Hi folks, We just released a new version of DemonCrawl! v1.95 focuses on balance changes and stability. Perhaps the most significant change is a buff to all Mastery Dolls. With a pricetag of 30 coins, we found that most Dolls were not paying off as quickly as we would have liked. Now, these items will activate at the start of every stage, and their effects scale based on your current number of mastery charges as opposed to your max charge count. This should create some interesting opportunities where you have to decide between keeping your charges for empowered Doll effects, or spending them on a clutch ultimate ability. Additionally, v1.95 allows us to start and end holiday events without needing to push a client update. This change was motivated by a recent hardware failure that caused the Easter event to last a lot longer than intended. Here is the new schedule for DemonCrawl holidays going forward:

The first DemonCrawl patch of 2023 is now live!
This update includes 10 new items, a new stage mod, several balance changes, and substantially expanded monster drop tables.
Among the new items are 3 unique types of minions. In addition to Minions and Magic Minions, you can now acquire Big Minions, Rabid Minions and Shiny Minions. Each one corresponds to a different item category and has its own strengths and weaknesses.
Many of the remaining items are also minion-oriented. For example, Pact of Nature is a powerful lategame item that rewards you for having a variety of different minion types.
We hope these additions will breathe fresh air into Hunter comps, which haven't received many exciting tools in a while. Actually, Big Minion was planned for inclusion in DemonCrawl's original release, but we hadn't figured out the right niche for him until now.
Speaking of things that haven't changed in a while, there's finally a new stage mod! It's called Stable and it's fairly straightforward: any effect that would modify a cell has a 50% chance to fizzle. That means gleans, reveals, solves, conceals, explosions, and auras may or may not succeed. There are certainly ways this could work in your favor, which is how we like to design negative effects in DemonCrawl.
Finally, the list of monster item drops is quite lengthy now. In fact, we went through the game's 900+ items and tried to assign anything that made sense flavor-wise. It may be a while before some of the rarest drops are discovered by the community, so if you find anything cool or unexpected, we encourage you to share it on our Discord server!

Hi folks, The Mastery Balance Survey has concluded! Thank you to those 289 players who participated - it really does help us get a better idea of where DemonCrawl needs the most work. We can analyze the data in a lot of ways, but for now let's just look at the Top 5 Strongest, Weakest, and Most Balanced masteries as determined by the number of votes in each category, minus the votes from the other two categories. For example, a Mastery's "balance score" would be its number of "Don't Change" votes minus the number of "Buff" and "Nerf" votes. This isn't a flawless metric, but it's simple and fairly informative. -----

Hi folks, We are currently looking into issues affecting DemonCrawl on a few platforms - most notably, there appears to be a bug in the latest version of the Steamworks extension for GameMaker that prevents our game from launching on Ubuntu. We filed a bug report with GameMaker on Monday but have not yet received a response. While Linux represents a small fraction of DemonCrawl's playerbase, we are nonetheless troubled by the serious nature of this issue. Having depended on GameMaker for many years, we have learned *not* to update our runtimes and extensions right away. We have seen serious bugs crop up even on GameMaker's stable branch. In this case, however, we had an obligation to update our pipeline in order to satisfy new requirements from Apple. Given that we compile DemonCrawl to 5 different platforms using the same codebase, this puts us between a rock and a hard place. We don't have a simple way to make use of different GameMaker runtimes per OS. Therefore, we have decided the best course of action is to rollback DemonCrawl on Linux to a build from April 14th - this is something we haven't had to do before, but it is working correctly in our test environment. One upshot is that Linux players will get to enjoy/suffer an extended Easter event... On a better note, the latest version of GameMaker appears to have fixed launch issues on macOS. We are now able to run the game through Steam on Monterey v12.3.1. If DemonCrawl is still giving you trouble on Mac, please make sure your operating system is up to date and leave a reply here with your system specs so we can investigate further. One last thing: GameMaker has also replaced a number of important Android features with new extensions (namely AdMob, Google Play Cloud and Achievements). We are in the process of updating our code in accordance with GameMaker's documentation, but we have already identified an issue related to AdMob on iOS that will require GameMaker's attention. --- I realize this was kind of a bummer post, but game dev ain't always sunshine and rainbows, folks. This patch introduces the Bookworm mastery, 22 new items, a new boss, and many other goodies.
As the Bookworm, you will generate a steady supply of reading materials by visiting special stages. You can stack book effects together for powerful synergies and study them to influence the items you'll find throughout your quest!
Introducing Hellwether - this new boss can summon monsters in his quadrant and has the ability to jump around the board whenever you make a mistake. Keep your distance!
Among the new items in v1.84 are a collection of passives called "Medals." These simple yet tremendously useful items allow you to encounter certain strangers in every stage. There's a Medal for each basic stranger type, and you can obtain them as early as the first stage. They're very good for setting up specific strategies.

The first DemonCrawl update of 2022 has arrived!
We spent the last few weeks designing a new mastery called Ninja, a new set of demonic Patreon rewards, and 20 new holographic effects. Yes, you read that right! We have overhauled our holograph workflow and can now produce these kinds of effects in a matter of hours.
We also think they look much nicer than many of the original holographs, but you can judge for yourself:
Pretty cool, right?
Next up is the new Ninja mastery, which possesses a unique form of damage mitigation based on exposed cells. It also completely bypasses monster reveal and death effects as if you were permanently wearing Shinobi Sandals.
In our testing, it's a decently consistent mastery that doesn't require too much micromanagement. Not too tough to unlock either!

We just deployed a new content patch for DemonCrawl! This update includes 5 new items, 3 new daily missions, some performance improvements and a secret stage.
The Friendly Mimic is an awesome new passive designed by Mythic Patron CaineSenpai. It transforms your chests into strong familiars that help you complete stages!
While designing this item, CaineSenpai made an important note:
"If you lost the ability to open the chests [and] got the item early game it wouldn't be very fun locking you from any new items"
We agreed on that, and decided to give the Friendly Mimic a bit of special functionality: even though it converts your chests to familiars, you can still open them as if they were regular chests! It's a lot of fun.

We are excited to announce that DemonCrawl's first-ever Summer Event will commence on July 1st at around 2 PM EST! It will launch alongside the open beta of DemonCrawl's brand new multiplayer gamemode, which you can read more about in our previous announcement post here.
As with our Easter, Halloween, and Christmas events, DemonCrawl: Summer will introduce limited-time missions with unique rewards. The event will only run for 2 weeks, so don't miss your chance to pick up some rare holiday swag!

It's been a few weeks since our last DemonCrawl update - rest assured, we have been working hard to bring you a lot of exciting new content!
A big patch will drop next week, and it will include TWO new masteries: the Ghost and the Poisoner.
Implementing the Ghost was a technical challenge, as we had to rewrite a number of systems to support the "ignore death" mechanic. In the end, we think it was worth it - Ghost plays very differently than most masteries and encourages you to approach the game in a completely new way.

Poisoner's development was less complicated than Ghost, but we spent quite a while figuring out how to tie together a bunch of Poison-related mechanics in an elegant way. This mastery is a sort of "Jack of All Trades," as it involves omens (Poison), targetable magic (Poison Blade), auras (Toxic), and object destruction (also Poison Blade)... all at the same time! We're excited to see what kinds of deadly combos you can pull off.

We just released an update for DemonCrawl that includes 6 new items, a save file repair system, and performance improvements related to GameMaker (the engine that DemonCrawl is made with.)
The save repair system can analyze your save files--including backups--to recover your progress in the event of data corruption. Such problems are rare but can occur for a variety of reasons, including hardware failure, app crashes, and hiccups in the cloud service. Until now, we have done our best to manually repair save files that players have sent to our support desk, but as our playerbase increases, so does our email load - we are at the point now where an automated solution is necessary.
We believe this new system will be able to handle the majority of save issues, but even when it can't, it will generate a log file with diagnostic information called "_repairs.txt" inside of your %localappdata% folder. If you're having issues with your save, you should consult this file for clues about the underlying cause.
On another note, we are making great progress toward the multiplayer Arena gamemode - we expect to have it ready in a matter of weeks. Until then, we will include any Arena changes in the stable patch notes so you can get a better sense of our development.

We just released a big update for DemonCrawl that includes a new mastery called Hypnotist, the fierce Scrapper boss, and 15 new items!
(After a lengthy conversion process, DemonCrawl is now running on GameMaker v2.3. This is a requirement for getting our iOS port approved on the App Store - you can read more about the situation here. We plan to re-submit DemonCrawl to Apple's review team in the next couple days.)

When making a mistake as the Hypnotist, you won't receive damage right away - instead, you'll get a 3-turn status counter, giving you time to either mitigate the attack or brace for impact.
Hypnotist also has the ability to lengthen status effect counters. This pairs well with the delayed damage mechanic, but also has great combo potential with status-based items like Candy or Truthsayer Quill.

Unfortunately, we must postpone the launch of DemonCrawl on iOS by one week as we work with Apple to resolve a few outstanding issues with our app store listing. The release date is now set for March 3rd. We take full responsibility for the delay - this is our first iOS product and we frankly underestimated the amount of setup work involved. The good news is, the game itself runs great on iOS. We're actually seeing better framerates here than on Android, which we can probably chalk up to GameMaker optimizations. Our low-end iPod even manages to run at 60 FPS on the Customize screen, despite all of the demanding paints and holographic effects. Pretty exciting stuff! In related news, a stability patch will be released for all platforms on iOS launch day. We will spend some time this week going through our backlog of emails and bug reports, addressing as many issues as possible for the next patch. More to come soon!

Now that things are returning to normal (Maniac was prosecuted for his crimes and hauled off to a federal supermax prison somewhere) we have released a new content patch that includes 5 exciting stage mods, 6 new items, and a big rework for Demolitionist II.
We have also updated the stage completion logic such that you no longer have to open burning cells to achieve victory. This is an important change for specific stage mod combinations such as Nightmare + Burning.

To kick off the second week of our Halloween event, we have just released a big DemonCrawl update that includes 36 new items, 2 special chests, a new special stage, and an item archetype called Mastery Dolls! Ohh yeah!
Additionally, we have made the Maniac boss a bit less maniacal, giving you more counterplay even in bad openings. Some players have asked if the Maniac is a permanent boss - we can confirm that Maniac is not a standard member of the boss pool and will be disabled outside of the yearly Halloween event.

The wait is almost over - DemonCrawl's Halloween expansion finally launches TOMORROW!
We wanted to take a moment and spotlight two of the 40+ new items that will be included in tomorrow's update. These are no ordinary items... they were designed and developed in collaboration with DemonCrawl's first-ever Mythic Patron supporters!
Let's dive right in:

First up is a new legendary item called Fireplace, designed by Mythic Patron Emberflame.
With a fitting name like that, you might have already guessed Emberflame wanted to create a powerful option for the Firefly's legendary slot, and we were totally on board!
As it turns out, there's very little elemental support in the legendary item pool - it was clear right away that this idea was a winner.
Fireplace is an interesting concept because it's much more than a mere Burning enabler. It dips into both status effect and gleaning mechanics, offering great synergy with other items and even other masteries. Have you ever wanted to play as a BURNING SPY? Because now you can.

Next is a new magic item called Elemental Fuel, designed by Mythic Patron Tom25w.
Tom brought a few different ideas to the table and let us choose the one that appealed to us most. As soon as we saw Elemental Fuel (originally called Magic Fuel), our mind was made up.
It's such an elegant design. Some of our favorite items are those with unique effects that can be summed up in a single punchy sentence. "Spread all auras to nearby cells." 6 words, no room for confusion, and it fits perfectly into many different builds.
We think Tom's numbers were exactly right too - at just 13 coins and 90 mana per use, Elemental Fuel is something you can pick up without a great deal of buyer's remorse, even if auras never come into play during your run.
At its worst, Elemental Fuel is an affordable safety net. At its best? Probably something nuts involving Ethereal aura and infinite mana.

We just deployed a new stability patch for DemonCrawl!
This update includes a new consumable item, additional balance changes for Survivor, and over 30 bug fixes. (Some much-needed housekeeping!)
Last week, we implemented significant changes to 6 masteries, most of which were well received. However, some players expressed dissatisfaction with the Survivor updates - we want to take a moment to address this and explain our solution in v1.59.
The Survivor mastery has always been about manipulating a state of injury to your advantage. We like that it creates interesting situations where you have to decide between healing to survive an imminent blow, or remaining in harm's way so that you can continue to reap the mastery's benefits.
Prior to v1.58, Survivor II provided a way to scale your build through Soul drops. While this fit the Survivor's M.O., it was a bit too unreliable - this is a class that most players unlock early on, so we think it should offer a decent amount of predictability. It and Guardian (formerly Knight) were originally conceived as "starter masteries" with somewhat boring but reliable designs.
Additionally, we were not a fan of intentionally taking damage in the first stage to activate Survivor II as early as possible, which was often the ideal strategy. It wasn't too powerful or anything, but it felt like an inconvenient and unintuitive mechanic. Plus, if you forgot to do it, your run was immediately at a disadvantage.
So, we decided to try scaling Survivor with the "Untouchable" award instead. This created a nice parallel with the Guardian mastery, but many players were quick to point out that rewarding Survivors for not taking damage was at odds with its core identity.
After some thought, we have come to agree. Here's our new solution:
In v1.59, the Survivor is once again rewarded for his injuries, but in a more reliable fashion. We also applied a quality-of-life "nerf" to Survivor I so that it provides max life instead of life - putting you in a state of injury from the start.
Survivor III is unchanged, meaning you still have the opportunity to restore all of your lives every few stages.

P.S. Due to relatively long compilation times for Mac and Linux, we have decided to release updates for Windows first, with the other platforms to follow in 3-4 hours. This way we can prepare and deploy any crucial hotfixes without having to re-compile for all 3 systems. Expect to see this approach for all updates going forward.

Bigger than your average update, but smaller than Sweeping Heights. We won't give away too many details just yet, but let's just say it's going to be equal parts scary and sweet.
Finally, we have an update planned to go live later this week. It includes several important mastery changes that should shake up the meta, along with a new stage mod and your usual helping of bug fixes.

We have a big DemonCrawl update for you today. :-)
First off, our Mac build has entered the stable branch! We're happy to say that the porting process was relatively painless, and that we should be able to utilize the same Apple dev tools to begin building for iOS soon.
As for the patch itself, v1.57 introduces 5 powerful new items and a new stage mod. The mod is quite unique and will almost certainly make an impact on any stage that has it... we hope it poses an interesting challenge!
Additionally, we created a new type of Nomad that will trade one of your items for another item. He's like a Bazaar, but in Nomad form. There are a few other mechanic changes you can read about in the patch notes below.
Finally, we added 3 community-made cosmetics, the first of their kind. A big thank you to Cubear and Celestial for these awesome contributions!
We hope to add more community cosmetics in the near future. If you would like to submit your own work for consideration, please do so at DemonCrawl's official Discord server. We can't wait to see what you come up with. :-)

A couple important notes about DemonCrawl on Linux:
1. We have heard that DemonCrawl has always worked pretty well in Wine/Proton, but certain network features like the leaderboards crash the client, and there are significant slowdowns when hovering some items. We are happy to confirm that these issues are NOT present in the native Linux build.
2. Officially, we only support the latest stable build of Ubuntu. Unofficially, however, you might be able to get this thing running in other distros with a little elbow grease. Please reach out to us if you need any help doing so.

We are releasing a beefy patch for DemonCrawl that offers borderless windowed fullscreen mode! This was not an easy feature to add in GameMaker, so we hope it proves useful. :)
Additionally, this patch includes 7 new items, a new Lv3 emblem, several balance adjustments, and more!
We also managed to fix a few longstanding bugs - cloud sync should behave better now!
NOTE: We had to fundamentally change DemonCrawl's display rendering in order to support the new fullscreen method. Should you encounter any visual issues in this update, please send us an email and we will investigate right away. If necessary, you may adjust your display mode in the settings.ini file located at %localappdata%\demoncrawl. Thank you!

We're releasing a slightly bigger patch today that includes a new feature called Board Annotations as well as several bug fixes and balance changes.
