v1.1.1 - Monster Crown Update

Hello tamers,

A small update with some fixes today:

 • Raptyl's flight path has been corrected
 • Baby level up fix
 • Overworld monster layering fix
 • Missing hybrid for Shadrache, Machindra, added
 • Kyro not registering in the notebook from breeding fixed
 • Wiki link fixed
 • Box monster navigation alignment fix
 • Menu layering bug fixed
 • Backer monster "Bombril" added to the duchess's garden
 • Baby Apo OW sprite fix
 • Non water monsters navigating on water fixed
 • Undergrowth pass player layering bug fixed
 • Slightly faster loading
 • Creekeon palette fix

I still have not gotten my hands on a steam deck, however, I can confirm that if you're updated, it works on proton, and I confirmed this build on Ubuntu LTS this morning, which hopefully is helpful to steam deck owners as well.

I also added an indicator to the New Game button that makes it clearer how to start Mark's Quest, just press right on New Game (you'll now see Mark's face there too) to scroll through New Game, New Game+ and Mark's Quest.

Mark's Quest actually started as a New Game+ option where you started from Frobec, however, while working on it I thought it was a lot more fun to make a brand new Crown Island 4 years later - hope you agree :)

Thank you to user alivewater on discord for the tile error reports!

Have a good week everyone!

-Jason

RED KING DLC is out NOW! + TCG Preorder Store

[previewyoutube=rkWUWCVL8KA;full][/previewyoutube]

Deep in Flowering Province a new land has been discovered - Dino Land!

This discovery has lead to the findings of new, primordial beasts. Navigate the cliffs high above Undergrowth Pass to tame new beasts, including two mysterious fossils of monsters from even farther into the distant past of Crown Island. Find a legendary Bone Bow to add to your array of powers.

Baby Monsters now roam the wilds of Crown Island, be on the lookout for these rare appearances, and even breed your own! Use the Growth Stunter to keep your cute new pals around forever!

Head to dark back alleys of Nio Kio to find a dubious card supplier who can help you to obtain the dark beast Bant, the enigmatic ocean monster and more important monsters from Crown Island's history.

Other secrets await a daring player with a bow... be careful when monsters multiply - and double your caution when they combine!

---BUT YOU'RE NOT EVEN CLOSE TO DONE--

Return to a brand new Crown Island four years later as the up-and-coming tamer Mark, from Frobec!

Inspired by the hero he once adventured with, Mark will set out with his baby Stamlanche to blaze his own destiny. Explore how the provinces and towns of Crown Island have changed since the hero's victory, catch up with old friends, and repair the nation's new Island-wide Train network to usher in a new era of peace and cooperation, and help the wounds of war finally begin to heal.

Make use of new powers, enjoy a vibrant new world and meet new provincial forms of old favorites!

With this final content update, Monster Crown becomes "MONSTER CROWN: RED KING" - a subtitle that reflects its place as separate but equal in a wider mythos yet to be explored, and also cements the official name of the game's protagonist in the Monster Crown universe.

From everyone at Studio Aurum; thank you for coming on this journey with us. We hope you'll stay with us as we dive even deeper into the world of Monster Crown in future!

DLC Development is complete + Some Very interesting announcements!

Hi everyone,

Development of the long-awaited DLC is finally complete. There will be an announcement for the release date shortly, as well as images and teasers for the many new monsters and cool things included. I say DLC these days so casually I take for granted that it may not be clear, so just to be 100% clear, it's just a game update with a lot of new content, and is entirely free.

I wanted to share an announcement from our twitter today, which reiterates the above and gives a little update on the sequel project the rest of the Studio Aurum team is focused on:

===

Development of Monster Crown's DLC has completed and is in final testing. A release date will be announced soon to bring the final chapter of Monster Crown to players worldwide. This update will be brought to all platforms including some additional fixes and fun.

Another exciting development, the Monster Crown Official TCG will be sent to the printers on November 25th, bringing another project I'm honored to be involved in to life, featuring the world and monsters and characters you've all gotten to know over the past 2 years.

As our journey on Crown Island nears its close, many of you have been asking about the mysterious, in-development sequel, Monster Crown 2.

Monster Crown 2 (Project NEXT) has been in full scale development for 6 months now, featuring a dedicated team, each excelling in their craft and area of expertise - the builds I've been playing with are nothing short of breathtaking and clearly show Monster Crown in a whole new dimension of quality.

While the first screenshots will not be shared until the new year, please consider this our announcement of the project, and enjoy the teaser image created by the game's director, and my collaborative visionary on the project.

I'll be taking a step back from hands-on development and art, serving as this project?s producer, but Project NEXT is a studio-wide effort and I can promise you that this team will take Monster Crown to newer heights and satisfy your monster taming thirst in ways you've never seen before.

Thank you for two years of Monster Crown!!

===

I want to thank all of you for ensuring we had the resources and interest to have these totally separate threads (the sequel and the TCG) running in parallel to my focus on fixes and the DLC. the Monster Crown Series is about to get a whole lot bigger, and I'm absolutely delighted to bring this final "content pack" update to the game, some of you may remember the Content Packs back during Early Access, this experience gave me similar feelings, and was honestly nostalgic for me in that way.

My health has had plenty of ups and downs since then, and I wouldn't personally feel right serving as director on the next project with how intermittent I can be, that being said, I still keep a close eye on our projects and contribute plenty of ideas, lending a hand here and there to get things across the line.

I also wanted to thank the person on the last post who turned me onto Heavy Metal Poisoning, a very thoughtful and caring suggestion and while that's not what i have, just to rule it out, I followed the protocol and am so sick of broccoli now I would gladly sign up for a spicy glutovi steak :D

Stay tuned for the DLC feature post and release date coming up in the next couple of weeks!

See you soon tamers.

Update v1.0.54

Hello tamers!

Today we're launching v1.0.54, which brings a number of fixes and adjustments to the table. This is the last sizeable update before our upcoming DLC! I'm very happy to share some fixes, code tune ups,and a few goodies before I dive into finishing up the DLC.

For Xbox One and PS4 players, if you're reading this, please don't worry, the fixes for your trophies and a few other items are prepared and tested, we're moving these through the review, submission and approval process as quickly as we can and hope to have them available very soon.

Changelog:

 • Monster Boxes have been hugely increased, you can now have 96 monsters per box and on-screen at once for better monster management! The old limit was 16. I've also added the ability to name your monster boxes for ease of use. This was a much requested feature and I'm very happy it's here!

 • To unify the selection of Monster Powers and Overworld Ability, there's a new option. As soon as you open the menu you can easily select which ability is mapped to the ability button.

 • Remember the shopkeeper's monster? that orange and blue coconut-crab looking monster? Expert tamers might recognize it from its deep sea ancestor as well. Well, if you spend a large chunk of change at The Barge you migth just find yourself with one to call your own.

 • Malloom forms added

 • Plumo palette adjustment

 • The battle system has had a back-end code revamp to make things smoother, more reliable, and clear during the flow of battle.

 • NPC sprite depth has had a revamp, for a smoother visual experience as you navigate the game's towns.

 • The jump animation and timing have been adjusted to look a lot more appropriate and feel more natural.

---

I hope you enjoy the changes and goodies, a lot more is on the way. New monsters, new areas, new abilities, new music and a lot of fun are on the way in our upcoming DLC, including some fossil monsters! Get a glimpse into the prehistoric land of Monster Crown. As promised, this expansion will be completely free.

Thank you!

UPDATE 1.0.5 - New Monsters!

Hello tamers! Its me, devotedtoneurosis!

Today we launch version 1.0.5 of Monster Crown across Switch, PC, Linux and Mac. Its been too long since Ive seen you, and been too long since we had an update! Heres what you can expect in todays update:

 • Increased performance
 • Fixed crashing issues
 • Fixed loading issues on overworld
 • Updated sprites
 • Added 2 new monsters!!
 • Storklift feather (warp back to a safe location)

Best of luck finding these two new monsters! One can be found in Scarred Province, and another is out at sea waiting to find you.

Weve had plenty of questions about our DLC plans, youll learn a little below about why the wait has been so long, but our plans to release DLC for Monster Crown in the near future remains the same. The DLC is sitting at about one third complete. Instead of releasing as three separate small packs, it will launch as one final Content Pack update, which might remind you of our schedule during Early Access. To be 100% clear, this is totally free DLC and will come in the form of an update for everyone.
The Future of the Series
By now word may have reached you that Monster Crown 2 (code name Project NEXT) is in early production. I have identified a group of very skilled individuals, most of whom began as fans of Monster Crown or contributed to the first game. There will be a new director for that project, and of course, most importantly, a skilled programmer to re-establish much of what I built, along with a much more clear vision from day one and a cohesive artstyle. Were not ready to share anything else at this point, but more will be shared in the future on this project. Its very exciting and already looks awesome.

Secondly, there will soon be a Monster Crown TCG! It looks amazing, and you can learn more about it here:

[previewyoutube=yxZIWDS2Tog;leftthumb][/previewyoutube]

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/808562247/monster-crown-trading-card-game
The game is already fully funded and a success on Kickstarter - thank you so much to all of you that contributed to this exciting new project.

While referenced above, I want to make it clear that the MC2 and MCTCG projects are not a focus for me at this time. While I oversee the design, choices, and help from a production/planning perspective, all of these future projects are being built and actioned by others, trusted partners who understand Monster Crown to its core and I couldnt be prouder of what theyve already built. The only Monster Crown work I do at this point is work on this game.

Work on this patch, especially bringing it to consoles, has been significant due to a few technical complications, as well as my health.
What Ive been up to
As most of you know, I was struck with an illness in 2019. While the cause and continuation of this chronic illness is unknown to me and my doctors, I have managed to create my own medical regime to mitigate its effects as much as possible. I love Super Mario World, I have played it since I was 4 years old when my parents bought me a Super Nintendo, I even speedran it years ago and while I didnt break any world records, I would come within 40 seconds of the world records for glitchless any%. This may seem like an unrelated tangent but when I became sick I could no longer jump over the first pit in the first level. My eyes would not focus, my thumbs could not coordinate with my brain. I was very, deeply sick, would regularly collapse, had to leave my job and would sleep for 16 hours, waking up even more tired than when I went to sleep. I even had significant bouts of amnesia that would leave me confused when even talking about the past day with my family. As you can imagine, my life was in complete shambles, but Monster Crown continued.

With bouts of illness, I still am very proud to say that I was able to complete Monster Crown through random periods where a new medication would give me a month or so of near-normalcy, before sliding back to complete dysfunction.

But did Monster Crown reach completion in a way Im proud of?

Somewhere in the fog of it I lost the ability to properly assess the game, I would play and not experience bugs or glitches that others would report, release day was not a proud day for me, instead, it was wrought with confusion. Regardless, I got to work and pushed out patches to fix major issues, and then the medium ones. To this day minor bugs exist throughout the game that result from areas of the code that, if changed, would require rigorous testing of every area, and every feature. One example is wild encounters/monsters that overlap sections of graphics visually that they should not, this is due to a flaw in the world/collision system that is not easily altered.

Over the past year Ive had major health struggles, but more importantly, Ive done deep study of neuroscience, energy systems in the body, pharmacology, and developed a medical routine that lets me think and exist in a way that I have not in years. This was not a light undertaking, but each new medication or routine I found would open up a little more energy and mental power to find the next key in the chain. Ill never be healthy (although the well funded research into things like long-covid may bring surprises in the future), but Ive managed to reach a fairly normal state of mental function and my life feels truly changed because of it. Im immediately appreciative (and emotional) that I can say this.

Recently Ive been making my way back into the discord and fan conversations, its very good to be communicating with you all again and its something Ill continue to enjoy.
The Future of this Game
Thanks to the incredible folks that have joined me, the future of Monster Crown is amazingly bright and the future of the series is being built as we speak. But as for me specifically, I plan to stay on Crown Island, this is the world I built and Im not done with it.

Today we bring two new Monsters to Crown Island, and a much needed boost of performance and functionality to the Nintendo Switch. Next Ill be bringing this patch to the Xbox One and PS4 players. As soon as thats wrapped up Ill be circling back to complete the DLC and bring it to all players.

Beyond that point, Im going to see what I can do to the existing systems of Monster Crown to bring improvements. How that manifests will be a conversation all of you are part of. Some limitations we have of course are mentioned above, the layering system only affects some visual aspects but to totally revamp it could bring considerable need for testing or re-rigging of large parts of the game. Ill be staying tuned to your notes, and identifying aspects for improvements that are possible and dont require expensive translations to add to make your experience brighter, and easier to enjoy.

And of course all of these aspects have been a big topic of conversation between me and the development team of Monster Crown 2, who will ensure we have a very strong base there that doesnt have these issues.

Thank you so much for playing Monster Crown, being part of our communities, and all of your messages expressing what you love about Monster Crown, from monsters, to lore, to the freedom the game offers. I know there is so much love, such devoted fans, and what everyone really wants is to be able to enjoy the parts they love easier and more fully, and thats our north star.

Thank you

This past week we at SOEDESCO have been to Gamescom 2022!

Bit of a different update this time not about the game but about us at SOEDESCO.

This year we were only in the B2B area of the event, but we were still able to show our games to other developers and industry insiders. The business area is still important for the press, influencers, and other media to check out our company!

Next year we hope to bring Soedesco to the customer-facing side of Gamescom as well

Here are some of the photos from the event:

Update 1.0.5 - Invisible Walls fix, More efficient spawns, Higher encounter rate

Hey guys!

Man I've been trying to get this update out all week, but my day job has been in crunch, tying me up pretty completely.

There was an oversight last patch, leading to invisible wall issues as well as low encounter spawns. Those are now fixed, with more efficient spawns memory/CPU-wise as well!

Have a good one tamers, apologies for the delay and rest assured - DLC1 is still in the works.

Groundwork Update

Hello tamers!

It seems like it's been quite a while indeed since we last spoke - over the past few months I've had a lot of things in life come and smack me in the face but never was Monster Crown far from my mind. On top of that, there are two others working diligently on awesome new Monster Crown projects which will be revealed later in this post.

This initial update lays the groundwork for our DLC content. The entire world loading code has been rebuilt, leading to far higher performance and less lag as exploring the huge world. This update will shortly make its way to consoles as well, where it will make an even bigger impact. Additionally, we'll no longer have those weird savefiles showing up for Steam Deck users or with cloud saves. This update will remain in the beta branch for 48 hours (right-cllick, properties, select branch, "ea-beta" if you'd like to opt in) just because it's been a while since I pushed out a new patch and I want to make sure nothing unexpected pops up.

I will be devoting all my free time (which I honestly wish wasn't quite as scarce as it is) to continued work on Monster Crown, as I've got big plans for the future and Monster Crown remains as important in my heart as it ever has. More monsters, areas and content are still on the way and I apologize for the delay these past few months, I put a number of things in life on the back burner during that last two years of development, and some of that came crashing down on me this year but all is well now and there's no need to worry.

I'm very excited to announce two very cool partnerships that are going to truly expand Monster Crown for all of you. While I remain focused on the game, these two talented dudes are going to be creating a way to experience Monster Crown in a whole new dimension, expanding on the lore, world and scenarios that you already know and love, while also building things in interesting and alternate new directions.

Allow me to introduce, two very exciting new projects...

---
MONSTER CROWN the Comic
WE ARE NOT KINGS. WE WILL BE... MESSIAHS!

Humans and monsters coexist on the island nation of Crown Island. The best and bravest of mankind go out to tame these creatures for all sorts of reasons, from biological study, to hunting and even high-value package delivery. Monster Tamers are the most valuable people in society, and their bravery and deeds earn them renown and respect.

Alex Duke Sawyer is just an average boy who works on his parents farm, until one day he wins a monster of his own in a prize draw. With the gargoyle dragon Dracoyle by his side, Alex sets off to see the country he knows so little about, and become a Monster Tamer himself.

What Alex doesn't know, however, is that dark forces move behind the scenes to revive the dreaded Philosopher Kings, three otherworldly demigods who ruled over Crown Island with an iron fist. Their rule was absolute, until it was overthrown by a rebellion lead by Alex's own father many years ago.

Alex journeys out into the world, but the world is a lot harsher and more violent than he could ever anticipate, and he's flung headfirst into a terrible conflict that will plumb the deepest, darkest secrets of Crown Island and its history.

Get MONSTER CROWN: THE COMIC on Itch.io, Amazon and Gumroad on 6.6.2022!

---
MONSTER CROWN the Trading Card Game
Play through an RPG inspired experience where you and your opponent build a world, fill it with monsters, and do your best to topple each other with teams caught along the way, and find out who deserves to wear the Monster Crown!

---

As you can see, it's shaping up to be a very exciting 2022 for Monster Crown!

Seeing these versions of the game and world I worked on and obsessed over for five years is a dream come true, and one I absolutely could've never anticipated. A huge shoutout to Ahab, the Manga/Comic's creator and Spudmay, the TCG's skilled sculpter/creator. Each so ridiculously creative, so geared to make the highest quality projects they can, I'm in constant awe over the awesome stuff they share with me on discord each week - sorry guys, I guess only I have the VIP access right now XD

Happy taming tamers, hope you're having a great month and year and expect more details about the content-filled DLC soon!

Patch 1.0.44

Hello tamers!

Hope you are all enjoying what the new year has in store. As you might've heard this week, we've got confirmation on our release date for the Xbox One and PS4 versions and it's February 22nd! I'm very excited about that. Preparing for those consoles has eaten a bit of my time lately but I wanted to get out a patch to clean up a few things, and here it is, 1.0.44:

1.0.44
======
+Wild Tamer level scaling issue fixed
+Potential menu issue with name combining if using monsters with one-letter names as the primary and secondary
+Issue affecting NPCs appearances in certain cutscenes fixed
+Raptor mountain visual update
+A few little flag issues that could affect post-game raptor-flute quest fixed
+Aber scene show girls received updated sprites
+Critical vine animation issue fixed
+Two in-battle lines weren't translated correctly into other languages
+Move learning popup had an off-by-one error preventing you from seeing new moves properly the level they became available
DLC Development
The development of DLC1 is still underway and going well. It will bring a variety of new monsters, a new cliff area that began as a small section to find a new monster, but has grown into basically half of a new province! It comes with brand new monsters, a couple of fun challenges and a new music track as well. Some data-miners have already uncovered the names of some of these monsters (and soon-to-be available domesticated monsters you already know), but thankfully their appearance is still a secret, which is the coolest part :D

There will also be a new shop that offers some hard-to-find items, and the Monster Body Parts will have their role revealed at long last - don't worry if you lost yours, there'll be a way to obtain new ones. Additionally there will be new moves, Chief rematches and a special new machine in Hewston that offers a new spin on monster colors, which of course means you'll have new colors and combinations for all your existing favorites.

So with February being focused on the XB1 and PS4 releases you'll see an announcement for DLC1 for all platforms shortly after, I plan to create a video to showcase some of it and maybe I'll tease a bit of what is planned for DLC2 and 3 later this year as well.

Have a good Wednesday night tamers, and thank you for all your support!

New Year's First Patch - 1.0.43

Hello everyone it's 2022! So good to see you all again.

I've been working on this patch since before the holidays but they have a funny way of derailing plans right? :D

I've been combing our bug-tracker, and tweaking random things people @'d me on twitter about, and it's lead to a lot of small fixes and improvements that really make the game more fun to play without less elements taking you out of the experience.

But there's some cool feature/QoL adjustments/additions that add to the game as well!
Moveset Customization Menu
As you likely already know, there is a move learner/forgetter in Frobec. When I began development I had a goal of minimalism and fast battles - get in and out quick, as I read that was something a lot of people desired in the genre, however, the game's complexity has grown significantly since then and it's not always clear to players that a new move is available as they level up their monsters.

For that reason, whenever a new move is available (through using Ultra-Rare Berries, Scouting, or Battling) you'll be offered the ability to jump into the Move learner/forgetter on the spot and pick the moveset you want going forward. This should make the earlier part of the game before you reach Frobec a bit more clear and simply be much more convenient overall for everyone.
Monster Riding
Instead of "sitting" on the heads or backs of monsters, your character will now straddle/grip them. This allowed me to add a significant number of monsters to the rideable list, as they no longer need a large sittable part of their body. This has doubled the amount of monsters you can now ride around and smash up over-world random encounters with. Here's the list of new ones:

-Walerus
-Yetowl
-Darwhol
-Rivardien
-Gorgem
-Glossum
-Shagrun
-Griffin
-Vulter
-Tanukrook
-Frigidile
-Gridag
-Stallune
-Aliferz
-Questabock
-Hymeraden
-Migma
-Syleendra
-Panipillr
-Oukochou
-Deuvul
-Putridevil
-Vult
-Tombus
-Glacial
-Alfric
-Salilisk
-Tarasque
-Gyn
-Cangon
-Tigon
Visual Improvements
Several monsters have received overworld sprite touchups to give them a bit more character or clean up lacking ones:

Additionally Windy Province, Mill Town, Crossroads Town, Scarred Province, Humanism and Empathy Kingdom have received tile updates and visual improvements to their color schemes. I think you'll have a lot more fun wandering around and seeing the adjustments.
Next Steps
The first of three free significant DLCs coming this year is being actively worked on and will soon be complete. It offers a slew of new monsters and fun sidequests, some of which are teased in this twitter 2022 message I posted a few days ago.

I've also been hard at work on the Xbox One and PS4 launches, which will have their release dates announced in the very near future.

There will soon be another monster design contest, for a chance to get a monster you designed in Monster Crown as part of a significant QoL addition in an upcoming DLC, expect more details on that soon!
Other fixes
Here's a non-comprehensive list of other fixes, as the total list of small tweaks I made based on people just quickly asking for an adjustment these past two months are a bit much to list:

1.0.43
======
+Lost province cave transition adjustment
+Newly cropped up camera issue due to UI resizing during the synergy tutorial and being kidnapped fixed
+Shop menu UI fix that was cutting off some item descriptions
+Wardrobe centering issue
+Found items on-screen display adjusted to be more readable, longer.
+Random encounter frequency increased
+Final quest log entry gets a "check" properly in the post-game to be a bit less confusing

Patch 1.0.42

Hey guys,

Happy weekend, it's time for our next Monster Crown patch!

One drawback of the randomizer was that if you encountered a monster that needed a demon pact early, you still had to wait until post-game to be able to tame it. This has been adjusted so now while playing with randomizer on, the demon pact check is ignored.

Those of you that are frequent discord visitors already have heard a few whispers about this, but now that all significant issues have been addressed work has begun on our first DLC, this will be the first of three completely free DLC packs coming in the new year, each one more significant in size and content than the last. Some things to look forward to our in our first pack is:

 • Getting your hands on previously inaccessible monsters, including domesticated ones
 • Several new items (including those to boost base stats)
 • Several new attacks
 • Many new surprises - one of which for sure will throw you for a loop.

Here are the full patch notes:

1.0.42
======
+Randomizer now bypasses demon pact requirements
+Random encounter rate increased
+Wilds performance improvements
+Post game hospital scene adjustments
+Crowned Monster graphical fixes
+Monster hatch sound effect adjustments
+Various small overworld tile issues fixed
+Staglus forest scene fix

Monster Modding Upgrade! (1.0.392)

Hey guys,

Just a quick update today, a few small bugfixes and adjustments are in this update but the main addition is an upgrade to Monster Modding.

Wow I couldn't believe how many talented artists jumped on our monster modding update. These players created real, full monsters with the custom crossbreeding mechanics you already know and gave them a fresh, totally new sprite. They've been adding them to our pedigree gallery as well, so anyone can grab them using a pedigree code (as long as you turn modding on).

Visit Gallery

I had to drop everything and add full crossbreed support for all these excellent artists!

If you're already a modder or would like to dive in yourself, grab this image and edit it in your favorite image editor to a design you like. The Red means the lighter color of the palette goes there, the Blue means the darker

credit to Ahab's Artwork for this sweet alternate Dracoyle sprite, which is available on the gallery as well.

Once you've created the sprite, you can use this site to set a new base monster sprite OR, with today's update, add a whole crossbreed family! One for each type of crossbreed to make your monsters feel more authentic than ever :)

Jump to Sprite Mod Tool Here

MASSIVE thanks to Modulo on discord for sprucing up the tool and helping me to add this functionality. Without him this would've taken much longer, and probably still not have looked as nice :)

Once you've received the code, copy it and go back to Monster Crown, on the party screen hit F11 and you're cooking, just like Sunday's update.

Thank you so much for all of your passion and creativity this week, I'm in awe, but it's something you guys have made a common thing for me.

Regular patch coming this weekend.

Update 1.0.39

Happy Weekend Tamers!

This week's update brings some really cool stuff to the game, Randomizers, Mods, and a brand new monster!
Brand new monster - King's Primigon
Have you noticed the King and Merryl have these cool horned Primigon? They're a different color too! The King needed a hardier breed to escort his carriage through the dangerous Scarred and Desperado province and so had this new type of Primigon created that is stronger, faster and tougher. Tamers on Discord have even dubbed it "Primigon 2", and to be honest, stat wise it is better in every way!

Get your hands on a King's Primigon using the code KINGPRIM in the barn. This was a much requested monster for fans, much to my surprise, and while I was tempted to modify Primigon's sprite to add horns I didn't think that was gonna cut it for a sharp-eyed tamer such as yourself, so not only does King's Primigon have a totally new sprite and coloring for your breeding projects, but each of its crossbreeds puts a brand new spin on Primigon's equivalents, totally new polished sprites that build on those designs you already know in a big way!

Oh, I also gave it a brand new move, Cruel Push after many people asked for more moves to punish status conditions, Cruel Push does 3x damage to dizzy foes!
Randomizer Options
You'll now find another menu category - Fun - that contains options for modding and randomization:

Random Starter: This option causes the starter you select to be randomized immediately after you select it from all base monsters, giving you a true surprise to start the game with.

Randomize Types: All monsters will receive a new random typing

Randomize Colors: All monsters will receive a new random palette

Randomizer: All wild monsters, bosses, and tamer monsters will be shuffled randomly, providing new monster options everywhere you look!

Check out my starter and what I found just outside the farm!

All of these random options rely on an RNG "Seed", some of you may be familiar with that from other games, but basically if the randomizer creates orange Rodask in Dew Cave, next time you load your file it'll keep making orange Rodasks in Dew Cave, however, you can "re-roll" the seed by turning Randomizer Off then back On. These values are saved to your file so finding a value you like for each of your different files is fine.

It's in the spirit of randomizers to not mess with this value and just play with your initial seed, but I ain't your mom :D, go nuts! all the tools are here for you to use however is fun for you.
Mods
This update also brings our first modding tool, inject a monster sprite! Start off by opening the Fun menu and turning on Mods. Next up grab the template here:

https://i.imgur.com/QgbtgXZ.png

Open that image in your image editor of choice (I enjoy Paint .net for color replacement/transparency after I design them in MSPaint) and replace it with your new custom monster. Monsters in Monster Crown only have two colors, so where you want the lighter color to go replace with Red, and where you want the darker use this blue. It's important that you sample the colors in this image and don't use some other red or blue.

Once you're happy with the sprite, you can visit the script I created here:

http://bulletcpu.com/crowns/PNGto5bit.html

And upload the image. It'll convert it into a code. you'll notice this code is mostly 0s but there are numbers 1-4 in there as well. If you get a code with only 0s just upload it again with the browse button and it'll make the code properly. Copy this code!

Back on your party screen, hover over the monster with the sprite you'd like to replace and hit F11! It'll inject the monster sprite into the game, that's it! All done! And best of all? If your friend also has mods turned on you can even trade and battle, the game will communicate the sprite data without the need for a mutual mod file or anything, between you and other modders these can be used like any other monster.

Here's a Chuk with a custom sprite I created, I called it Yuto! I guess it's our first quasi-canon monster.

Want to get yourself one? Well there's a playground rumor that if you trade and enter a tamer id of 999999 (six nines) you'll trade with a phantom tamer and receive your very own Yuto-chuk.

One thing to keep in mind is that if you breed these monsters, they produce Tardigen. If this feature is well loved maybe we'll add the ability to insert a whole crossbreed family in the future.

Due to the new monster mods, our pedigree gallery (which has had so many awesome entries and is definitely worth checking out) will be changed from free-for-all to needing approval when entries are submitted. There's no high bar for this, I just want to be sure no copyrighted material is submitted for other players to download. I'll be approving all new entries every day or two.

Patch 1.0.37

Hey guys,

After the recent total UI overhaul a few things had to be cleaned up/tweaked, thank you so much to all of you that helped me identify these. Switch users are also now able to use the new UI as well.

Embryo sprites that were missing are now back. Additionally the box system had a few tweaks for greater reliability, and now when you exit it in the fusion or breeding menu you'll be back at fusion/breeding, not booted back to the room.

The big functional change this update is I've gone through and reviewed all the flags and triggers of every chief and tweaked a few things, I've also tested this thoroughly and now all chiefs can be completed in whatever order you wish, they all give their prize monsters and all increase your certification level. If there's just one or two chiefs you haven't beaten you can try to take them on now, however, if you had bigger chief issues in the past you can do the following to reset all your chief flags and let you take them all on:

1. Open the settings menu
2. Press all four directional buttons (Up, Left, Right, Down)
3. This will set all chiefs to undefeated

I'm also considering returning to each Chief and giving them a super buffed up post-game team, is that something you'd have fun taking on?

For those of you that haven't yet pinned down the Enigma Beast out on the ocean, one of the monsters it can give you in an egg can now be obtained at the Wetland Province tamer camp. You'll meet a troubled young boy there that has a story to tell

Also, here are some more sprite touchups:
What's next?
While work on more content is going well, it will take some time because I want it to be a ton of fun, a lot of great content and I want it to be smooth and stable. I will make sure of that before I launch anything on that front.

That being said one type of content that can always be added without introducing bugs is new monsters, and to a similar degree new moves.

But even sooner than that we'll be launching our first of the modding tools in the next two weeks, the ability to mod in custom monsters you've drawn yourself! And if the other player has modding turned on they'll be able to see your custom monsters in battle too and even trade them. These modding tools will be PC only.

Here are the full patch notes, have a great week!

1.0.37
======
+Jack now directs you to the proper town for Leona
+Can no longer use transfomative items on embryos (caused issues)
+Issue preventing embryo sprites from appearing fixed
+Camera issues in two houses in Hewston fixed
+Tamer card graphic positioning fixed
+Box improvements, including backing out of it just bringing you back to the breeding/fusion menu
+Chief flag overhaul

Patch 1.0.35

Hello tamers!,

One often-requested feature was the ability to set Breeding and Fusion monsters from the box system. This offers better ease-of-use, a simpler UI experience, and combined with the new box interface it makes your breeding goals easier than ever. Also, the box in general has been sped up a little.

This is just a very small tweak but I found a way to adjust screen colors to be a little more retro-authentic and vibrant, it can be hard to notice if you didn't already play in the past day or so (or maybe it is and you just have better color perception than me!) But it's a nice little improvement.

Slumbear has been added to the Woods where you rescued Dad, and Hymeraden is now tameable! If you missed him first go-around, you can now find him in the inner sanctum as well, but his spawn is fairly rare. This monster was a fan design by Zai Wolfgang, he's one of our oldest super fans and I'm so glad he got to contribute to the game... I heard a rumor there's another similar contest on the horizon ;)

I also have begun adjusting some of the weaker sprites in the game. I compiled a full list of sprites I'll be touching up, 28 in total (so don't worry about any major revamps to your favorites) and the first two I finished up this morning. One is just some tweaks to look a bit more complete and interesting, the other is a fairly significant redesign because the old one looked very amateur to me.

There is a lot of WILD stuff in the works, and a lot more cool things in the way that are bigger in scope than these patches :)

1.0.35
======
+Dragon Cliff Cave to Shagrun fixed
+Colors slightly adjusted to be a bit more retro authentic
+micro gap occasionally seen in the world/tiles fixed
+Brilliants causing both monsters to appear as brilliant in NPC trades fixed
+Brute Ambigu, Unstable Pursuit sprite redesign/touchups
+Can now set breeding/fusion monsters from the farm box
+Slumbear added to Wayward Woods
+Hymeraden now tameable and added to the inner sanctum for anyone that missed it
+Jack now directs you to the proper town for Leona
+Rodask loading screen no longer hitches on loading steps

Update v1.0.33

Hello Tamers,

This update is a substantial one! I've been listening to all the feedback and reviews and studying the look of the game a lot myself and I sat down and got to work last Friday night and have barely stopped since, but it's been super worth it!

Screen Resolution

Probably the first thing you'll notice is the resolution change in game, the width and height of the camera has been increased by a little over two tiles each. While this can seem like a small change it actually makes quite a difference, especially on larger displays. You can see more of the game world and the detail level on large displays is just so much of a better fit. It also means you see more of the pixel art at the "distance" it should be.

UI Overhaul

All over the game you'll notice the new increase in resolution has not gone to waste! But before we get into that, the main menu usability has been worked on quite significantly. When you open the main overworld menu you'll notice it's now a bar over on the left, and it automatically opens the party screen. You'll be able to scroll up and down to select menu options faster, enter and leave the submenus and responsiveness has been increased here.

Shop and Inventory Screens

The Shop and Inventory screens have been revamped to show more items in a more modern looking interface. You'll be able to see all items available in the shop in an instant and my hope is that this will bring more attention to Ultra Rare Berries, a quick super-level-up method that many aren't aware of!

Farm Box

The Farm Box screen has been changed to show your party at all times, as well as showing all stat and move info of your monster as you scroll over them, reducing the need to enter a subscreen to check them out in full detail. This makes it easier to use the box and there's even some more screen real-estate on bottom to spare. This will be used for some sorting or quick use features in the future, to make the box system even easier to use and find your favorite monsters.

Finding Items

From now on when you get items rather than an intrusive box displaying on screen that slows you down, an item queue will appear seamlessly to the left of the screen showing the items you recently found. It's faster, seamless, and still easy to recognize what you just received!

Stat Buff/Debuff Feed

You'll notice that now when a monster receives a buff of debuff it scolls across the bottom of the screen. It's there longer, so you can read it without missing it with the old side-of-monster display, and it doesn't interrupt your flow. In time I imagine we'll get rid of the old display entirely.

These changes, combined with the rebalancing and the gradual day-night cycle makes for a much better gameplay experience than was available on release day. I will continue this work and improvements and soon, I'll be working on additional content as well.

Update v1.0.3

Hey Tamers, happy Wednesday.

after the last update a number of people expressed displeasure at the new stat and orb-use caps. I saw all sorts of messages about this, and about how they felt, even though it won't matter and no one is listening.

I don't want to hear that! If you have an opinion, send it to me, post it here, whatever you want, of COURSE I want to hear your thoughts and positions and wherever possible I will add more options for players to enjoy Monster Crown how THEY choose to.

Not every piece of feedback can be actioned, I'm one dude, and sometimes suggestions involve a lot more work than they might seem to at first thought - but none of that changes the fact that this community is for you, and I am always interested in hearing how you feel or what suggestions you have.

On another topic, Syleendra will no longer stalk you to the ends of the earth, it was only meant to do this if you held a lit lamp! I saw it stalking a few new players - sorry about that!

Monsters Thallox and Mathen (right) are now available in the wild. A glitch had prevented both from appearing but they're now fully available. I explain where you can find Thallox below, but I'll leave Mathen a mystery for now, feel free to read its lore for a hint!

One last thing, after I saw someone suggest it I changed the day-night cycle to a more gradual one. I'll make it even smoother in the future once I'm certain there's no performance impact - there's a colorset for morning, day, evening and night, and this new solution blends them as you move through the day, it's a little more resource intensive but shouldn't be a big deal, just want to give it a little time.

This version will be heading to Nintendo Switch next!

1.0.3
======
+Skill uncap option added (Check your settings)
+No longer enter a weird state when Raptor-flying while surfing
+Syleendra bug fixed
+Can no longer use Monster Moniker early, added UI indicator for it and it's now easy to remove using the wardrobe
+Thallox added to Greed's castle
+Mathen now available, the way she was always meant to be!
+More gradual day/night cycle, might become even more gradual and slow if no one has any performance issues with it
+Party scrolling now loops around (good suggestion I received on Reddit!)

Have a great night tamers!

Update 1.0.28

Hi Tamers,

Work has continued on Monster Crown all through the weekend, where I worked cooperatively with discord users to analyze and improve the balancing of the game. Balancing is something we'll always be fine-tuning but you're really gonna enjoy these changes, which I think are really instrumental to the fun-level of Monster Crown!
Rebalancing
To start with, move attack power levels have been rebalanced, this seriously reduces the OHKO/Sweeper effect and the power of simply focusing on your attack power. You'll definitely feel the need to make use of more varied teams, status effects, and strategies to take down foes. The stat on each individual move has not changed, however, the damage calculation has.

Enemies in Desperado, Scarred Province, Wetland Province, Flowering Province and Frost Province now scale with your tamer level, so increasing your tamer level now raises the challenge, and chiefs are stronger as well. Additionally, chiefs now appear on the map with a shield icon, so you can easily see these important foes

Stat orbs are now capped, only allowing you to boost your Monster's stat by 30% above the natural growth rate. This remains a viable strategy for those who dislike breeding, without letting you make totally unfair creatures using these eventually-common items.

Upon breeding, fusion, etc. a new base stat total limiter is applied. The limit is calculated as follows: 3.0 base in every stat (HP,Atk,Def,Mag,Res,GR). So therefore the most well rounded, evenly distributed monster would have a stat total of: 18.0. Your newly created monsters can only overcome the 3.0 limit by SPECIALIZATION! Keep in mind that the highest growth rate is like 1.4, so that frees up more points for other stats.

If your monster exceeds the 18.0 limit, it will be scaled down. Internally this is done by reverse-isotope therapy but you don't really need to know this because it's all done in code in an instant but I thought you monster scientists would value that info. You may exceed the 3.0 stat limit of course by say, decreasing speed, freeing up more points for Attack power, etc. You get the idea.

All of these rebalancing changes have personally made the game a LOT more fun for me in a way that I can't really put into words, and couldn't feel I was missing before. Somehow everything is just more fun and with the scaling, the monsters available to you immediately after Dew Cave just multiplied! I ran straight to Wetland province and grabbed myself a Boarnox, shortly after breeding it with a Bileat to make this tough guy before I ever visited Dania. It's a blast taking on the new, tougher wild encounters and wild tamers as well!
Performance Improvements
Recently I've optimized the world-loading code for Switch, and in doing so benefits come to steam as well, the game takes up much less storage space on your hard drive now and RAM usage is at approximately half.

Here's the full patch notes:

1.0.28
======
+Random Tamers now fade out after defeat
+Crossroad cutscene tweaks/polish
+Rodney (Frobec Chief) no longer re-fightable
+Additional sound effects added to various menus for a more responsive feeling
+RAM usage reduced to about half (a little less than half)
+Open world level rebalancing
+Random encounters have a slightly lower chance of being ones that chase you
+Charity Chief given a new team
+Chiefs now have identifiable shields above them on the overworld for easy identification
+Monster ability icons now show descriptions for greater clarity
+Improved Net Egg functionality (easier to grab a new egg)
+Issue with wild eggs fixed
+Random encounters can now be having a snack of berry or meat
+BULLDOZER MODE (you can now decimate enemies like scouting while riding your monster, it's kinda too much fun tbh)
+Attack animations sizing adjusted
+Issue affecting box operations in the fusion menu fixed
+Can now ride Epheal FB

Whew I used up so much space on the rebalancing info that I don't want to make this too long, if I can say one last thing try out Bulldozer mode while riding your monsters now it's too much fun!

Patch 1.0.26

Hey Tamers, happy Monday (I know, you can't make a Monday sound like a good thing right?)

Got another patch, two very good things to know:

 • Moveset Merging during breeding has been greatly improved
 • Ultra Rare Berries are now much more effective for those past the first credits

Here's the full patch list:

1.0.26
=======
+Post game monster level scaling now depends on the highest level monster in your party, not the average, making ultra rare berries more useful in the post-game
+Coral Crab bugged move fixed
+Coral Crab riding issue fixed
+Improved Moveset merging during breeding
+Stat gain after level cap issue fixed
+Adjustments made to Appenton Crypt to be more properly solvable with Thunder Stomp if you decide to do Nio Kio Underground first
+Steam achievement popup added
+Ruby beam move description fixed
+Additional healing Kirys added

Tomorrow I'll be playing the game and testing various menus and adding sound effects for a bit more audio feedback like you guys have been requesting. I have a few more days before I have to head back to my day job and I plan to make use of them :)
Just something I gotta say...
Over the past week I have seen SO MANY (and increasingly) expert tamers helping out newcomers that are trying to learn how to find obscure legendaries, or really min-max the breeding system, grind for brilliants, etc.

Seeing all of that is truly heartwarming and I want to thank all of you for being such incredible people and helping each other out. Know that I'll be looking for every opportunity to add to and improve Monster Crown to make it the best game possible for the amazing players I've been so lucky to have join our community.

You make it all worth it.

Patch 1.0.25 : NET EGG

Hello tamers!

Let's start out with the patchlist!

1.0.25
======
+Enigma mirror boss spawn position adjusted
+Random wild eggs and lost tamer packs might be from other real-world players! (they are tinted green if so)
+Can no longer take on Worship before beating Torture
+Can no longer leave NioKio Dungeon with a battery
+Improved Monster Box functionality (10 box jumping)
+Performance improvements
+Improved button responsiveness
+Can no longer use monster actions while a story NPC is following along behind your monster
+Item duplication exploit fixed
+Can no longer tame David's monsters in the postgame

I worked very hard yesterday and fixed a significant amount of little things players have found since launch. For the full fix list, take a look at the "Resolved" items here:
http://bulletcpu.com/mantis/view_all_bug_page.php

If you'd like to log anything yourself, you can login with anon/anon, no need to signup.
Net Egg
Using the Monster Action Select button (2) on the breeding screen will now pull a net egg - that is the genes of a monster form another player! It'll also upload one of yours. Each time you press it it refreshes the currently set gene, so you can get an absolute world of new surprising combinations made by other tamers just like you!
Two fun extras
Just for fun, if you find a wild egg or wild tamer pack, it may be tinted green! What does this mean? Well it means it came from another real life player that lost their items in battle, or did some breeding. This will spice up exploration a bit and I bet you're about to find some truly cool monsters out there :)
Next Steps
Overall I'm going to be adding additional explanations to the game in the form of Mimika, little mimicking birds that you'll be able to find on routes that offer supplementary knowledge to your playthrough. I'm a player that greatly enjoys experimenting to learn new things, but this offers a great way to provide more info to those who want it, while also being easily ignored by experimental or pro tamers without any mandatory cutscenes to disrupt your flow.

There'll also be a message added to the Brutus battle for next update to encourage new players to try out strategies, rather than being scared off by Brutus's level, and think they need to grind to beat it. It's unfortunately something that puts off a lot of new players but this battle serves to teach you that a solid strategy means more than level!

I will continue to polish, fix and add more content to Monster Crown over the coming weeks, thank you all for supporting the game!

Patch 1.0.24 - Move Re-ordering, Permadeath toggle and Mirror Challenge changes!

Good Morning Tamers!

Check out today's patch!

1.0.24
======
+Party screen move reordering added
+Mirror Challenge floor count added, and challenge reduced to 50 floors
+Wild Troves now use Boss tame style, HP is more significant than level when they consider pacts
+Demon pact-only monsters now tameable in Card Dungeons
+Lost temple exit warp adjustment
+ZebraCoati added to Lost Province
+Online trading monster-select issue fixed

On the party menu screen (even in battle) you'll now be able to highlight one of the monster's moves with Z/Accept and it'll turn green, select another move to swap the order of these moves. This was a much requested feature and I hope it makes your play easier and more fun :)

Additionally, Permadeath has now been divorced from Hard Mode, these settings are now entirely separate and any difficulty can now add or remove permadeath for your nuzlocke-esque adventures.

The Mirror Challenge now has a floor counter and the difficulty level has been reduced from 100 floors to 50 floors (the awesome reward of course remains the same!)

To answer some other questions we've had, see the following pic:

To expain each stat:

A = Attack
B = Speed
C = Magical Resistance ("Special Defense")
D = Magical Attack ("Special Attack")
E = Defense
F = Growth Rate (how much this monster grows per level, higher = higher total stats by level 100)

These symbols in the gene lab mean the same thing. Originally these symbols in the gene lab were meant to be a bit of a mystery for players to experiment and discover, however, at one point we simplified the party screen after some requests and used these symbols instead, I agree that we should find somewhere in-game to explain this to new players.

Borderless visual settings are also on the way after many requests, they should be in this weekend!

Happy Friday tamers!

Patch 1.0.23

Hey guys,

Just wanted to push out another update with some additional small fixes and polish!

1.0.23
======
+Boosted party exp payout by 25%
+Aber's monster text fixed
+If you die and lose items, those items can be picked off where you died! The exception are storyline scenes where the dropped bags could cause issues
+Inventory UI made snappier and more responsive
+Aber's monster interaction text fixed
+Hermes BurningSky transformation added
+Gorriol now tameable

Of course one of them isn't real small, it's the dropped tamer pack! Yep, now when you drop a tamer pack (if you have a difficulty selected with item loss) you'll drop a pack right where you stand that you can go back and collect :), be sure to pick it up before you stop playing, these aren't saved to your file.

Gorriol is now tameable as well, as well as Hermes having a full suite of crossbreeds for its new Burning Sky transformation, be sure to give it a whirl - beware of Gorriol though, it's over level 100 and is relegated to the post-game. It has a 1 in 10 chance of appearing in a nightmare when you sleep in your bed at home - if you lose.... it might eat your soul.

Here's the additions I plan to work on for tomorrow's patch:
+permadeath separate toggle
+Enigma mirror floor number
+anything major posted to our bug tracker:
http://bulletcpu.com/mantis/my_view_page.php

If you'd like to report a bug or suggestion, that's a great place to do it (the steam forums are of course fine as well). No need to register, just use anon/anon

Happy Thursday tamers, and I do hear your requests for your own Bants and Kroodle doos - stay tuned ;)

Weekly Update 0.95 - Status Effects change, New Moves, New Monster!

Good Saturday tamers!

This week's update brings us to 0.95 and with it, comes some interesting changes.
Battle Balancing
One issue that has been common (but has become lesser over the months) is the OHKO-promoting nature of Monster Crown's battle system. If you got on a sweeping spree, you were hard to stop, and likewise, the foe would be as well. For this reason, there has been a change to the game and the operation of status effects.

First off, the game has received a 1.3x modifier on the HP of all generated monsters. This prolongs battles very little in the beginning but by a turn or so on average by the time you reach Crossroads, and a few more by late game. This makes battles last longer and gives you a greater opportunity to make use of buffs/debuffs and status effects.

Additionally, status effects now heavily reduce speed, so if there's a foe you just can't seem to slow down, status effects are a great way to level the playing field. Of course, this also means that they plague you to an additional level.

To mitigate this, the super common Aloe Leaf now also functions as a catch-all antidote, and heals any status effect when used. Should be a good way to put those stacks to use you've no doubt accumulated! :D
New Moves
To pair with the status effect change above, some new moves have been added that are sure to help in your team and strategy-building efforts:

Adrenatoxin
POW: 3
Type: Relentless
Has an 80% chance of inflicting Adrenaline Rush
Monsters: Cobreo, Vyrn, Amphyvern, Syleendra

Salt the Wound
POW: 9
Type: Unstable
Does 2x damage to a monster with status condition Wounded
Monsters: Gavile
New Monster
This week's new monster is Cheshinger. This monster was revealed long ago and has become a long-time favorite for some. Think you can guess what this monster is based on?

Weekly Patch + Hard Mode + New Monster!

Happy Weekend Tamers!

We've got a lot of polishing this week, along with some fun extras!
Hard Mode
Hard mode is now available! This feature is still experimental but there's how it works right noe:

 • When a monster gets KO'd it's gone! Forever!
 • When all your monsters die it's game over!
 • All scaling battles (tamers, chiefs, card dungeons) are no longer 40-60% of your current cap, they're now 90-100%. Much harder
 • Monster respect payouts are now at 50%, so you have to make every breed count!

Hard mode can be enabled or disabled at will, so feel free to try it out without having to start a new game and get locked in.
Card Dungeons
Along with some general refinement, after popular demand - now have a dedicated new song.
New Monster Code
Here's a brand new monster for ya ;)

MTI1fDV8MTIxfDEwfDd8MTAuMDAwMDR8MTB8N3wwfDAwMXwxMjV8MTY4fHVuc3RhYmxlfEFwYXRoDXwwMDEtMC0wOTMtMTAtMDAyLTIwLTAyOC0zMi0wMTgtNDUtfHwxLjF8MS40MTI4MzE0MDE4MjQ5NXwxLjYyNzY3NzAxMTQ4OTg3fDEuMTU2NzU2MjgxODUyNzJ8MS41NzkwMzQyMzMwOTMyNnwxLjUzNjc2ODI1NzYxNzk1fDEuMTk1NzYyMTA5NzU2NDd8P3w=

Just copy that code, and paste it in (Ctrl+V) at the code entry screen at the farm. It's level 5 so you'll have to level it up or spend some Ultra Rare Berries on it - any guesses what it's based on?
Other Fixes

Other Notes
Scouting has gotten a huge improvement this week, faster, more accurate, and more fun all around. Be sure to give it a try because I think you'll find yourself relying on it much more, default controls are 2 key to select your monster power (the target) and 1 to use!

+Box system fixes
+Minor UI adjustments

Weekly Patch 0.1.856

Happy Weekend!

This week's patch consists of some good functionality fixes as we continue to decimate that bug list as we approach the final stretch before release.

At the current rate we'll have all known bugs addressed in 1.5-2 weeks and then I'll be focusing on polishing the areas you guys can't see yet, like the late/post-game content.

This week voice actor extraordinaire Sean Chiplock worked with me to create a new tamer palette, one with a cool blue coat color that is at the end of the current tamer choice selection. You can choose this when starting a new game or by accessing the wardrobe in your bedroom at the farm. Sean contributed his vocal talents to our Early Access trailer, which you may remember!

[previewyoutube=epK8XIobtkg;full][/previewyoutube]

Also, I have videos on the way talking about the inspiration and design history behind each of the monsters you find in Monster Crown, as well as some videos reviewing some of the incredible pedigrees you've all been submitting to our gallery and discord, I'm really looking forward to some cool back and forth on that with you guys. Here's the pedigree site if you haven't checked it out yet - any monster found there you can paste right into your game at the Farm code menu!

http://crownsgame.me/?q=pedigree-gallery

Lot of really cool monsters up there!

Here's the full fix list:

0.1.856
=====
+Three new tamer palette choices added, the last one in the list was designed by Sean Chiplock!!!
+Scout system now works in card dungeons
+Monster info preview no longer fails to update when moving monsters within the same box
+Monster box now more reliable when moving around a lot of monsters
+Old Meerlin man sprite and house sprite updates
+Tarasque Overworld facing-up sprite animation fix
+Issue with displaying the attack info of the monster's first move in the box preview fixed
+Blank text box when checking malcious monsters fixed
+Clock visual fix
+Attacks in the party menu while playing with language set to Arabic fixed
+Issue that could arise when the time of day phase changed mid Jasper cutscene addressed.

---

Next week two more new monsters will be made available, so be sure to tune in if you're an avid collector. Have a great weekend folks!

Patch v0.1.83

Hey Tamers!

This week's patch has some great fixes and QoL adjustments, here's the list:

 • In-battle Status affliction indicator
 • A glitch associated with the CROWNED state, causing the wrong sprite to appear has been fixed
 • Several late and post-game fixes
 • A text formatting issue affecting non-english languages fixed
 • Item inventory sorting now available, with a section for key items such as the Dream Egg and Soldier Journals. Key items will not be lost.
 • Farm box system increased from 80 boxes to 150, likely the final expansion as this will allow for 2400 monsters, roughly two for every form of every monster in the entire game
 • You can now jump up 10 boxes at a time as you scroll with the up button
 • When depositing or withdrawing from the item bank going below zero causes the full amount to be selected for deposit/withdraw and the left and right buttons offer increments of 10
 • Graphical issue on Libird's overworld sprite fixed
 • Jess and her Oasis crew received updated sprites
 • Dad KO'd in the woods has a new sprite
 • Tenna's assistant has an updated sprite
 • Level up message not displaying properly in spanish fixed
 • Alignment adjustments on the level up stat display

Some good fixes but not super exciting right? Well well well let me hook you up with a monster code you can enter at the farm for a brand new monster, hope you enjoy ;)

Sure this monster is ridiculously powerful and post-game only but we'll just keep this between us...

MTMyfDQ1fDE4NTd8MTExfDEwMnw4OC4wMDAwOHwxMTh8MTA4fDB8MDkzMDc0MDYzMDA4MDAzfDEzMnwxNzR8bWFsaWNpb3VzfEtvbWFuZGVyDXwwMDMtMC0wMDgtNy0wNjMtMTctMDc0LTIyLTA5My00MC18fDEuMXwyLjgyMzk3ODUyNTQwMDE2fDIuMjAzOTkxMzQxNTkwODh8Mi4wMTk4NTY0NTI5NDE4OXwxLjc0NzU1NzY0MDA3NTY4fDIuMzM1MjQwNDU5NDQyMTR8Mi4xMzUwMDc3OTg2NzE3Mnw/fA==

Go ahead and paste that into the code entry (no need to type it out painfully)

There are also two other monsters that are not yet available in EA have been set loose on our discord this week as a reward to someone that solved two in-game mysteries as a special prize. I'm not sure how generous they are, but hop on over and ask if you're in the elusive-monster-finding mood.

Also expect some very interesting news next week...

Patch 0.1.826

Happy weekend Tamers!
New Languages
This week we're adding a bunch of new languages to Monster Crown! Available now are:

 • English
 • French
 • Italian
 • Spanish
 • German
 • Brazilian Portuguese
 • Simplified Chinese
 • Arabic

Starting today you can select those from the options menu and play in a language that's most familiar to you! I can't confirm which yet, but two more languages are on the way as well :)
Early Farm Access + Code Entry
Starting today the following box is available at the farm immediately after levelling up your starter and being allowed to leave the farm

Using it, you can access your farm monsters and swap them in and out, additionally, you can enter secret codes! Basically, you can easily ditch your starter in the box and start with something different, for example, one of the great monsters that have been added to our pedigree gallery, which has had so many awesome additions:

http://crownsgame.me/?q=pedigree-gallery

Or perhaps a friend has an awesome monster they've bred and wants you both to start a new file with it and run a challenge!

The possibilities are quite endless and more codes are on the way to not just grant monsters, but mix up the difficulty level like randomizers.
Online Battling
The online battling menu has a bit of a face-lift and the overall online battle flow has gotten a signficant tune-up, so online battles are more fun than ever.
Other Fixes
Here are some other fixes!

V0.1.826
========
+Online battle flow greatly improved and stabilized
+7 additional languages are now available
+Bug where the first chief could have a way overpowered team fixed
+Fixed entry-less cave in Desperado
+Can no longer enter power plant early
+Can no longer save on Sepnal ferry and those that did will be warped to safety on load
+Small fence graphical issues south of Nio Kio fixed
+Hyna that kidnap Layti no longer show up before/after the quest
+Three frost province rocks with glitched visuals fixed
+On screen egg indicator can no longer go astray
+Urs overworld graphical issue fixed
+Rain darkness level reduced
+Shop door no longer uses older tileset
+Invisible blockade in Frobec fixed
+Several other tweaks/polish

Have a great weekend Tamers!

Patch v0.1.825

Hello Tamers,

here with another patch! This one focuses on a visual tune up along with some miscellaneous fix ups.

The overworld now has several visual monsters just hanging about, or butting heads with a foe!

Or just scenic additions like these cats in Mill Town and Nio Kio.
New Monster
As promised, there's a little extra content coming throughout the weeks from here, be sure to check out the Deep Chasm for a brand new monster, it's a tough one with a very cool design by Dandey who is a super talented monster designer and pixel artist.
The CROWNED transformation is here!
It's been a very long time since we annouced this feature, here's a video from back in 2018 that explains what it is, max your synergy and get a super boost!

[previewyoutube=pEMNhGj1R6U;leftthumb][/previewyoutube]

Our battle UI has sure come a long way since then!

While this looks visually cool, and provides a type advantage, it's also a 1.5x multiplier on your attack, defense, magic and resistance.

While its easy to build synergy by defending, you'll have to swap with full synergy to pull off this strategic transformation. Be sure to use it strategically as a tanky monster can pass over a huge boost to a more versatile team member.

There's no tutorial for this skill in-game as I wanted people to have fun discovering it on its own, and its pretty straightforward once you've pulled it off once!
Fun
Some additional fun comes with this update, for example, using the skating power is much faster now, as well as providing a payout if you do super well, here's me trying it out, think you can beat my high score of 152? If you catch a screenshot of a higher number I'd love to hear how you pulled it off!

Riding monsters using the saddle icon now works seamlessly, there was some issues with it before not lining up quite right.

Also, if you have Thunderstomp and use it when a monster like Staglus or Mimika is flying overhead you'll be unceremoniously challenging it to a duel! Be sure you're ready to take 3+ of them on at once if you're so bold!

Thunderstomp's graphics have also been improved and even glow at night now.
Patch Notes
Here's the full patch list!

+New, cleaner and easier to read font
+Evening and morning phases now half as long, with day and night phase lasting longer to make up for the gap, these are more transitional phases and should be treated that way rather than morning and evening being as long as day and night.
+Color balancing work
+Moon can now be seen in battle in certain areas
+CROWNED transformation now available after unlocking synergy
+Many overworld monsters added (with a few fun secrets)
+When monsters fly overhead, thunderstomping challenges them to a battle (be wary!)
+Long black ice skating is now faster, has a counter and rewards cold, hard, cash
+Syleendra's overworld icon now glows at night
+Amidia's indoors sprite color fixed
+Saddle monster action icon now allows you to ride your monster seamlessly

There were many more fixes as I worked through our bug tracker:
Visit the tracker here

You can read up on every little fix on there but I wanted to summarize some of the major things you'll notice. If you have a bug to log, feel free to use anon/anon rather than having to sign up.

Content Pack #10!

Content Pack #10!!

Didja miss me?

I've been locked away, hard at work for the past 3-4 weeks, pulling long days and getting close to the completion of the development of Monster Crown.

Unfortunately that has kept me away from all of you and the excellent folks on discord and kickstarter - thankfully I'll be around much more often going forward.
Sepnal
As you may remember from our last Content Pack update post, Content Pack #8 was our last planned update at the start of our Early Access launch last summer, Content Pack #9 was a logical expansion of areas that didn't contain spoilers (The Deep Woods and east of The Farm) so it made a lot of sense to feature in a content pack and this one rounds the available content up even further with the launch of the Pedigree system and the maiden voyage of the Spenal Ferry, just east of Appenton City, you can find it here:

The Ferry offers passage to the isolated island of Sepnal. As you learned in Appenton, long ago a sage found the legendary monster Amidia and meditated near the statue-esque beast, gaining insight and ethereal insight into the relationship between man and monster, using this divine inspiration from Amidia, he created the first Monster Pact, which are now created en masse by the studious residents of Appenton.

However, later in his life, the sage grew philosophical on his creation and the dynamics between the cooperating beasts and their tamers. He theorized that a part of the monster's soul must be bound to the pact (and implicit agreement) and that if a monster dies while under pact, its soul may not be able to move on after death. In order to learn more and make a decision, he travelled to the melancholy town of Sepnal.

While there he established a tradition, he hoped that tamers would visit Sepnal after the death of their monsters and burn their pacts. As the burning embers floated out to the ocean, the monster's soul would find release and peace. He spent the rest of his life there.

However, while a huge wooden bridge once connected Sepnal to the rest of Crown Island, during the war the residents became deeply afraid of the wicked Philosopher Kings. In an effort to protect themselves they set the bridge ablaze, casting themselves into complete isolation. Recently however, a ferry pulled by a large monster was established that once again allowed travel to and from Sepnal. What happened during those years of isolation is unknown.
Pedigree System
The other addition to the game with this content pack is The Pedigree System. Many of you have created wonderful monsters during your time with Monster Crown and seeing what each of you create, share, or tweet at me thrills me every time, so much imagination is on display, especially those of you who write lore to go with your creations.

With the amount of crossbreeds in Monster Crown (over 1200) even though I personally drew most of them, it's easy for me to forget about certain forms I created sometimes. Seeing all of you create monsters that surprise even me, in color combinations I have literally never seen before is a true joy. I wanted to create a system that allowed for infinite monsters and you all have made that personal dream come to life!

But now it's time to share your monsters. Once you've created a monster you love, open up the party menu and settle on that monster. From there, hit the F10 button, this will generate a complex code and copy it to your clipboard. After pressing F10 you can paste it into a text document or shared with a friend. These codes can be pasted into the code entry screen at the breeding barn, allowing anyone on earth to redeem your unique code and get hands on with your completely unique creation.

I hope you'll give your monsters unique names, and that your creations become popular and sought after within the community. Those more interested in battling than breeding may come to rely on your excellent crossbreeds to create powerful teams, I encourage everyone to find their favorite style as a Monster Tamer and lean on other players and friends to help you get the most out of your play-through, whether you are an exploration expert, a battle master or a skilled breeder I can guarantee you your experiences, knowledge and monsters are a valuable asset to share with other players.

Once you've created your monster code you can post it, a picture of the monster and stats on our gallery:

Visit Gallery

While it's not necessary, you can write lore for your monster. I'll have a blast browsing and checking out your creations. Because crossbreeding is a real thing on Crown Island there's no reason to not consider your creations canon if they don't clash with lore, I also encourage you to give yourself some freedom on the dimensions of the monster, is that Primigon crossbreed you created the size of a house cat? Or or is it as big as an elephant? That's up to you and whatever you feel fits best. I can't wait to see what you create (and steal all your monster codes :D )

For future content packs it's likely I'll just add some extra monsters as the only other areas we have left to expand into are pivotal to late game plot and filled with spoilers, that being said, I promise to keep delivering new content on a regular basis until we hit 1.0!

Have a great weekend tamers, and don't forget to join the other tamers on discord!:

Content Pack #9 is here!

Hey tamers,

I haven't been able to share much about this content pack ahead of time, as many of you know our last content pack was the final one planned for Early Access before we launched, however, I'm a firm believer in monthly content packs so there will definitely be one this month and next month.

I wanted to share more information early but I've been super tied up with the business and planning side of things now that we're nearing the end of development so allow me to introduce you to today's content pack right now!

First off, there's a new area, the Deep Woods - remember when you fought Collure there was a passage to the north, bringing you deeper into the woods? Be sure to revisit that area to enter a new part of the woods with a slew of new monsters, be careful though - there's a monster breeding ground that is sure to give you a huge challenge if you're not prepared!

Along with these new monsters, two new "Legendary" monsters are now available. I won't spoil much but one is on a coast near the farm (if you're lucky!) and the other is kinda in flowering province (and kinda in Frost province!). They're a little tucked away in distant corners of the island but I know with how determined all of you are, they'll be found in no time at all :D

To go with the new monsters and areas there's a brand new forest music track (shout out to the incredible musician gameonion!) and a lot of work has gone into optimizing exploration out in the wild, especially when many monsters are around and chasing you.

In the near future we'll be launching our "Pedigree" program, a special way to share your finest monster creations with other players as well as sharing some teasers for Content Pack #10, which contains a new Town that was the final addition to the game and only possible due to the support (both financial and spiritual) shown by all of you, our Early Access players and supporters.

Thanks so much everyone, I hope you have a fun weekend and enjoy these new content additions!

Other fixes:
===========
+Two new expanded areas
+2 new "Legendary" monsters
+3 new standard monsters
+3 new monsters that some had but were extremely rare (Jungro, Perygrinn, Collure)
+Nio Kio windows graphical compression issue fixed
+No more bloom inside buildings and caves
+New Forest theme (gameonion is a masta)
+Significant collision detection optimizations, moving around out in the wilds is much smoother

Patch v0.1.733

Hope you all had a good week, just some fixes this time, but some good ones, and of course the welcome addition of some introductions to the online battling and trading features, definitely a great time to grab a friend and duke it out or swap monsters!

+Realigned/positioned all attack animations
+Enemy Tamers now properly display the items they use when healing their monsters.
+Enemy Tamers no long swap their monster to a type advantage the same moment you swap to one, they have to wait a turn like a real human bean
+Frobec Cavern bridge and icy spot fix

+Online battle/trading tutorial added.

For those of you wondering about out next content pack we've actually reached the end of the content packs that were planned when we launched into Early Access last year! That doesn't mean they'll stop though, I've thought up what this month's and next's will contain. They will primarily be expansions of the world and available monster pool, looking forward to sharing more soon as one of these expanded areas was not planned before EA launch and was directly inspired by all of you and made possible by everyone that supported us during EA so far!

Have a great weekend!

Content Pack #8 is HERE!

Hello Monster fans, Content Pack 8 is here!

The very first thing I want to do is to thank each of you for the huge show of support I received last week. Many of you know I lost my grandmother last week and the past week has been really something - spending time with family of course and everything that comes with the loss of a loved family member. The countless messages of support I received on here is something else. Thank you so much for your kindness and understanding.

With that being said, you might be wondering what's in store for Content Pack #8? Well, a lot of great stuff, first and foremost, the next expansion to the main storyline.

Head to Appenton Academy to get started on what comes next! Be prepared because you're headed deep into the underbelly of the city...

Additionally, a while back I showcased some additional scouting powers, namely, the ability for your monsters to shoot a swirling fireball to take down enemy monsters on the overworld.

This ability is super powerful and can be used to mow through wild encounters and quickly level up your team. The previous scouting ability favored monsters with a high physical attack power, but this one is geared for magical attackers, so be sure to pick the scouting option that suits your party leader best.

As well, the monster riding option has been added to the monster power menu making it easier to ride your monsters, however, you still must have your monster "sit" first, which is something I'm working on making automatic in the future as it's a bit cumbersome as-is.

Once you've obtained all three powers a small traveling monster show can be found in Crossroads province. It has a chance of spawning each in-game morning and can appear on various roads surrounding crossroad town - if you see a crowd, that's the spot!

If you figure out how to win a huge payout, you might find yourself with an additional monster treasure, a monster with my personal favorite egg design :)

For those of you just tuning in since last content pack I've also added several new powerful healing items - let's be honest, you've outgrown Aloe Leaves haven't you? - that can be purchased from any store beyond Mill Town and a very special Ultra Rare Berry, which makes levelling up newly hatched monsters a breeze. If you've got the cash a newly hatched monster can be caught up to the rest of your team in less than a minute.

That's it for today tamers, there are some additional bug fixes as well here and there, some cutscene timing modifications to make things a bit smoother, etc.

Hope you have a great weekend.

Death in the Family - Content Pack slight delay

Hey guys,

About 24 hours ago I got a call from my parents that my grandmother passed away from cancer. They live in a different town so I had to travel to visit them and for the funeral for the next couple of days.

Unfortunately this will introduce a delay for this week's content pack, which includes the last of the three powers you seek in the latest updates.

The content pack was for all intents and purposes complete and I just wanted to test it a bit more, so it will launch next Friday instead, no big delay is needed.

Apologies for any inconvenience, especially after seeing all the buzz around the upcoming Content Pack, I promise it will be available very soon.

Thank you

Patch 0.1.72 + New Items!

Hey guys, hope you're having a great weekend!

Next week is the new content pack which will bring about the third power to add to your collection, so for this week we've got some fixes and some new items and improvements to make your playthroughs more fun than ever!

I pushed a new fix last weekend to ea-beta and pushed it to everyone a few days ago that came with some improved loading speeds and a big improvement to the reliability of the monster storage system. Your monsters won't get lost anymore and when you open your box, it'll rescue anything you've lost in previous months. I didn't make a post about it then as I was also working on some online fixes that weren't quite ready yet but I felt it was a good time to mention it!

Online battling is now much more reliable and you should be able to have some good fun with it facing off against other tamers, a great place to find a battle is on our discord of course!:

I can promise you there are tamers on there that will send you reeling from the power of their monsters. Some of them have embedded ridiculous power into cute little defense-less Apo packages, absolute sickos! :D

One thing that's come to my attention as well is that even with scouting, it can be very slow to level up new hatchlings and add them to your team, leading people to not get the most out of breeding and avoiding changing their team up. To remedy this, "Ultra Rare Berries" have been added to all the shops beyond Mill Town (didn't want them available too early!).

How do Ultra Rare Berries work? Well they will quarter the difference between your monster's level and your tamer ceritfication cap. For example, if you could level up to level 100, using multiple berries would work like this:

Monster's level after 0 berries: 1
Monster's level after 1 berries: 25
Monster's level after 2 berries: 43
Monster's level after 3 berries: 57
Monster's level after 4 berries: 67
Monster's level after 5 berries: 75
Monster's level after 6 berries: 81
and so on...

so as you can see if you had a tamer ceritifcation level of 100, and had enough cash, you could level a monst from 1 to 81 in two minutes! These berries are incredibly useful but fittingly pricey, $1500 per berry!

I hope that this will bring you a lot more fun of a Monster Crown experience, making breeding new hatchlings and adding them to your team a breeze.

The other new items added: Kroodle Tenders, Shoreyu Sushi and Big Meat, offer signifcant healing power as it can be discouraging to have to heal your very high hp monsters super slowly with Aloe Leaves. Adding these items to your pack makes long, risky journeys more fun to prepare for and without a PP system, a careful planner can survive without returning to civilization for quite some time!

Hope the rest of your weekend goes well, be back on Friday with your next content pack!

Patch 0.1.69

Hey guys,

this update comes with a general nerf to the super strong chiefs. On average, their teams will be 4-7 levels lower than before and it definitely feels like a more fair (but still challenging) battle. in my play-throughs over the past week.

Additionally, servers went down for some maintenance earlier this week and it ended up needing an update on the game side to fully restore connectivity, so this patch includes that as well.

Oh an of course some of you have sent me your files over the past few months for testing and those of you with hundreds and hundreds (let's be honest, closer to thousands) have loading times that are a bit longer than I expected! Instead of staring at a black screen waiting for that cornucopia of monsters to load up you'll now get a Gyn loading screen while you wait!

Have a good weekend tamers!

#this build will remain on the beta branch until Sunday, you can opt-in by right-clicking on Monster Crown in steam, choosing properties, and opting into beta "ea-beta".

Content Pack 7 is here!

Happy Friday tamers!

Content Pack 7 is HERE!!!!!

The other half of the monsters from the Frostbite vs. Ferrorizer competition are now in, in total, the following monsters can transform:

Frostbite
Hani
Frostbite
Domigon
Epheal

Ferrorizer
Ambigu
Chuk
Igrawn
Ix
Madis

As well of course as the next chapter in the Monster Crown story! If you're all caught up in the current story you're looking for three legendary beasts, and the second is now here! (the first was available in Nio Kio as of last Content Pack). Start your search in Frobec and try not to end up bitten in half!

This content pack is particularly nostalgic for me, as you'll be returning to an area familiar to fans following us since the early days, the Frobec Mountains were featured in a very early alpha demo, I hope those of you that remember those days feel just as surreal returning to those stomping grounds!

Next month's content pack will expand to the third power, tucked away deep in Appenton :)

Other Notes

This update also brings:

Brilliant monsters now bless the team with a temporarily boosted growth rate by 10% when leveling up in battle or using scouting.

Ton of new attack animations

You'll be prompted to confirm when you decide to save, a much requested change.

Plenty of polishing and bug-fixing.

Manga?!

A while back Ahab's Artwork approached me about the idea of a fan manga for Monster Crown. I was really flattered by the idea. I've poured a lot of work into building Monster Crown's world and lore, and who wouldn't want to have the opportunity to see their world expressed in manga format?

I decided to commission Ahab's Artwork to produce an **official pilot manga** for Monster Crown. This 6-page manga pilot follows a courier and his Monster Companions during a day on the job in the dangerous Desperado Province. You can grab it here:

Check it out Here!

The manga is currently pay what you want and you can decide on $0 and grab it for free if you wish,

right now we're using the reception of this manga to gauge the viability of producing a more normal length manga series in the future, following a tamer and their monster companions on a full length journey. While my focus will remain entirely on core development of the game for the forseeable future I'd definitely be involved with establishing the storyline and ensuring the world aligns with my vision for Monster Crown's world during pre-production.

I hope you enjoy the pilot!

FROSTBITE TRANSFORMATIONS ARE HERE! + Patch 0.1643 + Content Appetizer

Tamers! I've been very hard at work on Monster Crown and while next week's update is the next Content Pack, I think this week's update serves as a great appetizer.

Transformations - Frostbite!

First off we've got the heavily voted for Frostbite transformations available in this pack! The following monsters can be transformed using it:

Walerus
Hani
Domigon
Epheal

These monsters will get signifcant power ups and their new forms come with a slew of new crossbreeds for you to discover. Each one will have the move Cold Flurry added to their learnset. This move is learned at the start (level 0) so newborn monsters bred from these will have it right away but for your adult monsters you will have to visit the Frobec Move Learner to have it added to their current moveset.

Additional Content

First off, all monsters have received their own custom eggs and proper encyclopedia entries, as well as overworld sprites. We've also added two new chiefs for you to take on to earn exclusive new monsters and up your certification level! You can locate them in Nio Kio and Empathy Kingdom but you must have completed the quest in each respective city for them to appear.

Four new small sidequests have been added (two are less a sidequest and more a way to get a one-off Legendary monster that most of you have already visited but not yet obtained :D).

Card Collection

Card Dungeons have been given a power-up! Monsters will appear faster, with a higher total cap on screen at once, and all move at twice their natural speed. This makes turning cards holographic more thrilling and risky - beware!

If you've completed all the current story content (that is, you've completed Nio Kio City's mission), you'll be able to meet a Card Creator in Nio Kio back alley. This character has an impressive handheld printer from Hewston City, the hi-tech capital of Crown Island. With it, they'll be able to make monster cards for you.

In order to commission them you'll have to show them a base monster that she can recognize as a species (For example, you could show them Gyn but not Gyn's crossbreeds). It can really add up in cost but we've had such a great reception to our card collection feature that I just had to get some more content out for you with all the love you've shown. I'd love to see pics of your collections after you've commissioned your favorite mons and turn them holographic!

Wild Monster Movement

You may have noticed there are apparent spots on the overworld that your scouting icon and wild monsters cannot traverse. This is because the world of monster crown is streamed seamlessly in an open world fashion (you can reach anywhere from anywhere without loading screens) and the collision system is fairly unique within this genre. There were some decisions made during development that sped up my ability to create the entire large world as a single artist and designer early on as well as offering huge RAM benefits within Unity regarding scene management/loading.

These alterations helped in those capacities but without careful designing, could cause gameplay issues and unusually high CPU usage while calculating moment to moment world collisions, especially with 8-12 wild monsters chasing you that all have to respect these things as well and may cross into loading zones that the player is not currently within. I'll make a youtube video showcasing the system one day soon because I think a lot of you would find it interesting, but basically I didn't let scouting or wild monsters go across world loading lines.

Now that the game has been out there for a while and optimized in a lot of ways, I thought it was finally time to remove those limitation. I monitored the game closely this week while working on it and built some additional caching systems and I'm very happy to say monsters will pursue you like never before :) and even player movement will be a little lighter on the CPU.

I know this caused some confusion sometimes as the reason for this wasn't clear and I apologize for that. I know that it will all pay off when you're zipping around Monster Crown's world at top speeds in the post game ;)

Miscellaneous

If you transform a monster and the monster to be transformed into has a canon name, it'll be used as long as you have not renamed your monster. I avoided this for a long time because I care about the individual names you set and don't wanna make your loved Laz "Steve" change his name on transformation, so the logic works like this:

If Laz's name is his species name "Laz" he will be renamed to "Apo" after transforming, unless you named your Laz "Steve" in which case it will keep Steve. It uses the same logic as monster palettes basically.

One often requested Quality of Life adjustment is that after you use them once, the storklift and healer will skip their animation and heal/transport you instantly.

Overall there are 8 new monsters available in this update. Happy exploration guys, hope you look forward to much more content next week too!

Content Pack #6 - More Story, More Monsters, Minigames and ISOTOPE THERAPY

The time is here my friends, it's Content Pack 6!

Featuring:

 • Story Expansion
 • Casino Games
 • Plenty of new monsters
 • Isotope Therapy

Those are the highlights, but each needs a little explanation!
Story Expansion
Remember when Dania told you you could visit the Duchess' Garden? You can go ahead and visit her now, the guards will allow you through. You can take on the Duchess and see if you have what it takes to beat her Super Gro'd Cobreo, or visit her garden to locate many new rare monsters, these are ones I've had requested a lot so I hope you enjoy. You'll encounter a guardian to the inner sanctum, later in the game you'll be able to access this inner sanctum to meet monsters designed by our Kickstarter backers.
Casino Games
Now that two Hooper sisters in Desperadod have been... terminated... you'll be able to access the electrical city of Nio Kio. While there you can enter the casino and play some Casino games, Run Apo Run and Gorgem Gorge! They're a fun little minigame where if you get good (very good) you can actually make a profit!
New Monsters
While I won't spoil all the new monsters, one monster you'll be able to get your hands on is Serket, a special monster with a special ability. Serket's ability, Serket Protect keeps Serket's magical stat in a loop. If it drops below 0.8x it'll shoot up to 1.5x! Additionally, if you power it up beyond 1.5x it'll loop back down to 0.8x.

Odd ability right? Well, it makes it so Foes can't totally destroy his magical attack stat without accidentally powering him up, but also, if you have an attack you love but it comes at the cost of a magic debuff, it might be right at home on Serket. Any attack dropping your MAG stat by more than 20% will actually produce a 50% GAIN! It can make for some twisted strategies, so be sure to try it out.

This ability is in effect for any monster with Serket's body type, so basically, if you breed with Serket as long as Serket is the primary the offspring will keep this ability (with the default gene).
Isotope Therapy
Ever ask yourself, why do monster taming games have evolution? Well, of course it's primarily so that your early game monsters can power up and still hold their own later in the game. In Monster Crown we don't have normal evolution and early game monsters are easily outclassed, which is fine if you get straight into breeding but what if you got really attached to that Laz you tamed at the start of your journey?

Enter ISOTOPE THERAPY. This radioactive therapy allows your monster's stats to "evolve" and be brought up to par. This can be done as freely and as often as you wish at no cost, it basically calculates a fair strength level based on your tamer level (you know, the one you boost by beating chiefs) and brings the monster up to that level. By tamer level 5 or 6 perhaps even your starter is due for a boost.

It was important to me to add this feature because while breeding, fusion, and taming new monsters are a ton of fun, sometimes you just have a total bro that pulled you out of a tough spot in that decisive battle. I know I get attached and it's sort of a trapping of this genre to bond with your monsters, so if that describes you, you're really gonna love this feature.

It can be located just north of Appenton (check the map in the above pic!). You may have to do complete a couple of challenges first though ;)

I hope you all have fun with this expansion and I think after playing it, you'll get a bit of a sense for what's coming next in the story!
Yesterday's Giveaway
The winner of yesterday's giveaway is Tenshi~kun on Steam and @AndrewR1022 on Twitter, I've friended you both so please send me your save so I can grant you your Brilliant Rituowl prize!

Have a great weekend Tamers!

Patch 1.579 + New Booster and Achievements!

Hey guys,

Most of the work this week has gone into work on the next Content Pack and work on late-game elements, but in the meantime, enjoy the much asked for Achievements and new Card Booster Set!

Achievements have been added to all major points in the story as well as for finding a wild hybrid and a brilliant monster (those are the rainbow, one in a thousand ones).

These achievements are rewarded retroactively so you're very likely to get a slew of ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED! popups when you first load your file but of course for new players it'll be a more seamless process.

The new booster set, Perilous Plains, can be found at shops just like Raging Riverbed. Which one appears each time you visit the shop is up to a coin flip, so when you see the one you want, stock up!

General TCG menu improvements are included as well to more easily enjoy this feature.

As for the next two content packs, they are fairly substantial so now's a great time to get caught up on the current monster roster, cause it's gonna expand real soon, as well as the story!

Have a good weekend folks!

Patch 1.577

Happy Friday Tamers!

This week we've got some bugfixes, but before we get into BOOORING fixes, I just wanted to say that two new cards have been added to the Raging Riverbed set, Harveskin and Nautlus, so those cards are out there now to collect!

The next booster set is almost ready, but I've reached a BIG internal development milestone that I'm so happy about, but has kept me super busy this past week, as well as a bug that really, did everything in its power to evade my detection.

Recently we had to upgrade Unity versions and that seems to have caused an issue with players of certain languages (so far Dutch and Spanish confirmed) in our last build. After some serious debugging and feverish testing, we found that save files would fail to load properly on specific PCs with specific languages. This was very hard to debug as I couldn't get my hands on these systems for myself and could not reproduce the issue on my own system, regardless, eventually I hammered it out.

It seems on this new version of Unity there is more implicit region/localization support, which caused a small pool of players in regions that use commas instead of decimals to denote the decimal place in non-whole numbers to have their game begin writing their savefile with incorrect characters. We've fixed this throughout all areas of the code and it will not be an issue going forward, we've added specific controls to enforce this.

The bad news is players that were affected, your savefiles have a degree of corruption. If your game was writing to your savefile using commas due to your region, when you load your game next this will auto-fix and the game will load properly on this new build of Monster Crown, however, if your game saved without writing the symbols at all then your monsters with attack, say, 23.4567 will load as "two hundred and thirty four million, five-hundred and sixty-seven". This obviously poses an issue! So when your game loads if you're part of that small pool of players (not everyone in those regions/languages are affected) your monsters's stats will be reset. Unfortunate, but allowing monsters to exist at that level of stats will cause issues down the road, unfortunately we're dealing with specific data loss on these, but it was important to me to recover your savefiles and monsters as best we could - I'm always heartbroken when I hear of players losing monsters and I know I'd be very sad to lose my own.

Overall this week's patch is mainly about delivering a more robust version of last week's with a few additional fixes, hope you guys are looking forward to the next expansion pack - it's almost ready!

Content Pack #5 - My Card Collection + More

Good Evening Tamers!
It's time for CONTENT PACK 5!
What's this content pack all about? Well, it brings the My Card Collection feature to Monster Crown!

Are you one of those kids (I was) with a binder full of your favorite collectible cards? Proudly displaying your rare, holographic finds on the first page and flicking through to show off your favorites? I know I was. All that hard work opening booster packs, trading with friends to create an awesome deck and an awesome binder was such a great feeling to pull off - even if someone conned me into trading away my Ultra Rare Magical Hats for a Toon Blue Eyes White Dragon. No regrets really though, that dragon could shine!

There's a kid just like that in Empathy Kingdom, the same town you found Gyn in and learned about the crown indicator for breeding, he's right next to the Storklift, don't believe me? Here's photographic proof:

Visit this kid to get your very own Monster Trading Card Binder. You'll be able to buy booster packs at any store, but your first hit is free as this guy spares you a booster. Once you've opened your pack you'll receive a random assortment of cards for your collection. You can examine your collection from this button on the main menu:

Once you're in, you can select any card and get lost in gazing at it (I know I have been guilty of this) and find yourself daydreaming in a procedurally generated dungeon! Various powerful crossbreeds will chase you, phasing through walls, hunting you down. You must locate the stairs to the next level of the dungeon and fight your way out to survive. Along the way you can tame these rare crossbreeds and collect all kinds of gold.

If you die though, you're gonna wake up from your day dream empty handed and disappointed! to add insult to injury, your card will have vanished for good. However, if you reach the end of the dungeon you'll get to keep any mysterious dream crossbreeds you've tamed as well as the horde of gold you've amassed and ALSO your card will turn holographic.

Once your card is holographic you can visit the dungeon as often as you like without worrying about losing the card.

One last note - this new system will let you get access to monsters you may have missed up until now, such as Jungro, Hooclaw and Roedra!
Monster Breeding Preview
So this one is a bit of a game changer! Before you commit to breeding a monster you'll now be able to preview the moveset, base stats and which ones come from which parent before you ever commit to creating that egg! You won't be able to see how it will look (only the egg is shown) but this will make breeding much more beginner friendly and just plain useful to you expert breeders out there.

P = primary parent attribute
S = secondary parent attribute
Other Changes
A big change that was made over the past two weeks (and the reason we delayed last week's update to this week) is a full increase in the resolution of the screen. Small screen players may only notice a small improvement but those of you playing on large displays will have a much easier time appreciating the game at an appropriate detail level without appearing too stretched out, and a much easier time reading the text size on-screen. As you can imagine this lead to me needing to adjust every menu in the game to make sure things still displayed properly. There still may be a thing or two I have to adjust but I believe I have caught almost everything.

The game's RAM usage has been significantly reduced (down to a little over half) and additional ambient effects (like fish in rivers, fireflies at night, bat-monster Romninoct flocks instead of Mimika at night and a revamped night visual) have been added. Changes were made to Chiefs to encourage you doing them in any order you wish as well, increasing your level by 1 rather than to a specific level and having auto scaling teams depending on your current level.

The tamer card has also been finished up, which you can view by pressing tab/toggle on the overworld menu to see a preview of yourself and your full monster team for quick screenshotting and sharing online or with friends so they can admire your expertly crafted beasts!

The next content pack will feature a story expansion and will have you reach the "middlegame" of Monster Crown's story, so I hope you look forward to that while trying out this latest new feature!

For the full changelog see below:

Patch 0.1.56

Second path of 2021 here we go!

Development is going well, cleaning up content and bugs and generally working on optimizations/QoL aspects. In this build the process the game goes through loading has been completely overhauled, which won't make a big impact on the average PC player but is definitely going to benefit those with older hardware and of course eventual console versions down the road.

Controllers have gotten heavy focus this week too, with players that prefer using analog-stick over dpads getting a lot of attention, For new players, these new changes will be seen seamlessly but if you've already installed Monster Crown it may be worth your while to go into the button mapper (now much more reliable) and reset the config. Because the old default has been written to your registry this is a great way to make sure you get the latest button configs. No real need to do this for most players but if you're an analog-stick user it'll make the game a lot easier to play and navigate.

Overall the game runs a bit smoother when navigating the world, a few small submenus have gotten touch-ups (the in battle pact/item select), the box system has had some cleaning up after last update's revamp, etc. Foe AI now properly considers synergy so situations like Gigadrile spamming a synergy-requiring move won't be an issue going forward.

I've also been working on wild monster AI, you'll notice that they're better at getting to you and moving around obstacles, but this is still a work in progress so expect more improvements.

Gridag has received a shiny new set of proper crossbreeds and with Meerlin taken care of last week the hermit's sidequest monsters are all functioning as they should in breeding.

Myrkrsormr has recieved new overworld sprites so expect him to be far less boundary breaking, we've put him on a diet :)

Have a great weekend tamers and thanks so much for your support!

EA v1.56
----------------------
+New Gridag crossbreeds
+Improved Controller controls (particularly when using joysticks rather than d-pads)
+Improved framerate and performance
+Improved game loading process (may not be very noticeable on PC)
+Improved wild monster path finding
+Monster battle AI now considers synergy requirements (looking at you Gigadrile)
+More fluid camera movement

Update v0.1.55

Hello folks and Happy New year!

I hope you all had a great holiday 2020 and a huge thanks to the influx of new players over the holiday during the Steam sale, it warms my heart to see all these new players get to know Monster Crown and fall in love with specific monsters, all the while creating their own, it's the most beautiful thing to me!

In this build you'll notice that several menus have had touch ups or redesigns, new sound effects and general menu responsiveness and ease-of-use (the item bank for example is much faster and easier to use). You'll even be able to check out your monster's stats right from the party screen.

Additionally, Meerlin, Teedon and Walerus now have new, more fitting genetic variants, be sure to check them out as I think you'll really enjoy them - Malicious Walerus is a personal favorite!

There's also been some *serious* bug fixing going on, which you can see the latest of on our bug tracker:
http://bulletcpu.com/mantis

No need to signup, you can use anon/anon but if you have an issue you'd like to hear back personally on it can be worth signing up so I can find you and you will get email notifications if I post on the issue.

There are currently 36 active issues on there, all of which I plan to have remedied by month's end if things keep going as smoothly as they have been. If you have an issue you think we missed, please feel free to add it on there. I think in October we had almost 200.

Content Pack #5 is still on the way later this month (expect more details soon) but Content Pack #6, planned for next month is one we actually just decided to beef up and add even more new things to, so be aware, there's a lot of new content on the way (monsters, content and features!).

Be sure to check out Mantis if you want a longer bug log but here's the highlights:

v0.1.55
======
+New Teedon variants
+New Meerlin variants
+New Walerus variants
+New monster party screen
+Icon over Humanism Chief to notify players of what to do next and make sure they don't get stuck not knowing what to do next
+Tamers spawning with level 1 teams fixed, these tamers were always meant to be even tougher, so now a few wild tamers will have full parties AND outlevel you!
+Friendly monster popup no longer sticks around after speaking
+No longer automatically pick up fruit after battle if you are standing in front of one at battle start
+Mac users no longer need to worry about missing monster icons or one with red/blue placeholder colors
+Respect points no longer consumed if breeding fails
+No longer level up by 2 levels in the early game when you should increase by only one
+Now have a visual indication of both the item being used and the amount left while applying items to your monsters (thanks Kyle Toom you're the best)
+Separate Music and SFX sliders
+Scanline setting saved
+Many more tweaks and adjustments and refinements

Have a good weekend tamers!

Patch 0.1.537 - Big Update!

Hi Tamers,

You may have noticed there was no patch last week, that's because last week's patch spiraled out of control and now rivals some content packs. That being said, the next content pack will arrive after the holidays and this isn't a true one, but there's definitely plenty to sink your teeth into!

Side Quests

This patch contains several new side-quests, a few of which offer brand new exclusive monsters that could not be obtained before. Some are also tucked away or quite tough to win. I think you're gonna have fun with them :)
Balancing
The currently playable content has been combed over with an eye to balancing and pacing, so a new play-through with the new content will offer more hours of play than ever before, at a much smoother pacing and challenge level.
Monster Respect System
Maybe you've heard about our new Monster Respect system, it's a cool new system that adds a little more challenge and much better pacing to Monster Crown. First thing you need to know is that Monsters will not level up in a way that exceeds your current respect level.

You start the game at certification level 0, which means your monsters cannot exceed level 9. Level 1 means you can reach 19, 2 is 29 limit, and so on. This may sound like it slows things down but due to the implementation, it won't. This new system is very loose, and isn't restrictive at all to the average player.

See, there is a type of player that likes to grind and level up as much as they can, or to tame a boss that isn't meant to be tamed until much later in the game, and then they wish that the rest of the game was more challenging. Most players play naturally, levelling up in a pretty predictable way, for those players, you will never hit this wall before unlocking the next level.

However, if you are the sort of person that has reached level 70 before meeting Beth (you know who you are! ;) ) this change is for you, and will ensure that even if you go all out, you will feel challenged by the game, without making it completely punishing to new and casual players. As you may remember from a previous update Bosses no longer care about your level, and unlike wild monsters, the biggest factor is the level of HP remaining. You can still tame them, but it'll be much harder, and if you tame a monster that exceeds your current level, they will be scaled down.

You may be wondering if when you load your file all your monsters will be scaled down, no, they won't (unless they exceed level 200, in which case they will scale down as that's the final game's limit).

Additionally, as you fight tamers and level up you will earn monster respect points, which are consumed when you breed monsters. Monsters are interested in growing strong, so there's a limit to how long they want to sit around making WEAK BABIES (Yuck!) and want to get back to growing strong. This also sounds limiting but trust me, due to the implementation only min-maxers are going to run into a situation where they have to go intentionally earn points.

All of these mechanisms are primarily for players that want to grind, min-max and still be challenged. Casual players will rarely be reminded they even exist.
Chief Tamer Certification
Do you remember Vyrnia from Empathy who helps you get Gyn? She mentioned she's a chief tamer right? Rodney from Frobec is the same. These chief tamers in each town will offer you a high stakes battle - beating them earns you the next respect certification level and a free monster (some have never been available before today!) but if you lose, they will take one of your monsters! For these battles I recommend saving and reloading if you lose, or turning on Easy Mode to remove the penalty for losing (see below), but if you're hardcore, feel free to subject yourself to this all-stakes battle!

Only one of these chief battles are required, and if you like the current level of challenge, or would like to auto-adjust a "hard mode" on yourself, feel free to skip them, they are optional and can be done in any order.
Easy Mode
Long requested Easy Mode is here! It offers:

 • Free Healing
 • No Item Loss
 • 100% flee chance
 • Chiefs do not take your Monster
 • Lowered Foe AI
 • Increased EXP gain

So if you're interested in a more easy-going Monster Crown experience, give this option a whirl! You'll find it under Settings > Difficulty
Quick display buffs/debuffs
Enemy Rodask's DEF dropped 10%
Enemy Rodask's ATK dropped 10%
Enemy Rodask's SPD increased 5%
Enemy Rodask's RES increased 5%
...
...

That's a lot of reading, a lot of clicking, and sure slows down battle! From now on, these messages will be batched into a quick display so no matter how stat crazy you get, it won't slow down your battles.
Other Miscellaneous fixes
EA v1.537
----------------------
+Monster respect system added
+Breeding now requires enough monster respect built up
+Can now only battle wild tamers once
+Defeating a tamer awards monster respect
+Defeating a chief tamer awards a new tamer level
+Can only level up monsters to the attained respect level

As you can see there's never been a better time to start over and try out the game from the beginning again. This build is currently in EA-Beta branch but it's so involved that we're going to wait until Sunday to push it to the main branch, this one touched so many systems and grew so big that the extra week to do some more play-throughs and have our lovely publisher Soedesco give it a spin is something I really felt we needed. Scattered around are new items, NPCs, moves and monsters, have fun catching up on Monster Crown and tune in next Friday for the special holiday-colored Echelk :)

Content Pack #4 - Atomic Clock and more!

Happy Friday!

Content Pack #4 is here.

Of course the thing everyone's been waiting on is the magical Atomic Clock which cause a dramatic transformation in Dracoyle, Darwhol and Gorgem!

Where can you get your hands on your very own Atomic Clock? Well, in a cave just north of Empathy Kingdom, you can find one here:

You'll also be able to explore a fun, Atomic Clock-oriented surprise quest somewhere in Empathy Kingdom. It features a monster many of you have had your eye on for quite some time!

After the quest, the Atomic Clock will begin appearing in the wild in deep-wilderness Tamer Packs just like Super Gro did last week.

But that's not all, we've got two more interesting new mechanics!

Synergy Attack Upgrades

So, a few months ago a couple of people came to me asking for special attacks be added that could be unlocked via the breeding system, and to add a little more strategy to the synergy system, so there's one unified solution that I think you're really gonna enjoy.

There's a new attack, Dragon Tackle that will upgrade to Dragon Tackle 2 in the presence of synergy. This move is your first introduction to the mechanic so it's pretty clearly named to make the upgrade easily understood. Additionally, the move Swipe can now upgrade if you have built up synergy into the move Full Slash.

Additionally, if you breed two monsters that know Dragon Tackle the offspring will be born knowing Dragon Tackle 2, so this provides a new layer to battle and breeding alike. Let me know your thougths on these mechanics. There are plenty of great possibilities in breeding especially in move combination, we could have moves that combine the effects of two other moves, or take influence from the presence of another.

I'll be looking at all the attacks in the game and the monster movesets over the next couple of months to create more balance and fairness in the battle system and just make things more fun overall.

One last synergy-related note, at long last the game will pop-up prompt you to let you know the benefits if you attack at each synergy level, so no need to memorize what buffs/debuffs are associated with each level of the synergy gauge.

Oh, Myedin and Madis are now available in the wild, and there's a new move, Swallow Power that lets you absorb attack power to gain synergy. Do you think you can find them all? ;)

Misc Fixes:
EA v1.532
----------------------
+Wild monsters, if the species is capable, can fly over obstacles
+Following monsters no longer jump "In front" of player when getting control back
+Rain graphics extended to fix visual oddities
+Tanukrook Brute crossbreed added
+Move learner now keeps the moves you know checked
+Player shadow now not lost when entering house/dungeon
+Monster transformation now multiplies base stats properly
+Monster transformations can now receive new moves to their learnset

PS: Work on Achievements is under way, let us know what sorts of achievements and stats you'd like to see. Some people seem to want achievements that anyone could do easily, others like very difficult to obtain achievements, what's your take?

Early Access Weekly Challenge #13 - Super Gro Challenge

Hey all!

We're back with a new challenge! Last time we had a recruiting challenge and the winner of that one was... dro ghost#1995! With their monster 'Aw Chucks'

Super Gro Challenge

Super Gro is HERE! + Patch

Hey folks!

It's time to get half a content pack a week early, introducing, SUPER GRO to the world!

Head over to Empathy Kingdom and swing by the flower bed just outside the Duchess's Tower, there you'll find your one free Super Gro.

With it, you'll be able to unlock the Super Gro transformations of Laz, Apo or Jungro:

If you use the item in-battle, you'll be able to activate a mid-battle transformation and keep your Super Gro item for re-use, but if you use it on a monster outside of battle the Super Gro will be lost, in exchange for making the transformation permanent.

If you want more, better get searching! The deepest wilderness tamer packs have a low chance of containing one.

Tune in next week for Atomic Clock!

Some additional fixes:

EA v1.53
----------------------
+Boss monsters no longer respect level difference when attempting to tame (must deplete HP)
+Message stating if a transformation item does not work on a monster
+Transformation items no longer used up if they don't have an effect on that respective monster
+Water now animates in caves/underground
+New Molkuran Overworld sprite
+Cleaned up code for the breeding slots, more stable and reliable now.
+Transformation animation improved

The time is here to learn about Content Pack 4 and cast your vote!

[previewyoutube=KuzI56l8rkE;full][/previewyoutube]

Atomic Clock will transform Dracoyle, Darwhol and Gorgem

Super Gro will transform Laz, Apo and Jungro

So Tamer, are you team Super Gro? Or Team Atomic Clock?

Tweet with the above hashtags and vote on our twitter post to cast your vote.

Both items will be released on the 27th for Content Pack #4, but the winning team will have their transformation released a week early to everyone on November 20th.

Let us know what transformation is your favorite!

Patch 0.1.487

Hey guys,

Hope you all had fun running around the next portion of the island and collecting Halloween Harveskin, which is now back to its default colors.

Here's the patch list:

EA v1.487
----------------------
+Campfire no longer visible in battle
+Player off-grid after stopping riding fixed
+Scrave, monster without yet complete data, removed from random monster pool
+Frost Province Storm no longer cleared after leaving caves
+Brutus riding position fixed
+Monsters save slot id (Organization fans, it's time to party)
+Echelk sprite polishing
+Frost Hooper sister no longer looking the wrong direction
+Harveskin is back to normal coloration in the wild
+No longer stop running after scouting

Two big things you might enjoy with this update are that:

A) You no longer stop running after scouting, which could sure wreck your momentum when scout-grinding!

B)The box system now remembers specific slots, not just boxes, so you can organize to your heart's desire.

With B, you will notice (especially if you have a TON of monsters) the game will hang the first time you open your box system. This is the game going over every one of your monsters and assigning them a box and slot id, this may shuffle things around, and will recover any monsters that were previously lost to the "void between boxes". From then on wherever you lay a monster, it will be there when you come back!

Expect some information on Content Pack #4 a little earlier than we usually share info on content packs this month, I can't wait to see what you think (and which side you choose ;) )

---

One last thing, a little art gift for those of you that chose Canite :)

#Please note that we want to keep the primary EA build stable so new builds will be uploaded to the EA-BETA branch for one week before being moved to the main stream. Anyone can access this branch, just right-click Monster Crown in Steam, go to properties and select the EA-BETA branch to have the up to the minute, bleeding edge updates.

Content Pack #3 is here!

Bringing three new towns, two new provinces and a load of new monsters, you can begin by taking the Desperado-East Bridge that was previously occupied by a Hooper Sister (please keep all hands and monsters inside the vehicle at all times!).

Additionally, a new feature has been added, Monster Riding! This is just for fun (but does boost your top travel speed by 12.5% !) and can be accessed by having your monster rest like when you feed or talk to it and hitting 3, adding this to the monster action select (like sitting and scouting) is on the way (with any luck later this weekend) so you don't have to press yet another key. As you can imagine, making monsters rideable in a game with this large a roster using pixelart is no small endeavor and ended up being quite a bit more complex than I first anticipated, but I knew it would add to the immersion and fun of travelling with your monster companions.

Curious if you can ride your favorite monster? Check this list of currently rideable monsters:

Primigon
Raptor
Brutus
Myrkrsormr
Stega
Echelk
Tanukrook
Stamlanche
Gualop
Drangus
Traumata
Trove
Gigadrile

Just a simple feature, but can be pretty fun when you're out in the wilds with your monster bro.

I hope you enjoy the second third of Crown Island, get familiar with these towns now because later in the story you'll be revisiting them - and learning what dark secrets lie within!

As you may recall, your next destination after rescuing Dad was to visit King Dania (check your map!), so in this content pack you'll meet her and honor her request, afterwards, you get a ticket to access the Duchess's Garden, which will be made available in a future content pack. Along the way you'll encounter a lot of great monsters and lore, I can't wait to see what you create :)

I've received a few complaints regarding control issues that really soured people's experiences. It seems the vast majority of people are playing without issue, but we have some potential controller issues, they may be specific to the PS4 controller. If you are one of the ones that experienced this please know that I'll be doing a lot of PS4 controller testing this weekend and if you have any details to share on your experiences, my ears are always open.

Have fun in Content Pack 3 and join us on discord to share what you find and create!: https://discord.gg/WwRvm9B

Thanks for all your support!

Exclusive Halloween Harveskin! + Patch v1.48

Hello!

I've been so tied up with Content Pack 3 and thinking of little else I almost didn't even realize Halloween was almost here!

That is until Blossom from Soedesco suggested doing something with Harveskin for Halloween - initially I thought of just boosting spawn rates but she actually came up with a terrific alternate palette.

From now until November 6th in the beta branch (Sunday if you're in the main one) if you tame a Harveskin it will have a unique coloration that isn't available on any other monster. Harveskin caught after November 6th will be their normal coloration once again, so be sure to add this limited time special monster to your collection. If you'd like to opt into the beta branch and aren't already, details are below.

Along with that, the eastern desert cavern items have had their ids updated properly so they do not respawn after a reload, I'll be adding the appropriate ids to all the other items in the game over the next few weeks so you can't reload-spam to get a hundred for example.

Honestly whenever there's a situation where more of something is available than intended I'm not in a huge rush to fix it, as thanks to all of you for tolerating bugs and helping me improve the game its only natural that occasionally you get a nice benefit from playing Monster Crown while it's in development as well :)

Here's the actual changelog, I had to remove like, 12 items from this because they're all Content Pack 3 spoilers:

EA v1.479
----------------------
+Items now do not respawn after pickup
+Harveskin special event custom color now available for Halloween! (exclusive palette)

---

Speaking of which, while many of you are no doubt enjoying a chilly adventure in Pokemon Sword and Shield this weekend, next weekend you'll be able to enjoy a chilly adventure in Monster Crown as well, as the second third of the Island opens up!

A slew of monsters, two new provinces, three cities as well as new backstory, lore, music and a small fun new feature await. You're gonna love it :)

Build 0.1.477

Another week another build!

Just some general fixes:

EA v1.477
----------------------
+following Monster no longer disappears after certain cutscenes/interactions
+Situation where you could get stuck in the party screen fixed
+Now get money properly after Brutus fight
+Exp screen no longer moves backwards sometimes
+Net Egg disabled
+Titan Tectonic now reduces synergy appropriately
+NPC that could cause you to get stuck moved a bit to remove the issue
+If items you're using on your monsters are gone you get notified by "Fresh out!"
+Haunting moan can no longer heal the foe

You may have noticed that the Net Egg has been disabled. This is unfortunate, but several hackers have intentionally bypassed the bounds of the game and got their hands on late game and post game monsters, many with incomplete data and have uploaded them to the Net Egg servers. Don't worry, this feature will be back for full release but it's too easy to get spoilers or faulty monsters with so many people bypassing the intended limits of the current content.

Content Pack #3 is also going really well and it'll even have a little more content than previously anticipated. I know we haven't given you anything concrete to chew on yet for Content Pack #3 but I think once we get a few things out of the way this coming week we can share some more hard details :)

Have a great weekend (and great holiday weekend if you're a canadian like me! It's thanksgiving here)

Content Pack 2 + Patch v.0.1.472

Hey guys,

Usually updates launch on Friday or rarely, Saturday, at the end of the week, however, we're launching this one a day early, and it's not just a regular update, it's a content pack!

This content pack has three new great features that I think you're all gonna love!

Hi Temperature (Hot) Breeding!

Turning up the dial on the heat in the breeding lab, Embryos grow so rapidly and so energetically they leave the egg immediately, allowing you to check if they're Brilliant, their base stats, etc. This mode is for the real competitive breeders that do a lot of experimenting and want to see the results of their efforts immediately.

The trade-off? Getting that monster instantly is great, but if it gets hurt, it dies! For good! You'll have to level up your level 0 hatchling without letting it get hurt in order for it to grow to its true form.

Gene Lab

Waaayyyy over in Hewston, the far-right island on the map, is an advanced Gene Lab that lets you build your own custom chromosomes for breeding. While that part of the island isn't open yet, the eastern-most Hooper sister can sneak you in!

Once inside you'll find a series of machines that have special symbols on them. Depending on which switch is flipped, the monsters you breed will inherit different attributes from their parents. The true meaning of each symbol is a mystery, so feel free to experiment, or work with other players (or think really hard :) ) to uncover the exact formula for your perfect crossbreeds.

Once you save a custom Chromosome, they can be set in the breeding menu before doing any hatching. These chromosomes will work for normal breeding, hi temperature breeding, even net egg, so have fun with a whole new world of possibilities. I know this feature has been greatly anticipated by many of you!

Apo

Ah the elusive Apo!

As many of you know Apo are small, weak animals that reside in the Windy Province. They can be attacked by an evil fungus that kills the host and reanimates it as the unstable Laz. Apo is pretty weak and not really fit for battle, that's why it's a harmless monster you can't add to your team.

HOWEVER, rumor has it there is a location called the "Apo Plateau" where a unique item, "Apo's Light" can be obtained. This item can be used to remove the fungus and restore a Laz to its original state. Later in the game you'll be able to find an Antifungal that does the same thing, but this one specifically is a gift from a very powerful Apo! In the final game you'll only get one "Apo's Light", however, just for this weekend you can keep asking Apo for more of the item when you first meet it so you can make as many Apo as you want as celebration of the Apo love I see across our discord and twitter and steam forums! Next patch though it'll be down to one :)

It's a lot of work to turn Laz back into the quite weak Apo, but if you work this hard, who am I to stop you? Also, while Monster Crown monsters are quite fierce overall I think this amount of effort to get a cute monster should be rewarded, I think you're really gonna enjoy Apo's crossbreeds, and the future holds an upgrade for each. Unfortunately I can't share any more details just yet :D

---

With the features out of the way, here are some additional notes:

EA v1.472
----------------------
+Pact success formula improved, an oversight caused lower than normal rates from reduced HP (in other words, HP has a bigger impact on pact success now)
+If the amount of EXP granted is less than 1 it becomes one, this solves the issue where it appeared you stop getting EXP at some point when defeating monsters much weaker or while using party exp.

With Content Pack #2 out in the wild work continues on Content Pack #3 which will be our largest expansion yet and will include many new areas and monsters to enjoy. It'll be a lot of work but I know it'll be worth it once I see you all let loose on more of Crown Island.

Thank you so much for playing Monster Crown!

Patch v.0.1.469

Hello Crew,

Another week's work of patches while I work on wrapping up Content Pack#2

Making significant work on Content Pack #2 and #3 so expect more information on them real soon.

In the meantime this patch addresses some bugs, some prominent ones that are directly related to player feedback are: improvements to font rendering (easier to read and more clearly laid out in text boxes!), data-side improvements to play time and egg hatch time calculation, and types visible on the party screen.

Additionally, I know there are people out there still struggling with Brutus. I know there are large amounts of players coming from a mainly Pokemon background that face Brutus, see his level and difficulty in chipping away at his HP and decide the path forward is to grind as that is a strategy they've learned in the past.

I'm against nerfing him because those of you out there that make skilled use of infection, synergy disruption, your own synergy strategies, locating high magical attack monsters, etc. can make quick work of him.

So to compromise I'm adding a simple alternative strategy, the move orb Equalize (not presently learned by any monster naturally) is available for purchase at the Crossroads Shop. This move clears the field of all buffs and debuffs and provides an additional strategy for players. While the above strategies are all effective you have to start the battle with a strategy in mind, once Brutus has fully buffed himself you can be in a position where you can't win, Equalize offers a way you can still make it out alive if you don't realize what he's up to until it's too late. I consider it an easier "mode" to that and future synergy manipulation battles as there is a very tough one coming up in Content Pack #3. I think those of you that have already mastered these systems can safely ignore Equalize if you like a challenge, but feel free to find something that works for you - I'm all about options!

Also the Brutus Tamer now rewards you properly with $500, but this works right now if you return to him. I added a manual "refresh" of NPCs at the end of battles that made it all automatic but it caused an early game issue when I did a test playthrough this morning so I've backed out that change until I can get to the root of that one. Regardless if you haven't received your $500 and are post-Brutus you can safely return for your hard earned dough!

Have a great weekend!

Patch v0.1.463

Hello folks!

Hope you had a great week!

In our latest patch a lot of work has gone on behind the scenes for Content Pack #2 and while working on it, I was actually quite surprised at just how powerful these next features feel. Iof course have touched on them in previous dev work on Monster Crown but I think it just refreshed my memory a little and I can't see what all of you create with them. They're a secret for now but they're much requested by you guys - I value all of your feedback, requests and kind words on here and discord!

As for general fixes, here's the list:

EA v1.463
----------------------
+Adjusted incubator graphics
+Can no longer walk on Move Learner/Relearner
+Behind the scenes prep work for Content Pack #2
+New Gorgem sprite
+Weird word gaps in text boxes fixed, still needs adjustments to ensure the full box is used.

Since last week's launch of our first Content Pack, the NET Egg feature has been used almost 24 THOUSAND times! I can't believe it! Thank you so much everyone that has played with this feature and uploaded such interesting monsters to the service. I know there's been some killer finds by our discord players of particularly well crafted monster genes, we have such amazing monster breeders playing I really shouldn't be so surprised :D

I also have not had one report of an issue with Online Monster Trading, so that feature seems quite stable, which is definitely awesome news. As for Online Battling it's something I plan to return to, and the battle system in general very soon. I have a new feature in the works that will add complexity to battle and also, I just want to put more work into balancing.

I've heard some comments about the specifics of the move learner so I plan to dig into that in depth tomorrow and see if it needs any tweaking. Don't be surprised if another patch gets pushed tomorrow to tidy things up a bit but I won't make a full community post like this as I like to use these to keep you in the loop about fixes, but also the status of the project, without making them so frequent that they become annoying.

Thanks for playing Tamers! More great features and content are already in the cooker!

Patch 1.462 + New Feature Explanations

Hey Folks,

I couldn't believe my eyes last night when I checked the server logs and found there had already been OVER 4000 monster genes uploaded to our server from everyone using the new NET Egg functionality! It's over 6000 now (can't wait for the 9k joke).

If you haven't yet made use of the NET Egg and would like to learn more about what it's all about, here's how it works:

Set your breeding monsters, and then, hit Backspace, it'll reach out to our server and pull a random monster gene from all over the world. When you do, a random one of your monster's genes will be uploaded as well. You don't lose any monsters, consider it like a DNA donation from one of your creations! With everyone that has already made use of the feature you're surely in for a surprise no matter what monsters you use. To grab a new Net Egg just hit backspace again on that menu, you can also use that key to return to normal breeding.

That brings me to my next point, The Alternate Gene. The Alternate Gene is just a sneak peak at gene editing and the power that's on the way to you a little later during EA when you get the Gene Lab functionality. The Alternate gene has this configuration:

Switches which parent the following stats come from:
-Attack
-Magic
-Appearance
-Type
-Palette

Basically, the ones above that used to come from the primary now come from the secondary and vice versa. With some experimentation you can accomplish new things with breeding that you couldn't before, I believe the master tamers on our discord are already beginning to master things. Feel free to hop in here:

https://discord.gg/WwRvm9B

If you're interested in the new trading functionality or would like to dabble in online battles, it's also a great place to find a partner.

The final new feature added, the Move Learner/Relearner is from Frobec city but has temporarily made a visit to Humanism Kingdom. He can allow your monster to remember or forget moves, a much requested feature that lets you get the most out of your crossbreeding experimentation. Unfortunately this new functionality exposed an issue, previously, monsters movesets were not being inherited properly. While this is corrected in this patch, prior created monsters can have this issue - as a workaround, the move relearner instantly adds all known moves to your monster's genetic learnset now, so you don't have to worry about any loss of moves.

Check out the rest of the patch notes below:

EA v1.462
----------------------
+Odd collision issue around the breeding barn fixed
+Fixed location in Desperado caves where you could walk up onto the wall
+Improved NPC trading menu flow

#Please note that we want to keep the primary EA build stable so new builds will be uploaded to the EA-BETA branch for 24 hours before being moved to the main stream. Anyone can access this branch, just right-click Monster Crown in Steam, go to properties and select the EA-BETA branch to have the up to the minute, bleeding edge updates.

Content Update #1 is here!

Hi everyone!

Today is the day of Content Update #1! The first of multiple content updates that are coming to Monster Crown during the Early Access period.

This first big content update introduces three new game features: NET Eggs, the Move Learner and online monster trading. A NET Egg lets you breed with a random monster egg, which contains monster genes from players all over the world. The egg serves as a wild-card parent, resulting in a surprise monster. Use this feature by pressing 'BACKSPACE' in the breeding menu. The Move Learner allows monsters to remember a new set of moves from its large roster of attacks. Monsters can learn a lot of moves, but they can only remember six at a time. Now you can select which moves their monsters remember at any given time. Lastly, online monster trading lets you exchange their monster creations with the world.

There's also a new mystery feature added called 'Alternate Genes'. Just press F7 at any point in the game and head over to the breeding barn. You'll see a 'set gene' option in the breeding menu. We won't tell you too much about this just now, so get experimenting!

So what are you waiting for? Hop into the game and try it out! Found any bugs or issues? Let us know in the Steam Community hub or via Mantis: http://bulletcpu.com/mantis/

Have fun!

-Marten

Patch 1.458

Hey guys!

Another week another update, with this, our last update reaches the stable branch and a new series of updates reaches EA-BETA.

I've been hard at work preparing the Net Egg functionality, the trading, the move learner/relearner as well as some other fun surprises for our content pack. This weekend my focus will be on putting a little more polish on these features to get them ready for showtime, making things tidy and clear so it's ready for all of you and painless to use. These features are quite stable and I'm really happy with how they've turned out!

One extra surprise I'd like to include is an alternate chromosome to help tide you over until our full gene lab becomes available. Please let me know what alternate chromosome features you're most eager to get your hands on. I think one top requested feature is the ability to inherit type separately from physical body. Is that what you're most looking forward to? Or are there other things you'd prefer to shake up the inheritance of? Please let me know below, on discord or twitter (links below) what you're most eager to get access to!

One issue that has been bugging some Mac players is monster sprites not appearing on the party screen. This is due to a weird bug with Unity itself's draw functions not behaving properly on some versions (or processors) with Mac OS. If you experience this issue, please opt into the newest EA-BETA branch (you can use the same savefile!) and try it out. Everyone should now be able to see those icons, but the colors may appear in red and blue. If you could not previously see these images and now can (or cannot!) I definitely want to hear from you. I only have access to one Mac which makes it difficult to anticipate how it operates on every device, which is definitely why I appreciate hearing from all of you!

And if you're one of the players that experienced an issue with Eggs taking longer and longer to hatch I also want to hear from you. I've had a few of you send me your files and whenever I load them up eggs start hatching which means it's something setup-specific. The same in-game clock records playtime, controls the day-night cycle and allows eggs to hatch. I've added an in-game exact playtime counter to the settings menu so if you are someone with this issue, please open the settings and see the playtime clock. It should increase at a rate of one per minute, so if it's not ticking forward or ticking forward very slowly I definitely want to hear more about your system, OS, etc. You can send that info my way via the steam forums or discord/twitter as well. Just keep in mind that the numbers after the decimal aren't seconds, they are hundreths of a minute, so yeah they tick up faster than second do.

One piece of feedback I've received is that breeding becomes available too late in-game. Personally I'm really happy with having to play a bit, learn the basics and earn this unlock, however, it is an interesting idea to let people dabble with it a little early. I've been working on an NPC just after Mill Town that will let you breed one of your monsters with his as a first-try at the feature and a fun sneak-peak for new players. Presently I've given her a Bileat, but if you think you know another monster that would be better for her to have, I'd love to hear your idea :)

Thanks for playing and I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Patch v1.45

Hey guys!

The next patch is here for EA-BETA branch, check the notes below to opt-in if you haven't already.

We had some issues with our service provider the past 2-3 days, this prevented online play from working properly. Thankfully we've finally managed to get their support to remedy the issue. The server is back online with a new version of server-side software as well, to prepare for the upcoming trading, net-egg, etc. functionality.

Currently all the high ranked issues on our mantis server are resolved (I have to get on there and actually close them, but definitely headed in the right direction!). So when I sit down to do some more fixing tomorrow I'll start combing our forums and discord to catch issues that aren't already on my radar.

To establish a good update cadence going forward, I'll be submitting my latest build to our publisher (thanks Soedesco!) each week and pushing it to the stable branch each Friday, most play happens on the weekend so it'll be great to always have the latest out then. I'll keep updating the EA-beta as necessary to address newly found issues or if I want some help testing a feature.

Establishing this routine now means you guys can have a lot of confidence in me going forward and rely on weekly regular updates that makes the game smoother and adds new features. Expect an announcement very soon regarding our first content pack which has some much requested features and functionality that I can't wait to share!

Thanks and have a good weekend!

EA v1.45
----------------------
+Behind the scenes work on Trading and Network functionality
+Behind the scenes work on difficulty and randomizer funcionality
+Behind the scenes work on a means for qualified breeders to produce more of their signature monsters on demand for distribution
+Very very specific egg hatching clock issue. Due to a limitation of the floating point number datatype, for users with fast PCs, AND a lot of playtime, eggs can beging to take forever to hatch. This has been remedied by flooring the playtime variable at the top of each minute.
+Black Magic changed from Unstable to Malicious, as before it was basically the same as Inferno
+Settings menu complete revamp, now accessible from file load
+File select screen redesign
+House in Mill town with walkable walls fixed
+Ability to move before closing the save confirm dialogue box was causing some issues, fixed
+Eggs now show brilliant palettes properly on generation and hatching
+Experience properly spills over to the next level and levels you up (levelling from lv2 to lv6 in one battle works properly)
+Net menu visual improvements
+fixed a bug where you could end up free after a choice selection even though dialogue wasn't done
+starter select dialogue now more responsive
+more responsive and reliable flight map select
+brilliant odds for eggs fixed

The One Week Mark...

Hello Everyone!

Today marks one week since the launch of Monster Crown into Early Access. It has been an incredibly busy but also incredibly exciting time. It has been such a thrill to see you all get hands on and share your creations, thoughts and kind words. The launch has been a huge success and I'm honestly humbled by the reception!

Just like our Kickstarter, it inspires me further to ensure Monster Crown reaches the content and quality that you all absolutely deserve. We've fixed so many bugs and improved the gameplay flow over the past week and I appreciate the faith you've all shown by joining us so early in EA. There is no risk of this project becoming abandoned or no longer a priority, Monster Crown is the only game I have any interest in working on.

Yesterday's build was well received and offered a lot of great functionality in the beta branch so that will now be pushed out to everyone. When you play this weekend I think you'll notice the difference, especially with the box system and online! Of course I remain committed to squashing all bugs so keep sending them my way on our bug reports steam forum, twitter or our bug reporting tool and if you end up in any sort of "stuck" situation my DMs are always open, and I can fix your saves. You are never an inconvenience to me.

I also wanted to share all the code monsters that have been released so far. Many of these monsters are very rare or cannot be accessed until later parts of the game, however, they are ready for showtime, so you can use these codes to access them.

78MJNEYTYFthe Terrible Croc! Frigidile!
UMC3N7KDNDthe Tunneling Jaw! Molkuran!
DGJDF8PNK5the Crushing Cold! Ix!
IFSPIQIKNBthe Body-Bag Cobra! Taupsy!
PPGO34NJNNthe little Sadist! Hooclaw!
PPKO34NJNNthe slicing shadow! Crawkadaga!

I had a question about move inheritance so I wanted to set the record straight on that. Child monsters receive a level up learnset that is a merge of both parents. If there is a conflict (say Primary Monster learns Swallow Water at 7 and Secondary Monster learns Swipe) it'll inherit that of the primary parent. Yes, this means that eventually after enough generations your monster could learn a new move from level 1 to 100!

Right now the parent's current moves fill the offspring's moveset so until you can forget them, you can't really make a lot of use of that level up learnset. For that reason I want to share that the move learner/relearner will be in our first content pack and you'll get access to all of your monster's genetic potential movepool, this is retroactive so don't feel like you should hold off on breeding until then.

Hope you all have a great weekend and just an FYI, the latest build is v1.448.

Patch v1.447

Hey Guys,

I've been accused of being over-zealous in the past (I was asked to update less often during the Kickstarter!) so I promise to reduce my posting frequency after tomorrow (which will be the one week mark of EA!) but these fixes were just too good and too effective not to get out there right away.

They're for very key parts of Monster Crown and I wanted you all to have the best!

Here they are:

Closed Beta v1.447
----------------------

+Major rework of the programming behind the box system, try it out, it's a huge difference and MUCH more reliable. The first time you open the box your party might get shuffled up, this is to align with the new ordering and will only happen once.

+Number of farm boxes increased from 10 to 50, I know I announced we'd go to 20 but screw it, more monsters = more better! But seriously, I want to go to 100 boxes (which is 1600 monsters) but I want to keep a close eye on save file sizes. Monster Crown has incredibly unique monsters, each new creation literally has its own full new species data. The downside to this is each monster takes up more space than in other Monster Taming games. The biggest file I've seen yet is 60kb but it's worth keeping an eye on so I can always give you guys the best possible performance.

+Party size check was off by one on setting primary/secondary parent so you could empty your party, now fixed.

+Major fixes to online battling and prize setting/giving, you'll find online play a LOT more reliable and a LOT more fun now. Big thanks to HaZe for doing countless battles with me earlier today and helping me refine the process. It's a difference of night and day!

We've had some reports of graphical oddities for some users (not all) on Mac. For some the new graphics/performance dialogue helped but I apologize to those still affected for not getting back to you sooner with fixes, that will be my next focus.

Thanks Tamers! Hope you have a great night :D

Patch v1.446

Hey guys!

What a crazy week (it actually hasn't been a week yet!)

I'm very proud to say that in under 72 hours of Early Access we surpassed the success of our entire Kickstarter campaign, which blows me away and is ENTIRELY thanks to all of you.

https://www.gameshedge.com/monster-crown-beat-kickstarter-72-hours-release/

I'm truly humbled by all the appreciative words, the enthusiastic monster creations you're kind enough to share with me and of course the excellent bug reports. Together we're going to take Monster Crown to the next level!

I always joke that I just made this game because I love retro monsters and wanted an infinite feed of them sent to me, well, you're certainly making that a reality! :D

So let's get into today's patch.

Closed Beta v1.446
----------------------
+Shortened a couple of attack descriptions that were too long for the description box
+Adjusted Scarred/Desperado transition for more accurate wild encounters
+If you fight mom and get KO'd you can end up with a party with all 0 HP which can lead to a situation where you enter a battle and are unable to send out any monster, and are locked. This has been fixed (mom is kind enough to heal you now :D )
+Big improvements to item bank UI and functionality
+RNG Tamer Trades were only bringing up blue monsters of the relentless persuasion, now fixed, so have fun with more creature diversity :)
+Trading tamers can no longer create duplicate party pointers
+Must now double press to flee, some people accidentally ran from Brilliants! Can't have that!

-----------------------

While bug fixes are always the top priority I definitely wanted to get in that much requested double-press to flee feature. I know some of you missed out on Brilliants (1 in a thousand rainbow monsters) and that's just no good with how rare they are! Definitely a great suggestion guys.

Oh, also we had two people try to launch Monster Crown and it couldn't get passed the loading screen. After much investigation we discovered it was their antivirus stopping the game from loading, so if you encounter that, please ensure the application is fully allowed.

After another patch or two my attention will go toward our first content pack with more monsters and several much requested new features. It's not too far off at all :)

We surpassed Monster Crown's Kickstarter success in less than 72 hours on Steam!

Hi all!

It's Marten here, sharing an amazing milestone with you all because in less than 72 hours, Monster Crown has sold more copies in Early Access on Steam than during the entire Kickstarter campaign!

We're extremely grateful and thankful to everyone who's bought, played and reviewed Monster Crown in Early Access on Steam, because we couldn't have done it without you!

As you could've seen, there's already been 4 updates since the game released 5 days ago, so there's a LOT more coming up! Please keep an eye on the Steam page for updates ;)

For now, have fun playing Monster Crown and let us know what you think if you haven't already!

Patch 1.445 is here!

Hey Tamers!

We've got another slew of great fixes. Earlier tonight all our prior fixes moved out to the main branch so all players will be able to enjoy those, bleeding edge EA-BETA players get these fixes as of... right now!

I spent a lot of time on online battling this morning and the menu has quite a few improvements to the flow and function of it, however, I had some trouble reproducing some issues I've received reports of for online battling. I think I may know why - our servers are hosted in the state of New York (I'm in canada) and I do a lot of testing on weekend mornings when I have plenty of free time. Those hours also happen to be low traffic times in america as I'm 1.5 hours ahead of the eastern timezone.

I wrote the client and server side code and kept things very lightweight and fast but perhaps some evening latency is leading to issues. I'll continue working on this but in the meantime "Forfeit" is now available in online battles if you're trying to send a pal a monster. As you may know you can set prize monsters for online battles so some people are using it to trade before we launch that feature officially, so if you want to send a friend a monster, set it as prize, enter the battle, then forfeit. Keep in mind that online play is something that I'm still hard at work on so save before and after sending any monsters to reduce the chance that they may be lost.

Also low RAM PC friends and Mac users with a specific odd issue will find some additional graphical options in this build that i think will be of great help to them, read below for more details!

Just for fun, here's a pic of an upcoming special Epheal transformation :)

Closed Beta v1.445
----------------------
+Can view base monster stats on the info screen now
+Improved and more clear menu flow in the online battling menu
+Can now forfeit in online battles, useful if you want to just give someone a monster!
+Fixed a specific situation where you could feed your monster, or check it if you entered a battle while touching it, which could lead to getting free while in battle.
+Glitch discovered if you have a fruit in hand, enter and exit barn you can end up stuck until you drop the fruit, remedied by removing any fruit you carry during a screen transition
+Hermit's house no longer has a dual-toned roof
+Alieel does not become invisible when flashing you with light
+Maze can now be cancelled anytime with X/cancel
+Turned on graphics option dialogue on startup to help debug a PC user with a RAM issue and two Mac users that are missing sprites on their screens. PC Users with low RAM please try low quality and Mac users with missing sprites try High quality! Some odd unity bugs at play here.
+Water ripple-less areas on the overworld no longer have this issue
+HP Orb use no longer KOs monster
+Several tile issues in the desert fixed

#Please note that we want to keep the primary EA build stable so new builds will be uploaded to the EA-BETA branch for 24 hours before being moved to the main stream. Anyone can access this branch, just right-click Monster Crown in Steam, go to properties and select the EA-BETA branch to have the up to the minute, bleeding edge updates.

Thanks everyone for all your support! I'm overwhelmed with messages from people loving Monster Crown! I appreciate each and every one of you!

This build really stabilizes a lot of things so we're going to have it reviewed by our publisher tomorrow to make sure it's as stable as we feel it is and then push it out on the main branch.

My next focus? ONLINE BATTLES! Planning to put a lot of work into them this week to make them smoother and more fun.

Next Patch is out!

Hey guys,

The next patch is now live, with it come a number of adjustments and tweaks thanks to all your excellent feedback on here and on Discord. I was hoping to put a bit more time into the Notebook system so you could review your crossbreeds but there's a huge thunderstorm heading to my house and the power is already flickering, I didn't want to risk not getting this out to you guys tonight!

Be sure to let me know what you think if you opt in to the branch and get hands on! Let me know what you think of the tweaks, are they moving in the right direction? Do you feel I've over-corrected?

Tomorrow morning I'm going to devote few hours to polishing up online battling.

Thanks for all your support in our amazing second day of EA, I love hanging out with you all!

+Set FPS limit of 120 as some powerful system fellas were hitting in the 3-400s!
+Swallow water (and other healing moves) no longer heal the foe!

#Please note that we want to keep the primary EA build stable so new builds will be uploaded to the EA-BETA branch for 24 hours before being moved to the main stream. 24 hours in! Our first patch is here!

Hey folks!

Thanks for playing Monster Crown once again, what a crazy 24 hours!

I was planning to work on a patch all day today and release it later, however, I think delivering the fixes fast and hard to all of you is more important so I'm upping my morning's work now, with another on the way this afternoon and likely two more tomorrow. I'm going to work hard for all of you to make Monster Crown smoother and more bug free as quickly as possible!

Here's the details of our latest patch, right now I'm polling the forums, discord, and our bug reporting tool to assess the highest priority fixes that provide the most benefit to you. If you feel there's something higher priority that I should address ASAP feel free to @ me or reply, I want to make sure I'm working on the things that benefit you the most!

Closed Beta v1.44
----------------------
+Body Tackle nerfed to 4 power instead of 5
+Starting cash amount doubled from 150 to 300
+Raining inside much less likely to happen
+Can now forfeit
+Can no longer get free to move in the overworld during battle
+Brutus nerfed from lv23 to lv19
+Skull icons added to dangerously strong foes that can wipe you out with ease
+After mom tutorial forced monster to refollow the player properly instead of remaining stationary, this had caused a softlock for at least one player
+Killing yourself with Dark Deed and the foe at the same time no longer causes a softlock
+Pretty sure I've eliminated all ways you can have a scout going on and have that lead to:
+Breaking free and moving in the overworld during battle
+Breaking free during a chat/cutscene
+Big improvements to the world loading code, should fix the "wrong walls/collisions" issue but if you encounter it in specific areas be sure to @ me anytime.

The build will be live in about 15 minutes!

Early Access Day ONE

Hello Folks!

MASSIVE thank you to all of you that supported Monster Crown today, shared your sick creations online, and told friends/posted. Your support means the absolute world to me and things are certainly catching on fire, today definitely feels like a success, and entirely thanks to all of you!

Thank you all for the bug reports on here and on discord. I've got the rest of the weekend and Monday and Tuesday scheduled off to work hard on fixes and get out patches to make the game a lot easier and fun to play very soon. For those of you unfamiliar with our discord you'll find it here:

https://discord.gg/WwRvm9B

If you're looking to get a little primer on the breeding system, check out Gym Leader Ed's video to get you started:

[previewyoutube=DWEd_C7SlV8;leftthumb][/previewyoutube]

Some of you have discovered ??? monsters! These are wild hybrids that are one in one hundred encounters. They are naturally occuring crossbreeds, sort of like if you found a Wolf X Coyote hybrid outside right now! Because you discovered it, you get to name it!

Also, you may encounter one in a thousand *brilliant* monsters, which our like this game's shinies. You know already you can pass down colors via breeding so we had to have a pretty special color right? Briliiant monsters cycle through the rainbow.

A few people coming from Pokemon backgrounds asked some questions that I thought I'd clarify a bit:

1) Not all monsters are created equal! Two monsters at level 10 will not be equivalent if one seriously outranks the other (for example, Brutus vs. poor Rodask!)

2) The world is very dangerous, if you follow the guides in-game and stick to the road you'll be fine, but if you don't, well, you might not be! So explorers make sure you're well prepared.

Have any of you tamed a Duserp yet? Have any of you located the legendary GIGADRILE?

I look forward to hanging out with you guys all weekend!

And many of you have been raving about the mysterious dragon on our cover art, who I'm very proud to announce is a collaboration with artist Mossworm from twitter: https://twitter.com/Mossworm1

I hope all of you have a blast, and those of you that have already joined us in the beta, I'm just itching to hear what you think of the four new monsters that you'll be able to find and tame tomorrow, only the toughest of players will get hands on with GIGADRILE a brand new legendary monster that has never been seen before. If you are tamer enough to find it and obtain it, you will surely prevail in any battle.

(he's the one in the lower right)

Tell a friend and wish us luck!

Quick Beta Update

Hey guys,

time for an update, I've made the mistake of not updating the steam community for long stretches before and I'm not happy about that, so I will be making more regular updates on here :)

First off there's a new mini-dungeon, new monster and new status effect on the way for beta players soon. Ok I lied there's 3 monsters on the way but only one is completely unrevealed :D

Also we get questions about our type chart as it's quite different from Pokemon and other RPGs. Instead of being based on elements it's based on the way that monster behaves. Here's a quick rundown, but this is available in the tutorial menu in-game too.

I don't want to bog down this post with too many bugfix reports so if you want a recent overview I'd check our latest kickstarter update:

Update here

If you have found bugs yourself you'd like to submit feel free to join our Discord and use our bug tracker:

Bug Tracker

I have created an account, anon/anon to use to submit bugs without worrying about signing up. Eventually spammers will get the credentials and I'll have to set a new password but for now what's most important is making it easy for you guys to submit feedback.

On top of that I've got a bit of art to share, this is just some art I made for fun but it can help get a feel for the brutal world of Monster Crown - come prepared or risk your life!

One big addition was made to the early game plot due to feedback received during the beta so if you're ok with a few early game spoilers you can check out Peanut Dream's playthrough of that part of the beta here:

[previewyoutube=mx7h1P-HwM0;leftthumb][/previewyoutube]

This new early game vicious monster also got revealed, it was created after feedback that it could be tough to get powerful party members and level up before the first boss, and also a shortage of Vicious type monsters in the early game. I'm so happy actually we added him because he's one of my absolute favorites!

Hope you all are having a chill weekend and having a ton of fun no matter what you're playing, but also I just SSS'd King Cerberus on Dante Must Die mode yesterday so get on my level ;)

Patch 1.33 is here for Beta Players - important save file information inside!

-IMPORTANT--
The save file format has been completely revamped! It'd be easier to say you must start a new savefile, but you can indeed load your old one.

But first BACKUP YOUR SAVE FILES! grab em here:
C:\Users\YOURNAME\AppData\LocalLow\Studio Aurum\Monster Crown\Resources\Saves
Toss a copy in another directory.

Instead of pressing Z/Accept when your file is selected, if it's an old one press F1, the next time you save it'll be up-converted to the new format and you don't need F1 anymore.

Also, balance changes apply to newly generated monsters, anything you tamed from previous builds remains the same.

Some brand new Art

Just wanted to share some new official art, you'll start seeing some of our key monsters pop up in this style for articles, youtube videos, etc.

This first one shows the starters of Monster Crown, which will you pick? I tried to put as much personality into each as possible, from the grimly-mischievous Hooclaw to the stoic Dracoyle.

This second one is for an upcoming, unannounced monster that will play a big role in Monster Crown :D

Hope you enjoy and look forward to more updates on the core game soon!

The Progress so far on our Closed Beta

Hello folks!

Just wanted to share a few of the fixes we've worked on since launching our closed beta on February 24th 2020, that some of you non-backers have been able to join thanks to the sharing contests.

The changelog is below, but I'd like to share a few gifs of the additional UI work we've been doing as well. Recently I realized Monster Crown's font was really holding things back. I couldn't reduce the size of the font any further at our native resolution, so I was forced to seek out a new font.

Since implementing the new font menus will be able to be much more concise, share more info, and take up less screen real estate. This new less cluttered look will spread across the game and you'll see it in action over the next few updates. Check out these gifs and be sure to let me hear your feedback!

As you can see full move info is now available just when you need it, in battle. The icons you see on the attack description panel are first, the move's type, and secondly, if its a magical or physical move. Also, to be a little subjective, I feel like the new look and font makes the game feel much more authentic to its 90s mongame roots!

I'm presently hard at work on online battling. Some of you may remember that this worked during the kickstarter but it actually was very buggy. I've completely revamped the UI and now I'm working on squashing the last of the bugs that lead to desyncs when playing online. As long as things don't get desynced, the game seems rock-solid online and the server I've built is feeling very responsive and has handled everything I've thrown at it so far (not that it can compare to potentially hundreds of people trying to get online of course, but we'll handle that soon enough!).

Here's that changelog:

Closed Beta Fixes (Week of Feb 24 2020)

Urs - The Fallen Star - 049

Type: Unstable
Height: 2ft
Weight: 14lb
Life Expectancy: 5 yr
Strength: Soul of the Stars

Urs is a monster that is rumored to exist, described in several ancient books of dubious origin that have been found on Crown Island. The books tell of past events in detail that seem to contradict the known history of mankind. The authors remain unknown but seem to have collaborated, perhaps codifying some deeper meaning beyond the literal.

Each of these books however touch on "the gift" of Urs. Urs is said to spend its days behaving as any typical monster would, foraging for food, seeking shelter and leaving markings in the hope of locating others of its kind. While the books seem to describe Urs in different ages, apparently the creature "shall never find kin" and is stranded "very far from home".

By far the most remarkable feature of Urs however is how it reacts when attacked. Urs's fur will begin to glow, and the stars will dim and strobe. Urs will seemingly pull energy from the heavens, enveloping itself "in the soul of a star". While in this state Urs's power multiplies, giving it more than enough power to protect itself from any foe, a foe which is said to be now dazed from "an unreal sky above".

Will Urs make your team?

Panipillr - The Anxiety Incarnate - 128

Type: Unstable
Height: 6ft 3in
Weight: 780lbs
Life Expectancy: 80 yr
Strength: Worried Energy

There is one Panipillr

Little is known about this monster, or what will become of it. Therefore, one must pay close attention to learn anything about it at all!

Panipillr seems to have hatched from an egg very long ago. Based on the husk of the discarded egg, Panipillr emerged at roughly its current size and weight, and has not left the location of its birth - a secluded cave tucked away in a secret location, for many decades, perhaps even centuries.

Anyone approaching Panipillr can sense the immense energy building within it. Fluctuations and increases of energy can be felt by anyone within 50 feet of this monster, and sudden spikes coincide with Panipillr's frantic, worried nature becoming even more dramatic. It never sleeps and seems to be in a constant state of dread. It's theorized that Panipillr can feel the massive energy building as well and, not understanding the nature of its own body, feels an ever increasing dread at all times.

Will Panipillr make your team?

Monster of the Week! Vult

Check out our latest Monster of the Week!

Type: Will
Height: 4ft 6in
Weight: 148lbs
Life Expectancy: 30 yr
Strength: Mega Volt Power

Tucked away deep in an underground facility, Vult is rarely seen by outsiders. No records of the monster exist before recent times, seemingly having sprung forth from the stray bolts of an overwhelming source of electrical power.

This monster is quite slow but can unleash a thunderous surge of lightning. They seem to have poor eyesight. As they slither they drag their heavy heads along the ground lazily. Tamers are advised to resist leaning on Vult unnecessarily - while a rare occurrence, the energy stored deep within them can travel through a human and diffuse into the ground unexpectedly, a feat Vult seems to be unable to control consciously. This seems to happen less frequently as they age.

Vult do not appear to age physically, but instead grow weak or strong depending on the frequency with which they are commanded to let loose power.

Will Vult make your team?

Monster Storytelling

A few people asked me to explain what exactly I meant, or what had me so excited!

Well have you ever played and learned a new TCG game? I know I have, and at first, well, I have to pick up my opponent's every card and read it carefully. "Oh! wow, turns out I really am as screwed as he said! pls ban or I kick and scream.", etc....

Private Beta Update

Hello Tamers!

Tomorrow (Friday, March 8th) we'll be launching our Monster Crown Private Beta to the Monster Designer tier backers! The Beta covers the first two chapters of the game.

The game is being tested & polished extensively, but we're looking for some hands-on time from fans to confirm we're on the right track and the game feels and is as fun as it can be.

This is a big part of the reason there's no release date yet! Player feedback will be used to determine how close we are and if additional work must be done to make the game fun, fair and balanced.

We're starting with the Kickstarter Monster Designers and, based on the results and feedback determine if and how we'll extend this group to more Monster Tamers and possibly add additional chapters of the game to the Beta for your enjoyment.

Monster of the Week! Roedra

Type: Unstable
Height: 3ft 2in
Weight: 55lb
Life Expectancy: 22yr
Strength: Lightning Fast Movement

Roedra are electricity-based river serpents. Deceptively built like a towering sea serpent, this small fry whips through the streams and rivers of Crown Island while snapping down on fish and dazzling those that it misses with a barrage of sparks.

Roedra feed exclusively on fish, however, they find Humans, especially those they see as direct competition (for example, fishermen) as tremendous nuisances. It's not unusual to find these ankle-biters lunging at your feet or hissing from the rapids.

Feeding on fatty, red fish Roedra generally don't pose much of a threat, however, in times of high humidity and thunderstorms an amazing phenomena occurs. Roedra becomes able to swim freely in water and air alike, creating a rude surprise for those that live near their territory. Luckily Roedra has a glaring weak point - hammering the horn on its head will forever render it unable to use electrical powers or leave the waters ever again.

Will Roedra make your team?
