Hi folks, We just released a new version of DemonCrawl! v1.95 focuses on balance changes and stability. Perhaps the most significant change is a buff to all Mastery Dolls. With a pricetag of 30 coins, we found that most Dolls were not paying off as quickly as we would have liked. Now, these items will activate at the start of every stage, and their effects scale based on your current number of mastery charges as opposed to your max charge count. This should create some interesting opportunities where you have to decide between keeping your charges for empowered Doll effects, or spending them on a clutch ultimate ability. Additionally, v1.95 allows us to start and end holiday events without needing to push a client update. This change was motivated by a recent hardware failure that caused the Easter event to last a lot longer than intended. Here is the new schedule for DemonCrawl holidays going forward:
- Easter: In real life, this holiday can take place anywhere between March to May, depending on the year. The in-game event will take place on either the first two or last two weeks of the month of Easter.
- Summer: July 1st - July 14th
- Halloween: October 15th - October 31st
- Birthday: November 1st - November 7th
- Christmas: December 15th - December 31st
New Features
- New passive item: Varnish - "Favor all armor items. Whenever you equip armor, fortify it by 3."
- New passive item: Whittling Knife - "Favor all Doll items. Whenever you gain a Doll, gain a mastery charge."
- New passive item: Birthright - "Gain a random favored item at the start of each stage. You are even more likely to find favored items."
Quality of Life
- Added dictionary definition for "evasion"
- Replaced hacky Borderless Windowed method in favor of native GameMaker functions
- Special Events can now be applied without requiring a client patch

Balance Changes
- Mastery Dolls buffed: all Mastery Dolls now activate at the start of each stage, in addition to whenever you activate your mastery
- Related to the above change, Dolls now consider your current number of mastery charges instead of max mastery charges
- Altar of Blood buffed: "Automatically discharges whenever you take less damage than the max stage power. The max stage power becomes the amount of damage taken."
- Apple Bonsai buffed: status duration reduced from 40 turns to 10 turns
- Grappling Hook buffed: "Reveal the corner cells."
- Mud buffed: "For the next 100 turns, gain a Minion whenever you use a magic item."
- Divine Mud reworked: "For the next 500 turns, gain a Minion whenever you use a magic item. The next time this activates, get an additional Minion."
- Scrap Hopper buffed: "Destroy target chest. The next time you open a chest, gain souls equal to your number of Scrap Hopper status effects."
- Horoscope price reduced from 10 to 7 coins
- The Gambler now has a several-turn "buffer" when he spawns to prevent him from immediately losing coins
- Guild cost of Scientist increased slightly
- Negative evasion now gives monsters a chance to strike repeatedly

- Fixed an issue with the "Confine Mouse Cursor" option
- Fixed an issue with the "Auto" aspect ratio button

The first DemonCrawl patch of 2023 is now live!
This update includes 10 new items, a new stage mod, several balance changes, and substantially expanded monster drop tables.
Among the new items are 3 unique types of minions. In addition to Minions and Magic Minions, you can now acquire Big Minions, Rabid Minions and Shiny Minions. Each one corresponds to a different item category and has its own strengths and weaknesses.
Many of the remaining items are also minion-oriented. For example, Pact of Nature is a powerful lategame item that rewards you for having a variety of different minion types.
We hope these additions will breathe fresh air into Hunter comps, which haven't received many exciting tools in a while. Actually, Big Minion was planned for inclusion in DemonCrawl's original release, but we hadn't figured out the right niche for him until now.
Speaking of things that haven't changed in a while, there's finally a new stage mod! It's called Stable and it's fairly straightforward: any effect that would modify a cell has a 50% chance to fizzle. That means gleans, reveals, solves, conceals, explosions, and auras may or may not succeed. There are certainly ways this could work in your favor, which is how we like to design negative effects in DemonCrawl.
Finally, the list of monster item drops is quite lengthy now. In fact, we went through the game's 900+ items and tried to assign anything that made sense flavor-wise. It may be a while before some of the rarest drops are discovered by the community, so if you find anything cool or unexpected, we encourage you to share it on our Discord server!

Finally, we are working to resolve ongoing issues with DemonCrawl on Android and iOS. DemonCrawl turned three years old on November 5th! On its previous two birthdays, we gave away exclusive cake-themed avatars. This time, we're ramping up the festivities a bit.
v1.89 adds a special Birthday stage that can be accessed by finding Cake artifacts in Hard Mode.
Additionally, you can earn 4 avatars and a new inventory skin by opening Presents. This Mini Event will only last a week - it is scheduled to end on November 17th.

Hi folks, We are currently looking into issues affecting DemonCrawl on a few platforms - most notably, there appears to be a bug in the latest version of the Steamworks extension for GameMaker that prevents our game from launching on Ubuntu. We filed a bug report with GameMaker on Monday but have not yet received a response. While Linux represents a small fraction of DemonCrawl's playerbase, we are nonetheless troubled by the serious nature of this issue. Having depended on GameMaker for many years, we have learned *not* to update our runtimes and extensions right away. We have seen serious bugs crop up even on GameMaker's stable branch. In this case, however, we had an obligation to update our pipeline in order to satisfy new requirements from Apple. Given that we compile DemonCrawl to 5 different platforms using the same codebase, this puts us between a rock and a hard place. We don't have a simple way to make use of different GameMaker runtimes per OS. Therefore, we have decided the best course of action is to rollback DemonCrawl on Linux to a build from April 14th - this is something we haven't had to do before, but it is working correctly in our test environment. One upshot is that Linux players will get to enjoy/suffer an extended Easter event... On a better note, the latest version of GameMaker appears to have fixed launch issues on macOS. We are now able to run the game through Steam on Monterey v12.3.1. If DemonCrawl is still giving you trouble on Mac, please make sure your operating system is up to date and leave a reply here with your system specs so we can investigate further. One last thing: GameMaker has also replaced a number of important Android features with new extensions (namely AdMob, Google Play Cloud and Achievements). We are in the process of updating our code in accordance with GameMaker's documentation, but we have already identified an issue related to AdMob on iOS that will require GameMaker's attention. --- I realize this was kind of a bummer post, but game dev ain't always sunshine and rainbows, folks. A new update for DemonCrawl is now available! Kept you waiting long enough, huh?
This patch introduces the Bookworm mastery, 22 new items, a new boss, and many other goodies.
As the Bookworm, you will generate a steady supply of reading materials by visiting special stages. You can stack book effects together for powerful synergies and study them to influence the items you'll find throughout your quest!
Introducing Hellwether - this new boss can summon monsters in his quadrant and has the ability to jump around the board whenever you make a mistake. Keep your distance!
Among the new items in v1.84 are a collection of passives called "Medals." These simple yet tremendously useful items allow you to encounter certain strangers in every stage. There's a Medal for each basic stranger type, and you can obtain them as early as the first stage. They're very good for setting up specific strategies.

Yes! For the last several months, we have been working hard on not just v1.84, but TWO additional updates for DemonCrawl. We plan to release the next patch quite soon - it is our annual Easter update and it contains a bunch of new holiday content to explore. As for the third update? Well, it's too early to talk about that, but I can guarantee it's easily the most exciting. :-) As an aside, if we haven't posted news about DemonCrawl in a while, it's not that we've abandoned the game--on the contrary, we're knee-deep in development! Turns out, indie development is a bit of a double-edged thing. We can create content at our own pace, free of the financial and legal obligations that often hinder AAA titles. (Love it!) However, limited money and manpower means that allocating resources toward development directly takes away from our community engagement and marketing efforts. (Don't love it!) All of these things are important, and we try to strike a good balance. At the end of the day, though, substantial content updates are what gamers care about most. That's our top priority with DemonCrawl. Certainly, some developers focus more on marketing or social media presence, but it's not really our style. Most gamers already understand this stuff - you guys are super patient with us when it comes to communication turnaround times and we really appreciate it. You're an awesome bunch, truly. Nevertheless, the reason we're explaining this is because we have embarked on something bigger than the bi-weekly content updates you may have come to expect from DemonCrawl. The first DemonCrawl update of 2022 has arrived!
We spent the last few weeks designing a new mastery called Ninja, a new set of demonic Patreon rewards, and 20 new holographic effects. Yes, you read that right! We have overhauled our holograph workflow and can now produce these kinds of effects in a matter of hours.
We also think they look much nicer than many of the original holographs, but you can judge for yourself:

Next up is the new Ninja mastery, which possesses a unique form of damage mitigation based on exposed cells. It also completely bypasses monster reveal and death effects as if you were permanently wearing Shinobi Sandals.
In our testing, it's a decently consistent mastery that doesn't require too much micromanagement. Not too tough to unlock either!

We just deployed a new content patch for DemonCrawl! This update includes 5 new items, 3 new daily missions, some performance improvements and a secret stage.
The Friendly Mimic is an awesome new passive designed by Mythic Patron CaineSenpai. It transforms your chests into strong familiars that help you complete stages!
While designing this item, CaineSenpai made an important note:
"If you lost the ability to open the chests [and] got the item early game it wouldn't be very fun locking you from any new items"
We agreed on that, and decided to give the Friendly Mimic a bit of special functionality: even though it converts your chests to familiars, you can still open them as if they were regular chests! It's a lot of fun.

We just deployed a large content patch for DemonCrawl!
This update includes over 20 new items, a monster drop table overhaul, a rework for the Wizard mastery, and various balance changes.
Among these new items are two sets of armor - Lightstone and Police armor. Check out the Lightstone set below:
We are also hard at work on an even larger patch, which is why we haven't been very active on social media lately. We can't say much about it yet, but we think it will be 100% worth the wait!

This update includes 6 new items, an engine improvement that allows us to create consumable items with targeted effects, several redesigned sprites and balance changes.
Also, you can now create parties in Arena by inviting people from your Steam friends list! This feature is still a work in progress, so you may need to be a bit gentle with it.

It's time to break out the swimming trunks!
We are excited to announce that DemonCrawl's first-ever Summer Event will commence on July 1st at around 2 PM EST! It will launch alongside the open beta of DemonCrawl's brand new multiplayer gamemode, which you can read more about in our previous announcement post here.
As with our Easter, Halloween, and Christmas events, DemonCrawl: Summer will introduce limited-time missions with unique rewards. The event will only run for 2 weeks, so don't miss your chance to pick up some rare holiday swag!
Patreon backers will have an opportunity to check out a preview build of DemonCrawl: Summer starting on June 27th. That's only a couple days away! We still have some Beta Tester slots available if you're interested in joining us.

Hi folks, Great news! After several months of development, DemonCrawl Arena will finally enter its Open Beta phase next week on July 1st.
What is DemonCrawl Arena?
DemonCrawl Arena is a new gamemode where you compete against 7 other players in an online Battle Royale! It will launch with two divisions, Autosweeper and Manual division. The former features an "AI autosolver" that will handle the minesweeping for you. This will allow you to concentrate on item management and other strategies. It's our take on the autobattler genre. Who can join the Open Beta?
Anyone with a Steam copy of DemonCrawl will be able to participate in the Open Beta. This is effectively a "soft launch" of the new gamemode for all desktop platforms (Windows, Mac, and Linux). Mobile players will have to wait a bit longer. There is no signup required.
Are there any rewards for playing Arena?
Yes! You can unlock new avatars after reaching a certain number of wins and rating (ELO) in either gamemode. We plan to rotate these rewards out on a seasonal basis.
You will also earn AP (Arena Points) at the end of every match. AP is automatically redeemed for Prizeboxes containing cosmetic items, similar to Beyond Mode.
Will you wipe online progress between the Open Beta and Full Release?
Unlikely, but possible. We have no plans to wipe player progress or ratings, and would only do so in the event of a major technical issue that forces our hand.
Can I play Arena for free?
Yes, anyone who owns DemonCrawl will be able to play Arena without any additional charges! We have no plans to introduce subscription fees at this time. That said, we do need to cover our server costs. You will have the option of purchasing an Arena Plus package on Steam that grants additional perks in multiplayer only - this DLC will not affect your singleplayer experience. These perks will include a custom sign editor, expressive emotes, extra homeland/mastery slots to pick from, and additional AP per game. Those of you who have generously supported us on Patreon will be receiving free copies of the Arena Plus DLC. Keep an eye on your Patreon inbox next week for your Steam key. <3

Hi folks,
It's been a few weeks since our last DemonCrawl update - rest assured, we have been working hard to bring you a lot of exciting new content!
A big patch will drop next week, and it will include TWO new masteries: the Ghost and the Poisoner.
Implementing the Ghost was a technical challenge, as we had to rewrite a number of systems to support the "ignore death" mechanic. In the end, we think it was worth it - Ghost plays very differently than most masteries and encourages you to approach the game in a completely new way.

Poisoner's development was less complicated than Ghost, but we spent quite a while figuring out how to tie together a bunch of Poison-related mechanics in an elegant way. This mastery is a sort of "Jack of All Trades," as it involves omens (Poison), targetable magic (Poison Blade), auras (Toxic), and object destruction (also Poison Blade)... all at the same time! We're excited to see what kinds of deadly combos you can pull off.

Hi folks,
We just released an update for DemonCrawl that includes 6 new items, a save file repair system, and performance improvements related to GameMaker (the engine that DemonCrawl is made with.)
The save repair system can analyze your save files--including backups--to recover your progress in the event of data corruption. Such problems are rare but can occur for a variety of reasons, including hardware failure, app crashes, and hiccups in the cloud service. Until now, we have done our best to manually repair save files that players have sent to our support desk, but as our playerbase increases, so does our email load - we are at the point now where an automated solution is necessary.
We believe this new system will be able to handle the majority of save issues, but even when it can't, it will generate a log file with diagnostic information called "_repairs.txt" inside of your %localappdata% folder. If you're having issues with your save, you should consult this file for clues about the underlying cause.
On another note, we are making great progress toward the multiplayer Arena gamemode - we expect to have it ready in a matter of weeks. Until then, we will include any Arena changes in the stable patch notes so you can get a better sense of our development.

In other news, we just released a beta update that introduces many new features for Arena, our online multiplayer gamemode. Beta testers can now choose between Autosweeper and Manual Division, create custom sign messages, apply paints & holographs to emotes, and check out new Arena-only stage mods. While we're still a few weeks out from Arena's stable launch, we wanted to share the patch notes with you below - this should give you a good sense of our progress. We just released a big update for DemonCrawl that includes a new mastery called Hypnotist, the fierce Scrapper boss, and 15 new items!
(After a lengthy conversion process, DemonCrawl is now running on GameMaker v2.3. This is a requirement for getting our iOS port approved on the App Store - you can read more about the situation here. We plan to re-submit DemonCrawl to Apple's review team in the next couple days.)

When making a mistake as the Hypnotist, you won't receive damage right away - instead, you'll get a 3-turn status counter, giving you time to either mitigate the attack or brace for impact.
Hypnotist also has the ability to lengthen status effect counters. This pairs well with the delayed damage mechanic, but also has great combo potential with status-based items like Candy or Truthsayer Quill.

iOS Delay Pt. 2
Despite our best efforts to have the iOS port ready, we ran into a major setback in Apple's approval process. Unfortunately, we have no choice but to postpone the iOS release once again. We don't make this decision lightly. While we won't announce another release date at this time, we feel that we owe our players an apology as well as a full explanation for the delay. The following is a technical recap of the situation. Please keep in mind that we are not trying to shift the blame here - we take full responsibility for failing to meet our deadline. That said, we feel it is important to keep our players in the loop when things don't go as planned. DemonCrawl's iOS port was finished well before the original launch date. The game ran great on our test devices, and we felt confident that we would be able to pass Apple's review for quality control. To the contrary, Apple declined our submission on the grounds that microtransactions were not working properly. It turned out that DemonCrawl could not retrieve a list of MTX products from Apple's servers. We assumed that we must have made a mistake in our implementation somewhere and spent the next several days reviewing our code. Our investigation turned up short. After several more days of going back and forth with Apple's support team, the microtransactions suddenly began working. This was great news, but it cost us a lot of time and we still aren't sure what exactly fixed the problem - our best guess is that there is some undocumented verification process for new iOS microtransactions. After thoroughly testing our MTX, we re-submitted our iOS build to Apple and announced the one-week delay. We figured this would give Apple enough time to conduct their second review (this usually takes around 24 hours) and give us enough time to address any other problems that came up. DemonCrawl was declined again. The review team stated that our microtransactions were causing a crash, which we could not reproduce. We eventually discovered a probable cause - the GameMaker IAP (in-app purchase) extension was known to be buggy on very particular setups. An update for the extension was released a few months ago, but we cannot install it because it is only available for the cutting-edge GameMaker v2.3, which would require complete DemonCrawl project conversion. This is no small task. TL;DR We are in a tricky situation because we just learned that it is probably impossible to publish an iOS app made with a version of GameMaker older than v2.3. DemonCrawl is made with v2.2. Upgrading to v2.3 requires a significant overhaul of DemonCrawl's codebase. Curiously, GameMaker's iOS documentation does not mention the v2.3 requirement, so it caught us off guard at the very last minute. Still, we hold ourselves responsible for the delay as we should not have announced the iOS launch date as early as we did. ---
What's next?
We are now beginning the process of upgrading DemonCrawl to GameMaker v2.3. Thousands of lines of code need to be rewritten, but we are making good progress. We hope to have it ready for beta testing by the start of next week. Once our beta testers have had some time with it, we will prepare another submission for Apple and keep you apprised of any developments. We will not announce a new iOS launch date until we are 100% sure there will be no further obstacles in the review process. Thank you for understanding.

Unfortunately, we must postpone the launch of DemonCrawl on iOS by one week as we work with Apple to resolve a few outstanding issues with our app store listing. The release date is now set for March 3rd. We take full responsibility for the delay - this is our first iOS product and we frankly underestimated the amount of setup work involved. The good news is, the game itself runs great on iOS. We're actually seeing better framerates here than on Android, which we can probably chalk up to GameMaker optimizations. Our low-end iPod even manages to run at 60 FPS on the Customize screen, despite all of the demanding paints and holographic effects. Pretty exciting stuff! In related news, a stability patch will be released for all platforms on iOS launch day. We will spend some time this week going through our backlog of emails and bug reports, addressing as many issues as possible for the next patch. More to come soon!

We have just released DemonCrawl v1.68 - dubbed Robot Uprising II.
The machine overlords have returned in the form of TWO new bosses!
The twin pinnacles of Dark Science, UNIT-8055 and Automaton are equipped with sophisticated AI protocols that allow them to perfectly emulate their life-and-blood counterparts...
- UNIT-8055 will echo the effects of another boss whenever it collects a Dark Heart. By supercharging itself with Electric cells, it seeks to surpass its own creators and become the ultimate lifeform.
- Automaton is the result of a terrifying project to mass produce artificial boss mods. It possesses rapid self-learning abilities and must be dealt with before it's too late.

iOS Port
We have been working to bring DemonCrawl to iOS for quite some time, and we're finally on the home stretch! We are pleased to announce that DemonCrawl will launch on the App Store on February 24th, pending any delays in the approval process. With the addition of iOS, DemonCrawl will be available on all major desktop and mobile platforms, which means we can finally turn our attention to a [certain game console] people have been asking about... ;-) ---
Secret Announcement...
Last year, our main focus was the development of ports and expansions. We managed to complete 2 of each - we are really proud of that, and we couldn't have done it without your support! Now we are shifting gears a bit. In 2021, we want to focus our efforts on additional gamemodes. We have three ambitious gamemodes planned, one of which is already well underway. We expect it to enter beta sometime in February, around the same time as the iOS launch. We will unveil more details about this mysterious gamemode in the coming weeks, but for now let's just say it's a real game-changer and may well surprise you. ---

We now plan to shift gears and begin working on one last special event for 2020 - we want it to be as big (or bigger) than our recent Halloween event, so we definitely have our work cut out for us! DemonCrawl's Halloween Event has officially ended! We hope you enjoyed the spooky festivities and managed to avoid the sharp end of Maniac's cleaver.
Now that things are returning to normal (Maniac was prosecuted for his crimes and hauled off to a federal supermax prison somewhere) we have released a new content patch that includes 5 exciting stage mods, 6 new items, and a big rework for Demolitionist II.
We have also updated the stage completion logic such that you no longer have to open burning cells to achieve victory. This is an important change for specific stage mod combinations such as Nightmare + Burning.

To kick off the second week of our Halloween event, we have just released a big DemonCrawl update that includes 36 new items, 2 special chests, a new special stage, and an item archetype called Mastery Dolls! Ohh yeah!
Additionally, we have made the Maniac boss a bit less maniacal, giving you more counterplay even in bad openings. Some players have asked if the Maniac is a permanent boss - we can confirm that Maniac is not a standard member of the boss pool and will be disabled outside of the yearly Halloween event.

The wait is almost over - DemonCrawl's Halloween expansion finally launches TOMORROW!
We wanted to take a moment and spotlight two of the 40+ new items that will be included in tomorrow's update. These are no ordinary items... they were designed and developed in collaboration with DemonCrawl's first-ever Mythic Patron supporters!

First up is a new legendary item called Fireplace, designed by Mythic Patron Emberflame.
With a fitting name like that, you might have already guessed Emberflame wanted to create a powerful option for the Firefly's legendary slot, and we were totally on board!
As it turns out, there's very little elemental support in the legendary item pool - it was clear right away that this idea was a winner.
Fireplace is an interesting concept because it's much more than a mere Burning enabler. It dips into both status effect and gleaning mechanics, offering great synergy with other items and even other masteries. Have you ever wanted to play as a BURNING SPY? Because now you can.

Next is a new magic item called Elemental Fuel, designed by Mythic Patron Tom25w.
Tom brought a few different ideas to the table and let us choose the one that appealed to us most. As soon as we saw Elemental Fuel (originally called Magic Fuel), our mind was made up.
It's such an elegant design. Some of our favorite items are those with unique effects that can be summed up in a single punchy sentence. "Spread all auras to nearby cells." 6 words, no room for confusion, and it fits perfectly into many different builds.
We think Tom's numbers were exactly right too - at just 13 coins and 90 mana per use, Elemental Fuel is something you can pick up without a great deal of buyer's remorse, even if auras never come into play during your run.
At its worst, Elemental Fuel is an affordable safety net. At its best? Probably something nuts involving Ethereal aura and infinite mana.

We just deployed a new stability patch for DemonCrawl!
This update includes a new consumable item, additional balance changes for Survivor, and over 30 bug fixes. (Some much-needed housekeeping!)
Last week, we implemented significant changes to 6 masteries, most of which were well received. However, some players expressed dissatisfaction with the Survivor updates - we want to take a moment to address this and explain our solution in v1.59.
The Survivor mastery has always been about manipulating a state of injury to your advantage. We like that it creates interesting situations where you have to decide between healing to survive an imminent blow, or remaining in harm's way so that you can continue to reap the mastery's benefits.
Prior to v1.58, Survivor II provided a way to scale your build through Soul drops. While this fit the Survivor's M.O., it was a bit too unreliable - this is a class that most players unlock early on, so we think it should offer a decent amount of predictability. It and Guardian (formerly Knight) were originally conceived as "starter masteries" with somewhat boring but reliable designs.
Additionally, we were not a fan of intentionally taking damage in the first stage to activate Survivor II as early as possible, which was often the ideal strategy. It wasn't too powerful or anything, but it felt like an inconvenient and unintuitive mechanic. Plus, if you forgot to do it, your run was immediately at a disadvantage.
So, we decided to try scaling Survivor with the "Untouchable" award instead. This created a nice parallel with the Guardian mastery, but many players were quick to point out that rewarding Survivors for not taking damage was at odds with its core identity.
After some thought, we have come to agree. Here's our new solution:
In v1.59, the Survivor is once again rewarded for his injuries, but in a more reliable fashion. We also applied a quality-of-life "nerf" to Survivor I so that it provides max life instead of life - putting you in a state of injury from the start.
Survivor III is unchanged, meaning you still have the opportunity to restore all of your lives every few stages.

P.S. Due to relatively long compilation times for Mac and Linux, we have decided to release updates for Windows first, with the other platforms to follow in 3-4 hours. We have a big DemonCrawl update for you today. :-)
First off, our Mac build has entered the stable branch! We're happy to say that the porting process was relatively painless, and that we should be able to utilize the same Apple dev tools to begin building for iOS soon.
As for the patch itself, v1.57 introduces 5 powerful new items and a new stage mod. The mod is quite unique and will almost certainly make an impact on any stage that has it... we hope it poses an interesting challenge!
Additionally, we created a new type of Nomad that will trade one of your items for another item. He's like a Bazaar, but in Nomad form. There are a few other mechanic changes you can read about in the patch notes below.
Finally, we added 3 community-made cosmetics, the first of their kind. A big thank you to Cubear and Celestial for these awesome contributions!
We hope to add more community cosmetics in the near future. If you would like to submit your own work for consideration, please do so at DemonCrawl's official Discord server. We can't wait to see what you come up with. :-)

We just released a big update for DemonCrawl that adds selectable skins to Classic Mode! You can unlock Classic Skins by earning high scores in each stage of a regular quest.
If you manage to get every Classic Skin, you will be rewarded with the new Infinite Journey achievement. This patch introduces 20 achievements altogether!

Hi folks, We are very excited to announce that DemonCrawl has officially made its way onto the Linux operating system! We have decided to celebrate by running a 25% discount on DemonCrawl for the entire week, starting right now! If you're on Ubuntu version 16 or later, you can launch DemonCrawl from the Steam client and everything should "just work." That said, some players have informed us that the game also works great in other distros with a bit of elbow grease. (Note - Ubuntu is the only flavor of Linux we officially support at this time, but you can always reach out to us at support@therefore.games for help getting the game to work in a different environment.)

Not a Linux player? Don't worry - we are working hard to bring DemonCrawl to all major platforms. We can confirm at this time that the Mac and iOS ports are up next. :-) We are also in the process of externalizing all game strings for ease of translation. DemonCrawl has somewhere around 8000 unique lines of text, all of which need to be moved to external JSON files so our translation team can do their thing. About half of the work has been completed - item names, descriptions, stage mods, and much more are already loading through external JSON. We hope to have the rest of it done in the next month or so. Finally, we're cooking up a pretty large content update that should be ready by the end of the week (slated to enter Beta by Thursday or so)... we may post some spoilers about it in the Discord over the next couple days. ;-) Hope your week is off to a great start, and we'll talk again soon!

We just deployed an update for DemonCrawl that includes official Linux support, 5 brand new items, a prompt that lets you choose which legendary item to keep, various legendary tweaks, and several UI enhancements.

We have recently published a native Linux build of DemonCrawl through the Steam Beta program!
You can play DemonCrawl on Linux right now by supporting us on Patreon.
We hope to get it ready for worldwide release within the next several weeks. :-)
A couple important notes about DemonCrawl on Linux:
1. We have heard that DemonCrawl has always worked pretty well in Wine/Proton, but certain network features like the leaderboards crash the client, and there are significant slowdowns when hovering some items. We are happy to confirm that these issues are NOT present in the native Linux build.
2. Officially, we only support the latest stable build of Ubuntu. Unofficially, however, you might be able to get this thing running in other distros with a little elbow grease. Please reach out to us if you need any help doing so.

- Added a "posthumous hint" effect to show where you could have moved if you lose the quest

- Refactored event trigger code for better localization and (eventual) mod support
- We can now load event-driven item strings from external JSON files
- For example, if you want to change the Extra Pocket text that appears when you enter a stage, you would add a line called "Extra Pocket_msg_ENTER_STAGE" to English.json
- Dynamic text can be added to strings in the form of letter variables, e.g. "Reduced the stage power by $A!"

DemonCrawl's v1.48 patch is just around the corner! While it mainly serves to address balance issues regarding stage mods and masteries, it will also contain some very exciting new content. In fact, it is our largest update since the Sweeping Heights expansion!
Today, we would like to show you a new boss we have been working on. He's called the Heckaslug, and we must warn you - he's a little bit toxic. (His heart is in the right place though.)
HECKASLUG, THE POISON MONGER
- Gain Poison whenever a Dark Heart is collected.
- Whenever you make a mistake, lose lives equal to your number of Poisons.
- Creates a trail of toxic cells.
For the uninitiated: Poison is an omen that causes you to lose 1 life every 60 turns. This is direct life loss, meaning it can pierce armor and other forms of defense.
While omen immunity may help you deal with the effects of Poison, it cannot protect you from Heckaslug's "on mistake" ability. Instead, consider taking advantage of omen or status effect removal. Leeches are a good option! Hi folks, We are currently working on a large balance patch for next week, but in the meantime we thought our players might appreciate a few simple QoL features, including edge-based panning. Enjoy! We are releasing a beefy patch for DemonCrawl that offers borderless windowed fullscreen mode! This was not an easy feature to add in GameMaker, so we hope it proves useful. :)
Additionally, this patch includes 7 new items, a new Lv3 emblem, several balance adjustments, and more!
We also managed to fix a few longstanding bugs - cloud sync should behave better now!
NOTE: We had to fundamentally change DemonCrawl's display rendering in order to support the new fullscreen method. Should you encounter any visual issues in this update, please send us an email and we will investigate right away. If necessary, you may adjust your display mode in the settings.ini file located at %localappdata%\demoncrawl. Thank you!
