Hello again everyone! As is tradition by now we have a free patch to compliment the release of Hotels & Retreats coming on the 23rd of May and thats what this dev diary is all about. We have some new goodies for the base game, we have some updates to existing content, and we have new content for existing expansions adding more cross-DLC content. This update brings new additions to the base game, Green Cities, Parklife, Industries, Sunset Harbor, Airports, and Plazas & Promenades - and yes, it has new trolleybus options and roads!
We hope these changes and the additional trolleybus vehicles and roads will make them more useful in your cities! But trolleybuses arent the only transport vehicles getting an update. Following Hubs & Transports, weve taken a look at the capacity of ferries and agree they should be able to transport more passengers, so all ferries have their capacity increased by 30, meaning they now range from 40 to 80 passengers. Last on our list of balance changes are parks. While Hotels & Retreats add new tourism buildings to benefit your hotels, we wanted to make sure the original base game parks were still viable choices. Some of them were quite large or costly without providing similarly increased benefits. Those parks have had their cost, upkeep, entertainment, entertainment radius, and amount of visitors adjusted bringing the underperforming parks up to a level with the rest. For road-building, we have a new quality-of-life tool allowing you to control the zoning grid on roads with zoning. You can cycle through the different options of zoning on both sides, zoning only on the left, zoning only on the right, or no zoning at all, using the new Toggle Zoning button next to the existing road tools. You can select your preferred zoning when first building a road or change the zoning later on using the upgrade tool. Toggle zoning on both sides, one side, or off And with that, we have reached the end of the dev diary! This update and Hotels & Retreats will be available on the 23rd of May, and you can find the patch notes listing all the content, improvements, and bug fixes below. As we were not able to include all the bug fixes we planned in this update, we will have another small update fixing some bugs after this, the date of which is still to be determined. Until then we hope you enjoy this update and look forward to seeing how you use the new additions in your cities! --------------------------------------------------
Patch notes for 1.17.0-f3
Hotels & Retreats paid content

Forest fires can still be devastating to the city if your city lacks fire helicopters. And now, to the last item in our goodie bag! In 1.16.0 we added the option to select specific submesh variations for most ploppable buildings. With Hubs & Transport, were expanding this selection to growable buildings. This option is automatically available on growables that use the random submesh feature, whether theyre official buildings or from the workshop, and lets you choose between the different options. If you have a particular mural from Plazas & Promenades you love, you can now select it for your Wall-to-Wall specialization buildings. Variations are selectable for growables using the submesh variations system. That leaves us with just one thing to cover: The patch notes, which can be found . Thanks to your diligent bug reports we have a long list of over 65 bug fixes along with improvements and, of course, a list of all the new content. We hope you will enjoy these new additions and improvements. |
Were excited for you to get your hands on the new content coming in 1.16.1-f2. Below you can find a list of the new additions added with Hubs & Transport, the new Content Creator Packs, and the radio stations. We also have over 65 bug fixes and several improvements for you. Cities: Skylines comes with a massive workshop full of custom content that lets you customize your game to suit your playstyle, and if you use a lot of mods, you might be worried about what happens to your city now that patch 1.13.0-f7 is here. But fear not! I am here to guide you through the process and help you get back to building.
Will I be able to continue my old city?
Most likely yes, but it might be a few days depending on what mods you use. I'll help you figure out when you can safely start your city again.
Will insert mod be updated?
Most likely yes - a lot of our awesome modders are working hard to get everything up and running again. But some mods will need larger fixes and as modders only have their free time, we might wait a while for some of them. Now is a great time to tell them how much we appreciate their work! And if there are already several comments mentioning the mod is broken, you don't need to comment. The modder knows and will update when they can.
Which mods are broken?
Follow this thread for a list of known broken mods, and updates as more are discovered and others are fixed.
Which mods do I absolutely need to load my city?
I don't have a complete list, but generally mods that add a network like Network Extensions 2, More Train Tracks, Metro Overhaul Mod, One Way Train Tracks and Extra Train Station Tracks are needed to load a city once you have used the networks they add in your city. If any of these are broken you'll have to wait for them to be fixed to load your city again. 81 tiles is another mod you'll need to wait for to be updated if you have used it. Then there are mods like Traffic Manager: President Edition, any mod that changes population numbers (like Realistic Population and Consumption), Ploppable RICO and Plop the Growables, which you can load your city without, but it's not a good idea as your city will be chaotic at best and fall apart at worst. A good way to determine how much you need a mod is to think of what it does. If it makes some big changes to how things work in game, removing it will cause problems. If it's something that makes things more convenient for you but doesn't really change how things function once in your city, it isn't a big deal to get rid of.
Still having issues?
You might have mods that broke before this patch - maybe last patch or long before that. I recommend checking out this list of broken and abandoned mods to get rid of any old ones you still have. It's a constant work in progress, so it may not be a complete list. See the tab at the bottom on how to use. |

Hello! Welcome yet again to another Cities Skylines: Sunset Harbor Dev Diary! So please, stay a while and... read! |
Greetings, fellow city-builders, and welcome to another Sunset Harbor Dev Diary!
The Metropolitan Airport will bring citizens together from around the world. With these hubs, we've tied together all the new public transport services. The next Dev Diary is going to focus on completely different city services. We hope you liked these new features and are looking forward to the next ones! Until next time, city-builders! Greetings fellow city-builders and welcome to another Sunset Harbor Dev Diary!
To get started with trolleybuses, you first place a Trolleybus Depot. After that, you can place Trolleybus Roads and create Trolleybus Lines with roadside stops. Your depot will then send out trolleybuses to operate the lines. It is important to remember that the trolley poles must be attached to the wires at all times, so your Trolleybus Depot and your Trolleybus Lines must be connected by Trolleybus Roads as well! Trolleybus Depot sending out new trolleybuses. Taking passengers over the river. Thats the easy part! In the second part of this Dev Diary, we would like to shed light on what we did to make the trolley poles behave realistically. Unlike other diary entries, this one will be slightly more technical. Even if you are not that math and geometry savvy, we still hope you enjoy this inside look!
The Wire
Lets take a closer look at the roads! On every road segment, you will find three catenary masts: One at the start, one in the middle and one at the end. The electrical wires span the masts, and with some mathematical calculations we can find out the start and end coordinate of each wire section. Lets call them and (using a small arrow to mark them as 3D vectors). A mathematical formula to define the line of the wire would be with and When the bus is on the road segment, we want its pole to connect to the overhead wire defined by the mathematical formula above. is the coordinate where the pole is attached to the wire.
The Trolleybus
The game knows how the bus is positioned and rotated in the world, and from that it is possible to calculate the coordinate where the trolley pole is attached to the bus. Lets call it ! The trolley pole is made of sturdy metal, so it cannot stretch. That means the distance between the coordinate where the pole is attached to the bus () and the coordinate where the pole is attached to the wire () must always be equal to the length of the pole. Lets call it and define this formula to take that into account:
The Equation System
By inserting the first formula into the second one, we end up with a single equation with a single unknown variable c : With a few tricks we can transform it into a quadratic equation: Step 1: with Step 2: Step 3: Step 4: Step 5: We can use the quadratic formula to solve the equation. We will get zero, one or two values for c : Note that there will be no solutions if the part in the square root is negative (which happens if the wire is too far away from the bus). Note that the solutions for c calculated by this formula could also be out of range (), so we have to check that as well.
Choosing the Right Position
By inserting and into our wire formula , we can calculate two theoretical pole-wire-attachment coordinates and . One will be above the front part and the other above the back of the bus: As the pole of a trolleybus is typically facing backwards, we need to find out which of the two positions is the correct one. Havent had enough of vectors yet? Lets define a few more:
Using the dot product, we can easily find out if and one of the pole vectors are facing into about the same direction (> 0) or the opposite direction (< 0). We are specifically looking for the pole vector that faces in the opposite direction of , so our conditions would look like this:
Rendering the Trolley Poles
Uh, that was a lot of math! Now that we know where the pole is attached on the bus () and where the pole is attached to the wire (either or ), it is possible to render the pole in the correct position and rotation. As we learned, a trolleybus has two poles (otherwise the electrical circuit would be incomplete), so we will just repeat the same steps to draw the second pole. And now you know what kind of stuff goes on behind the scenes to render the poles! Of course, in order to make trolleybuses realistic, this was just one small portion of the overall work that was needed! The last shift of the evening. Once again, we've reached the end of a Dev Diary. We hope that you liked this insight into the development of Cities: Skylines and that we didnt scare you with all the formulas! Gotta say, the end result is really mesmerizing. We could just watch the buses circle around for hours! What do you guys think about the trolleybuses? Until next time, city-builders! Hey City Builders! |
So here's the deal: We know that nobody likes having to click a couple extra buttons to play the game, but we've given it a LOT of thought and we have some solid reasons why we want a launcher Additional comments, in response to your feedback: "We appreciate the feedback. We are listening, and we're working hard to make sure this launcher benefits players. Again, we have solid reasons to implement a launcher, which will result in a better game experience for players in the future =) I promise you that I personally think that some people are over exaggerating the launcher's advertisement purposes. We tell Cities players about Cities content. However, we respect your opinions and welcome your feedback on what you do and don't want to see. I encourage you to make your voice heard! I'd hope you can do it without so many hearts though And I'm going to put a stop to one false rumor. This has nothing to do with taking private info. We get some basic telemetry, but we're not installing spyware. |

Suggested Assets
---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ground pollution is caused mainly by industry, while the farming and forestry industry specializations don't cause ground pollution at all. Some of the Farm Area and Forestry Area buildings from the Industries DLC do create some pollution. It is also caused by other polluting buildings, such as fossil-fuel power stations and incinerators. Pollution will affect the ground immediately underneath the polluting buildings, as well a small surrounding area. Even if the source of the pollution is removed, it will take some time for the ground to return to an unpolluted state. If non-polluting buildings have uncollected garbage for a long time, they will also pollute the ground. Virtually all buildings produce sewage. Assuming you have have a decent water grid, this sewage causes no issues for any given building, and it instead is transported through the same pipes through which water is brought into the city. Having pipes containing both clean and contaminated water has no negative effect. The pipes should lead to an outflow where the polluted sewage is drained into a body of water. Water drain pipes are the simplest option for this drainage. Water downstream of these outflows will be discolored, indicating its polluted nature. Water pollution and its sources are also viewable in the same info view as for ground pollution. A poorly-positioned pumping station can pump polluted water back into the water supply network, which will make cims sick city-wide. It, therefore, is very important to place drainage pipes downstream of the pump stations. Traffic, industry, commercial zones, and various buildings (such as power plants and unique buildings) cause noise pollution. When placing a building that produces noise, a circle appears showing the area which will be affected by it. On roads, a general rule is "the heavier the traffic, the heavier the noise". Each type of vehicle has a noise pollution rating, so the amount of traffic noise is dependent not only on how much traffic is present on the road, but also on what types of vehicles are present. Large trucks will typically create more noise, while electric cars tend to be fairly quiet. Policies to encourage electric cars or restrict large vehicles can help reduce traffic noise. Biofuel buses have a lower noise rating than standard buses. |
