Upcoming Event and New Item

Evil things creep and crawl in deep, winding tunnels below the earth. Descend into darkness and burn away the shadows with a new item: the Torch! Play through the limited-time event Fangs in the Dark from April 25 to May 5 and overcome the vile beasts lurking in the dark.



Fangs in the Dark will be live from April 25. Fangs in the Dark is a repeatable event and will return on a seasonal basis.

"Towering Defenses" In-Game Event

Armor up, Stoneheads- The Towering Defenses Event is happening now!



From February 24th to March 5th,, Stone Story RPG will be running an in-game event to coincide with the addition of the Towering Shield. Complete runs in the Temple to earn this extra loot.

During this event, you'll have the opportunity to earn Prismatic Cosmetics. Prismatics can be obtained from Prismatic Treasures or Golden Treasures. Progress far enough in the Towering Shield Event to obtain a Prismatic Towering Shield, along with additional rewards!

Loot Event and Preview of Upcoming Content

[h2]New Item and Upcoming Event[/h2]

Introducing a new craftable basic item: the Towering Shield! This hefty addition to your arsenal will slow you down but bulk up your defenses. Craft this new item and put it to the test in the upcoming Towering Shield Event, taking place from February 22nd to March 3rd.

But thats not all! In this event well also debut Prismatic Cosmetics, a new type of skin available for all equippable items, along with some other small surprises for the event.

SSRPG's Next Chapter and Animated Trailer Previews[/h2]

Weve talked about how players will visit the floating city of Acropolis in an upcoming update to the main game.

Weve worked with a concept artist to draft up a design for The University, where players will find the halls of knowledge have been transformed into battlegrounds. Acropolis forces have pushed into the University, dead-set on capturing the last holdout who protects Leuces Blossom in the library.



Something else wed like to share with you all is that were working on an animated trailer for Stone Story RPG! Weve partnered with a talented animator, and weve got some exciting stuff cooking.

A sleeping dragon awakens- The Nagaraja 2x Loot Event is happening now!

From February 1 to February 11, Stone Story RPG will be running an in-game 2x Loot Event on all Nagaraja kills. Complete runs in the Temple to earn this extra loot.

Nagaraja is also sporting an all-new look! For the duration of the event, Nagaraja will take on the form of a slithering sky serpent.

Usher in the Year of the Dragon with Stone Story RPG! From February 1 to February 11, face the almighty serpent in his Temple lair for double loot drops. But it wont be Nagaraja you encounter this time around

The team is hard at work on getting new content developed and in-game. In late February, well be adding an all new craftable item, the Towering Shield, followed by more quests and in-game events.

The Body of Scotty has been working hard in the Skeleton Chest Factory, but in order to grow his operation he needs help. Reunite Scotty with his body and help the Factory reach its full potential!

Help the estranged limbs overcome their differences and fall Head Over Heels for each other once again.

Enter the skeleton chest factory and meet the Body of Scotty, an ambitious boney fellow who dreams of creating a better space for workers before they lose their heads (quite literally) for the chest-making process.

The Body of Scotty, lacking a head, requests your help in finding his dear old head, Scotty. Embark on this emotional quest and discover the story of two friends seeking reconciliation. The Dark World awaits your friendly touch!

StoneJam 6 Results and Upcoming Community Event

We are thrilled to have had so many people participate in the most recent StoneJam! StoneJam 6 absolutely blew us away. The sheer volume and creativity from our community is nothing short of astounding. Utility scripts, animated cosmetics, and even Tetris are just a few of the many entries submitted by players!

Your creativity and dedication have once again exceeded our expectations, and we are delighted to share some highlights and express our gratitude for your incredible contributions.

[h3]StoneJam 6 Results[/h3]

StoneJam 6 was rather overwhelming for us on the SSRPG team!

To give some reference, StoneJam 5 had around a dozen submissions. StoneJam 6, on the other hand, clocked in at a whopping 71 submissions. We were impressed at the huge range of entries, like new minigames, cosmetics, and even a fully-functional painting tool!

Its taken some time for us to sort things out, especially as we continue development on other parts of the game. Were currently working with submission authors and will soon feature StoneJam 6 entries as official scripts in-game.

In the meantime, join us on the Discord server next Saturday, November 25th, where well be hosting a community event!

Well take a look at some StoneJam 6 submissions and talk about upcoming plans for the project, particularly in ways we can better integrate the community into the game (like leaderboards, story content, and more).

Looking Ahead[/h3]

As mentioned earlier, Stone Story RPGs development continues onwards. Pre-production for Part 2 and Part 3 have begun, which will take players to Acropolis and beyond.

Soon, players can look forward to a new Legend quest: Head Over Heels. An employee of the Skeleton Chest Factory has reached out with a curious request for the Stonehead What could be in store at this warehouse of bones?

[h2]What is StoneJam about?[/h2]

StoneJam was conceived as a way to experiment with Stonescript, a scripting language built directly into Stone Story RPG. Easy to use yet powerful, scripts can be as simple as automating potions if your health gets low, optimizing combat to superhuman levels, or even creating new cosmetics and UI features!

With each new update we continue to expand what's possible with Stonescript. We want to see what YOU can create! Some of the projects that people have made with Stonescript include:


  • Minigames
  • Pets and cosmetics
  • Custom UI elements (e.g. healthbars, ability timers)
  • ASCII-art and animations
  • and more!

Collaborations between participants are more than welcome (and in fact encouraged).

Instructions in the Mind Stone* are written in Stonescript, a minimalist language designed for use by everyone. If you dont want to script, use the Mind Stone as your canvas to create ASCII art!

*(Note: Stonescript features are unlocked part-way through playing the game. If youre new to scripting or need a quick refresher, check out this tutorial weve written up: https://stonestoryrpg.com/stonescript/intro_tutorial.html)

Yes!

While working with Stonescript on mobile may be a bit more challenging, there are ways that you as a mobile player can participate in StoneJam.

We recommend working with cosmetics as the easiest way to get into mobile scripting. For the more ambitious users, it is still possible to work with UI, Games, and other types of StoneScript creations!

StoneJam is a chance for our community to work together and bring StoneScript to its limits. All participants in StoneJam will earn a commemorative shiny treasure, and our favorite submissions will be invited to be an official addition to the game.

Were also excited to bring back Bounties!

Bounties are a way for us to collaborate with and challenge our community. Players can complete specific projects to earn larger rewards, including Steam Wallet funds, in-game items, and development credits for Stone Story RPG.

StoneJam 6 will be hosted on our Discord.

To participate in the jam:

  • Visit our Discord server
  • Go to the #commands channel and type !stonejam
  • Congratulations, you now have the @stonejam role! With this youll be able to see the StoneJam Discord channels
  • Participate via the Discord event channels:
  • #stonejam6-discuss - StoneJam discussion chat
  • #stonejam6-submit - Entry submissions

    [h2]How do I submit my StoneJam entry?[/h2]
    Submission rules:
  • Inside your scripts, at the beginning of each file include:

    • Name/nickname of author or multiple names if multiple authors
    • Version number of the script
    • Instructions on how to use it

  • Drop your script into #stonejam5-submit, along with screenshots and/or gifs of your entry in action.
  • If a single entry involves multiple interdependent scripts, put them into a zip.
  • Submit different entries separately.
  • You can submit scripts created prior to the jam, as long as the jam week is used for meaningfully improving them.

    New Weapon Recipe: Heavy Hammer

    Hope youve all had a fun launch week, Stoneheads!

    Today were bringing the first of many planned updates to Stone Story RPG.

    Smashing its way into Stone Story is a new weapon recipe: the Heavy Hammer. A hefty tool, the Heavy Hammer packs a punch and smashes through enemy defenses with ease. Remember though: while it can swing wide and hit hard, the Heavy Hammer is slower than its one-handed counterpart.



    From now until August 7th, players will have a chance to earn a Unique Golden Skin for the Heavy Hammer. Obtain the skin by participating in the Challenge Event, which can be started by discovering the recipe and crafting a Heavy Hammer.

    You also have the opportunity to earn a more powerful reward! Players can upgrade their event treasure by completing additional milestones before the event ends on the 7th.

    Hammer Time Update - 3.38.1

    [h2]Stone Story RPG Leaving Early Access July 27[/h2]

    After 9 long years of development and 4 years of Early Access, the team is ready to fully launch Stone Story RPG! A lot of work has gone into making this game, and we're thankful for each and every player that has supported the game along the way.

    We've got quite a few plans in store on the road to launch, and we hope you'll join us for the ride!

    [h2]Referral System, Golden Chests, and New Cosmetics[/h2]

    We're excited to bring new items to add to your in-game collections! This update introduces new "Golden" cosmetics for your gear.



    Golden items come in sets based around Lost Item skins. Each set consists of 5 Golden items; collect all 5 and you earn the corresponding Golden Lost Item!



    These lustrous item skins can be found in Golden Chests, which are obtained in-game through a variety of ways.

    One such way to claim a Golden Chest is to make use of the new Referral System!

    The Referral System is available in-game after you have completed any weekly quest on your Quest Stone (Weekly Quests are obtained through the Legend quest, "Remnants of Five").

    Access Referrals via the Quest Stone, copy the code shown on-screen, and share it with a friend. When they redeem it in-game, both of you will earn a Golden Chest!

    Weve come a long way together, haven't we Stoneheads?

    Back in 2019, we had a clear vision for Stone Story RPG. Much has changed in the past few years, but we continue to drive the project forward with those original goals. That said, its become increasingly difficult to to survive in gaming, let alone as an indie developer.

    Its with that context that we ask for your understanding as we plan to increase the price of Stone Story RPG from $19.99 USD to $29.99 USD upon transitioning out of Early Access.

    That said, we do have a price-free alternative!

    [h2]Stone Story RPG is Coming to Mobile[/h2]

    Stone Story RPG will be free-to-play and globally available for Android and iOS on July 27th!

    The mobile port of the game will have near identical content to the PC version and will be F2P. Some systems and functions have been added for use on mobile, but for players looking to have the full SSRPG experience, this version will be functionally the same.

    A key difference in the mobile build is that some of the shop prices will be different, but if you have played Stone Story RPG on PC then you will be able to transfer your progress back and forth across platforms.

    We hope that you all look forward to its release!

    The price change will take effect upon exiting Early Access. Until then, be sure to pick the game up while it's discounted.

    [h2]Why the Price Change?[/h2]

    The team has gone back and forth on this, as we understand that price is a sensitive issue when it comes to video games. At the end of the day, we need to be realistic about the cost it takes to create a product like a game.

    The passion behind the project has carried it to heights we never thought possible. Having people across the world enjoy our game has been an absolute highlight in all of our careers. After all, who are we making games for if not for the players?

    But passion can only go so far when we need to balance that out with development costs. Its taken the team a lot to create Stone Story RPG, both in terms of time and money. When you look at SSRPG as a product on its own, its done great! Were exceedingly happy with the critical and commercial response its gained over the past few years.

    However, we cant ignore the real human cost that went into making the game and continues to go into it. When you factor in the time and work of the talented, hard-working people behind the scenes, were actually losing money.

    So, to keep the team going, even beyond Stone Story RPG, weve determined that raising the price was the best solution.

    This was always going to be a hard message to push out, and we can only ask for your understanding and patience as we lay the final pieces down on this chapter of our teams work with Stone Story RPG.

    [h2]Stone Story RPG's Hamartia Event Returns[/h2]

    An odd wind blows once again-- Stone Story RPGs Hamartia Event returns!

    From now until Friday, May 19th, you have a chance to earn a shiny treasure!


    The Hamartia Event operates on a milestone format: In order to upgrade your reward, you must defeat bosses and add those victories to the counter.

    For the Hamartia Challenge, the games bosses will gain new resistances (while some will gain new weaknesses). Use the Sight Stone to aid you, but dont get too comfortable: every day at noon (local time) these attributes change.

    Read below to see what this new set of challenges entails.



    While boss immunities are random each day, they are the same for all players. Collaborate with others on the Steam community forums or the official Discord server to efficiently tackle these goals and ensure that a valuable shiny treasure will be yours!

    For the duration of the event, rerolling enchantments will cost 90% less Ki. Use this opportunity to experiment with each new day of rotating boss resistances.

    Higher tiered rewards will raise the threshold on the milestone requirements. At the end of the event, each player will receive their own shiny treasure. These shiny treasures will give players a random shiny item they dont already own, in addition to other mysterious rewards...

    PC & Mobile Unification - Update 3.27.2

    After completing the game's port to mobile we've unified the PC and mobile code bases into a single one. This update is the result of that union, bringing over many of the architectural changes and optimizations needed for mobile. As we interacted with mobile players and gathered their feedback, many other improvements and bug fixes made their way into the game and are also part of this massive update.

    This takes us closer to our next major goal: Exit from early access and full global release. More info coming soon.

    Due to the magnitude of this update (the entire game engine has been touched in some way) as well as the importance of our upcoming global release, please let us know if you see anything weird that could be a new bug.

    - Remnants of Five: Fixed case where you could complete the quest during a 2x Ki event and earn 40 crystals instead of 20. This situation could risk the delicate balance in the FTUE design.
    - Croaked: Fixed a UX issue after feeding Kevin. If the Ouroboros screen appeared and you pressed the pause button, it would send you to Locations instead of Quests screen.

    Improvements
    - Greatly reduced the size of save files. The game will automatically rework your file upon next save.
    - Swapped the drop order of Ouroboros and Quest Stone.
    - Offline farming now gives guaranteed minimum loot if the selected difficulty is lower than the highest unlocked difficulty for the location.
    - Progress now saves after opening all treasures, exiting the Mushroom Shop, completing a Legend quest or crafting anything on the Anvil.
    - The Mind Stone can now be powered on/off from the item details popup.
    - Polished the cinematic when approaching the Mushroom Shop for the first time.
    - Lowered the requirements to upgrade Star Stone for the first time.
    - Changed the border color of button [Claim Reward] in daily quests to green.

    Balance
    - Increased the Ki Crystal rewards for completing R&D goals.
    - Increased Hatchet damage to Xyloalgia from +2 to +3.
    - Minor change to the enchantment drop rates for Omega treasures.
    - Minor change to loot drop tables, so total enchantment rates are the same.

    Misc
    - Engine upgraded to version 2021.3.18
    - Added a limit to the number of save files that can be created.
    - All locations now have specific sorted positions in the Locations screen, regardless of the order in which they were unlocked.
    - Reworked the loading architecture.
    - FTUE: Rocky Plateau is now disabled until workstation is completed.
    - Removed progress saving when the application becomes paused by the OS.
    - Added unique ID to save files.
    - When entering your character's name, empty space at the beginning or at the end are now deleted.
    - Minor CPU optimizations to Stonescript.
    - Added proper handling of UTF-8 "BOM" encoding when importing scripts.

    Bugs
    - Fixed a critical bug where save file sizes could balloon out of control, due to multiple copies of offline farming stats.
    - Fixed critical issue where the game could get stuck with a blank Locations screen, in the very early game.
    - Fixed crashes that could happen when talking to the sweeper NPC in Temple.
    - Fixed a crash when playing for the first time.
    - Fixed a crash when pressing the side navigation buttons very quickly.
    - Fixed a bug where the Locations container would sometimes scroll to the top.
    - Fixed one of Dysangelo's help texts that was not localized correctly.
    - Fixed Stonescript errors when box drawing with custom user-defined styles.
    - Fixed Stonescript bug where some UI component properties were not resetting when recycled.
    - Eliminated a few rare cases of players being stuck with no input.
    - Fixed a rare crash in shops when there's pending treasures to open.
    - Fixed a bug where fast-clicking on buttons that are bleeding off their parent dialog windows would close the dialog instead of triggering the button.
    - Fixed bugs in draw.GetSymbol() and canvas.Get() where some glyphs would return incorrectly.
    - Fixed a legacy bug where it was possible to win a location star and not save progress properly.

    Devteam Update

    Work has steadily progressed on a variety of projects behind the scenes! We take pride in the independence and autonomy that we have gained through self-publishing. What that does mean, though, is really good work can take a really long time!

    We appreciate all the fans and players that have supported us over the years. Soon well be ready to shed the title of Early Access! Theres a few important things wed like to share as we head into the full release.

    Firstly, the mobile port of Stone Story RPG is nearly ready with a targeted launch later this year. The Android version is all set and iOS is coming along nicely. Right now were polishing features unique to the mobile build that will make the user experience more cohesive and enjoyable.

    The mobile port will also mark the full release of Stone Story RPG! Weve got a host of updates and content to celebrate with, so we hope you look forward to it.

    Its been a few weeks since we dropped The Initiate, Stone Story RPGs 11th Legend. If youve been following our posts, you may recall that we originally said that the game would get 16 Legends.

    and youd be correct! Weve still got some Legends that have been sitting on the backburner. Theyre mostly done, we just need to finalize implementation of them in-game. We appreciate your patience as our team works on getting more content added.

    Its been quite a juggling act on our end, because were not just working on new content; preparations for the Stone Story mobile port are underway! Were getting the team together and discussing various factors that will affect work on mobile, including marketing strategy, budget planning, mobile player UX, and much more.

    Following in the footsteps of her fellow bosses, Bolesh brings some footsteps of her own!

    From now until April 18th, Stone Story RPG will be running a 2x Loot Event. Complete runs in the Caves of Fear to earn this extra loot.

    This time around, however, were doing something different: Well be increasing the average quality of loot that drops, rather than increasing the average quantity of loot drops. This way, the drops are still random, but the statistical distribution of treasure quality is weighted higher.

    What does this practically mean for you? We expect the event to allow for better treasure types, such as Deltas and Omegas, to appear twice as frequently. Doesnt sound like too bad of a deal, huh?

    StoneJam was originally conceived as a way for our community to engage more deeply with Stone Story RPG. As the game grew, so did Stonescript and the ways that players could use it. Every new StoneJam has been an opportunity to experiment and push the boundaries of what is possible with a bit of technical knowledge and a LOT of creativity.

    [h2]What is StoneJam about?[/h2]
    StoneJam was conceived as a way to experiment with Stonescript, a robust scripting language built directly into Stone Story RPG. Easy to use yet powerful, scripts can be as simple as automating potions if your health gets low, optimizing combat to superhuman levels, or even creating new cosmetics and UI features!

    Some of the projects that people have made with Stonescript include:


    • Minigames
    • Combat scripts
    • Pets and cosmetics
    • Custom UI elements (e.g. healthbars, ability timers)
    • ASCII-art and animations

    Collaborations between participants are more than welcome (and in fact encouraged).

    Instructions are entered into the Mind Stone* with Stonescript, a minimalist language designed for use by everyone. If you dont want to script, use the Mind Stone as your canvas to create ASCII art!

    *Note: Stonescript features are unlocked part-way through playing the game. If youre new to scripting or need a quick refresher, check out this tutorial weve written up.

    StoneJam is a chance for our community to work together and bring StoneScript to its limits. All participants in StoneJam will earn a commemorative shiny treasure, and our favorite submissions will be invited to be an official addition to the game.

    Bounties are a way for us to collaborate with and challenge our community. Players can complete specific projects to earn larger rewards, including Steam Wallet funds, in-game items, and development credits for Stone Story RPG.

    This patch introduces a new system for building complex and performant user interfaces within StoneScript (as well as a few functions for the top-level UI namespace).

    [h2]Researching & Developing the R&D Book[/h2]

    Recently we added the R&D Book to Stone Story RPG, a compendium that encourages players to experiment with Lost Items to earn enchanted rewards, and we'd like to talk about how we got around to making it.



    As weve developed the game, weve launched events to accompany new Legends, experiment with mechanics, and celebrate the game with our community. Its that same community that continually helps us make Stone Story the best it can be!

    The R&D Book is an important step in creating a complete experience for as many players as possible. The core idea was to create a system that would scale with our pace of development. Events have been a great way to challenge players and keep things fresh with content updates through Early Access, but we lacked a way to make use of them outside of an event's original run. Thats where our handy dandy book comes in.

    We added the R&D Book to keep record of limited events and allow players to complete ones that they might have missed. This way, even new players can enjoy content without feeling like theyve missed out on past events!



    [h2]Whats Coming Next[/h2]

    Though were still cranking away at the mobile port, were doing our best to keep things active for our community and have plenty of stuff coming down the pipeline.

    Like quests! Weve got 4 more Legends in the works alongside 3 new Lost Items (such as the Crusader Shield below) and more Challenge Events, but everything requires time to reach a good state of polish. Thank you for your patience as we try to juggle ports, content, and other crazy stuff on our end.



    Meanwhile, if you want a chance to flex your Stonescript skills, get ready for the return of StoneJam! Our community has submitted so many cool and creative scripts in the past and we cant wait to see what people come up with this time.

    Focusing Development Priorities[/h2]
    If youve been following the game since we released into Early Access (or even before!), youve seen just how much this game and its community have grown.

    Stone Story RPG began with a handful of wild ideas, ideas that youve seen become reality in things like The Quest Update, harder difficulties, and Lost Items.

    If youve followed us for some time, youre also aware of just how much we like to plan ahead! To that end, the SSRPG team will soon be redirecting development resources towards launching mobile.

    What does this mean for Quests and other in-game content? Well, for starters it means that this is an opportunity for us to scale development up even further!

    The rough plan now is to finish development and exit EA with console launches. The revenue gained from this will go towards funding mobile development and, should things go according to plan, allow us to push out Green Difficulty and other new in-game content!

    Weve spent a lot of time thinking about the best way to move forward for both the team and our community. We hope to have your support in the coming new year and look forward to everything 2022 has in store for Stone Story RPG!

    The wicked Cult of Nagaraja is shrouded in secrets, their foul deeds carried out within the serpentine depths of The Temple. To become a Cultist of Nagraja is to surrender your entire being to the path of the Great Worm.

    Many such aspirants who seek to curry the beasts favor take on harrowing trials to prove themselves worthy enough.

    Should you have enough courage and luck, you may be able to endure the perils of The Initiate.

    As fortune would have it, you come across a cultist initiate in your travels. She is less than forthcoming with information, however.

    If youre to learn more about this mysterious cult, shes your best chance.

    "The Initiate" is the seventh Quest Drop of the update and will be playable in Stone Story RPG beginning March 18th!

    Spring Loot Event is Now Live

    Long time no see, Stoneheads.

    We emerge from our winter hibernation to bring you spring tidings and loot!

    From now until March 15th, Stone Story RPG will be running a 20% off sale and a 2x Loot Event.

    Complete runs in the Mushroom Forest to earn this extra loot (which also includes 2x Lost Item drops).




    State of Development and Mobile Version


    When we first launched the Quest Update, the plan was to push out sixteen Legend quests. Thus far weve released twelve unique adventures that have taken players from homey hot springs to frantic skeleton factories!

    We still have four legends currently in-development; however, after reevaluating development priorities we will be shifting resources to other parts of the project.

    Our current focus is to make Stone Story RPG ready for other platforms, particularly mobile.

    We had set milestones for the Quest Update and managed to exceed them, which has encouraged us to speed up mobile design. We feel confident about the game and want to focus now on bringing it to as wide of an audience as possible.

    The four remaining Legends are fully designed and most are implemented, but they still require polish. Theres quite a lot to sort out, as each Legend will also introduce three new Lost Items alongside three new Challenge Events.

    But wait, dont forget- theres another Lost Item coming right around the corner!



    Upcoming Legend: The Initiate

    In the next Legend, The Initiate, youll be delving deeper into the mysteries behind the Temple and its cultists.

    But why merely look?

    Embrace Nagaraja and take the great Great Worms power for yourself!

    Designing an ASCII World - A look at SSRPG's creative process

    Hello Stone Story RPG friends!

    We hope youre enjoying the event. Its certainly been very challenging, even for the most experienced of adventurers!

    Poena was a great opportunity for us to expand upon the games world and introduce an interesting new mechanic.

    [h2]Stone Story RPG's World Design[/h2]

    The process to building Poena is the same used for the rest of the games world design. Various elements from pop culture and mythology fill a bucket that, sometimes, will have ideas that line up together and work well naturally.

    Take for example Nagaraja, the boss of the Temple location. Nagaraja is constructed from several such pop cultural and mythological building blocks: giant fantasy worms from series like Dune and Star Wars perfectly aligned with the venomous nature of the Serpent King in Hindu myth.



    But it doesnt stop there!

    The Temple itself is heavily based on the Red Temple from 1993s Prince of Persia 2. The reveal of the Red Temple can be seen in the way the Temple is revealed in Stone Story RPG: a cinematic landscape approach towards a mysterious towering structure.

    Funnily enough, the Temple and Nagaraja developed independently of each other until the pieces suddenly fit and made sense: giant worms are traditionally a desert character so why not fit Nagaraja into the Temples theming?

    There are countless other examples of this design philosophy at work in the game, but the general idea is that sometimes theres a gap in Stone Story RPGs design and its our work to fill it.

    [h2]Creating Poena[/h2]

    Poena is the most recent product of this design. Lore-wise, we already had a solid base to work from: Xyloalgia is the corrupted remains of Leuce (whose positive aspects remained in Acropolis as a white tree). Thus, if Leuce has been considered a female character then it follows that Xyloalgia would as well!



    Expanding upon this, Xyloalgias gender reveal took its lead from how Metroid revealed Samus gender. We wanted the moment of revelation to have impact, but the initial sketches felt a bit weak. Nothing that fit the personality of the character.

    This was where Polyducks came in. Polyducks took the idea of Poena and crafted her in a deliberate depiction of the female form twisted by corruption. Poena embodies the spirit of vengeance and punishment. The dark and dirty core of retribution lying deep within Xyloalgia.

    Its her very character that also informs how she works mechanically in a boss fight. The Mirror debuff mechanics underscore Poenas very nature: When youre fighting her, youre fighting the negative parts of Leuce.

    Amidst the buzzing beetles and twisted trees, a specter of vengeance clings to the air. Youve traveled these paths before, but something is different

    New Xyloalgia Boss Phase: Poena, Mistress of Punishment[/h2]

    Where Xyloalgia once stood, a wicked figure now hunches atop a rough-hewn stump. Dirty, matted locks twist to reveal malevolent glowing eyes and razor-sharp teeth.

    An unsettling feeling washes over you. Anger, vengeance, and retribution: a tide of aggression stems forth from this creature, spilling forth onto the canyon floor.

    Almost as if you could hear the creak of aged bones, the monster raises back an unnaturally long arm and swings.

    Whoever they are, whatever this is, one thing is for certain: They cannot be reasoned with and must be unmade.




    On Dec. 17, were adding a new boss character to Stone Story RPG: Poena, Mistress of Punishment!

    Poena brings her terrifying presence to the game as a Phase 2 in the Xyloalgia fight. Crafty adventurers would do well to carefully consider their strategy when facing the Mistress of Punishment.*

    *Poena is available only in Cyan difficulty (or higher) in Deadwood Canyon.

    Swift action means a swift death with the Mirror mechanic: any debuff inflicted upon Poena will be reflected back to its source.

    To accompany this update, were also:


    • Running a 2x Loot Event with Poena until Dec. 24
    • Adding a hidden achievement for the new boss fight!

    Like the Mushroom Shop, this new store offers items that players can purchase to aid them in their adventures.

    However, the Hotspring Shop has a more premium stock! Whether its Lost Items, enchantments, or Name Tags, use your hard-earned Ki to obtain powerful new additions to your inventory.

    Starting today, were running a Double-Ki Weekend!

    From now until Sunday, earn twice the Ki from all sources (this includes both @ and Crystals).

    • Defeating enemies
    • Basic Ki can also be earned from unmaking items
    • Daily Crystal from the Hotspring Shop
    • The Weekly Challenge Crystal Treasure

    [h2]Event System Tweaks[/h2]

    Though of the focus over the past few months has been centered around the Quest Update, the team has also been tweaking how events work. We've invested time to make sure that the event system is robust and expandable.

    Events are an important way for our community to engage and collaborate with one another. After all, two ASCII brains are better than one!

    In order to improve the experience, we've restructured how event goals are presented (such as with Wild Ride and Titan's Trial). The new system will allow players who missed an event to still get rewards!

    There's a fine line to balance between FOMO and fun. We never want our players to feel like we've cheated them or taken advantage of their playtime. This is why all events have the opportunity to return in some shape or form and why we wanted to address the goals and rewards.

    On a design level, goals ARE the reward! Think of it like this:

  • New player starts the game
  • Over time they unlock a new Legend
  • This new Legend gives them loot
  • This loot has goals attached to it

    Each step of the way, we want you to be engaged. Goals are able to fill in space and give the Quests more room to breathe.

    Figuring this out has been a fun and challenging process! Huge thanks to all our community members for playing the game and providing valuable insight.

    Stone Story RPG adds its newest Legend, Titanic Accord! After crashing Pallas party in "Mr. Pallas Wild Ride", you find yourself back in the Haunted Halls coming face-to-face with the towering titan himself. He makes a proposition: take his sword and slay the cursed spider that took his skin!

    As part of the new Quest, Stone Story RPG will also be running its fifth Challenge Event, Titans Trial - Reboot, from November 2nd to November 9th. All players who participate in this event will receive the Blade of the Fallen God, a powerful Lost Item* that further deepens your arsenal.

    Techniques and technology have come a long way from Rogue, the groundbreaking seminal 1980 dungeon crawler. Stone Story RPG sits at the crossroads of new and old, a confluence of retro and modern gaming. Nowhere is this more evident than in the game's animation style.

    The stark minimalism of black and white ASCII art strikes just as clearly as when Rogue first released:



    In developing Stone Story RPG we wanted to stretch the limits of this style. Using a combination of traditional animation techniques and clever Unity tricks, ASCII art can work just like pixel art!

    Much of the process behind ASCII animation is the same as with any other medium:


    • Find references
    • Establish keyframes
    • Determine length of each animation
    • Go frame by frame and fill the inbetweens

    Letters, numbers, and even Unicode symbols all work together to evoke an ethereal feel, something borne out of the era of DOS computers and floppy disks.

    Along with this Legend, Stone Story RPG will also be adding a new shop, the Hotspring Shop, that uses a resource many of you have already been saving up: Ki Crystals!*

    *You can find more details about Ki Crystal economy further down in the post

    The Hotspring Shop will stock rare and hard to find items that players can purchase with their crystal currency. The inventory found here is of much higher quality than will be found in the Mushroom Shop; intrepid adventurers can expect to purchase valuable loot like nametags, legendary enchantments, and even Lost Items!



    Since the items in the Hotspring Shop will be of greater quality, the way the Ki Crystal economy works will be a bit different. Crystals, however, can be obtained both through playing the game, completing weekly quests, and finding them in Delta treasures.

    But thats not all: this content patch also introduces Weekly Quests! Each week youll get a new set of objectives that, upon completion, will provide you with a Crystal Treasure.

    [h2]Shop Mechanics and Game Economy (design talk ahead!)[/h2]
    While we want to make use of certain idle/mobile mechanics, PC players can rest assured that we have no intentions of adding microtransactions to the desktop client.

    We do have a mobile port with monetization in mind further down the line, but we took what was necessary for mobile (e.g. the Ki Crystal shop) and instead of excluding it from the PC, we've reframed it.

    Not as a monetization tool, but as an engaging mechanic; formatted for a different purpose, with different balance values, that we hope adds to the game's fun.



    As discussed in a previous post, Stone Story RPG is a metrics-driven project. This means that we base many of our design choices around trends and statistics that we notice in how players progress through the game.

    Changes are made in order to engage players through the 1st day of playing to the 7th day to the 30th day (the D1 > D7 > D30 funnel).

    Major factors in this design are shop mechanics. Functionally, they are a way to give players options: the option to brute force a challenge, the option to farm and stockpile, the option to choose how they progress.



    In Stone Story RPG we want players to have room to experiment and play around. The Mushroom Shop does that for the early-mid game; it gives you a way to buy items like runes to overcome a difficult combat encounter that you might not have figured out the optimal solution for yet.

    The Ki Crystal shop is a way for us to add this kind of flexibility to the mid-late game, going hand-in-hand with Quests and their respective rewards.

    Were still experimenting with how these systems and mechanics work in tandem with each other, which is where the Quest Update comes into play. Slowly, but surely, were filling Stone Story RPGs design out and bringing it one step closer to the full vision we have in mind.

    Hello Stonefriends!

    We hope youve enjoyed the Quest Update so far. Dealing with squatting Stoneheads and frenetic frogs is no joke!

    Last Friday, we added Mr. Pallas Wild Ride, the first of many Legends to come. The Wild Ride Challenge Event will continue for a few more days (ending on October 10th), so youve still got a bit of time to complete your goals and your reward.*

    Since full completion requires use of the Mind Stone, you can consult our Discord community or see the Wild Ride forum post should you run into any problems finishing the event.

    *All loot gained through events can still be obtained in-game. Events may also repeat in the future.

    A couple weeks ago, we hosted our fourth StoneJam, an event where community members gathered to create custom content using the in-game scripting language, Stonescript.

    We received all sorts of neat creations, including cosmetics, minigames, pets, and UI tools! Weve put together a video where we look at each submission, so you can see what kinds of projects people worked on:

    We've got more Legends to come in the following weeks (be on the lookout next week for "Remnants of Five"!). We plan to add a total of 16 Legends: full-scale adventures featuring unique narrative experiences.



    Everything that gets added in the Quest Update further builds out Stone Story RPG as a whole. More events that will repeat, new mechanics and systems, and expanded Stonescript features are just some of the things that will become core to the final version of the game.

    Why are we staggering development like this? Well, were indiedevs!

    This is not meant as an excuse or a joke, but rather a sincere explanation. We are a small team that takes pride in the quality of our work, and Early Access allows us the opportunity to work in constant conversation with our players to iterate and improve on Stone Story.

    That kind of quality, however, calls for fairly rigorous testing and experimentation. Balance that with busy lives and a world thats on fire, and you can start to see why weve taken as long as we have.

    This is especially important when it comes to one of our primary concerns: Player Engagement & Fun.

    [h2]The Game Funnel (light game spoilers)[/h2]

    Stone Story RPG is a niche game. ASCII-animated incremental auto-RPG with programming elements is a hard enough sell as it is, and while it helps us stand out it also makes it extremely challenging to get players invested.

    We receive lots of valuable feedback from you guys. What we don't receive is feedback from players who did not become engaged with the game.

    These are people who, for whatever reason, didn't have fun playing. They leave and don't come back, almost never giving the developers direct feedback. This might be the single largest challenge to solve as a game dev! No game can please everyone, but we know we can do better.

    To tackle this issue, we track a set of usage data that is both aggregate and anonymous. For instance, when players begin a new story, they all go through the first location, gather several items, then craft their first item.

    Those steps are added to a collective pool of data. Correcting for things like piracy, this tells us a statistical story of how players, as a whole, are interacting with the game and allows us to see where folks are getting stuck.

    This process is called Funnel Analysis, where science intersects with art, to inform some of our game design decisions. This tells us where problems exist, but not what those problems are, or how to fix them. What comes next involves some detective work.



    We've identified and fixed several minor drop-off points, where players give up, but there is one STARK drop-off that persists. It appears right after upgrading your workstation, and we believe this is the Waterfall Puzzle, where currently 18% of new players are leaving (probably in frustration).

    The Waterfall Puzzle is a unique moment in Stone Story, since its one of the few times where we introduce a non-combat challenge. We've attempted various changes to solve the issue, with partial success. If we're going to crack this case it's going to take more than just a few text and number adjustments. We have to re-think the whole section.

    [h2]Fun and Enjoyment, Through the Lens of Data[/h2]

    It's certainly hard to quantify "fun", but we believe Retention Rate gives us a measure of that, albeit indirectly. Retention in games is often expressed in the sequence D1 > D7 > D30, or what percentage of players are returning to play again after 1 day, 7 days, and 30 days.


    • D1 retention is all about ensuring the game has a fun and engaging hook. Stone Story RPGs base game content can be completed in roughly 8 hours, meaning that someone can beat the game in about a day or so. The progression needs to be as smooth as possible, so fixing bugs and conveying the gameplay without confusion is crucial.

    • D7 retention focuses on giving people a reason to come back. This is where things like Quests and higher difficulties come into play. The goal at this part of the experience is to expose players to the deeper parts of the game, where their breadth of choices unfolds to infinity. Our work with the Quest Stone and the 3.0 release is designed to boost this area of the experience.

    • D30 retention focuses on the long-term. This is where we strive to get all our players: using Stonescript, creating custom content, theorycrafting, and generally being invested in Stone Story RPG as a whole. Community events are one way for us all to have fun at this stage of progression.


    In terms of future development, we believe Green difficulty locations, quality of life systems, an expanding arsenal of complex items, as well as a new game mode are some of the ways in which Stone Story can deliver long-term enjoyment.

    We love data, as it helps us understand the full picture and keep improving!



    [h2]Stone Story Worldwide[/h2]

    On TOP of retaining players, we spend just as much time ensuring that people all over the world can play the game. Were lucky to work with such a great localization team, Warlocs, whove made the game accessible in so many different countries.

    If youre a game dev and not localizing your game youre missing out on a HUGE audience. However, its not as simple as just translating! Good localization involves a deep understanding of dialogue, tone, and mechanics so you can properly convey it all to a completely different audience.

    Having Stone Story localized for so many languages doesnt just increase how many players we have; it also increases the amount of data we receive!

    Iteration and localization are all in service of the eventual ports and ensuring this can hit as wide an audience as possible. This process takes time and we ask that you please continue to be patient with us as we work to bring Stone Story RPG up to the ambitious vision we have for it.

    The Quest Update continues with the addition of Mr. Pallas Wild Ride! Players that have unlocked the Quest Stone will be able to access this new Legend and once more confront the Fallen God himself, the flayed titan Pallas.

    In addition to the new Quest, Stone Story RPG will also be running its fourth Challenge Event - The Wild Ride, from October 1st until October 10th. All players who participate in this event will receive the Skeleton Arm, a powerful Lost Item that further deepens your arsenal.

    Lost Items are rare pieces of loot that can be obtained outside of limited-time events. For information on Lost Items and their drop rates, please see here.

    • Each player is given their own Skeleton Arm at the beginning of the Challenge.
    • At the end of the event, participants will receive special loot for completing Mr. Pallas Wild Ride: a shiny treasure with an enchantment (uniquely signed from the event).
    • To proceed with the Challenge, players must complete a series of goals. Each goal completed further improves the loots enchantment bonus (up to a +11 enchantment).
    • There are a total of 4 goals, each one requiring you to use the Skeleton Arm in creative ways.
    • (Note: Events may repeat, and all gameplay-related rewards can still be obtained through normal play. Enchantments can also be removed from the event loot and placed on another item.)

    The Quest Update - Available Now

    Launching with four all-new adventures, the Quest Update will take players on journeys spanning the breadth of the Dark World. Uncover mysteries both magnificent and mundane as you meet old friends, wield powerful new artifacts, and get up to plenty of mischief. (Keep an eye out for a new achievement as well!)

    Content that launches today is only the beginning. Updates will continue over the next few months as we add content and events to the game; you can look forward to something new nearly every week!

    So what exactly are Quests? Good Quest-ion! (hohoho)

    Quests are self-contained adventures that can be played alongside the main story content. Accessed in-game via the Quest Stone, they can be split up into two types: Basic Quests and Legends.

    Basic Quests present players with a goal (e.g. Kill 45 Mosquitos) that, upon completion, will reward you with a small loot haul.

    Legends, however, are much larger in scale. Legends are full narrative adventures that put players in contact with curious characters, both new and old. The Dark World is fraught with peril, and sometimes you need a reliable Stonehead to get the job done. In exchange, youll be rewarded with powerful prizes (not all of them items!).



    Our primary focus when creating the Quest system was twofold: to further flesh out the Dark World and give players more choice with how to progress.

    While Stone Story allows for grinding, we found that people would simply farm locations to bruteforce their way through a difficult encounter. Now with Quests, players can pursue different options for progression. Earn powerful loot while embarking on adventures throughout the realm.



    The Quest Update launches with a batch of Basic Quests and 4 Legends:


    • Croaked: From the Deadwood Canyon, a symphony of croaks dance across the water, led by a conductor of annoyed moans. Investigate the disturbance!
    • Stone-Head: A Roof Overhead: There's a knocking at your shelter door, followed by the quick patter of footfalls. Someone may be in need of your help.
    • Bad Business: A panic-scrawled note from Lootmeister Hans beckons you back to the Mushroom Shop. What could have Hans in such a hurry?
    • Throwing Stones: A lone Pusher has been spotted by the Deadwood River, a remnant of those who did not make the climb. Perhaps its worth talking to them.



    There are a total of 16 Legends, the rest of which will be released over the following months along with in-game events and challenges. Make sure to be on the lookout for new additions to Stone Story!

    The Quest Update is something weve been working on for a long while now, and were still not done! As it was for all of you, the past couple years have been challenging to both work and live in. The reality of the situation is that Stone Story RPG is and always has been a passion project.

    Without you, our community, we would not be where we are today, nor would we still be working on this game after all this time. We believe in Stone Story and were so glad to see that many of you do too.

    Stone Story RPG launched into Early Access over 2 years ago and its been an incredible journey every step of the way. For indie game developers, that journey is an uphill climb with obstacles and obstructions (ones that we oftentimes dont see until they happen!).

    Before we dig into StoneJam, weve got some exciting news to share!

    Its been a long, long road and were happy to announce that after months of delays, technical issues, and juggling real life responsibilities, the Quest Update will be releasing on Thursday, September 23rd.

    While the update will be going live on the 23rd, Stone Story 3.0 is more than a single content patch. Weve got several months of content planned, so keep an eye out on our feeds for the official announcement in the coming days.

    Stonescript is a scripting language built into Stone Story RPG, used for modifying the character's AI. Easy to use yet powerful, scripts can be as simple as automating potions if your health gets low, optimizing combat to superhuman levels, or even creating new cosmetics and UI features!

    Instructions in the Mind Stone* are written in Stonescript, a minimalist language designed for use by everyone. If you can type, you can Stonescript--no programming degree required!

    In the time since StoneJam 3, weve added a huge variety of new features to Stonescript. Were eager to see how you make use of them!**

    Development Update

    Since our last post, weve made quite a lot of headway in development. Not only have we implemented quests, weve also added several quality of life improvements and further fleshed out Stonescript, Stone Storys in-game scripting language. The creative possibilities have continued to expand and become more robust; we cant wait to see how you play!

    We are currently in the polishing and bug-fixing phase for both technical and content features.     Spring Loot Event 2021 & Checking In with the Devteam

    Special Spring Event: 2x Loot

    Spring has sprung upon the Dark World!

    From now until March 15th, Stone Story RPG will be running a 2x Loot Event. Complete runs in the Mushroom Forest to earn this extra loot (which also includes 2x Lost Item drops).





    State of the Game

    As we near the end of work on the Quest System, we thought this would be a good opportunity to check in with all of you about the state of SSRPG's development. The Spring Event is a perfect example of what we hope to continue with future additions to the game.

    Automated and procedural events with shorter durations are key to the longevity of Stone Story RPG. They take advantage of the incremental nature of gameplay to vary up challenges and reward players accordingly, all with minimal input from our end once they're setup. After the Quest Update pushes out, we aim to line up several planned events that work in concert with automated ones to fill in the gaps.

    Eventually, these events will work in tandem with a vastly expanded Stonescript to give greater dimensionality to the game, even as we begin to "sunset" development on SSRPG.

    [h2]So what about the Quest Update?[/h2]

    Work continues on the Quest System and we're very nearly done with polish and refinement.

    We have 15 fully fleshed out quests for you to embark on after the Quest Update goes live. You'll span the breadth of the Dark World as you try to infiltrate Acropolis, forge powerful alliances, and even assist underpaid and overworked skeletons with unionizing.



    In addition to content creation and polish, under-the-hood development has taken a considerable amount of time. Henry, our narrative designer, has cooked up fun adventures we can't wait to share with you, while our systems designers Gene and Michael have been hard at work balancing the gameplay and further fleshing out the scripting functionality to support a wider array of features and mechanics.

    The ultimate objective of this in-depth work is to support user-generated content (e.g. mods and custom quests). For example, players can now flip sprites horizontally in Stonescript, which gives you greater control over how a scene will visually play out.

    There is plenty more functionality to dig into that we know you'll all put to good use.

    State of the Quest System

    Work on the Quest System has progressed at a steady pace and we continue to get ever closer to release. We've got 15 unique adventures that we're excited to share!



    The Quest System update will be far more than just the quests themselves. It was important that we developed the Quest System entirely within the framework of Stonescript, as we wanted to give our players the same tools to create adventures of their own.

    With Stonescript, players will have access to a minimalistic toolkit that streamlines the process and ensures ease of use for creating and sharing user-generated content. Development work has been and will continue to be centered around gradually adding features that work for the Quest System and open up future options for modding, including a sprite loader system, color picker, midi creator, and more. When we launch the Quest System, the included quests will be more than added content: they will serve as working examples of what YOU can create.

    We developed quests with the decision to take a more holistic approach. The sprite loader system is a great example, as we've recently added that functionality into Stonescript for development purposes. For example, the scene below is indistinguishable from regular game content, even though it's all done in Stonescript with the new animation system.



    Of course, we wouldn't have had this flexibility without the help of all our Early Access players. Your continued support and feedback is invaluable towards making Stone Story RPG be the best version of itself.

    Stonescript is a scripting language built into Stone Story RPG, used for modifying the character's AI. Easy to use yet powerful, scripts can be as simple as automating potions if your health gets low or optimizing combat to super-human levels.

    Stonescript can also be used to manipulate a number of in-game elements, like the UI or player cosmetics. Put your avatar in a flying mecha, give them a fancy hat, or create a dynamic healthbar!

    Submission rules:

    1. Inside your scripts, at the beginning of each file include:
    - Name/nickname of author or multiple names if multiple authors
    - Version number of the script

    3. If a single entry involves multiple interdependent scripts, put them into a zip.

    4. Submit different entries separately.

    Your arrival and evident thirst for loot presents a unique opportunity. A gift is forged! Will you take the Blade and embrace its power?



    [h2]Challenge Event III[/h2]
    From October 10th until October 18th, Stone Story RPG will be running a 20% discount as well as our third Challenge Event - The Titans Trial. All players who participate in this event will receive The Blade of the Fallen God, a powerful Lost Item that further deepens your arsenals synergy.

    [h3]To partake in the event:[/h3]

  • Begin the trial by visiting Pallas to wield the sword.

  • Activate the Blade's power to defeat foes. Earn a Smite buff for each foe defeated this way.

  • Change to weapons that apply debuffs. While you have Smite buffs, each time you apply a debuff extra damage is dealt and progress is made on the reward.

    Explore possible combinations with other items and bring utter devastation to your enemies. At the end of the event, depending on your progress, youll receive an accordingly upgraded Bashing Shield as a reward. (Edit: To clarify some confusion, if you are unable to participate in the event, don't worry! The Lost Items promoted through Challenge Event III will simply be added to existing loot tables after it finishes, so you can grab them in-game once the event is done.)

    In addition to the new Lost Item and Challenge Event, this update also brings:

    • Updated loot tables for all locations in order to provide rewards more aligned with time invested.
    • Heavy balance changes to Caves of Fear, Mushroom Forest, Temple and Rocky Plateau.
    • Changes to the stats for Swords and Crossbows as well as some abilities.
    • A massive boost to Fire Runes.
    • New player-created Stonescript mods.
    • Over a dozen new Stonescript commands.

    Like all of you, the ongoing pandemic has affected our daily lives and livelihood. Just like time blended together, so did our work, and it became harder to separate our regular responsibilities from Stone Story RPG.

    As a result, development cadence and routine were heavily disrupted. We still managed to get some work done on the game, but it took a bit of time to reevaluate our situation and change gears to get the project moving at a steady pace again.

    First, well start off with some tangible changes to the game. If youre interested in a deeper devlog, keep reading after!

    [h2]What's New and Upcoming[/h2]


    • All the locations in Stone Story RPG have been reworked and rebalanced. Basic enemy and boss stats were adjusted to provide a spread of duration with loot quality proportional to the amount of time each location takes to clear.

    • The choice of where to place enchantments on your weapons is now more fair.

    • Treasure drop rates have been changed to better accommodate the difficulty balances and the inclusion of Offline Farming.

    • A new Challenge Event approaches! The fearsome blade of the Fallen God, Pallas, the Skinless will make an appearance later this month. Master its terrible power and reign supreme over your foes with your martial prowess. Challenge Event III begins on October 10th.




    [h2]Location Balance[/h2]

    Now that business is out of the way, wed like to talk with all of you about how weve been working on the game over these last several weeks.

    Much of our efforts over the past couple months have involved revisiting every location to tweak and adjust their difficulties. Through the lens of data-driven design, location balances priority was to hit the right feel for optimization of the core gameplay loop and, ultimately, resource gathering.

    (If youd like to get an idea of how we balanced values, you can take a look at this enemy data template we used here.)

    As we worked on balancing Stone Story, we tackled the effect that the treasure limit has on the core gameplay loop. As far as over a year ago before Early Access, players would consistently report that treasure limits were too low. They wanted to leave the game farming for longer periods of time and collect loot proportional to that time without having to intervene every few hours or hack the memory to allow more treasures.

    When your game is built around optimization and grinding, it's a continuous effort to figure out what the solutions are that go beyond simply raising a given limit. Granted, hoarding is an inherent part of progression/loot-based game but we were interested in giving that hoarding more dimensionality.



    Offline Farming was a large part of the solution. When combined with this current balance rework on duration and loot tables, the solution for treasure limit takes its form. You can farm a larger location and collect higher quality 400 treasures, or farm a fast location for just a few hours and collect lower quality 400 treasures. The total quality gathered is proportional to the time invested.

    Instrumental to this process has been one of our community members, DarkLucifer69. Hes used his deep knowledge of the game as a longtime tester and collaborator to help achieve the right feel for weapon values, enemy stats, and the resulting clear times.

    The clear times are sure to be different per player, and so it's up to each person to figure out which location works best for them. Now there is more choice and that's always the goal.

    [h2]Reprioritizing Work on the Quest System[/h2]

    Aside from balance changes, we took some time to reevaluate the development pipeline with the current circumstances and have come away with a solution that we feel works best.

    Up to now, we were engineering-focused, placing priority on further fleshing out Stonescript in order to better support incoming needs for the Quest System. Gene, who we hired to develop Stonescript and its systems, has done a great job of implementing a multitude of systems and mechanics.

    However, by placing that as our priority we ended up bottlenecking development on the narrative side of the Quest System. Henry, our resident Narrative Designer, had already laid down the foundations for the story arcs and general content flow, but the way the production pipeline was set up, we were waiting on systems to get fully situated before we tried to actually put the quests into the game.



    The resulting state of limbo dragged things around until we realized that by putting the narrative content first, we could triage our systemic needs and work them in piece-by-piece as the story content came in quest-by-quest. Wed been gating development with Stonescript milestones when really it should have been more holistic, similar to our approach with the Challenge Events.

    Weve still got a long road ahead of us, but were confident in both our team and you, our players. Your feedback and support have been utterly crucial to the health and success of the project. Great games arent built in a vacuum, and were thankful that we get to share our work with all of you.

    Celebrating Six Years of Development

    July 29th marked the sixth year of Stone Story RPG being in development! It really is incredible how far this game has come, from its beginnings as the brainchild of standardcombo to an award-winning game in its first year of Early Access.

    Looking Back



    As a small team working on a passion project in our (limited) spare time, our goal has been to stay true to a specific vision. That often meant delaying features, spending more time on others, and figuring out how to navigate the quagmire that is indie development and self-publishing.

    Despite it all, weve never conceded on what we believe Stone Story is and should be. An auto-RPG built on idle mechanics with an ASCII artstyle is something that we recognize is incredibly niche.

    However! Our amazing players have proven to us that people want that niche to be filled. Early Access has gone on longer than we anticipated, but the support of our players since we launched into EA nearly a year ago has helped us refine Stone Story in extremely valuable ways.

    With our communitys help, weve expanded Stonescript, designed and implemented Lost Items (which got its name from our players!), fleshed out new mechanics, and polished game balance to ensure that Stone Story RPG is the best it can be.

    One such requested feature from our Discord community was Offline Farming, which weve now launched onto the live branch with todays update.

    Offline Farming

    Key to incremental/idle design is the ability to stockpile resources. Up until now, players have had to leave the game running in the background in order to farm. No longer! Offline farming allows you to loop through locations and farm loot even while the game is closed.

    This addition should help both new players and veterans alike, whether youre trying to overcome a difficult location or finding the best way to optimize your runs.



    Plans moving forward

    So where is Stone Storys development at right now?

    Weve decided to take a small break from events. Events were a nice way to test out various mechanics, but now we want to focus primarily on getting the Quest System up and running as soon as possible. They will most certainly make a return, however! The systems they helped establish are now simply part of the game, meaning we can approach further design options with them in mind.

    The upside of being in Early Access is that we have the freedom to pivot development should priorities change (which they have!). We took stock of where the game was at and determined a number of essential tasks, such as bug squashing and quality-of-life improvements.

    With those out of the way, our full attention is now on expanding story-based content for Stone Story RPG.

    A Look at the Quest System



    Much of our time lately has been spent on further developing the Quest System. The work thus far has been to establish the framework, as the Quest System was built entirely within Stonescript.

    Designing around Stone Story RPGs in-game scripting language ensures a high degree of modularity, which will be incredibly important for when we eventually work in user-generated content (UGC).

    Players will have access to three quests at any given time, which can be broken down into two categories: Basic and Epic. Basic quests typically involve some kind of tracked task, like Kill X Fire Foes or Craft X Basic Swords. After a quest is completed, a timer kicks in that will tick down until the next quest takes its place.



    However, once in a while you may have an Epic Quest pop in! Epic Quests are vignettes that take you on standalone adventures where youll meet new characters and uncover new mysteries in the Dark World. This is where the modular design philosophy really shines.

    For example, in one of the Epic Quests, Ascension, players will cross paths with an escaped Pusher trying to make their way up to Acropolis. Several modular systems were developed using Stonescript, including dialogue boxes, animation and location layouts, event triggers, and quest rewards to name a few.

    The modularity means that once UGC is live, players will be able to create custom quests with an easy-to-use established framework. Everything youll see in Epic Quests youll be able to create yourselves!

    Summer Loot Event and Soundtrack Bundle Sale



    Summer Solstice Loot Event

    The Summer Solstice has enveloped the Dark World! For the duration of the Steam Summer Sale (June 25 to July 9), the final boss will have its loot drops tripled.

    Upcoming Summer Sale and Loot Event

    Hey everyone,

    We hope you were able to get your shiny chest in the last event! We saw comments expressing concern over missing out on the event rewards, so wed like to clarify that these items will return to the game at some point.

    The events have been a great way for us to test features and prioritize what needs to be worked on next. Once all of the systems are in place, then we can focus on reintroducing past rewards and events.



    Offline Farming

    One such feature that we have planned is Offline Farming. As requested by many of our players, Offline Farming would allow you to gather treasure/loot without running Stone Story.

    As an incremental game, resource gathering is an important mechanic to progression and we want to ensure that players have plenty of options as they move forward.



    Summer Solstice Event

    The Steam Summer Sale approaches, and with it another special event for Stone Story RPG. For the two weeks that the sale takes place, the game will feature a special in-game loot event. Keep your eyes peeled and Stonescripts ready!

    Challenge Event II is Now Live

    An odd wind blows-- Stone Story RPGs second Challenge Event is here! Challenge II brings quite a few important updates to the game, expanding upon in-game rewards, gameplay modes, and difficulty options.

    Read below to see what this new set of challenges entails.

    Challenge II - Hamartia

    From now until Sunday, June 14th, you have a chance to earn a shiny treasure! As with the last challenge, Challenge II will operate on a milestone format. In order to upgrade your reward, you must defeat bosses and add those victories to the counter.

    For the Hamartia Challenge, the games bosses will gain new resistances (while some will gain new weaknesses). Use the Sight Stone to aid you, but dont get too comfortable: every day at noon (local time) these attributes change.





    While boss immunities are random each day, they are the same for all players. Collaborate with others (either on the Steam forums or the official Discord server) to efficiently tackle these goals and ensure that a valuable shiny treasure will be yours!

    For the duration of the event, rerolling enchantments will cost 90% less Ki. Use this opportunity to experiment with each new day of rotating boss resistances.

    Higher tiered rewards will raise the threshold on the milestone requirements. At the end of the event, each player will receive their own shiny treasure. These shiny treasures will give players a random shiny item they dont already own, in addition to other mysterious rewards...

    Coming Soon: Challenge II, Bashing Shield, and Cosmetics

    Hey everyone,

    May has been a very busy month for the team! Development of the Quest system has fully kicked into gear as weve begun laying down the foundation for the mechanics and story.

    Behind the design of the Quest systems is the idea of taking all existing features (locations, NPCs, the Stonescript language) and remixing them in new ways, creating new connections between them and expanding where needed.

    In a pragmatic sense, the quests are about exploring the existing space in the Dark World that perhaps was only seen briefly during the main story. This will also be an excellent way to test the capabilities of user-generated content for the eventual inclusion of player-developed Quests.

    In the meantime, weve got a few things lined up to tide you over, like Lost Items, cosmetics, and the second Challenge Event!

    Challenge II - Hamartia

    Menacing monsters plague the Dark World. Icy giants, mad skeletons, and venomous serpents reign supreme over their dominions. However, a strange wind blows, filling these beasts with untold strength and draining it from others. Your Bardiche wont be enough to help you for this Challenge. You must use your wits and cunning to take down these behemoths!

    Challenge II - Hamartia goes live on June 6th with more details to follow.




    Bashing Shield

    Last time we shared The Blade of the Fallen God, a massive two-hander once wielded by Pallas, the Skinless. The next Lost Item were previewing is the Bashing Shield.




    While not quite as flashy, the Bashing Shield nonetheless expands upon the design space for shields and Lost Items. Like other Lost Items, it will be a unique item that cannot be crafted. Challenge Events and Quests are just some of the ways we plan to integrate this into the broader scope of the games design.

    Cosmetics

    One of the most often requested features for Stone Story is greater variety in player customization. To address that, weve brainstormed a number of possible cosmetic items.

    First on the list is name tags! With these one-time consumables, you can give custom names to any piece of gear. Enemies will learn to fear your Big Stick of Whacking or The Bardichiest Bardiche.

    Weve got several other cosmetic ideas brewing, but were always open to suggestions.

    Challenge Event I is Now Live

    Sharpen your Bardiches-- Stone Story RPGs first Challenge Event is here! Read on to see what Challenge I entails, and just what it means for the citizens of Acropolis...

    Challenge I - Executioner
    From now until Sunday, May 17th, you have a chance to earn a uniquely enchaned shiny Bardiche. In order to obtain the item, simply boot up the game during the events duration. The shiny Bardiche will appear in your inventory after the event ends.

    However, you also have the opportunity to earn a more powerful reward! Similar to the event that took place in The Stunning Update, Challenge I will operate on a milestone format. In order to upgrade your reward, you must defeat bosses with the Bardiches activated ability.

    Deceptively simple at first glance, youll quickly find the Challenge become true to its name. Higher-tiered rewards will call for higher requirements. Collaborate with other players (either on the Steam forums or the official Discord server) to efficiently tackle these goals and ensure that a powerful shiny Bardiche will be yours.



    The Acropolis Herald Vol. IV - Executions by the Number
    An ominous black scroll appears before you. You unfurl it, revealing a long parchment covered in stark white print. It appears to be some sort of document from Acropolis. Upon further reading, you see that its some kind of editorial. Within, you find an in-depth account of various news, changes, and goings-on within the city in the sky.

    Challenge Events Coming to Stone Story on May 9th

    Hey everyone!

    We hope you enjoyed The Stunning Update and were able to get your suped-up shiny Compound Shield. The event made for a lot of fun discussion and strategizing amongst our community; so much so that wed like to make it a regular thing!

    We are pleased to announce the arrival of Challenges in Stone Story RPG, with the first official Challenge starting next Saturday, May 9th.

    What are Challenges exactly? Read below to find out!



    Lost Items
    In order to explain Challenges, we must first discuss Lost Items-- a planned feature for Stone Story. Think of them as unique, named gear similar to Legendary items in ARPGs or MMOs. They are unable to be crafted like the rest of the games armory. Instead, they are earned through other means, like Quests (also planned) or special events.



    The design intent with Lost Items is to further promote novel strategies. Theyre created with a Build Around Me mentality, best exemplified in how they generate buffs. Lost Item buffs last for a set period of time, during which players can take advantage of it by swapping out for different items, discovering powerful synergies in the process.

    Challenge Events

    How does this factor into Challenge Events? As we move forward with development, we want to work with our community to explore the game in new and interesting ways. Key to Stone Story RPGs design philosophy is the idea of maximizing gains as efficiently as possible.

    This is where Challenge Events come in. Every few weeks, we will be holding limited-time events where you can obtain powerful, unique pieces of gear. As we iron out the kinks in the systems implementation, we will be in a better place for when we eventually include Lost Items.

    The first Challenge will take place on May 9th, with more details to follow. In the meantime, make sure you sharpen your Bardiches!

    The Stunning Update: Now Available

    With a shining brilliance comes The Stunning Update!

    This update brings a host of balance and quality-of-life changes, in addition to a brand new item and some much needed buffs to old ones.

    The best defense is a good offense - take the reworked weapons out for a spin and wreak havoc!

    However, an even better defense is a good defense. Face enemies head-on with the Compound Shield, a new item that will stop foes in their tracks. Until 4/26, Stone Story RPG will be running a special event (and accompanying 20% discount) where you can obtain a cosmetically unique enchanted Compound Shield. Read below to find out more.

    And after much silence from the city above the clouds, a message from Acropolis has found its way down once more. Open it and read to see what news awaits!



    The Compound Shield (and Special Event)


    Your ASCII arsenal expands even further. The Compound Shield is the latest gear addition to the game and will stun attackers for a short period of time. This item continues to open the existing design space for shields, allowing us to dig deeper into both new and existing mechanics.

    To commemorate the occasion, Stone Story RPG will be running a special loot event where you can obtain an enchanted shiny Compound Shield. The event will take a milestone format, where you can progressively receive better enchantments by stunning more foes with the Quarterstaff. This limited-time event will take place until 4/26.



    Quarterstaffs New Ability


    The Quarterstaff has received a new activated ability! Use it to pull off a mini-dash attack that will stun enemies, giving you an opening in the frantic flow of combat. Find creative ways to include them in your combat scripts to unlock new combos.

    Balance Changes and Quality-of-Life Improvements
    Much of this update was focused on polishing existing systems and mechanics. Thanks to the tireless efforts of our community, weve been able to iron out several of the kinks in combat, progression, and crafting.

    [h2]Weapon Buffs[/h2]


    Several items have received buffs including: Staffs, Wands, and Hammers. These weapon categories received a mixture of damage and attack speed increases, which should in turn lead to a greater variety of gear usage amongst players.

    [h2]Fuse More with the Triskelion[/h2]


    A long-requested UX feature from our players, weve added a Fuse More function within the enchanting workflow. Users who farmed the endgame often found it tedious to navigate their inventory each and every time they wanted to fuse enchantments.

    Now, you need only have at least 13 enchantment stacks (including enchanted items), and the Triskelion will automatically factor those into your fusions. Less time clicking, more time looting!

    Community Scripts
    In the time since we held Stonejam 2, weve had an incredible variety of scripts by our amazing community members. We chose some of our favorites to be included in-game. Load them up in your Mind Stone using a simple import command!

    Preview of Things to Come

    Hey Stone Story Fans!

    We hope you've all been safe and healthy these past few weeks. Things have been busy on our end as we work with our awesome beta testers towards pushing updates out onto the live branch. Keep reading to see what we've got coming up.

    Balance Update and New Item



    This weekend Stone Story RPG will be getting an update that addresses a wide variety of balance issues and much needed QoL improvements. These include things like a reworking of wand stats, streamlining the enchantment process, and even more additions to Stonescript.

    The update also brings the Compound Shield into the game, which further explores new edges of the existing design space for shields. We think it will be a stunning addition to your arsenal. :y

    To celebrate, Stone Story RPG will be running a limited-time event where you can obtain a powerfully enchanted Compound Shield. The update, event, and accompanying sale will go live this Saturday, April 18th.

    The Quest Stone


    Our next big content update will be 3.0, which adds the Quest system to the game. Up until now, the Quest Stone has been a placeholder for a long-planned feature that willl greatly expand the amount of narrative content in the game.

    The way it works is that quests will function as their own self-contained storylines. Each quest is split into 4-5 parts and will take players on journeys across the Dark World as they revisit familiar locations, talk to old acquaintances, and dive into dangerous new mysteries.

    To help us crank out content for the Quest system, we've brought on additional writing talent! We're extremely thrilled to be working with them and can't wait to cook up exciting adventures for new and returning players alike.

    Not only will the Quest system add more to the base game, it also opens up further possibilities for community-made content. The modular framework will be designed with the intent to support custom quests, allowing players to create their own adventures or share them with others. That feature is a ways off, but adding the Quest system to the game is a big first step.

    StoneJam 2: The Return of the Script

    Stone Story RPGs jam event makes its return this weekend. Update 2.8 has added a vast array of new features to Stonescript, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in Stone Story. Take part in StoneJam 2 and show off your creations!

    [h2]What is Stonescript?[/h2]
    Stonescript is a scripting language built into Stone Story RPG, used for modifying the character's AI. Easy to use yet powerful, scripts can be as simple as automating potions if your health gets low or optimizing combat to super-human levels. Stonescript can also be used to manipulate a number of in-game elements, like the UI or player cosmetics. Put your avatar in a flying mecha, give them a fancy hat, or create a dynamic healthbar!

    [h2]What is StoneJam about?[/h2]
    The Stonescript Update has greatly expanded what is possible in Stone Story RPG. We want to see what YOU can create! Some of the projects that people have made with Stonescript include:

    • Blackjack
    • Fishing
    • Combat scripts
    • Animated pets
    • Custom UI elements


    [h2]What do I get?[/h2]
    For StoneJam 2, we have a number of prizes!

    This time were introducing categories. These categories are meant to help guide you in creating scripts by providing a general theme or idea. They are:
    • Epic
    • Awesome
    • Beautiful
    • Useful

    Anyone participating has a chance to win each category. Have an Awesome and Beautiful new pet design? Maybe a Useful component that others can build with? From efficient farming scripts to full screen mini-games, all ideas are welcome!

    Any number of participants can win each category and a chance for the following prizes:
    • Epic = +15 Enchantment
    • Awesome = +11 Enchantment
    • Beautiful = +10 Enchantment
    • Useful = +10 Enchantment

    Our favorite submissions will also be invited to be an official addition to the game, allowing players to activate your script with a simple import command.

    [h2]When is StoneJam?[/h2]
    StoneJam will take place from Friday, February 28th (10:00 AM PST) to Monday, March 2nd (11:59 PM PST). You have 86 hours to create and submit your scripts.

    [h2]How do I participate?[/h2]
    StoneJam 2 will be hosted on our Discord server! To gain the new @stonejam role, go to the #commands channel and type !stonejam. Two new channels have been created for this event. Use #stonejam-discussion for all discussion about the jam and reserve #stonejam-submit for submitting entries.

    [h2]How do I submit my StoneJam entry?[/h2]

    Submission rules:

    1. Inside your scripts, at the beginning of each file include:
    - Name/nickname of author (or multiple names if multiple authors)
    - Version number of the script
    - Instructions on how to use it

    2. Drop your script into #stonejam-submit, along with screenshots and/or gifs of your entry in action.

    3. If a single entry involves multiple interdependent scripts, put them into a zip.

    4. Submit different entries separately.

    5. You can submit scripts created prior to the jam, as long as the jam weekend is used for meaningfully improving them.

    The Stonescript Update: Now Available

    Version 2.8 of Stone Story RPG adds a wide variety of features to Stonescript, the in-game scripting language. Bring your automation to the next level with powerful new functions. Got a taste for scripting? Get ready for the return of Stonejam and share your creations with the world.

    After many requests from our community, we have also raised the treasure limit from 150 to 100 + 5 * the player's level. Get your farming on and rack up that loot!

    The bulk of this update was focused on totally revamping Stonescript, bringing changes like:

    Tired of the same old UI? Spruce it up a little with Stonescript. New ways to manipulate what can be drawn on screen give you a wider set of options to customize your display as you see fit.

    These draw functions arent just about changing the UI. You can even add cosmetics and pets to the game! Look dapper with a fancy hat or stroll through the Caves of Fear with your trustworthy frog companion.

    [h3]Advanced Combat Scripts[/h3]


    Push your automation even further beyond with powerful functions. Fine tune your characters combat abilities down to the second, leaving no room for human error. Ensure your triumphant victory through endgame and beyond.

    You got your mini-games in my game! This update comes with 3 mini-games (still in development) built entirely with Stonescript. Pick apart the code to see how you can bring your own mini-game to life.

    You can now import external scripts into your game. Not only does this allow for easier sharing, it also gives players a way to better organize their scripts. Mixing and matching combat and UI scripts has never been easier.

    Celebrating Six Months of Early Access

    Today officially marks the six month of Stone Story RPG in Early Access! Thank you all so much for following the games development journey.

    [h2]Whats happened in Early Access so far?[/h2]
    Weve made significant strides towards bringing Stone Story to its final vision, and have even picked up a few awards along the way! Over the past six months weve:


    • Pushed out a major content update
    • Expanded upon Stonescript
    • Won awards at Tokyo Game Show and TIGA
    • Been nominated for awards at IGF and SXSW
    • Held the very first Stonejam
    • Squashed over 60 bugs




    Development continues to push on full steam ahead. Our current plans are to finish off the remainder of the Stonescript updates. Afterwards, focus will shift onto the Quest system, which will push Stone Story into 3.0 and bring a whole new layer of modular content to the game.

    Of course, Stone Story RPG would not be where it is right now without all of your support. A huge thank you to every single one of our players and fans!     The Yellow Update: Now Available

    [h3]Welcome to The Yellow Update![/h3]
    The Yellow Update is the first of several planned content updates to Stone Story RPG and brings a host of features and balance changes. Seasoned adventurers will face an all new tier of difficulty, encounter brand new minibosses, and wield a powerful new weapon.

    It also appears that a missive from Acropolis has found its way down to us. Be sure to read through it to see just whats happening in the city above the clouds and what it means for the dark world below!

    [h2]Yellow Difficulties[/h2]


    Face down harder challenges in the Yellow difficulty; each of the eight locations now have an additional five levels of difficulty past Cyan. Steel your nerves, ready your weapons, and fire up your Stonescripts!

    [h2]Minibosses[/h2]


    Prepare to face a new type of enemy: Minibosses. Each location will feature a unique miniboss, like the menacing Acronian Scout or the fluffy Mr. Puff.

    [h2]The Bardiche[/h2]


    Hordes of enemies slowing you down? Not anymore. Wield the Bardiche and cut a wide path forward. The Bardiche is perfect for clearing out waves of opponents and also comes with a deadly activated ability.

    Until Thursday, December 19th, play Stone Story RPG to receive a +3 Bardiche by defeating any yellow location!

    Update 1.8.6

    Hey Stone Story fans,

    It's been quite a week! After all the craziness of TGS (and winning four awards!), we're finally settled and ready to dive back into development.

    In the leadup to The Yellow Update, we're rolling out patch 1.8.6. This update adds a hefty number of improvements, balance changes, and bugfixes to Stone Story. Of particular note are additional Stonescript commands, which our players have been using in the beta branch to mod some really cool cosmetics into the game! Pilot a mecha or drive a tank with the power of Stonescript.



    Should you encounter any bugs or issues, please post them here on Steam discussions or in our Discord server (discord.gg/stonestoryrpg).

    Patch note highlights:


    • The Triskelion can now be equipped for +1 Movement Speed


    • Added the Mutate workstation, which allows you to change rune effects, among other operations


    • Added the Knee Chopper to Caves of Fear


    • Added several Stonescript commands, such as ?debuffs.count and ?face
    • Added a toggle for Screen Flash in Settings
    • The Hatchet now has an activated ability
    • Updated several tracks in the OST
    • ... and many more fixes and updates!

    The Yellow Update - Coming Soon

    Its big. Its yellow. Its coming for you.



    We're excited to announce that Stone Story RPG will be receiving its first major content pack: The Yellow Update!

    The focus of this update is to further expand on existing content, introduce quality of life and convenience features, and increase the scope of User-Generated Content. Version 2.0 of the game will bring with it a host of new changes!

    Here's what you can expect in the near future:


    • Yellow difficulty levels
    • Increased XP level cap
    • Minibosses
    • New Stonescript commands
    • More achievements
    • Updates to existing items
    • New crafting recipes
    • New enemies







    We're happy with where the game is at right now, but it's short of the ambitious vision that we know Stone Story can ultimately achieve. The Yellow Update is the first of many steps towards that!

    To that end, we have an upcoming patch (1.8.4) that will address several issues currently in-game, as well as add new improvements and features like the Triskelion as an equippable item and the Mutator Station!

    Development will kick up as soon as we get back from TGS, which has been nothing short of amazing. In addition to the two awards that Stone Story won at Sense of Wonder Night, it also received a nomination for Famitsu's Indie Prize and won a Square-Enix sponsored award!     We have some exciting news for all of you: Stone Story RPG has won "Best Art" and "Grand Audience Award" at Sense of Wonder Night 2019!





    SOWN is an event at TGS that highlights the most innovative indie submissions. Among dozens of indie games, only eight were selected to participate, so this recognition comes as a huge honor! We're extremely thankful for the wonderful reception it's gotten so far at TGS. If you're around at the expo, stop by our booth in the indie game area (9-A-47) and grab a button while they last!

    Stability Update v1.4.0

    Version 1.4.0 is now live! This update focuses on stability and core improvements to the experience, with a few balance changes for good measure.

    Here are the highlights:


    • Opening all treasures is now 48% faster!
    • Reworked how abilities are selected on the Anvil, so the player is able to control what they get during crafting.
    • Fixed problems that were causing some players to lose all their progress :(
    • 21 other bug fixes and improvements!

    Animation Livestream 6/23


    Tomorrow (6/23) at 2:30 PM PST, Stone Story's lead developer / animator, standardcombo, will be hosting an animation stream where he'll dig into the process behind creating ASCII animations.

    Stone Story RPG Dev QA

    Hello Tree Choppers!

    Last Sunday we hosted a Q&A session with members of our Discord server where we dove into the development process behind Stone Story RPG. We came away from the talk with several interesting design perspectives, ranging from how to teach players to incorporating idle game mechanics.

    SSRPG Development Update: We are officially content complete!

    Hello Stone Throwers!

    Its been a long road to get here, but Stone Story RPG is finally content complete! What does that mean? Well, everything that needs to be in the game is there.

    From here on out, our primary focus will be post-production tasks like bug-fixing, balancing, and audio polish. With localization and porting getting added on our to-do list, weve got a busy few months ahead of us. Were excited to show you all the goodies that have been brewing behind the scenes!

    The realm is covered in darkness. Monsters and mystery plague the land. Gather your supplies, forge your weapons and restore the light. Your journey begins with a single stone.

    Here are some milestones from development thus far:


    • 83 items
    • 40 enemies
    • 11 levels of difficulty per Location
    • 1,610 sprites
    • 655 animations
    • 9,952 animation frames
    • 2,227,798 ASCII glyphs

    We are working to pick an exact launch date and will have that info soon. Be sure to join our Discord server if you want to chat with the devs, follow day-to-day development with other players, and see awesome ASCII art!
