
I've been listening to feedback and the synergy system, or "unique" technologies as they're known in game, weren't clear and didn't allow for customization. Originally, if you had multiple techs that could synergize, it would pick one at random and grant it immediately. Many players didn't even realize the synergy had taken place, sometimes it caused problems and resource problems. Now, when a synergy is available, it will be granted similarly to other technologies, in a Thinker's ideas. This way you have the freedom to pick which synergy you'd prefer, or deny them all! With over ** synergy technologies, it was a shame to see players not realize this was a part of Kainga!
Memory System
Late game players will know, that the memory system was a bit broken. Originally, with all memories unlocked, you could start with 3 free techs in addition to the 3 starting nearby inspirations meant you were at 2 festivals almost immediately. This also made the search of technologies obsolete as it was often not even necessary to leave the campfire. Now, memories are guaranteed to appear in that tech's category once! This ensures that you still are able to get the techs that you saved in memory, but don't have to.
Beast Improvements
Many beasts now have different ways that they spawn, reproduce and can be killed. They also now have cloth banners when tamed to indicate which team they're on.
Other improvements
In addition to the above, a lot of fixes have been made including to rarer techs like the Gosanke Harborhouse, a much needed improved system to get units out of boats, the ability to deconstruct and reconstruct all structures, improved town AI structure placements, claimed areas are now cylinders instead of spheres, and many, many bugfixes. The goal here is to improve how Kainga feels to plan and make it a better experience overall. Keep your eyes open the next post on the next update! -Kainga Dev
Hello!
Just making some final fixes before starting on some larger changes. Hopefully ladders will be much more reliable now! I really think I got it this time.
Also, there was an invincible tree bug which was annoying me.
The Skyloft has been updated to make it so there's a better sense of progression for new players.
Enjoy!
-Kainga Dev
Changelog 0.6.15

With the newest update, "Clothing and Stone" now out, I wanted to look back at how far we've come!
But first!
Here's a new mini-trailer for the most recent update!
[previewyoutube=-z71XzIOx1k;full][/previewyoutube]
Its now been just over 6 months since Kaingas Early Access release in November of 2021, and Id like to take a moment to see whats been accomplished since.
Looking through the changes Im absolutely SHOCKED at how much has been added and improved over such a relatively short amount of time.
Since the Early Access release, weve hit 3 major milestones on the roadmap and with the Trade and Travel and Inventions updates earlier this year and the most recent milestone Clothing and Stone now released as well!
Let's look at the old images to jog the memory:
The Trade and Travel update brought multiple trade systems between towns and wandering traders, relationships and improved neighboring towns' AI.
The Inventions update included a bunch of new technologies like cloudcatchers, balloons and the synergy system, allowing technologies to be paired to make unique combinations.
Finally, last week Clothing and Stone brought new weather, clothing and and resources to Kainga.
These major updates also added 3 new maps The Edges, The Towers, and Ice Ridge as well as 3 new Thinkers, as well as an entirely new quest system has been added to keep track of your progress and rewards.
In total, the number of available technologies have nearly doubled from 115 to 223 techs including new houses, festivals, beast attachments, transportation methods and 40 synergy technologies.
There are now 13 different unit types, up from 5 at launch such as priests and grenadiers, greatly adding to complexity and possible interactions.
3 new beast types have been added for a total of 10 massive beasts that wander the lands and can be tamed, built on or fought.
From just 5 boat types originally, there are now 16 different transportation types, not including escape vehicles.
But what Im really impressed with is all the minor changes and those that are behind the scenes between then and now. All the fixes and QoL improvements that greatly enhance the experience of the every-day player. Clarifications, tooltips and pathfinding additions, AI and pacing improvements, sound and music implementations, and overall gameplay enhancements have made the game shockingly different from the version 6 months ago.
(This is actually the oldest footage I have of Kainga, way back from 2020!)
What Im most proud of is the community of helpful, creative and kind people that have gathered around Kainga in a way I never expected. These people have seen the magic of Kainga grow from a dream to a reality over time and I couldnt be happier to have such a wonderful community.
So Id like to thank you as weve traveled this journey together to see Kainga: Seeds of Civilization to what it is now.
A million thanks, and here's to the future!
-Erik
Hello!
Thanks for all the positive feedback on the new Clothing and Stone update!

What's new in 0.6?
Each major Kainga update in the roadmap is paired with a new playable map to introduce that update's mechanics. This update, "Clothing and Stone", is paired with the Ice Ridge map which brings with it a new snow system!
It took me a while to figure out how to make the snow deform properly, affect houses, water and your people as expected, but I'm really happy with how it turned out. There are new snowy weather events that can occur in some of the other maps, but are focused around this new map. The Ice Ridge map is a multi-layered mountain where space and movement can be restrictive but logs, usually a rare resource, are in abundance.
With the addition of snow comes a new way to deal with weather, clothing! I've drawn over 3000 new frames of animations and overlays to add visual flair to the new clothing and hat technologies, most of which upgrade the brave, but I also added new weapons to the synergized combat units. Braves run around barefoot and don't have their arms covered, which isn't suited well for the snow, so I dressed them up in a new fur outfit. I also drew another outfit, made instead from silk, that doesn't protect from the cold but grants other benefits. On top of the outfits, I drew new hats including a thinking cap, a fez with pangolin back-armor and an enchanted headband that protects the brave's mind.
Unique synergy units also got visual updates too! The shield bearer now has a copper tower shield, and the axewarrior and longbow use their correct weapons. Bee bombers wear an ancient beekeeper's mask and poofy clothing that would be useful against bees, acid bombers would have handled a lot of acid and thus have wrappings covering their burns, and firebombers wear a helmet based on the firewarriors of Populous: the Beginning. Finally, there's also a new Thinker, this time a Thinker-pair: Kala and Jeera.
This Thinker became inseparable from their beast once he fashioned a shell for this shell-less snail. Since then they've been granted the status of "Thinker" and are known as Kala and Jeera. They focus on a defensive playstyle, using the new stone resource, and have ways of uncovering the mysteries buried below the soil! I also added stone, termite nests and the fir tree for this update as well. Finally, due to popular demand, you can now build walls, which look fantastic too!
With this update comes a massive list of bugfixes, QoL improvements and visual and audio enhancements.
