The Dead and the Drunk pushed to live for OSX and Linux

Hello everyone! Last fall we decided to make the content update "Dead and the Drunk" available to OSX and Linux users despite the content not having gone through QA testing for those specific platforms. This was done by putting the content on an open beta branch called "Experimental". We're now happy to announce that no significant issues has been raised so we've decided to make this version the default for both OSX and Linux. This will bring a bunch of fixes, Chinese localization (thanks to "Vargoth.Zhao" for bringing this to out attention) and the content update with the "Dead and the Drunk" campaign. We hope that players who missed our 'experimental' branch update will now get to enjoy the updated content, and as always if you experience issues feel free to contact us either here on Steam or on our Discord server. - The Broken Lines team

    Broken Lines - Patch v1.6.1.0

On Friday 18 December Broken Lines had a small update to fix the major issues that were reported to us. The changelog is as follows:

    • Loading a mid-level save should now disable already run-level scripts correctly.
    • PPSH weapons in the Assault loadout will no longer disappear when unequipped.
    • The game will no longer receive player input when the end-level event is triggered.
Yes that is a short patch note, especially as this is the first post-launch update. It just goes to show that the Steam Playtest session was a big success and helped us to really clear up the major bugs before the main launch!

The Dead and the Drunk - HIGHSCORE CHALLENGE!

Greetings everyone! To celebrate the launch of our expansion - The Dead and the Drunk, we're firing up a special high score challenge. One of the developers (who you may have recently seen streaming the game on our update launch day) has set a benchmark for the first level in the expansion 'Unearthing'
[Primary] Your challenge is to beat his final score (1). [Secondary] Get the highest Final Score in the fastest completion time. Everyone who qualifies will be put into a high score table, and will be ranked on high-score Final Score. We know that there will be a lot of overlap in the scores, so all tie breakers will be decided based on who completed the game the quickest.

    Prizes

We do want to give you something for this event - but we do have a limited prize pool. With that said, we decided that we will grant the top scoring players a key to Broken Lines so that they can do what they will with it (for example, gift it to a friend, use it themselves, and so on - in the end it's your key, even if we know you own the game).

    Event Rules

Complete the first level of the expansion (Unearthing), then take a screenshot of the victory screen and link us to the screenshot as a comment reply to this article. Loadout is free to choose - you'll need to figure out what works best to meet the objective. Difficulty should be left on normal/balanced.

Broken Lines - The Dead and the Drunk AVAILABLE NOW!

    Greetings one and all!

The time has come, our first expansion, Broken Lines - The Dead and the Drunk is here! What's more, we have even more great news, this expansion is entirely FREE and will be delivered as an update to the main game.

    The Dead and the Drunk

A bizarre new challenge awaits the surviving squad members. The mysterious fog released by the masked enemies is causing the dead to rise once again. Faced with such a situation, the squad is now on the edge of a meltdown. Crashlanding in an unknown country, facing off against an unknown enemy, breathing in a pestilential fog were all bad enough, but now they have to face hordes of reanimated corpses. Luckily Izkor is on hand to help keep the squad together. How does he do that? With plenty of strong booze that will put hairs on your chest and then burn it off! The masked enemies are giving no quarter and will continue to hunt you. The zombies will attack the living, no matter who they are. What are you left with? A three-way stand-off against an insane living foe and the mindless dead. [previewyoutube=7qKF0swVbNs;full][/previewyoutube]

    Fun Facts about the Playtest

With the launch here, it's only logical for the playtest session to come to an end. We really enjoyed using Steam Playtest and want to thank everyone who took part as your help has been amazingly useful. Thanks to you all, we were able to identify some major issues and fix them before the full launch, something that we're sure you will all appreciate. What's more, the statistics from the playtest session beat all of our expectations.
    • In total, we approved over 260 people (more than we expected).
    • The average playtime was 2h 2m
    • A significantly large proportion of the players played for over 3 hours
    • Most surprisingly, 10% of the players played for over 5 hours
    • The longest playtime recorded was an amazing 20h.
What does this mean for you? Simple, the playtime of Broken Lines has now been significantly increased, and we hope that you will enjoy playing this new and bizarrely fun campaign!

Broken Lines - The Dead and the Drunk Game Changes [Patchnotes]

    • The game will now auto save every time a planning phase starts. In cases where this is blocked a message will show how long ago the game was last saved.
    • Mortar strike and LMG has been added to Izkor's shop.
    • Rifle rounds can now penetrate targets, allowing them to take down several enemies if they line up.
    • Shotguns now deal AOE damage, allowing them to take down several enemies if they clump up.
    • Submachineguns have had their firing rate and volley delays rebalanced, meaning that they should now have fewer 'awkward pauses' in firefights.
    • Panicking characters should now be more stationary and will not run into the open or towards enemy positions as often as before.
    • Soldiers can now be ordered to move while panicking, however, shooting and abilities are still locked.
    • Soldiers can now be ordered to go where another soldier is currently standing.
    • Enemies now have an 'active' vision range and a slightly shorter 'passive' vision range; allowing you to prepare after spotting an enemy before the enemy engages you.
    • There's now a small delay between ending an event and being able to start the execution turn. Now you can spam away that starting event all you want.
    • Target lines will now show their accuracy at the target instead of halfway between the shooter and the target. This should result in less cluttering of the accuracy percentages when fighting several enemies.
    • Projectile path predictions should no longer report false positives, ie. rockets and rifle grenades should no longer detonate on the cover right in front of a soldier, provided that a clear firing line was shown.
    • Weapon DPS stats will now include the reload time in their calculations, giving a more precise measurement of the actual DPS.
    • A flare now shows the area that it will reveal when selecting a target location.
    • Toggling the UI will now also remove all of the in-level UI elements for nicer screenshots.
    • Difficulty settings are now stored per save slot instead of being stored globally.

The "Broken Lines - The Dead and the Drunk" Playtest is OPEN!

    Good afternoon everyone,

The Broken Lines good news continues to come in. Late last week we announced our upcoming expansion, Broken Lines - The Dead and the Drunk, and as part of that announcement we told you that we were going to use Steam Playtest to let you try out the game and help us to find any lingering bugs in the game. If you need to refresh your memory, then be sure to check out the announcement here. Were now pleased to announce that we have begun to accept people in now. All you need to do is click on the Request Access button and well handle the rest!

    The BEST NEWS

You do not need to own the full version of Broken Lines to take part in the playtest. So, this is your chance to try out the game, see if its for you, all while helping us find any lingering bugs before the games launch. Do note, access to the expansion via this feature is restricted to the duration of the playtest only. The playtest session itself will run from today (7th December) and will end on the 13th of December (Sunday) at 23:59 CET.

    Reporting Bugs

So, are you taking part in our playtest session? Great, weve got a few pointers for you.
    • If you find a bug, please report it in this thread.
    • If you have any feedback or have a suggestion for us, please can you let us know here

    Bug Hunting Event

We are also going to be starting up a few events to help encourage you to find and report bugs, the idea is that the developers will give a ranking to each bug that is reported. The more edge-case/hard to discover/rare the bug (as judged by the team), the more points you get. We will keep a highscore table of the best bug hunters (based on the score) and the winners will get several copies of Broken Lines for their own private use.

Broken Lines - The Dead and the Drunk FREE Expansion Playtest!

    Gooooooood evening everyone!

Today we are delighted to announce our upcoming expansion to Broken Lines, The Dead and the Drunk and also a very special playtest session that we are going to start up very soon! Before we go into that, please watch and enjoy the expansions teaser trailer! [previewyoutube=7qKF0swVbNs;full][/previewyoutube]

    Playtest our DLC

Now that weve got to a stage where the new content is playable, we were thinking about what would be the best way to test the expansion so that we can find and eliminate any lingering bugs BEFORE we release it! We have put the game through extensive testing already, but in our experience, nothing beats the watchful eyes of actual players when it comes to finding bugs! Luckily for us, Steam has a brand new feature called Steam Playtest (check out the link for more information). A quick explanation for this is: when Steam playtest is enabled anyone can request access to the game/content with the simple click of a button. Then we (the team) will need to approve the request (there wont be any issues there) and youll have access to the beta/test version for free, and youll be able to play it! With that said, we do want to make clear that we are looking for people that would be willing to really playtest the game and then report the bugs to us, as we want to launch the expansion as smoothly as possible.

    How do I Join?

To take part, all you need to do is to click on the Request Access button on our store page and well handle the rest!

    IMPORTANT

You can already sign up for our playtest, however, access will be granted on Monday the 7th of December at the earliest. It may be slightly later as we need to wait for the final approval from Steam. Once the playtest starts fully, this announcement will be edited to make that clear.

    Playtest Events

As a nice bonus, once the playtest starts we will also start some special events for everyone to take part in and win some copies of Broken Lines. These will be focused on bug hunting, so use this weekend (5th and 6th of December) to brush up on your Broken Lines knowledge! Thank you in advance to everyone who signs up for the playtest session!

The Steam Awards Nomination Category - Best Game You Suck At for Broken Lines!

Hello there everyone, Its been a while since we last posted here, but let us assure you that were working on something big for Broken Lines! What is it you may ask? Well if you look back at our last major news post, youll see that we held a special Feedback session (albeit behind closed doors). The data that we received from the people involved was very useful and since May, weve been hard at work on a special expansion for Broken Lines. Well be lifting the lid on what were doing soon, but you may have seen a few hints if you follow us on Facebook and/or Twitter! However, that is for the future, and this is for the present, so lets have some fun with Broken Lines! As you may know, the Steam Awards is currently in the nomination phase, and like all good awards, the nominations come from the players and communities of the games on Steam. Whats great is that Steam lets us promote this nomination phase, wed like to put forward our suggestion on what you should nominate Broken Lines for - the Best Game that you Suck at! Now, dont get us wrong, we know that you wont really suck at Broken Lines, but as a strategic turn-based game with destructible cover, a panic meter that kicks to wreck even some of the more well-placed plans, and of course permadeath on the higher difficulties, pretty much everyone has had a phase where the game has been extremely unforgiving! So, do you feel that Broken Lines is the best game that you suck at? If you feel that it is, be sure to give us your nomination! Broken Lines - Feedback Session!

Hello there everyone, As you may have noticed, we like to regularly ping the community to get their thoughts on what we've made so far, and, perhaps more importantly, what they would like to see us do in the future. Now that everything has settled down we're looking to the future of Broken Lines and are talking amongst ourselves to decide what the community would like to see us do next. So far, we've had two feedback sessions, the first was after the main release, and the second was after the customization update, and in both cases what the community told us was invaluable to us, giving us both direction and confidence that what we 'thought' you wanted, was what you in fact wanted!

    To the Future!

Lately, we've been talking with our publisher, Super.com, about what type of DLC would work best for Broken Lines, and we think that we've got an idea (or two). With a basic idea in place, we're now looking for some feedback from the players.

    How it Works

At first, we thought about only contacting people directly (some of you may have received a ping from us here on Steam, or on Discord, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc) but this did restrict the potential audience a bit too much, so, we're opening this up a little bit. If you have already been contacted by us and agreed to take part, you don't need to fill out this form, this form was put together so that we could reach as many people as possible. The feedback is split into two parts. The first is where you can make your interest known to us, and the second will be the actual DLC idea feedback. Please note that we will need you to sign an NDA with us before you can take part in the second feedback session (about the actual idea). This is why we ask for the NDA.

    Important

We will ONLY use the email address that you provide to discuss matters related to the feedback session. This would be: sending you the NDA, replying to any questions that you may have, sending you the second feedback form, and if needed, contacting you for clarification regarding specific feedback that you give us. The email addresses will be deleted after the feedback session is complete.

    The Steps

    [olist]
  • We have set up an initial feedback form to see who is interested in taking part.
  • For this part, we are looking for people who have played the game for over a certain amount of time (options are in the form) as we are targeting those of you that have game knowledge.
  • There is a 'rate Broken Lines' question in the feedback form, but it plays no part in how far you get. This is simply because (if possible) we want to reach out to a diverse audience that includes people who both like and dislike the game.
  • For those that agree to take part, we will then contact you on the email address that you provide with the NDA.
  • Once the NDA is signed, we will send you the full idea and ask you to honestly tell us what you think about it. [/olist] If you have any questions, concerns, or anything really, please do let us know in the comments below, or if you would like to talk to me in private regarding this, please join our Discord server and contact Darkfall.

  • Broken Lines - 2 Month Anniversary Special

Hello everyone and welcome to a special Broken Lines news blast! Today marks our two month anniversary since the launch of Broken Lines and we thought that it would be a great opportunity to look over what has been going on since then and give a special thank you to everyone in our community.

    A Look at the Launch

The best way to describe our emotions when we launched the game would be excitement. Afterall, Broken Lines was originally announced back in 2017! Though we stayed true to our vision of the game, the game looked VERY different back then. Don't believe us? Take a look at this early screenshot of Broken Lines from back in 2017.
If you want to learn more about what the game used to look like, check out our first IndieDB article. So, when launch day finally came around on February 25th, 2020, it was the cumulation of around 3 and a half years of development and we could not wait to see the reaction to the game. Ultimately, we were overjoyed to see that the reaction that we got was fantastic and we had a great time engaging with everyone. One of the surprise highlights of the launch was the reaction to our developer livestream. Did you know that originally we only planned to do a dev stream on launch day, and then leave it at that? But after seeing your reaction to our devs while they were live, we knew that we had to do a few more! This gives us a nice moment to thank all of the content creators that covered Broken Lines, from livestreamers, to article writers, to video creators, and anyone else that we missed, thank you for covering our game. We did our best to watch/read as many as we could, and really enjoyed your reactions, commentary, and feedback.

    Post Launch

Just because the game launched, it didn't mean that we could rest. Quite the contrary actually, with all of you playing the game we had a lot of feedback to sort through, and (thankfully only a few) a few bugs to fix as well.
Two special highlights from the post-launch period were:
    • Noticing that macOS and Linux gamers really appreciated having native versions of the game to play.
    • Getting a great amount of feedback when we asked you (the community) what you wanted to us to work on in the future - the feedback poll had almost 200 replies and helped give us a direction that we knew would be appreciated.

    Major Updates and the Switch

This all nicely leads us to the here and now. Thanks to the feedback that you gave us in our first community poll, we decided that the best course of action to take would be to work on letting you customize the game - so that was exactly what we did. Though originally we did want to provide you with full steam modding support, due to some technical limitations that were not realistic (we'd have to essentially re-code the game). So we did the next best thing and open up the entire game databases. This update gave you the power to change pretty much anything, from the behavior of the enemies to the balancing/power of the weapons to simple cosmetics like re-naming the characters. What's more, with the update we also finalized and released the Chinese translations of the game. This was made specially for our Chinese players and we really hope that they are now able to fully enjoy Broken Lines.
Three days after the customization update, we hit another major milestone and finally released the Nintendo Switch version of Broken Lines! So, if you're a big fan of Broken Lines and wanted to play the game on the go (or perhaps we should say, on the WeGo), you can now do it.

    Looking to the Future

Now that we're all caught up, it's time to look to the future. Once again, we want to ask YOU (the community) for your input on what you'd like us to work on - and we're also curious to know what you think of the new customization options. So, please do consider replying to our feedback poll here: https://forms.gle/BFfYWFfR5f6WtrUz7 And of course, you're always welcome to leave a message on the Steam discussion boards, at any of our Social Media accounts, or over on our Discord Server!
So, that's it for this news blast - ultimately what we want to say is a huge THANK YOU to everyone in our community, who reviewed the game, who played the game.

Broken Lines Content Update - Customization

Good news everyone, The first major Broken Lines update is here, bringing you the ability to customize your game the way that you see fit. What's more, we've also worked on the balancing from our end, fixed a handful of bugs, and added in the Chinese (Simplified) translation of the game! To learn what we've changed, added, and fixed, please see the update patch notes this post.

    The Request

Since the launch of our game, one of the most popular requests has been for us to allow you (our players) to customize your game by letting you name the characters, change the power of the weapons, and so on. At first, we did explore adding in full modding support, however, due to technical limitations (wed have to essentially re-code the entire game) that was not possible. So we went with the next best thing - letting you edit the game databases (via the XML files) to put in custom values for, well just about anything! Special thanks goes out to our devs who were porting the game to the Nintendo Switch for finding this solution.

    Customization - What is it?

We weren't kidding when we said that you could customize just about anything. As the XML files are not hidden/obfuscated in any way, you will now be able to change the core values and names for:
    • Weapons and Items Name, Price, Type, Usage, All Stats.
    • Soldiers Name, Portrait, All Stats, Starting Traits and Hidden Traits.
    • Enemies Name, AI Type, Weapons, Extra Equipment, Abilities, All Stats
    • Abilities, Traits, and Status Effects Usage count, Type, Duration, All Stats
    • Campaign Structure Starting rooster, Starting inventory, Abilities and Resources, When the shop appears, Random events, Accessible levels.
    • Shop Content and price multiplier of different categories
    • Events Content of all events
    • Levels Name, Description, Texts, Composure loss on retry, Level Evaluation, Level Rewards, Abilities awarded on completion.
    • Texts All text in the game including UI text, item and ability description, event texts, soldier comments, and so on.

    Important Information

Customizing the game will be fun, however, there are a few things that you need to be aware of. [olist]
  • When customizing the game, you will not be able to unlock any new achievements.
  • Customization overwrites the games normal files. Therefore, we recommend that you back up all files before changing anything.
  • In case something really goes wrong, you can reset everything back to normal by using the verify your local cache option from steam.
  • Customizing the game may potentially create bugs, especially if you change too much. An example of this would be if you change specific events that take place within a level. This may result in the game getting stuck if the level progression depends on a character being present/alive.
  • Please note that though we will try to help with any potential bugs, there may be situations where we cannot help you due to bugs that arise from your specific customizations. [/olist] So, do you want to learn how to customize your game? Check out our guide here. We hope that you will enjoy this update and we cannot wait to see what sort of customizations you will add to the game! - Your Broken Lines Team!

Broken Lines on macOS and Linux

Attention Broken Lines community, It has been brought to our attention that there is quite a lot of interest in Broken Lines coming from macOS and Linux gamers; we regularly get asked if we 'plan' to support these Operating Systems. The answer may surprise you - we already do. Though it may have flown under the radar a bit! If you happen to be a Tux fan, or simply prefer the feel of macOS, we've got you covered with native ports of the game. In all, we support the following Operating Systems:

    • Windows (Windows 7 or higher)
    • Linux (any 64bit distro)
    • macOS (OSX version 10.13.6 +)
So, there you have it. We hope that you'll enjoy playing Broken Lines - no matter what OS you are on! - Your Broken Lines Team

Your chance to tell us what YOU want!

Hello everyone, Now that Broken Lines has been available to you for a while giving you all a good chance to play the game, were beginning to look to the future! As you may have noticed, we (the Broken Lines team) have been as active as possible on the discussion board, listening to your thoughts on the game and helping you out where possible - after all we just want you to have a good experience playing Broken Lines! As were now looking to the future, we decided that it would be best to give you - the community - a chance to make your thoughts heard on what we do with the game. So, wed like to invite you all to take part in our community poll.

    Explanation/How this Works:

This poll is split into 7 sections. In the first section, you are asked to rank what aspect of the game you feel we should focus on the most. The subsequent sections of the poll then takes you through multiple ideas for each aspect (listed in section one) that weve heard from the community and asks you to rank them in terms of what you would like to see. If you have an idea that isnt listed, dont worry - at the end of each section, you have the chance to write your own idea for the topic. At the end of the poll, you have a further free section where you may write any ideas that you feel does not fit into the previous sections. Finally, you will need to sign in to google to take part - however, no email addresses/personal details are stored by us. Important This poll is to give us a direction and provide us with structured feedback on what the community would like to see us add to the game. At this point, we cannot promise that the most popular idea(s) will be worked on, as we first need to judge the feasibility of the ideas.

A Message from our Game Director and Producer - Hans von Knut

    Greetings all Broken Lines players!

With the latest Patch v1.0.2 now named The Gleeful Garand the Broken Lines excitement train keeps on rolling. Please do check out the Patch Notes as we have added several new features, fixed the balancing in key areas, and of-course fixed the most troublesome bugs. If you have already checked out the Patch Notes, we've got two special messages for you!
    • First, the Game Director and Producer of Broken Lines, Hans Von Knut, has a message for you all!
    • Second, today at 15:00 CET we will once again be streaming on Steam, YouTube and Twitch! This is your chance to get a live response to any and all questions that you may have!

A Message from the Broken Lines Game Director and Producer

[quote=Hans von Knut] Hello all you Broken Lines players! We want to do our best to make the gameplay experience the best that we can for all of you so I want to explain how we work on the Patches! To make sure that we prioritise what needs to be worked on in the best way possible, we have been following all the the Steam forum discussions, the Discord Channel, our Facebook, Twitter, the various gaming site reviews and of-course the many Youtube comments about the game as closely as possible. This is simply so that we can figure out what has bothered you the most. So we are proud to have just launched the first major patch since the launch of the game - a patch that has been created for you! The patch focuses on several issues, most importantly: We have increased the number of viable builds for your squad which allows you to focus on the direction much earlier on in the campaign. This includes rebalancing the content of the shop and buffing the semi-automatic rifles along with some of the less frequently used abilities. We also heard a lot of comments about the behaviour of all soldiers (yours and the enemies) so we have made them smarter when panicking. This results in a slight nerf to the effect of suppression in general, thus making you a bit less dependent on SMGs. The way that we communicated the story and goals during the levels also led to some questions so we improved a lot of the placement, timing and prerequisites of events and win-conditions in levels. Finally we come to the bug fixes. Weve heard your cries of pain, so after looking through all of the reports (thank you to everyone that reported the bugs) we have put a huge effort into removing some of the most bothersome bugs. Floaty animations when in panic, geometry issues and visual ugliness in some levels, some soft blocks that forced levels to be reloaded are just some of the bugs that we fixed! Of-course, that is not all - we are already starting work on the next patch. So if there is anything you are missing, then please write it in the discussion. We will keep digesting all the feedback and work hard on making the game as good as possible, for all of you. Thank you for your time - and have a good weekend with Broken Lines![/quote]

    Patch 1.0.1.7

The first Broken Lines hotfix patch has been released today. This patch fixes an issue with the controllers that caused the cursor to lock in the center of the screen. We will continue to watch the discussions section and are making notes of all other bugs that are reported. If you do encounter a bug, as well as reporting what it is/what it does, please can you find a way to add your game's output log to your description. Suggestions on how to do so:

    • Simply copy and paste the content of the output_log.txt file in your reply
    • Upload it to a file hosting site (e.g. google drive) and put a link to it in your message
    • Or send it to us in a DM on Twitter or Facebook
The output log file can be found in this directory: \Users\\AppData\LocalLow\PortaPlay\Broken Lines Thank you very much, The Broken Lines Team

    Vehicles in Broken Lines

This is something that were asked about a lot, but until now weve never shown what vehicles are like in Broken Lines. Be warned, as you progress in the game you will inevitably come up against heavily armored vehicles. Always be sure to scout the map as vehicles are hard to hide - and knowing that you will have to fight one will allow you to prepare for it! So - vehicles do exist in Broken Lines, but only for the enemies, so you won't be using them. Broken Lines - Metal Music Special

    Broken Lines X Asuryan

We have a special announcement for fans of Broken Lines! The Metal band Asuryan has been following Broken Lines and decided to create an awesome fan tribute song of the game! Everyone at Broken Lines has been really touched by this gesture and we all hope that you'll enjoy this song as well! Rifles in Broken Lines

Youve seen the Shotguns and the SMGs, so now its time to look at the rifles. Rifles are the weapon of choice if you need to engage the enemy from a distance, and though they have a slow rate of fire, their damage per projectile, range, and accuracy from a distance is unmatched.

Whats more, we have 2 special rifles that come with a scope. The added scope means that these particular rifles have an even longer range and are even more accurate.

What do these weapons look like? Check out this short clip of Conner armed with one of the scoped rifles! [previewyoutube=HVZ8gCfrBS8;full][/previewyoutube]

Broken Lines - Looking at the SMG

    SMG

Its time to introduce the SMGs that you can find in Broken Lines. If you need to suppress the enemy, these are the weapons for you. In Broken Lines, SMGs are typically characterized by a high rate of fire and a large ammo capacity. Though their major drawbacks are low accuracy, a limited range, and low overall damage per bullet. The SMGs that you will have access to are:
    • The Sten Gun
    • The Thompson Submachine Gun
    • The PPSH41
    • The MP40
    • The Sturmgewehr 44

    In-Game Model

Now that you know about the various SMGs in the game, lets look at what it looks like when Fry is equipped with the ever-trusty Sten Gun! [previewyoutube=N3Ehoang-84;full][/previewyoutube]

Broken Lines - Izkor and his Wares

    Izkor - The Friendly Local

Early on in your campaign, you will rescue Izkor, a very interesting elderly local that decides to help the squad. What does he bring to the table? Well, he has special contacts that give him access to some more exotic weaponry! Perhaps thats why he was in a prison when you first met him? These weapons are far stronger than the basic rifles, shotguns, and SMGs that your squad has been equipped with, so it is wise to check what he has in store. Izkor also has some supplies to help feed the squad so you may have to make a decision. Will you buy the better weapons, or will you buy the supplies to feed the squad? [previewyoutube=sPxwCyaWSew;full][/previewyoutube]

    The Shotgun

The shotgun is a powerful, close-ranged weapon best used to clear out enemies that have limited room to manoeuvre such as if you need to clear out an occupied building! [previewyoutube=uE9eHVaDn1Q;full][/previewyoutube]

Broken Lines - Mastering the Game!

    Game Tip - Supplies

People need to eat - that is a simple fact of life. The soldiers under your care in Broken Lines are no different. Supplies are an important resource in Broken Lines as every day you spend 1 supply per solider to keep them fed and happy. If you do not have enough for the entire team (say you are missing one) an unfortunate event will happen. As a result of that, some (or sometimes all) of the squad members will lose composure. This is important to know as lower composure will influence their battle performance and may activate strange effects. If a soliders composure hits zero, they will eventually desert the squad, usually ending in their untimely death! Supplies can be found in random encounters while at camp, or found in crates during a mission. [previewyoutube=dPA-pos1kGQ;full][/previewyoutube] Be sure to remember these tips as they will help master the game!

    New Story Trailer for 2020

A new year - a new trailer, this time were focusing on the games story! [previewyoutube=xcP8_pH4VTA;full][/previewyoutube]

    Game Tip - Targeting

Last week, our game tip segment spoke about movement and how the soldiers under your command are aware of their surroundings. This week, we are expanding on this by looking at who they target if multiple enemies are in range. When multiple enemies are in range, the solider will make a decision on who to engage. The most important factors are the probability of hitting the enemy and how far the enemy is. After that, there are other factors that can come into play such as the type of weapon the enemy is using (heavy weapons will draw more attention), if the target is shooting at the solider, and how much the solider would need to turn to face their opponent. [previewyoutube=YwuouaqKO_g;full][/previewyoutube] Be sure to remember these tips as they will help master the game!

Broken Lines - Happy New Year

2020 is here, so wed like to wish everyone out there a Happy New year. 2020 will be a big year for us as well be releasing Broken Lines early this year, so we already have a lot to look forward to!

    Game Tip - Movement

In Broken Lines, the soldiers are aware of their surroundings and so will automatically respond to nearby threats. This means that when playing, you will only need to give interesting strategic commands such as where to move, and when/where to use a special ability (like throwing a grenade). With the orders submitted, you hit play and watch as the squad carries out your orders, while reacting to threats. [previewyoutube=GLdrrojMD-M;full][/previewyoutube]

Broken Lines - Looking at the Game

    Game Tip - Friendly Fire

One feature that weve added to the game that you will need to watch out for is friendly fire. If an enemy is in range, and your troops are positioned poorly, your own soldier may accidentally fire on a squadmate. [previewyoutube=GLdrrojMD-M;full][/previewyoutube] Be sure to keep this in mind when you create your strategies.

Broken Lines - Inspiration for the Game

    Inspiring the Developers

Did you know that many of the in-game models (such as the houses) are all inspired by real-world buildings? Back in 2017, the PortaPlay team traveled to Transylvania in Romania where not only did we enjoy the stunning countryside, but we took careful note of what the buildings looked like. When we got back, our designers created in-game models that were heavily based on what we saw. Check out the photo below - it is quite easy to see the similarity between the photo that we took and the in-game model.

As the development of the game gradually comes to an end, testing the game, finding bugs, and fixing the bugs has become one of our main tasks, and with this we find ourselves taking a lot of screenshots (after all we need to document our finds). Recently, we managed to take a screenshot at the perfect moment. Just before dying, this enemy soldier struck a perfect dab on the battlefield!

Broken Lines - Developing a Sketch

    Sketching and Developing Fry

An important part of creating characters in a game is getting the initial sketches to look right, after all, they will form the basis of what the in-game model should look like. Broken Lines - Game Physics and Let's Plays

Our weekly news blast is back, bringing you all the latest from the world of Broken Lines!

    Physics and Bug Hunting

If youve been following us for a while, you may have noticed that quite a few of the bugs that weve been sharing seem to be related to the games physics. We wanted to figure out why some of the soldiers turn into ragdolls when they are killed (they would twitch all over the place and randomly fly into the distance). So our Lead Programmer placed a model inside some carefully positioned walls to try and trigger the bug.
As you can see, we were able to reproduce the bug, which makes fixing it so much easier!

The Return of the Dev Diary

The fifth Broken Lines dev diary has just been published! In this edition, we focus on the primary weapons and their abilities. Each primary weapon has a normal auto-fire mode and a special ability that the player has to manually activate. [previewyoutube=q2k582D7PgE;full][/previewyoutube]

Broken Lines - Making our way to the Press

Our weekly news blast is back, bringing you all the latest from the world of Broken Lines!

Broken Lines Tip of the Week

Did you know that if you play Broken Lines in specific difficulty modes, permadeath is a feature that you will have to watch out for?
We have three different difficulty modes: easy, normal, and hard. If you play normal and hard mode, permadeath is enabled. In normal mode, every unit can be revived once per game day, the first time that they go down they can be revived, however, the second time will result in a permanent death if they die a second time, then youve lost that unit for good. Can you guess what hard mode means? If you guessed that it means one death results in permadeath, then youre right! Do keep in mind that this is not the only way to lose units, if youre not careful, the decisions made in-game can cause them to desert. Well have more on that next week!

    Broken Lines in the Media

Development on Broken Lines has been going very smoothly and were on track to release the game in Q1 of 2020. Game Development Fun

This week weve got quite a bit of news from the world of Broken Lines game development, so sit tight!

    From Sandbox to the Prototype

In the last month, we shared a few photos and slideshows from our very early days, showing you how we used an unconventional method to design Broken Lines - by playing in a special sandbox. Well, did you know that we took the sandbox created map design, and created an actual in-game version of it for our early game prototype? The machine gunner was just as deadly in-game as it was in our sandbox! [previewyoutube=EsSX1WoTU18;full][/previewyoutube]

    Beta Bug Fun

As you may have noticed, we do enjoy sharing the various bugs that we find in our closed beta, mainly because theyre usually very funny to look at. Naturally, we quickly find the source of the bug and fix it, so no need to worry about the final release! This weeks bug was some strange behavior when it came to pathfinding. Instead of walking to one point, the squad members would continue to walk around in circles, as if they were looking for someone in the grass!

As we get closer to our release date (still scheduled for Q1 of 2020) we decided that its time for our homepage to get a big rework! So, introducing the new Broken Lines homepage!

    Broken Lines Community and Beta

We are looking for beta testers to play through the game, find bugs and tell us what you feel needs improving. If you think you are up to the task, sign up here for a chance to get into the beta program! Please note, signing up does not guarantee a beta position as the spaces are limited. Furthermore, if you want to talk to the developers, get to know the other people playing Broken Lines, or simply want to learn more about the game, join us on Discord today! Were also starting up a new account on Imgur! If youre a fan of this fun image sharing community, check us out here.

    Game Development Fun

Starting things off weve got another fun bug that our game testers found. Somehow Avery developed the ability to move through walls. Though we think that Avery with superpowers is a fun idea, it certainly is something that we need to fix (and fix it we shall)!
Next up we have some eye-candy shots for you. No matter what you choose to do, you will encounter fierce resistance from these strange masked enemies. In this image, you can see them holding the line and laying down a barrage of fire. Though they are formidable, theyre not behind any cover so they can be defeated by a smart player. Perhaps they should have paid more attention to the importance of cover during their training!
And thats it for this weeks news blast, we hope that youve enjoyed it! Broken Lines - Happy Halloween

Our weekly news blast is back, bringing you all the latest from the world of Broken Lines!
Halloween has just passed and everyone from the Broken Lines team hopes that you all enjoyed yourself in whatever way you like the best! Our artist got in on the action by drawing a few Halloween special versions of the squad.

    Blocktober

After a long and fun session in the sandbox, we had to bring our ideas into our game engine, Unity. At this stage of development, we created a simple block version, allowing us to test the map before the level artist takes over. Weve prepared a quick video to show you first the block stage, and then what it looked like after the level artist took over! [previewyoutube=re6Qd9XdYd0;full][/previewyoutube]

    A New Dev Diary

The third episode of the Broken Lines Dev Diaries is here. Join us as we take a look at the tactical movement implemented in the game. As some of our developers can confirm, tactical movement is a key element of military training. Make sure to use the system that we've built to your advantage and you will always come out on top of the tactical situation at hand. [previewyoutube=GA-J8KTOrBU;full][/previewyoutube]

    Broken Lines Community and Beta

    Game Development Fun

Finding bugs before we release the game is vital after all everyone wants a fun and bug-free experience. So we spend a lot of time place testing the game, both internally and with our awesome beta testers. When we find the bugs, we do like sharing them with you, simply because they usually are rather strange and funny! This weeks bug is no exception, one of the enemy soldiers was found to have a very sensitive trigger on his rifle.
To round things off this week, weve got a scene from the game where the entire squad have gathered together in their camp and are able to take a breather before deciding on what to do next. Will they focus on survival, or will curiosity capture their minds and force them to head out and discover why they are there.

    Broken Lines - Sandbox Adventures

Our weekly news blast is back, bringing you all the latest from the world of Broken Lines!

    Sandbox Adventures

The reaction that we had to our Sandbox scenes have been very interesting to see as many people were genuinely surprised to see level design carried out in this way. As each photo we took tells a story, each week were going to take one of the photos and explain what is going on in it.
In this scenario, the black figure on top of the hill is covering the area with a large machine gun. The green guy had been attracting attention from the gunfire behind cover, but the cover, unfortunately, broke down under the pressure from the machine gun, so he is now lying on the floor wounded. However, his efforts were enough to divert attention away from the blue/ grey guy (with the movement line) who had snuck forward and is now close enough to toss a grenade at the machine gunner.

    Broken Lines Dev Diaries

Are you interested in learning how weve created Broken Lines? If so, youre in luck! Weve been working on creating a few dev diary videos that weve uploaded on Youtube, and currently, we have two videos for you to watch. The first of our dev diaries gives you an overview into the gameplay found in Broken Lines [previewyoutube=iRj5v420R7E;full][/previewyoutube] Our second video looks at how weve worked with shooting in our game [previewyoutube=YbNWLwYMF1Q;full][/previewyoutube]

    Game Development Fun

If youve been following us for a while, you may have noticed that were firm believers of having fun while we create our game. Keeping true to our beliefs, weve created some more unique designs for some of our characters, like this silly version of Avery!
When testing Broken Lines, we recently came across what can only be explained as a member of the Monty Python Ministry of Silly Walks.
This enemy soldier, though under heavy fire, has decided to practice his silly walk and share it with the world. And thats it for this weeks news blast, we hope that youve enjoyed it! Broken Lines Weekly News Blast - Blocktober Edition

Our weekly news blast is back, bringing you all the latest from the world of Broken Lines!

    Blocktober

Last week we introduced a before-and-after image taken from Broken Lines, and it was really popular so we wanted to continue with some more images and videos that show this. This month, in particular, we have a special opportunity as its Blocktober! What is Blocktober you ask? It is an event that takes part during October where game developers and designers celebrate the art of level design. They do this by looking back at the early stages of level design when the game is put together in blocks. We do have a very interesting history with using blocks, but perhaps not the same blocks that most game developers use. What exactly do we mean by that? Well check out this slideshow, it explains everything! [previewyoutube=LYsu1Sek8f0;full][/previewyoutube] It is important that game developers have fun while working on their projects!

    Voice Acting with Cissy Jones

Continuing with our look on the Voice Acting, weve got the next clip taken from our recording session with Cissy Jones. [previewyoutube=SEWH9Y1EVeo;full][/previewyoutube]

    Did you know?

When looking back at our older screenshots (like the one below) you may have noticed just how different the character models looked. But, did you know that there was a reason why they looked like that? These models were not placeholders, in-fact, the original design for Broken Lines was that the soldiers would resemble miniatures, which also explains the rather large plate found under them, they were all designed to look like one!

Broken Lines Weekly News Blast - A Look at Level Design

Our weekly news blast is back, bringing you all the latest from the world of Broken Lines!

Before and After - Level Design

Level design is a very interesting topic, some people assume that its quite easy, others know that it is harder. However, what most people do not know is the amount of work that goes into creating a single level. Weve got a quick before and after image for you to check out that shows this point. The before image was taken before the level artists got their hands on the scene, the after shows how things looked after they did their magic!

    Fun with Game Development

This week our developers have been hard at work on the game and fixing some interesting bugs. One of the more unique bugs that we fixed this week (found by one of our beta testers) was when grenades could be made to trigger over and over again, check out this video to see it in action. Dont worry, the devs have found the cause of the bug and have fixed it, but we wanted to share this one with you! [previewyoutube=XMwJjRTtmOo;full][/previewyoutube] Our final screenshot is a still from the final version of the level that we showcased in our before and after. Eye-candy at its best!

Broken Lines Weekly News Blast - Working with Tux

Our weekly news blast is back, bringing you all the latest from the world of Broken Lines!

    Broken Lines on Linux

Weve been asked this question quite a lot, so lets make an official announcement! Yes, Broken Lines will work on Linux!

    Broken Lines Community and Beta

Looking back at the original Game

We quite enjoy looking back at our earlier work, and what Broken Lines used to look like, it really gives us a sense of accomplishment as it shows us just how far weve come. Take this image, for example, it was taken very early on in the games development. Getting the blood to behave like a liquid was quite a challenge early on!
Looking to more recent images, this one was taken recently (as we test the game for bugs). A small part of us wonders if our game secretly wants that, as the bugs have a strange tendency to make our characters hug each other instead of fighting!

    Weekly Eye Candy

And lets end this weeks news blast with this eye-candy screenshot. What mystery lies in this thick smog? Explore with caution!

Broken Lines News Blast - The Full Squad

Our weekly news blast is back, bringing you all the latest from the world of Broken Lines!

    Know your Squad

Last week you saw us reveal the final member of the Broken Lines squad, and though we have one more character of interest to reveal (later on) we wanted to take this week to look over the team!
In total, there are eight members of this squad, from left to right they are: Recruit Fry The youngest in the squad and an educated combat medic, Fry has high ideals and the squad often perceives him as self-righteous - and they're not far off. On top of that, he has trouble aiming when under pressure, so he prefers to stay out of the line of fire. Recruit Wood A charming young recruit with a disarming smile, Wood's lean frame makes him the squad's fastest runner. Despite his good spirits, he will still speak his mind if he disagrees. He can be quite an opportunistic people-pleaser, with a joke ready for any occasion - and not always a good one. Veteran Hailey Formerly a field medic, Hailey was handed a gun at the front one dire day and asked to fight. Since then, she never looked back. A skilled Irishwoman who has lost too many of her comrades in battle, she bullies green recruits like Fry to keep her mind busy. Recruit Avery A hot-headed Scotsman, Avery keeps a sarcastic distance to everything related to the war and is generally impossible to lead a serious conversation with - especially since he often has his foot in his mouth. Avery is a quick decision-maker, but poor at dealing with the consequences. Veteran King A big, intimidating man from a family with a strong tradition of military service, King has a talent for manipulating people - with his meaty fists if necessary. For him, morality is a grey zone meant to be challenged. Veteran Morgan An iron-willed veteran with solid experience in leadership and combat, being a part of the war since its beginning is starting to take its toll on Morgan. His best days are behind him, and that terrifies him, but he's too stubborn to show any weakness. Recruit Sherman Sherman became a radio operator due to his talents and interests in electronics. After fleeing an occupied base, he ended up in the front and was promoted to the ranks - although he strongly disagreed with calling it a promotion'. He tries to avoid unnecessary violence and has a strong sense of justice. Veteran Conner Considered eccentric by most of the squad, Conner guards her past and personal life carefully. She works best alone with a rifle, hunting enemies and animals; after a recent head injury, she tends to confuse the two. Most people cleverly keep their distance, even on her good days.

Broken Lines News Blast - Voice Acting Special

Were back with our weekly new blast, summarizing what weve been up to. As an added bonus, weve been recording a very special person who weve brought in to do some voice acting! So, without further ado, lets get into it!

    Know your Squad

The character of the week is the Veteran Morgan.
An iron-willed veteran with solid experience in leadership and combat, being a part of the war since its beginning is starting to take its toll on Morgan. His best days are behind him, and that terrifies him, but he's too stubborn to show any weakness.

    Voice Acting with Cissy Jones

If that name rings a bell, then its for a very good reason! Cissy Jones is a BAFTA-winning actress that weve been lucky enough to bring to Broken Lines to do some excellent voice acting for us. Naturally, we recorded the entire process and in the coming weeks, we will be publishing clips from her session. To give you a taste of what it was like, here is the first clip taken from when she was recording the opening lines from our trailer! Be sure to come back next week to see some more! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yYx24i4KHc

    Broken Lines Beta

If you think you are up to the task, sign up in here for a chance to get into the beta. Please note, signing up does not guarantee a beta position as the spaces are limited.

    Game Development Fun

Have you ever wondered what the very first scene looked like when we began working on Broken Lines? Well, wonder no more!
This is a screenshot that we took when we had just begun work on Broken Lines, we had just opened Unity for the first time and wanted to see what we could put together. Looking at this screenshot, and comparing it to the actual game as it is now, were sure that youll agree that weve come a really long way! Jumping a few years forward, weve got a much more up-to-date screenshot. A close look at an enemy soldier.
At first glance, this may look like a normal enemy unit, however, look closer. There are a few things that are slightly off (by design) and relates to the games story. Can you see what is wrong, and perhaps guess what has happened? So thats it for this weeks digest, we hope that youve enjoyed it! Broken Lines Weekly News Blast - Gamescom Special

Another week, another news blast! This time, along with our regular content, weve also got some awesome images and videos from Gamesom where Broken Lines has been met with a lot of enthusiasm!

    Know your Squad

The character of the week is Recruit Wood!
A charming young recruit with a disarming smile, Wood's lean frame makes him the squad's fastest runner. Despite his good spirits, he will still speak his mind if he disagrees. He can be quite an opportunistic people-pleaser, with a joke ready for any occasion - and not always a good one.

    Gamescom

Gamescom has been (and at the time of writing still is) a major blast for us and weve enjoyed every second of it. Game Development Fun

Last week our game development fun snapshot was all about models and colliders, this week we look back at a time where our models were slightly harder to find. Camouflage is important in Broken Lines, but total invisibility was not what we were expecting to do!

After a short break, the weekly Broken Lines news blast is back! Weve got all your favourite segments, from squad members to development snapshots. But thats not all, this week weve got something new - a way to get access to the Broken Lines beta.

    Know your Squad

In our last edition we highlighted the squad Medic, Hailey. If youre interested in learning more about her, check out the last news blast. Now to this week's reveal, we've got Recruit Fry, the Stubborn Nerd.
The youngest in the squad and an educated combat medic, Fry has high ideals and the squad often perceives him as self righteous - and they're not far off. On top of that, he has trouble aiming when under pressure, so he prefers to stay out of the line of fire.

Finally, we continue with our popular look at some fun snaps from the game's development. Looking back at some of our early works made us think that we might have had an attraction to dramatic poses, as you can see in this screenshot.

Broken Lines Weekly Digest - The Fantastic Third Edition

Welcome everyone, to this weeks weekly digest. Were continuing with our look at new characters, how the approval of the squad will impact your gameplay, and to wrap things up we have a fantastically hilarious screenshot from our game development team. So without further ado, lets get into it.

    Know your Squad

In last weeks edition of Know your Squad we re-introduced Conner to you. It was a reintroduction as Conner featured as the main character in our Teaser Trailer, be sure to watch it if you haven't seen it already! For this week, our focus is on Hailey, the squad medic!
This unorthodox medic will be vital to keeping the squad alive, which is interesting as her real talent seems to be ending the lives of others.

    Gamescom

Will you be attending Gamescom 2019? We sure will be! Head on over to the Indie Corner in hall 10.2 to meet us, get some awesome swag, and try out the game!

    Character Emotions

The reason why the Know your Squad segment of our weekly digests is so important is because the characters will respond to the players decisions with their own approval or disapproval. The player will need to find a way to balance this as, if a characters disapproval rating falls too low, that character may abandon the squad and desert. Players will be able to see what the characters think of them by looking at their portraits. Check out these work-in-progress examples to see what we mean.

    Game Development Fun

And finally, to wrap things up with a laugh, weve got another example of what happens when game development takes a hilarious turn! In one of our earlier tests, we somehow managed to convert one of the characters into what can only be described as a mutated version of Fantastic Fours Mister Fantastic, (do you see his stretching powers?).
So thats it for this weeks digest, we hope that youve enjoyed it! Broken Lines Weekly News Blast 2

Hello everyone and welcome back to our second weekly news blast from Broken Lines. In this edition we are going to continue with our 'Know your Squad' segment, help you find us at Gamescom, and share some of the fun that we have when developing the game. So without further ado, let's begin!

    Know your Squad

Last week we introduced Avery, the hot-headed Scotsman, giving you vital information to the characters back story, and how you can expect him to act in the game. This week, weve got a (sort of) new character to introduce - Conner. We say sort of because Conner featured in our teaser trailer,so many of you would have already got to know her.
Even on her good days, most people tend to keep their distance from her, but considering that she thinks that people just get in the way, that suits her just fine! If you want the full story behind Conner, check out the teaser trailer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xr1fVLSC4ao

    Game Development Fun

One of the funniest parts of developing a game is when you finally finish a new feature and test it out for the first time. Why is that you ask? Because it is almost always going to have a few unforeseen bugs that can be pretty funny to see (and frustrating to fix). Take this, for example, the characters all moved ok, but their leg positions were entirely wrong!
Other times, the issues would only trigger with specific interactions. Like in this example, the soldiers model was ok in normal play, but when he got damaged by one of the players characters, he would suddenly transform into what could only be described as an opera singer! Those are but a few fun stories from the world of Broken Lines development. Tip 2: Grenades have an area of effect. If used well they can be devastating against the enemy. But always be careful, grenades will harm your squad members if they are in the blast range.

Broken Lines releases their teaser-trailer for the 75th D-Day Anniversary

A story-driven turn-based tactical RPG to be released at the end of the year. June, 6, Thursday - Super.com, a video game publisher, proudly announces a brand new teaser trailer of Broken Lines, a story-driven turn-based tactical RPG by PortaPlay. Set in World War 2, Broken Lines tells the story of a group of allied forces that have crash-landed behind enemy lines, deep in Eastern Europe. With the chain of command broken and no intel about their surroundings, this ragtag band of soldiers face a desperate fight to stay alive. The all-new teaser trailer introduces one of the eight main characters of Broken Lines, Rosie Connor. In it, we see what her upbringing was like and how it influenced her as she grew up. All of this will be vital as players will need to know the intimate details of the squad members if they are to succeed in guiding them to survival. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xr1fVLSC4ao June the 6th marks the 75th anniversary of the Normandy Landings, and on this day alone, over 4000 allied soldiers gave their lives for the freedom of Europe. With so many people giving up their lives in just a single day, we wanted to release our trailer today to remind everyone that behind every soldier there is a person with their own unique reason to fight, says Hans von Knut Skovfoged, Creative Director at PortaPlay. This story-driven turn-based tactical RPG will be launched at the end of the year for PC, and later for consoles.

The squad has crash-landed behind enemy lines, in the heart of Eastern Europe. With no officers, no leaders, and no intel, they must find an unbreakable resolve if they are to survive.
But with only their training and instincts to guide them, survival becomes a difficult goal. First of all, they need to learn to work together to have any hope of coping with the challenges ahead.
Each survivor has their own views on what to do, and their own principles on what is acceptable. Some want to investigate what caused their crash, others want to stay low and avoid detection by the enemy. There are even whispers of desertion.
It is your task to be the unseeing hand that will guide this ragtag group of soldiers through their struggles. Make your decisions wisely, for they will have real consequences on the fates of the survivors.

    • Tactical RPG with diverse characters. Experience the story through the eyes of each soldier as they fight for survival in an alternative WW2 setting.
    • Turn-based planning with simultaneous execution (WeGo turn-based gameplay)
    • Authentic tactical choices: suppression, destructible cover, realistic ballistics, and camouflage are at your disposal.
    • Rogue-like campaign structured with different narrative paths, resources, and permadeath.
    • A challenge for even the most experienced gamer. A far-reaching moral system means that the soldiers may desert at any moment if you prove to be incompetent.
    • An emotional story, tense atmosphere, and multiple endings based on the decisions that you make.

“Victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory however long and hard the road may
be; for without victory, there is no survival.”

    ― Winston Churchill
