[Catalan] The entire game now officially supports Catalan! This work was made by the Ce Trencada Project, that translates video games into Catalan completely free of charge with the sole objective of promoting the culture of video games in Catalan.
[Item tooltips] You can now view the complete tooltip of an item without comparing it to other equipped items.
[Balance] World boss encounters have been revised: a much bigger portion of the damage to a segment is applied to the head. This effectively means that segments will stay alive for a longer period of time.
[Balance] The item set "Pocket Deathmachine" has been buffed and its buffs/debuffs are now 2x as potent.
[Balance] The Founders T4 skill "Tiny But Deadly" has been buffed. It now provides 8% buff per level (up from 4%).
[Balance] The Xinthu T3 skill "Crushing Hits" has been buffed. It now provides a 30% bonus in crit damage (up from 20%).

Random Uber Continuum Event recipe + much more!

[Continuum Transmuter recipe] A new recipe has been added: "Random Uber Continuum Event".
[Balance] The ship resistance mod now provides increased resistance to all elements (previously all but ballistic). This change will only affect ships that are modded post this patch.
[Balance] The drop-rate of Uber Contained Continuum Events has been increased.
[Balance] The weight of many kinds of player summons has been reduced. This should make the issue of summons pushing enemies around much less problematic.
[Performance] Minor performance improvements when using the item highlight filter by moving some calculations to a background thread.
[Misc] Worm sound effects for movement and attacking have been revised.
[Misc] You can now disable the file integrity checks made by clients when connecting to a COOP campaign game. To do so, set the value of 'Networking_RequireMatchingHashsum' to 'false' in the config.cfg file. This is safe from a server perspective: if files differ, it will at worst cause weird/unknown behaviour for the client. This addition was made as some older operating systems (e.g., some versions of Windows 7) produce inconsistent MD5 for game data/files. If any magician know why this is the case, please let me know!
[Bug fix] Fixed an issue that on very rare occasions could cause the item highlight filter to incorrectly include/exclude items. This could occur if the parameters of the item highlight filter were being changed simultaneous to an item being processed by the item filter.
[Bug fix] Fixed errors in the tooltips for the skills "Intense Repairs" and "Warp Plasma Converter".

Lock your items!

[Items] You can now lock items. A locked item cannot be sold or transmuted. Note that you can sell/transmute a ship with locked weapons placed in its turrets, if the ship itself is unlocked. You can also drop locked items into world-space and move them to/from the storage.

Prepare custom player saves for mods!

Create your own experiences using the game editor!

[h2]Merry christmas and a happy new year![/h2]
Today's patch (1.06) bring two new major features: a game editor and the Dungeon Master mode!

[h2]Editor[/h2]
The editor enables creating custom experiences and can be started through a button in the game, or alternatively, by running the executable "NienixEditor.exe" (Windows) or "NienixEditor" (Linux/MacOS) from the game directory.



Creating custom campaigns with your own rules and mechanics! You can, for example, add different triggers and outcomes (e.g., "destroy an enemy X opens a door Y"), write your own quests, specify your own rewards, and add map modifiers similar to those in Continuum Events. What other features that I add depend mostly on what you want to be able to do - please give me your suggestions!

The editor is integrated with the Steam workshop, which should make it easy for you to share the experiences that you create with others. There is a guide to the editor available here: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3110920722

Modded games uses a separate character sheet that ensures that progress is separated between mods and the campaign. You can clone any character in the campaign for the purpose of playing modded games.

[h2]Dungeon Master[/h2]
Apart from the game editor, I am also excited to announce that a new game mode called Dungeon Master (DM) has been added! In this game mode, the hosting player acts as a dungeon master, and can manipulate the world to create custom challenges.

Acting as a DM is probably an especially fun experience if you do it for a mod that you have created.



The DM has a few important things that should be mentioned:


  • The DM can summon most enemies that have been defeated during the campaign. A few kinds of enemies are currently not supported.
  • The DM inherits the base progress of the selected character.
  • The DM can teleport by double-clicking a location in the map.
  • The DM can not open loot containers or pick up items from world-space. The DM can, however, interact with the storage as well as drop items in world-space.
  • Chat messages sent by the DM are presented as quest dialogues for the participating players.
  • Progress made by client players in DM games is separated from the standard campaign.
  • Progress is only saved for regular players (i.e., not for the DM).

[UI] There have been various improvements to UI widgets. For example, the text search fields now support input of (almost) any length and a new color input field has been added. The latter enables a much wider degree of colors for the laser sights.

Fleet Commander Update!

It's now been half a year since Nienix reached 1.0!

To celebrate, today's patch (1.050) includes a completely new game mode called Fleet Commander. Apart from this game mode, a whole bunch of other content has been added during the past three months (the time since the last major news update). This post highlights significant changes. As always, follow the patch notes for the complete list.

[h2]Fleet Commander[/h2]
This game mode was inspired by Gratuitous Space Battles and allows you to orchestrate large-scale fleet battles. Play against an AI in the offline mode or a friend through the online modes.

You can only summon foes that you have defeated during the campaign. I hope this feature makes exploring random events more rewarding, as these include enemies that you would not face by solely following the main quest line.






[h2]Updates to the Continuum Transmuter[/h2]
I know that many of you have a love/hate relationship with the Continuum Transmuter. It is useful to roll and alter gear, but the process takes a long time - especially during the end-game. Thats why the Continuum Transmuter has been revised. In particular, it now includes the storage. The auto-match-recipes takes the items in the storage into consideration.

Recipe auto-matching also better considers item grades when evaluating what to upgrade. Mythic- and Uber-grade items are no longer automatically selected. The latter was done to ensure that no important end-game items could be transmuted through the auto-matching feature by mistake.


[h2]Items can now unlock different skills[/h2]
Legendary+ tier engines and ships can now roll with unlockable skills (up to tier 5)! Some skills only roll for certain kinds of ships/engines.


[h2]The core game engine has been updated[/h2]
The core game code has been updated to .NET 6.0. This brings many improvements. In particular, newer Linux platforms such as Ubuntu 22 are now supported "out of the box" (there is no longer a need to add older libraries required by the previous game version on such platforms).

[h2]Updates for controller players[/h2]
A new (gamepad-only) radial menu has been added that enables more easily enabling/disabling game screens that previously required two hotkeys pressed in combination (e.g., the inventory or map). The previous keybindings remain as-was; the radial menu is only enabled if the start-button is clicked (rather than pressed). Radial menus now also behave more closely to the variant used in Diablo 3.


[h2]New items[/h2]
[New ship] A new Dreadnought-class ship has been added to the loot table. The default variant of this ship is narrow and 1100m long.
[Continuum Entity] Ext-S Fragment: Extracts all skill bonuses from an item and stores them in a Continuum Entity. The item is destroyed in the process.
[Continuum Entity] In-S Fragment: Inserts the skill bonuses in the In-S Fragment to a desired ship or engine. Any existing skill bonuses in that item are replaced.


[h2]Catalan[/h2]
The entire game now officially supports Catalan (albeit some polish still remain - the final version is expected to be completed within a few weeks)! This work was made by the Ce Trencada Project, that translates video games into Catalan completely free of charge, altruistically, and with a purely cultural purpose, with the sole objective of promoting the culture of video games in Catalan.

[h2]Japanese, German, Portugese, French, Spanish and Swedish[/h2]
Based on player requests, I've decided to include the machine-made translations for Japanese, German, Portugese, Spanish, French and Swedish in the main branch. These localizations are bound to contain many errors. Please report incorrect texts on Steam or Discord! Or download the localization spreadsheet and correct it yourself. Translation instructions can be found here.

I've decided not to tag the Steam store page with these machine-made translations - only localizations made manually (or at least thoroughly proof-read) are visible on Steam. Additionally, the machine-made translations are highlighted with a red color in the language selection drop-down menu and have a warning text popup.




[h2]Quality of life[/h2]
[Misc] Engine auto-boost and active auxiliary auto-use are now coupled to the two ship hull configs.
[Misc] Fixed-point weapon auto-fire is now coupled to the two weapon configs.
[Keybindings] You can now bind all toggles in the radial menu (toggle the active skill, auto-fire weapons, auto-use auxiliary items and auto-boost engine) to keyboard/mouse keys. These options are available under Options -> Auto-use controls.
[Balance] There has been a plethora of balance changes. In particular, many skills have been buffed and various enemies have been rebalanced. Summoned drones also have lower penalties to resistances during end-game Continuum Events.
[UI] There is now information regarding the connection status to the master server in the public server listing.
[UI] The local player map icon is now presented in the transparent map.

I am currently working on some really cool stuff that have been suggested by many of you. Please keep giving me your awesome suggestions! I promise, I read them all (even if it sometimes takes me a long time to answer). It really makes the dev process a whole lot more fun.

Three month update!

It's now been three months since Nienix reached 1.0!

I am so happy to see so many people playing and enjoying the game! The months past the release (especially the first week) have been intense, but reading your feedback and watching you play really makes it all worth the effort.



[h2]So, what is new since 1.0?[/h2]
There have been 54 patches deployed since 1.0, and significant new features are presented next. The full patch notes, that includes various other added features, bug fixes and balance changes, are available in the community pages as well as on Discord.

[h2]Continuum XXL and World Bosses[/h2]
A campaign mode above Continuum XL has been added. It is unlocked upon completing the game on Continuum XL. Among other things, Continuum XXL includes five unique world bosses. These are rare and extremely powerful end-game enemies that provide Uber-tier loot when defeated. Each boss has a custom loot table.



[h2]A second skill tree[/h2]
A second skill tree has been added! You can toggle the activate tree at any time outside of combat (or even during combat, if you have allocated points in the Axiom skill Quick-Swap!). The two skill trees are tied to the two ship hull configurations.



[h2]Encyclopedia[/h2]
The encylopedia contains information about all in-game items and item modifications. You can check which items that support what mods, which effects they provide on different items, as well as read their descriptions.



[h2]Loot filter[/h2]
A new loot filter has been added! Access it from the inventory (next to the encyclopedia). This new filter is separated for each character. In addition to specifying various filters for all kinds of items, it is also possible to override the default colors for different items and grades. Color overriding is done by manually editing the loot filter for the desired character. The lootfilters are XML-files located under /Data/Save. For instance, the loot filter for the third character (third row) is named "char2_lootfilter.xml".



[h2]Instanced loot[/h2]
It is now possible to designate loot as instanced. The following options are available:
Free for all: Each loot drop is free for anyone to pick up. (This setting is what was previously available).
Distance: Each loot drop is locked to a randomly selected player that is located in the sector. Player loot filters are considered for this evaluation.
Locked: Each loot drop is locked to a randomly selected player regardless of where the player is located. Player loot filters are considered for this evaluation.
The variant called "Distance" is the default value. This can be changed in the Loot section of the main menu options. Item locks are removed once the item has been picked up.

[h2]Continuum Transmuter[/h2]
The Continuum Transmuter UI has undergone revisions to make its components more distinguishable. For example, there is now a preview of the outcome of a transmute. Newly unlocked recipes are now also better highlighted in the UI.



[h2]New skills and item sets[/h2]
[New skill] Tiny but Deadly, a Founders T4 skill has been added: If using a Fighter-class non-Sentinel ship, all fixed-weapon bonuses to attack speed, critical hit chance, critical hit damage and elemental damage are increased by 4 (1 point)- 20% (5 points) of their current amount. At max level, this means that a base buff to attack speed of 200% becomes 240%.
[New skill] Pocket Pulverizer, a Vagrantis T1 skill has been added: If using a non-Sentinel ship that has a diameter less than {0} metres, fixed-weapon damage is increased by {1}%.
[Item set] A new item set called "Grandius Obliteratus" has been added. This set is especially useful for those who want their drones to wreak havok.
[Item set] A new item set called "Pocket Deathmachine" has been added. This set has been designed to make Fighter-class non-Sentinel ships stronger.



[h2]Russian localization[/h2]
All text in the game has been translated to Russian! This work was single-handedly done by @Alekseyzz2078. Many thanks for your help! You can find him on Discord if you have any questions.

[h2]Quality of life[/h2]
[UI] Properties of drone summons (all but proc-type summons) are now shown in much greater detail - especially in the modal/comprehensive tooltip variant.
[UI] A new bold font has been added - Noto S Bold. This font also supports Chinese and Russian.
[UI] When an item is compared to another, the icon of the equipped item is now highlighted in the tooltip.
[UI] An option to disable the white screen-flash has been added. This is located under the General section of the main menu options.

Performance improvements and changes to cave-type maps

[Misc] Most maps in Act 2, and all Continuum Event cave maps, have been revised. They are now composed of long windy thick connected tunnels.
[Performance] Non-essential item loot filter checks (such as those used for rendering) are now managed by a background thread. This should serve to increase performance/reduce lag.
[Performance] Performance has been improved for most of the maps in Act 2.
[Balance] Scout-type summons now move closer to their targets before they start shooting, making them behave more like dog fighters than snipers.
[Bug fix] There was previously a need to re-equip the ship after spending points into the Founders skill "Molten Metals" for it to have an effect on on-board turrets. This requirement has been removed.
[Bug fix] Conditions are now sorted according to type when evaluated. This should remove many of the weird character stat sheet updates that have been observed - some work on this topic likely remain.

A new loot filter!

[Loot filter] A new loot filter has been added! Access it from the inventory (next to the encyclopedia). This new filter is separated for each character and is much more comprehensive than the previous one. In addition to specifying various filters for all kinds of items, it is also possible to override the default colors for different items and grades. Color overriding is done by manually editing the loot filter for the desired character. The lootfilters are XML-files located under /Data/Save. For instance, the loot filter for the third character (third row) is named "char2_lootfilter.xml".
[Loot pickup options] The loot pickup methods (e.g., bulk pickup) have been moved to the loot filter. You need to re-enable it from this menu.
[UI] Updated item grade borders to better suit the new coloring options in the loot filter.
[UI] The option "Bullet effects" (see the Combat section of the main menu options) now apply to most bullet effects and not only explosions. Apart from making things more visible in hectic situations, it should also be useful from a performance standpoint.
[Balance] Crates/boxes destroyed by your summons can now provide loot.

Nienix: Cosmic Warfare 1.0!

Nienix has finally reached 1.0!

I had originally planned for 8-12 months of early access, but it ended up lasting ~14 months. This was the case as I got so many great ideas from you guys that the originally intended features were flexed quite a bit. I am very happy it did, and very grateful for all your help - Nienix 1.0 would have been way less fun without it!

Brief summary of the year in EA:


  • On average, a player spent 20 hours in-game - 1 out of 10 played more than 100 hours.
  • More than 5000 player feature requests were received (and most were implemented). An example fan-favorite is the worm-type ship.
  • More than a hundred patches were deployed.


To put it mildly, a lot happened during EA!

On another note - I am far from done developing the game. You can expect alot of new content over the coming years!

End of Early Access: 24th of March 2023!

[h2]I am thrilled to announce that Nienix will exit Early Access in less than two months! [/h2]

The features that were originally planned for Early Access were extended quite a bit based on community feedback (and there is still time left... :-)). I'm very grateful to all of you for contributing - both Nienix and the dev process would have been way less fun without you!



Being out of Early Access does not mean that the development of the game will stop. It simply means that the features that I indented for Early Access have been accomplished. I plan to add new content for many more years to come. A few things that come to mind are:

New items, item mods, item sets and skills.
New end-game challenges.
Changes to current content based on player feedback.
Making modding easier by giving everyone access to the world editors.

[h3] 17th of February 2023: 15 USD -> 20 USD[/h3]
As is described on the store page, the price of the game will be increased when the game exits Early Access. More specifically, the price will be increased from 15 USD to 20 USD. The new recommended Steam pricing tool will also be employed, which will further adjust the price for some currencies. The price increase will be made on the 17th of February 2023. The change is made a month prior to release as there is a 1 month sales cooldown on Steam after adjusting the price - there will be a sale starting on the release day.

Continuum Challenges are end-game challenges that when accomplished provide fixed player buffs such as bonus skill points. If you die during a challenge, you need to restart it (dissimilar to Continuum Events). Unlock them by completing a Continuum Event.

Many user interfaces have been revised. For example, a text search field has been added to the Continuum Transmuter and items are enlarged when highlighted in the inventory.
Most enemies now have random weapon cooldowns when they spawn. This change was made to create more dynamic engagements.
Performance has been significantly increased when there are lots of bullets active.
Systems related to multiplayer have been reworked. Playing multiplayer should now be a lot more stable and smooth.


[h3]Skills[/h3]
The Xinthu tier 7 skill Experimental Catalyst has been added. If a weapon provides damage over time, its direct damage and hull repair are converted to damage over time. Attack speed is reduced by 80%.
The Imperius skill "Halt!" has been revised. It now works as follows: Enemies hit by your fixed-point Frost weapons have {0}% chance to receive reduced resistance to all elements by {1}% for {2} seconds.

Continuum Challenges available for all!

Continuum Challenges are end-game challenges that when accomplished provide fixed player buffs such as bonus skill points. A new Xinthu skill!

[New skill] The Xinthu tier 7 skill Experimental Catalyst has been added. If a weapon provides damage over time, its direct damage and hull repair are converted to damage over time. Attack speed is reduced by 80%.
[Balance] The "Brute Edition" weapon mod can no longer be used on purely auxiliary weapons that have 0 DPS.
[UI] Current player conditions in the UI are now sorted according to type and effectiveness.
[Misc] The setting "Networking_Max_MTU" has been added (this setting is not possible to change from within the game). Per default, the max MTU for network packets is automatically identified by the game itself. However, some users seem to have had issues with this function. A too high MTU can cause various weird behavior when playing multiplayer, such as lag and infinite loading screens. If you experience such events when playing multiplayer, try setting Networking_Max_MTU to 1200. I.e., add 1200 to ../game_root/Data/config.cfg.
[Performance] Greatly increased performance when playing with builds that produce lots of bullets.

It is possible to manually enable globalization support by removing the row '"System.Globalization.Invariant": true,"' in the file "../game_root/Nienix.runtimeconfig.json".

Christmas update that includes Act 4!

Merry Christmas!

Today's patch brings a plethora of new features to the main branch:

[h2]Act 4[/h2]
Act 4 can now be explored by all players! This act includes 60 new enemies and four campaign bosses.
If you have unlocked Continuum Mode previous to this patch, Continuum Mode will be locked. Don't panic: all your progress, unlocked waypoints and such from playing Continuum Mode are still there. However, you need to finish Act 4 first to enter Continuum Mode. At that point, Continuum Mode will be unlocked and your previous progress during Continuum Mode made available.
To enter Act 4, complete the final mission in Act 3.



[h2]Level cap increased to 60[/h2]
You can now level up to 60!

[h2]Continuum XL[/h2]
Continuum XL brings various changes to the core game experience and is unlocked by completing Act 4 on Continuum Mode.

[h2]Grand and Uber Continuum Events[/h2]
Grand and Uber Continuum Events have now been added to the game. These events are end-game dungeons with special loot available in Continuum XL.



[h2]New items[/h2]
Item sets: 16 item sets have been added! These can drop for Mythic and higher item grades. Their drop rate is significantly increased during Continuum XL, especially towards the end, as well as in Continuum Events (based on their difficulty).
Uber-grade items: These items that only are dropped in Grand and Uber Continuum Events.
Stationary Indestructible Hull: An Active Auxiliary Item that generates an aura which provides temporary invulnerability to all allies within its range.

Flux Deflector (Founders Tier 3): Damage taken from a single hit can at most inflict X% of your max hull. Your hull regeneration is reduced by Y%.
Hardened Tail (Axiom Tier 2): Direct damage to Sentinel tail segments is reduced by X%-Y%, where damage reduction is higher for segments further away from the head.
Emergency Repairs (Founders Tier 2): The player is instantly brought back to life with X% hull upon suffering fatal damage, and is then invulnerable for Y seconds. Has a cooldown of Z minutes.



[h2]Quality-of-life updates[/h2]
Enable/disable bullet on-hit effects: You can now enable or disable bullet on-hit-effects for different sources.
The map UI has been revised to make navigation easier.
Many sprites have been polished.
You can now choose which map modes that are enabled. This setting is located under the General settings section (the option "Enabled map modes"). The default setting is "All"
Simplified Chinese is now supported! This localization was single-handedly done by (WH)! If you have a Chinese language set in your operating system, it should automatically change the language to simplified Chinese the first time the game is started post this patch.


Other news: while more content and changes are planned for early access, Nienix is on track for a Q1 2023 release.

Grand Continuum Events and Act 4 open beta!

    Before you enable the Act 4 test build, make sure to backup your save game folder (/Data/Save/). When you have passed level 40 with a character, the corresponding save wont be applicable to the regular build anymore.

    The Act 4 test branch contains the following updates:

    • You can explore Act 4. This act includes 60 new enemies and four campaign bosses.
    • You can level up to 60.
    • You can unlock (and complete) the Continuum XL mode, which contains various changes to the core game experience.
    • As a bonus, a completely new game mode called "Fleet Commander" is included. This mode lets you battle an AI or friend in an RTS-like auto-battler. I'm unsure if this game mode will make it into the final release. Please let me know what you think!

    Eight month recap!

    It's now been eight months since Early Access started!

    The major news is that Act 4 almost is completed! A closed alpha that includes both Act 4 and Continuum XL difficulty will begin in about a week and run for a month. If you wish to participate in the alpha, let me know on Discord!

    Apart from working on Act 4, tons of new features have been added during the three months since the last major news update. Most of these changes were made based on player feedback on Steam and Discord. Please let me know if there is anything that you would like to see changed! It has a good chance to make it into the game.

    [h2]Sentinel ships[/h2]
    A completely new ship type has been added! This variant moves like the worm summons, and is called "Sentinel". It comes with on-board turrets and can be modded in the same fashion as other ships.




    [h2]Loot recycler[/h2]
    A new "loot recycling" feature has been added. The loot filter in the main menu now reads/works as follows: The minimum item quality to display in world space. If using the Bulk or Collision loot pickup options, this is also the minimum quality that is picked up. Loot that is skipped due to the loot filter is recycled. Every 100 recycled items yields a new item. The quality of this item depend on the quality of the recycled items.


    [h2]Dedicated server[/h2]
    A dedicated server that can be run in headless (console) mode has been added. It is available for all platforms, including the demo. It is an executable called "NienixDedicatedServer" in the game root directory. Apart from the obvious use-case when playing PvP, the dedicated server also enables playing the PvE campaign in a "persistent world" that is not reset (unless you kill the server).

    Five new Xinthu Frigate-class ships have been added to the loot table. They are between 100 and 350 meters in diameter. Most of these are unlocked in the loot table from Act 2 onwards.

    Defiant Shields (Imperius): Increases drone resistance to all elements.

    [h2]Quality-of-life updates[/h2]
    It is now possible to enable highlighting (either red or white) to all enemies. This setting is available in the User interface section of the main menu options.

    If the "Highlight Items" key is pressed (default binding: left alt), objects that currently can be interacted with (e.g., doors or station platforms) are now given an outline in world space.

    You can now enable auto-cast for all relevant item slots (engine, active auxiliary items and weapons). See the check boxes in the inventory screen.

    Modding and demodding items no longer rerolls their stats.
    All larger ships have now been given a default % bonus to hull regeneration (as it pretty much was a per-requisite to use bigger ships). It works similar to the Axiom skill "Heavy Plating", but with Sentinel-type ships getting a bonus based on the length of the tail.
    When playing COOP, the last known position of a player in a dungeon or open world space is now shown in the map and HUD.
    Various dungeons have been enlarged to enable being traversed with larger ships.
    It is now possible to lock the crosshair in front of the ship when using mouse + keyboard. This setting is called "Mouse aim" and located in the control scheme section of the main menu
    You can now set friendly fire to "None" (henceforth the default value).
    You can now change the color of the laser sight. This option is located in the user interface section of the main menu options.
    You can now disarm the alternative ship slot entirely, enabling builds that have the same ship but different auxiliary items.
    The speed of all summons has been increased.

    Third month recap!

    It's now been three months since Early Access started! A summary of the most significant changes during the third month are presented below.

    Each individual on-board ship turret can now be customized! The turret employs its equipped weapon, including all passive and active bonuses.


    [h2]Global bonuses for summoned drones and on-board ship turrets[/h2]
    Summoned drones and on-board ship turrets can now be buffed by passive bonuses.

    Guided Destroyer: a Vagrantis weapon that shoots heavy homing rockets with large area of effect.

    Upon player death, the suffered damage types as well as the biggest damage dealer is presented in the UI.


    [h2]Various bug fixes, polish and balancing[/h2]
    Apart from new features, there's been loads of balancing and some polish made. For example:
    A shader/graphical effect has been added for when swapping between ships.
    Many menus and tooltips have been improved.
    Most bonus % damage skills (a total of 12 revised skills) now also increase ship turret damage.
    Font scaling has been improved to work well also on really small resolutions (e.g., the Steam Deck).

    Second month recap!

    It's now been two months since Early Access started!

    This second month has brought a plethora of new features, polish and balancing. As for the previous recaps, most of these features are based on community suggestions. Please provide suggestions on the Steam forum or Discord if there is something you would like to see in Nienix!

    [h2]Quick-swapping engine and auxiliary items[/h2]
    Quick-swapping ship now also swaps the engine and all auxiliary items. This should make it easier to play with two different builds (e.g., a fighter in one configuration and a cruiser in the other).


    [h2]New items[/h2]
    Targeting System: An auxiliary weapon that when fired makes all active summons target a given position. In addition, it creates a huge speed boost area of effect.
    Hangars: Eight Fighter Hangars and four Frigate Hangars have been added. These have a requirement regarding ship size, and cannot be used with smaller ships. If you play with a large ship in end-game, you can summon a fleet with hundreds of fighters.
    Experimental Sensor: Provides lower sensor range than the standard sensor, but in return provides random bonuses.
    Frigates: Three new Frigate-class ships have been added (LTM Frigate P1-P3). These have a diameter between 100 and 150 meters.
    Cloner T-2 Generator: Summons a Cloner T-2 drone that is larger and stronger that the Cloner T-1 variant.



    [h2]New Continuum Entities[/h2]
    Three new Continuum Entities have been added:
    Sp-4 Fragment: Provides a specific modification to a given engine.
    Mp-4 Fragment: Provides a random modification to a given engine.
    Dye Fragment: Allows repainting a ship in a given color. Custom colors can be made by mixing dyes.

    [h2]Engine mods[/h2]
    Seven engine modifiers have been added. The mod extraction recipe works for these mods as well.
    Glass Cannon: Increased attack speed at the cost of reduced resist all.
    Heavy Shots: Increased damage at the cost of reduced attack speed.
    Sturdy Hull: Increased hull at the cost of reduced damage.
    Crit Mastery: Increased chance and damage of critical hits at the cost of reduced resistances.
    Recovery Mode: Increased hull regeneration at the cost of reduced resistances.
    Slow and Deadly: Increased damage at the cost of reduced boost velocity.
    Tough Cookie: Increased resistances at the cost of reduced attack speed.

    [h2]New features for the Storage[/h2]
    Filters that make it possible to bulk-move different items to different storage tabs have been added.
    The available space in the storage has been significantly increased (by a factor of 6x).
    It is now possible to bulk-move items between the storage and the inventory.



    [h2]Misc other new features[/h2]
    The number of recipes that remain to be discovered is now presented in the UI.
    All main quest dungeons have been enlarged to make the experience when playing with larger ships more enjoyable. Several new dungeons and caves have also been added.
    It is now possible to set how hull bars, cooldown bars and item names should scale along with camera zoom. These options are presented in the general options section in the main menu. The default setting is 40%.
    Passive drones (e.g., Cloner T-1 drones) can now drop in variants that make them fixed at the side, front or back of the ship.
    The Xinthu skill "Turbo Drones" [2:3] has been added. This skill increases the speed of all drones with up to 300%.

    It's now been one month since Early Access started!

    This month has brought a ton of new features. As for the previous recap, most of these features are based on community suggestions. Please join discord if there is something you would like to see in Nienix - theres a good chance that it will happen.

    The first week added, among other things, a loot filter, a skill toggle, and two new loot pickup methods. This is covered by the previous post. The remainder of this post describes features introduced during week 2-4.

    [h2]Hardcore mode[/h2]
    A Hardcore mode has been added. If a character playing on Hardcore dies in the campaign, it is moved to the Softcore campaign. Characters that play on Hardcore have their own shared Storage. Coop play is possible between Hardcore and Softcore. Playing on Hardcore enables unlocking a bunch of new achievements.


    [h2]Giant stations[/h2]
    The game engine has been reworked to handle gigantic stations that can be easily traversed even with the largest Dreadnaughts. So far, a few new such stations have been added and some existing stations have been enlarged. Many more are in development!


    [h2]Major revisions to the map[/h2]
    The map can now display sectors even when their content has been unloaded from memory! This works by caching sector map graphics, and in short means that discovered events can be viewed regardless of their distance from the player.


    [h2]Quick-swapping ship[/h2]
    It is now possible to quick-swap the ship using a key. This is especially powerful in combination with the Axiom skill "Quick-Swap", that enables switching ship even when enemies are near.

    Convenient Looting Update!

    This patch makes looting a lot more convenient!


    • [Loot] It is now possible to set loot filters in the character information screen!

    Early Access has begun!

    Today is the day!

    I am extremely proud and excited to share Nienix with all of you!

    I would like to thank everyone who participated in the closed beta. Your feedback has been priceless! This is the main reason why I chose Early Access - I want to make this game as good as can be!

    The current state of the game could very well have been a "final" product. The fastest completion time of the campaign among the ~100 beta testers is 12 hours. And completing the campaign is not the end! By doing so, the Continuum Mode is unlocked. Beta testers that continued to explore end-game content in Continuum typically spent hundreds of hours developing a single character!



    That said, Nienix is far from feature complete! The overall roadmap looks as given below.

    Will definitely happen:

  • A hardcore mode, where death is permanent.
  • More events and quests, such as new dungeons, caves and rescue missions.
  • A fourth act. When the fourth act is released, the level cap will be raised from 40 to 60.
  • A third campaign mode called "Continuum XL" that is unlocked after the game has been completed on Continuum mode. The difference between Continuum XL and Continuum is similar to the difference between Continuum and the regular campaign (higher difficulty and more content).
  • Polish of existing content, such as updated graphics and audio.

    Subject to change based on community feedback:

    • A dedicated server option that can be run in headless mode (the current dedicated server option requires a GUI).
    • A world editor that can be used to create custom campaigns.
    • Localization for languages other than English.
    • A new game mode called "Fleet Commander" which is a strategy game where the player can summon the different enemies that have been defeated in the campaign.
    • More PvP maps and polish to existing PvP game modes.
    • Pretty much anything that tickles your fancy!

    The arena mode enables creative experiments with defeated foes in a "god-simulator" style. It is available for both the demo and the closed beta and supports both single player and multi player.

    Heavy Gunships Update!

    The demo and beta tester build have been updated!

    This update contains a range of new features:


    • Frigates, cruisers and motherships have been added to the loot tables. These are heavier than light gunships. To compensate, they have more hull and are equipped with turrets.
    • There is now a "Flight Assist" option that if enabled causes the ship to slowly stop if the player is not attempting to move.
    • Various bugs have been patched. Example fixed bugs include corrections to AI pathfinding and AOE colliders, and a bug related to screen resolutions for multi-monitor setups.
    • Several significant performance increases have been made.
