Pixels!

I recall enjoying lots of early computer games in my childhood with pixel graphics, blurry textures and minimal amount of graphic effects. And who doesn't? They had definitely a tint of charm and best of them tried to put the gameplay and storyline before the picture. On the contrary most of the modern-era games look like they where shot by Bay or Spielberg in real life post-apocalyptic-underwater-space-whatever environment although being terribly dull inside.

Today we're going to explore strange signal that originated from some point on Jupiter orbit in Project Amalthea: Battlegrounds world. The game is known for fast PVP battles but still have some PVE content and that new "dungeon" is among them. Meet Anomaly, 1-4 player co-op map in purple colors and in completely insane setting. And insane is not just a figure of speech.



Protagonist is here to explore the source of strange signals causing navigation interference. Also the quest tasks on the right hints that an Alien ship is involved! But wait, what that means?



I thought that something is wrong with my video card until I realized that was an intentional graphics effect. Wow! The pixels are huge on regular screen and somewhat strobe when you move, but strobing effect is much less annoying on High-DPI display. (Don't forget to click the pictures to see full size image). Anyway I got used to it in a minute. Then I found that pixelation is not the only anomaly effect - all of location dwellers are little bit cuckoo. And after flying there for a few minutes I'd bet I'll be joining them rather sooner than later. That started with guys complaining about stars in their heads. Then a drone offered me a laser sight correction and called for a few dozens fellows to perform the correction albeit my refusal. Another one was eager to show me his beautiful rocket...



And there is also a firework party that scared the sh*t out of me until I realized that they ARE just some fireworks and do neglectable amount of damage albeit looking scary. Funny thing that actual effects, names, GUI and other stuff are not pixelated applying the effect only to ships and asteroids.



There is also an enormous maze that reminded me the Alice in Wonderland. The difference that it's in space, tightly stuffed with proximity mines and not a hedge at all!



But the level of craziness is definitely somewhere near the Carrol's book. At least I though so before meeting the One-Punch Man. He has changed a bit from the manga and TV shows to the cosmic era. But one thing still intact: he kills with a single punch. Long recoil is the only thing that keeps that monster at bay. I "only" died a half a dozen times during this encounter.


And then there also was a short fused Marmot guy who sets everything on fire every 5 seconds, completely loony Brawler (well, you'll get used to all sorts of insanity there), guy named Glass shouting "Just run before I go nuts!!!" (like he wasn't nuts before) and swarm of lesser drones (crazy as well!) claiming they found the source on infection and apparently it's in my head...
The final encounter was a little bit short and not as crazy but I won't spoil it anyway. The only thing I could tell that the reward was worth it. And yes, game designers are definitely off their rocker!

Build 1.2.384

Tank and Power Engineer each got one more slot for weapons. Also, added new hull for Power Engineer.



Changes and improvements:
- additional performance optimizations, compressed icon texts
- conversation windows with stations are centered depending on the presence or absence of the side menu
- fixed a bug due to was impossible to enter the battles queue immediately after closing this list
- redone displaying and dragging slots with items
- when selling, you can no longer ckick "between" items
- fixed a bug due to which the missiles could "stick together" when fired at a certain angle and as a result it was easier to shoot down a rocket
- reduced Tank atack speed for 5%
- slightly weakened opponents in the Final Exam
- the Final Exam does not give Starcoins for win

Version 1.2

Fellow gamers!
We want to congratulate you with our new major game update.


Now with version 1.2 we have all new beginning of the game - at the end of the training course player immediately gets into a real battle for 3 or 4 people called Final Exam *. Its a Deathmatch battle where you need to score the most kills to win. But dont be afraid of losing the exam - we take top 3 pilots from the each group so you will have a chance to improve your skills.



Also the process of enlisting into the new battle was completely redone. The will be no more ** incomprehensible texts and settings, but at full-fledged map graphics instead with few extra details alike estimated waiting time for the battle.

We also reduced the number of triangles in the frame by 40% which should significantly affect old and integrated GPU performance.

* The Drone Junkyard is still in the game, but it must be created manually.
** You still can access the old mode pressing Advanced button


Other important changes in version 1.2.382:
- in the FFA games the best result and the current leader are shown on the right side
- various structures have been added to raid dungeons (don't forget to update the client!)
- removed the shortcut at the beginning of the Sect map
- Sect map is available at level 4 as 2-4 player game
- if game start takes longer than expected it can be started with fewer players
- a random queue does not invites a player if one of the tasks has already been completed there (quest, flag, other score)
- replaced NPC building models
- optimized models for buildings of other factions
- optimized asteroid models
- fixed problems with opponent level display in battle table, incl. level up at the end of the game
- fixed problems with 2x (and sometimes even 0x!) damage from the mobiles in raid dungeons
- damage and kills are correctly counted in dungeons
- various changes in formulas and balance
- fixed some cases of mobs getting stuck in asteroids
- fixed issues where it was impossible to enter the battle even with a sufficient number of players
- the first game launch is now in top-down camera view, not the 3rd person camera (its still available in the settings)
- background objects have their color matched with asteroids and environmental lighting

FFA map Deathmatch

Fellow pilots!

In this version you no longer need to choose the number of people in the battle. This means that if the game is for 4-8 people it can start with 4 to 8 players without bots. If bots are on you can start with 1 player and they'll be added up to 4 participants.

Also, added FFA map Deathmatch for 4 to 8 people. Level 2 is required in FFA mode there is now a timer and the winner is the player with the most kills.


Other changes:
- removed the Yin-Yang map and replaced it with the New Horizons map - CTF 2 for 8-10 people with various interesting tricks, gates and clouds. Level 5 required
- slightly less brightness of the sun in high and maximum graphics settings
- the resurrection timer is locked to 5 seconds in dungeons and FFA games
- rockets in Multi-stage charge mode are rarely triggered by a machine gun or laser
- new command .online to see current game online status
- game settings have been changed and improved
- increased hit box geometry of the gate to avoid fast passage
- changed the tasks of the Drones Junkyard quest. Now you need to kill 30 small drones, 1 large one and find 1 drone part

Last versions gave us a lot of performance improvements and settings overhaul. Now game runs perfectly on devices alike GeForce 930 an Intel integrated graphics.

3rd Person camera, new Co-op dungeon, Control theme update

Fellow pilots!
Here goes one of the first improvements based on your feedbacks and suggestions.

First of all now arrow keys and ASWD behave differently. Arrows move the ship in their direction while ASWD is our usual control theme - acceleration and turns. You can switch the keys in settings.

Secondly we're announcing new game mode. Now you can play with 3rd Person camera! You will see the option when starting the game from Steam, or you can choose it in game settings.

Finally there is a new Co-op dungeon called The Slums. It's designed for 2-4 players and 15-20 minutes overall gameplay. Note that dungeon is still in development and have some minor issues.

Other changes Version 1.0.364 to 1.0.365:
- Sect dungeon moved to level 4
- fixed too long station docking process
- countdown timer changes to red when less than 1 minutes remains
- displaying map minimum and maximum player count in the list
- automatic resurrection for players when leaving the battleground
- better joystick support

Great news, everyone!

Despite all the obstacles and the fact that the game was made by a tiny Indie 5-people team, we are ready to announce Project Amalthea: Battlegrounds release on October 12, 8AM California Time!

We could tell a lot about our game and the long journey to the release but all we possess an irresistible desire to be honest and follow the best traditions of For-Gamers-By-Gamers communication style.

Attention! There will be a lot of text below and youre welcome to proceed only if you have the time and mood for it.




First of all, we want to confess that the release version is far from perfect both in technical terms and as for our original vision for this game. But rest assured that we are aimed to make the game better and better with your help and move on with your help.

Thats not only a question of minor bugs of typos and inconsistencies in the interface (which we will definitely fix!), but there is a huge list of ideas and features left behind such as more weapon types, cooperative tower defense mode, race mini-game and other features. We also had to put aside a dozen and a half level maps, several game classes, skill branches, hundreds of items, in-game crafting, etc. Although the most parts of the list are already implemented in one way or another, those were not included in the current version of the game for a number of reasons. In fact this list is our roadmap for the near future, and that is what we're definitely going to do with patches and updates.

That letter is not an awkward attempt to justify ourselves for possible bugs (they always will thrive!) and issues. We want you to know that well be extremely grateful for any kind of game feedback (positive or negative, it doesnt matter) because every opinion is of great value. We anticipate hearing back from you to understand whether our game is of interest and what should be done to improve it.


The second point - the release does not mean that were ceasing the development, of course not! Were looking forward to the next patches and updates and for you its a great opportunity to take part in shaping our project and its community. We are ready to make every effort needed for the further development of the project.

New Raid location

Location: Sect of Sun worshipers.
Little is known about Sect.

Matti Jrvinen - creator and spiritual leader, founded the Sect somewhere near Jupiter.
History is silent about where and how Matti recruits parishioners, but there are rumors that slavery is the basis of their flock.

The sectarians are not distinguished by friendliness and have been noticed more than once in sacrifices and other extremely dubious rituals.
In this regard, the NPC Corporation issued a perpetual DoA license.

Weekend changelog

0.4.319

Now we have two completely new modes of torpedo weapons: in normal mode, torpedoes fly at the target, sometimes they miss, the radius is small, and the damage is high. In Artillery mode (enabled by the top skill in the Torpedo tree), torpedoes fly past asteroids and hit the target accurately.

Other changes:
- added new icons for different types of armor and shields, reworked existing items
- the skill "Magnetic torpedo" is replaced by the skill "Artillery mode"
- in artillery mode, the ship cannot move, but receives a bonus to attack, and torpedoes ignore obstacles
- exit from the artillery mode is possible no earlier than the recharge of the skill ends - this is 60/45 and 30 seconds for different skill levels
- changed the visual effect of "Destabilizing Explosion"
- the skill "Humanitarian aid" restores less armor than a shield
- many internal changes to cancel existing effects
- other fixes and improvements

Changes:
- The talent "Debris search" is now passive. Once studied, the engineer can knock debris out of the asteroids in the future with this talent there will be a chance of getting some items when the enemy dies
- engineer can shoot asteroids and collect debris that are needed to build new asteroids
- building a new asteroid requires 3 pieces of debris and you need to stay in one place for 10 seconds and do not perform any other actions, cooldown of the skill is 60 seconds and they are counted from the start of the cast

In this version, significant changes have been made to the autoshot.
It should work always when the right mouse button is pressed (or left, depends from settings)

- fixed switching of ammunition types for machine guns, now it happens instantly, without interrupting shooting
- change of target or target death does not stop shooting
- - fixed an issue that caused special types machine guns of ammo to fire almost without delay

Monthly changelog

Hey pilots!
There was a lot of changes this month, some of them:

Graphics:
- taking damage damage now leads to shaking camera and red flashing at the edges of the screen
- indication of low HP, stuns, silence now with flashing at the edges of the screen
- additional anti-aliasing FXAA at High and Ultra lighting settings
- activated OpenGL 4.3 mode (including 4.5+) to speed up client loading
- significant changes in the display of the point of explosion of missiles
- changed animation of torpedoes and their trail
- a lot of changes in weapon effects (FX)
- various graphics improvements

Skills and Gameplay:
- added second rank to "Nanorobots" skill, which lasts 15 seconds instead of 10 and requires 11 talent points.
- "Full control" skill has been removed and moved to the "Repair" branch
- added one ot the top skills for Armor branch "Oil Cloud", aura that slows down all ships within a radius of 30 meters, and consumes 5 units of shield per second.
- skill "For wear" does not work if there are no machine guns overheated (you need at least one not overheated to work)
- reworked CTF 4x4 map, now there are passages from the Clone Station to the center of the map, closed by energie barrier that open from the inside. Opening is possible only during the battle and for 10 seconds
- added checks when buying a weapons, armor, ships, etc for presence of the necessary talents
- in the case of takeoff with a hull with missing talents, a slowdown debuff is applied
- changed the rules for the appearance of random items in trade at the station
- reduction of the effect of bonuses for long cooldown weapons starts from 2 seconds

Today we have two updates in a row. First of all we have new music from Jesse Gallagher and also all team members on CTF games now have distinctive blue and red marks!

Version 0.4.294:

- fixed bug with invisible missiles
- fixed GameObjectError when putting down the flag
- Flurry of Fire talent launches 4 missiles instead of 6
- changed and significantly accelerated the rendering of stars and the sun

  • PVP rank formula is now 1 + log10 (games) with rounding. That means you'll get Rank 1 (Legionary) after first battle, rank 2 (Duplicarius) after 10 battles and so on
  • players with the Duplicarius rank and above can enter the FFA battle
  • reduced radius of missile detonation by 20%
  • bots on the BG are added with 10 sec delay
  • the Redeemer machine gun is slightly weakened
  • additional check to avoid multiple death messages
  • Critical Shot talent of Sniper class consumes the entire shield, requires 100 shield points to activate and guaranteed to crit
  • Strobe talent in the Lasers tree requires a 15/30/45 shield depending on the rank

Steam Summer Game Festival

Fellow Project Amalthea followers!

We are delighted to inform you of our participation in the Steam Summer Game Festival. During the festival everyone is allowed to try the Demo version of our game called Project Amalthea: Battlegrounds.


Battlegrounds is a spin-off from our main project focused on arena fights - short team battles with other players. You start on Amalthea station on Jupiter orbit with a level 10 character and a ship packed with guns and modules.

There is a quarantine declared throughout the orbit so all the pilots are grounded except for the few ones allowed to participate in training battles.
Join their ranks, play different arena battles, upgrade your weapons and buy new ships! There are 50+ supporting quests, 12 skill trees, 16 game classes (only 9 of them are available in the Demo) and much more!

Project Amalthea Alpha 2 testing stage


Fellow Gamers and Space Fans!

After 18 months of development we're finally ready for massive test of our game, not just the local dev runs as we did before.

It was a long way from the raw idea to the marvelous game we have now, but we are still nowhere near the end. At this very moment, Project Amalthea is ready for action: we're testing massive PVP, cooperative runs, night-long battleground duels, obtaining own space property, hunting for trade deals and craft recipes.

Of course, there are problems, bugs, disbalances and planning failures. For example we failed to provide manned English translation for all the texts and messages - we simply underestimated the huge amounts of work needed to re-read and localize them all. And our skill tree implementation level is far below the acceptable 50% margin.

However, we are working hard on the project and hoping to make it ready for beta testing and wide auditory later this year.
